Temptation!

In the midst of military victories for King David (2 Samuel 10 and 12) we find him experiencing personal defeat in his own life. His actions also impacted his relationship with God -- having displeased Him (2 Samuel 11:27) -- and would bring about consequences within his own family as well. (2 Samuel 12:11)

We read. . .
"(1) In the spring of the year, THE TIME WHEN KINGS GO OUT TO BATTLE, David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. BUT DAVID REMAINED AT JERUSALEM. (2) IT HAPPENED, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's house, that HE SAW from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. (3) And DAVID SENT AND INQUIRED about the woman. And one said, 'Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?' (4) So DAVID SENT messengers AND TOOK HER, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. (5) And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, "I am pregnant." (2 Samuel 11:1-5)

From there David's attempt at cover-up began, but to no avail. (2 Samuel 11:6-27) As is most often the case, sin finds us out. (Numbers 32:23) But note the progression of David's sin.

First of all, temptation is often found when we are not where we ought to be or doing what we should be doing. Had David been out with the rest of his army (11:1), perhaps this never would have happened.

Secondly, consider the fact that temptation happens. (11:2) It doesn't always have to be planned for falling into it. However, our focus should be on a plan to stay away from it or run when it is seen.

Thirdly, David saw. (11:2) Now, sometimes we can't help seeing something. Again, things just "happen". Had David simply turned away and gone back into his house, the story may have ended there. Unfortunately, too often a second look is taken.

Fourthly, David sent and inquired. (11:3) He took a closer look. As already noted, a first glance may not be avoidable, but when we choose to take the second look or a closer look, that is when we can really begin to be drawn in. That is when we are really in trouble. When one gets too close to the fire, it often ends with getting burned. There are some sins from which it is best to flee. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 6:18)

Fifthly, David took. (11:4) He coveted what belonged to another; he took another man's wife. She was not his! The kind of relationships God has in mind are those about "giving", not "taking". Many young people (and adults) in society today have this wrong and therefore misunderstand what true love is!

Though Bathsheba returned home and David remained in his house, the damage was done. David's faithfulness as a leader of God's people and to God had faltered and he had sinned. Victory over temptation begins by looking the other direction rather than toward it. When it comes to temptation, we can be our own worst enemy, because though the situation may be around us, the temptation arises from within.

In Paul's second letter to Timothy, he exhorted. . .
"(22) So FLEE YOUTHFUL PASSIONS and PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS, FAITH, LOVE, AND PEACE, along with those who CALL ON THE LORD FROM A PURE HEART." (2 Timothy 2:22 ESV)

Keeping our eyes on God and what is pleasing to Him will make a dynamic difference in our life. Therefore, let us PURSUE RIGHTEOUSNESS and all that is pleasing to the Lord as we call upon Him from a PURE HEART. With such a focus, rather than experiencing life's regrets, we will experience more and more victory over worldly desires.

Have a great day KEEPING LIFE AND FOCUS WHERE IT OUGHT TO BE!

Great Strength!

The great Italian Maestro, Arturo Toscanini, is said to have been as well-known for his ferocious temper as for his outstanding musicianship. When members of his orchestra played badly he would pick up anything in sight and hurl it to the floor. During one rehearsal a flat note caused Toscanini to grab his valuable watch and smash it beyond repair. Shortly afterward, his devoted musicians presented him with a luxurious velvet-lined box containing two watches; one a beautiful gold timepiece, the other a cheap one on which was inscribed, "For rehearsals only." [Selected. Original source unknown]

I am thankful the conductor of the orchestra of which I am a member does not have the same temperament as Toscanini. Though he challenges us with some of the music he selects, and is serious about getting things right, our conductor does so in a very encouraging way. I'm glad that even when we do make mistakes, rather than beating us, our conductor restarts us, beating his baton for us to follow.

Anger has a way of causing one to lose control. Action takes place before thought is given with often irreversible consequences. Anger over a mess has sometimes led to a greater mess to be cleaned up. What needs to be "rehearsed" is taking time to take a few deep breaths and think a moment before the anger is taken out on objects or others.

Solomon stated. . .
"(31) WHOEVER IS SLOW TO ANGER IS BETTER THAN THE MIGHTY, and HE WHO RULES HIS SPIRIT THAN HE WHO TAKES A CITY." (Proverbs 16:32 ESV)

Though in anger objects may be able to be thrown great distances or down with a mighty force, it is actually the MAINTAINING OF CONTROL that is a sign of great strength, as well as great wisdom. Having this victory over self is greater than the victory over a city. May we seek God's help in conquering self, ruling the spirit well.

Have a great day REHEARSING STRENGTH TRAINING OVER SELF!

Rags To Riches!

A man quite well off once remarked to another, "I believe strongly in hard work. I have two hundred thousand dollars and I owe it all to hard work and the hundred and ninety-eight thousand my rich uncle left me."

Don't you just love "Rags to Riches" stories; how people have been able to rise above their poverty to become well established in society? We love the stories of people, who refused to allow circumstances to hold them back or obstacles to stand in their way, and against the odds rose to achieve great success to their benefit and the benefit of others. The world generally applauds such accomplishments. However, God desires to bring about this type of success in our lives; not necessarily in physical wealth (some of us may not be able to handle that), but definitely in spiritual wealth.

Isaiah wrote. . .
"(5) You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved? (6) We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like A POLLUTED GARMENT. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. (7) There is no one who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities." (Isaiah 64:5-7 ESV)

The New King James Version reads, "FILTHY RAGS." Outside of a relationship to God, even right acts can be viewed as a "POLLUTED GARMENT" or "FILTHY RAGS". We need to come to God to receive the benefits of Christ's blood in dealing with our sins so that we can be right with Him and thus our acts acceptable to Him.

Paul pointed out. . .
"(7) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the RICHES OF HIS GRACE, (8) that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding." (Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV)

There it is! From filthy RAGS to RICHES because of the grace of God! He has provided the means to lift our lives out of the mud and the mire and place us in the realm of the inheritance of the riches of His glorious blessings. As we have moved from living for self to living for God there is a RAGS to RICHES story attached to our lives. And the heavenly host applauds.

Have a great day BEING A SUCCESS STORY BECAUSE OF CHRIST IN YOUR LIFE!

Proudly Worn?

A man, acknowledged for his great humility, was presented with a button displaying the words "Humble Award" printed in bold letters. The presentation had taken him by surprise -- after all, he was humble. The next day, he wore his "Humble" button and so they took it away from him.
That is the difficulty with humility. We need sincere compliments, but we must be careful not to let them go to our heads so as to think more highly of ourselves than we ought (Romans 12:3). We should be humble, but never proud of our humility. The reason is that the pride leaves us with a sense of accomplishment which then tends to slow or even stop the spiritual growth that ought to continue. Maintaining a humble spirit allows us to keep learning as we acknowledge we have not yet arrived at full maturity. None of us are perfect. We all have room to grow. (That's the biggest room in the world!)

Jesus was the only perfect individual to walk the face of this earth. Still, even His walk was marked by humility.

Paul described it in this way:
"(6) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, (6) who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a things to be grasped, (7) but MADE HIMSELF NOTHING, taking the form of A SERVANT, being born in the likeness of men. (8) And being found in human form, HE HUMBLED HIMSELF by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)

Paul went on to point out how Christ was then exalted. Jesus is our example even in this. It is THROUGH HUMILITY that EXALTATION COMES. However, we do not exalt ourselves.

James encouraged. . .
"(10) Humble yourselves before the Lord, and HE WILL EXALT YOU." (James 4:10 ESV)

Peter similarly exhorted. . .
"(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the might hand of God so that AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU." (1 Peter 5:6 ESV)

As we humble ourselves before God, He will bring about the growth and the usefulness in our life. May we continue in humility before Him and toward each other so that this will take place.

Have a great day IN TRUE HUMILITY!

The Answer!

While driving around town a few days ago, my attention was captured by the words on the frame around a car license plate. Across the top it said "JESUS" and across the bottom read, "That Is My Final Answer".

Who (or what) is the LORD of our life? Who (or what) is the KING ruling on the throne of our heart? Who (or what) is the MASTER whose will we are submissively serving? If the answer to those questions is not JESUS, then our focus needs to change. If we claim it is JESUS, are we set for it to remain so from this day forward? Is JESUS truly our FINAL ANSWER?

JESUS is the answer to our being separated from God, having become the means by which we are delivered from the wrath of God (Romans 5:8) and being reconciled by His death. (Romans 5:9) JESUS is the answer to gaining access to the Father. (John 14:6) JESUS is the only "name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12 ESV) And the list goes on of the significant difference JESUS makes (or can make) to our life now and for eternity. Therefore, since JESUS is the answer to fulfilling all of the above noted blessings and more -- when it comes to the LORD, KING, and MASTER of our life -- WHAT IS OUR FINAL ANSWER?

Jesus stated. . .
"(32) So EVERYONE WHO ACKNOWLEDGES ME BEFORE MEN, I ALSO WILL ACKNOWLEDGE BEFORE MY FATHER who is in heaven, (33) but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 10:32-33 ESV)

John also wrote. . .
"(23) No one who denies the Son has the Father. WHOEVER CONFESSES THE SON HAS THE FATHER ALSO." (1 John 2:23 ESV)

That all sounds fair enough, doesn't it? Why should we have an expectation of Him acknowledging us if we are not willing to acknowledge Him? In the end it matters what JESUS is and has been to us? Though some relationships may come and go, this one is to remain the abiding one! Saying "yes" to that relationship as we surrender our life to Him is to remain our FINAL ANSWER so that no other being or possession has the slightest chance of replacing Him.

When Jesus encouraged His disciples in view of persecution they would face for His name's sake, He exhorted, ". . .But the one who endures to the end will be saved." (Matthew 10:22b) Since Jesus is the "Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end" (Revelation 22:13), may our life and words reflect He is the One to Whom we have entrusted our life now and for eternity. JESUS is both able and faithful to save us.

Have a great day MAKING "THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA" OUR FIRST AND FINAL ANSWER!

Roads Traveled!

This world is full of roads that may remind of or symbolize many things. Perhaps the mention of "The Yellow Brick Road" brings to mind the exciting adventure to see the Wizard of Oz. "Abbey Road" will remind some of the Beatles. The "Burma Road" will remind a much older generation of a 717 mile long road through mountainous country in China that was built by 200,000 Chinese laborers from 1937 to 1938 and later used by the British to transport war material during World War II.

Then there are roads noted in the Scriptures. The Jericho road mentioned by Jesus in the parable of the good Samaritan might symbolize a ROAD TO SERVICE. (Luke 10:33-35) The road to Gaza where Philip met up with the Ethiopian treasurer might be noted as a ROAD TO DISCOVERY as Philip helped this man understand the one of whom Isaiah wrote was Jesus, the Messiah. (Acts 8:26-39) The road to Damascus on which Paul saw the light could be called the ROAD TO CONVERSION for him; Paul becoming himself what he had been on the way to persecute. (Acts 9:1-8, 17-18) Then there was the road to Emmaus on which Jesus walked with two disciples who were pondering the Lord's death, burial, and the report of an empty tomb. (Luke 24:13-35) Perhaps that road could be called the ROAD FROM SORROWING TO SEEING.

What makes roads significant and memorable is WHAT OCCURS ON THEM and to WHERE THEY LEAD. What road are we traveling? Is it a well-traveled highway or faint path less traveled? What is occurring along the way? Where is it ultimately leading?

Jesus exhorted. . .
"(13) ENTER BY THE NARROW GATE. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For THE GATE IS NARROW AND THE WAY IS HARD THAT LEADS TO LIFE, and those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)

Jesus implied the choice boils down to two ways leading opposing directions. One road leads to disappointment and death while the other to hope and Heaven. Though the road on which we would follow the Lord may be hard at times, it will be worth the challenges since it is the one LEADING TO LIFE!

Let us recognize "where the good way is; and walk in it." (Jeremiah 6:16 ESV) Though it may not be the well worn path of the many, keeping our eyes on Jesus Who is "THE WAY" (John 14:6), we will not get lost.

Have a great day FOLLOWING OUR KING'S HIGHWAY!

The Core!

When we talk about the "core" of something, we are referring to its central or most important part. It is the center. It is what all else revolves around or is connected to. It is the aspect especial to its purpose.

What is at the core of the Gospel (Good News) message? Is it the birth of Jesus? That was "good news of great joy" (Luke 2:10-11) and is significant as the fulfillment of how the Messiah was to come into the world. (Isaiah 9:6; Luke 2:11)

Is it the Lord's teachings He shared and the healings provided that are the core of the Gospel message? All of that was significant in revealing the truth of God (John 18:37) and being a clear sign that Jesus was the One from above. (John 10:38) It certainly was good to those who received its blessing.

Is it our Lord's ascension into Heaven. That also is significant as Jesus has gone on to prepare a place for us (John 14:2-3) and will someday return in like manner (Acts 1:11) with the redeemed being caught up together to be with Him forever. (1 Thessalonians 4:17) Oh, that will be very good!

All of those aspects of Jesus are significant and contribute to our faith and the boldness in which we might live. However, in association with His CENTRAL MISSION "to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10), the core of the Gospel is linked to that which happened during a three day period.

Paul noted it this way:
"(1) Now I would remind you, brothers, of THE GOSPEL I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, (2) and BY WHICH YOU ARE BEING SAVED, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you -- unless you believed in vain. (3) For I delivered to you AS OF FIRST IMPORTANCE what I also received: that CHRIST DIED for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, (4) that HE WAS BURIED, that HE WAS RAISED ON THE THIRD DAY in accordance with the Scriptures," (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 ESV)

Paul then went on to note the many eye witnesses to Jesus having been raised from the dead. It is our Lord's DEATH, BURIAL, and RESURRECTION that are at the core of the Gospel message. That is what Paul noted as being "OF FIRST IMPORTANCE." Our being cleansed of our sins and our soul's salvation rest on that having taken place, with His resurrection assuring us of our own. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23) That is why at the center of Paul's preaching was "Jesus Christ and him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2) May we recognize how good that news truly is!

Have a great day ETERNALLY THANKFUL FOR THE BLESSING OF THE CRUCIFIED AND RISEN CHRIST!

Hope!

"Hope" is defined as a confident desire, likelihood of success, a wish or desire, and archaically used to denote trust. [source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation.] It is easy to see from these varied definitions, hope can be associated with different levels of focus. It is therefore possible to have desires we acknowledge may not all come about. However, without a sense of hope regarding life in general, with what would we be left? Depression? Despair? Lack of motivation to press on thinking what's the use?

It has been stated, "What oxygen is to the lungs, such is hope to the meaning of life." [Emil Brunner, via calendar quote]

There are life situations that can seem to knock the breath out of us; making it difficult to press on. When hope is lost people are often left wondering WHAT TO DO OR SAY. When Jesus walked on the road to Emmaus with two disciples (who did not recognize Him) who did not know what to make of the Lord's crucifixion, they stated. . .

"But WE HAD HOPED THAT HE WAS THE ONE to redeem Israel, Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened." (Luke 24:21 ESV)

The Greek word "hope" in this passage is the verb "elpizo" which means to anticipate, expect, or hope for. Up until the cross, the expectation of these two and many others was that Jesus would establish His kingdom. They had come to focus on Jesus as "the hope of Israel." (Acts 28:20) Acknowledging Jesus had been laid in the tomb, those hopes seemed dashed. What were they to do? When these two eventually realized it was Jesus who had been walking and talking with them, they rushed off to tell the other disciples that "The Lord has risen indeed." (Luke 24:34) Though the day had been drawing to a close (Luke 24:29), having the BREATH OF HOPE BREATHED BACK INTO THEM, they were energized to rush off the same hour of the night. (Luke 24:33)

Writing to the church at Thessalonica, Paul stated. . .
"(16) Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loves us and GAVE US ETERNAL COMFORT AND GOOD HOPE THROUGH GRACE, (17) comfort your hearts and ESTABLISH THEM IN EVERY GOOD WORK AND WORD." (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 ESV)

We have a "LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3); a hope set on the "LIVING GOD." (1 Tim. 4:10) We can be certain of that "HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began." (Titus 1:2) The hope we have in Christ is the hope in which we can trust. It is not archaic hope. This hope is just as fresh as when Jesus gave Himself up for us. May we allow that LIVING HOPE to BREATHE LIFE into our ACTIONS and SPEECH to the glory of God.

Have a great day BREATHING EASIER BECAUSE OF THE ETERNAL HOPE THAT IS OURS!

Life's Focus!

Among the handy features and required parts of a car is the "rearview mirror." Some vehicles now also come equipped with backup video view; a feature currently being discussed as becoming mandatory in our country on new vehicles. (This discussion has taken place due to the number of children who have been accidentally backed over.) Having a view toward the rear is helpful for backing up, but also when driving to periodically check for what may be coming up from behind. What would happen if all driving was done with a view in the "rearview mirror"? We would most likely soon run off the side of the road or crash into stopped vehicles ahead of us. A GLANCE into the "rearview mirror" is helpful, but the MAIN FOCUS needs to be AHEAD; toward the direction we are moving. Even looking off to the side for very long can created a hazard. This is why my wife will sometimes say, "I'll look. You drive."

Perhaps there are some who are going through life like driving a car focused in the "rearview mirror." What is the impact such a focus can have? Certainly we can learn from the past and can be encouraged by some of it and so it is not to be completely ignored. However, it is possible for one to fix the focus on the successes of the past and do nothing now or to focus on the failings of the past with such regret they chain themselves to the past and become unable to press on. Though Paul acknowledged himself as the worst or "foremost of sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15-16 ESV) with regard to his past, he did not allow that to make him feel he was beyond hope. He had come to know the power and adequacy of God's grace and encouraged others to do the same.

By the time Paul wrote his letter to the church at Philippi, he had made three missionary journeys, impacted the lives of many individuals and churches, and had exemplified steadfast faith in Jesus as he unwaveringly preached the truth of salvation in Him. However -- even as a prisoner -- he did not rest with a focus in the "rearview mirror", but continued to FOCUS FORWARD.

In his letter from prison to those at Philippi, Paul wrote. . .
"(13) Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: FORGETTING WHAT LIES BEHIND AND STRAINING FORWARD TO WHAT LIES AHEAD, (14) I PRESS ON toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14 ESV)

We too, have not yet arrived! There is still growing for us to do. As long as we have life there is still work we can do to the glory of God. This FORWARD FOCUS of Paul is what compelled him to seek to always honor Christ in his body "whether by life or by death" (Philippians 1:20) as he acknowledged "to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21) His focus on living and dying were both centered on the Lord. (Romans 14:7-8)

Perhaps we'll reach a time when the flesh creates some limitations in what we are able to do. However, even then our faith and life can still impact the lives of others in a forward manner. Right now -- looking back quite a number of years -- I am remembering an elder brother in Christ who continued to offer me great encouragement and the wisdom he had gained in ministry, as he lay in a hospital bed. Even in the hospital he did not cease to remain a servant of God. May we all keep our MAIN FOCUS on the goal, "straining forward to what lies ahead" as we allow God to use us in ways to His glory and praise.

Have a great day PRESSING ON WITH A FORWARD FOCUS IN CHRIST!

Wall Torn Down!

Yesterday we considered the idea of building bridges rather than burning them. Bridges make it possible to cross that which would otherwise divide and separate. WALLS present another picture of division and separation. Just prior to the end of my younger brother's first tour of duty in Germany in 1989, the Berlin WALL between East and West was coming down. I have a small piece of that WALL taken from near the Brandenburg Gate. It is a significant piece of history; a wonderful reminder of the end of a separation and the beginning of unity.

However, there is a WALL of even greater significance and a unity Jesus' work has made possible. Paul referred to this WALL in his letter to the church in Ephesus.

"(14) For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and HAS BROKEN DOWN in his flesh the DIVIDING WALL of hostility (15) by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself ONE NEW MAN IN PLACE OF THE TWO, so making peace, (16) and might RECONCILE US BOTH TO GOD IN ONE BODY through the cross thereby killing the hostility." (Ephesians 2:14-16 ESV)

The main distinction of mankind had been made between Jew and Gentile. Jesus, through His death on the cross, destroyed the WALL of separation to bring about unity in Himself. Salvation is through Him. Peace is experienced with Him. Unity is found in Him. May we focus on Christ and live for Him in such a way as to keep that WALL down.

Have a great day IN UNITED PEACE IN CHRIST!

Those Bridges!

Some people go through life only focused on what they want to accomplish and what will get them to their goal. They pursue life without much THOUGHT as to how it may AFFECT OTHERS, just as long as they make it themselves. Sometimes such an approach to life is marked by the leaving of burning bridges behind. Perhaps that is why so many find it lonely at the top. The real danger with burning BRIDGES is this: What happens if one needs to back-track? Someone has said: "The bridge you burn now may be the one you later have to cross."

It is a whole lot easier to leave a BRIDGE than to have to rebuild one. If we are going the right direction, shouldn't we want to leave the BRIDGE for others to cross as well? But in case we have to back-track -- because we realize we have gone the wrong way -- it may be just as important to leave that BRIDGE. Maybe that BRIDGE even needs to be there for someone to catch up to us and pull us back in the right direction.

Are we always MINDFUL of the IMPACT our lives have ON OTHERS as we pursue our goals and press on in life? Do we live in such a way we can humble ourselves if we need to back-track? Do we live in such a way that others know we desire to aid them, so when we have a need they are also ready to offer us a helping hand?

Paul encouraged. . .
"(3) Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but IN HUMILITY COUNT OTHERS MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN YOURSELVES. (4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3-4 ESV)

Yes, we have our interests. Self is not to be completely forgotten. However, our interests are not the only interests since God's interests are on those around us as well.

In his letter to the church at Rome, Paul exhorted. . .
"(17) Repay no one evil for evil, but GIVE THOUGHT TO DO WHAT IS HONORABLE IN THE SIGHT OF ALL. (18) If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all." (Romans 12:17-18 ESV)

So, what kind of BRIDGE worker are you? Are you the pyrotechnician who blows them up or the architect who builds them? Rather than burning BRIDGES, let's consider the importance of building them as we continue to move in the direction God desires.

Have a great day BUILDING BRIDGES to God's glory!

Keeping Clean!

There was a time when people read their Bible daily and bathed only once a week. Today there are many who bathe daily while only reading their Bible once a week -- if at all -- on a regular basis. Though it has been said that "cleanliness is next to godliness" (which, by the way, is not a statement taken directly from the Scriptures), it is our connection to God through Christ that brings the true cleanliness associated with GODLY LIVING. Though soap and water aid in sanitary living, God has provided the means for spiritual cleanliness that is far more important because rather than warding off physical disease, His cleansing relates to the heart, mind, and soul and is of eternal consequence.

Repenting and being baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38) and having put him on in this way (Galatians 3:27), we have come into a sanctified relationship with Him. Cleansing continues through our abiding fellowship with Him which maintains our contact with His cleansing blood. (1 John 1:7) In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus he noted how we -- as the church -- have been cleansed "by the WASHING OF WATER WITH THE WORD." (Ephesians 5:26 ESV) Both "water" and "the word" were mentioned by Paul.

As Jesus told His disciples a parable relative to remaining connected to Him and therefore being able to live fruitful lives (John 15:1-11), He stated. . .

"(13) Already YOU ARE CLEAN BECAUSE OF THE WORD THAT I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU. (4) ABIDE IN ME, and I IN YOU. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (5) I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:3-5 ESV)

Cleaned (pruned) branches bear more fruit. Clean lives set better examples and glorify God through the living out of His purposes. Continuing to daily read God's Word will aid in keeping heart and mind focused where they should be so as to weed out the thoughts that are impure and direct the life toward continual HOLY LIVING. Daily Bread!

I love bread. A number of years ago, when we purchased a bread machine, we had fresh bread just about every day and my waistline proved it. I love bread! Though it has been a while since we have used the bread machine -- and I have drastically cut down on the amount of bread I eat -- I still would have difficulty refraining completely. I love bread!! If the smell of fresh bread is floating in the air, it has my attention. I love bread!!! I don't even have to have anything on it. Just give me the bread!!!!

Even in Jesus' model prayer, He validated the acknowledgment of the need for "daily bread." (Matthew 6:11) It is worthy of inclusion in prayer. The physical does count for something.

Now, let me ask you: "Do you know what I love?" Yes, I love bread! But the real question is: "Is bread enough?" Of course I eat more than just bread because my body needs the nutrients other foods such as fruit, vegetables, dairy, and meat provide. Without a well-rounded diet I could be just that -- round -- but not healthy. Still, we must understand Jesus also acknowledged the need for something other than bread.

When Jesus was in the wilderness prior to the beginning of His public ministry, He had been fasting there 40 days and nights. (Matthew 4:1) For the Scriptures to have noted that He was hungry (Matthew 4:2) would perhaps be an understatement. "Famished" or "starving" are words that might seem more appropriate. Still, in response to the devil's first temptation we read the following response.

"(4) But he answered, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT COMES FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" " (Matthew 4:4 ESV)

This focus was nothing new. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3. We need more than bread!

In the midst of Job's suffering, he noted his view toward God as he stated. . .
"(12) I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I HAVE TREASURED THE WORDS OF HIS MOUTH MORE THAN MY PORTION OF FOOD." (Job 23:12 ESV)

The New International Versions reads, "more than my daily bread." Job had a LOVE FOR GOD AND HIS WILL. The words of God were more important and more valuable to him than food for the body. Job acknowledged the need for his soul being nourished as of more worth than his physical body.
Do we share the perspective of Job and our Lord? Is there a sense in which GOD'S WORD can be noted as our "daily bread"; daily nourishing our lives so as to walk in good spiritual health? Feeding the body alone is not enough. Most of us are very well fed physically. Perhaps we even understand we have often overindulged. What marks our desire toward the spiritual nourishment we need?

More than bread, I love GOD'S WORD. It is open before me more often than the bread I love to eat. I do read it daily. It is spiritual "daily bread" that truly nourishes my soul. Though attempts have been made through the centuries to destroy the SCRIPTURES and keep them out of the hands of people, God has providentially preserved them for our benefit. May we all partake daily of this blessing He has provided.

Have a great day FEASTING WITH ETERNAL LIFE IN MIND!

Perspective And Receptiveness!

It is important to consider our perspective and receptiveness in life. Our perspective -- where our focus is most fixed -- will have a dynamic impact on how we go about daily living and what we do. Our receptiveness to the Will of God and toward the lives of others will do the same.

It has been expressed, "A pessimist, they say, sees a glass of water as being half empty; an optimist sees the same glass as half full. But a giving person sees a glass of water and starts looking for someone who might be thirsty." [G. Thomas Gale]

Perhaps there are times when life is over-analyzed when simple SERVICE TO OTHERS is the need. Maintaining a proper life perspective and receptivity to the needs of others will compel a willing spirit of service in practical ways.

Jesus stated. . .
"(40) Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. (41) The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. (42) And whoever gives one of these little ones EVEN A CUP OF COLD WATER because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward." (Matthew 10:40-42 ESV)

Our responses in life say something about our view toward the Lord. And even the giving of a drink of cold water has its reward. Recognizing the thirst of the seeming insignificant (perhaps the view of the undiscerning toward "little ones") and providing for that need is significant as it catches the eye of Heaven. Such was the perspective the Lord drew attention to in view of the widow's contribution. (Luke 21:1-4) What is given that meets a need is never too small! Even basic hospitality counts to God! May we keep our eyes open for the "thirsty" souls around us, maintaining a WILLINGNESS TO SHARE according to the need.

Have a great day LOOKING TO SERVE!

So Blessed!

I recently had the opportunity to be one of five individuals to speak at a volunteer luncheon put on by our local hospital, to share what the experience of volunteering has meant to me. As I began my sharing -- being known as a preacher -- I shared a passage I felt related in a broader sense to not just the GIVING of money, but the GIVING of ourselves on behalf of others as well. As Paul was giving his farewell address to the Ephesian elders, he said. . .

"(35) In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'IT IS MORE BLESSED TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE.'" (Acts 20:35 ESV)

GIVING can take on many different forms: our time, money or other resources, counsel, encouragement, etc. Some have the means and the time to give, but begrudge being asked. Others find great joy in the GIVING in ways that may be simple, yet dynamically impact the lives of others.

"...MORE BLESSED TO GIVE than to receive." Have we all experienced that blessing in one form or another? Still, in the process we do receive much. We can receive great joy in knowing we have made a difference for another. The "Thank you" we hear gives us the satisfaction of knowing our service was appreciated. However, Jesus Himself declared that by GIVING and not expecting to receive back, we do have a reward from above. (note Matthew 6:6; 25:34-40)

Accepting the opportunities to connect with others to meet not only spiritual needs, but physical ones as well, is where the proverbial rubber meets the road in life. We may never really know the full impact we have made through some encounters, but often merely the gift of our presence -- especially during challenging times -- can be a powerful thing.

Someone has said, "Being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful." [source: unknown] May we be like Jesus who "went about doing good" (Acts 10:38) as we live selfless lives to the glory of God. Our GIVING in whatever manner it takes can become cause for "overflowing in many thanksgivings to God." (2 Corinthians 9:12) Making a compassionate human connection can potentially do more than merely meet a physical need as the heart may become more open to receiving the message of Jesus that relates to life beyond this realm.

Have a great day FEELING GOOD ABOUT DOING THE GOOD OF GOD FOR THE GOOD OF OTHERS!

One Of A Kind!

When there is something of value, it always seems someone tries to come up with a copycat product; pirated movies and computer software, fake Rolex watches, knock-off brands bearing the label but perhaps made of much cheaper materials, and even counterfeit money. When it comes to replicas or look-a-likes (counterfeits and fakes), it may not always be easy to tell the difference, but the true value is in the REAL THING!

In the first chapter of John's Gospel -- as he was introducing the Messiah -- we read. . .
"(14) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of THE ONLY SON FROM THE FATHER, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14 ESV)

The New International Version reads, " the glory of THE ONE AND ONLY" and the New Living Translations reads, "the glory of the Father's ONE AND ONLY SON."

The Greek word translated "only Son" [or "only begotten"] is "monogenes" which means "single of its kind, only", and when "used of Christ, denotes the only begotten son of God." [source: Strong's Lexicon] This Greek word is a combining of "monos" ("alone" or "solitary" and is translated "only") and "genes" ("offspring"). According to Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament words, this Greek word is only used 5 times in the Scriptures and only by the Apostle John. John appears to have attempted to make it abundantly clear how Jesus stood alone as ONE OF A KIND!

Jesus warned the disciples that there would be "false christs" who would arise and lead astray. (Matthew 24:24; Mark 13:22) These counterfeit messiahs would "perform signs and wonders" so as to appear like the real thing and therefore it was needful to remain on guard against the deception.

There is only ONE LORD! (Ephesians 4:5) We have only ONE SAVIOR. Our Lord Jesus Christ is ONE OF A KIND! May we keep our focus on Him and His Will so that we are not led astray by the counterfeits. Since He remains our ONLY ACCESS to the Father (John 14:6), let us love and fully surrender our life to JESUS CHRIST Who is and ever will be the REAL THING!

Have a great day WITH THE LIFE ENTRUSTED TO THE ONE AND ONLY!

I Was Made For This!

We might think of a lot of purposes for which we have been given life. Most of the things which may come to mind are glorious purposes. We may consider being made to praise and glorify God. We may think of being made to serve God. We may acknowledge our purpose of seeking and saving the lost by means of sharing the Gospel of Jesus. And the list can go on. However, consider an ultimate purpose noted by Paul for which we have been made.

Paul addressed the ultimate purpose for which we were made in this way:
"(1) For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. (2) For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, (3) if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. (4) For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened -- not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. (5) HE who HAS PREPARED US FOR THIS VERY THING is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee." (2 Corinthians 5:1-5 ESV)

God's purpose for us is that we LIVE! We were made to LIVE! Jesus came that we could LIVE to the full! (John 10:10) And in Him we are assured of LIVING eternally.

We were made for the purpose of being changed; having the mortal "swallowed up by life." We were made to be mortal (temporary) on earth, yet created to be changed to LIVE eternally in Heaven. God's intent was not for us to be left here, but rather to be with Him forever! We were made to someday possess eternal life! We were made to become eternal beings with God! Yes, we were made "FOR THIS VERY THING"! May we yield completely to God's good and everlasting purpose for our life!

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY WHAT YOU WERE MADE FOR!

Made . . . For What?

In Genesis, the description of the creation of man is described in this way:
"then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and THE MAN BECAME A LIVING CREATURE." (Genesis 2:7 ESV)

The KJV reads: "and man became a LIVING SOUL." The Hebrew word refers to "soul", "self", "life", "creature", and "person" in the sense of a "living being." [source: Strong's Lexicon]

In contrast to the earth itself, God made man a living being or living soul. He is the Creator and Sustainer of life. We ought to thank Him for it.

We note the psalmist's acknowledgement of his Creator where he wrote. . .

"I praise you, for I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE. Wonderful are your works; MY SOUL KNOWS IT VERY WELL." (Psalm 139:14 ESV)

Yes, and how wonderful! WE ARE NOT ACCIDENTS! We were MADE ON PURPOSE and created WITH A WONDERFUL PURPOSE. But what is that purpose? Many valid and even God glorifying purposes may come to mind. Go ahead and consider some of the purposes that come to mind and Lord willing tomorrow we will consider an ultimate purpose for which we were made.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING HAVING BEEN PURPOSELY MADE!

Prayer's Answer!

Some people go through the challenges of life thinking they don't have a prayer. However, we do, because Jesus came and not only gave Himself on the cross for our sins, He also prayed for us as well. Prior to our Lord's arrest and crucifixion, as He began His prayer on behalf of the disciples, He also included those who would eventually believe in Him through their testimony. (John 17:20) Through the perpetuation of that testimony we have become believers as well. Yes, Jesus came to earth and offered up Himself with our eternal life in mind.

In our Lord's prayer He stated. . .
"(3) And THIS IS ETERNAL LIFE, that they KNOW YOU THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST whom you have sent." (John 17:3 ESV)

TO KNOW! This is not merely knowing in an intellectual manner such as knowing about God; the Scriptural truths relative to His essence and existence. The word translated "know" is from the Greek word "ginowsko", a word also used in the Greek for an INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP. In the context of this verse we should recognize the need for a close, ABIDING RELATIONSHIP with God and the Lord Jesus Christ such as would draw us to find out what pleases God and then strive to carry it out in our life.

There are many who may acknowledge God and may even use His Name, but is there a GENUINE RELATIONSHIP? Is the life lived truly connected to Him and His Will? This important RELATIONSHIP is one that begins in this realm and goes on into eternity. To know Him in the sense of Jesus' prayer is to walk in an ABIDING RELATIONSHIP with Him. In that RELATIONSHIP we are to seek not the glory of mankind but "the glory that comes from the only true God." (John 5:44)

In John's first of three letters he later wrote that Jesus "IS THE TRUE GOD AND ETERNAL LIFE." (1 John 5:20 ESV) This implies the oneness of the Father and the Son and the realm -- BEING IN HIM -- wherein eternal life is gained. Knowing the Father and Jesus in a RELATIONAL way is the answer to the prayer relative to our eternal salvation. May the RELATIONSHIP be cherished as the eternal gift it is!

Have a great day WALKING IN HIM!

Here Is Water! (part 2 of 2)

Water. A life NECESSITY! Something that can bring JOY to life! That which can also bring a sense of CALM and REFRESHMENT! Not only is this true physically, but even more so spiritually. As we noted yesterday God's Divine power associated with water, that association goes further spiritually as well.

When an Ethiopian treasurer was reading from the prophet Isaiah as he traveled in his chariot from Jerusalem back to Ethiopia, Philip was sent to connect with him. (Acts 8:26-29) Philip explained to this man how the passage in Isaiah pointed toward Jesus, the Messiah, and shared the "good news about Jesus." (Acts 8:35)

Then we read. . .
"(36) And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, "SEE, HERE IS WATER! WHAT PREVENTS ME FROM BEING BAPTIZED?" (38) And he commanded the chariot to stop, and THEY BOTH WENT DOWN INTO THE WATER, Philip and the eunuch, AND HE BAPTIZED HIM. (39) And when THEY CAME UP OUT OF THE WATER, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and THE EUNUCH saw him no more, and WENT ON HIS WAY REJOICING." (Acts 8:36-39 ESV)

Here was a new beginning for this believer. Not that there was power in the water itself, but associated with the power of God through the blood of Jesus Christ, this man was united with Christ in the likeness of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4) Having been baptized into Christ, he had put Him on. (Galatians 3:27)

Whether we focus on God's power associated with water in a physical or spiritual sense, His power is amazing! God is the great SEPARATER! He is the great RESTORER! He is the great CALMER! He is the great SAVIOR! All of this is experienced as we come into a right relationship with Him. Being united with Christ in baptism we are separated from our sins (Romans 6:1-2) and the penalty due us. In Christ we are delivered from the wrath of God as well. (Romans 5:9) We are also RESTORED into a right relationship with God where we can experience the CALMING peace that comes from knowing we are saved. Oh, how REFRESHING a blessing this is to our soul.

Though the power comes from God, water is still a NECESSITY for even our spiritual life. (Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:21) Being willing to submit as the Ethiopian treasurer, may we not be hindered or prevented! JOY now and for eternity will be the result. Praise God for such a provision in Christ, even in connection with water.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE WATER IN GOD'S PLAN!

Here Is Water! (part 1 of 2)

Water. I love it. Without it life could not exist and therefore we ought to be thankful for the water God has provided for us to drink. However, not only is water a NECESSITY, it also can bring JOY to life. I love to swim in it and to kayak on it. I also find a sense of CALM in the sound of water running over the rocks of a small stream or the waves lapping at the shore. There is also the REFRESHMENT of air and the watering of the landscape when God's rains fall to earth to bless not only the just, but the unjust as well. (Matthew 5:45) May everyone remember Who to thank!

God has a history of Divine power associated with water. As God created this world in which we live, He separated the waters above from the waters below, providing an atmosphere in which we can survive. (Genesis 1:6-7) God exercised His power over water to bring judgment on the world during the days of Noah while at the same time bringing salvation to Noah and his family and sparing the creatures in the ark with him. (Genesis 6-8; 1 Peter 3:20) During the exodus from Egyptian bondage, Israel faced water of which God's power was exercised to provide passage through it on dry land (Exodus 14:21-22) and so were saved when the waters came back on the Egyptians pursuing them. (Exodus 14:26-29) During the days of Elisha, Naaman was restored from his leprous condition by obediently dipping seven times in the Jordan. (2 Kings 5:14) Our Lord's first miracle performed at Cana in Galilee was that of changing the physical properties of water into wine. (John 2:9) Jesus also defied gravity by walking on water (Matthew 14:25) and exercised power over stormy seas by calming them (Matthew 8:26); all again displaying Divine power associated with water.

When Jesus talked with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well, she knew the NECESSITY of water and was at the well even during the heat of the day (John 4:6) to draw some. In that well was water that had quenched the thirst of many generations. However, Jesus spoke of WATER HE HAD that was more satisfying than what could be drawn from that well. (John 4:10-14)

The woman responded. . .
"(15) The woman said to him, 'Sir, GIVE ME THIS WATER, so that I will NOT BE THIRSTY OR HAVE TO COME HERE TO DRAW WATER.' " (John 4:15 ESV)

It is obvious from her words that her focus was still on physical water to quench the thirst; water which had to be drawn from the well and carried back home. Ultimately her focus shifted from the physical to the spiritual and she "LEFT HER WATER JAR" behind (John 4:28), returned to the city, and the attention of others was gained so as to cause them to go out to see Jesus and believe as well. (John 4:39-42)

Here was water of a well that provided opportunity to meet and share a lesson of greater significance than mere water to drink. The power of God worked through the encounter that day and many lives were changed! May we be careful to not get so caught up in the physical that we miss the greater blessings God has in store for us. Believing, we too can be REFRESHED by that which wells up to eternal life. (John 4:14) Let us drink.

Have a great day REFRESHED BY WHAT GOD PROVIDES!

Real Estate! (part 2 of 2)

As our goals are set in life, we must continually be careful with where our focus rests. What is it we most desire and are working to gain? Do we desire to enlarge our borders and increase our investment portfolios? It is the off centered focus which causes some to tear down their barns to build bigger ones (Luke 12:18), thinking they have arrived or that it is in the possession of worldly goods they have a secure future.

Israel left Egypt to head toward a land of great blessing. (Deuteronomy 6:10-11; Joshua 24:13) It was an inheritance they looked forward to. When they got there, had they truly arrived? Though the blessings were substantial, was it all God really had in mind for them? Or was their focus limited to only the physical aspects of life? Perhaps if Israel had kept the focus on their spiritual relationship with God, even the physical blessings would have lasted longer.

Due to a focus which centered too much on worldly perspectives, when the long awaited Messiah -- Jesus Christ -- came onto life's scene, He was rejected. Had the rulers of that age truly understood, "they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." (1 Corinthians 2:8) The concern of many of the leaders was revealed in a statement made in view of Jesus' growing popularity following his raising of Lazarus from the dead.

We read. . .
"(47) So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the Council and said, 'What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. (48) If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and THE ROMANS WILL COME AND TAKE AWAY BOTH OUR PLACE AND OUR NATION.'" (John 11:47-48 ESV)

Oh, if their focus had only been on the TRUE KINGDOM Jesus came to establish and the REAL estate He desired to provide. Even today a struggle continues for worldly real estate in that region of the world. The REALITY is the borders of our LORD'S KINGDOM encompass Heaven and earth as both realms are united in Him. (Ephesians 1:10)

Encouraging Christians with a Jewish background as they were going through severe persecution, the Hebrew writer encouraged that the PROMISE OF A REST REMAINED. (Hebrews 4:1 & 8-9) Later in listing many heroes of faith, the writer of Hebrews noted that Abraham's focus -- while living in the land promised to his offspring -- was on a "city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God." (Hebrews 11:10)

Abraham's focus and that of others was "that they were strangers and exiles on earth." (Hebrews 11:13) Earth was not their homeland. (Hebrews 11:14) Their focus was described as being centered as follows:

"But as it is, THEY DESIRE A BETTER COUNTRY, that is, A HEAVENLY ONE. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, FOR HE HAS PREAPARED FOR THEM A CITY." (Hebrews 11:16)

Jesus assured His disciples that in His Father's house were many mansions and He was going there to prepare a place for them. (John 14:2-3) Any real estate here is only temporary. May we "strive to enter that rest" (Hebrews 4:11) that is yet to come. Focusing on "A BETTER COUNTRY" that in essence is "A HEAVENLY ONE" and acknowledging the eternal place our Lord has gone to prepare for us; that is REAL estate planning that provides the security on which we can truly count.

Have a great day FOCUSED TOWARD THE REAL ESTATE THAT IS REAL!

Real Estate! (part 1 of 2)

"Real estate" is defined as "immovable property: land including all the property on it that cannot be moved and any attached rights." [source: Encarta ® World English dictionary © & (P) 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation] How much "real estate" one owns in this world has often been used to define a person's success. Contrary to our Lord's definition, the world often values individuals based on the size of their estate; all they own. When someone approached Jesus about arbitrating the dividing of an inheritance (Luke 12:13-14) -- and prior to going on to tell the parable of the rich farmer (Luke 12:16-21) -- Jesus stated what all need to take to heart.

We read. . .
"(15) And he said to them, 'Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ONE'S LIFE DOES NOT CONSIST IN THE ABUNDANCE OF HIS POSSESSIONS.' " (Luke 12:15 ESV)

It was not just a message for the one who came to Jesus, but for all in His hearing that day. It continues to be the needed warning for us all even now. As goals are set for the future, what we place the most emphasis on will make a dynamic difference between our attachment to this world or our value of that which is to come. Some become as "immovable" as the property they own instead of recognizing we are on a journey leading to the stability of an eternal life. Rather than having control over the property many become a slave to it -- tending it, protecting it, worrying about it, coming up with the taxes for it, etc. -- and in the process losing some of the joy of the possession.

What marks the SUBSTANCE of our life? Is it mere stuff or is it the SACRED? Is it things that will perish or that which is IMPERISHABLE? Is it gold or is it GODLINESS? Is it relative only to this earthly realm or does it relate to the eternal realm of the heavenly kingdom? To be rich in this world's goods while not being rich toward God (Luke 12:21) is to stand to lose it all!

All the tangible possessions of this world will someday be left behind for someone else. Therefore, let us retain our focus toward the estate being prepared for us that is REAL and lasting. (Lord Willing we will consider that further tomorrow.) While continuing our life in this realm may we be good stewards of what has been placed in our hands, being "rich in good works" (1 Timothy 6:18) by using it in service to others and to the glory to God.

Have a great day SEEKING THE ABUNDANCE OF SPIRITUAL THINGS!

One Way!

And finally, again: "When we reject God's commands, what we are actually declaring is WE THINK WE HAVE A BETTER IDEA THAN GOD!"

Going the wrong way on a "ONE WAY" street can get us killed! Yet we live in a world that often proclaims there are no absolutes. Many claim what is right for one is not necessarily right for another. There is also the claim we cannot impose our morals (values) on another. We may even be accused of being narrow minded as we take a stand for the truth. However, is there ANYTHING DEFINITIVE? Is there A WAY ABOVE ALL OTHER WAYS?

Jesus emphatically and unapologetically declared. . .
"(6) Jesus said to him, 'I AM THE WAY, and the truth, and the life. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME.' "(John 14:6 ESV)

If it is "NO ONE", who is exempt? If it is "EXCEPT THROUGH ME", what other way is there? Is that narrow? Is it the truth? To be absolutely true, anything contrary to it would be absolutely false!

I have a quote posted in my office which reads: "There is a difference between an open mind and a hole in the head." Openness means being honest about the truth, not being open to the acceptance of any and every idea, regardless of how many other people might be accepting.

Jesus is THE WAY! He is THE WAY of truth! He is THE WAY of life! He is THE WAY to the Father! Jesus is IT! There is no reason to get lost! Let's accept and follow Him!

Have a great day KNOWING THE WAY!

"My Way?"

And yet, again as we have noted: "When we reject God's commands, what we are actually declaring is WE THINK WE HAVE A BETTER IDEA THAN GOD!"

Frank Sinatra sang, "I'll do it my way." Does that seem to be what characterizes the lives of many today? Though having it "MY WAY" might be fine when ordering at Burger King it is not the wise approach to life.

God, speaking through His prophet Isaiah, urged. . .
"(7) let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him RETURN TO THE LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (8) FOR MY THOUGHTS ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, NEITHER ARE YOUR WAYS MY WAYS, DECLARES THE LORD. (9) For AS THE HEAVENS ARE HIGHER THAN THE EARTH, SO ARE MY WAYS HIGHER THAN YOUR WAYS AND MY THOUGHTS THAN YOUR THOUGHTS. (10) For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, (11) so shall MY WORD be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but IT SHALL ACCOMPLISH THAT WHICH I PURPOSE, AND SHALL SUCCEED IN THE THING FOR WHICH I SENT IT." (Isaiah 55:7-11 ESV)

I can look back over many times in my life where I am so glad I took God's WAY rather than my own. Our WAYS and THOUGHTS are not on the same level as God's unless we have made His WAYS and THOUGHTS ours! On what do we dwell? What (or whose) WAYS and THOUGHTS are directing our life? As we accept HIS WAYS and take in HIS THOUGHTS, HIS WORD will accomplish HIS DESIRES and achieve HIS PURPOSES for us, in us and through us.

Have a great day HAVING IT HIS WAY!

As I See it!

Again: "When we reject God's commands, what we are actually declaring is WE THINK WE HAVE A BETTER IDEA THAN GOD!"

AS I SEE IT, I do not have all the answers to life. AS I SEE IT, I do not make all the right choices. AS I SEE IT, I don't always understand as I should. AS I SEE IT, I am limited in what I see. AS I SEE IT, left to myself, I am in for trouble! AS I SEE IT, all mankind is in this predicament. AS I SEE IT, we are in need of GUIDANCE BEYOND OURSELVES.

Solomon wisely advised. . .
"(5) TRUST IN THE LORD with all your heart, and DO NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. (6) IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and HE will make straight your paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)

It is GOD who has PROVIDED THE INSIGHT to get life back on the straight and narrow. It is GOD who PROVIDES THE VISION to get back on track. My ideas tend to take me off course. My ideas can get me lost. When I lean on my own understanding I tend to fall because that support is not even close to what God provides through His word for life, nor is it adequate in itself. Trusting in Him and acknowledging Him in all the ways of life will ultimately lead me to where He is for eternity. And that's exactly where He wants to get me ... and you.

Even when we don't understand, may we continue to trust. AS I SEE IT, with EYES SET ON GOD'S WAY, our life will remain on a proper course. HIS WAY is trustworthy.

Have a great day SEEING IT GOD'S WAY!

The Better Way!

As we considered yesterday: "When we reject God's commands, what we are actually declaring is WE THINK WE HAVE A BETTER IDEA THAN GOD!" The truth is that my ideas are not best! GOD'S IDEAS ARE BEST!

The Psalmist wrote. . .
(8) Good and upright is the LORD; therefore HE INSTRUCTS sinners IN THE WAY. (9) HE LEADS the humble IN WHAT IS RIGHT, and TEACHES THE HUMBLE HIS WAY. (10) ALL THE PATHS OF THE LORD are STEADFAST LOVE and FAITHFULNESS, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies." (Psalm 25:8-10 ESV)

ALL OF GOD'S WAYS -- EACH AND EVERY ONE OF HIS COMMANDS -- they are ALL FOR MY BENEFIT AND YOURS. Because God loves He provides the COUNSEL AND DIRECTION WE NEED for life. Because He is altogether faithful we can depend on HIS WAYS to work out. Just as God's essence is "good and upright", so is the essence of every one of His commands. Since He is the originator of life and all creation, why would we think His ideas could not be counted on? Why would we ever reason that we would know better than He? The BETTER WAY is to always accept HIS WAY!

Have a great day DIRECTED BY GOD'S WAY!

"I Have A Better Idea!"

In Genesis chapter 2 we read how God created man, placed him in a beautiful paradise, provided all he needed, and even walked in the garden with him. What more could man have wanted? What more could God have provided? Though God gave man the ability to choose (not creating man either as a puppet or a robot) He still gave him direction through His commands.

When God first placed man in the garden it was with the following very simple commands:
"(15) The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (16) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'You MAY SURELY EAT OF EVERY TREE of the garden, (17) BUT OF THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL YOU SHALL NOT EAT, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'" (Genesis 2:15-17 ESV)

A simple command dealing with what was permissible and what was not. When we turn to chapter three we find a choice was made.

"(2) And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, (3) but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.' " (4) But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. (5) For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (6) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, SHE TOOK of its fruit AND ATE, AND she also GAVE some TO HER HUSBAND who was with her, AND HE ATE. (7) Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths." (Genesis 3:2-7 ESV)

Therein lies the challenge man has dealt with ever since. God commands, but man thinks (or is led to think) differently. God commands, but man comes up with another option and chooses it. When we reject God's commands, what we are actually declaring is WE THINK WE HAVE A BETTER IDEA THAN GOD! It is an act of rejecting God's word and making a decision based on our own judgment. Is it any wonder we have so many problems in our society, our world, and even in our own lives?

Over the next few days we will consider four passages dealing with the reality of what is the BETTER IDEA.

Have a great day KNOWING THE FATHER KNOWS BEST!

For Better, For Worse! (part 2 of 2)

Later in the same chapter we noted yesterday (John 5), discussion continued, focused on the miracle Jesus had performed in healing the man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. (John 5:5) That he was healed was something to MARVEL at, but there were still those who would not accept who Jesus was, especially since he was doing some of this "work" on the Sabbath. This was an issue on which Jesus tried to reason with these on more than one occasion, getting His accusers to think about their own actions. (i.e. John 5:16-17; 7:21-24) However better than physical healing was the granting of life itself, and that for an eternity.

Jesus stated. . .
"(20) For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And GREATER WORKS THAN THESE WILL HE SHOW him, so that you may marvel. (21) For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also THE SON GIVES LIFE to whom he will." (John 5:20-21 ESV)

Jesus had brought physical healing to a man. More than this need was that of recognizing the state of one's spiritual health. What an enormous blessing that our Lord's power goes beyond the realm of the physical to provide REAL ABUNDANT LIFE now (John 10:10) and ETERNAL LIFE to come. Better than merely living life in this world is LIVING THE LIFE IN CHRIST now and for eternity! We must live in and for Him now because a time will come when even those "in the tombs will hear his voice." (John 5:28) At that rising there will be a distinction made with some experiencing the "RESURRECTION OF LIFE" while others the "resurrection of judgment." (John 5:29) That "RESURRECTION OF LIFE" will be to live eternally with the Lord.

Praise God for the good things we can enjoy presently in this life. Because of Jesus we can live with great joy now due to the assurance of God's promises in Him. (2 Corinthians 1:20) Though our life lived now can be viewed as great, that which is to come in Christ is EVEN GREATER! Therefore, as Christians we could respond to those who ask how we're doing, "I'm doing great, but things will get better!" Praise God for SUCH A LIFE as is provided in Christ to live life to its fullest now and with the assurance of life for an eternity.

Have a great day LIVING ENCOURAGED BY THE ANTICIPATION OF EVEN GRANDER THINGS TO COME!

For Better, For Worse! (part 1 of 2)

When marriage vows are taken, the expression "for better or for worse" is often recited in the midst of the vows the couple make with each other. Pledging their love and life together, couples need to commit to work through the good times and the bad times in a manner revealing their COMMITMENT TO and the NEED FOR each other. A reality of life is that some things are good while others are not. And even in the midst of those things perhaps we could acknowledge that things "could be worse", but they can also get better. Such a perspective can encourage as we move through the varying experiences of life.

When bemoaning a given circumstance or situation, do we understand what truly could be worse? And even at the best of times do we understand there is still something even better? Recently reading through the fifth chapter of the Gospel of John, I was struck by the contrast of such focuses relative to a warning as well as some encouragement. Today, let us note one aspect of this and -- Lord Willing -- we will note the other tomorrow.

Jesus encountered a man who was described as being "an invalid for thirty-eight years." (John 5:5) Perhaps this man had thought he was in the worst condition he could have possibly been in. This man received healing from Jesus and in obedience to Jesus' command, picked up his bed and walked. The healing of his body was immediate and complete. Oh, what great power Jesus compassionately exercised on behalf of others.

When Jesus and this man crossed paths again, we note. . .
"(14) Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, 'See, you are well! SIN NO MORE, THAT NOTHING WORSE may happen to you.'" (John 5:14 ESV)

Something worse? Yes, there is something far worse than going through life physically crippled or handicapped in some way and that is to be crippled spiritually and therefore separated from God by sin in our life. We can survive and be saved in spite of poor physical health, but when our spiritual health is failing we are in serious eternal danger. This is where Jesus directed the focus of this man. We also need to retain a penitent spirit and seek to follow daily in the Will of God as we praise Him for the spiritual healing and restoration we have in Christ. What a gracious gift!

David seemed to express that the worst thing he could imagine was being separated from God. (Psalm 51:11) The sin-sick soul is in reality the worst malady we could suffer. We NEED JESUS to receive the blessing of reconciliation with God (Romans 5:9-11) and we need to SURRENDER to His Will to remain in the relationship that will spare us from the worst thing that could happen to us; eternal damnation and separation from God. May we entrust our life completely to Him throughout all of life's varied experiences.

Have a great day LIVING APPRECIATIVE OF RECONCILIATION IN CHRIST!
