A Battle!

Jesus has rightly been referred to as the Master Teacher. His use of parables beautifully presented pictures of God's kingdom and life lived in it. Those stories brought to light lessons that stuck in the minds of His hearers. Though Jesus' parables kept the self-blinded from seeing (note Matthew 13:10-15), for those who opened their ears and hearts to the Lord, there was (and is) the great blessing of wisdom for living.

In Paul's writing, he too used analogies to get across needed points. In his second letter to Timothy -- in one section of a few verses -- we find three descriptions of the Christian as a soldier, an athlete, and a farmer. Today we will note the first of these three and -- Lord Willing -- consider the others over the next two days.

Paul wrote. . .
"(3) Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. (4) No SOLDIER gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. (5) An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. (6) It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. (7) Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything." ( 2 Timothy 2:3-7 ESV)

A SOLDIER! Here is one who -- when dealing with a conflict -- dare not be distracted. There is the need to retain a singular focus, striving to follow the directions of the commanding officer and seeking to please him.

The devil loves to distract us from the work of God. When our Christian focus is not kept where it ought to be we get caught off guard and stumble or falter in our faith. The conflict between good and evil; truth and falsehood; the Divine plan and the devil's deceptions; all continues to rage on in life. We can be trained and equipped, but if we don't remain alert and endure through the conflict, it is all for nothing! In the strength of the Lord are we standing our ground?

Just as in an army there are various roles to be filled, all are called into ACTIVE SERVICE. For some that is out on the battle line while others may serve as support troops for the operations. Are we doing our part? We are to stand ready on ACTIVE DUTY! With the battle lines drawn between the forces of good and evil -- of God and the devil -- we must keep the singular purpose of our mission in mind. As Paul urged Timothy, may we remain GOOD SOLDIERS of Christ Jesus!

Have a great day REMAINING ON ACTIVE DUTY FOR THE LORD!
