View Toward Home!

Life is filled with many varied activities, many of which we enjoy and then what do we do? We go home! Sometimes that "going home" is with sadness that the fun or joy of the activity is over. It was fun while it lasted, but alas, now we must go home; returning to the everyday and mundane and ordinary stuff of life. Oh, how often we might have wished the time that seemed to have flown by so fast was still here.

Does that also reflect our view of this life's end? It seems even as Christians we often view death with mixed feelings; wanting the reward, but also desiring to hang on to what we have here in this realm.

Jesus encouraged the disciples prior to His arrest and death on the cross. . .
"(1) LET NOT YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED. Believe in God; believe also in me. (2) In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, THAT WHERE I AM YOU MAY BE ALSO." (John 14:1-3 ESV)

What is our view of home? Perhaps it depends on what we view as home. What marks our sense of homeness and how is it impacting the manner in which we live? Do we view death with a sense of regret for what is left behind or do we hold a view toward something truly BETTER yet to come? Jesus' encouragement to the disciples was to not fear or be troubled in view of what might seem to be the end. Death would be a journey home to be forever in the presence of the Lord.

In Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth he stated. . .
"(6) So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are AT HOME IN THE BODY WE ARE AWAY FROM THE LORD, (7) for we walk by faith, not by sight. (8) Yes, we are of good courage, and we would RATHER BE AWAY FROM THE BODY AND AT HOME WITH THE LORD." (2 Corinthians 5:6-8 ESV)

A sense of homeness can be the view of life in this body or toward the eternity with Christ. Which do we view as BEST? Though Paul acknowledged his God given purpose in this realm, he saw for himself that "to depart and be with Christ ... is FAR BETTER." (from Philippians 1:23 ESV) That was where his greatest personal desire rested and he looked forward to going home with great joy!

It is not merely a life after death the Lord has promised, but A BETTER ONE (note Hebrews 11:16); one not prone to disappointment and pain, but to eternal joy. It is THE PLACE where there will be "No wishing for elsewhere to be." [from "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be", by Bridgewater and Bland © 1920] May we live life now joyfully fulfilling the purposes for which we have been given life as we look forward to the time when we will eagerly and happily go home.

Have a great day KNOWING THERE'LL BE NO OTHER PLACE LIKE HOME!

Smorgasbord Or Full Meal Deal?

There are some things which we may find HARD TO SWALLOW. However, I find it amazing how some will try anyway. Now, I'm not talking about circus sword swallowers or glass eaters, or even others who have gained notoriety for cutting up a bicycle into small pieces and ingesting it. What amazes me is how blind some are to the ideas they will eat up and digest as truth or how easily they will reject one point of Scripture while holding so strongly to another rather than seeing the manner in which it all fits together.

Note a reference Jesus made regarding some of the religious leaders of that day.
"(23) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. (24) You blind guides, STRAINING OUT A GNAT AND SWALLOWING A CAMEL!" (Matthew 23:23-24 ESV)

That may sound funny (and perhaps prompted a chuckle from some of the listeners), but the point here was a serious one. There are many ideas today we should consider as unpalatable. Jesus made the above statement to those who were living under the Jewish Law. For us, when it comes to God's Word, we should continue to develop a taste for all that is there. God did not lay His commands before us as a SMORGASBORD to pick and choose what we consider palatable to our own personal tastes. What He has laid before us is a FULL MEAL DEAL to satisfy and nourish every aspect of our life. May we find great joy in the daily feast!

Have a great day FEASTING ON GOD'S WORD!

Knowledge Vs. Relationship!

Knowledge is good, but it can puff up. (1 Corinthians 8:1) It is possible to think we know more than we really do or to know, but not as we ought to know. (1 Corinthians 8:2)

There are so many areas in life where education has not always made a difference. How much more education does there need to be (except for subsequent generations) about the dangers of drinking and driving and yet it still happens and deaths still occur. More and more ill effects of smoking have been noted and the warnings on cigarette packages are now in larger print and still the habit is taken up and health is impacted. However, some have stopped smoking out of concern more for their children's health than for their own. It seems the consideration of the relationship provided more motivation than the knowledge of the health risks.

To some who questioned the authority of Jesus, he stated. . .
"(39) You SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES because you THINK that IN THEM YOU HAVE ETERNAL LIFE; and it is they that bear witness about me, (40) YET YOU REFUSE TO COME TO ME THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE." (John 5:39-40 ESV)

Some may think they can study enough of the Scriptures to get their life on track. Certainly we need to continue reading, taking to heart, and applying the principles of God's Word to our life. However, without the relationship to Jesus we will not find LIFE. The Scriptures can lead us to Christ, and knowing them will help us clearly identify sin and direct us away from it, but the Scriptures cannot atone for sin. We must come to Jesus for the forgiveness we need and abide in that relationship. (1 John 1:7)

John wrote. . .
"(11) And this is the testimony, that God gave us ETERNAL LIFE, and THIS LIFE IS IN HIS SON. (12) WHOEVER HAS THE SON HAS LIFE; whoever does NOT HAVE THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT HAVE LIFE." (1 John 5:11-12 ESV)

Could it be any plainer than that? There may be many who know about Jesus and who may be able to quote a lot of Scripture. However, is there a relationship with the Lord? Have they been united in a relationship with Him. (Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3-4) The Scriptures -- both Old and New -- testify regarding Who Jesus is and the difference He has made for mankind. He gave His life to provide us with ABUNDANT LIFE (John 10:10) and LIFE ETERNAL! Since He is the only access to the Father (John 14:6) let us remain in an abiding relationship with Him. That will reveal we do truly know as we ought!

Have a great day EXPERIENCING LIFE IN JESUS!

Itching!

Some have the idea that if the palm of your hand itches, it means you are going to come into some money. For many that would sound like a good itch to pursue. However -- even if such were true -- not all itches bring benefit in satisfying them.

When one has an itch on the skin there is the strong tendency to scratch. That scratching can feel so good and comforting for a while, but it is also possible to scratch to the point even more harm is done by making the area raw and open to infection. There is therefore the need to RESIST scratching the itch. If ointment doesn't work, sometimes FOCUSING THE MIND on something else can help since it seems the more the itch is the center of attention the more it itches.

This is also true relative to RESISTING the tendency to reject the truth to satisfy some other desire. The mind needs to not be allowed to remain resting on the desire that might be itching to be satisfied when that "itch" is contrary to the Will of God. Focused on the itch can actually draw more toward it.

In Paul's second letter to Timothy we read. . .
"(3) For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but HAVING ITCHING EARS they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, (4) and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)

The Greek word used by Paul is "knetho" which means "to scratch" or "tickle". It is used metaphorically of an eagerness to hear. [source: W.E. Vine's Expos. Dict. Of N.T. Words] In the previous verses Paul exhorted Timothy toward diligence in the unceasing preaching of God's Word (2 Timothy 4:1-2) in order to ward off the desire to run off after other desires and ideologies.

Whatever one "wants" to hear, a teacher of it can usually be easily found in this world; especially via the internet today. However, let us RESIST scratching the itch or pursuing what simply tickles our fancy. Let us find the blessed satisfaction that comes through FOCUSING THE MIND on what we "need" to hear, for that will always come from God's Word. May we surround and fill our life with it!

Have a great day GENEROUSLY APPLYING THE BALM OF GOD'S WORD TO OUR LIFE!

A Beginning Point!

Some people don't seem to learn from the past; even that of their own. They keep doing the same things while expecting different results. If there is the need for a different outcome we need to change something and that change often begins WITH OURSELVES. Our own individuals actions -- as we continue to yield more to the Will of God -- can even affect change in the lives of others around us. That brings to mind the words "Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me." [song by Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller (1955)]

Paul exhorted. . .
"(17) Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. (18) If possible, SO FAR AS IT DEPENDS ON YOU, live peaceably with all." (Romans 12:17-18 ESV)

We ought to GIVE THOUGHT TO OUR ACTIONS, that they always be honorable and glorifying to God. The word "honorable" here is translated from the Greek "kalos" which refers to what is beautiful or fair in appearance and therefore also denotes what is good. Are we seeking to live beautiful and ethical lives in this world?

As followers of the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6), we are to be seekers of peace as well. By seeking peace with others -- as with less conflict -- the door may be more easily opened to share the truth of God. However, there is no assurance of peace with all even when we might have put forth our best effort. Not everyone wants peace. Also truth and falsehood come into conflict with each other and though the truth should be spoken in love (Ephesians 4:15) it must not be set aside.

Remember Jesus said. . .
"(9) Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be called SONS OF GOD." (Matthew 5:9 ESV)

Are we sharing the likeness? Though peace may not always we attainable, may we not be the one responsible for it not existing. AS FAR AS IT DEPENDS ON US, let it begin there.

Have a great day FULFILLING OUR PART IN AFFECTING PEACE!

Head Strong!

STRENGTH! Muscles! Working out! Repetitions! Resistance training. It can do the body good. However, it can also go to one's head!

A "muscle-head" is defined as a person who is muscular and athletic, especially possessing an interest in body building. It is also used in reference to a selfish, egotistical individual at a gym or fitness center who is self-observed in their own developed physique while looking down on others. In its slang usage, "muscle-head" refers to a person as being stupid; having muscle where there should be brains. Perhaps such could be described as being physically strong while being weak-minded.

Then there is "headstrong." That is the person generally noted for being stubborn, obstinate and not readily open to the advice of others.

According to these definitions, being known as a "muscle-head" or being "headstrong" are not necessarily compliments. Now, physical health is important. Having muscles that work for us is good. However, there is other STRENGTH we should note in association with the "brain-muscle" and "heart-muscle" and that is the focus of our thoughts and affections so as to bring us toward greater SPIRITUAL FITNESS!

As Joshua was nearing the end of his life and leadership of the nation of Israel, he exhorted them toward faithfulness to God and His commands. We read. . .

"(6) Therefore, BE VERY STRONG TO KEEP AND TO DO ALL THAT IS WRITTEN in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, (7) that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, (8) but you shall CLING TO THE LORD YOUR GOD just as you have done to this day." (Joshua 23:6-8 ESV)

The Hebrew word translated "very strong" in the ESV has also been translated "courageous." According to Strong's Lexicon the Hebrew means to be strong or grow strong, to prevail or prevail upon, or to be firm or secure. Is our "brain-muscle" and our "heart-muscle" being conditioned to FIRMLY HOLD the focus on God and His Will? Are we continually training ourselves to "be VERY STRONG to keep and to do all that is written" in the Scriptures for directing our life?

Remember Paul's exhortation to Timothy where we read. . .
"(7) Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather TRAIN YOURSELF FOR GODLINESS; (8) for WHILE BODILY TRAINING IS OF SOME VALUE, GODLINESS IS OF VALUE IN EVERY WAY, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." (1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)

STRENGTH! May we continue developing the muscles of the heart and the brain. Let us become HEAD AND HEART STRONG to enable us to hold firmly to the Will of God. The continual repetitions of reading His Word are a necessity for building strong faith and a heart for carrying out the righteousness of God. Resistance training against temptation and the ways of the world around us must also be focused on with great seriousness. Building our own life in this way will aid in building up the Body of Christ (the church) as well. May the head (and heart) BE STRONG to keep the focus where it ought to be.

Have a great day FOCUSED FOR FITNESS FOR ABIDING IN GOD'S WILL!

Light!

Light! It makes a huge difference for life. Its significance can even be noted from the fact when God began creation, He started with light. (Genesis 1:3) Without light we would find ourselves stumbling around in darkness.

Now, not all light is the same. There is TRUE LIGHT and there is artificial light. Some living in regions with many grey days are severely impacted by the lack of the natural and direct sunlight. These individuals suffer a mood disorder referred to as "Seasonal Affective Disorder ("S.A.D.") which is also known as winter depression or winter blues. For such sufferers, they either have to move to a region with more sunshine or rely on special lamps which replicate the natural lighting of the sun.

As John introduced both the Jesus the Messiah and John the Baptist in his gospel, he stated . . .

"(6) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (7) He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. (8) He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. (9) THE TRUE LIGHT, which ENLIGHTENS EVERYONE, was coming into the world." (John 1:6-9 ESV )

Though John was enlightening others by directing the attention toward "THE TRUE LIGHT", he was not that light himself. His calling was to point others toward the TRUE LIGHT sent to enlighten everyone; Jesus, THE SON of God! Though many sadly rejected the TRUE LIGHT, those who did accept and chose to live in the TRUE LIGHT received "grace upon grace." (John 1:16)

What a blessing to be living in the LIGHT OF THE SON! It is through Jesus we have been given "the right to become children of God." (John 1:12) It is also in living in the TRUE LIGHT that we have the continuing forgiveness of our sins. (1 John 1:7) Without THE SON -- the TRUE LIGHT of the world (John 8:12) -- it would be a sad life we would live and a sad eternity we would spend. Continuing to follow Him we will not walk in darkness (John 8:12) and will someday live in the realm of never ending day. (Revelation 21:23-25) Praise God for the TRUE LIGHT He has provided!

Have a great day BEING GLAD WE LIVE IN THE LIGHT OF THE SON!

Safe!

People "play it safe" because they don't want to get hurt. If something is not safe, sensibility dictates staying away from it so as to not suffer injury or die as a result. Being saved from death is considered an act of heroism. After all, life is precious and ought to be preserved. However, as Christians we are encouraged to understand that EVEN IN DEATH we are safe.

Peter encouraged. . .
"(18) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, THAT HE MIGHT BRING US TO GOD, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit," (1 Peter 3:18 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"(18) Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners TO BRING YOU SAFELY HOME TO GOD. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit." [NLT, © 2004, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

Peter made it clear that death is not the end, but rather an opening of the way into an eternity with God far removed from the afflictions and challenges of this life. Our Lord's own victory over death assures us of the SAFETY IN OUR OWN DEATH. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23) Death no longer has victory over us. (1 Corinthians 15:54-57) In Christ we have been moved from death to life. (John 5:24)

There is another death, however, of which there is cause for concern. It is that which is called the "second death" (Revelation 21:8); an eternal separation from God. Still, those who overcome in Christ need NOT FEAR THAT DEATH, for they are safe. (note Revelation 2:11 & 21:7) Through our Lord's heroic enduring of the cross, we can rejoice that even IN DEATH WE ARE SAFE. We may not know how or when, but we can trust in the deliverance walking with Christ assures. Therefore, let us not fear.

I Don't Care!

"I don't care!" That's an attitude we seem to run into more and more today. So many people just don't care! They are caught up in their own world, their own things, their own desires, and give little (if any) thought to anyone or anything else. Such an attitude of indifference can be an ugly thing. In fact, doesn't it sound rather childish?

However, there is another side to this. Paul was a marvelous example of the Christian Spirit as he approached his ministry. And guess what! Paul had an "I don't care!" attitude. What? Paul? That's right -- Paul! Notice it in his own words.

In his farewell address to the Ephesian elders he said. . .
"(24) But I DO NOT ACCOUNT MY LIFE OF ANY VALUE NOR AS PRECIOUS TO MYSELF, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God." (Acts 20:24 ESV)

And to the Philippians Paul expressed from prison. . .
"(15) Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. (16) The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. (17) The former proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. (18) WHAT THEN? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice," (Philippians 1:15-18 ESV)

The thing which made the difference for Paul was he knew what to care about and what not to care about. He did not care about his life, nor about those who seemed to feel they had to compete with him in ministry, just AS LONG AS THE MESSAGE OF CHRIST WAS BEING SPREAD! Paul cared deeply for the lost. He cared greatly for holding to the truth in Christ. He would spend himself and be spent for the sake of the Gospel. (2 Corinthians 12:15) He was no "glory hog" either. He didn't care if he was not the one doing all the teaching and baptizing, just AS LONG AS IT WAS GETTING DONE. He was the servant and it was God who brought the increase! (note I Cor. 3:5-8)

What a marvelous picture of a servant who had truly died to self and was living for Christ! May that also be our aim.

Have a great day CARING ABOUT THE RIGHT THINGS!

Memory!

Memory is an interesting thing. How often do we find ourselves forgetting what we try to remember while remembering what we've tried to forget. It is true some things seem to stand out in our minds more than others regardless of what we do. I am a list maker and am so thankful for "sticky-notes" to remind me of things I need to do during the day. Getting our memory to work for us rather than against us can be challenging.

It has been said, "A well-trained memory is one that permits you to forget everything that isn't worth remembering." [Battista] What we seek to retain and where we rest our focus is important to consider. Our remembrances and thoughts can either become a source of discouragement or encouragement.

God is the GREAT REMEMBERER. He remembers all His promises (i.e. Psalm 105:42) and will not forget the works His people have done. (Hebrews 6:10) However, He is also the GREAT FORGETTER.

Quoting from Jeremiah 31:33 & 34, the writer of Hebrews encouraged. . .
"(15) And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, (16) 'This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,' (17) then he adds, 'I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS NO MORE.' (18) Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin." (Hebrews 10:15-18 ESV)

How often have we continued to beat ourselves up over what God has forgiven and put out of His mind. Praise God for the provision of FORGIVENESS that we have through the power of the blood of Jesus. May we continue to keep His Will in our mind as we trust His promise to FORGIVE and FORGET the sins we have committed. Praise God for such a blessing to encourage us as we press on in Christ.

Have a great day REMEMBERING GOD'S FORGETFULNESS!

Offers!

Offers. They come to us through the mail. They come by phone and even text message. They come via e-mail, many of which meet the fate of our delete button. They also pop up on our computer screens. Though many of the offers may sound good, they are not all alike. In fact, most that sound too good to be true probably are!

There seems to be an epidemic of offers for getting rich quick and easy. However, many of those offers tend to only fill the coffers of the people behind them while emptying the wallets of those who accept. Deceptive offers like that of the great deceiver himself. The devil's offers attract the attention of many, but he too is a taker rather than a giver.

Remember the offer the devil made the Lord prior to the beginning of His public ministry. It was in the third temptation where we read. . .

"(8) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. (8) And he said to him, 'ALL THESE I WILL GIVE YOU, IF YOU WILL FALL DOWN AND WORSHIP ME.'" (Matthew 4:8-9 ESV)

Was it the devil's to give? A lot in this world does seem to be under his control. Had Jesus approached things in a worldly way He may have gained more followers. If He had met the expectations of the Jewish leadership, they would have honored rather than crucified Him. (1 Corinthians 2:8) However, all in accordance with the Divine timetable, Jesus was declared Sovereign over all; not the devil's way, but by way of the cross to ultimately rise victorious over all. (Philippians 2:8-11)

The devil's work continues in and through the world today. That work comes through this world's offers of pleasures that are so fleeting, endangering many to losing what is long lasting. The world may want to show us a good time, but God -- through Jesus -- offers us a GREAT LIFE now and for an eternity with Him! The world may want to give us a fun time, but the Lord wants us to find the LASTING JOY OF LIVING a godly life! The world may have its ideas of peace through compromise, but God wants us to know the PEACE THAT SURPASSES UNDERSTANDING (Philippians 4:7) as we abide in the truth of Jesus.

The devil seeks to fill his coffers with a following while the Lord's offers will enrich us and ultimately take us to be where He is. May we not fall prey to worldly sway as we continue in the Lord's Way.

Have a great day KNOWING WHAT GOD OFFERS IS GOOD AND TRUE!

Good Opportunities!

We might be on the lookout for many "good opportunities" in life. Those opportunities may be associated with a good deal on something we wish to purchase, a nice place to live, a career choice, or many other desires associated with this life. However, how do we define "good"? Comfortable? Delightful? Enjoyable? Pleasant? Could a good opportunity not be exactly what we desire yet be exactly what provides opportunity that might not otherwise exist? If so, are we able to focus on the HIGHER GOOD and surrender to being used toward it?

As Jesus was very honest with His disciples regarding challenges that were to come, He stated. . .

"(12) But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name's sake. (13) THIS WILL BE YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO BEAR WITNESS." (Luke 21:12-13 ESV)

Such situations would result or turn out to be opportunities to testify to the truth of Jesus in the presence of those they might not otherwise have the opportunity. Paul's arrest and eventual imprisonment at Rome provided the opportunity to share his faith and the truth of the Gospel with Roman officials (i.e. Acts 24:24; 26:1-29) and ultimately even reach some in "Caesar's household." (Philippians 4:22)

As we surrender to being used by God in drawing others to Christ, we may not always find ourselves doing what we had planned or ending up where we had thought we would. However, do we have enough love for the Lord and the lost to recognize the opportunities as they arise to share the Good News of Jesus? Certainly we may face unpleasant challenges, but are we open to seeing the HIGHER GOOD God can do through us wherever we might be?

You may not be in the school you want, but can you shine with the example of Christ where you are? The job you have (or eventually gain) may not be exactly what you had envisioned, but do you see the opportunities for your godly example to be made evident in your work ethic and how you interact with co-workers? The community in which you live may not be the one you really wanted, but can you see the opportunities for the HIGHER GOOD you can do there as you stand firm in your faith and selflessly serve in the love of Christ?

Though mistreated by others or having our faith opposed, there is opportunity for HIGHER GOOD. The genuineness of our faith can be made more evident and others may come to know it is worth standing for as well. May we keep our eyes open to the opportunities God provides wherever we are and whatever the situation as we journey on through this life.

Have a great day FULFILLING GOD'S GOOD WHERE WE ARE!

Fair Share!

It is easy to view our own "self-determined" significant role we have played in things to allow us to think less of the involvement of others. Certainly not everyone has the same talents or even energy to give in life, but all that is contributed together adds up to make a significant difference. Besides, do we forget GOD'S ROLE in it all? Are we guilty of thinking we deserve or have merited all the blessings we are receiving while others are not? Do we not recognize that even as we do all we have been commanded we are still unworthy servants who have only done our duty? (see Luke 17:10) Yes, we need to be careful of our attitude.

In 1 Samuel 30 where we read of David and his men pursuing the Amalekites who had taken their families and property, there were 200 of his 600 men who were too exhausted to continue. (vss.9-10) Therefore, leaving them behind, David continued the pursuit with 400 men and the Amalekites were defeated with all the families and possessions of David and his men (as well as other spoil of the Amalekites) being retrieved. What a blessing over which to rejoice. However, some took at dim view toward those who had not gone all the way into the battle.

We read. . .
"(21) Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow David, and who had been left at the brook Besor. And they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. And when David came near to the people he greeted them. (22) Then all the wicked and worthless fellows among the men who had gone with David said, 'Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except that each man may lead away his wife and children, and depart.' (23) But David said, 'You shall not do so, my brothers, WITH WHAT THE LORD HAS GIVEN US. HE HAS PRESERVED US AND GIVEN INTO OUR HAND the band that came against us. (24) Who would listen to you in this matter? For as his share is WHO GOES DOWN INTO THE BATTLE, so shall his share be WHO STAYS BY THE BAGGAGE. They SHALL SHARE ALIKE.' (25) And he made it a statute and a rule for Israel from that day forward to this day." (1 Samuel 30:21-25 ESV)

Those "worthless fellows" with their complaint seemed to have supposed all the credit for victory belonged with themselves and therefore the 200 who had remained behind deserved nothing except to have their families back. After all, they had fought long. (vs.17) However, those who were too exhausted to go further still had a role in watching over the baggage (the supplies). David acknowledged it was what THE LORD HAD GIVEN. It was the LORD Who had preserved them in battle and given back into their hands. (vs.23) Therefore, all would share in the blessings. David even sent some of the spoil to the places where they had been and to the elders of Judah (vss.26-31); an act that may have aided in bringing the kingdom back together following the death of Saul.

Just as Jesus illustrated in His parable of the workers sent into the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16), what the Owner (our God) gives for service is according to His desire whether it be having come early, at the third, sixth, ninth, or even eleventh hour. We're all in this together. Let us rejoice in SHARING in the blessings of responding to God and the victory He provides regardless of length of time or of part we've played. It is GOD WHO BRINGS THE BLESSINGS of victory anyway. Let us guard against being guilty of supposing it all depends on us alone! We don't deserve as much as we may think we do. Therefore let us rejoice in what we all share in together because of what GOD CONTINUES TO DO through us and for us.

Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR BEING MUCH MORE THAN FAIR!

The Tie That Binds!

It has often been noted a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Each link must do its part to fulfill its purpose of holding together. Each one of us has a significant place in the church as well and we need to be mindful of what it is that is able to hold us strongly together for the sake of the church (our Lord's Body) and the glory of God.

In Paul's letter to the church at Colossae he exhorted. . .
"(12) Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, (13) bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (14) And above all these put on LOVE, WHICH BINDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER IN PERFECT HARMONY." (Colossians 3:12-14 ESV)

I have a Greek interlinear that has "co-chain" for the word "binds". The Greek word used by Paul here is "sudesmos" whose root, "desmos", is a band, fetter, or anything for tying (from "deo", to bind or fasten with chains). "Sundesmos" is an intensive form of the word. ("sun", with). [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words.]

In the beginning words of a hymn written by John Fawcett we read...
"Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above."

Remember Jesus said. . .
"(34) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, you also are to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. (35) BY THIS ALL PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YOU HAVE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER." (John 13:34-35 ESV)

LOVE is the link that binds us with God. And that LOVE is powerful in its ability to keep us from being separated from Him. (i.e. Romans 8:38-39) LOVE is also the link that is to bind us together as Christians with one another. May it truly be the LOVE OF GOD that "co-chains" us strongly together so that the world is not able to pull us apart from either one another or from God.

Have a great day REMAINING PART OF GOD'S LOVE CHAIN!

Until It Hurts?

In what (who) do we trust? I mean really! What is it that we have really rested our dependence on? How stable and dependable is it?

As he addressed the subject of contentment in his first letter to Timothy, Paul stated. . .
"(9) But those who DESIRE TO BE RICH fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. (10) For the LOVE OF MONEY is a root of all kinds of evils. It is THROUGH THIS CRAVING that some have wandered away from the faith and PIERCED THEMSELVES WITH MANY PANGS." (1 Timothy 6:9-10 ESV)

Some have said, "GIVE until it HURTS." Such a statement seems to urge toward sacrificial giving. Most of what we give probably doesn't even come close to being felt because of the abundance out of which we give. However, there is a sense in which one can SAVE until it HURTS; hoarding away even to the doom of their soul. (note Luke 12:20-21) Paul noted how those who love money and long to be rich can end up piercing "themselves with many pangs." The New King James Version reads, "with many sorrows." Consider the fact there is only one letter difference between the words "MISER" and "MISERY"! How often has exactly that become the result?

Contrary to what many believe, money is not the key to happiness. LEARNING CONTENTMENT and experiencing the JOY OF GIVING to others is the key. Such a focus also keeps alive a spirit of thanksgiving for what one has and for the position to be able to share with others.

Having wealth -- in itself -- is not wrong as long as it is handled well and not allowed to take the place of TRUST IN GOD. However, the greatest thing we can BE RICH IN is "GOOD WORKS" (1 Timothy 6:18) to the glory of God and benefit of others. May we not bring hurt upon ourselves through a wrong perception of worldly wealth, but rather find the JOY of being good stewards with whatever God has blessed us.

Have a great day FEELING GOOD THROUGH GIVING WHILE TRUSTING GOD!

Left Waiting!

I like "Caller ID" on our phone because it clues me in if it is a sales call or lets me identify the caller by name as soon as I answer. It also lets me know whose call I might have missed even if they don't leave a message on our answering machine so I can call them to find out if they needed something from me. However, though "Call Waiting" may be enjoyed by some as it allows them to answer a new call while they are on another one, I don't particularly care for it. I figure if someone calls and gets a busy signal, they know I am on the phone and will try again. Also, I have had the experience when talking with someone else and they received another call (because they had "Call Waiting") with me being left to feel the other call was more important than mine. Perhaps it was, so I should be careful to not take it too personally. However, is it possible to convey such a message to God?

One of the reasons I post on our welcome screen Sunday mornings a reminder to turn off cell phones is so our worship together does not get interrupted. Certainly emergencies can arise making it needful for someone to be contacted. There are also occupations where a person may be on-call and needs to receive information and therefore the reason cell phones can be turned to vibrate rather than ring. Nevertheless, could the interruption of our focus toward God be like "Call Waiting" to convey, "Sorry God, I've got to take this one. I'll get back to you later."? Is GOD PUT OFF AND LEFT WAITING while we focus on other stuff?

Before stating his right to appeal to Caesar (Acts 25:11) and being sent as a prisoner to Rome, Paul was kept in custody by Governor Felix at Caesarea. Felix -- whose wife was Jewish (Acts 24:24) -- was familiar with "the Way" (Acts 24:22) and had opportunity to listen to the testimony of Paul on more than one occasion.

We read. . .
"(24) After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. (25) And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, "Go away for the present. WHEN I GET AN OPPORTUNITY I WILL SUMMON YOU." (26) At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he SENT FOR HIM OFTEN AND CONVERSED WITH HIM. (27) When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison." (Acts 24:24-27 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads, "(25) . . . 'WHEN IT IS MORE CONVENIENT, I'LL CALL FOR YOU AGAIN.'" [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

Later! Some other time! When I can work you in. When it is more convenient! I'll get back to you later! And how many opportunities to hear and appropriately respond to the Gospel of Jesus have been missed? Too often there are so many other things people seem to think they have to do first. Such occurred even as Jesus walked this earth as He tried to point those who were distracted by the urgent toward what was MOST IMPORTANT! (Luke 9:57-62)

Certainly there are responsibilities we have in this life which are not to be neglected. However, we DARE NOT SET GOD ASIDE while we deal with it all. The Lord and the things of God are to be priority one. Then, with the wisdom and strength God provides we can better deal with whatever else needs to be done. Convenient times may never come as opportunities that ought to be seized pass by. Though there could be many things we may have to get back to later, may it never be that which relates to God and the hope of the eternal life He offers.

Have a great day MAKING GOD AND HIS WILL PRIORITY ONE!

Stepped On Or Touched!

Having our toes run over by something or stepped on by someone can be quite painful. That pain can even make it difficult to walk. Perhaps it seems at times our feet take a lot of abuse. We're on them for so long during the day, and oh what agony when we stub a toe or something is dropped on them.

Jesus told a parable of a manager who was removed from the charge of a rich man's possessions and the shrewd steps this manager took to make sure he was helped by others in the future. (Luke 16:1-9) Our Lord then went on to point to a lesson on faithfulness whether it be over little or much. (Luke 16:10-12) Jesus also addressed the problem with a HEART divided between God and money. (Luke 16:13) All this teaching caught the attention of some of the Jewish leaders and so we read. . .

"(14) The Pharisees, WHO WERE LOVERS OF MONEY, heard all these things, and they ridiculed him. (15) And he said to them, 'You are those who justify yourselves before men, but GOD KNOWS YOUR HEARTS. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.'" (Luke 16:14-15 ESV)

Some would say Jesus had gone from preaching to meddling. That's what many say when the lessons hit too close to home. These did not like the finger accusatively pointing at themselves. Jesus was stepping on their toes and it hurt. However, it was their HEARTS -- which God knew -- that were in need of being touched. Yes, toes can hurt, but OPEN HEARTS are responsive to what needs to be changed when it is pointed out.

How often mankind needs to discern that what is highly exalted by the world is not always what is exalted by God. In fact, the world often exalts views that are immoral, disgusting, and shameful in His sight.

Since the message of God is actually aimed at HEARTS, are we listening with toes merely feeling the pain of being stepped on, or is our HEART remaining open to the lessons we need? Let us lift the view above our toes and center it on a HEART that has its attention turned toward God. With a HEART continually receptive to the lessons we need, our life walking will go much easier.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A HEALTHY HEART FOR WALKING WITH GOD!

Uplook To Outlook!

Believing and so being enabled to see as God would have us and worshipfully maintaining a singular focus on God -- as we have considered the last two days -- ought to have a dynamic impact on our disposition in life. Though the world around us may be in chaos and unrest, because of our focus resting on the greatness of God and our relationship with Him, others may wonder how we can still maintain a JOYFUL outlook on life.

Backing up to the first two verses of the psalm we have been noting we read. . .
"(1) Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE to the rock of our salvation! (2) Let us come into his presence with THANKSGIVING; let us make a JOYFUL NOISE TO HIM WITH SONGS OF PRAISE!" (Psalm 95:1-2 ESV)

With our life focused on God, do we have a joyful song in our heart that compels us on through life? Are we acknowledging life being lived in His presence that is accompanied by continual THANKSGIVING and PRAISE?

Because God exists and we are His, we should naturally be powerfully compelled toward worshipping Him! I don't mean only what we do when we assemble together, but every day of our life! Daily living with a worshipful disposition will be marked by a continual seeking to please Him and be characterized by a spirit of PRAISE and THANKSGIVING. May our continual looking up to God inspire an outlook that radiates such.

Have a great day JOYFULLY LIVING IN GOD'S PRESENCE WITH PRAISE!

He Is Worthy!

As we noted yesterday (Psalm 95:7b-10), we need to guard against hardening our hearts and not listening to God. He is so worthy of our undivided attention and worshipful focus. As the psalmist stated previous to those verses. . .

"(3) For the LORD is a GREAT GOD, and a GREAT KING ABOVE ALL gods. (4) In HIS hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are HIS also. (5) The sea is HIS, for HE made it, and HIS hands formed the dry land. (6) Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, OUR MAKER! (7) For HE is OUR GOD, and we are the people of HIS pasture, and the sheep of HIS hand. ...." (Psalm 95:3-7a ESV)

To reflect on those verses it seems it is all about God because all that exists does so because of His great work and position above all! So, what is He to us? Is He OUR GOD? Are we HIS SHEEP and the people of His pasture? Then does our life reflect the "worth-ship" He is due? Does our manner of living and speech declare our acknowledgment of the GREATNESS of God and His sovereignty as "KING ABOVE ALL"; being superior to any other authority or power? Is He remaining the Master over our entire being since He is our Maker?

There is much in this realm competing for our attention. If we are not careful we can become easily distracted by the varying activities of life and drawn away from a rightful singular focus on God and His Will. May we maintain a worshipful focus toward Him every day of our life.

Have a great day KEEPING OUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION ON GOD!

Seeing Is Believing?

The claim is often made that "seeing is believing". Perhaps that makes us think of the struggle of Thomas following Jesus' resurrection. Though the other disciples told him they had seen Jesus, he needed to see and touch for himself. (John 20:25) Fortunately when he saw, he DID BELIEVE! (John 20:27-28) Sadly, seeing did not (and does not) always produce that same response! On more than one occasion people asked Jesus for a sign so that they could "see and believe." (i.e. John 6:30) However, it seems that no matter the sign, there were those who just would not be convinced! Even when Jesus was on the cross there were mockers who challenged that if they saw Him come down from the cross, then they would believe. (Mark 15:32) Acknowledging Jesus' power to heal (i.e. Luke 6:7), seeing it, and witnessing even the raising of the dead (i.e. John 11:45-46) was not enough to convince some of the truth relative to Jesus! Though the miracles were not be denied, what was the problem? Actually one that has been around for centuries.

Consider again a psalm we noted a few days ago.
"(7) ... Today, if you hear his voice, (8) DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, as at Meribah, as on the day at Massah in the wilderness, (9) when your fathers put me to the test and put me to the proof, THOUGH THEY HAD SEEN MY WORK. (10) For forty years I loathed that generation and said, 'They are a people who go astray in their heart, and they have not known my ways.'" (Psalm 95:7b-10 ESV)

The psalmist focused back on the time of Israel's wilderness wandering and the HARD HEARTS that again and again rebelled against God. During the first century of the church, the Hebrew writer also urged those to whom he wrote to not make the same tragic mistake. (Hebrews 3:7-12) When the HEART IS HARDENED -- when one really does not want to believe -- it matters not the proofs provided or the signs seen, unbelief will prevail! Like hard ground that will not receive the seed that could otherwise germinate and grow, so is the HARD HEART toward the truth of God.

It is in believing God and what He has revealed that we are able to see. May our HEART REMAIN OPEN to God so that our eyes will continue seeing as they ought.

Have a great day KEEPING THE EYES OF OUR HEART OPEN!

Flee Fear's Snare!

The possibility of becoming trapped can be cause for fear. However, fear itself can also be a trap. Fear can paralyze or prompt actions and responses to life situations that may reflect a lack of TRUST IN GOD. Which power is being reflected more and more in our life?

Solomon stated. . .
"(25) The FEAR OF MAN lays A SNARE, but whoever TRUSTS IN THE LORD IS SAFE." (Proverbs 29:25 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"(25) Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but to trust the LORD means safety." [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

We can be entrapped by the fear of men by allowing our actions or responses to be dictated by what we fear they might do to us. Rather than dread what man can do, we need to remember the ultimate power of God over our life and destiny. (i.e. Matthew 10:28) Therefore, we are encouraged to TRUST IN THE LORD and so be safe for an eternity. That security ought to remove the sense of feeling intimidated by man as we remember God has not given us a spirit of fear, "but of power and love and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)

Though Abraham was a great man of faith, he had his moments of weakness. On two separate occasions (Genesis 12:13; 20:2 & 5) -- out of fear of man (Genesis 20:11) -- he had Sarah say she was his sister rather than his wife, which was a half-truth as she was his half-sister. (Genesis 20:12) Peter also, out of fear of man, denied the Lord three times. (Matthew 26:69-75) That fear ensnared where TRUST IN THE LORD would have emboldened as it did Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who would bow only to God even if it meant the fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:16-18) These three friends of Daniel did not allow fear of man to dictate their response, but rather their unwavering TRUST IN THE LORD. They refused to shrink back in fear to avoid the wrath of King Nebuchadnezzar.

May we be like the Hebrew writer -- writing to encourage Christians going through a time of severe persecution -- who stated. . .

"(39) But we are NOT OF THOSE WHO SHRINK BACK and are destroyed, BUT OF THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH AND PRESERVE THEIR SOULS." (Hebrews 10:39 ESV)

Have a great day EXPERIENCING MORE FREEDOM FROM FEAR THROUGH GREATER TRUST IN THE LORD!

Beyond Skin Deep!

Sometimes we can appear just fine until some test reveals what is actually going on under our skin. MRI stands for "magnetic resonance imaging." An MRI is a scan that provides detailed images of the tissues of the body. CAT stands for "computerized axial tomography" and CAT scans use radiology to scan the body. PET stands for "positron emission tomography" and PET scans are used to look at the brain. These scans, X-rays and ultrasound imaging are all utilized to reveal what is below the surface to provide information relative to the health of the body. However, these tests do not detect abnormalities relative to the soundness of the soul.

In the words of the Lord to Judah given through the prophet Jeremiah we read. . .

"(9) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? (10) I THE LORD SEARCH THE HEART AND TEST THE MIND, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." (Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV)

Oh what a desperate situation when there is SICKNESS OF THE HEART. This is true physically, but most seriously to our eternal destiny when it is one's SPIRITUAL CONDITION.

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"(9) The human heart is most deceitful and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? (10) But I know! I, THE LORD, SEARCH ALL HEARTS AND EXAMINE SECRET MOTIVES. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve." [NLT © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

To undergo a GOD-scan, what would be revealed? Are there abnormalities that may require some radical surgery? Are there imbalances in the THINKING OF THE MIND that need correcting? Are the HEART'S AFFECTIONS properly focused on the righteousness of God? HE KNOWS! As we read His word we need to be open to the diagnoses that indicate what therapy we might be in need of for correcting the problems. May we remain open to the healing and transformation God can bring to our life so that our SPIRITUAL HEALTH will be what it ought to be.

Have a great day APPRECIATING GOD'S SPIRITUAL EXAMINATION!

Following And Leading!

There was a motorist who had driven round and round the block, yet was unable to find a parking spot. Finally he stuck the following note under his windshield wiper: "I have circled this block for 15 minutes. If I don't park here I will miss a very important appointment. 'Forgive us our trespasses.'" When he returned to his car the following note was attached to a parking ticket: "I have circled this block for 15 years. If I don't give you a ticket I could be fired. 'Lead us not into temptation.'"

I need forgiveness. That is one thing we all have in common. (i.e. Romans 3:23) This is the very reason God sent His Son, so that through His death on the cross our sins could be taken away. The means of forgiveness is something for which we should be eternally grateful. God acknowledged our need and met it through Christ. However, the fact we can be forgiven is not to be interpreted as a license to continue in sin.

Someone has said, "I don't need to be led into temptation. I can find it myself."

I also need to guard against thinking I'm stronger than I might be. Temptation is something to steer away from, rather than seeing how close we can get without "falling in" or "getting burned." We need to STEER AWAY FROM TEMPTATION, not only FOR OUR OWN SAKE, but also for the SAKE OF OTHERS. We might possibly be able to walk on the edge without falling, but someone following may not be as fortunate. In following in our steps another may get close to the edge and stumble and fall. Whether we really want it or not we each have the RESPONSIBILITY OF BEING AN EXAMPLE.

Note Jesus' warning to His disciples:
"And he said to his disciples, "(1) Temptations to sin are sure to come, but WOE TO THE ONE THROUGH WHOM THEY COME! (2) It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin. (3) PAY ATTENTION TO YOURSELVES! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, (4) and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him."" (Luke 17:1-4 ESV)

These "little ones" Jesus mentioned could be merely children or may possibly be even a reference to weaker brethren. Still, the warning we dare not miss is to WATCH OUR OWN LIFE so as to NOT BE ONE WHO WOULD LEAD ASTRAY. The best way to have steps worth following is to keep walking in the steps of Jesus.

Have a great day LEADING BY FOLLOWING OUR LEADER!

Faith To Follow!

When I was quite young, I hated the scary carnival rides. Though I love the sensations today, back then I didn't like being turned upside down and whirled around being made to feel my stomach was going to be spun right out of my body. A free ride on "The Octopus" with my older brother who had brought some grease rags to the ride operator at a county fair couldn't have ended fast enough. I wanted the ride to stop. I didn't like it.

When the world's fair was in Seattle, Washington in 1962 (I was eight at the time), while my brothers and cousins went on some spinning rides, I wanted the tamer stuff. I remember "driving alone" an old model T car on a slightly elevated wooden roadway. With my hands gripping the steering wheel I very diligently steered that car as I came to the curves and winding path ahead of me. I was so absorbed in my careful steering that it was not until the ride was almost done that I noted the center track that kept the car on course whether I steered or not. The concentration on my careful steering was apparently obvious because my parents said, "You were really steering. Were you afraid you would go off the edge?"

How much does that depict life; holding on so tightly and steering so anxiously as each turn appears, while failing to trust in the path God has laid out for us? Am I helping God drive my life or am I trusting Him to set the course and get me safely home?

Remember the faith of Abraham. Listed among other heroes of faith, the Hebrew writer noted. . .

"(8) BY FAITH ABRAHAM OBEYED WHEN he was CALLED TO GO out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. AND HE WENT out, NOT KNOWING WHERE HE WAS GOING. (9) By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. (10) For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God." (Hebrews 11:8-10 ESV)

I have to admit I love being able to download maps and directions and use my GPS (Global Positioning System) to help me get where I'm going. I like to know before I go! However, what marks my movement in my spiritual journey? What a FAITH Abraham possessed, just to follow God obediently even though he did not know where he was going. He simply trusted that wherever God led would be good. I need a FAITH like that; a FAITH that does not get anxious and resist and question, but rather trusts even with the seemingly impossible. It is a FAITH LIKE THAT OF ABRAHAM who even in his old age -- with the promise of an heir yet to be fulfilled --was "FULLY CONVINCED THAT GOD IS ABLE to do what he had promised." (Romans 4:21)

Yes, Abraham most definitely had a FAITH TO FOLLOW and one worth following. Let us consider his example as we learn to more trustingly follow God wherever He leads in life. GPS: God's Path is Safe! HE IS ABLE to get us to the land of promise!

Have a great day LIVING WITH A FAITH TO GO!

Warning For Each Generation!

"Don't touch! It's hot!" "Look both ways before crossing the street!" Don't wander off or you'll get lost!" How many generations have heard the warnings? Still, fingers get burned, children get hit by cars, and they get lost in the woods.

In Deuteronomy chapters 8-9, Moses urged Israel to remember God, not forgetting -- once they had settled in the promised land -- that it was He who blessed them. (note Deuteronomy 8:11-17) On this occasion Moses REMINDED that generation of the previous generation's lack of trust in God, their stubbornness, and rebellion. This REMINDER took place prior to this next generation's entering into the promised land. Still, how soon the lessons of history can be forgotten. Joshua REMINDED the next generation of this history as he urged faithfulness to God prior to his death. (Joshua 24) Later, one of the psalmists REMINDED of this history, warning his generation to not commit the same error of hardening the heart and missing out on the blessing of God. (Psalm 95:7-11) Many generations later the writer of Hebrews cited this psalm in warning another generation against committing the same sin. (Hebrews 3:7-19)

Everything doesn't have to be learned from the "School of Hard Knocks"; the school of personal life experience. The past has been recorded so we can learn from it and be spared the same mistakes and fate. My generation and your generation and subsequent generations need to REMEMBER and take to heart the same warnings because it is too easy to settle into life and all its activities and begin to forget God.

The Hebrew writer exhorted. . .
"(12) TAKE CARE, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But EXHORT ONE ANOTHER EVERY DAY, as long as it is called 'today,' that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (14) For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence FIRM TO THE END." (Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV)

The result of not heeding the warning is to begin falling and wandering away from God! To do so destines us -- like a disobedient or impetuous child -- to get burned, experience the painful consequences of having not watched what we're walking into, and find ourselves lost. Thus the need for the continual REMINDER so that hardness of heart will be avoided and faithfulness to God and REMEMBRANCE of He being the provider of our life and all its blessings (and the holder of it for eternity) continues. Let us take care to REMEMBER the warnings so we can be spared the pain and reap the gain!

Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE BLESSING OF A BELIEVING HEART!

Always And Always!

During the development of the relationship between my wife and I prior to marriage and the continuing building of it after marriage, besides writing poetry to each other we also frequently exchanged little gifts; tokens of our feelings for each other. One item she gave me about two years into our marriage had the words, "I'll Love You Always And All Ways." It is still on the wall in our bedroom today. The many ways in which we have interacted with and related to each other has continued to reveal the sincerity and steadfastness of that love.

As Moses was providing the nation of Israel with a reminder of the commands of God prior to that generation entering into the promised land, he reminded them of the earlier generation's statement (while gathered at the mountain) of their willingness to obey (Deuteronomy 5:27) and how God had responded. In God's response was the wish. . .

"(29) OH THAT THEY HAD SUCH A MIND AS THIS ALWAYS, TO FEAR ME AND TO KEEP ALL MY COMMANDMENTS, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!" (Deuteronomy 5:29 ESV)

Unfortunately things had not gone well because the people had not continued in obedience to God and therefore were kept from entering the promised land themselves. The focus on this later occasion turned to a new generation and to subsequent generations as well. (Deuteronomy 6:20-23) Continuing in submission to the commands of God would mean a continuance of God's goodness toward them. As Moses' exhorted further regarding what was to be said to future generations we read. . .

"(24) And the LORD commanded us to DO ALL THESE STATUTES, to FEAR THE LORD our God, FOR OUR GOOD ALWAYS, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. (25) And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.'" (Deuteronomy 6:24-25 ESV)

"SUCH A MIND AS THIS ALWAYS" and "FOR OUR GOOD ALWAYS." The meeting of "ALWAYS" and "ALWAYS"! God's commands always have OUR GOOD IN MIND. That ought to be met with the possessing of a GOOD MIND that is focused to surrender to His commands ALWAYS and IN ALL WAYS! As would have been for Israel, "it will be righteousness for us", because it is the right approach to life God desires.

Have a great day SURRENDERED TO GOD'S WILL FOR OUR OWN GOOD AND HIS GLORY!

Lost Opportunity!

Several days ago I came across a handheld wind gauge that also gave altimeter, barometer, and temperature information (and a few other digital readouts), and was also submersible. It was marked fifty percent off and I thought it would be great for both hiking and kayaking, but decided to do some quick price checking first. I went to a couple other places and found similar gadgets for a higher price that did not do as much as the first model I had seen. Within less than an hour I returned to the first store and it -- the only one they had in stock -- had just been sold. I missed out on what now appears to have been A VERY GOOD BUY! Though I can certainly live without this gadget, it would have been nice to have not missed the opportunity.

Jesus told a parable about one who recognized A GOOD DEAL when he saw it and wasted no time making the purchase. We read. . .

"(45) Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, (46) who, on FINDING ONE PEARL OF GREAT VALUE, went and SOLD ALL THAT HE HAD AND BOUGHT IT." (Matthew 13:45-46 ESV)

This one KNEW VALUE when he saw it. That which was of greater value than "all that he had" was worth that cost in order to possess it. That is the value of God's kingdom. However, how many have been presented the opportunity and passed it up for something else? God's kingdom is worth the cost of all else we have because without it we lose all of any real value anyway! That is why Jesus exhorted for the seeking of the kingdom of God and His righteousness to be the number one pursuit of our life. (Matthew 6:33)

Being in God's kingdom will provide more for us than any other offer we will come across in our lifetime. It is one thing we cannot live without. May our life choices truly reflect how much we value it.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE INESTIMABLE VALUE OF THE THINGS OF GOD!

In Our Shoes!

"If that were me I would. . . ." Oh, how easy it is to think of what we would do or would have done in another's situation and then turn and be neglectful of what ought to be done in the situations of our own life. We might be well meaning and sincere, but when it comes to action, what characterizes our own follow through? More than what we might do in another's shoes is to pay attention to what we are doing in our own! Someone has said, "The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention!" [original source unknown]

In one of Jesus' parables we read. . .
"(28) "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' (29) And he answered, 'I WILL NOT,' BUT AFTERWARD HE CHANGED HIS MIND AND WENT. (30) And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I GO, SIR,' BUT DID NOT GO. (31) Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. (32) For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him."" (Matthew 21:28-32 ESV)

Of the two sons, one said he would (and perhaps really intended to), but did not. The other said he would not (and also may have intended that to be the way it was), but repented and did go and do what he had been commanded. It was not the intentions, but the GOING AND DOING that was seen as the obvious sign of carrying out the will of the father.

Jesus came face-to-face with many who claimed allegiance to God and the carrying out of His Will, but refused to accept Jesus as having been sent of God as the long awaited Messiah. And in the midst of their rejection, many whom these might have looked down upon were accepting and gaining entrance into the kingdom of God. Then, even after seeing that, these still refused to believe and so enter.

On another occasion Jesus stated. . .
"(10) One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much." (Luke 16:10 ESV)

Whether little or much, what characterizes the manner in which we are handling what has been entrusted to us? Let us not live by intention alone, but by every word and deed being done in faithfulness to the Will of God and to His glory!

Have a great day WALKING FAITHFUL IN ALL THINGS GREAT AND SMALL!

In Good Company!

"Nobody tells me what to do!" Have we heard others say that? Have we ever declared it ourselves? Such an approach to life may put one in the company of the many, but that doesn't necessarily mean being in good company.

Pride keeps many from submitting even to the best things. Sometimes people have refused to do something simply because someone else told them they had to do it! They chose not to do it to prove they were "their own man" (or woman) and no one else was going to call the shots.

It is true the choices we ourselves make (or choose not to make) impact the direction and destiny of our life. Still, relying of our own guidance is not sufficient. We often need the reminders or counsel others can offer as we go through life's varying circumstances. However, most of all we need the Divine guidance of God!

Through the prophet Jeremiah we have the needed exhortation to keep in mind. . .
"(23) I know, O LORD, that THE WAY OF MAN IS NOT IN HIMSELF, that it is not in man who walks TO DIRECT HIS STEPS. (23) Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing." (Jeremiah 10:23-24 ESV)

Too many lives can be described as sheep without a shepherd. Sheep left to themselves do not fair very well. It is in SUBMITTING to the Will of our Heavenly Father that places us in good company. For example, MOSES continually sought the guidance of God in leading the nation of Israel. When questions came up, he consulted God. He was very meek (Numbers 12:3) not taking any authority in and of himself, but was noted as being faithful in all God's house. (Numbers 12:7; Hebrews 3:2) OUR LORD demonstrated the same faithfulness in carrying out the Father's plan. JESUS always demonstrated the same faithfulness. (Hebrews 3:2)

John recorded. . .
"(28) So Jesus said to them, 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. (29) And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I ALWAYS DO THE THINGS THAT ARE PLEASING TO HIM.'" (John 8:28-29 ESV)

It was following the plan of the Father in every detail that demonstrated His love for the Father. (John 14:32) His fulfilling the plan is also what has made it possible for us to be drawn into the COMPANY OF HIS BRETHREN. (Hebrews 2:11) When we share His attitude of seeking to "always do the things that are pleasing" to the Father, we are in THE COMPANY OF JESUS. It is the BEST COMPANY in which we can choose to be!

Have a great day CHOOSING TO ACCEPT THE GUIDANCE THAT LEADS US GOD'S WAY!

Perfect!

Several weeks ago, while listening to the radio, the reference was made to a small child's conversation with her mother. The mother had been busy working around the house and she wanted the children to find something to do. Her young daughter responded, "But we want to have PERFECT FUN." When the mother asked what "perfect fun" was, her daughter responded, "PERFECT FUN is when YOU play with us."

We may find fun and joy in a lot of activities in this life, but are we beginning to find the MOST SATISFYING things are those associated WITH GOD and service in His Name? As this child saw "PERFECT FUN" in activities associated with her mother, do we see "PERFECT SATISFACTION" in living all of life associated WITH GOD?

Jesus encouraged the disciples with the peace associated WITH HIM where we read. . .
"(27) Peace I leave with you; MY PEACE I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27 ESV)

Through our relationship with God we can have a peace that brings more satisfaction than any the world may offer.

In Isaiah we read. . .
"(3) YOU KEEP HIM IN PERFECT PEACE WHOSE MIND IS STAYED ON YOU, because HE TRUSTS IN YOU. (4) Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD God is an everlasting rock." (Isaiah 26:3-4 ESV)

May our life and mind remain with God so that we can continue experiencing the PERFECT SATISFACTION, JOY, and PEACE only life with Him can provide.

Have a PERFECTLY PEACEFUL DAY WITH GOD!
Carl

Watch The Appetite!

The "man-of-war" is an interesting creature of the sea that is often washed ashore by strong winds and waves. It floats on the surface of the sea with its sail-like crest visible above the water's surface, giving no indication of its truly deadly character. It appears like a graceful, iridescent bubble above the water, but underneath trail behind it myriads of poisonous tentacles that can stretch down a hundred or more feet. This creature is assisted in its deadly work by the nomeus (referred to as the shepherd fish) which seems to be immune to the venom of the man-of-war while swimming in and out of the deadly strands. Larger fish seeing an easy catch rush to seize the meal, only to be trapped and paralyzed by the poisonous stings of the man-of-war's tentacles. This then provides a meal for both the nomeus and its deadly host.

The seemingly easy catches or the things of the world that may grab the attention are often not as promising as they might at first appear. We need to be mindful of what we develop an appetite for and where it takes us. Being drawn to the delights and delicacies of this world may put us in an inescapable position of spiritual death and separation from God.

Paul warned. . .
"(17) Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. (18) For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. (19) Their end is destruction, THEIR GOD IS THEIR BELLY, and they glory in their shame, WITH MINDS SET ON EARTHLY THINGS." (Philippians 3:17-19 ESV)

With what are we filling our lives? Is it a worldly appetite we are satisfying or have our mind and desires been set "ON THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE." (Colossians 3:2) Above the surface some of the things of this world may appear to be no danger, until we find ourselves entangled in the "tentacles" underneath. Rather than being driven by physical desires, may we be motivated by spiritual ones to continue seeking THINGS ABOVE! Maintaining our focus there will keep us moving that direction.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A CRAVING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS!
