What We Want!

"What we want!" That is most often considered to be a selfish focus. However, there is a life connection wherein such a focus ought to impact our actions. As we sometimes grumble about not getting what we deserve, is that always what we really want? In connection with a righteous and holy God, what do we deserve because of sin in our life? We deserve punishment. Therefore we should be most thankful for the grace and mercy God has extended through Christ. And is that not really the BLESSING we want? Though it is self-centered, it is in reality what God desires to provide. It is also to be the basis on which our actions toward others are to spring forth.

Peter exhorted. . .
"Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, BLESS, for to this you were called, THAT YOU MAY OBTAIN A BLESSING." (1 Peter 3:9 ESV)

Peter stated Christians were called to BLESS. Rather than retaliation, it is "good" for which we are to be zealous. (1 Peter 3:13) Seeking the BLESSING of God, our life is to be about BLESSING. Peter further expanded on the BLESSING (1 Peter 3:10-12) by quoting from Psalm 34:12-16.

Doing what is right regardless of the action directed toward us is not about what is deserved, but about what we would want; God's BLESSING upon our own life. Jesus and Paul provided the same instruction. (Luke 6:28; Romans 12:14 & 17) It is not about equality of action and reaction -- of like meeting like -- but of what is right and what we ourselves would most want to receive; BLESSING. That is where the equality is found as it is the need of all.

Remember Jesus' exhortation of. . .
"And as you wish that others would do to you, DO SO TO THEM." (Luke 6:31 ESV)

This may not be the initial inclination on our part. It may be a challenge with which to proceed. However, it is most assuredly the BLESSING we have received by the grace and mercy of God and should desire to continue receiving from Him.

Not about what is deserved, but about what we want; BLESSING! Rather than allowing the actions of others to determine our action or reaction, may the BLESSING of God be the motivation for how we treat others. It is a self-centered desire that says "Thank You" to God for His BLESSINGS and in turn BLESSES the lives of others. May such living turn the focus of others toward Him.

Have a great day GETTING THE BLESSING WE MOST WANT AND NEED!

So Shall It Be!

When it comes to both God's promises and His warnings we can take Him at His word. Though we may have many plans, some of them we may not be able to carry out for one reason or another. This, however, is not the case with God. (note Proverbs 19:21) He is fully able to carry out all He has declared. I was recently again struck by this thought while reading through Isaiah. In the beginning and ending of the prophecy God gave through Isaiah concerning Assyria we read. . .

"(24) The LORD of hosts has sworn: 'As I have planned, SO SHALL IT BE, and as I have purposed, SO SHALL IT STAND, . . . (27) For the LORD of hosts has purposed, and WHO WILL ANNUL IT? His hand is stretched out, and WHO WILL TURN IT BACK?" (Isaiah 14:24 & 27 ESV)

Who can negate the purposes of God. Though they may be ignored, that does not mean they cease to exist. It is God -- the Creator of this world, the universe, and all mankind -- Who has the FINAL SAY regarding all things. There is no greater power that can keep God from fulfilling every one of His Divine purposes. Therefore, with our life fully surrendered to His Will, we can know our life is resting in graciously good hands for both this life and the eternity to come.

Have a great day TRUSTING THE HAND THAT CANNOT BE STOPPED!

A Guide!

Looking a long way off, we are helped with a sense of direction. However, what happens when going through valleys, around curves, or through forested areas that cause us to lose sight of where we are heading? Recently while hiking a path I had not traveled before, knowing where one particular mountain was and trusting the direction indicated by my compass and the longitude and latitude displayed on my GPS I knew I was heading the right direction. Therefore my moment-by-moment focus was on the path -- sometimes quite narrow -- that was directly beneath my feet.

Life is somewhat that way as well. We know there is a goal. We have a particular destination in mind. However, during life's lows or amongst life's obstructions we can lose sight of the glimpses of where we are heading. Nevertheless, even when the destination is in view, if there is no focus on where we are placing our steps, we can easily stumble and fall. A focus on the PRESENT PATH is important.

All of where our life may lead us through has not been revealed. Though we have glimpses of a Heavenly future, we do not have all of life in view. Even as we wonder about life's unknowns, what we need to do is accept the guidance God provides for the JOURNEY OF THE PRESENT DAY. Day-by-day we draw closer to where He ultimately is guiding us.

One of the psalmists referred to the Word of God in this way:
"Your word is A LAMP TO MY FEET and A LIGHT TO MY PATH." (Psalm 119:105 ESV)

I think it is significant that the psalmist did not say God's Word is a "crystal ball" into our future. Again, though we have encouraging glimpses of God's eternal plan for us, He has not laid out a full view of our journey for us to see. What He does provide is the ILLUMINATION NEEDED FOR EACH STEP. Walking in a dark world, our best way of walking is to pay attention to where we are PLACING OUR FEET and THE PATH ON WHICH WE ARE PRESENTLY TRAVELING. It may be dark and gloomy ahead, but be encouraged by the path being presently revealed. Continuing to move along, that which is before us will become clearer as we continue to trust the guidance of God's Word. May we accept the light God brings for the present, paying attention to the WALK OF TODAY.

Have a great day WALKING IN THE LIGHT OF GOD'S WORD!

Begins Within! (part 3 of 3)

My stuff! My ideas! My plans! My way! When my focus is on me and your focus is on you, what happens between us? How can we unite in service for the common good? Then, when we allow such an attitude to be reflected in our relationship to God, what becomes of the possibility of service for Him? Some look to God as a "Cosmic Santa Claus" to whom they offer up their list so they can live life the way they want. Is there anything about our life that may indicate our own self as being our higher purpose?

Continuing into the next verse from James chapter four that we have noted that past two days, James stated. . .

"(3) You ask and do not receive, because YOU ASK WRONGLY, TO SPEND IT ON YOUR PASSIONS. " (James 4:3 ESV)

One reason for not receiving is not asking. James noted that in verse two. Another reason for not receiving is WRONG MOTIVES. Perhaps we would do well to seriously consider why we ask God for some of the things we ask. Who is it for? Who will it glorify? Whose purposes is it most linked to? What is the benefit it will provide? How essential is it? Can you think of other such questions beneficial to pinning down what is truly behind our desires when we make our requests to God? Prayers merely focused on gratifying our own selfish passions rather than seeking to honor God and His Will are not pleasing to Him.

Paul exhorted those at Corinth . . .
"(31) So, whether you eat or drink, or WHATEVER YOU DO, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD." (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)

I like to eat. It is pleasurable. There are a variety of beverages I enjoy drinking. God created us with taste buds and noses that can really appreciate food. There are many other things God has given us the ability to enjoy. However, the pleasure we experience is to be properly associated with His Will. Even when it is about self, it is still about God! Let us therefore continue bearing in mind that what is behind our actions always begins with the desires within. May that DESIRE BE TO PLEASE GOD AND SPEND OUR LIFE FOR HIS WILL. That is the greatest MOTIVE for going to Him in prayer.

Have a great day MAKING A HEART CONNECTION WITH GOD'S EAR!

Begins Within! (part 2 of 3)

What we choose to dwell on is important to consider. Cravings, desires, longings, and wants must be kept in check. Like yeast in a lump of dough such spreads to permeate the whole of life. Some are so determined to get what they want they will do just about anything to get it. COVETOUSNESS is too great a power to be allowed to dwell within. In fact, Paul called it idolatry. (Colossians 3:5)

Continuing from yesterday's passage, James asserted. . .
"(2) You desire and do not have, so you MURDER. You COVET and cannot obtain, so you FIGHT and QUARREL. You do not have, because you do not ask." (James 4:2 ESV)

James used some strong language here. COVETOUSNESS does sadly lead to murder in this world. It may shock us the point to which some will go to get what they want. However, in getting one's own way or getting what they want, there is more than one way to kill. Careers, reputations, self-esteem or self-worth, enthusiasm and joy, etc., have all been sliced and diced and killed by the selfish actions of others. How awful when such leads to infighting and quarreling within the body of Christ. Still, that was the context James addressed.

Perhaps God was not being asked in some of the pursuits because inwardly was the hushed understanding those aims were not being approached in a proper manner. What should be recognized is that asking God -- requesting according to His Will (1 John 5:14) -- can work toward maintaining a righteous focus and humbly place one in a position to receive the greater blessings of God according to His plan and timetable. In submission to God's Will, where He places one is often nobler and higher than where selfish pursuits might have placed the aim.

Let us recognize God's awareness of our life and how He desires to have us ask of Him as we go about our daily activities. May we also aim to FULFILL GOD'S RIGHTEOUS PURPOSES in this realm by finding the ways in which our life can CONTRIBUTE TO SUPPORTING rather than taking away from others.

Have a great day POSSESSING A HEART FOR AIDING OTHERS.

Begins Within! (part 1 of 3)

So much relative to our life action begins from within. What is seen by others outwardly is what boils up from the inside. This is why Jesus' teaching emphasized a focus on the heart from which the mouth speaks and actions arise. (Matthew 12:34; 15:18-19) When what is within is not controlled, how can we expect the outward to be restrained?

James warned. . .
"(1) What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that YOUR PASSIONS ARE AT WAR WITHIN YOU? " (James 4:1 ESV)

Is there a war going on closer to home than we might like to admit? Unrest on the outside often begins with turmoil on the inside. What is going on relative to our passions? Are we passionate about the right things or is there a battle going on within that we are allowing to spill out on others? Though truth rightfully finds itself in conflict with that which is false, most quarrels arise from too much focus on what self desires. Self-centeredness is one of the most common promoters of conflict in about any level of society. Then there are also times when one doesn't feel good about themselves that they tend to take it out on others. This, again, is an example of inner turmoil allowed to outwardly erupt and create conflict.

Life right with God brings us PEACE WITH HIM. "Passions" (Greek "hedone", from which comes the word "hedonism") must be restrained. Being right with God also aids in providing PEACE WITHIN ourselves even when conflict may be around us. Remaining CALM WITHIN can prompt calmer actions or reactions to the situations we encounter. May we experience more and more of that victory within.

Have a great day SEEKING THE LORD'S HELP OVER THE BATTLE WITHIN!

Smart Ox!

Sometimes people have been called a "dumb ox" or said to be "dumber than an ox." An ox is a burden bearing beast that for centuries has fulfilled a need around the world. Are they dumb? Perhaps that is debatable. Though they need to be guided, their strength is well utilized.

In Isaiah we read. . .
"(2) Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth; for the LORD has spoken: 'Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me. (3) The OX KNOWS its owner, and the donkey its master's crib, BUT ISRAEL DOES NOT KNOW, MY PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND." (Isaiah 1:2-3 ESV)

Who would we never forget? Could we forget the parents who have raised us and provided for our needs? Could we forget the many ways in which they have revealed their love for us? Would we forget someone who gave us a valuable gift? Would we lack remembrance of someone who completely took care of our debts? Would we forget a person who had saved our life?

What about GOD? Have we lived in a manner that would seem to imply we do not KNOW GOD or UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP He desires us to have with Him? If so, we could be classified as truly being "dumber than an ox"! God has given us the wonderful gift of life. He has cancelled the debt of sin and saved us by the blood of Jesus in order to provide the assurance of life eternal. Let us NEVER FORGET! Let us NEVER LOSE SIGHT of all the wonderful provision we have received from His hands both physically and spiritually! Like the ox, may our life reveal we do in fact KNOW OUR OWNER and MASTER who is nurturing and rearing us as His children to be more and more like His holy essence.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE ETERNAL PROVIDER OF OUR GREATEST NEEDS!

Perspective!

A "bird's eye view". When I was a child I fell in love with that view from the branches of trees. Now I look forward to that view when hiking in the mountains. I love the perspective FROM ABOVE. I live in a region where we have to cross bridges, use ferries, or drive around bodies of water to get from one place to another. However, FROM ABOVE, those places don't look so far apart. Getting up high enough, other mountains may appear as molehills. Rivers winding through the landscape below appear as bubbling brooks. Highways may appear as little trails. Everything below seems smaller when viewed FROM ABOVE.

When considering life, sometimes we view its challenges as huge and insurmountable. Such is the view when we face them on their level. It is when our vision is enabled to rise above them that we gain a whole new perspective and sometimes it takes others to help lift our view to that point.

Rather than "a human view" it is a "GOD'S EYE VIEW" we need to gain! That is what Israel needed when they had their first opportunity to enter the promised land. Had they taken on a "GOD'S EYE VIEW" rather than a "man's eye view", instead of grasshoppers they would have seen themselves as men being accompanied by God. (Numbers 13:33) It is the perspective we need as well. That is the view that makes molehills out of mountains instead of the other way around.

Solomon noted. . .
"(3) The EYES OF THE LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE, keeping watch on the evil and the good." (Proverbs 15:3 ESV)

All of life is in full view of God. That is why we need to seek to gain His perspective. He sees all as it actually is!

Peter, quoting from Psalm 34:15-16, encouraged. . .
"(12) For THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE ON THE RIGHTEOUS, and HIS EARS ARE OPEN TO THEIR PRAYER. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." (1 Peter 3:12 ESV)

God is fully aware of what is going on in our life and is not against us. His eyes and His ears are toward us. As we live our life let us accept God's direction as we trust the view He has of everything FROM ABOVE.

Have a great day COMPARING LIFE'S CHALLENGES WITH THE BIGNESS OF GOD!

Cleaned Up!

When I mow our lawn I wear an old pair of jeans that are grass stained and even have a few holes in them. The shoes I wear are also dirty and almost worn out. That's what I wear because I know I am going to get dirty and sweaty pushing the mower and emptying the grass. When I am done, I clean up by TAKING OFF those old clothes, showering, and PUTTING ON clean clothes that will be more presentable when I go out to interact with others. I also usually get a drink to quench my thirst and eat something to replace the calories burned while mowing. Leaving the dirt behind I am really ready to press on into the rest of my day and its activities.

There are other times we may find ourselves freshening up and CHANGING OUR CLOTHES. What we TAKE OFF relates to what was done in the past while what is PUT ON relates to what we are anticipating for the future. The most significant focus on such relates to our coming to Christ and then pressing on in life in Him.

James exhorted. . .
"(21) Therefore PUT AWAY ALL FILTHINESS and rampant wickedness and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE IMPLANTED WORD, which is able to save your souls." (James 1:21 ESV)

The Greek translated "put away" is "apotithemi", meaning "to put off" or "lay aside". [source: W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] With James' connection to "all filthiness" we might picture the putting off of dirty clothes. There is the need for the clean.

Paul had the same idea in mind where he wrote. . .
"The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us CAST OFF the works of darkness and PUT ON the armor of light." (Romans 13:12 ESV)

A change to take place! Something CAST OFF or TAKEN OFF so that something else can be PUT ON. Paul meant the same thing when he urged the PUTTING OFF of the old self -- that which belonged to the "former manner of life" -- and to PUT ON the new self. (Ephesians 4:22-24) We are to leave the dirt behind! Having CHANGED to proper spiritual garments, we are to also accept the nourishment of the "implanted word". (James 1:21) It needs to be internalized so our outward life will be properly directed. Then we are ready to press on into the rest of our life and its activities.

Have a great day ALL SPIFFED UP IN CHRIST FOR SPIRITUAL LIVING!

An Expectation!

"If I had more, I would give." Have we heard such a statement made or made it ourselves? Though the amount of our giving or the nature of what is given may relate to what we have (note 2 Corinthians 8:12) isn't there something we all can give? How much does it cost us to give some encouragement or a hug? Or how about a listening ear or service of some kind? Yes, that may cost some time, but when we humbly acknowledge those being our own need at times, are not others worth the investment as well?

Under the Mosaic Law, every high priest was appointed with the expectation they would "OFFER GIFTS AND SACRIFICES." (Hebrews 8:3) Other priests assisted him in that function. When Jesus came as the High Priest of a different order on our behalf, He also was to have "SOMETHING TO OFFER." (Hebrews 8:3) At that time there was still a priesthood offering gifts according to the law. (Hebrews 8:4) Jesus' ministry was of one described as being "much more excellent" than the old. (Hebrews 8:6)

When we consider what we have become in Christ, we too have been called on to give. Remember Peter's acknowledgement of what we collectively are in Christ. We read. . .

"(9) But you are a chosen race, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (10) Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." (1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV) [note also 1 Peter 2:5]

Under the law given to Moses, everyone had to take their offering to the PRIESTS WHO OFFERED them. Through Jesus the Son, God provided the sufficient means of dealing with our sin "once for all when HE OFFERED UP HIMSELF." (Hebrews 7:27) But as a "ROYAL PRIESTHOOD" who through Christ pray directly to the Father, what is the expectation of OUR OFFERING?

Jesus asserted. . .
"(23) And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY and FOLLOW ME. (24) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. (25) For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself.'" (Luke 9:23-25 ESV)

And Paul exhorted. . .
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to PRESENT YOUR BODIES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1 ESV)

SOMETHING TO GIVE under the Old, THEY GAVE sacrifices. SOMETHING TO GIVE in moving from the Old to the New, JESUS GAVE Himself. Under Christ we too have SOMETHING TO GIVE; OURSELVES!

We may have money to give and the work of the Lord needs that kind of support. We may have abilities that can further the work of the Lord and we ought to be good stewards of them to His glory. However, all of that begins through the GIVING OF OURSELVES back to God. Regardless of economic status, if we have our life, WE HAVE ENOUGH TO GIVE! May we not be guilty of holding any aspect of it back from Him Who has given it.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE EXPECTATION OF OUR OFFERING!

Easy To Get Caught Up In!

Some things are easy to get caught up in simply because we are close enough to be ensnared. It can be like stepping on a net and soon finding ourselves entangled in it. Therefore we need to watch our step and consider what we get drawn toward.

Solomon stated. . .
"(19) Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler." (Proverbs 20:19 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"A gossip goes around telling secrets, so don't hang around with chatterers."

Babblers and chatterers are those who talk too much. In the midst of so much talk they often let things slip that should not be said. Hanging around such people can cause us to get drawn into being a contributor to the flow of information. Even if we don't intend to pass on the information, by standing and listening to it we may come away with a tainted view of the individual spoken of and we stand the chance of letting it slip out in conversation at some other time. Also, if someone is talking to us about others, it is very likely they talk to others about us.

Sometimes gossip takes place under the guise of concern or helpfulness. But, if we have someone share their own need for prayer with us, we should guard that confidence they have shown in us and not pass it along to others for prayer UNLESS they have given us permission to do so. [Of course there are the exceptions when someone is endangering themselves or others and in such cases only someone who can really help should be contacted.]

Don't become part of the chain. We may be able to trust our source, but can we be sure the one who told us was to trust theirs? Things have a way of getting mixed up, twisted, and exaggerated as the information travels from one person to another. This is truly the type of activity to AVOID!

Have a great day AVOIDING THE CHAIN GANG!

A Pledge!

Have you ever made a pledge? Perhaps you pledged a certain amount of money to a cause YOU BELIEVED in. Maybe you pledged to do something specific because YOU BELIEVED it was a good and right thing to do. A "pledge" is noted as a solemn undertaking or a promise of commitment.

In "Idylls of the King" written by English author Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892), we find the knight's pledge: "Live pure, speak truth, right the wrong, follow the king; else wherefore born?" What a marvelous pledge for dutiful service to the king. Purity. Truthfulness. Justice. Willingness to loyally follow. All with emphasis on the purpose for having been born. Do we not recognize the same to an even greater degree in our discipleship to Christ the King?

Remember Paul's exhortation to Timothy where we read. . .
"(12) Let no one despise you for your youth, but SET THE BELIEVERS AN EXAMPLE IN SPEECH, in CONDUCT, in LOVE, in FAITH, in PURITY." (1 Timothy 4:12 ESV)

Do we truly BELIEVE in Jesus for Who He is? Do we BELIEVE in Him as the Sovereign King reigning over our entire being? He is the "founder and perfecter of our faith", the one who willingly "endured the cross" and Who is now "seated at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2) Therefore, should this not also be the "pledge" of our life to Him, thus enabling us to be the right kind of example to those around us? Let it be so! Otherwise, "else wherefore born" if it is not for His purposes and glory?

Have a great day LIVING IN ACCORDANCE WITH OUR REBIRTH IN CHRIST!

Need To Know!

Why do some in America want "In God We Trust" off of our currency? Perhaps it is because they do not KNOW GOD and are instead trusting in their wealth. Why do many not want God mentioned in public? Because they do not KNOW GOD and would rather talk about themselves. Why do many not want the morality of God's Word imposed upon them? Because they do not KNOW GOD, but instead think they have a better idea than the wisdom of God that has been around for thousands of years.

Though we might like the declaration (or reminder), whether the words are printed on our money or not, we KNOW GOD and will therefore still trust Him. Even if others around us may not want to talk about God, because we KNOW GOD let us live a life that clearly declares He is the Sovereign guide of our life. And even if we are around those who don't accept His authority and standard for living, because we KNOW GOD, may the choices we make and the manner in which we live reveal the wisdom of how God's Way brings the greatest blessings and joy to life.

Paul, writing to Timothy, exhorted. . .
"(7) Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather TRAIN YOURSELF FOR GODLINESS; (8) for while bodily training is of some value, GODLINESS IS OF VALUE IN EVERY WAY, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. (9) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. (10) For to this end we toil and strive, because WE HAVE OUR HOPE SET ON THE LIVING GOD, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe." (1 Timothy 4:7-10 ESV)

Because we KNOW GOD, our eternal hope rests with Him. Regardless of what else goes on in this world, to Him we safely "entrust our souls." (1 Peter 4:19) With our focus centered on God, hopefully others around us will begin to catch on as well. May they come to know the One really worth knowing.

Have a great day KNOWING THE ESSENTIAL ONE!

Heart Longevity!

We have a member of our congregation who is still recuperating from heart bypass and valve replacement surgery. It has been a long road. Her husband has a pacemaker that was installed a number of years ago. Another woman in our congregation is scheduled for the battery in her pacemaker to be replaced later this month. Perhaps we don't think much about our heart until it's function is diminished. Still, the heart is an amazing pump. It generally lasts much longer without any repairs than the water pumps, fuel pumps, sump pumps, and other pumps man has designed. Day and night -- whether we are asleep or awake, active or idle -- it just keeps on pumping and sending refreshed life throughout the body.

Doing some online searching I found the cost of a heart TRANSPLANT can range between $750,000 to $790,000, including the cost of the donor heart which was noted as being about $90,000. However, on top of this is the time spent in the hospital preparatory to the transplant, adding another $100,000 to the total cost. [source: http://EzineArticles.com/6258460] Obviously this reflects a REMEDY that does not come cheap. One would need some very good insurance coverage or generous donations to undergo such a procedure.

Praise God such is available spiritually which the Great Physician and Creator of all life is willing to provide. Focusing on a coming time of restoration we read. . .

"(26) And I WILL GIVE YOU A NEW HEART, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I WILL REMOVE THE HEART OF STONE from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules." (Ezekiel 36:26-27 ESV)

That is the most needed TRANSPLANT there is and praise God for its availability to all who will surrender to receive it. It is a heart designed to remain open to His Will and be responsive to His commands. It is a heart that will PUMP NEW LIFE through our entire being that leads on to eternal glory; a heart that will never need replacing again. May we allow the Great Surgeon to do His life changing work in us.

Have a great day INSTILLED WITH A HEART FOR ETERNAL LIFE!

Compelling Love!

Someone has said: "The love that descends is always greater than the love that ascends. The love of the child is only a response to the love of the parent." Have we witnessed that in this world? Have we experienced either end or both?

John stated it this way. . .
"(7) Beloved, let us love one another, for LOVE IS FROM GOD, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. (8) Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (9) In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. (10) IN THIS IS LOVE, NOT THAT WE HAVE LOVED GOD BUT THAT HE LOVED US and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (11) Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (12) No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. . . (19) We love BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US." (1 John 4:7-12 & 19 ESV)

How responsive are we to GOD'S LOVE? Are we allowing it to be a controlling or compelling force in our life as Paul did? (2 Corinthians 5:14) We need to keep GOD'S LOVE in focus in order for it to be the springboard from which comes our continued obedience to Him and the basis on which we relate to each other. We did not start this thing called "love" -- God did! Neither is this "love" to stop with us, but rather is to flow through us. By loving others, GOD'S LOVE is made complete in us. Let us each allow our Heavenly Father's love to prompt our every thought, word, and action -- and all to His glory and praise!

Have a great day RESPONDING TO GOD'S AWESOME LOVE!

Daily Do!

Daily I come face-to-face with needing to prioritize. Is that your experience as well? Because I have many things to get done, I make a list on my daily calendar of what I need and hope to accomplish that day. I even have daily deadlines, some of which are self-imposed to merely take the pressure off later. I don't like having to rush with getting things done at the last minute and so my lesson studying throughout the week is gauged as to how much is done each day. However, in the midst of this I often have to reprioritize; shifting the order of things on my original list. Sometimes things take longer than anticipated or interruptions occur (which is common in ministry) and I realize some things will not be getting done that day. Tweaking the list allows me to get done what must be done for that given day.

Priorities! Do you find them shifting in your life? Do you find yourself frequently re-ordering things? With busy lives, many worthwhile things to accomplish, full calendars, and the reality of only so many hours in a day do, you find yourself having to choose even between the good and the better or the urgent and the truly important? Still, even in the midst of that are there still some consistencies? Are there priorities that ALWAYS REMAIN AT THE TOP of the list?

The lists I work with on my daily calendar have the same priority ALWAYS AT THE TOP of the list. That first place always notes the portion of Scripture (from Old Testament and New Testament) I plan to read for the day during my morning time alone with God. Though other items on the list may shift or vary, that one is ALWAYS KEPT AT THE TOP of the list of things to do. If it is not kept there it is likely to be forgotten in the midst of the busyness of the day.

Does our life consistently reflect a GODWARD FOCUS each day? Do those around us see our "Christianity" as a central part of our entire life or merely a Sunday thing? Basic to the focus of Israel in the commands of God was their primary FOCUS ON GOD. (Deuteronomy 6:5) Their history reveals that anytime that focus was lacking, priorities got messed up and God's Will was left behind. Jesus reiterated that primary focus where we read. . .

"(29) Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. (30) And you shall LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART and with all your SOUL and with all your MIND and with all your STRENGTH.' (31) The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." " (Mark 12:29-31 ESV)

Jesus noted a first and a second. He was prioritizing. And God is to receive the NUMBER ONE FOCUS of our entire being because "the Lord is one"; being beside no other! God was and is to remain PRIORITY ONE of our whole life. Anything less than that and God is not What or Who He ought to be to us! Other life priorities may shift, but just as He is unchanging (James 1:17) may we retain a FOCUS ON GOD as the most significant thing of each day He provides.

Have a great day LIVING FOCUSED TO GIVE GOD HIS DAILY DUE!

His!

Pharaoh thought He was in power. However, he eventually learned that neither he, nor his magicians -- though they seemed to acknowledge the reality first after only the third plague (Exodus 8:18-19) -- were any match for God. The power of God was displayed not only in each of the plagues, but also in His ability to end them. Following the hail, Moses told Pharaoh that as soon as he left the city he would stretch his hands out to the Lord and the thunder and hail would cease. Moses than noted ". . . so that you may know that THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S." (Exodus 9:29)

A few days ago I took a long hike in the Olympic mountains. Due to our cooler summer this year (at least until this point) there were still a lot of the wild flowers blooming. Walking through the tall trees, admiring the colors of the mountain meadows and hillsides, viewing the world below from the heights to which I climbed, and listening to the relaxing sound of a creek running from a beautiful mountain lake by which I enjoyed my lunch; all of that lifted my focus toward the One Who CREATED IT ALL! Though there are skilled landscapers and artists who can be praised for their works, there is still nothing like that which the HAND OF GOD has created. We should thank Him for allowing us to enjoy it. After all, it BELONGS TO HIM!

David said it so well where we read. . .
"(1) THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S AND THE FULLNESS THEREOF, THE WORLD AND THOSE WHO DWELL THERIN, (2) for HE HAS FOUNDED IT upon the seas AND ESTABLISHED IT upon the rivers. " (Psalm 24:1-2 ESV)

Not only the earth and all that is in it, but I belong to Him as well. So do you. How is our life reflecting that? The God Who has the power to create us and the world in which we live also has reserved the power to bring it to an end. (2 Peter 3:5-11) May we always be mindful of that relationship and therefore the manner in which we ought to live. It is in HIS HANDS that our life is sustained and given its true beauty now and for eternity.

Have a great day RESTING LIFE IN THE HANDS OF OUR CREATOR!

Pressing!

In life we may face many pressing issues. They are things with which we must deal whether we like it or not. However, there is pressing that ought to be avoided when we understand the RESULT is not beneficial.

In Proverbs we read. . .
"(33) For PRESSING MILK produces curds, PRESSING THE NOSE produces blood, and PRESSING ANGER produces strife." (Proverbs 30:33 ESV)

Though variation is found in different translations, the same Hebrew word is used three times as the English Standard Version indicates. According to Strong's Lexicon, the Hebrew word means "squeezing, pressing, or wringing." We may enjoy cottage cheese and cheese made by pressing the curds. However, causing the nose to bleed and producing strife should not be our aim. The fruit or end RESULT of our pressing ought to be considered. Pressing to produce something good is fine, but when it does not bring about good, it should be avoided.

Sometimes we feel it is our right to get someone told! However, that may not get them sold in the sense of benefiting from what we think we communicated. Therefore, consider another interesting note in that the Hebrew translated "nose" and "anger" come from the same Hebrew root. Perhaps we would do well to consider where it is we put our nose as we seek to peacefully bring beneficial good to other's lives. Remember James exhortation to be "slow to anger" because it "does not produce the righteousness of God." (James 1:19 & 20) As the above proverb seems to make three obvious assumptions relative to pressing, may we seek guidance from above to wisely discern the RESULTS before we press a matter too far!

Have a great day SUPPRESSING THE URGE TO STIR UP STRIFE!

Hitting The Mark!

From what perspective do we LAUNCH our actions and thinking? Some people merely live aiming to please those around them. When that group changes, so do their aims. Such may mark the life of those with no true convictions regarding what is good and what is not in life. Does it surprise us what is sometimes applauded and honored in the world today? Does it seem like foolishness when we consider what the wisdom of God reveals?

Solomon asserted . . .
"(8) Like one who BINDS THE STONE IN THE SLING is one who gives honor to a fool." (Proverbs 26:8 ESV)

Picture the illustration. What use is a sling with its stone tied into it? The stone is meant to be LAUNCHED toward a target, but how can it when it has been bound within? No matter how much force might be behind the swing, the aim and the stone benefit nothing. It is also possible for the stone merely to come back on the slinger to their own injury. Picturing the pullback type slingshots of today we could see how easily the stone could merely snap back at the launcher.

Giving honor to the foolish or to foolish ideas reveals a lack of understanding the purpose of such acknowledgement. This type of action actually serves to LAUNCH further that which is contrary to the wisdom of God. Since it is ultimately God's purpose that stands (Proverbs 19:21) energy expended other directions is merely wasted.

It is folly to follow any other way but God's. (i.e. John 14:6) It is His Way that leads to the ultimate mark for which we should aim. May we remain careful regarding what we seem to applaud and uphold in society so that it is always clear our aim is fixed on honoring the Will of God!

Have a great day AIMING TO HONOR GOD IN ALL THINGS!

Our God!

How much time do we spend looking in the mirror? How much trust do we place in our own abilities? How much do we step out and do on our own without having spent some time in prayer? Perhaps the answer to those questions will clue us in as to who is truly the recipient of our worship? Where does our confidence and TRUST rest?

Habakkuk recorded these words of God:
"Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, WHOSE OWN MIGHT IS THEIR GOD!" (Habakkuk 1:11 ESV)

Arrogance! Pride! Self-exaltation! Self-glory! Such pushes self to the forefront and leaves God behind! In our country there are those who want the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" removed from our currency and other places where those words have been engraved for years. Not all who live in our country do TRUST IN GOD. Instead their TRUST is in the power of man and his politics. However, where has all that gotten us? Why is there much that is not getting better? Because God and His Way have been ignored!

The words of the psalmist still hold true...
"(10) The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. (11) THE COUNSEL OF THE LORD STANDS FOREVER, the plans of his heart to all generations. (12) BLESSED IS THE NATION WHOSE GOD IS THE LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!" (Psalm 33:10-12 ESV)

We may not be able to change the politics where we live since not everyone is willing to accept God and His Standards for life. However, by continuing to live with our complete TRUST IN HIM as we strive to live in accordance with His Will, we have the greatest potential to make life better for those around us. May the worship of our life remain centered in God as we keep our TRUST IN HIM, knowing that regardless of what the world does, His counsel still stands!

Have a great day MAINTAINING A GOD-CENTERED FOCUS!

A Durable Matter!

I have seen children immediately break into tears because their balloon merely touched a sharp blade of grass and popped. I have also seen children cry out as their helium inflated balloon drifted quickly out of reach and then out of sight as it soared high above. But give a child an un-inflated balloon and they will want you to blow it up for them. I also remember seeing a child who loved to break balloons become frustrated with one that just would not pop. The problem (or benefit to the balloon) was that it was not overly-inflated. Neither flat, nor stretched to the limit, it had a combination of GIVE and TOUGHNESS to make it survive.

Consider life. There are those who are a bit over-inflated with regard to themselves and have an aura of CONFIDENCE that may not be healthy. Then there are those who are "limp"; having a very low sense of self-esteem. Though HUMILITY is good, thinking oneself is of no account is not healthy either. There is the need for a balanced perception of self which provides some GIVE that accepts needed help, but also some TOUGHNESS (or CONFIDENCE) to encourage pressing on.

Someone has stated: "CONFIDENCE without HUMILITY is arrogance. HUMILITY without CONFIDENCE is weakness. CONFIDENCE and HUMILITY are both Biblical. And they're equally essential for a life of true faith." [original source unknown]

James encouraged. . .
"(10) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and HE WILL EXALT YOU." (James 4:10 ESV)

Peter similarly exhorted. . .
"(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU." (1 Peter 5:6 ESV)

HUMBLING ourselves before God is a part of a proper relationship with Him. Our life is to be fully surrendered to Him and His Will. However, in the relationship with Him there is reason for great CONFIDENCE for pressing on in life.

Even in the face of severe persecution the Hebrew writer encouraged. . .
"(6) So we can CONFIDENTLY SAY, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?' " (Hebrews 13:6 ESV)

There we find BOLD CONFIDENCE coupled with HUMBLE reliance on God! Properly knowing God we HUMBLE ourselves, but properly trusting God we can live CONFIDENTLY! Though the world may squeeze us, holding such a faith we cannot be popped. (i.e. 2 Corinthians 4:8) May we retain this healthy focus so that our life will be balanced and therefore useful to God as we yield to fulfilling His Will.

Have a great day PROPERLY SUSTAINED WITHIN TO CARRY OUT GOD'S WILL!

Pretending!

Things are not always as they appear. Therefore a closer look is merited. Some things are not intended by some to appear as they are. We must then attempt to see through the deception. The appearance that people put on is sometimes meant to mask the reality and such may be in great contrast either way. Solomon even noted this between the rich and the poor where he stated. . .

"(7) One PRETENDS TO BE RICH, yet has nothing; another PRETENDS TO BE POOR, yet has great wealth." (Proverbs 13:7 ESV)

Does that sound strange? Both the affluent and the impoverished attempting to appear as the other; neither wanting to be identified for what they are. Perhaps these poor do not want to be pitied while these wealthy do not want to be preyed upon. As the next verse indicates (vs.8), the rich may be held for ransom while the poor might not have such a fear. Pretending to be poor such threats are less likely. Perhaps we could say the poor have an advantage here.

The thing of which to be mindful is the status of the rich or the poor has its potential pitfalls. There are those who live BEYOND THEIR MEANS and not only suffer themselves for it, but their families may as well as they appear well off while moving deeper and deeper into debt. There are wealthy -- on the other hand -- who may live BELOW THEIR MEANS in the sense of not being the contributors and supporters in society they should be as good stewards of that with which God has blessed them. The lesson to take to heart is that regardless of possessing little or much, we ought to learn contentment (rather than greed) and glorify God in the manner in which we put to use whatever we may possess. Therefore the poor may be RICH IN SPIRITUALITY while the rich maintain an attitude of being "POOR IN SPIRIT" (Matthew 5:3) as they trust God rather than their wealth, knowing how much they are in need of His daily guidance.

No pretending, we all need God. May we therefore surrender completely to Him as we allow Him to use us and whatever He has placed in our hands -- whether little or much -- to fulfill His purposes in this life.

Have a great day HUMBLY DOING A WEALTH OF GOOD TO GOD'S GLORY AND PRAISE!

Pleasure!

In what do we find pleasure? For some it is a specific activity they enjoy. For others it might be eating a food of which they are quite fond. Still others might find pleasure in just being with those they love regardless of activity involved in together.

Solomon stated. . .
"(23) Doing wrong is like a joke to a fool, but WISDOM IS PLEASURE to a man of understanding." (Proverbs 10:23 ESV)

It is the "fool" who unfortunately is unable to discern what is wise and what is not. Life may be viewed as "fun and games" while failing to recognize its serious side. We may find pleasure in light moments and activities of little consequence, but do we find pleasure in the WISDOM of knowing what life's priorities are and when it is time to be serious? Have we truly come to know the pleasure of WISDOM so that we understand ignorance is definitely not bliss? What we don't know can dramatically impact our wellbeing both physically and spiritually.

For some it is far too easy to get caught up the stuff of life and then believe they must be pleasing God since they are so blessed. However, merely having position and possessions does not mean one is necessarily right with God. Remember the statement the Hebrew writer made regarding Moses.

We read. . .
"(24) By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, (25) choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God THAN TO ENJOY THE FLEETING PLEASURES OF SIN. " (Hebrews 11:24-25 ESV)

Moses focused on who He was and with Whom that identity connected him. It was WISE to stand with the people of God and his life was placed on the line in doing so. (Exodus 2:11-12) Had he chosen the pleasures of Egypt, he would have simply looked the other way. Moses chose not to.

The pleasures of sin or other aspects merely relative to the here and now are but for a season. WISDOM in applying God's Will to our life throughout our day-to-day activities relates to eternity. May we find our greatest pleasure in understanding such WISDOM from above.

Have a great day SERIOUS ABOUT GOD'S PRIORITIES!

Honestly, It's Basic!

Let me share a sad, but true story with you. Back in the early 80's I was teaching in a Christian School. During one of the Christmas breaks I went into my office and found that several answer keys were missing. Upon comparing the subject and levels of the keys that were missing with the subject and work levels of the students in the High School class it became clear who must have been in possession of them. The next step was to make a home visit, which I did, accompanied by one of the other teachers in the school. After explaining the situation to this student's parents, they called their child into the room and confronted him with the evidence, which he denied. The saddest part of the encounter, however, was when his parents looked at him and said something to the effect, "You have lied to us so many times before that you are going to have to wait and see how this turns out. We cannot stand behind you and support your claim." To keep the story short and get to the point of today's focus I'll just say that the school administrator was able to get him to confess and return the answer keys. He also ended up being dismissed from the school.

How sad that he had created a situation where even his parents could not accept his word for sure. The difficulty is that once one has been known to lie, how can they be believed about anything? Honesty is a basic basic! It's as basic as it gets because so much rests on whether or not we can be taken at our word. And if we are dishonest in one area of our life, why should we be believed in other areas?

Paul exhorted. . .
"(25) Therefore, having PUT AWAY FALSEHOOD, let each one of you SPEAK THE TRUTH with his neighbor, for we are members one of another." (Ephesians 4:25 ESV)

And in Proverbs we read. . .
"(8) REMOVE FAR FROM ME FALSEHOOD AND LYING; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me," (Proverbs 30:8 ESV)

After all, WHO are we striving to model our life after? Note the accusation Jesus directed at some who rejected Him. We read. . .

"(44) You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRUTH, because THERE IS NO TRUTH IN HIM. When he lies, he SPEAKS OUT OF HIS OWN CHARACTER, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44 ESV)

Is that the character resembling our life? Or are we aiming to be like Jesus who is ". . . the way, and THE TRUTH and the life. . . ." (John 14:6) and God, Who as the Hebrew writer stated, ". . . it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE." (Hebrews 6:18)

Out of what character do we speak? What has become our native language? Is it "lienese" or is it "HONESTese"? May we be people of integrity. Let us guard our words, remembering that honesty is a basic basic.

Have a great day BEING KNOWN AS ONE WHOSE WORDS CAN BE DEPENDED ON

Believing It!

A number of years ago I heard of a child's explanation to his mother following Bible class one Sunday morning. He described how when the Israelites left Egypt with the Egyptians in pursuit that they came to the Red Sea which presented quite an obstacle. As Israel's army worked quickly to build a bridge across the Red Sea, Israel's air force flew overhead to protect them. Once the bridge was completed and Israel had safely crossed to the other side, they noticed the Egyptians beginning to cross the bridge toward them. As the Egyptians neared the center of the bridge, Israel's forces blew it up, thus escaping from the pursuit of the Egyptians.

His mother responded that that was quite a story, but asked if that was really the way it happened. Her child responded, "Well, not exactly. But if I told you the way it really happened you wouldn't believe it!"

Some things are difficult to believe. Especially hard to believe are things we can't fully understand or explain. However, what makes things the most difficult for some to believe is their unwillingness to even attempt.

In Acts we read of Paul speaking at the synagogue in Pisidian Antioch. Following his speaking to them on this occasion they invited him back to speak again. However, when the Jewish leaders saw all the people turning their interest to Paul's teaching about Christ, they began to stir up trouble for Paul and his companions (Acts 13:44-45)

The thing I want you to consider relating to this account is the warning Paul gave during his first sharing with these people. We read. . .

"(38) Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, (39) and by him EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IS FREED from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. (40) Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: (41) 'Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE, EVEN IF ONE TELLS IT TO YOU.'" (Acts 13:38-41 ESV)

What wonderful things God's Word reveals to us. What displays of power are recorded in its pages. What marvelous events that defy nature because they are super-natural. DO WE BELIEVE? Some people don't! Some people won't! Still, let's continue sharing the wondrous message anyway. Perhaps they will finally come around. Maybe their heart will eventually soften and they will finally believe. Let's just keep living our faith and sowing the seed. We never know who we might be able to influence as God works through us.

Have a great day SHARING YOUR BELIEF IN WORD AND DEED!

Deprived!

There are times when SLEEP deprivation is experienced. Having a lot on our mind can make it hard to shut off the brain and get some rest. There are also times we might be keyed up over good things that have happened during the day or be excited about something planned for the next day. My wife generally anticipates me not sleeping well on Sunday nights after a long day of teaching, preaching, and interacting with members of the congregation. Sleeplessness can also occur when we are either perplexed or sorrowful about something that has happened during the day or due to feeling a bit anxious or apprehensive about something we might need to deal with the next. Many reasons may be behind a sleepless night. However, I was struck by a reference in a warning from Solomon that touches on being SLEEP deprived from an entirely different angle.

We read. . .
"(14) Do not enter the path of the wicked, and do not walk in the way of the evil. (15) Avoid it; do not go on it; turn away from it and pass on. (16) For THEY CANNOT SLEEP UNLESS THEY HAVE DONE WRONG; THEY ARE ROBBED OF SLEEP UNLESS THEY HAVE MADE SOMEONE STUMBLE." (Proverbs 4:14-16 ESV)

Proverbs 4:16 in the New Living Translation reads. . .
"For evil people can't sleep until they've done their evil deed for the day. They can't rest until they've cause someone to stumble." [NLT © 2004, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, Ill.]

"CAN'T SLEEP" or "ROBBED OF SLEEP!" What sometimes robs me of sleep is when I know I am at odds with someone else. Even if it is not entirely my fault, I may lie awake at night pondering what I could have done different or what I might do or say to bring about reconciliation. I think it is good for the CONSCIENCE TO BE TOUCHED in this way because a proper relationship with others ought to be important to us. (note principles of Matthew 5:23-24 and Romans 12:18) However, the picture Solomon presented is that the wicked can't sleep "unless they have done wrong" or "made someone stumble." Not because they are troubled by CONSCIENCE, but perhaps due to A LACK OF ONE. It appears to be a picture of the wicked lying awake at night planning and scheming rather than sleeping. It is such a path Solomon exhorted to avoid and from which to turn away.

Referring to the wicked who have no fear of God (Psalm 36:1), David noted. . .
"(4) HE PLOTS EVIL WHILE ON HIS BED; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil." (Psalm 36:4 ESV)

Though our faith in God ought to ease the anxieties of life and allow us to get a good night's rest, we may still experience a loss of sleep out of concern for others. It is an entirely different thing to lose sleep due to plotting against them. That -- in effect -- is robbing self of the sleep by being up to no good!

To be deprived of a little SLEEP from time to time is one thing, but the worst deprivation is to live wickedly and lose out on the blessings and good pleasure of God. May we focus on doing GOOD DEEDS FOR THE DAY. Then, if we do still lose some sleep wondering about the events of the day, we can have a sense of calm in knowing we have aimed to do the good Will of God rather than evil. And if our mind begins planning the good we can do for the next day God provides, we might find a sense of calm that ends up soothing us into the rest we will need to carry it out.

Have a great day DEPRIVING THE DEVIL OF HIS JOY BY DOING THE FATHER'S GOOD!

How Great! (part 4 of 4)

Something constant in an ever changing world. Something CONSISTENT in a non-consistent society. Something unwavering in spite of an ever shifting culture. Something stable in which our lives can be safely anchored until the storms pass and we can safely arrive home. Is that not what we want? Is that not what we need? Praise GOD for HIS FAITHFULNESS to provide such as that.

Considering again part of the focus of the hymn we began with in part one of this series of focuses, our God is more CONSISTENT than what mankind has made of this realm. The first verse of the hymn "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" notes God as being with "no shadow or turning", that He "changes not", His compassions do not fail, and how He has been is how He always will be. This reflects the same essence noted by James in encouraging his readers to recognize they could CONSISTENTLY expect good and perfect gifts from above. (James 1:17) The "Father of lights" gives in accordance with His own CONSISTENT character.

In the shortest psalm we read. . .
"(1) Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! (2) For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the FAITHFULNESS OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER. Praise the LORD!" (Psalm 117:1-2 ESV)

FAITHFULNESS reveals its genuineness the greatest when enduring. Are we remaining faithful to God as we endure some of the challenges of this realm? Consider how lovingly and patiently He has endured our times of rebellion and still FAITHFULLY offered us the opportunity for reconciliation.

GOD'S FAITHFULNESS reaches into eternity and will take us with it! HIS FAITHFULNESS endures forever! May our life CONSISTENTLY praise God for His great and patient love and HIS ENDURING FAITHFULNESS eager for all to appropriately respond to the eternal hope He offers.

Have a great day SETTING THE EXAMPLE OF THE PRAISE OUR GREAT GOD IS DUE!

How Great! (part 3 of 4)

They are called the "Great Lakes" because they are the largest group of lakes in the world. They are called the "Great Pyramids of Egypt" because of their huge size and amazing engineering for their time. It is called the "Great Wall of China" because it is an immense fortification running 1,500 miles and is a border even visible from outer-space. It is called the "Great Barrier Reef" because it is the largest coral deposit in the world, extending 1,250 miles. Are we impressed? Is such breathtaking to behold?

The psalmist David wrote. . .
"(3) I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations. (4) For your STEADFAST LOVE IS GREAT ABOVE THE HEAVENS; YOUR FAITHFULNESS REACHES TO THE CLOUDS." (Psalm 108:3-4 ESV)

God's GREAT FAITHFULNESS reaches sky high and His STEADFAST LOVE is above the heavens! Are we appropriately impressed? Do we appreciate it. Are we drawn to the grand spectacle it is in regard to our life? As we are impressed with the grandness of God's Creation -- which speaks volumes of His greatness, power, and wisdom -- does the awesomeness of the spiritual blessings He has provided take our breath away? Like the second stanza of the hymn we noted a couple days ago mentioned the expectation of God's cycle of the seasons in this realm, so we can live in expectation of His "GREAT FAITHFULNESS, MERCY, AND LOVE." Living in the glory of those blessings now we have the assurance of being lifted above the clouds through the heavens to be forever with Him when our time here comes to an end. Oh, how truly GREAT IS OUR GOD in every respect!

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE DISTANCE GOD'S FAITHFULNESS REACHES AND HOW FAR IT WILL TAKE US!

How Great! (part 2 of 4)

As the chorus of the hymn we noted yesterday states: "Morning by morning new mercies I see", oh what a refreshing blessing that is. A good night's rest and the peace of forgiveness! What better way to be able to move on into a new day?

Jeremiah wrote. . .
"(22) The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; HIS MERCIES NEVER COME TO AN END; (23) they ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS. (24) 'The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.'" (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)

With each new day God provides, HIS MERCY is extended. Is not the very fact He has given this dark world one more day, in itself, an act of MERCY? With a daily opportunity for being reconciled with God there is hope. Great is HIS FAITHFULNESS in providing ample opportunity to respond to HIS MERCY and grace. May we acknowledge God as our portion -- our true inheritance -- as our hope remains steadfastly in Him.

Have a great day AWAKENED BY THE BLESSING OF GOD'S MERCY!

How Great! (part 1 of 4)

Following reading over materials for our midweek Bible study being led by one of the men in our congregation, the suggestion was made to think of a favorite hymn, chorus, or poem that reflected the FAITHFULNESS OF GOD. The hymn which immediately came to my mind was "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" [Thomas O. Chisholm and William M. Runyan © 1923]. This hymn continued running through my mind throughout the morning. What a comfort it is to know how great is THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD! From there my mind began thinking of some of the passages of comfort and encouragement relative to HIS FAITHFULNESS that we would do well to keep in mind. Read the following words to that hymn and its chorus and then consider what Paul stated in his second letter to Timothy. Lord willing I will share three more passages over the next three days on which to meditate as well.

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow or turning with Thee;
Thou changes not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

(chorus)
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
[CCLI #3225044]

Can we find comfort and encouragement in those words? Do we acknowledge how great GOD'S FAITHFULNESS truly is? Can He be any other way? Do we realize how much it is a part of His Holy essence?

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul wrote. . .
"(10) Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. (11) The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; (12) if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; (13) IF WE ARE FAITHLESS, HE REMAINS FAITHFUL -- for he cannot deny himself." (2 Timothy 2:10-13 ESV)

God's promises stand! His Will shall come to completion regardless of the choices of mankind. There is no question about HIS FAITHFULNESS! The real issue is whether or not we will be faithful! The fact GOD REMAINS FAITHFUL means that as long as we have life we have the opportunity to return to Him if we have departed. He is eager for our return and though we should not chance putting it off, His promise of eternal hope is for those who respond the first, third, sixth, ninth and even eleventh hour. (note Jesus' parable of the vineyard workers, Matthew 20:1-16) Praise God for His GREAT FAITHFULNESS on which we can depend!

Have a great day RESPONDING FAITHFULLY TO THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD!
