Contentment!
The story has been told of a religious farmer who offered to give forty acres of rich farmland to anyone perfectly satisfied with what they had. When one man came to take the farmer up on his offer, he was asked, "Are you perfectly satisfied with what you have?" "Very much so," responded the eager and hopeful inquirer. The farmer then remarkably replied, "Then why do you want this land?"
When observing the lives of others, does it take long to note the signs of discontent? Always pursuing something else. Always wanting another thing. Quickly losing interest in what they have for something newer being advertised. Lives often filled with SO MUCH stuff, but marked by SO LITTLE happiness. This is in stark contrast to those who possess SO LITTLE while seeming to be filled with SO MUCH happiness. How strange?
We need to keep in mind Paul's exhortation. . .
"(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. (8) But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content." ( 1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV)
Paul went on to note some of the challenges and pain associated with the accumulation of wealth. It is too easy to become sidetrack from what is of greatest significance. The way much is amassed for this life almost makes it appear this life is viewed as all there is to our existence. However, there are no pockets in a shroud [burial garment] and I have yet to see a U-haul ® trailer being pulled behind a hearse. All the physical wealth and "stuff" we accumulate will be left to others.
Let us learn the "GAIN OF GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT." We ought to have a great sense of appreciation and gratitude for even the basic blessings we have received from God; food, clothing, and shelter. Whatever else we do possess, may we find ways to use it to the glory of God to further His purposes rather than merely satisfying our own selfish desires. Seeking to live for Him first will help keep the other aspects of life in perspective, thus enabling us to enjoy what we do have for the relatively little time we have it. GODLINESS -- living associated with a right relationship with God -- holds the true gain that lasts for an eternity.
Have a great day APPRECIATING HOW BLESSED WE ARE!
Carl
