Piece On Peace! (part 8 of 8)
In Paul's letter to the church at Colossae, we read. . .
"(19) For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, (20) and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, MAKING PEACE BY THE BLOOD OF THE CROSS. (21) And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, (22) he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him." (Colossians 1:19-22 ESV)
According to verse 20, what two realms does God's peace encompass and how does that encourage you?
How often do you experience a lack of peace because you are at odds with others?
What is necessary for reconciliation to take place?
What was the cost of our reconciliation with God?
Pray that you can be as gracious and merciful with others as God has been with you. This may provide the opportunity to draw others to the Lord to experience the same reconciliation we have received through Christ.
Have a great day APPRECIATING OUR RECONCILIATION IN CHRIST.

Piece On Peace! (part 7 of 8)
Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul urged. . .
"(6) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (7) And THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS. " (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV)
What is the key to warding off anxiousness according to verse six?
Have you ever faced a challenging situation where you still experienced a sense of peace you may not have understood?
Pray that God's peace will remain the guard over your heart and your mind because of your relationship with Jesus.
Have a great day WITH GOD'S PEACE ON GUARD IN YOUR LIFE!

Piece On Peace! (part 6 of 8)
Writing to the church at Ephesus, noting God's means of bringing Jew and Gentile together in Christ, Paul stated. . .
"(14) For HE HIMSELF IS OUR PEACE, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (15) by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, SO MAKING PEACE, (16) and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby KILLING THE HOSTILITY. (17) And he came and preached PEACE to you who were far off and PEACE to those who were near. (18) For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father." (Ephesians 2:14-18 ESV)
How can our relationship with Christ contribute to peace with others?
Do we appreciate how in Christ ethnic, social, economic, and other barriers can be removed? (note also Galatians 3:27-28)
What can we do to keep the wall down that Christ destroyed in order to bring peace?
Pray for the wisdom to recognize your part in conflict so as to be at peace with others as far as it depends on you. (Romans 12:18)

Piece on Peace! (part 5 of 8)
In Paul's letter to the church at Rome, he encouraged. . .
"(1) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. (2) Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God." (Romans 5:1-2 ESV)
Though we might find ourselves in conflict with those who would oppose the truth, what is our standing with God brought about by our Lord which brings us peace?
Is God's view of your life really more significant to you than the world's view?
How do grace and hope contribute to your sense of peace?
Pray for God to strengthen you with His peace so that you may remain uplifted even when some around you put you down.

Piece On Peace! (part 4 of 8)
As Jesus continued to encourage His disciples prior to His arrest and crucifixion, He stated. . .
"I have said these things to you, THAT IN ME YOU MAY HAVE PEACE. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33 ESV)
What is the realm or sphere in which peace is truly experienced?
Why would we still experience trials and tribulation in the world?
How does peace in Christ calm the heart even in a world of conflict?
The peace we experience in our relationship to God is a peace based on what the Lord has accomplished and ultimately brings about for us! Pray regarding life scenes which seem unsettling to you and ask God to help you trust Him for what He will ultimately bring about.
Have a great day CALMED BY THE PEACE IN CHRIST!

Even in view of challenges which lay ahead, Jesus encouraged His disciples prior to His crucifixion on the cross. . .
"PEACE I leave with you; MY PEACE I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27 ESV)
How do you see the Lord's peace as differing from that which the world may offer?
In what way may the world's peace be deceptive or short lived?
Pray for discernment in knowing the difference between the Lord's peace and that of the world so that you can experience the truest sense of it.

David wrote. . .
"(10) The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. (11) May the LORD give strength to his people! MAY THE LORD BLESS HIS PEOPLE WITH PEACE." (Psalm 29:10-11 ESV)

Since He is eternally The Sovereign above all, how does that encouraged you regarding future peace?
Are you enjoying the blessing of living under the authority of His kingdom?

[07/24/2011 "teEn-MAIL"]
PIECE ON PEACE! (part 1 of 8)
Have you seen the bumper sticker that states: "Visualize Swirled Peas!"? Sound good? I like peas, don't you? This is actually a spin off from the one that states "Visualize World Peace!" A lot of people have their ideas about what it would take to have world peace and unfortunately some would probably get into a heated argument trying to share their ideas and come up with a plan. So goes the wisdom of the world. Still, PEACE is something God does want us to experience. In fact, through Christ, He desires to bring it into the world.
Jesus -- the one prophesied to be referred to as the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6) -- had received a grand reception as He approached Jerusalem. However, Jesus was fully aware of the hard hearts of many (especially among the rulers) and all that lay before Him. He knew the heavenly plan in full detail and what He would have to endure in order to secure our salvation. Still He was deeply touched by sorrow in view of the non-acceptance of so many. Note His own words as He approached Jerusalem.
"(41) And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, (42) saying, 'Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for PEACE! But now they are hidden from your eyes.' " (Luke 19:41-42 ESV)
There was much Jerusalem and her people would suffer in the years that would follow and Jesus went on to describe some of what would take place. History bears the record to be correct. Could Jesus look at you or me today and make the same statement? Do we fully understand and accept that which would bring us PEACE?
So many today are still missing out on PEACE because they have not recognized from Whom and from where TRUE PEACE comes. Now I say "TRUE" PEACE because some may think they have found it, but is it a lasting PEACE? The only lasting PEACE is that which is linked to the One who is for eternity the "Prince of Peace."
Over the next several days meditate on each of the following passages relating to PEACE and consider the questions following each passage. Also spend some time in prayer associated with each focus. I pray that these passages from God's Word will uplift you and give you the courage to press on in spite of the life challenges you might be presently facing. May these focuses also calm you in your daily walk.
Have a great day WALKING WITH THE PRINCE OF PEACE!

Content With A Tent!
Elaborate structures have been built in the name of religion. Monuments. Cathedrals. Palaces. Even the temple built by Solomon was awesome to behold. It was David who first had the desire, but it was not for him to build. David appeared to have been struck by the thought as he lived in a house of cedar, why should the ark of God be housed in a tent? (2 Samuel 7:2; 1 Chronicles 17:1)
Now consider this. Though God gave the command and the very specific instructions for the building of the tabernacle, it was not so with the temple. There were aspects of the temple which mirrored the tabernacle, but its design was much more elaborate. It seems God was content with His presence being represented in a tent. (2 Samuel 7:5-7; 1 Chronicles 17:4-6) It is not that God was contained there, for even Solomon acknowledged the temple he built could not contain God, Whom even "heaven and the highest heaven" could not contain. (1 Kings 8:27; 2 Chronicles 2:6 & 6:18) However, the presence of God in the midst of Israel was represented by it.
Does this cause us to wonder what it is God desires today? Is it some elaborate structure? Is it a holy shrine of some sort? Is it a high tower reaching to Heaven? Is it an ornate gold plated and gleaming building surpassing any other structures on the earth?
Paul referred to OUR PHYSICAL BODY as a tent where we read. . .
"(1) For we know that if THE TENT THAT IS OUR EARTHLY HOME is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2) For IN THIS TENT WE GROAN, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, (3) if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. (4) For while we are STILL IN THIS TENT, we groan, being burdened -- not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. (5) He who has prepared us for this very thing is GOD, who HAS GIVEN US THE SPIRIT AS A GUARANTEE." (2 Corinthians 5:1-5 ESV)
He also referred to OUR PHYSICAL BODY as a temple where we read. . .
"(19) Or do you not know that YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHIN YOU, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (20) for you were bought with a price. So GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV)
That is the very personal connection with our life God desires more than monuments and buildings. Rather than symbolically housed in some fancy gold covered building, His desire is that by His Spirit His abiding presence, Divine essence, and the treasure of salvation in Jesus Christ is to be housed in "JARS OF CLAY." (2 Corinthians 4:7)
Though God does have something grander in mind for us -- a heavenly dwelling -- He is content for now to have part of His essence ABIDING IN THE TENT OF OUR BODY. May we honor His presence by daily glorifying Him with it.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY FUTURE GLORY WHILE CONTENT TO GLORIFY GOD NOW IN THE TENT OF THE FLESH!

In Mind!
As we move on through life, we may hold many thoughts and plans in mind; the things we consider most significant to us and the future that may lay before us. Perhaps the significance of some of those thoughts and plans will diminish in time and other things of life may prevent us from fulfilling all our plans. Still, keeping a vision of some type for life encourages us to press on in the hope we may at least accomplish something worthwhile on life's journey.
David noted. . .
"YOU HAVE MULTIPLIED, O LORD MY GOD, your wondrous deeds and YOUR THOUGHTS TOWARD US; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told." (Psalm 40:5 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, ". . . Your PLANS ARE TOO NUMEROUS TO LIST. . ." [NLT, © 2004, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois]
Though we have many plans, how open are we to what GOD HAS IN MIND for us? Since it is ultimately His purposes that will stand (Proverbs 19:21), don't we want to be certain our lives are within the realm of those plans?
In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth, he encouraged. . .
"(9) But, as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, WHAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM' -- (10) these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God." (1 Corinthians 2:9-10 ESV) [Paul's quote was from Isaiah 64:4)
Let us be encouraged by ALL THE THOUGHTS OF GOD with regard to our life -- our past, present, and future -- and the utmost good He desires to bring about for us. God is fully aware of everything going on in our life now and views us with eternity in mind. We may not be able to list everything He has already done on our behalf and may in time be amazed at what else He brings us to and through, but may we continue to entrust our life to Him as we keep eternity in view.
Have a great day KNOWING GOD IS THINKING OF YOU!

Freshening The Air!
Air fresheners are wonderful at covering up or masking strong odors. Some even have the ability to kill the germs causing the foul smell. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a freshener to deal with the situations when ATTITUDES STINK? Some people just put on an "air" that can stink up a whole room or workplace. Bad ATTITUDES can quickly spoil that which might otherwise be sweet. People in a good mood can have that atmosphere quickly spoiled just by one person with a bad ATTITUDE.
Solomon noted. . .
"Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor." (Ecclesiastes 10:1 ESV)
How we approach life situations as we interact with others can make a world of difference one way or the other. We can either help make things smell foul or sweet and that often begins with our own ATTITUDE. Have we at times been the "dead fly" that has made the ointment stink? Let us seek to bring not death, but rather life and refreshment to life's situations.
Perhaps people with "stink'n think'n" ought to tape an air freshener to their forehead as a reminder to not spreading the stench! May we leave "stink'n think'n" behind as we strive to be mindful of walking in love as Jesus did, giving Himself as a "FRAGRANT OFFERING." (Ephesians 5:2) The "aroma of Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:15) is the best and most beneficial scent we can spread in life.
Have a great day BRINGING A REFRESHING AIR WHEREVER WE GO!

Our Delight!
Yesterday we noted the idea of delighting in the works of God. (Psalm 111:2-4) One aspect of God's great and beneficent work is the providing of righteous commands to lead to righteous living. The next psalm begins. . .
"(1) Praise the LORD! BLESSED IS THE MAN WHO FEARS THE LORD, WHO GREATLY DELIGHTS IN HIS COMMANDMENTS! (2) His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. (3) Wealth and riches are in his house, and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS ENDURES FOREVER." (Psalm 112:1-3 ESV)
This psalm followed the expression of the previous psalm which noted "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." (Psalm 111:10 ESV) Therefore, these two psalms appear to be closely linked; the one leading into the other. Those who have a proper reverential fear of the Lord will delight in His works, including HIS COMMANDS. However, not all delight in the COMMANDS OF GOD. They delight in doing their own thing. What then becomes of their life and their works? With some, their works simply die with them. The delight is only for this realm. It is the righteous (those living to please the Lord), who have their deeds follow them. (Revelation 14:13)
By living godly lives we have the potential of bringing blessing to the lives of others, especially to those of our family and the generations which are to follow us. Living in the righteousness of God we can leave a legacy behind worth following, thus equipping subsequent generations with a foundation on which to build and bless even more generations. May our delight continue in the COMMANDS OF GOD so that we will exercise wisdom that leads to a delightful God pleasing life now and a most delightful eternity to come! It is the blessing we receive from Him.
Have a great day FINDING PLEASURE IN PLEASING GOD!

Studied Works!
There are those who study the works of Shakespeare, analyzing the meaning of his writings. Some study the works of artists, looking for hidden messages in the paintings. Then there are those who study the works of this world's philosophers, seeking the meaning of life. And the list goes on of the many varying works that may be studied deep and long. However, in the midst of these studies are those who are always learning, but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:7) How we study is important, but also what we study needs to be given serious consideration. We may enjoy a variety of studies and the world is filled with amazing subjects to be discussed, but what is of the most consequence to us?
In the Psalms we read. . .
"(2) GREAT ARE THE WORKS OF THE LORD, STUDIED BY ALL WHO DELIGHT IN THEM. (3) Full of splendor and majesty is his work and his righteousness endures forever. (4) He has caused HIS WONDROUS WORKS TO BE REMEMBERED; the LORD is gracious and merciful." (Psalm 111:2-4 ESV)
Are we continually mindful of the WORKS OF GOD? Do we ponder them? Do we study them, realizing they declare something about Himself? (i.e. Romans 1:20) It is the works of the Author of and Creator of life that testify regarding His ability to sustain it now and save it for an eternity. May we find great delight in coming to know and trust Him better through a continual study of HIS WONDROUS WORKS.
Have a great day BEING A STUDIOUS STUDENT OF GOD!

Doesn't Cut It!
A DULL knife does not do a very good job of cutting. It takes extra effort to make a DULL knife cut through something, if it is able to cut at all. Sometimes a DULL knife ends up cutting the user before they are able to cut through what they were aiming to. Sharpening the knife makes it more useful and gets the intended job done.
Apparently referring to an ax, Solomon stated. . .
"(10) If the iron is blunt, and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed." (Ecclesiastes 10:10 ESV)
A DULL ax. A DULL knife. Even a DULL mind (or heart). Just "doesn't cut it!"
The Hebrew writer admonished those to whom he wrote for their DULLNESS of hearing. After making statements regarding the eternal priesthood of Christ, the writer of Hebrews went on to state. . .
"(11) About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, SINCE YOU HAVE BECOME DULL OF HEARING." (Hebrews 5:11 ESV)
The Greek word translated "dull" is "nothros" which refers to being: indolent, sluggish, slow, or dull. [W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] These Christians of a Hebrew background were slow to comprehend or accept the truth relative to Jesus. Holding on to their Jewish understanding, it was difficult for the truth to sink in. They weren't hearing. They weren't listening to take the truths to heart. Spiritually, they were not very sharp. They needed to open up their ears (and hearts) and listen.
Have we ever experienced frustration when someone is slow to catch on to what we are trying to explain? Have we ever said (or felt like saying), "Do you need me to draw you a picture?" Think how God must feel about us sometimes. I wonder how many times He could have said, "Carl, when are you going to finally get it?" Thank God for His patience.
So, how can we guard against DULLNESS of hearing? First of all we need to recognize how some things are "spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14) and we therefore need to move from a worldly perspective. To sharpen our mind we need to develop and maintain "the mind of Christ." (1 Cor. 2:16) That mindset is sharpened by spending time in the Word to learn all we can about Christ and life to be walked in His steps.
Hearing only what we want to hear will not cut it when it comes to spiritual progress. Let us take to heart the Lord's urging of each of the churches addressed in Revelation to whom He stated, "He who HAS AN EAR, LET HIM HEAR what the Spirit says to the churches." (Rev. 2:7, 11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22) May we sharpen our mind so as to become better listeners to what the Lord has declared. Developing the "mind of Christ" we will be able to cut through the fat (ideologies and philosophies) of the world and enjoy the meat of the truth that will nourish our soul.
Have a great day DEVELOPING A SHARP MIND FOR GODLY LIVING!

Time Out!
When a child receives a "time out", it is because they have gotten in trouble and need to have some time away from play to think about what they did wrong and consider CHANGING THEIR BEHAVIOR. In sports a "time out" is used to refocus and regroup and then get back into the game. Sometimes a "time out" is called when things are not going well and the coach needs to have a few words with the players to get their heads back into the game. Spending a few moments in the huddle for some encouragement and direction toward being on the same page with the coach's game plan, such a "time out" can be a real GAME CHANGER.
Perhaps as we engage in the various activities of life we would like to put up our hands and call for a "time out." In life it is not possible to stop the clock, but there is a sense in which we can utilize a needed "time out"; a moment to refocus and regroup before getting back into the game of life. Such can also be A LIFE CHANGER. This "time out" is called PRAYER.
When King Jehoshaphat did not know what to do, HE PRAYED (2 Chronicles 20:12) and God brought victory. When an ordinance was established that no petition was to be made to any god or man for 30 days, but only to King Darius (Daniel 6:6-9), what did Daniel do? He faced toward Jerusalem and PRAYED anyway. (Daniel 6:10) When Nehemiah was faced with opposition, rather than being discouraged and ceasing to press on with the work of rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem, HE PRAYED (Nehemiah 6:9) and remained a great encourager of others. Even Jesus modeled the example of taking "time out" FOR PRAYER. (i.e. Luke 5:16)
When we are faced with challenging times, what are we to do? Let us also take "time out" FOR PRAYER, knowing that with God's help we can step back into the game of life.
In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul exhorted. . .
"(4) Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. (5) Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; (6) do not be anxious about anything, BUT IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION WITH THANKSGIVING LET YOUR REQUESTS BE MADE KNOWN TO GOD. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV)
"Time out" FOR PRAYER -- whether it be just for a moment or longer -- can be a real LIFE CHANGER as we are reminded of the mindfulness of God and that we are not alone in the struggle. When we become anxious or frustrated in life, looking to Him for needed strength and wisdom helps us get our head back in the game, rather than becoming discouraged and giving up. Victory is on God's side, so let us press on under the encouragement of His coaching as we remain open to the wisdom of His game plan.
Have a great day WITH SOME HUDDLE TIME WITH GOD!

Wanting The Best!
It is easy in this world to get caught up in what we want for ourselves. Whether we are talking about possessions or position the draw can be great. Even when it comes to religion, some make much of gaining a following after themselves in a manner that God can at some point begin to be left out of the picture.
Consider the impact our life can have on those around us when we genuinely want the best for them! With such a desire, we would be less likely to covet what others have or be jealous of their position or state in life. When our life ambition is motivated by or grounded in the Will of God, it can be a powerful thing in service TO HIM! This is what seemed to mark the focus of the life of Paul, thus aiding aid him in retaining a sense of humility while pressing on zealously for the cause of Christ. While other's were apparently making much of themselves in association with their ministry (i.e. 2 Corinthians 10:12 & 11:12-13) Paul never seems to have lost sight of who it was all for.
We read. . .
"(2) I feel a DIVINE JEALOUSY for you, for I betrothed you to one husband, TO PRESENT YOU AS A PURE VIRGIN TO CHRIST." (2 Corinthians 11:2 ESV)
Paul's "jealousy" was not personal; a longing for himself. Rather, his "jealousy" was "Divine" in its desire to draw all into a relationship WITH CHRIST. It was a following FOR CHRIST, not a following for Paul (note 1 Corinthians 1:12-15; 3:5-7) he desired to encourage. Whether he got noticed or not was not the issue. That people were responding to the message of Christ to FOLLOW CHRIST is what mattered most to Paul. Therefore he remained a good humble servant of Christ.
Desiring for others to FOLLOW CHRIST is wanting the very best for them. Directing others TO JESUS is the best use of our life. May we continue following Jesus as we humbly surrender our life to directing others TO HIM by example of the life we live and the truth of the Scriptures we share!
Have a great day KEEPING LIFE ALL ABOUT JESUS!

Need To Understand!
Do we sometimes find ourselves looking at the world and shaking our head? Do we say, "I just don't understand."? The real truth is, we do understand; we know what God has declared and are trying to live in accordance with His standard. It is the world that does not understand. If the world and its leaders understood the life God has in mind for us, Jesus would not have been crucified by the rulers at that time. (1 Corinthians 2:8)
David noted. . .
"(11) God is a righteous judge, and a God WHO FEELS INDIGNATION EVERY DAY." (Psalm 7:11 ESV)
Though some translations refer to God's anger or wrath, the Hebrew (according to Strong's Lexicon) expresses to denounce, express indignation, be indignant, or be angrily indignant. Our English word "INDIGNANT" refers to being "angry or annoyed at the apparent unfairness or unreasonableness of something." [Encarta ® World Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation] When we consider how some of what goes on in the world bothers us, how much more so God Who created mankind and still extends His wisdom for guiding life. As in the days of Noah, does it again grieve God for having made man? (Genesis 6:5-6) Though He promised to not destroy all flesh by water again (Genesis 9:11-17) -- setting the rainbow in the sky as a sign of remembrance -- a day is coming when judgment and destruction by fire will destroy this realm. (2 Peter 3:7 & 10)
We may see the wicked getting away with much, but their wickedness does not go without the notice of God. Neither is God unaware of our striving to live by His standard and for His purposes. There is just as much need for repentance today (Psalm 7:12 and 2 Peter 3:9) as then, and God's patience presently provides opportunity for it. We need to help those around us come to understand the absence (or restraint) of God's direct and swift judgment now does not mean He doesn't exist or that He accepts what is going on in the world. Instead it is actually a sign of His patience and desire for mankind to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) It is in Christ we are saved from the wrath of God. (Romans 5:9) May we remain there as we strive to draw others to Him.
Have a great day BRINGING TO LIGHT THE TRUE LIFE IN CHRIST!

A Prime Reason!
As Paul encouraged the church at Corinth to follow through in their commitment to provide help for needy saints in Judea, he reminded them of their readiness and zeal which had in turn inspired others to give. (2 Corinthians 9:1-2) He also noted how their generosity along with that of others would result in overflowing thanks to God. (2 Corinthians 9:12)
The fact people have needs is good reason to give when we have it to give. (note 2 Corinthians 8:12) To join in with others to support a worthy cause to the glory of God is also a good thing. For us to give and God to receive the thanks is an indication we have been acknowledged as having been used by God. That is the most worthy use of our life. However, the last verse of chapter 9 provides a prime motivator for cheerful giving.
We read. . .
"Thanks be to God FOR HIS INEXPRESSIBLE GIFT!" (2 Corinthians 9:15 ESV)
What a marvelous focus for Paul to use in closing his exhortation on giving. The Salvation, forgiveness of our sins by God's grace and mercy, and every other blessing we HAVE RECEIVED FROM GOD IN CHRIST should instill in us a spirit of generosity as well. God is the GREATEST GIVER and as we are willing to share what we HAVE BEEN BLESSED with, we demonstrate our own appreciation and thanksgiving for what we HAVE RECEIVED. Therefore our life too becomes involved in the overflowing of thanks to God.
Have a great day GIVING AS WE HAVE RECEIVED!

Puzzles can be puzzling whether we are talking about word puzzles or picture puzzles. However, with either there is the need to look for the obvious and begin from there. Now, I like the picture puzzles with big pieces and a shaped border for each one; the puzzles made for very young children. When I see the pile of pieces for a 500 or more piece jigsaw puzzle, it appears overwhelming. (Incidentally, my wife loves the thousand or more piece puzzles.)
The key to putting a picture puzzle together is to first become familiar with the picture on the box. That is how the finished puzzle is to look. Then, beginning with the obvious pieces (like the four corners and the edges), by process of elimination the puzzle can be eventually completed. I've even known some who would separate the various colored pieces into pie plates in order to group them for those sections of the puzzle. It may take time and a considerable amount of patience, but is possible.
Life can be puzzling. Haven't we experienced it? Besides everything going on around us of which we try to make sense, we struggle GETTING OUR OWN LIFE TOGETHER. We are limited by not always having a full view of it. Sometimes pieces are missing or attempts are made to put them in the wrong place. Still, just as with a picture puzzle, that which is obvious is where we ought to begin working on our life. In time God -- Who has the whole picture in view, knowing where every piece properly fits -- will help us bring it to completion.
Remember, initially we were created to posses the image of God. (Genesis 1:26-27) Is that picture being kept in view? If we are looking at a worldly picture, the pieces of our life will not come together as intended. The psalmist stated, we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), knitted together in our mothers womb (Psalm 139:13) in full view of our God.
Paul noted a picture of the transformation where he wrote. . .
"(10) and have put THE NEW SELF, which is BEING RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR." (Colossians 3:10 ESV)
Looking into God's Word we can begin to see what is out of place, thus being enabled to make the needed changes as we trust Him to help in the assembly. He Who created us also has the power to renew and sustain us.
Now, we may be anxious for the picture to become complete. I am always eager to help my wife complete a jigsaw puzzle when she has just a few pieces left. I'm not so eager at the beginning. The transformation of our life takes some time and so the need for patience. When will the picture of our life be fully assembled? John encouraged. . .
"(2) Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that WHEN HE APPEARS WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, because we shall see him as he is." (1 John 3:2 ESV)
God has given us glimpses of the completed picture, but He is the One Who has the whole picture in view. May we seek His guidance in getting all the pieces of our life where they belong. The end will be a masterpiece.
Have a great day TRUSTING GOD AS HE CONTINUES ASSEMBLING OUR LIFE!

Properly Channeled!
Water is powerful. It can rush and erode. It can pour down and pound crops. It can soak hillsides that slide. It can come in waves that roll in and ravish communities. However, water can be harnessed to run through dams to generate electricity, managed to meet the need for good growing crops, and channeled to benefit rather than destroy.
Just like water that can be either beneficial or destructive, so is the case with power in the hands of men. Some handle it well while others allow it to go to their head as they deal harshly with others.
Solomon stated. . .
"The KING'S HEART IS A STREAM OF WATER IN THE HAND OF THE LORD; he turns it wherever he will." (Proverbs 21:1 ESV)
The best leaders will always be those who will ALLOW GOD to direct them. God has even used worldly leaders to bring about His purposes, even without them realizing it. (i.e. Pharaoh and Artaxerxes) That is because ultimately God's Will prevails. Oh that every world leader (or anyone in any leadership position) relied on the wisdom and will of God when decisions are being made.
The second to the last verse of this chapter notes the Sovereignty of God. (Proverbs 21:30) When that is kept in mind we are most useful to the Lord for His purposes. May we allow our life to be like channeled water under God's control. Such a life will be beneficial to others and glorifying to God.
Have a great day BEING A CONDUIT FOR THE WILL OF GOD!

On The Mat! (part 6 of 6)
ON THE MAT! (part 6 of 6)
Before we leave this focus on wrestling in prayer, there is one more element we need to bear in mind.
ENDURANCE!
There is a coach in wrestling. There is also a team. However, the competition on the mat depends most on the individual performance. Though the coach trains and encourages and the team-mates shout and cheer during the match, the wrestler is out there on the mat grappling alone with the opponent. And we are not talking "tag-team" wrestling here. The wrestler's individual skills must be developed and conditioning must be maintained so as to have the ENDURANCE necessary to compete. Three 3 minute rounds may not seem like a long time unless you are the one out there on the mat. The wrestler must keep pushing. To relax gives the opponent the opportunity to gain control.
In our Christian walk, there are times we find ourselves taking a stand alone (though God is with us). There are times when we have to put everything we have into a situation to remain standing. There are times we may not be able to count on the relief or aid of other human beings. How do we stand at those times? Have we developed the ENDURANCE required to do so?
We must persevere in prayer as Paul encouraged the Thessalonian brethren: "pray continually". (I Thessalonians 5:17 NIV)
We must also persevere in the focus and study of God's Word in order to maintain the ENDURANCE necessary to keep pressing on to victory.
"(4) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that THROUGH ENDURANCE and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (5) May the GOD WHO GIVES ENDURANCE and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, (6) so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 15:4-6 NIV)
Have a great day CONDITIONED TO KEEP ON KEEPING ON!

On The Mat! (part 5 of 6)
THE "PIN"
The focus on the "PIN" as we wrestle in prayer could be stated like this: "Lord, I know that the victory is mine because you are with me. I struggle when I feel I can do it on my own. Help me keep in mind how much I need You, Your power, and Your coaching in order to gain the victory."
Some talk about fighting to the death, but we press on as Christ will ultimately destroy that last enemy.
"The last enemy to be destroyed is death." (I Corinthians 15:26 NIV)
And so we look to Christ who brings about the victory.
"(54) When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." (55) "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" (56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (I Corinthians 15:54-57 NIV)
And by faith we are numbered among those who overcome!
"(3) This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, (4) for everyone born of God OVERCOMES the world. This is the VICTORY that has OVERCOME the world, even OUR FAITH. (5) Who is it that OVERCOMES the world? Only HE WHO BELIEVES that Jesus is the Son of God." (I John 5:3-5 NIV)
Press on to PIN! Press on to WIN! As we wrestle on in faith, may we PIN the fear that keeps us from boldly proclaiming the truth. May we PIN the old self with its practices that the new self in Christ may continue to live and glorify Him. May we PIN the selfish interests that God's Will may be done in our daily lives.
Have a great day WRESTLING VICTORIOUSLY IN CHRIST!

On The Mat! (part 4 of 6)
THE "TAKE DOWN"
The "TAKE DOWN" connected to our wrestling in prayer might be expressed this way: "Lord, I seize the moment for you. I will take hold of today to serve and to glorify you. Rather than the flesh controlling I will allow your Spirit to take control. With your power I will take captive every thought and make it obedient to you."
When we ESCAPE, then we are ready for the "TAKE DOWN."
The Hebrew writer encouraged. . .
"God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who HAVE FLED to TAKE HOLD of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged." (Hebrews 6:18 NIV)
With our lives no longer under the control of the flesh, but rather under the control of the Spirit, we can TAKE HOLD of the abundant life (John 10:10) Jesus came to make possible.
Paul encouraged Timothy regarding the rich. . .
"(18) Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. (19) In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may TAKE HOLD of the life that is TRULY LIFE." (I Timothy 6:18-19 NIV)
With the help of God we can then gain control of life in a way that glorifies God and thus ultimately brings benefit to ourselves and to others whom our lives touch. To the church at Thessalonica, Paul wrote. . .
"(3) It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; (4) that each of you should LEARN TO CONTROL his own body IN A WAY THAT IS HOLY AND HONORABLE, (5) not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God;" (I Thessalonians 4:3-5 NIV)
As we wrestle with the control of our thinking, Paul pointed to the way in which we need to allow God's Word to work within us. We read. . .
"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we TAKE CAPTIVE every thought to make it obedient to Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV)
Have a great day MAINTAINING CONTROL BY THE POWER OF GOD'S SPIRIT.

On The Mat! (part 3 of 6)
THE "ESCAPE"
The wrestling in prayer regarding our "ESCAPE" may be expressed this way: "Lord, I struggle with those things and desires which try to bind and hold me back. Deliver me from temptation. Lead me in Your way. When faced with temptation, help me to see, trust, and use the way out You promise to provide."
For those familiar with wrestling, the ESCAPE logically follows the STAND UP. We don't ESCAPE by sitting. We don't escape by staying where we are. We must move away from whatever we are ESCAPING in order to break free.
Paul admonished Timothy. . .
"FLEE THE EVIL DESIRES OF YOUTH, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (2 Timothy 2:22 NIV)
Praise God He has provided the means for ESCAPE. Peter encouraged. . .
"(3) His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (4) Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and ESCAPE THE CORRUPTION IN THE WORLD CAUSED BY EVIL DESIRES." ( 2 Peter 1:3-4 NIV)
As God provides the way, we need to go for it. The longer we remain, the stronger the grip by which we will be held. As Paul encouraged. . .
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE A WAY OUT so that you can stand up under it." (I Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
The way is there. Will we choose it? Will we use it? May we continue to see, trust, and use the means of ESCAPE our Lord provides. He gave Himself for us that we might be FREE.
Have a great day ESCAPING INTO THE FREEDOM GOD PROVIDES.

On The Mat! (part 2 of 6)
THE "STAND UP"
The "STAND UP" in life may be expressed this way: "Lord, give me strength to remain firm and faithful. Help me to get up and give me the strength to stand for that which is right."
The "STAND UP" is crucial. Time in prayer is of the utmost importance. However, we are not to spend all our life down on our knees. The time comes for us to move from prayer to action. The time comes for us to STAND for, and upon, God's principles. In our prayers we may find ourselves wrestling as we acknowledge the lack of strength and courage to boldly STAND up for that which is right. But let us pray. Let us pray in faith. And then let us STAND knowing we are NOT STANDING ALONE.
We need to trust in God's provision to help us STAND.
"(10) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. (11) Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your STAND against the devil's schemes. (12) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (13) Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to STAND YOUR GROUND, and after you have done everything, to STAND. (14) STAND FIRM then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, (15) and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. (16) In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. (17) Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (18) And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." (Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV)
So what shall we do?
"Therefore, my dear brothers, STAND FIRM. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." (I Corinthians 15:58 NIV)
Remember the passage which kicked off this series referred to Epaphras wrestling in prayer for those at Colosse, that they would "...STAND FIRM IN ALL THE WILL OF GOD, mature and fully assured." (Colossians 4:12 NIV)
Have a great day STANDING ON AND FOR THE WILL OF GOD!

On The Mat! (part 1 of 6)
Yesterday we noted Paul's reference to a WRESTLER in his letter to the church at Colosse:
"Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. HE IS ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured." (Colossians 4:12 NIV)
Another aspect of the WRESTLING in prayer is that for ourselves. In what ways could we picture the continuing WRESTLING MATCH in which we are involved? Do you see yourself there on the mat in prayer? Over the next few days we will consider and mediate on this praying in the terms of WRESTLING.
THE "REVERSAL"
The "REVERSAL" in life may be expressed this way: "Lord, I repent of my sin! I turn from those things that are out of place with the Christian life and turn to follow you. Sin will no longer master me, but with your help, sin will be mastered."
Note the words of Peter:
"REPENT, then, and TURN TO GOD, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord," (Acts 3:19 NIV)
Note also God's warning to Cain:
"(6) Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? (7) If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but YOU MUST MASTER IT."" (Genesis 4:6-7 NIV)
Cain wrestled and lost. God wants us to wrestle and win!
Do you wrestle in prayer over those things you do which you don't want to do and over those things you don't do that you know you ought? In prayer we need to keep committing ourselves to REPENTANCE and the changing of those things which are out of place in our life. There needs to continue to be a reversal from being controlled by the flesh to being controlled by the Spirit of God. With His help we can gain the victory!
Have a great day MASTERING SIN THROUGH THE POWER OF CHRIST!

Wrestling!
In Paul's letter to the church at Colosse, he referred to one who was a WRESTLER.
"Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. HE IS ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured." (Colossians 4:12 NIV)
[Note: The word translated "wrestling" here in the NIV and "struggling" in the ESV which I now use, is "agonizomai". Perhaps that makes you think of our English word "agonize." According to W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, "agonizomai" was used for contending in the public games, denoted to fight or engage in conflict, was used metaphorically for contending perseveringly against opposition and temptation, to put forth every effort and specifically here in Colossians 4:12 as "to wrestle earnestly in prayer."]
Do we find ourselves WRESTLING in prayer for others? If we have a genuine concern for others this would be a picture of part of our prayer time. It is difficult to understand what keeps some from accepting the Way of God. Sometimes we struggle with what keeps others away from the fellowship of the church. After all, if there is an attachment to the HEAD (Christ) there ought to be an attachment to the BODY (the church). [Note John's association of fellowship with Christ and each other in I John 1:7.] Then there is the struggle of what to say or do to influence others. Sometimes in prayer we may WRESTLE with a sense of frustration and the temptation to even give up on some. And so the WRESTLING continues as the heart pains for the spiritual (and physical) needs of others.
A great deal depends on the heart of others. As we struggle in prayer for them, may we look to God for courage and wisdom to find a way to touch them.
Have a great day WRESTLING WITH ENDURANCE ON BEHALF OF OTHERS.
Carl
[NOTE: Tomorrow (God willing) we will begin a series of focuses on WRESTLING in prayer for ourselves.]

HELP ME DO RIGHT!
(Carl Hanson (October 28, 1988 & Nov. 1988)
[Rom. 7:21-25; 1 Cor. 10:13)
Lord Jesus I long to be perfectly whole,
But oft times self steps in the way of the goal.
Help me Lord to submit to Your will each day
That I may not drift from the Heavenly Way
(CHORUS)
Help me do right and stay in the Light
Conscious that my life is e'er in Your sight.
Lord Jesus I sin by not doing Your will.
I know what I must, but I struggle there still.
Help me have the courage to stand in your Name
That when I see You I'll not stand there in shame.
(chorus)
Lord Jesus You've loved me in spirit of my life.
I know right and wrong shall continue in strife.
In ev'ry temptation help me see the way
To escape corruption and Your will obey.

LORD GOD ALMIGHTY
(Carl Hanson, October 1988)
[Eph. 1:3; Rev. 1:5; 4:11; 11:17; 15:3-4; 19:1]
Lord God Almighty, to You we give thanks,
The one who is and who was and ever shall be,
Because You have great power with which You do reign.
Your righteous acts have been revealed for all eternity.
(CHORUS)
Praise be to You our God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
For ev'ry spiritual blessing You have blessed us with in Christ.
Lord God Almighty, we glorify Your name.
How great and marvelous are the deeds You have done,
For You created all things with being by Your will
And freed us from the guilt of sin by giving the Son.
(chorus)
Lord God Almighty, Your ways are just and true,
For You alone are holy in all that You do.
Salvation, glory, power -- They all belong to You.
We praise You for Your guidance and our strength You renew.

"Can Anything Good Come From There?"
[07/01/2011 "teEn-MAIL"]
[NOTE: This hymn was written while I was preaching a series of lessons from the Gospel of John]
"CAN ANYTHING GOOD COME FROM THERE?"
(Carl Hanson, September 14, 1988)
[John 1:36; Eph. 3:20]
There in Galilee's a town; Nazareth, of no renown.
And a question one did dare: "Can Anything Good Come From There?"
(CHORUS)
God is able -- God is able -- Oh immeasurably more He can do
Than all we may ask or imagine. Let His power work in you.
On a cruel cross of shame, Was it for this that He came?
Oh, the pain that He did bear. "Can Anything Good Come From There?"
(chorus)
There's a life for whom Christ died; It's been washed and sanctified.
Will it stand for Him anywhere? "Can Anything Good Come From There?"
(chorus)
Is your heart seeking His will? Is your faith a fire still?
Is it in unceasing prayer? "Can Anything Good Come From There?"
(chorus)
In your walk do others see Jesus' life and purity?
Do they see it's Christ you wear? "Can Anything Good Come From There?"
(chorus)
