Leap Day!
Today is "leap day", February 29, which occurs only in a "leap year", which comes every four years except for years which end in 00 that are not divisible by 400. Therefore this year has 366 days instead of the usual 365. For the sake of the calendar, the extra day of a "leap year" makes up for what correlates with the actual duration of the orbit of the Earth around the Sun.
What does an extra day in this "leap month" of the "leap year" mean to us? In the sense of the "leap year" it seems to makeup for time not counted by our regular 365 day calendar. Having an extra day is something some people long for in order to catch up with what they were unable to do on other days. "Give me one more day" is the request of a student who just couldn't quite finish an assignment. "Please, give me just one more day" is the desperate cry of a tenant owing the landlord the rent. It may also be the urgent request of an employee not wanting to lose their job, but still have the opportunity to show what they can do. These words may reflect a desire backed by many reasons in many situations. So, how will the DAY be used?
EVERY DAY is a gift from God. EACH NEW DAY is a sign God is allowing life in this world to go on at least for another day. Are we prepared to use THIS DAY and EVERY DAY in a manner sincerely reflecting our appreciation and thanks to the One Who has given it? Are we focusing on the right things?
Peter urged. . .
"(18) But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both NOW and to THE DAY OF ETERNITY. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18 ESV)
To not grow and be prepared in this way is the worst "behind" we could ever get in life. Of all the things we grow in and learn, let us be sure it is in the grace and knowledge of our Lord. Then we will be ready to live "now" (THIS DAY) to His glory and be prepared for when "THE DAY OF ETERNITY with Him comes. Let it be so!
Have a great NEW DAY IN THE LORD!

Open Doors!
It has been said that "Opportunity only knocks once." Well, that is not entirely true. There are opportunities which arise and present themselves more than once.
It has also been said that "When God closes a door He opens a window." That also is not entirely true. Sometimes God closes a door and that's it -- it's simply closed. (Consider the warning of Matthew 25:10-12)
There are doors which open, close, and then open again. We should bear in mind it is true we can't always count on an OPPORTUNITY to re-present itself. Sometimes a door closes for a reason. It is possible for an opportunity to be completely lost. Therefore we need to be mindful of taking advantage of OPPORTUNITIES as they come before us and use the doors God opens. Yet, we also need to realize there are times God sees the need to close a door. Maybe in those cases He wants us to change the focus of our direction or action.
Do we pray about doors? Do we pray about OPPORTUNITIES? We ought to if it has to do with our effectiveness in sharing God's message.
Paul, in his letter to the church at Colossae, requested those type of prayers.
"(3) Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (3) At the same time, pray also for us, THAT GOD MAY OPEN TO US A DOOR FOR THE WORD, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison -- (4) that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak." (Colossians 4:2-4 ESV)
Paul mentioned his imprisonment. He was a prisoner. What OPPORTUNITIES could he have? For one thing he was able to reach some even in Caesar's household. (Philippians 4:22) He also saw his imprisonment as actually helping serve to advance the gospel and encourage the boldness of others. (Philippians 1:12-14)
When God opens a door for this purpose, we also need to be ready to open our mouths. Note what Paul went on to say. . .
"(5) Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, MAKING THE BEST USE OF THE TIME. (6) Let your SPEECH ALWAYS BE GRACIOUS, SEASONED WITH SALT, so that you may KNOW HOW YOU OUGHT TO ANSWER each person." (Colossians 4:5-6 ESV)
Let us be praying about open doors. Let us also pray for each other. Then may we live prepared to open our mouths to share God's message of grace as those doors of OPPORTUNITY present themselves.
Have a great day USING THE DOORS GOD PROVIDES!

Think And Live!
Someone has said, "Life is good when we think it's good. Life is bad when we don't think." [Doug Horton]
It is true that attitude has a lot to do with our outlook on life and can even impact how things go. However, there are times when one gets into trouble and they respond, "But I didn't think." Perhaps that is the key to many problems in life; people have forgotten to think. When that is the case is it any wonder life sometimes goes bad? It is good to think before we act and before we speak. Doing such aids in keeping us from doing and saying the wrong things. However, we also need to be careful WHAT WE THINK about because those thoughts can break into action.
In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul exhorted. . .
"(8) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS. (8) What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me -- PRACTICE THESE THINGS, and the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:8-9 ESV)
If our thoughts do not fit into one of those categories, we would do well to dismiss them from our mind. Dwelling on that which is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and trustworthy will compel us to live in such a manner. Later in this same chapter Paul noted the futility of the thinking of the Gentiles and urged toward no longer walk in that manner. (vss.17-19) Instead the focus was to rest on the LIFE IN CHRIST which marked the new self that had replaced the old self and its former manner of life. (vss.20-24) That life is one marked by "true righteousness and holiness" (vs.24) which matches the likeness of God to be made evident in the manner in which we live. May our mind be so focused so that our life actions will be as well.
Have a great day LIVING BY THE RENEWED MIND IN CHRIST!

The Passing And Lasting!
"Over the triple doorways of the cathedral of Milan there are three inscriptions spanning the splendid arches. Over one is carved a beautiful wreath of roses, and underneath it is the legend, "All that which pleases is but for a moment." Over the other is sculptured a cross, and there are the words, "All that which troubles us is but for a moment." But underneath the great central entrance to the main aisle is the inscription, "That only is important which is eternal." If we always realize these three truths, we will not let trifles trouble us, not be interested so much in the passing pleasures of the hour. We should live for the permanent and the eternal. (Source unknown)" [via Bible.org]
On what have we CENTERED OUR FOCUS? According to my computer phrase search of the King James Version of the Bible, the expression "And it came to pass. . ." (i.e. Matthew 7:28) is found 398 times. It is a statement referring to something which came to occur. However, it is also a reference to things of the past. Those events and situations happened and time moved on. Therefore, in a sense, those situations came and the moment passed on; they did not come to stay. The expression "it came to pass" can be very encouraging when we understand the challenges of this life will come to pass while it is the spiritual and eternal blessings that will come to remain.
Paul encouraged the church at Corinth when he wrote. . .
"(16) So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. (17) For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, (18) as we LOOK NOT TO THE THINGS THAT ARE SEEN BUT TO THE THINGS THAT ARE UNSEEN. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are UNSEEN ARE ETERNAL." (2 Corinthians 4:16-18 ESV)
When I read the list of some of Paul's experiences (2 Corinthians 11:23-28), many don't appear to be that "light", but they were "momentary" and that is where Paul focused. Compared to the "eternal weight of glory" of which he was assured, they were light in comparison. Those situations came, they passed, and Paul had the courage to press on with faith in that which would eternally remain his.
Life's experiences are real, whether good or bad. However, let us keep it all in perspective. May we choose to keep our FOCUS CENTERED on that which is of ETERNAL CONSEQUENCE so as to not lose heart when life is at its most challenging. Those things will pass, but our life in the Lord is forever!
Have a great day FOCUSED NOT ON THE TRANSIENT TEMPORAL, BUT THE EVERLASTING ETERNAL!

Truly Wonderful!
My wife loves to crochet and she is good at it. How do I know? Because she is able to keep her fingers going from stitch to stitch while watching television or listening to a concert or listening to conversation. For me it would take every bit of concentration I had to make those "knots" turn into something beautiful. Knots I know how to tie to stay tied. The knots created by my wife's crochet needles are a work of art. She also has the patience for the work because when she sees a spot not laying right because she dropped a stitch or counted wrong -- a spot that might never be noticed by anyone else -- she begins pulling and unraveling the yarn all the way back to where she noticed the flaw. My wife is also always looking at new colors of yarn and new patterns. She has made very few baby blankets, afghans, hats, scarves, or slippers that are the same. Each one has been UNIQUE for whomever she was making it; just the right colors together and the right shapes and patterns she sees matching the person she hopes will enjoy it. Though taking much time and thought, it is all a labor of love.
In viewing God, David wrote. . .
"(13) For YOU FORMED my inward parts; YOU KNITTED ME TOGETHER in my mother's womb. (14) I praise you, for I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, INTRICATELY WOVEN in the depths of the earth." (Psalm 139:13-15 ESV)
Each one of us is UNIQUE. Even our identical grand-twins have some differences in appearance and with regard to the things they seem suited for doing. Every one of us is a work of God designed with a purpose in mind. We are no accident and life should not be lived as such. Acknowledging the abilities and gifts God has given us, we are to use them in a manner which glorifies He Who made us that way. He put thought into our being as HIS LABOR OF LOVE with Divine purposes and an eternity in mind. As my wife smiles at the manner in which her handiwork is received, may we live to make God smile.
Have a great day SERVING GOD'S PURPOSE WITH THE ABILITIES HE HAS GIVEN!

The Chosen Repertoire!
As there are many types of music there are many different radio stations from which to choose. The type of music being played on any particular station may also mark the personality of the DJ (disc jockey) who chooses and plays the songs. The DJ of a classical station might talk calmly and softly while the DJ of a hard rock station might talk with a great deal of excitement and hype and then the DJ of a Christian music station might speak with many words of encouragement while the DJs of other stations match their tone with whatever type of music is programmed.
What kind of programming is coming from our life? Someone has said, "Gossip is the devil's radio, so don't be his DJ!" [posted on Facebook]
Solomon stated. . .
"(21) DEATH AND LIFE ARE IN THE POWER OF THE TONGUE, and those who love it will eat its fruits." (Proverbs 18:21 ESV)
What marks the fruit of our lips? For what purpose do we put to use our tongue. James said the tongue can be "a restless evil full of deadly poison." (James 3:8) However, we should remain mindful of using it to not curse, but rather TO BLESS. (James 3:10)
What repertoire have we chosen for the tongue? Instead of being the devil's DJ and playing his music, let us be the Lord's. Seeking to glorify Him and benefit the lives of others, His melody carried from our lips in life can be A BLESSING TO ITS HEARERS.
In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul urged. . .
"(29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for BUILDING UP, as FITS THE OCCASION, that it may GIVE GRACE TO THOSE WHO HEAR." (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)
May our speech fall into one of those three categories. Remaining so, others will be more likely to tune us in and hopefully be drawn closer to God.
Have a great day MARKED BY CARING AND COMFORTING CONVERSATION!

Lord Based Resolve!
Yoda (in Star Wars) may have spoken with a strange word order, but he did make some good points. One of his statements in response to Luke Skywalker was, "Try not. Do, or do not!! There is no try." Luke Skywalker needed a stronger resolve to unlearn some things and focus on what lay ahead.
Now, think about the focus of Yoda's statement. When it came to serving the Lord, Paul held such a perspective. He had learned to look beyond himself to the POWER OF THE LORD working in and through Him. That is why he could realistically look at his varied life situations (Philippians 4:11-12) and still boldly declare. . .
"(13) I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME." (Philippians 4:13 ESV)
Yes, Paul had a "CAN DO" attitude in approaching life in service to the Lord. If it was the Lord's Will, He trusted the Lord to provide the STRENGTH NECESSARY to follow through. Whether things were good or bad or he had lots or little, Paul trusted in the Lord to empower him to press on in his service to God.
Have we ever used the word "try" merely because we were actually really not sold on or committed wholeheartedly to doing whatever it was we were faced with doing? If it be the Lord's Will, LET US DO! More than merely an attempt, let us BE DILIGENT in putting forth wholehearted effort in doing what God, through His Word, has called us TO DO as His people. Equipped by God, let us ". . . BE STRONG IN THE LORD AND IN THE STRENGTH OF HIS MIGHT. (Ephesians 6:10 ESV) With HIS STRENGTH as our resource, we are amply supplied.
Have a great day DOING AS THE LORD ENABLES!

Meeting The Complex With The Simple!
Without question, LIFE IS COMPLEX. What contributes to the complexity is all the individual likes and dislikes coming from all the varying personalities making up all the people around this planet. Intellectual, sociological, and religious ideologies become complex issues for discussion. Yet, in the midst of it all there are so many SIMPLE TRUTHS which would bring about great changes to life if they were acknowledged.
I like to research and study. I fell in love with it in college. Yet what continues to impress me are the SIMPLE TRUTHS which mean so much to life. When this focus was originally written, I had just completed the preparation of Ecclesiastes chapter 12 for our Sunday evening Bible Study. Though not quite as challenging a study and discussion as that of Revelation which I had led our congregation in a few years previous, the book of Ecclesiastes has been probably what I would consider the second most challenging book from the Scriptures. This study was begun in October of 1997 and stretched to its concluding lesson in February of 1999. There were Sundays the focus was not covered due to time for our family vacations, being gone with the youth for their activities and other things which came up, but it had still been a long study. The congregation had contributed much to this study by what they had to offer in our discussions and though I gain much from my preparation for lessons I benefited from their observations as well. I enjoyed the focus, but gave a sigh of relief that we were finally in the last chapter. I truly understand what the author meant when he wrote: ". . . Of making many books there is no end, and MUCH STUDY IS A WEARINESS OF THE FLESH." (Ecclesiastes 12:12b ESV) There were some weeks I wasn't sure if I was going to get my preparation done.
But here's the point I want to make for today's focus. Solomon described many of the perplexities and unchangeables of this life. A focus on these could easily encourage us to give up trying to do the right thing since sometimes it doesn't seem to make a difference. Yet, after all the discussion of life's perplexing issues and situations -- it is a SIMPLE TRUTH which, when accepted, makes all the world of difference for approaching life and being prepared for the eternity to come. In all the struggle to grasp what Solomon was trying to get across throughout this book, it is with a very concise and SIMPLE focus that the book is brought to an end.
We read. . .
"(13) The END OF THE MATTER; all has been heard. FEAR GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, for this is the whole duty of man. (14) For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil." (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 ESV)
Of all the perplexities, of all the complex issues of life, of all the struggles people have with each other -- if God was truly reverenced as the sovereign in our life and His Word given its rightful place, what a difference we would see in life. The solution to many of the challenges of life boils down to the need for this focus. God desires for us to SIMPLY LOOK TO HIM AND FOLLOW HIS COMMANDS so He can bring about the best things for our life. Where is the complexity in understanding that? As complex as understanding God might be, He has presented His will in a relatively SIMPLE manner if we are willing to accept.
Have a great day SIMPLY ACKNOWLEDGING AND TRUSTING GOD'S WAY IN ALL THINGS!

Looking Ahead!
To have something to aim for helps us continue MOVING FORWARD in life. Though we learn from the past and can only live in the present (today), having something to look forward to provides HOPE AND INSPIRATION for living right and PRESSING ON courageously.
The Law was put in place "until Christ." (Galatians 3:24) It was intended as a guardian to lead to Christ. However, when Christ came He was not accepted by all as Who He was and is. (John 1:11) The coming of Christ, the Messiah, as the major thread running through the Scriptures (i.e. Genesis 3:15; 1 Kings 9:5; 1 Peter 1:20) is not just to be viewed as merely a matter of history, but is to be considered in a very personal way. As Paul focused the attention of the Christians at Corinth on the observance of the Lord's Supper, he stated. . .
"(26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, YOU PROCLAIM THE LORD'S DEATH UNTIL HE COMES." (1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV)
Every time we partake of the Lord's supper we are to reflect back on what Jesus did on the cross. (1 Corinthians 11:23-25) We are also to take a look within ourselves (1 Corinthians 11:27-28) as we consider our present relationship with the Lord. However, we are also given encouragement to look ahead toward WHEN WE WILL BE FOREVER WITH HIM. Though there are matters of history which may repeat themselves, in Christ we are living in a time continuum that leads on into a glorious eternity. May we LIVE IN ANTICIPATION AND READINESS for whenever our Lord comes or we come to Him.
Have a great day LIVING ANTICIPATORILY IN CHRIST!

Breaking Through!
As I write this focus I can hear the rain hitting the roof and running through the gutters. It has been overcast with rain off and on throughout the day. Though there were times it appeared the clouds might let the sun shine through, it just didn't happen. The late afternoon and evening came with several heavy downpours. Though I don't mind the rain, knowing it is what cleanses the air and gives the plants and forests a drink, I am encouraged when the clouds do break allowing the sun to shine through. Too many gray days can become depressing. Seeing the bright rays of the sun helps to pick up the spirits and draws us out into the fresh air.
In Isaiah we read. . .
"(22) I have blotted out your TRANSGRESSIONS LIKE A CLOUD and your SINS LIKE A MIST; return to me, for I have redeemed you." (Isaiah 44:22 ESV)
Sin ought to be seen as the darkness it is. It separates us from God. To remain in sin should be viewed as gloom and doom. However, it does not have to remain that way. God's desire was for Israel to return to Him. That is His desire for all humanity still today. (2 Peter 3:9) Repenting and departing from a life of sin can be like the parting of the clouds allowing the Light of God to overcome the darkness.
Remember John's encouragement where he wrote. . .
"(7) But if we WALK IN THE LIGHT, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN." (1 John 1:7 ESV)
Through Christ our sins can be "blotted out" (Acts 3:19) and blue skies can appear, allowing us to bask in the LIGHT OF THE SON.
Have a great day LIVING IN THE SON LIGHT OF GOD'S LOVE!

Two To One!
If I have two of something it is easier TO SHARE with another than if I only had one. Two can help BALANCE things out better than one. Two can have a better chance of DOING MORE than one. And what good is having something if that something is not used? Might we just as well be without it? Now, consider all this in light of the ears!
In the course of Jesus' teaching, He stated more than once. . .
"(15) He who HAS EARS to hear, LET HIM HEAR." (Matthew 11:15 ESV)
We find the similar notion in Matthew 13:9 & 43 and also in Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22; 13:9. Do we have ears? Are we using them? If so, for what purposes?
Our two ears may help to support our eye glasses or a hat. They might also be a handy place to hold a pen or pencil. The ears may also be a nice place to be adorned with jewelry. However, why did God doubly bless us with the gift of two ears? So we would use them for listening!
Since we have only one mouth and two ears, let us recognize when we should listen more and talk less. Having two, may we be willing to SHARE A LISTENING EAR. Let us maintain a good BALANCE IN RELATIONSHIPS by being willing to listen to another's needs and desires. Also, putting BOTH EARS TO WORK can do twice as much for us since what we would say with our one mouth we already know. May the ears God has given be used in ways that will glorify Him, help us help others, and bring learning to ourselves.
Have a great day DOUBLING OUR LEARNING AND SERVING OPPORTUNITIES.

Profitable Life Investment!
It is sad commentary on any society when "things" begin to be treated better and cherished more than people. Which do we focus on as the earmark of our life success, the accumulation of property or the actions associated with relationships? Someone has said, "True success is found in the lives you've changed . . . not in the things you've obtained." [original source unknown]
Consider Jesus. When He came into this world, though He was establishing a kingdom, what real estate did He buy? He Himself stated He had no place to lay His head. (Matthew 8:20) The glorious and powerful kingdom Jesus came to set up was a spiritual one; one in which His rule was to be established in the hearts of those who would accept His Lordship. As He tried to steer the focus away from the accumulation of possessions (Matthew 19:20-23; Luke 12:13-15, 21, & 32-34) we see how Jesus valued His contact with people and brought about real life change. When Jesus was accused of spending time with tax collectors and sinners, He didn't deny it. (Matthew 9:11 & 11:19) He associated with people from all walks of life.
Keep in mind Jesus didn't come so that we could merely have abundant "stuff", but ABUNDANT LIFE. (John 10:10) And Paul told Timothy to urge the rich at Ephesus to not "set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God" (1 Timothy 6:17 ESV) and "to be rich in good works" (1 Timothy 6:18 ESV) and so "take hold of that which is truly life." (1 Timothy 6:19 ESV)
In the Revelation to John we read. . .
"(13) And I heard a voice from heaven saying, 'Write this: BLESSED ARE THE DEAD WHO DIE IN THE LORD from now on.' 'Blessed indeed,' says the Spirit, 'that they may rest from their labors, FOR THEIR DEEDS FOLLOW THEM!'" (Revelation 14:13 ESV)
Our "stuff" will not follow (Ecclesiastes 5:15), but our GOOD WORKS for the Lord will. That is the result of treasure being laid up in Heaven rather than on earth. Possessions are not wrong, but they must never become a distraction from our trust in God and faithfulness to Him. We should also remain mindful of using whatever possessions we have to the glory of God. Remembering the VALUE OF EACH SOUL for whom Christ gave His life, may we seek to impact those around us in godly ways. That will mark the greatest success to which our life could ever be connected.
Have a great day MAKING LIFE MATTER BY ALLOWING THE LIVES OF OTHERS TO MATTER TO US!

To Do Or Not To Do!
Life is filled with decisions regarding what do to, what not do to, when to act, and when not to act. Sometimes our concern might be with regard to what others think. However, should we not give even more thought to what God thinks? His Will and purposes will ultimately stand. (Proverbs 19:21) We are therefore to plan and carry out our life activities in connection with what the Lord Wills. (James 4:15)
Recently my wife was pondering things and began to pose a statement and question on Facebook. As she verbalized it to me, we both immediately thought of a statement made by James. What my wife posted said, "It's NEVER wrong to do the right thing. Is it wrong NOT to do the right thing -- to not do the thing you know you should?" Then she included the James 4:17 reference where we read. . .
"(17) SO WHOEVER KNOWS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND FAILS TO DO IT, FOR HIM IT IS SIN." (James 4:17 ESV)
Besides considering our actions and their impact (which we should always do), we also must consider our INACTION and its impact. May we always exercise the DIVINE RIGHT of DOING WHAT IS RIGHT in God's eyes.
Have a great day FOLLOWING THROUGH!

Close Reminder!
When things are written down on a piece of paper, it is easy for that paper to get misplaced and what is written there to be forgotten. Today, post-it-notes have become handy reminders since they can be placed where we are most likely to see them: on the mirror, on a door, on the dashboard of the car, etc. Then there are electronic calendars which sound alarms to remind of appointments and tasks to be done. Some things are too important to be left without a close reminder.
When Moses was given the tablets on which were written the ten commandments (the testimony from God), they were placed in the ark of the covenant -- a very holy place -- for safekeeping. (Exodus 40:20) However, all the commands of God were to be kept before the people so that they would remember and obey them. More than being written down, the greatest benefit would have been found in them REMAINING ON THE HEART.
In contrasting the old covenant with the new covenant (that the old was looking toward as the shadow of the substance of the new) the writer of Hebrews stated in a quote from Jeremiah 31:31-34 . . .
"(10) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." (Hebrews 8:10 ESV)
And when Paul noted the manner in which the Corinthians had responded to the message, he wrote. . .
"(3) And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, NOT ON TABLETS OF STONE BUT ON TABLETS OF HUMAN HEARTS." (2 Corinthians 3:3 ESV)
In spite of the blessing we have today of having one or more Bibles close at hand, the Scriptures are still often neglected. We might take real good care of our Bibles, but the place for that writing to remain fresh is still in our MINDS and HEARTS! God's message is to be continually kept in MIND and taken to HEART so our life may continually produce righteous fruit. As Christians, God's commands and His Will should be more embodied in our daily lives than to merely appear to the world as written rules and regulations or rituals of which we go through the motions. As new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17) we are to have a new nature in harmony with the Divine will and thus a disposition that powerfully inclines us toward loving obedience. Living daily life based on the wisdom of God can be a powerful testimony that God's Word is not archaic, but still very relevant to life today. In fact its lasting relevancy is a sign of it being God's Word rather than man's. May we keep it closer than the written page so that life is lived by the message of God written in our MIND and on our HEART. That "implanted word" (James 1:21) can keep us moving in the right manner and direction.
Have a great day MINDING GOD'S WRITING ON THE HEART!

On My End!
Quite some time ago we went for a while with our internet getting kicked off line while we were in the middle of accessing it. Our internet provider kept telling us the problem was either with our router or our cables. Though they credited us for time offline, we still were frustrated as we replaced connections and the problem still arose from time to time. Eventually it was determined there was a lose connection where the cable was connected on the pole where the line began that led to our house. This was causing a leak in the system. Therefore it ultimately confirmed my suspicion that it was NOT US, but rather their system that needed fixing. And isn't that generally the way we are in life? It is always someone else who is creating the problem! It just couldn't be ME!
Many of you know that in October I ceased to be able to post to the "teEn-MAIL" website. There was a problem in the system I needed someone to fix. I continued to wait for the problem to be identified and so I waited patiently for someone to fix it. Last week the problem was determined and it turned out to be a problem with the internet browser I WAS USING. For some reason it stopped allowing the program to work. Once I downloaded another browser I was able to start posting again, and will now gradually get caught up on what still needs to be posted.
Yes, the problem was CLOSER TO HOME than I thought. The problem was AT MY END, not somewhere else. Once I MADE THE CHANGE things were again working as they should. And that is the way I must be in approaching God. His Way will always work moving toward the ends and purposes He has in mind. The problems most often arise when I GET IN THE WAY! His Way never needs to change, but rather it is MY WAYS that must be corrected and brought into harmony with His!
When Paul noted our basic struggle to do what is right, he stated. . .
"(13) Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! IT WAS SIN, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. (14) For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin." (Romans 7:13-14 ESV)
In referring to the old law, Paul acknowledged how it made him aware of what sin was. (note also Romans 7:7) We need to recognize how sinful sin is and that God's standard is not the problem, but rather the weakness of our flesh is the challenge. Therefore we must continue to respond appropriately to what His Word reveals to us and instead of being tempted to change His Word, we need to be willing to allow Him to change OUR LIFE. Through the means He has provided to become "a new creation" in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV) we are graciously and mercifully blessed. A changing world begins with a changing "ME". May we allow it to happen.
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING OUR CHALLENGE AND ACCEPTING HIS SOLUTION!

Godly Love!
Today is marked on the calendar as "Valentine's Day". For people in good relationships it is marked by the exchange of cards, candy, flowers, perhaps a date night, or other special acknowledgments of the relationship. However, for those who are single or struggling in a relationship, the day may be despised. As we have noted over the past two days in considering the subject of "true love" ["Heart Specialists!" (02/12/2012) and "Left Out?" (02/13/2012)], we need to remember how much we are loved by God and that His idea of love is what we really need to come to understand.
The world says, "I love cake" and gobbles it up, getting fat in the process. Or there is a focus on loving some activity and self is poured into it for personal pleasure. Then even infatuation (or lust) is called love and the relationship is approached in a taking rather than GIVING manner. The great thing that marks the essence of the love of God is that it GIVES and GIVES and GIVES.
Paul provides the best and most concise description of the characteristics of this GIVING love in the well known passage written to the church at Corinth. In what has been referred to as "the love chapter" we read. . .
"(4) Love is PATIENT and KIND; love DOES NOT ENVY OR BOAST; it IS NOT ARROGANT (5) OR RUDE. It DOES NOT INSIST ON ITS OWN WAY; it IS NOT IRRITABLE OR RESENTFUL; (6) it DOES NOT REJOICE AT WRONGDOING, but REJOICES WITH THE TRUTH. (7) Love BEARS ALL THINGS, BELIEVES ALL THINGS, HOPES ALL THINGS, ENDURES ALL THINGS. (8) Love NEVER ENDS. . . . ." (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a)
That, my friends and brothers and sisters, is love! Yes, we have read those verses before. We have heard them recited many times. However, we must continue to keep them in mind and continue practicing this selfless GIVING love. Paul clearly noted its qualities, knowing it would serve to bring unity among the Christians at Corinth. This GIVING love has power to draw hearts and lives together, encourage, uplift, and even dynamically change lives. Hasn't God's love done that for us? May His love work through us to do the same.
Have a great day LOVING GOD'S WAY!

Left Out?
I recently came across a notation stating that about 200 years ago a well-known encyclopedia discussed the word "ATOM" using only four lines while it took five pages to discuss "LOVE". This notation went on to reveal that in a recent edition of the same encyclopedia five pages provided information for "ATOM", but "LOVE" was omitted entirely. To me that was a bit shocking, so I decided to check a three volume desk encyclopedia (1982 edition) I have -- which is definitely not an exhaustive reference -- and found that in it three long paragraphs were devoted to "ATOM", but "LOVE" was not included at all.
Perhaps we might agree that in that 200 year period more would have become understood relative to the "ATOM", but what about "LOVE"? Perhaps to look at our world we would conclude that "LOVE" is not understood as it should be. Today I believe there are many relationship where "TRUE LOVE" has actually been left out. There may be infatuation. There may be physical attraction. There may be selfish motives for the relationship. But where is the LOVE? The question is even ask, "What has LOVE got to do with it?"! Well, actually, there is much in relation to life where LOVE HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH IT!
Thought the ATOM is small yet significant and powerful when harnessed, LOVE is huge and even more significant and also extremely powerful. Where would we be without LOVE? It was LOVE that caused God to send His Son (John 3:16) so that we could have the hope of eternal life. It was LOVE which motivated Jesus to give Himself for the undeserving (Romans 5:8), which actually includes all of us. And even if we do LOVE GOD, that is not enough. We must also LOVE OUR BROTHER. (1 John 4:20-21)
To not understand LOVE is to not understand God. Could we even say to live a life devoid of LOVE would be to live a life devoid of God? After all, LOVE is part of God's very essence.
John wrote. . .
"(7) Beloved, LET US LOVE ONE ANOTHER, FOR LOVE IS FROM GOD, and WHOEVER LOVES HAS BEEN BORN OF GOD AND KNOWS GOD. (8) ANYONE WHO DOES NOT LOVE DOES NOT KNOW GOD, because God is love." (1 John 4:7-8)
And dropping down a few verses. . .
"(11) Beloved, IF GOD SO LOVED US, WE ALSO OUGHT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER." (1 John 4:11 ESV)
God does LOVE us! Being the recipients of His LOVE the expectation is that His LOVE does not stop with us, but works through us in how we interact with others. "LOVE" might have been left out of the encyclopedia, but may it never be left out of our life! May the manner in which we LOVE clearly and powerfully help those around us come to understand what TRUE LOVE is really all about.
Have a great day LOVING IN A MANNER REVEALING WE DO KNOW GOD!

Heart Specialists!
It is amazing what doctors can do with the heart today. We were recently praying for someone in our community who was flown to a major hospital after suffering a heart attack. They had a 98 percent blockage and not pulling through was a real possibility. However, after stints were put in place, this individual is now home and doing well. Some heart procedures which were once considered serious operations are now routine. Still, with all the medical advances of our day, what can be done with a broken heart?
It is a lack of LOVE or the loss of LOVE that often breaks the heart. Someone has said, "The loneliest place in the world is the human heart when love is absent." [E. C. McKenzie] Does our heart go out to the lonely? Even with many people around, loneliness is still commonplace in this world. Someone else has noted, "Anybody can be a heart specialist. The only requirement is loving somebody." [Angie Papadakis]
In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica he urged. . .
"(11) Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, (12) and may the Lord make you INCREASE AND ABOUND IN LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER AND FOR ALL, as we do for you, (13) so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints." (1 Thessalonians 3:11-13 ESV)
Paul's relationship with these brethren was significant and special to him. He cherished it and longed to be with them. He was also greatly encouraged by the kind of relationship they shared with each other. This was a group of Christians who were already doing a wonderful job LOVING EACH OTHER. In fact, Paul stated they had "been TAUGHT BY GOD TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER." (1 Thessalonians 4:9) Still, he encourage them "to do this more and more." (1 Thessalonians 4:10) May we also become "heart specialists" by doing the same and thus impact the hearts and lives of others in godly ways.
Have a great day LEARNING FROM THE BEST AT TOUCHING HEARTS!

A Growing Issue!
"I don't understand how it works, but I've seen it." How much of life do we see fitting into such a category? We accept the moving from one season to another and the elements associated with each, but can we explain it all? We know it happens and has something to do with the orbit and tilt of the earth in relation to the moon and sun, but even acknowledging God having set it all in motion can we fully describe the process? Then we plant seeds in the ground and a process begins that we might nurture (cultivate and water), but do we cause the growth? Power of life is revealed which God placed in the seed and bit-by-bit a young plant is able to lift and break through the ground and begin a fruitful existence.
In one of His explanations regarding the Kingdom of God, Jesus stated. . .
"(26) And he said, 'The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. (27) He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. (28) The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. (29) But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.' " (Mark 4:26-29 ESV)
The Greek word translated "by itself" in verse 28 is "automate" from "automatos"; "of self" or "of own accord". Does the Greek bring to mind the English word "automatic"? It is the 18th century source of that English word. When the seed is planted and the soil is right, the result of growth and fruitfulness is automatic. While the sower goes about the things of life day or night, it just happens. THE POWER is in the seed that was sown!
With the growth of God's Kingdom, THE POWER IS IN THE WORD OF THE KINGDOM MESSAGE. The boast cannot be in ourselves. One may have planted and another watered, but it is God who has provided what causes the growth. (1 Corinthians 3:6-7) The transformation of an individual life is a gradual process and the growing of God's kingdom continues one soul at a time. We may not be able to explain the process, but can recognize the results in what is produced. What a powerful testimony it is to see the lives of individuals and congregations changed when GOD'S WORD AND WILL are allowed to germinate to do their thing. May we keep sowing knowing a harvest will ultimately come.
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD'S WORD TO DO ITS THING!

Pay Attention!
When someone is talking to us it is far too easy for the mind to wander. Sometimes it takes someone saying, "Pay attention!", to draw our focus back to what is being explained or said. This is often true in the interaction between parents and children. However, as children of God, how well are we doing at paying attention to what He has declared?
In the middle of telling several parables and explaining them to His disciples, Jesus stated. . .
"(24) And he said to them, 'PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU HEAR: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and STILL MORE WILL BE ADDED TO YOU. (25) For to THE ONE WHO HAS, MORE WILL BE GIVEN, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.' "(Mark 4:24-25 ESV)
Rather than a physical measure, Jesus seems to have been referring to the ATTITUDE toward His teaching. In the refusal to see and hear, there were some who could just never get it. It was not so much their ears were closed as it was their minds were and what knowledge they did have was not fruitful. A spirit of understanding was lost. Some who thought they knew, really did not; though claiming to see they were really blind. (John 9:41) No matter what Jesus did or said, they would not be convinced. Had He been listened to, so much more would have come to light. (note 1 Corinthians 2:14 & 2 Corinthians 3:14)
When Jesus is recognized for Who He is, then the whole of Scripture begins to make more sense. In Him we can begin to see more clearly how it all fits together as He was part of the plan from the very beginning. May the measure of approaching God's Word be that of the WHOLE HEART AND MIND so that we may grow more and more in the knowledge of God's Will.
Have a great day LISTENING WELL TO LIVE WELL FOR THE LORD!

"Trash Baskets!"
Children sometimes mix up the things they have heard, using expressions that make sense to them. However, in the process, sometimes what comes from the mouth of babes is worth considering. There was a four year old who prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets."
Though this child obviously confused what he had heard recited from Jesus' model prayer in Matthew 6:12 and His further teaching in verses 14-15, perhaps there is a point to his words we would do well to consider. Sometimes we need to forgive others and then be ready to offer support when they have dumped the "trash" of their life on us. Have we not at times needed someone to listen to our life's challenges and struggles and appreciated when they did so patiently? Providing support and encouragement may allow the other person to leave with that basket emptied of the trash and now carrying some hope for pressing on.
Paul urged . . .
"BEAR ONE ANOTHER'S BURDENS, AND SO FULFILL THE LAW OF CHRIST." (Galatians 6:1 ESV)
And what "law" would that be? The LAW OF LOVE (John 13:34) as Jesus displayed His love in willingly bearing our burden of sin on the cross. That burden of this world's sins was much greater than we ourselves have been called to bear as we interact with others in this life. May we be there for others and be blessed in like manner as we press on together in the hope the Lord has provided.
Have a great day HELPING OTHERS FOCUS FROM THE JUNK TO THE JOY OF LIFE IN CHRIST!
