What A Ride!
Several years ago my younger brother provided me with the opportunity to go up in a stunt glider while we were visiting on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. After liftoff he told the rest of the family that if I got sick, he would get his money's worth. Well, that he did not get, but I had the thrill of a lifetime. Though I must admit I skipped lunch that afternoon as my stomach did need to settle down a bit, I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the G-forces, momentary weightlessness, looping, and flying upside down. And besides all that, it was A WONDERFUL VIEW from up high in the sky.
Prior to the flight, the pilot -- who would sit behind me -- had helped me strap on a parachute and then get strapped into the cockpit of the glider. [A parachute? That can make one wonder.] He then explained what things were around me and drew my attention to a red handle in front of me that he said to not touch unless I was directed to do so in an emergency. That red handle was the means by which the cockpit cover (which he said was pretty expensive) could be released if ejection from the glider was necessary. [Ejection? Oh, yes, the parachute. Hmm.]
I could not have controlled the stick of that glider through the rolls, dives, and G-forces experienced, but fighting against the forces of gravity and inertia was not a problem for me. It was the pilot who made these flights several times a day who worked through all of that. Though it was my first flight, it was not his, so I left that in hands! I was merely up there for the ride and what a ride it was. Stunt after stunt the pilot would name it, describe it, and then I'd experience it. Those straps did a wonderful job of keeping me in my seat and the parachute did not have to be used.
Life is full of varying circumstances and situations that can cause anxiety and uneasiness. Perhaps we struggle when we are not able to be in control. However, let us REMEMBER GOD'S TRACK RECORD and that HE IS WITH US through it all.
In Paul's letter to the church at Rome he encouraged. . .
"(4) For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that THROUGH ENDURANCE AND through the ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE SCRIPTURES we might HAVE HOPE." (Romans 15:4 ESV)
Life definitely has its ups and downs. Sometimes we experience great weight attempting to pull us down. Now, I in no way am attempting to minimize the challenges we may face. However, where we remain focused will make a world of difference in how we move through them.
In view of his own experiences, Paul stated. . .
"(8) We are afflicted in every way, BUT NOT CRUSHED; perplexed, BUT NOT DRIVEN TO DESPAIR; (9) persecuted, BUT NOT FORSAKEN; struck down, BUT NOT DESTROYED; (10) always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so THAT THE LIFE OF JESUS MAY ALSO BE MANIFESTED IN OUR BODIES." (2 Corinthians 4:8-10 ESV)
Life challenges are real. They can become very unsettling. However, with the help of God we can defy the gravity and learn to ENJOY THE VIEW from the loftiness of A HEAVENLY PERSPECTIVE. He is with us all the way. Leave the control in His hands.
Have a great day TRUSTING GOD KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING!

Prepared Way!
As John the Baptist began preparing the way for the ministry of Jesus (the Messiah) to begin, he continued "proclaiming a baptism of REPENTANCE for the forgiveness of sins." (Luke 3:3) John's role was a pivotal one of moving minds from the Old to the New under Christ. It was not that God's plan was changing (as He needs no plan B), but that it was being fulfilled as was planned from the beginning. (1 Peter 1:19-21; 2 Timothy 1:9) The prophecy of Malachi had exhorted toward renewal of a right relationship with God more than four hundred years before, and how great was the need for lives to get BACK ON COURSE. Now, was the time and John was preparing the way for the path Jesus would open up for us.
As Luke noted John's coming being in the fulfillment of the words of the prophet Isaiah (Is. 40:3-5), we read. . .
"(4) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT. (5) Every VALLEY shall be FILLED, and every MOUNTAIN AND HILL shall be MADE LOW, and the CROOKED shall BECOME STRAIGHT, and the ROUGH PLACES shall BECOME LEVEL WAYS, (6) and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" (Luke 3:4-6 ESV)
It was time for lives to be put on a RIGHT PATH. Crooked ways were to be STRAIGHTENED out. Life was to be put ON THE LEVEL with God through finding its paved path in Christ. Is that still not the great need in the world today? So many have dropped to "low levels" of immorality and others are going through life riding high on the arrogance of pride in choosing their own way. Crooked ways are being followed and lives need to be STRAIGHTENED out.
There is still much need in this world for REPENTANCE -- turning the life back around to move in God's direction -- and Jesus came to help put us back on that right path. A PENITENT spirit needs to be retained in our life so that when our life course needs correcting, we will be open to it. May the wisdom of Jesus truly being THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE (John 14:6) be seen in us so that others may choose that path as well.
Have a great day PURSUING THE PATH THE LORD HAS PAVED!

Opinion Irrelevant!
We have recently experienced some cold weather and snow, though not quite as much as other parts of our country. Some places have had such inclement weather they have experienced the cancellation of airline flights and cars have been stranded along highways. Travelers crossing the Cascade Mountain Range dividing our state of Washington recently experienced some delays as the roads were being cleared. Also, the cold weather and fresh snows making the skiers and snowboarders happy were not good news for the daffodil growers of our region who were having to wait for the afternoon thaws to pick the flowers lest they bruise the stems in the process.
On the weather page of one of our area news stations (KOMO 4) was the statement: "Some people love snow, some people hate it. But your opinion doesn't really matter, it is coming for us all." The reality is that it does not matter what our plans are, the weather will be what it is. However, a little preparation for the variable possibilities helps to make it through.
Consider the coming of our Lord. It does not matter whether He is loved or hated, He has come and is coming again. Regardless of personal opinion there is A DAY COMING FOR US ALL! (2 Corinthians 5:10)
In Paul's second letter to Timothy we read. . .
"(7) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (8) Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, WILL AWARD TO ME ON THAT DAY, and not only to me but ALSO TO ALL WHO HAVE LOVED HIS APPEARING." (2 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)
A DAY is coming and come it will regardless of loving it, hating it, or being prepared. It will come in accordance with the timing of God's plan. To truly love the Lord moves us to be prepared for THAT DAY. In view of it "we make it our aim to please him." (2 Corinthians 5:9 ESV) May we continue with endurance to the end and so be saved (Matthew 10:22) as we encourage others to do the same.
Have a great day LIVING PREPARED FOR THE DAY GOD HAS SAID WILL COME!

Gift Of Gab?
The story has been told how at a banquet honoring Thomas Edison, the man who introduced him listed his many inventions, dwelling at length on the talking machine. When the aged inventor rose to speak, he gently smiled and said, "I thank the gentleman for his kind remarks, but I must insist upon a correction. God invented the talking machine. I only invented the first one that can be shut off!"
Solomon wrote. . .
"(27) WHOEVER RESTRAINS HIS WORDS HAS KNOWLEDGE, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. (28) Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent." (Proverbs 17:27-28 ESV)
How true it is some don't know when to cut off the flow. Some are known to possess as their gift, the "gift of gab." However, one with this gift may not necessarily be a conversationalist. Do we want to be listened to or do we merely want to get our statements told. Real communicating is when we have a message that is heard and understood. May we use wisdom in the use of conversation in our daily lives. Though the words may at times be few, making them worthwhile increases the chance of others being willing to listen. May God's wisdom be made evident through our conversations.
Have a great day USING GOD'S GIFT OF SPEECH IN BENEFICIAL WAYS!

In Good Time!
There are many things we long for now. Situations we just want to get through and over with. We get eager. We get anxious. So many times we can hardly wait, but how often we are reminded that waiting is a part of life. Since this is true we need to LEARN PATIENCE. And the manner in which PATIENCE is learned and developed is by having it exercised. Oh, how often it is put to the test and the passing of time does not always seem good in our own estimation of things. However, maybe instead of our saying "In good time" we ought to be mindful of saying "In God's time" it will all work out. He is the One Who has all of life in view and we need to grow to trust Him more!
James exhorted. . .
"(7) BE PATIENT, therefore, brothers, UNTIL THE COMING OF THE LORD SEE HOW THE FARMER WAITS for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains." (James 5:7 ESV)
Traveling from place to place we have often had to exercise PATIENCE moving slowly along a long stretch of highway under road repair. However, what a welcoming sight to see a sign posted reading, "End Of Construction. Thank You For Your Patience." Perhaps such a posting would be appropriate for the end our life's journey here on earth: "Thank You For Your Patience!" At that time the life will have been lived. Many lessons will have been learned. The process of maturing (physically and spiritually) will have taken place and life's roadwork will be left behind. In God's good time He will have brought us through it and the time will have come to be brought into the perfection of Heaven.
May we be PATIENT as we follow on through this life's journey. Just as the farmer knows the fruit from their labor takes time and exercises PATIENCE through the seasons, let us remain PATIENT through all the seasons of our life as we look toward the eternal blessings we will reap from our steadfast relationship with the Lord.
Have a great day LOOKING FOR THE GOOD IN GOD'S TIME!

Well Off Indeed!
Sometimes the world pities the one who ought to be noted and honored. Though we should in no way trivialize the poverty some live in and ought to be willing to help as we are able, it is sometimes the poor who are actually rich while the wealthy are sadly living in a poor condition. There is more than one way to be impoverished; not just that which may be associated with economics but also with spirituality.
Solomon stated. . .
"BETTER IS A POOR PERSON WHO WALKS IN HIS INTEGRITY than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool." (Proverbs 19:1 ESV)
And later on we read. . .
"BETTER IS A POOR MAN WHO WALKS IN HIS INTEGRITY than a rich man who is crooked in his ways." (Proverbs 28:6 ESV)
Rather than a "poor rich person" one can be BETTER OFF being "a rich poor person". In fact, it is possible for the poor individual to be MORALLY AND SPIRITUALLY SUPERIOR to an individual with great wealth. Young people, keep this in mind as you begin setting your goals for life. Those who are older, let us keep this in mind whenever we are reevaluating our goals and surveying life accomplishments. Paul encouraged Timothy to exhort the wealthy toward being rich is good works. (1 Timothy 6:18)
Remember, Jesus stated. . .
"BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:3 ESV)
Yes, how blessed we are when we acknowledge our spiritual need and continue to focus on Christ for it to be met. Through such a humble approach to life we stand to gain the riches of an eternal kingdom that lasts long beyond this realm here. Rather than pitied, we become the privileged ones! Living with INTEGRITY among men and HOLINESS before God is the path to what is of the greatest value to possess.
Have a great day BEING PROPERLY POOR AND RIGHTEOUSLY RICH!

Worthy Of Trust!
Paul, writing to the young evangelist Timothy, declared. . .
"(15) THE SAYING IS TRUSTWORTHY and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. (16) But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life." (1 Timothy 1:15-16 ESV)
What was the TRUSTWORTHY saying? Was it that Jesus came into the world to save sinners? Or was it that Paul was the foremost of sinners? I think actually both in Paul's view! Can you hear him saying, "Trust me, it's all true!" He knew what His life had been and he knew the power of God's forgiveness and grace. It was in light of that reality he assured others they could receive the same blessing. The great encouragement of salvation in Christ is the TRUSTWORTHINESS of the power of His blood to deal with even the foremost or worst of sinners.
May we never think we have stayed away so long or strayed so far that we can't return to the embrace of His grace. (That's part of the message of the lost son in Luke 15.) Also, may we continue to hold that message of hope out to others who may have led themselves to believe all that is left for them is deep despair. Paul pointed to his own life as an example of God's desire and ability to save. The adequate means of salvation has been fulfilled in Christ for everyone who will turn and submit to His Will. Paul stated this TRUSTWORTHY saying deserves our "full acceptance". So let us accept the TRUSTWORTHINESS of God's provision that brings us hope, peace, and eternal glory. Trust me, we need it. Trust me, He will provide it.
Have a great day BELIEVING THE ONE ETERNALLY WORTHY OF OUR TRUST!

Consistent Compliance!
My wife works in the health care industry. One of the things that drives her crazy is when she sees proper procedure not being followed. It is important because of the possibility of transferring bacteria and infection from one person to another and thus place health at risk. It is not only her own health, but the health of others of which she is mindful.
When it comes to Christian living we need to remain mindful of following God's Will because souls are at risk. Everyone's life is an example whether that be a good one or bad. Remaining aware others are watching and may follow IN OUR STEPS should encourage us to be mindful of the example we are setting. Also, knowing how serious God is with regard to leading others astray (note Matthew 18:6; Luke 17:1-2) ought to impress us with this need. However, we may rightly acknowledge our example and that of others is not always very consistent. We struggle and fall short of the standard we have been called to follow. But following that standard is to continue to be our aim. Even Paul wisely stated, "Be imitators of me, AS I AM OF CHRIST." (1 Corinthians 11:1) To be the most consistent example we can be our focus must remain on JESUS, the greatest and most consistent example God has provided.
Even as Jesus acknowledged the coming cross, He stated. . .
"(28) So Jesus said to them, 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. (29) And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I ALWAYS DO THE THINGS THAT ARE PLEASING TO HIM.' " (John 8:28-29 ESV)
Three important things for us to center our own lives on can be drawn from this passage. First, our life must be based on the authority of the Father and not that of the world or our own desires. Secondly, it is the Father's Will and Word that needs to be on our lips. Thirdly, it is the Father Whom we are to seek to please above all else and at all times. More consistent compliance of life comes when we make life all about what God desires.
When life is most challenging it is easy to find ourselves faltering. However, Jesus gave us the example to "FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS" (1 Peter 2:21) even in the face of suffering. It can be challenging. We will find ourselves struggling at times. However, keeping our focus on Jesus -- our most consistent example -- the more success we will experience.
Have a great day LIVING FOR GOD FOR OUR SAKE AND THE SAKE OF OTHERS!

Growing Up!
A baby is born and its every need is looked out for by its parents. However, there is rejoicing as the child is seen to be DOING MORE AND MORE themselves. From watching the eyes begin to take things in, the little squeaks and giggles, rolling over, then crawling, and eventually walking and talking and running; all revealing growth processes are at work. The development of being ABLE TO DO MORE is seen as a sign of good physical health. It is the expectation or testing may be done to determine what is wrong.
A child begins school. Letters and numbers are learned with simple words sounded out and simple math equations solved. Eventually algebraic equations and other complex mathematics are championed, thought provoking essays are written, speeches are given, and mature social interaction takes place. Once again the development of PROCESSING MORE information and putting it to use is recognized as a sign of good intellectual and social health. It is the expectation.
Though the words of Jesus to the church at Thyatira would go on to urge them away from tolerating some things they should not have, still, there was growth acknowledged where we read. . .
"(19) I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that YOUR LATTER WORKS EXCEED THE FIRST." (Revelation 2:19 ESV)
Though there was still room for growth (as there is for all of us) this was a sign of SPIRITUAL PROGRESS being made. DOING MORE at this point than had been done before was a sign of healthy spiritual growth. This also is the expectation. (i.e. Hebrews 5:12) Even in the sermon on the mount Jesus noted rather than merely following the status quo of the world, His expectation was that of DOING MORE than others. (Matthew 5:47) It is progress marking good spiritual health; becoming more and more like our Heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:48)
Note John's prayer for Gaius where he wrote. . .
"(2) Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, AS IT GOES WELL WITH YOUR SOUL." (3 John 2 ESV)
Though the prayer related to Gaius' entire being, the emphasis was on his soul; his spiritual wellbeing! Is that where our focus rests? Being healthy! Growing! DOING MORE than before! Progressing spiritually! May that progress continue in the life of each one of us.
Have a great day PROGRESSING IN THE GOOD HEALTH OF THE SOUL!

Finest Craftmanship!
I have an Appalachian dulcimer (also known as a mountain dulcimer) which has 4 strings (tuned depending on song played with 2 strings being fingered while the other 2 serving as drone strings). My violins each have 4 strings. I have a 6 string guitar as well as a 12 string. My hammer dulcimer has 50 strings. We used to have a piano (its been replaced by an electronic keyboard) with 88 keys, which means it had 88 strings inside. (Yes, a piano is technically a string instrument.) Besides the sound of these instruments being appreciated, their craftsmanship can be as well. The right kind of wood, the wood's shaping, the varnish used, and the manner in which a stringed instrument is put together (whether 4 strings or 88) makes it beautiful to look at as well as to hear. There is balance and symmetry to an instrument and its acoustic soundness is what the time in the crafting process is all about. So WONDROUSLY MADE! However, what of all of that without the EAR TO HEAR and appreciate the sound?
I recently came across a reference to the ACOUSTIC MARVEL we know as the ear. It was noted that the inner ear is like a keyboard with 15,000 keys; the number of different tones the ear is able to detect. Checking the internet for more information on the ear I found that the human ear is able to hear a frequency range from 20 to 15,000 Hertz. However, in addition to the importance of distinguishing tones, the ear also serves to control equilibrium for the body. Therefore, THE EAR CREATED BY GOD IS A DUAL PURPOSE INSTRUMENT. (This is aside from ears also being useful for holding a pencil and helping support eyeglasses and even a hat.)
The psalmist David wrote. . .
"(13) For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. (14) I praise you, for I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE. WONDERFUL ARE YOUR WORKS; my soul knows it very well." (Psalm 139:13-14 ESV)
Yes, so VERY WONDERFULLY AND WONDROUSLY MADE! Though the ear is only one small aspect of the wondrous body God created, may we appreciate HIS CRAFTMANSHIP, utilizing our ears in ways that glorify the Creator and enhance our relationship with Him. That includes listening to His message.
Have a great day KEEPING THE EAR IN TUNE WITH ITS MAKER!

Joyful Expectation!
Satan takes delight in getting us to center our focus on the negative side of things that IN CHRIST ought to encourage us. He rejoices when death is seen as the end; as merely some inescapable tragedy of life. Yes, people do die tragically. Even those who die simply because the body has worn out are mourned for the void they leave in family relationships. However, hope in CHRIST BRINGS COMFORT AND CONSOLATION. Jesus came to render the devil powerless over death and to deliver us from its fear. (Hebrews 2:14-15) It does not have a hold on us.
In Paul's view of death, he stated. . .
"(21) For to me to live is Christ, and TO DIE IS GAIN. (22) If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is TO DEPART AND BE WITH CHRIST, for that IS FAR BETTER." (Philippians 1:21-23)
Does that sound like a description of an inescapable tragedy? Though Paul recognized the great value of his service in ministry (Philippians 1:24-26), he lived with a joyful expectation of better things beyond this realm. The real tragedy is living without Christ while pursuing selfish ends. That opens the door for only a fearful expectation of judgment. (Hebrews 10:26-27) BECAUSE OF CHRIST, Paul lived with a joyful expectation toward death.
IN CHRIST, let us not allow a view of greater things to come to escape us. IN CHRIST we can live a good life now. In fact the good life is actually found IN CHRIST. And that is life lived in preparation for what He went to prepare for our eternal existence.
Have a great day LIVING IN ANTICIPATION OF AN ETERNITY WITH CHRIST!

Sides of Silence!
Silence is something with which we sometimes struggle. There are times we don't know how to use it when perhaps it would be a good opportunity for meditation and prayer. We may also at times wonder about the silence of others; what are they thinking or feeling? Are they sad about something or are they upset with us? Though we may not always know exactly what is behind silence, at times when we are not sure, that doesn't mean we have to say something anyway. If we have nothing to say we should not -- like some -- insist on saying it!
King Demaratus (king of Sparta from around 515 until 491 BC) is noted as stating --when asked whether in the company of others he was silent through folly or wisdom -- "A fool cannot be silent." To be silent would be the wisest thing for a fool to do. As I have heard stated many times, "It is better to keep your mouth shut and let people wonder if you're a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Solomon noted that "Even A FOOL who keeps SILENT is CONSIDERED WISE; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent."(Proverbs 17:28 ESV) The problem is the foolish often don't know when to keep silent and therefore they insist on speaking and revealing their foolishness.
As Job was not being provided much comfort by his friends, he responded to their counsel by stating. . .
"(4) As for you, you whitewash with lies; worthless physicians are you all. (5) OH THAT YOU WOULD KEEP SILENT, AND IT WOULD BE YOUR WISDOM!" (Job 13:4-5 ESV)
Reading the statements of Job's friends, they seemed to have thought they were speaking the mind of God while in actuality did not know what they were talking about. They were in error as to their suppositions of both God and Job's situation. Job's friends were perhaps the most comfort when they sat with him in silence for the first seven days together. (Job 2:13) In the end three of Job's friends -- Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar -- were rebuked by God and instructed to make offerings and have Job pray for them. (Job 42:7-9)
It is so easy for us to misspeak. Consider the categories of speech Paul noted when he wrote. . .
"(20) Let NO CORRUPTING TALK come out of your mouths, BUT ONLY such as is GOOD FOR BUILDING UP, as FIT'S THE OCCASION, that it may GIVE GRACE TO THOSE WHO HEAR." (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)
Sometimes people just need us to listen to them. At times they may merely need a sounding board as they talk through their situation, rather than our advise. Then when we do speak, may it be words that encourage and build up as is fitting for the situation. Our wise speaking will then complement the wisdom of our silence. May God help us with the balance.
Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE TIME TO SPEAK AND TIME TO BE SILENT!

Already An App For That!
It seems there is a new "App" (application) being made for something all the time. So many things can be easily downloaded and utilized on today's mobile devices. This past week the news (both newspaper and other media) reported on the $1.99 "Confession App" for the IPAD or iPhone. It was reportedly seen by the designers as a means to spur Catholics back into the habit of repentance through the use of their mobile devices. However, it apparently did not have the sanction of that group as being sufficient.
We should all recognize the need to keep the heart open to confession and repentance so that the blessing of forgiveness can be received. (1 John 1:9) However, THERE IS ALREADY AN APP FOR THAT! In the confessing to and praying for one another (James 5:16), in Christ God has already provided the means of forgiveness.
In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus he encouraged. . .
"(7) In him we have REDEMPTION THROUGH HIS BLOOD, the FORGIVENESS OF OUR TRESPASSES, according to the riches of his grace," (Ephesians 1:7 ESV)
JESUS' BLOOD has been given and -- APPLIED to our life -- we have forgiveness. HIS BLOOD is powerful enough to cleanse us from all sin. (1 John 1:7) By HIS BLOOD He has freed us from our sins (Revelation 1:5) and brought us near to God. (Ephesians 2:13) It is by HIS BLOOD we are justified and saved from God's wrath. (Romans 5:9) In our continued relationship with Jesus that continued blessing is ours! (1 John 1:7)
Praise God for the adequacy of the power of JESUS' BLOOD as He stands as the "advocate with the Father" (1 John 2:1), mediating on our behalf. As Paul noted Jesus as the "one mediator between God and men" (1 Timothy 2:5) may we rejoice in being able to turn to Him any time of the day or night with a penitent heart to receive the forgiveness we need.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE SUFFICIENCY PROVIDED IN CHRIST!

A Fashion Statement!
Are your clothes "in" or "out". Do you dress to make a "fashion statement"? Is the logo or tag on your clothing an important issue to you? Do you feel what you wear says something about the "real" you?
At the least, your clothing says something about your tastes. However, a monkey in a three-piece suit is still a monkey whether the suit was purchased at a tux shop or a thrift store. Still, there is clothing which does say something about us. There is a wardrobe which -- in a real sense -- makes a huge FASHION STATEMENT. Paul, in his letter to the church at Colosse, stated. . .
"(12) PUT ON then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, COMPASSION, KINDNESS, HUMILITY, MEEKNESS, and PATIENCE, (13) bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. (14) And above all these PUT ON LOVE, WHICH BINDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER in perfect harmony." (Colossians 3:12-14 ESV)
The "PUT ON" in verse 12 could also be properly translated "CLOTHE" yourselves. The FASHION STATEMENT such attire from God's wardrobe makes is considered out of style by some today. However, in God's eyes these garments have always been and always will be in fashion. In fact, to wear them is to be as best dressed as possible. These garments are fit for any occasion. These garments won't clash with each other either. These garments are also appropriate in any culture. Beautiful garments of compassion, kindness, humility, meekness (or gentleness), and patience -- all held together by love. We could perhaps think of the love either as the stitching or the belt that holds it all in place.
If the label is important, then consider the versatility, beauty, and style of God's brand. Let us be clothed with that which bears His label.
Have a great day BEING AMONG THE BEST DRESSED!

Love Relationship!
Today is celebrated by many as "Valentine's Day". Generally the focus has become one of school children exchanging cute cards and adults giving flowers, candy, or perhaps sharing a candlelight dinner with the one they love. A recurring expression associated with this day is the simple statement "Be Mine!" Some of the acknowledgments of these loving relationships may be anything from a simple gift or gesture to something quite lavish.
John wrote. . .
"See what KIND OF LOVE THE FATHER HAS GIVEN TO US, that we should BE CALLED CHILDREN OF GOD; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him." (1 John 3:1)
Where the English Standard Version has the word "given" (from the Greek "didomi"), other translations use the expression "bestowed" (KJV, NKJV, ASV, NASB) or "lavished" (NIV). God's love has been lavishly extended in so many ways. The word translated "kind" (or "manner" in other translations) is from the Greek "potapas" which first refers to "from what country" and then "what sort or quality". It is not a love from this world, but the exotic love of Heaven that has granted us the privilege of being GOD'S CHILDREN.
God's desire is for humanity to respond to His Divine plea to "Be Mine!" He wants us as His very own. (1 Peter 2:9) And it is through Christ we have been provided this privilege. (John 1:12) Though we ought to develop genuine loving relationships with others, still, more than being someone's valentine may we rejoice in being known as CHILDREN OF GOD! Let us remain His!
Have a great day LIVING IN A MANNER THAT CLEARLY REVEALS WE ARE HIS!

Love Songs!
This past Thursday I had my monthly performance at an assisted living facility here in Port Townsend, Washington. Since Valentine's Day was coming up, most of the music I played and sang followed a theme of love; most serious and well focused, but a couple funny songs as well. This group always seems eager for my return, so they are a fun audience for which to perform and interact.
During most of my performances I play a wide variety of types of music. Especially with my violin I can play music reflecting a wide range of moods; blues, Celtic, classical, fiddle, jazzy, lively, mournful, etc. And the lyrics of songs I sing also convey a variety of messages. This audience also enjoys hearing some of the songs I have written for my wife during our years prior to marriage and since. Though I generally select music I can believe in, those songs are especially meaningful every time they are performed.
When it comes to music, people look for different things and respond in a variety of ways. Some are really MOVED BY music while others may enjoy it and then simply MOVE ON. Such also reflects a varied response to God's messengers and message as well.
In Ezekiel we read. . .
"(30) 'As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, 'COME, and HEAR WHAT THE WORD IS THAT COMES FROM THE LORD.' (31) And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and THEY HEAR what you say BUT they WILL NOT DO it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. (32) And behold, YOU ARE TO THEM LIKE ONE WHO SINGS LUSTFUL SONGS WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE AND PLAYS WELL ON AN INSTRUMENT, for THEY HEAR WHAT YOU SAY, BUT THEY WILL NOT DO IT. (33) When this comes -- and come it will! -- then they will know that a prophet has been among them.' " (Ezekiel 33:30-33 ESV)
The New Living Translations reads, "like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice". Entertained, but NOT MOVED! Hearing, but not heeding! Noting the talent, but not taking the message!
What about us? What marks our response? Are we MOVED BY the message of God to heed His warnings and abide in His Will or do we enjoy a good lesson and simply MOVE ON to live life the way we want? God's message is not just another song! It is the theme for life now and for eternity. How sad for God to speak such wonderful words and perform such loving acts on our behalf, only to have it all rejected.
God's message is one of love. It is "Good News" if we will accept it and properly apply it to our life. May we remain open to living with His song in our heart to motivate us through life.
Have a great day LISTENING, LEARNING, AND THEN LIVING GOD'S LIFE MESSAGE!

A Landslide!
Landslides. How do we view them? Well, perhaps it all depends on how the term is applied. Some landslides create disaster while others provide what people really desire. Heavy rains can cause hillsides to give way covering roadways, pushing houses off foundations, or covering whole communities. However, a landslide in an election points to an overwhelming majority voting a particular way.
What a contrast in usage; from a mess to an OVERWHELMING VICTORY. Not a close and almost indecisive result that might be challenged, but a STANDOUT VICTORY making the choice of the voters crystal clear.
What a mess people can make of their lives without the Lord. In fact it can be even more devastating than a mudslide because it could have eternal consequences. However, with the Lord we can have OVERWHELMING VICTORY over the things that challenge us in this life!
After running through a long list of the "mud" with which the world can almost overwhelm us (Romans 8:35-36), Paul went on to emphatically declare. . .
"(37) No, in all these things we are MORE THAN CONQUERORS THROUGH HIM WHO LOVED US. (38) For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, (39) nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:37-39 ESV)
In his first letter to the church at Corinth, Paul also noted our VICTORY over sin and separation from God where we read. . .
"(56) The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, who gives us THE VICTORY THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST." (1 Corinthians 15:56-57 ESV)
"MORE THAN CONQUERORS!" VICTORS THROUGH CHRIST! It doesn't matter how the rest of the world may vote; what their life choices may be. It is the choice on the Lord's side that makes the OVERWHELMING DIFFERENCE! As Paul asked, "What then shall we say to these things? IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?" (Romans 8:31 ESV) With the Lord it is a "landslide vote" to His glory and our favor! May our life remain connected to Him and His Will!
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY OVERWHELMING VICTORY IN CHRIST!

Posted Reminder!
I love "sticky notes"; those square pieces of paper with a sticky strip on the back so a note or reminder can be posted where it will be seen when needed. My newest laptop computer even has a "sticky note" function that allows me to place those squares in my choice of colors right on the computer's desktop screen where I see them every time I sit down to work.
Where reminders are posted or printed can be very significant. Posted messages may be warnings, may provide guidance, or may simply serve as a ready reminder. The posted message on a refrigerator door -- "Once on the lips. Forever on the hips." -- may remind a dieter to think about what they choose from within. "Click It or Ticket" reminds one to put on their seatbelt when driving and thus avoiding a ticket. "Drive Hammered. Get Nailed." warns against driving after drinking or be pulled over and pay the penalty for the bad choice. And there are many others that may come to mind relative to life and its choices.
There is one particular notice I find quite interesting because of where it is placed. It is the expression "IN GOD WE TRUST" imprinted on some of our United States coinage and paper currency. The motto was first used on the two-cent coin in 1864, followed by other coinage and eventually progressively to paper currency from 1957 to 1966. Though there are some in this country who have worked to get those words removed, with the trust many place in their possessions and wealth, I see those words as an excellent reminder of where our trust ought to rest every time money is used.
Jesus noted how wealth can become one's master when He exhorted a choice that needed to be made. We read. . .
"(24) NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. YOU CANNOT SERVE GOD AND MONEY." (Matthew 6:24 ESV)
The Greek translated "money" in this verse is "mammon", which was a Semitic word for money or possessions. A choice must be made. Both cannot be served without conflict of interest.
Paul also exhorted. . .
"(17) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, NOR TO SET THEIR HOPES ON THE UNCERTAINTY OF RICHES, BUT ON GOD, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy." (1 Timothy 6:17 ESV)
The choice: uncertain riches or God? Which is it? Where have we placed our trust? What or Who is Master over our life? Is it truly IN GOD WE TRUST or is our trust divided? History has revealed again and again how uncertain worldly wealth can be. Remember God cannot be moth-eaten, rust, or be stolen by thieves. (note Matthew 6:19-20) He was, is and will be! May our complete and full trust remain in Him.
Have a great day KEEPING LIFE'S CONFIDENCE IN GOD BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE!

Listen Up!
To "LISTEN" is defined as making a conscious effort TO HEAR or TO PAY ATTENTION. With all that is going on in life we may be surrounded by many audible sounds, but to what are we truly LISTENING? What are we really HEARING? What is it we have turned our ears toward.
When Jesus told the parable of the sower, it was sandwiched between the exhortation to "LISTEN" and "HEAR." We read. . .
"(3) 'LISTEN! A sower went out to sow.' " (Mark 4:3 ESV)
. . . and following the parable. . .
"(9) And he said, 'He who has ears TO HEAR, LET him HEAR.'" (Mark 4:9 ESV)
In the Greek we go from "akouete" (vs.3) to "akouein akoueto" (vs.9). The "LISTEN" and the literal "TO HEAR LET HEAR" all come from "akouo", which is the usual word signifying "TO HEAR". Strong's Greek Lexicon defines it as "to be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf" and "to hear." Are we capable of HEARING? Then to what are we LISTENING?
How appropriate for the telling of this particular parable to begin and end with such an exhortation. It is a parable describing variations in the character of hearts; degrees of receptivity and a lack of it. God gave us ears and minds, but it is up to us how we will use them. How we are putting our HEARING and LISTENING skills to work is so important.
If we HEAR -- really listening to what God is saying through His Word -- and accept, our life will produce fruit (Mark 4:8 & 20) in accordance with the truth of God's message. May our ears be lifted up above the noise of this realm to take in the teachings from Heaven.
Have a great day ALLOWING THE EARS GOD GAVE US TO WORK FOR US!

Substance Source!
Sometimes we may find ourselves struggling in our perception of the lives of others. How often in life are those who are well off honored and envied while the impoverished are looked down upon. The view seems to be that one is better off than the other, but in reality which one truly is? Could the impoverished actually be in a better position than the wealthy? Wealth has its challenges. (i.e. 1 Timothy 6:9-10) Is a distinction made that ought not to be made? (note James 2:1-7)
In one of the psalms of David we read. . .
"(9) Those of low estate are but A BREATH; those of high estate are A DELUSION; in the balances they go up; they are TOGETHER LIGHTER THAN A BREATH. (10) Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them." (Psalm 62:9-10 ESV)
Those of low estate (the poor) or those of "high estate" (the wealthy) are noted as "but a breath" and "a delusion" respectively. Which is the better focus? Which would we desire to characterize our life? Then the focus turned to both together being "lighter than a breath." Neither are noted as having much substance; at least not in and of themselves relative to what they either lack or possess. Note where the TRUST, HOPE and HEART were not to be centered! Anytime the TRUST is centered in ourselves and what we possess, our focus is out of balance.
Where the TRUST is centered. That's what it is really all about. And the sooner in life we recognize this, the better off we will be as we press on in life and begin setting our life goals.
Backing up a few verses we read. . .
"(5) For GOD ALONE, O my soul, wait in silence, for MY HOPE IS FROM HIM. (6) He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. (7) On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. (8)TRUST IN HIM AT ALL TIMES, O people; POUR OUT YOUR HEART BEFORE HIM; God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:5-8 ESV)
Notice how David's focus was centered in God. That's where stability for his life was found. God was the source of his salvation, his glory, and safety. Therefore David urged others to TRUST IN GOD AT ALL TIMES! It is to God to Whom we are to pour out our heart in prayer as we earnestly and sincerely seek His guidance and help to carry us through this life and into the glorious eternity He has prepared for us. It is God who breathed into man's nostrils the breathe of life (Genesis 2:7) Who can still breathe substance into our life today. May our daily life reflect how much OUR TRUST truly is in Him regardless of life status or situation.
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE HIGH LIFE GOD PROVIDES!

Maybe / Maybe Not!
"I wonder if it will sunshine today? Or maybe it is going to rain. But it could be a good day. But then again, the wind may begin to blow hard. The sun isn't shining very brightly through the window -- I wonder if it is clouding up? I think maybe I ought to just stay in bed."
Is that the picture of our motivation (or lack thereof)? Are we ever hesitant to start out on something because we wonder about all the possibilities?
Solomon wrote. . .
"(4) He who observes the wind WILL NOT SOW, and he who regards the clouds WILL NOT REAP." (Ecclesiastes 11:4 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads: "If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done."
The point is not hard to miss! Some allow all the "what ifs" or possible circumstances to keep them from launching out into anything. Rather than focusing on things from the standpoint of "conviction" they focus on everything that brings to mind "caution." I'm not saying we should throw caution completely to the wind, but we must realize how easy it is to allow things to keep us from STEPPING OUT IN FAITH and undertaking what the Lord desires us to do.
Solomon went on to say. . .
"(5) As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. (6) In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good." (Ecclesiastes 11:5-6 ESV)
Most Hebrew manuscripts for verse 5 read "As you do not know the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb."
Since we don't always know how things are going to go and which specific actions may succeed the most or even if they all may be equally good -- STEP OUT IN FAITH AND LET GOD BRING THE FINAL RESULTS. Remember, God is not bound by circumstances. Nor is He bound by "what ifs"! If we waited until we had it all figured out or our "ducks in a row" we would never get anything done! Be comforted that we don't have to have it all figured out. That is God's work, for He is the One Who has the vision and the wisdom to do it as we allow Him to work through us. May we not become so focused on the circumstances and things we cannot change that we allow no room in our lives for God to do His work as we WALK BY FAITH. Let our actions be tied more to conviction than caution!
Have a great day PROMPTED BY THE CONVICTION OF GOD'S WILL!

Answers Still The Same!
During some devotional and prayer time with several men of our congregation, one of them mentioned how the same problems and challenges of mankind have continued to come up throughout history. Though technology and the level of living have changed, mankind's basic needs and troubles remain the same. Should it surprise us that wise Solomon even stated with regard to life lived in general in this world. . .
"(9) What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is NOTHING NEW under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:9 ESV)
I pointed out there is great encouragement in this fact about mankind and life. If the problems are the same then that means THE ANSWERS are STILL THE SAME!
Some want to say the Bible -- God's Word -- is out-dated and old fashioned. They want to view it as yesterday's news. The truth is the Gospel is not "old news", but rather is still "Good News" to meet mankind's continual struggle with sin which is related to so many of this world's problems. And besides the truths linked to eternal salvation, the Bible continues to be the best guide for all of living. It presents a boost to our self-esteem since we realize we are not some blob that climbed out of the goo or some cosmic accident that occurred at some point in time, but instead were created by God in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). The Bible is also the best guide for interpersonal relationships as it directs against selfishness and toward the valuing of others.
May we find comfort that GOD'S ANSWERS are still the best. After all, since He is the One who got life started in the first place, why shouldn't He be the One with the answers on how to go through it? May we continue to seek HIS ANSWERS to life's questions!
Have a great day GUIDED BY HE WHO STILL HAS THE ANSWERS!

Wasting No Time!
As Mark began his Gospel, he did not give as much detail about some things as the other Gospel accounts do. There is a striking brevity in his record of some of the events noted in the first chapter. Still, what he wrote parallels the same events covered by the other Gospel writers. However, there is something else in that first chapter of Mark that recently caught my attention.
We read. . .
"(12) The Spirit IMMEDIATELY drove him out into the wilderness. (13) And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him." (Mark 1:12-13 ESV)
It was time for things to begin and began they did. In verse eighteen we pick up the reading after the Lord's encounter and calling of Peter and Andrew, and read . . .
"(18) And IMMEDIATELY they left their nets and followed him. (19) And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. (20) And IMMEDIATELY he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him." (Mark 1:18-20 ESV)
Jesus IMMEDIATELY began developing a following. Peter and Andrew IMMEDIATELY followed Jesus (though John's account does give an earlier encounter; John 1:40-42) and Jesus IMMEDIATELY called James and John who also followed. Then we next read of Jesus IMMEDIATELY beginning his teaching in a synagogue. (Mark 1:21)
Though the other Gospels do have this similar expression, this first chapter alone has it eight times. (Mark 1:12,18,20,21,23,29,30,42) Some of our English translations do not include it or have the expression "at once" or "without delay" or "as soon as", but the Greek word "euthus" is there all eight times. It is a word noted in several Greek dictionaries and lexicons I consulted as literally meaning "straight", "straightway", "forthwith", or "at once". The English word "IMMEDIATELY" appears to be a good translation; a word that implies importance and urgency in the action.
Jesus did not waste time getting involved when it came time for His ministry to begin. He went STRAIGHT to the opportunities of connecting with others. When opportunities IMMEDIATELY arose, he took advantage of them. And what Jesus did had a DIRECT IMMEDIATE IMPACT on lives in practical ways.
Is such an energy and focus associated with our own life? Though we don't possess the same miraculous power of Jesus, we can still IMPACT the lives of others in powerful ways when we surrender to serving His Will. EAGERLY STEPPING FORWARD rather than allowing such opportunities to slip by will not be a waste of time. It will glorify the Lord and bring benefit to others.
Have a great day GOING FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES THE LORD PROVIDES!

Stature That Matters!
When Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel, there was something about his stature that was noted. We read. . .
"(23) Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was TALLER THAN ANY OF THE PEOPLE FROM HIS SHOULDERS UPWARD. (24) And Samuel said to all the people, 'DO YOU SEE HIM WHOM THE LORD HAS CHOSEN? There IS NONE LIKE HIM AMONG ALL THE PEOPLE.' And all the people shouted, 'Long live the king!'" (1 Samuel 10:23-24 ESV)
He stood out! Saul stood tall! He was head and shoulders above the rest of the people of Israel. It was a stature everyone could see. Sadly it did not take long for Saul to fall; following his own presumptuousness rather than God.
After being rejected by God due to Saul's unfaithfulness (1 Samuel 15:23 & 26), Samuel was sent to the household of Jesse. When Samuel saw Eliab -- the oldest of Jesse's sons -- he just knew this had to be the one. (1 Samuel 16:6) However, it was actually the youngest (1 Samuel 16:11) God had in mind. This time is was not the one who stood out, but rather the one who had to be gone out after and brought in.
From tall Saul to a young shepherd boy. A contrast between one who stood out in a crowd with one who stood out with the flocks. Perhaps David was the shortest of all his brothers. Standing Saul and David together, who would we have picked?
The key to stature in God's eyes is noted where God told Samuel. . .
"(7) But the LORD said to Samuel, 'DO NOT LOOK ON HIS APPEARANCE OR ON THE HEIGHT OF HIS STATURE, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but THE LORD LOOKS ON THE HEART.'" (1 Samuel 16:7 ESV)
While man gets out his tape measure and sizes up the height or muscles of a man, God puts His measure around THE HEART. Though Saul had stood tall among others, how sad he did not continue STANDING TALL SPIRITUALLY! David was the one described by God as "a man AFTER HIS OWN HEART." (1 Samuel 13:14) God moved him from shepherding sheep to shepherding a nation. (2 Samuel 5:2)
It matters not whether we be short or tall, small or large, muscular or frail, etc. It is the stature of the HEART -- the submissive CHARACTER of one to the Will of God -- by which God measures a life. Is that where we are seeking to stand tall? May we accept His help in developing and maintaining a SPIRITUAL STATURE modeled after GOD'S OWN HEART!
Have a great day STANDING TALL FROM THE INSIDE OUT!

My Hero!
People who save others are quickly labeled "heroes". They are the people who run into burning buildings, rescue from a crashed vehicle seconds before explosion, jump into rushing waters, rescue from the side of a cliff, search through the cold or night until finding someone who is lost, perform a delicate surgery that saves a life, etc. Such people are often HONORED with medals or plaques, special ceremonies, accolades, or innumerable "thank you"s. Saving others is a noble action and when acknowledged, the natural expectation seems to be that such individuals would not be treated poorly.
Jesus came -- as He Himself stated -- "TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST." (Luke 19:10) Aren't we thankful He did? Do we rejoice at the difference His coming has made for our life now and for the eternal hope that is ours? Think of those whose lives were dynamically touched during the three short years of His ministry on earth. He saved from demons, disability, disease, and death; miracles that though they could not be denied were sometimes grumbled against because of when they took place. (i.e. Matthew 12:10-14) Such should have convinced both those who experienced and those who witnessed them of Who Jesus was. (John 10:25 & 38) However, it seemed no matter how many miracles or signs were performed there were still those who refused to believe. (John 12:37)
Consider one of the statements made toward Jesus as He hung on the cross. We read. . .
"(41) So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, (42) 'HE SAVED OTHERS; HE CANNOT SAVE HIMSELF. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him." (Matthew 27:41-42 ESV)
What a combination of statements; acknowledging what He did for others that could only be done by Him and wondering why He could not save Himself! Here was just one more opportunity for these leaders to insult Jesus when they should have honestly acknowledged what He had done and HONORED Him instead.
Praise God for Jesus' humble, merciful, and sacrificial spirit on behalf of others. Praise the Lord for having not used His power to come down from the cross in an "I'll show you" fashion toward those who challenged Him that day, but instead remained there offering Himself for our sins and eventually revealing the power over death through His resurrection from the dead. May we continue to HONOR the One Who has saved us from our sins. May that HONOR be clearly evident through the manner in which we live our daily lives.
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE SAVING POWER OF JESUS!

Awesome Word!
The word "awesome" seems to be used fairly freely today. It is used to describe anything from a death defying stunt to a song on a CD. People are referred to as being awesome because of their availability to help when needed or based on infatuation thought to be love. I've even been told I am awesome and I'm only me. Are some of the ways in which this word is used today not actually awesome? Has the use of the word caused a loss of a sense of awe toward what is truly to the utmost awesome?
The word awesome according to the English usage is a "mixture of wonder and dread: a feeling of amazement and respect mixed with fear that is often coupled with a feeling of personal insignificance or powerlessness." [source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.] Have we retained a sense of WONDER about that which should be really awe inspiring? Albert Einstein is noted as stating, "He who can no longer pause to wonder, is as good as dead." Perhaps such is the life that is no longer impressed by that which should be seen as IMPRESSIVE! Have we become so impressed with worldly things that we have ceased to be impressed with the things relative to God?
In the Psalms we read. . .
"(8) Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world STAND IN AWE OF HIM! (9) For HE SPOKE, AND IT CAME TO BE; he commanded, and it stood firm." (Psalm 33:8-9 ESV)
Later we read. . .
"(161) Princes persecute me without cause, but MY HEART STANDS IN AWE OF YOUR WORDS. (162) I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil. (163) I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law." (Psalm 119:161-163)
And eventually Jesus -- "THE WORD" in the "FLESH" (John 1:14) -- came onto life's scene and His actions struck many with amazement and awe because they had "seen extraordinary things." (Luke 5:26 ESV)
Considering these three together we should be impressed with how GOD'S WORD in either form -- spoken, written, or lived out in the flesh by the Son -- ought to be viewed as truly awesome. As we continue to accept His Word, let us allow its power to permeate our entire being and compel us to live in a manner that reveals God's awesome wisdom and power to live a godly life in the midst of an ungodly world. In this way we will be keeping the WONDER alive that may draw others to the acceptance of GOD'S POWERFUL WORD as well.
Have a great day BEING ALIVE TO THE WONDER OF GOD!

Don't Rub It In!
Some people are always looking to catch the mistakes of others. Sometimes they even find some strange delight in throwing those mistakes back in their face from time to time. Though there are times when error needs to be pointed out and directed from [i.e. Matthew 18:15-17; Luke 17:3-4; Galatians 6:1 (But even in these note the spirit in which it is to be done.)], most of the time we are all well aware of our shortcomings. Sometimes we have enough trouble putting the past behind us ourselves and certainly it is no help when others refuse to let us forget as we are trying to press on from where we are. What is needed is encouragement to press onward in the right direction rather than burdening with the past that can be learned from, but not changed.
Someone has urged, "When a friend makes a mistake, don't rub it in -- rub it out!!!"
Isn't that the type of friend we should be? Isn't that the type of friend we want and need? Well, is that not exactly the type of friend we have?
To a crowd gathered in Solomon's colonnade, Peter exhorted. . .
"(19) Repent therefore, and turn again, THAT YOUR SINS MAY BE BLOTTED OUT, (20) that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, (21) whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago." (Acts 3:19-21 ESV)
The Greek word translated "blotted out" is from "exaleipho" ("ek", out, and "aleipho" to wipe) and is used metaphorically "in the sense of removal, to wipe away, wipe off, obliterate." [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dict. Of N.T. Words] What refreshment that brings to life to know how adequately God deals with our sins as we turn our lives back toward Him and His Will. Let us also model HIS FORGIVING SPIRIT as we interact with others. Knowing how much we HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN ought to make it easier TO BE FORGIVING toward others. May A FORGIVING SPIRIT in our own life demonstrate our sincere appreciation for what we have received.
Have a great day BEING THE GODLY FRIEND OTHERS NEED!

Emergency Shelter!
When disasters in this world strike, shelter is sought in which to wait them ought. Sometimes following a disaster official temporary shelters are set up where people are able to go for medical aid, food and water, a place to sleep, and other supports. When people have lost everything to a disaster and there is nowhere else to go, such shelters are a lifesaver.
In Psalms we find this focus of faith . . .
"(1) GOD IS OUR REFUGE and strength, A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE. (2) Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, (3) though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling." (Psalm 46:1-3 ESV)
The psalmist's focus on GOD as a REFUGE and help in trouble took away the fear of what else might go on in the world. How much do we trust in God's awareness of all we experience in life and find peace in Him as our SHELTER OR REFUGE? Not a place to go to only after we have lost everything else, but an ever present help in life. Mountains may tremble, but God brings ETERNAL STABILITY to life. Worldly hopes may be washed away, but God's sustaining power can KEEP US AFLOAT.
GOD is the sustainer and ETERNAL LIFESAVER. May we remain under His loving care and support as our abiding REFUGE in the storms of life.
Have a great day ENJOYING SANCTUARY IN THE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD!
