Emergency Preparedness!
This past Friday I was part of a panel sharing information with our county and city regional emergency planning network (a group made up of key public officials, government offices, emergency response agencies, non-government assistance and relief organizations, neighborhood preparedness groups, and other individuals focused on disaster preparedness, response and recovery). Associated with my work as co-chair of our county Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board, we have developed a series of classes on emergency preparedness for people with disabilities and other special needs. In Friday's meeting we were provided the opportunity to bring awareness to the planning network of what we are doing, answer questions relative to the information we have put together for our lessons, and for this network of others to see how it fits in with their emergency planning as well.
With natural disasters in this world, we DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHEN they might strike. Earthquakes can happen without warning and tornadoes can suddenly arise. Though the movement of hurricanes can be monitored in order to provide warning for those in their path, when they hit, the devastation can be on a grand scale. Here in the northwest part of our country our main concerns of PREPARATION are for earthquakes, windstorms, power outages, flooding, and -- in some areas -- tsunamis. The emphasis is on being PREPARED BEFOREHAND rather than having no clue what to do after such disasters hit.
Being involved in ministry and with our community on various levels, I have opportunity to help others and meet real needs in a number of different ways. Meeting physical needs is something even Jesus did. However, spiritual needs being met are even more significant and even there the need is for BEING PREPARED NOW for that which is yet to come! NOT KNOWING WHEN that will be (i.e. Matthew 24:36-39) -- living with the acknowledgement it could come at any time -- NOW IS THE TIME FOR PREPARING.
Peter exhorted. . .
"(10) But THE DAY OF THE LORD WILL COME LIKE A THIEF, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. (11) Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE OUGHT YOU TO BE IN LIVES OF HOLINESS AND GODLINESS, (12) waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! (13) But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." (2 Peter 3:10-13 ESV)
That is the way to BE PREPARED FOR THE DAY of the Lord. Living for Him now is the way of being a prepared people for the place He has prepared for us in eternity. NOT KNOWING when that time might be we dare not put it off.
Have a great day HAVING PLANNED FOR THE PLAN GOD'S BEEN PREPARING!

Due Diligence!
How often have we tried to talk to someone over the roar of an engine, the banging of construction work, loud music, a noisy crowd, or some other loud noise? I remember a time when I would visit with someone whose house paralleled a main railroad line. Sometimes we had to just stop talking until the train was finished going by. Trying to hear what another is saying in such situations takes CONCENTRATION. We may have to STRAIN TO HEAR. We might even find ourselves watching the other person's lips in order to make out what they are saying so as to NOT MISS ANYTHING! There may also be the need of asking them to repeat what they have said. All of this reveals WE VALUE what they are saying. If we didn't, we could simply say, "Uh-huh" and just go on with whatever else we are doing.
Now, my wife won't just let me get by with an "Uh-huh". In order to make sure I was listening to what she was saying she will ask, "Uh-huh what?" Then it becomes clearly evident whether I was really paying attention or not. If I can't get away with that with my wife, how much more so with God. I ought to VALUE what my wife says because of the relationship we share. But even to a greater degree I must exercise due diligence in paying attention to what God has to say.
The English word "diligence" comes from the Latin "diligent" which is the present participle of "diligere" which means to "VALUE HIGHLY" or "LOVE". Oh, how that ought to be characteristic of our attention toward what God has declared.
It didn't take long into the exodus for Israel to begin complaining and wishing they were back in Egypt. Between two instances of complaining God, declared through Moses. . .
"(26) saying, 'If you will DILIGENTLY LISTEN TO THE VOICE OF THE LORD your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and GIVE EAR to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, your healer.' " (Exodus 15:26 ESV)
What a blessing God was promising Israel. God desired to remain their healer rather than an inflictor of punishment. Perhaps the people's greatest illness was a heart and hearing problem. Jesus met with the same kind of ailment and quoted from Isaiah regarding the blessing that could have been experienced if the people would only listen. (Matthew 13:14-15) Reading this longstanding history, let us exercise due diligence in not making the same error. Listening to what God has declared will not only reveal we HIGHLY VALUE and LOVE what He says, but it will also bring us the greatest blessings of life presently and eternally. As He is ever mindful of us, may we give Him our undivided attention.
Have a great day KEEPING A LISTENING EAR TOWARD GOD!

Some House Shaking?
Earthquakes can really shake things up. They have a way of gaining people's attention. However, that is not the only kind of shaking up that goes on in this world. There is some shaking up of a spiritual nature that really needs to take place.
In Matthew's account of Jesus cleansing the temple we read. . .
"(12) And JESUS ENTERED THE TEMPLE and DROVE OUT ALL WHO SOLD AND BOUGHT in the temple, and he OVERTURNED THE TABLES of the money-changers AND THE SEATS of those who sold pigeons. (13) He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you make it a den of robbers." " (Matthew 21:12-13 ESV)
To say the least, Jesus got the attention of those there. According to Luke's account it shook the world of some of the leaders enough that they sought to destroy Him. (Luke 19:47)
Recently reading through this passage I was struck by an inward focus relative to our body being the temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19) What is going on in there? Things happen in life that cause our stomach to turn. We find ourselves in situations that cause our heart to leap. We hear things that sometimes send the mind spinning. We can really get all shook up about life events.
Though there is a lot that goes on inside of us, it is not all of a physical nature. What is going on within us that relates to our relationship with God? What are we stacking and accumulating on the table of our heart? What kind of transactions and what sort of business is being carried on there? Is it a place where stolen goods have been hidden away and where plans of thievery are being made; seeking selfish gain (financial, position, power, or our own way, etc.) at the expense of others? What are we allowing to sit in there and occupy the space? Is there a need for Jesus to overturn that table and chair and to drive out the business we have been carrying on within? Or is it really GOD'S HOUSE with THE LORD'S BUSINESS taking place?
What are we making of the place where God is to dwell by His Spirit? WHAT KIND OF HOUSE HAS OUR LIFE BECOME? Is it where God is truly being honored and from which come honest and compassionate dealings with others? Is it truly becoming HIS PLACE; a place of holiness and of prayer and praise focused to glorify Him? If not, may we allow Jesus to make some "sweeping" changes in our life. Let us remain open to our life becoming more and more a suitable habitation for God.
Have a great day ALLOWING JESUS TO KEEP OUR HOUSE IN ORDER!

The Night Shift!
Though most people prefer working during the day and sleeping at night, there is comfort in knowing there are some who work the night shift. Law enforcement, emergency responders, medical staff at hospitals, and workers among other profession make it possible for others to sleep easier at night because important things are being covered and monitored.
When Israel was provided instructions for their continued observance of the Passover -- remembering their deliverance from Egyptian bondage and the passing over because of the blood of the lamb on their doorposts -- the statement was made. . .
"IT WAS A NIGHT OF WATCHING BY THE LORD, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; so this same night is a night of watching kept to the LORD by all the people of Israel throughout their generations." (Exodus 12:42 ESV)
While the Egyptian households -- including Pharaoh's -- woke up in the night to find their dead (Exodus 12:29-30), the nation of Israel was safely led by God in an exodus from Egypt. (Exodus 12:31) "A NIGHT OF WATCHING BY THE LORD." God was on duty to provide the aid and deliverance He had promised.
In one of David's songs of ascents, he notes the following regarding God.
"(3) He will not let your foot be moved; HE who keeps you WILL NOT SLUMBER. (4) Behold, HE who keeps Israel WILL NEITHER SLUMBER NOR SLEEP." (Psalm 121:3-4)
Our God is ALWAYS ON WATCH. Day and night He is at His work, fully aware of what is going on in our lives. When we lie down to sleep, why should both He and us stay awake? Knowing He continues on NIGHT WATCH provides the opportunity to get the rest the body, mind, and spirit need for each new day He graciously provides. May we find comfort in knowing our loving and merciful God is always on duty.
Have a great day BECAUSE GOD KEPT HIS WATCH THROUGH THE NIGHT!

As Family!
To experience a sense of belonging is very AFFIRMING. No one wants to feel like an outcast or outsider. We all need a place to belong. For some teens -- when families are not there for them -- a gang becomes their family. May we each consider the part we play in what we make of our own immediate families.
A healthy and AFFIRMING place is what the Lord intended for His church. Though that includes being honest about things that may need to change or can be done better, in love that truth can be handled. (Ephesians 4:15) This closeness of relationship is why the church is called "a body" (Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 1:18) that functions together under Christ Who is its head. It is also why the church is referred to as the "family of God" or "household of God" (1 Peter 4:17) because it is a place for all its members -- God's children -- to belong and experience the loving support needed in life.
A few days ago I had the opportunity to sit down with a brother in Christ who had some concerns on his heart, but he did not want to discourage anyone. He shared. We talked. And we prayed together. Positive things going on were AFFIRMED as well as a desire for more openness in ways in which God would not only use he and I, but also the rest of the family of God making up our congregation. Though we addressed concerns to work through, we AFFIRMED our own roles and what God can do through them. Between the two of us there was real mutual encouragement experienced. That time spent together were precious. We together AFFIRMED our love for each other, for the Lord's church, and the vision of reaching out to lost souls in our community.
In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica, he wrote. . .
"Therefore ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER and BUILD ONE ANOTHER UP, just as you are doing." (1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV)
Sometimes we need to stop and evaluate what we are doing and how we are doing it. We must not become complacent with the way things are. There is always room for growth. But how wonderful it is when brethren can come together and share the concerns and possible solutions and still ENCOURAGE and BUILD UP in the process. Regardless of age, as members of the Lord's body, we are in this together. May it be what we keep on doing.
Have a great day MAKING THE AFFIRMATION MUTUAL!

His Masterpiece!
What does it take to impress us? When we see the artistic, athletic, musical, poetic, etc., talent of others, are we impressed? What about God? Are we impressed with what He has made? Again and again in the first chapter of Genesis, all that God made was described as being "GOOD"! I like the statement that says, "God don't make junk!" Now, the English of that statement may not be good, but the SIGNIFICANCE of the thought certainly is! Do we see and appreciate the GOOD in what God has made? Then how do we view ourselves? Have we forgotten Who it is Who made us and for what GOOD purposes?
In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul stated. . .
"For WE ARE HIS WORKMANSHIP, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)
The Greek word translated "workmanship" is "poiema" which means "that which is made" [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] Strong's Lexicon defines it as "that which has been made" or "a work". Being God's work is most definitely SIGNIFICANT. However, I find it interesting that the English word "poem" comes from the Greek "poiema". A poem expresses the thoughts of the poet. It is given flow and beauty that is enjoyed in it being recited. Its meaning can be very deep and its impact can leave one breathless and speechless. Poems and songs written for my wife during our dating years and even after marriage still capture her attention. When she hears me sing those songs, though we have been married over thirty-six years, her eyes still sparkle. Poems she wrote were the expression of her heart to me.
"Poiema!" "A work!" "A poem!" Heartfelt expression of the author! Think of our lives as being SIGNIFICANT in this way as God is our Maker; the Author and Originator of our life! God created us as one of His masterpieces; a work expressing His view of life, love, righteousness, and eternity. As we live, can others read from the meter and verse of which our life is composed the SIGNIFICANCE we have to God? Are we continually sensing it as well as we continue to surrender more to the purposes He has in mind for living out our life? We are SIGNIFICANT to Him! We are His work -- His masterpiece -- created for the purpose of fulfilling His Divine purposes. Though the world might be ready to auction us off cheap, God is not! May we never lose sight of our value to Him as we live in a manner that can help others see what they also mean to God.
Have a great day BEING A RECITATION OF THE HEART OF GOD!

The Sermon!
[The following story was passed on to me, having been clipped from a Morro Bay, CA. bulletin.]
HIS NAME IS JOHN
His name is John. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college.
Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day John decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt and wild hair. The service has already started and so John starts down the aisle looking for a seat. The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat.
By now people are looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. John gets closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this church.)
By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick. About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward John. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, a three-piece suit, and a pocket watch. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly.
He walks with a cane and as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves, "You can't blame him for what he's going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?"
It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone breathing. The people are thinking, "The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do." And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to John and worships with him.
When the minister gains control he says, "What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget."
(Author unknown)
-------------------------
What made Paul such a great teacher? I think part of it may have been the possession of the same type of spirit as the elderly deacon in the above story. There was great CONSISTENCY between Paul's PREACHING and his DAILY LIFE. That is why he was able to write to the Philippian brethren. . .
"What you have LEARNED and RECEIVED and HEARD and SEEN in me --PRACTICE THESE THINGS, and the God of peace will be with you." (Philippians 4:9 ESV)
The learning, receiving, hearing, and seeing attached to the life of Paul were CONSISTENT enough to be an example worthy of note. In a powerful way these worked together to cause others to remember the truth Paul taught. It didn't matter what aspect of his life was being viewed (verbal, written, or activity) there was CONSISTENCY. That alone provides A POWERFUL SERMON to draw others to God. But the key to this having been the manner of Paul's life was his constant view toward Christ -- the greatest example of CONSISTENCY of all. That is why Paul also stated. . .
"Be imitators of me, AS I am of Christ." (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)
May we give serious consideration to the type of SERMON OUR LIFE IS SHOWING. CONSISTENCY will reveal the genuineness of our faith in God's Way.
Have a great day BEING THE SERMON THIS WORLD NEEDS!

"Ducks In A Row!"
Some people put off committing and surrendering their life to Jesus or getting involved with church activities until, as they say, "When I get my ducks in a row." What do they mean? Though the specifics may vary, the attitude is generally the same. "When I get my life (or act) together, THEN I'll make that commitment." "When I finish my education, THEN ...." "When I'm finally successful in business, THEN ...." "When my children get older, THEN ...." And on the statements may go.
The problem is that time often never arrives or is not realized when it does. In fact, I'm still trying to get my "ducks in a row." However, God is helping me accomplish this task a lot easier than when I was trying to do it on my own.
The focus is too often on the wrong side of things. We have it backwards when we think we have to prosper in a worldly sense before we begin getting things right for our soul.
John, writing to his dear friend Gaius, offered the following prayer:
"Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, AS IT GOES WELL WITH YOUR SOUL." (3 John 2 ESV)
Note the point of emphasis between the physical and spiritual! The prayer was not that Gaius' soul would prosper to the degree his physical well-being prospered. Instead, he prayed that just as it was going well with his soul, it would also go well with his health and everything else.
If we are striving to get our "ducks in a row", may it be spiritually speaking first! THEN -- with the help of God -- the rest of our being will follow along in like manner.
Have a great day WITH A PROSPERING SOUL LINKED TO ALL ELSE!

Admiration Or Adoration?
To ADMIRE someone is to be pleased with them. It is to approve, appreciate, or respect them. Our English word "admire" comes from the Latin "admirari" which means to "wonder at". To ADORE someone is to love them deeply or intensely. Our English word "adore" comes from the Latin "adorare" which means to "pray to". We may admire many people. Associating with people with admirable qualities encourages the same to be developed and possessed ourselves. In fact our focus ought to center on what is admirable or commendable. (Philippians 4:8) However, our Lord should not merely be the recipient of our admiration, but rather our sincere ADORATION! Such intensity serves to draw us to WORSHIP HIM and seek to PLEASE HIM rather than merely our own selves.
In Revelation we find the words of the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb where we read. . .
"(3) And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, 'Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! (4) Who will not fear, O Lord, and GLORIFY YOUR NAME? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and WORSHIP YOU, for your righteous acts have been revealed." (Revelations 15:3-4 ESV)
How much does that sound like our own focus toward the Lord? May that be the focus of our heart, our praise, and our very life! Let our day-to-day living demonstrate how much we truly ADORE OUR LORD, the Lamb of God given on our behalf. He indeed is worthy!
Have a great day LIVING A LIFE OF PRAISE AND WORSHIP TOWARD CHRIST!

Not For Sale!
As we survey our life, it is not always what we have to lose that should capture our attention, but rather what we dare not lose, give away or sell that should be kept in focus. Some things we can lose and still survive. That which speaks to our CHARACTER ought to be closely guarded since that is a reflection of the very essence of our being.
The story has been told that following the American Civil War, managers of the infamous Louisiana Lottery approached Robert E. Lee, asking if he would allow them to use his name in their scheme. They even promised he would become rich if he did. Astounded, Lee straightened up, buttoned his gray coat, and shouted, "Gentlemen, I lost my home in the war. I lost my fortune in the war. I lost everything except my name. My name is not for sale, and if you fellows don't get out of here, I'll break this crutch over your heads!" [original source unknown]
Solomon stated. . .
"A GOOD NAME IS TO BE CHOSEN RATHER THAN GREAT RICHES, and favor is better than silver or gold." (Proverbs 22:1 ESV)
An HONORABLE REPUTATION before the world begins with the sustaining of GOOD CHARACTER within and is to be prized. A GOOD NAME is that which can be neither bought nor sold, but rather cultivated, established, and maintained in recognition of our accountability before God. Once a GOOD NAME is lost it is difficult, if not impossible, to be regained.
Being of such CHARACTER is to live a life modeled after our Lord Who, in the flesh, was described as growing in the manner in which we also ought to grow. Luke recorded. . .
"And JESUS INCREASED in wisdom and in stature and IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND MAN." (Luke 2:52 ESV)
This is also the description of the manner in which Samuel grew. (1 Samuel 2:26) But it begins with the focus of living life before God and then among mankind. May we retain a GOOD NAME that reflects the wisdom of GODLY CHARACTER. If we lose that, we really have nothing!
Have a great day STRIVING TOWARD GOD FAVORED LIVING!

Presumption!
Presumption can get us in trouble. Presumption is often based on impartial or faulty information that leads to wrong conclusions. There were times Israel got into trouble from acting presumptuously rather than accepting or seeking God's guidance. (i.e. Numbers 14:44-45) It also got King Saul into trouble. (1 Samuel 15:17-23) However, presumption can be interesting in that it can move one either toward activity or keep it from happening altogether because the focus is wrong. It has been said, "It is almost as presumptuous to think you can do nothing as to think you can do everything." (Phillip Brooks) Oh how wide the pendulum can swing with regard to the view of self. On the one hand the presumption is based on a lack of self-worth or confidence while on the other it is based on the arrogance of overconfidence in self. Neither reflects a SUBMISSION to the WILL OF GOD and FAITH IN HIS ABILITY TO USE US to His glory and praise.
As Paul exhorted those at Corinth to follow through in their giving to meet the needs of saints in Judea, he wrote. . .
"(8) And GOD IS ABLE TO PROVIDE you with every blessing in abundance, SO THAT having all contentment in all things at all times, YOU MAY ABOUND IN EVERY GOOD WORK. . . . (12) For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. (13) By their approval of this service, they will glorify God BECAUSE OF YOUR SUBMISSION FLOWING FROM YOUR CONFESSION OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, (14) while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you." (2 Corinthians 9:8 & 12-14) ESV)
As we SUBMIT more and more TO THE WILL OF GOD while TRUSTING IN HIS ABILITY to equip us and strengthen us for what He desires us to do, we should be encouraged regarding our usefulness to Him. Remember, He is "able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us." (Ephesians 3:20 ESV) That is His power. Therefore, let us recognize our usefulness in His hands to serve in the capacity He desires us to fulfill. We can all do something to the benefit of others and the glory and praise of God as we surrender more fully to HIS WILL.
Have a great day PUT TO USE BY GOD FOR HIS PURPOSES!

Rabbit Stew!
Though there may be many variations to recipes for rabbit stew, one must never lose sight of the NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT. Someone has noted that an old recipe for rabbit began with the injunction: "First catch the rabbit." Perhaps we would say that's a no brainer. We might claim that's a given. However, this recipe made it clear how one must put FIRST THINGS FIRST. When PRIORITIES are being set, that is what must be done. And whether we are beginning a new year, a new week, or a new day, it is good to give consideration to and refocus on what we hold as our PRIORITIES.
Many seem to be planning and living life without duly considering the NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT; GOD and a right relationship with Him. Without that NUMBER ONE INGREGIENT life's plate may be full, but not complete. As "rabbit stew" will never be "rabbit stew" without the rabbit, life without a right connection with God will not be life. The relationship we have with the Father through the Son is of paramount significance.
John stated. . .
"Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." (1 John 5:12 ESV)
Israel was commanded to not have any gods before (or besides) God. (Exodus 20:3) He was to be their ONE AND ONLY. Does God desire any less today? What do our PRIORITIES say about God and our relationship to Him? How do our PRIORITIES line up with His? How are they associated with His Will? What do our PRIORITIES reflect as most important to us? Do some indicate God as having second place (or lower) or that He is truly the NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT in our life?
Even in view of all the necessities of life, Jesus exhorted. . .
"(33) But SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be added to you." (Matthew 6:33 ESV)
God -- being the Originator and Sustainer of life -- must remain the NUMBER ONE INGREDIENT in it. Only then can we live a life that can be savored now and for eternity. Yes, "taste and see that the LORD is good!" (Psalm 34:8)
Have a great day KEEPING LIFE'S RECIPE RIGHT!

Saving Face!
When we think of "saving face" we probably think of trying to work ourselves out of an awkward situation. To "save face" means to protect ones reputation. To "lose face" would be to have ones character or integrity brought into question. But what about "a saving face"? What about a face that we know would extend blessing rather than judgment? The expression on a face can sometimes quickly convey what it would take many words to describe.
Solomon stated. . .
"IN THE LIGHT OF A KING'S FACE THERE IS LIFE, and his favor is like the clouds that bring the spring rain." (Proverbs 16:15 ESV)
For one to have come into the presence of a king -- the symbol of authority and power over a nation -- to see an angry and stern face might have meant the end. "Off with their head!" "Hang them on the gallows!" "Take them to the dungeon!" Not the life blessing the "spring rain" would have been to the field where seed had just been sown. Certainly not words of nurturing. However, to see the face of the king lit up would seem an indication good news was coming. Perhaps honors would be given or acknowledgement that the king was delighted in something that had been done by the one standing there in his presence.
In Numbers we have what has been referred to as the priestly blessing (how Aaron and his sons were to bless the people of Israel), where we read. . .
"(24) The LORD bless you and keep you; (25) The LORD MAKE HIS FACE TO SHINE UPON YOU and be gracious to you; (26) the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." (Numbers 6:24-26 ESV)
In this way God's Name was to be upon the people and He would bless them. (Numbers 6:27) The desire for this blessing from God is reflected through the Psalms as well. (Psalm 4:6; 31:16; 67:1; 80:3, 7, & 19; 119:135) It was associated with the salvation of the Lord. (Psalm 80:3, 7, & 19)
Certainly it is not the darkness of anger and condemnation, but rather the LIGHT OF THE LORD'S FACE we desire to shine upon us. That is God's "saving face"; the face of HIS MERCIFUL FAVOR toward us. Living with the light of the Lord's face toward us we can live with a lit up face ourselves; experiencing the lasting joy of a right relationship with Him. May we continue to acknowledge HIS SOVEREIGNTY over our life as we live and serve in His presence to His glory and praise.
Have a great day LIVING UNDER THE LOVING COUNTENANCE OF GOD!

"But ... But ... But ...!
There was a man who was brought into court for some violation of the law. In his defense, he said to the Judge, "Your honor, I am a Christian. I am a new man, but I have an old nature too. It was not my new man, but rather the old that did the wrong." The judge responded, "Since it was the old man who broke the law, I will sentence him to thirty days in the county jail. And since the new man was an accomplice, I will give him also thirty days. I therefore sentence you to sixty days in jail."
It is amazing some of the excuses people come up with in defense of their actions. Perhaps we feel some of the ones we hear insult our intelligence; if they really think we are accepting them.
Paul wrote to the church in Ephesus. . .
"(17) Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must NO LONGER WALK AS THE GENTILES DO, IN THE FUTILITY OF THEIR MINDS." (Ephesians 4:17 ESV)
The belief has been around for ages -- and is still prevalent today -- that it doesn't matter what you do as long as you believe what is right. Paul referred to these as being "darkened in their understanding" (vs.18) and "have become callous" (vs.19). There can be no separation between the inner man and the outer man. We are responsible for both aspects of our being, and even though there is forgiveness, there are still consequences for our actions in this life.
Paul went on to point out. . .
"(20) But that is not the way you learned Christ! -- (21) assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, (22) to PUT OFF YOUR OLD SELF, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, (23) and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, (24) and to PUT ON THE NEW SELF, CREATED AFTER THE LIKENESS OF GOD IN TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS." (Ephesians 4:20-24 ESV)
Let us not allow "the old man" to be resurrected. As we have been raised with Christ through baptism, may we continue to walk with Him so that the RENEWAL INTO THE IMAGE OF GOD may continue.
Have a great day LIVING THE NEW LIFE!

From Good To Better!
Some things in this life don't appear to get any better. Instead they seem to go from bad to worse. Not only does this characterize some life situations, but the very lives of individuals who don't seem to be able to get their life on the right track. When the right focuses are not maintained and the righteousness of God is not acknowledged and pursued, we cannot expect things to get better.
In Paul's second letter to Timothy he noted. . .
"(12) Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, (13) while evil people and impostors will go on FROM BAD TO WORSE, DECEIVING AND BEING DECEIVED." (2 Timothy 3:12-13 ESV)
Those bent on deceiving seem to ultimately get caught up in their own deception and are deceived even further. The life spirals deeper and deeper into believing that which is false and the ability to discern truth from falsehood gets lost. Ultimately such people can come to a point where God gives them over to believing what is false. (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12)
It is in BELIEVING that life continues moving the right direction. Seeing some of what is occurring in this world presently may cause us to get discouraged. However, BELIEVING in the promises of God and the deliverance we are assured of in Christ should cause us to see life with a sense of hope and peace. Living in such a manner makes what we BELIEVE more BELIEVABLE with its positive impact visible in our approach to daily living.
Peter exhorted Christians going through trying times . . .
"(11) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. (12) KEEP YOUR CONDUCT AMONG THE GENTILES HONORABLE, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS AND GLORIFY GOD on the day of visitation." (1 Peter 2:11-12 ESV)
Being BELIEVERS is good for us. However, being BELIEVABLE (by the consistency with which we live our Christian life) is even better because it testifies to the genuineness of our faith and may result in others coming to BELIEVE as well. The more we BELIEVE the more BELIEVABLE our life will become. It will continue to move from good to better as others may be influenced that direction as well. May God be so glorified!
Have a great day GROWING IN CONVINCING GODLINESS!

Measuring Up!
ABC television has a weekly program titled "What Would You Do?" It is interesting to watch various situations set up as cameras watch people put on the spot to either choose to get involved or walk away and do nothing. Some situations get quite emotional. Some people later explain they were not sure what to do. Others have to confess their response was not good while others were quick to step forward to keep an injustice or abuse from being carried out.
It has been said, "The measure of a man's real character is what he would do, if he knew he would never be found out. [Macaulay]
How do we measure up? Is what we would do in given situations dependant upon whether or not we are being watched or is it based on GODLY CHARACTER? Having an opportunity to cheat, take something, slip by without doing all a job requires, etc. Would we if we knew no one would ever know? However, that is never true. First of all, we would know! And most significantly our life is fully exposed before God. (Hebrews 4:13) Therefore, all situations of life ought to be lived as it being the Lord we are serving. That is exactly the exhortation Paul gave to slaves during the first century.
We read. . .
"(5) Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, AS YOU WOULD CHRIST, (6) NOT BY THE WAY OF EYE-SERVICE, as people-pleasers, BUT AS SERVANTS OF CHRIST, doing the will of God from the heart, (7) rendering service with a good will AS TO THE LORD AND NOT TO MAN, (8) knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free." (Ephesians 6:5-8 ESV)
Now, let us notice the principle was not for slaves alone. It was also for those who were free. Therefore, the exhortation of Paul given here is applicable to everyone. It is a principle of INTEGRITY that ought to be associated with our life; character that measures up to DOING RIGHT regardless of being noticed or not.
Have a great day DOING RIGHT JUST BECAUSE IT IS!

Good Suggestion!
As we interact with others, there are often suggestions made as to what to do. Perhaps you have found yourself hanging out with friends after school and someone suggests actually going and doing something specific. Such a suggestion may be either met by the eagerness of the rest of the group or the grumbled response, "I don't feel like doing that today." The response is generally based on personal desire. Then there are some who don't care where they go or what they do if it is at least with those with whom they like to hang out. However, the influence of such relationships drawing into wrong activities is not good and that sometimes occurs. Still, how we respond to the suggestions says something about us. What are we revealing to those around us with regard to significant activities to which we are GLAD TO SAY, "YES!"?
In one of the songs of ascents we read the statement. . .
"I WAS GLAD WHEN THEY SAID TO ME, 'LET US GO TO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD!'" (Psalm 122:1 ESV)
Today we do not have a tent of meeting or a temple in a holy city to which we go. Though we may gather and assemble in church buildings (or homes or rented space), today we as Christians are the temple. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19) That holiness is to be kept in mind. We are also the "house" or "household" of God as the church. (Hebrews 10:21; 1 Timothy 3:15; 1 Peter 4:17) The relationship with one another is to be given serious consideration acknowledging our place in God's family. As such, we are to spend time together in worship to God, studying His Word, and strengthening one another through our fellowship together.
Are we GLAD for those opportunities? Do we love when going and gathering is suggested by others? Do we recognize the benefit we have opportunity to receive and provide for others? We cannot stir up others or be stirred up by them toward love and good works (Hebrews 10:24) if we are not together. Are we aware of what it says to God regarding His significance to us in the choices we make on a daily basis? Is there a desire within us that is eager to respond, "Yes! Let's do that!"? If not, perhaps we need to reevaluate our priorities and take a closer look at the purpose and significance our relationship with God and our brothers and sisters in Christ is to have.
It is those among whom we spend the most time and engage in the most activities who will tend to influence us the most. May that influence move us the direction God desires us to go.
Have a great day FINDING THE JOY OUR EXPERIENCES IN GOD'S FAMILY CAN PROVIDE!

Trailblazer!
When I think of "trailblazers", what comes to mind are stories I have read of the pioneers who headed west across America, creating the routes others would eventually follow. Where some might have seen no possible way, others forged onward around and over the obstacles that lay between them and their desired destination. Today, what we can drive in a matter of hours took weeks and months to travel where roads had not yet been established. We might also think of one -- with machete in hand -- cutting their way through a thick jungle.
The greatest "trailblazer" is God. When Israel saw themselves with no way to go, God provided A WAY through the Sea and provided escape from Egyptian bondage. God also provided A WAY through the Jordan River into the promised land. Israel was not to look back for a return to Egypt, but to press on IN THE WAY God provided toward the destiny He desired for His people. If it is a direction that needs to be taken, God can be depended on to provide THE WAY!
In Isaiah we read. . .
"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I WILL MAKE A WAY in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." (Isaiah 43:19 ESV)
Even in the "wilderness" of life, we are to continue looking to God for the guidance He provides. There may be times we see no way, but God can still provide THE WAY to get us where He desires us to be. When we find ourselves in the desert of sin and temptation, He will provide A WAY of escape. (1 Corinthians 10:13) Let us look for it and use it! In coming to the Father, Jesus IS THE WAY (John 14:6) provided for us to reach Him.
I was recently introduced to a short hymn by Don Moen titled, "God Will Make a Way." The words are:
"God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way,
He works in ways we cannot see,
He will make a way for me;
He will be my guide,
Hold me closely to His side,
With love and strength for each new day,
He will make a way, He will make a way."
[© 1990 by Integrity's Hosanna! Music / ASCAP]
May we trust God's ability to provide THE WAY to get us from wherever we are to where He wants us. He is able if we are willing to follow.
Have a great day WALKING THE PATH GOD OPENS BEFORE US!

Big Little Things!
There are seemingly little things that can really be big things. For example, a simple smile directed at someone can help change a frown into a huge smile on their face. A simple "Hello" when passing another has the potential to change their disposition as they recognize they have been noticed. Simply saying "Thank you" can make even the usual actions of another felt to be more significant.
During one of our Lord's encounters -- as great crowds were following Him -- we read. . .
"(2) And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, 'Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.' (3) And JESUS STRETCHED OUT HIS HAND AND TOUCHED HIM, saying, 'I will; be clean.' And immediately his leprosy was cleansed." (Matthew 8:2-3 ESV)
The next healing Jesus performed (recorded in this chapter) was done without even going where the individual to be healed was. (Matthew 8:5-13) Jesus had power to heal long distance. Distance is what most people would have kept from a person with leprosy or other skin disease of the time. Those with leprosy were not allowed to join in with the activities of society. They were to live separated from others and even as they approached others were to warn by crying out "Unclean, unclean." (Leviticus 13:45-46) How long had it been since this man had been TOUCHED by another? To TOUCH what was considered unclean would make the toucher unclean. Therefore, Jesus' TOUCH must have meant a great deal to this one considered by most to be untouchable. However, as soon as Jesus TOUCHED him, he was clean.
To me it appears Jesus' TOUCH was very intentional, since that was not necessary for Him to heal. He could have just spoken the words. He could have just told him to go and show himself to the priests as he did on another occasion (Luke 17:12-14) and eventually did tell him here. (Matthew 8:4) Jesus knew how to impact the lives of others. There is great power in such connections. It might be a hug, a touched hand, a shoulder patted, or even a firm handshake that can make a world of difference for another. May we not minimize such connections we can have with others.
Have a great day LIVING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS!

Learners!
There are many opportunities to learn. However, not all those opportunities are maximized. This is often due to what might be behind questions being asked as the reasons people ask questions can vary greatly. Some genuinely want to know the answers; they do want to learn. Others just want to see where others stand; to see if the position on an issue is shared or if there is a difference of opinion. Still others my ask only to try to test or trap as some of the Jewish leaders did with Jesus on a number of occasions. (i.e. Matthew 22:35) That reflects really no desire to learn anything that might otherwise be beneficial to life.
In his second letter to Timothy, Paul noted two kinds of learners. Paul referred to those who are. . .
"(7) ALWAYS LEARNING and NEVER ABLE TO ARRIVE AT A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH." (2 Tim. 3:7 ESV)
There are those who may have gained a lot of knowledge, but not necessarily wisdom for applying it to life. Some have filled their heads with all kinds of ideas -- even the latest ideologies of the day -- while being unable to come to grips with the real truth amongst it all. In this world there are those who might be categorized as "educated fools" while other simple minded folk do quite well at recognizing how life ought to be lived.
Paul went on to note the learning of Timothy in writing. . .
"(14) But as for you, CONTINUE IN WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED AND HAVE FIRMLY BELIEVED, knowing from whom you learned it (15) and how from childhood you have been ACQUAINTED WITH THE SACRED WRITINGS, WHICH ARE ABLE TO MAKE YOU WISE FOR SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS." (2 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV)
Timothy had received some wonderful spiritual teaching and nurturing through his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. (2 Timothy 1:5) From an early age Timothy had become familiar with the "sacred writings". He had come to understand Christ Jesus as the fulfillment of all the promises that text had held. Through that understanding he came to know the salvation in Christ.
We are all learners. The real question is what kind? Where are we in relation to the two above mentioned categories of learners? May our life REMAIN BASED ON THE SCRIPTURES; life built up on the foundation of the truth of God and our Lord Jesus Christ. That which we have learned we need to CONTINUE IN, remembering the source of that knowledge and wisdom is from God.
Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS OF GOD'S WORD FOR DAILY LIVING!

Who To Remember!
There was a little boy taking a tour of some government buildings in Washington DC. On this visit, among the people he was introduced to was the chaplain of the Senate. Later the boy asked his father if the chaplain's job was to pray for the Senate. His father's response was, "No, son. He stands up, looks at the Senate, and then prays for the country."
Who deserves our prayers? The better question is: Who NEEDS our prayers? Remember the song, "It's me, it's me, it's me Oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer..."? The verses expressed ideas such as: "Not my brother, not my sister, but it's me Oh Lord." The better way to sing the song is: "It's my brother, it's my sister, AND it's me Oh Lord." You, me, and everyone else are in need of prayers. That is why Paul wrote to Timothy. . .
"(1) First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made FOR ALL PEOPLE, (2) FOR KINGS AND ALL WHO ARE IN HIGH POSITIONS, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way." (1 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)
May we continue to be mindful of our officials, work associates, peers, etc., and each other in prayer throughout the day. We may not know what the particular needs are, but God is fully aware. So just pray.
Have a great day MINDFUL IN PRAYER OF FOLKS ON EVERY LEVEL!

Contentment!
The story has been told of a religious farmer who offered to give forty acres of rich farmland to anyone perfectly satisfied with what they had. When one man came to take the farmer up on his offer, he was asked, "Are you perfectly satisfied with what you have?" "Very much so," responded the eager and hopeful inquirer. The farmer then remarkably replied, "Then why do you want this land?"
When observing the lives of others, does it take long to note the signs of discontent? Always pursuing something else. Always wanting another thing. Quickly losing interest in what they have for something newer being advertised. Lives often filled with SO MUCH stuff, but marked by SO LITTLE happiness. This is in stark contrast to those who possess SO LITTLE while seeming to be filled with SO MUCH happiness. How strange?
We need to keep in mind Paul's exhortation. . .
"(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. (8) But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content." (1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV)
Paul went on to note some of the challenges and pain associated with the accumulation of wealth. It is too easy to become sidetrack from what is of greatest significance. The way much is amassed for this life almost makes it appear this life is viewed as all there is to our existence. However, there are no pockets in a shroud [burial garment] and I have yet to see a U-haul ® trailer being pulled behind a hearse. All the physical wealth and "stuff" we accumulate will be left to others.
Let us learn the "GAIN OF GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT." We ought to have a great sense of appreciation and gratitude for even the basic blessings we have received from God; food, clothing, and shelter. Whatever else we do possess, may we find ways to use it to the glory of God to further His purposes rather than merely satisfying our own selfish desires. Seeking to live for Him first will help keep the other aspects of life in perspective, thus enabling us to enjoy what we do have for the relatively little time we have it. GODLINESS -- living associated with a right relationship with God -- holds the true gain that lasts for an eternity.
Have a great day APPRECIATING HOW BLESSED WE ARE!

Wanting To Be Like . . . !
Sometimes people just don't know how good they have it. They look at others and envy their position or covet what they have. So many are led to see greener grass on the other side of the fence while failing to recognize the green turf on which they stand. How dissatisfied do we sometimes get in following where God leads us? How many times have we read what He offers us and then choose to go another direction anyway? We read the history of Israel and wonder how could they turn from absolute trust in God when we ourselves have so often been guilty of the same thing.
Near the end of Samuel's life -- as the people acknowledged he was getting old and his sons whom he had made judges were perverting justice by accepting bribes (1 Samuel 8:1-3) -- the elders of Israel gathered to make a request. We read. . .
"(4)Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah (5) and said to him, 'Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now APPOINT FOR US A KING TO JUDGE US LIKE ALL THE NATIONS.' " (1 Samuel 8:4-5 ESV)
God made it clear it was not Samuel, but rather He Himself Who was being rejected as king over them. (1 Samuel 8:7) Now, sometimes it is wise to be careful what we ask for. Though the people would eventually insist (vs.19) on having a king "LIKE ALL THE NATIONS" (vs.20), God first had Samuel describe what life under an earthly king would be like. In a word it would be COSTLY!
Reading through verses 10-18 we see the cost adding up and up. It would COST THEM their sons (vss.10-12) and daughters (vs.13) in the king's service. It would COST THEM property and tithes (vss.14-15) in addition to what was already being given to the Lord for the service of the priests. It would COST THEM their servants and animals. (vss.16-17) Then, worst of all, it would COST THEM the mindfulness of God when they complained about the outcome of their request. (vs.18)
To hear God's warnings and then choose to be "like the world" is certain to BE COSTLY. It WILL COST in terms of wasted energy and time pursing what does not provide the greatest blessings. It WILL COST in terms of frustration as things don't go as well as they could. And it can ultimately COST our very soul.
The greatest blessings come when we desire to be like what God wants us to be as we place our complete trust in Him and His Way! The grass is always greener in the pastures to which God leads. (Psalm 23:1-2) May we get our focus off what the world is like and follow in the Way of God.

Kidnapped!
Kidnapping is a serious crime. When one kidnaps another, the life of the kidnapped person is in their hands and they will be held accountable for what happens to that life. One should also be on guard against being kidnapped. When such occurs spiritually, it is not just the life, but the soul that can be in danger.
Paul warned. . .
"SEE TO IT THAT NO ONE TAKES YOU CAPTIVE by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ." (Colossians 2:8 ESV)
The Greek word translated "captive" here is "sulagogeo" which means "to carry off as spoil, lead captive." [source: W. E. Vine's Expository Dict. Of N.T. Words] Strong's lexicon defines it as "to carry one off as a captive (and slave)" and "to lead away from the truth and subject to one's sway." I have a Greek interlinear that translates the word "kidnapping".
False teachers carry others away to be a part of their own following through the use of "philosophy and empty deceit." The gain of a following is "the booty" or "spoil" they lead away. Souls are "kidnapped" away from the truth and held captive by falsehood. Those who do such will be held accountable. That is why teachers (self included) need to take their role very seriously. (i.e. James 3:1)
Some are more focused on gaining a following for themselves (note also Acts 20:30) than on teaching the truth and leading to Christ. If this happened during the first century, why should we be surprised it happens today? May we keep our intent focused on directing others to Christ and the truth as it is in Him. Let us also remain on guard for our own sake that if we are going to be held captive, let it be to Christ! (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Have a great day BEING HELD BY THAT WHICH IS ACCORDING TO CHRIST!

Life Valued!
God is the Creator and sustainer of life. His power and wisdom for life are displayed through the account of His creation in the beginning of this earthly realm. What was created the first day set the stage for that which He spoken into existence the second day and so forth on down to the creation of animals and man on the sixth day. (Genesis 1) We do not have to read very far into the Scriptures to find God's focus toward the value of life and the seriousness of taking it. (Genesis 9) How sad we have to read of murder touching the very first human family. (Genesis 4) If only Cain had seen himself not as his "brother's keeper" (Genesis 4:9), but as his brother's brother!/
Following the flood brought on the earth because of the great wickedness (Genesis 6:3) of mankind, after Noah and his family left the ark, God -- speaking to Noah and his sons -- stated. . .
"(5) And for your lifeblood I WILL REQUIRE A RECKONING: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I WILL REQUIRE A RECKONING for the life of man. (6) 'Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image." (Genesis 9:5 ESV)
Life is valued by God. Should it be any wonder since He is the Creator of it? It even pains Him when such judgment must be handed out by Him. (note Genesis 8:21-23; 9:11 and Ezekiel 18:23 & 30) It is repentance He desires. Each day He provides is a sign of His patience providing the opportunity for repentance and turning to Him. (2 Peter 3:9) However, even Peter reminded his readers that a TIME OF RECKONING is coming. (2 Peter 3:10) Therefore let us value not only life, but the souls of those around us as we continue to share the message of hope in Christ for life eternal.

Freedom!
The difference between "have to" or "get to" does not always relate to a specific task as much as it does to the ATTITUDE in which the task is carried out. To "have to" is like being enslaved by a task of which there is no choice but to do it. To "get to", on the other hand, could be the very same task simply approached with a WILLINGNESS to do it. For example, consider the contrast between "having" to do dishes and "getting to do dishes." Dirty dishes are a sign we had something to eat. Praise God we did! Would it not be a pity to have no dirty dishes to wash?
Someone has stated, "Do only what is required of you and remain a slave. Do more than is required and become free." [original source unknown]
Jesus taught the ATTITUDE OF BEING WILLING to go beyond what is required of us when He stated. . .
"(41) And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles." (Matthew 5:41 ESV)
The second mile is a choice. It is offered willingly. It is freely offered since it was not commanded or demanded. The first mile may have been fulfilling a requirement of law, but the second was a service offered by free will. It is a freedom we always have. How much better to do it freely than to be compelled by force. What greater joy to offer it ourselves. The attitude of being willing can take the drudgery out of tasks.
Both Paul and Peter brought the terms of "freedom" and "service" together. There is a sense in which they truly go hand in hand.
Paul exhorted. . .
"(13) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not USE YOUR FREEDOM as an opportunity for the flesh, but THROUGH LOVE SERVE ONE ANOTHER." (Galatians 5:13 ESV)
And Peter urged. . .
16) LIVE AS PEOPLE WHO ARE FREE, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but LIVING AS SERVANTS OF GOD." (1 Peter 2:16 ESV)
The issue is not, "WELL, someone should do it.", but "WILL I do it?" Free to SERVE. Free to go the second mile. Free to experience the joy of choosing to step forward and do for others. May that joy be ours on a daily basis. Willingly serving is a means by which that joy can be contagious.
Have a great day BEING THE "I" IN "WILL"!

Inwardly Focused Forward!
What characterizes our focus? As we look at what is going on around us in our immediate community and in the world at large, how are we impacted? Are we encouraged or distressed? Are we hopeful or horrified? Then as we consider our own life, how do we feel? Are we encouraged or anxious? Are we energized or worn out? Do we feel like we are winning or defeated?
The difference in perspective can boil down to the focus of WHAT GOD IS TO US! WHAT CHARACTERIZES OUR RELATIONSHIP TO HIM? Do we have a focus of INNER STRENGTH based on FAITH IN HIM that compels us to move onward in life in spite of challenges?
In Isaiah we read. . .
"(11) For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: (12) 'Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and DO NOT FEAR WHAT THEY FEAR, NOR BE IN DREAD. (13) But the LORD of hosts, him you shall regard as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. (14) And HE WILL BECOME A SANCTUARY and A STONE OF OFFENSE and A ROCK OF STUMBLING to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (15) And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.'" (Isaiah 8:11-15 ESV)
Do we fear what the world fears or do we view God as still ultimately being in control? Has God and His Will become a SACTUARY for us in the midst of life's challenges, or has it become an obstacle or stumbling stone in the path we are trying to take? Depending on WHAT GOD IS TO US and the RELATIONSHIP WE HAVE WITH HIM will determine the manner in which we go through life; stumbling, falling, or PRESSING ON IN THE INWARD STRENGTH that comes from STEADFAST FAITH in Him and the assurances He has provided.
May FAITH IN GOD remove the fear that would otherwise be in us. When others see the greater sense of peace in our life that encourages us to keep pressing on, they will know our FAITH IN GOD is as real as He Himself is. Let us continue walking on with Him!
Have a great day LIVING IN THE SHELTER OF GOD'S LOVING CARE!

Behind Curtain #1!
There was a long running television game show called "Let's Make A Deal" where people would win something, and then be given the opportunity to either keep it or trade it for whatever was behind a curtain? Sometimes the contestants were happy they traded, sometimes they were not, and other times they wished they had traded. What made the choice difficult was the fact they had no idea what was behind the curtain. It was all a chance whether the trade would be worthwhile or not. The participants would struggle with their decisions as part of the audience would encourage them to trade and others would encourage them to keep what they already had. It was a fun program for the participants and also for the viewers who would laugh, groan, applaud, or cheer, depending on how the selections turned out. However, such is all fine for a television show, but not for life!
God has a curtain. He desires us to have what is behind that curtain. The question is, how willing are we to give up what we already have? On the game show the participants didn't get a glimpse of what was behind the curtain and so their choices were made with the HOPE they had made the best one. God, on the other hand, has given us a peek behind the curtain, so we are not left to chance. Still, even with the glimpse, some seem reluctant to give up what they have and choose the prize behind curtain #1. Even in this world's crowd some cheer on to make the trade while others encourage to hold onto what one already has.
In noting the way opened up for us by Christ, the writer of Hebrews stated. . .
"(19) We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a HOPE that enters into the inner place BEHIND THE CURTAIN, (20) where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 6:19-20 ESV)
. . . And . . .
"(19) Therefore, brothers, since we have CONFIDENCE TO ENTER THE HOLY PLACES by the blood of Jesus, (20) by the new and living way that he opened for us THROUGH THE CURTAIN, that is, through his flesh," (Hebrews 10:19-20 ESV)
The HOPE is there behind the CURTAIN. HOPE is anchored there. Jesus has opened the way for us through the CURTAIN. The choice is ours! Have we chosen what's behind the CURTAIN? If so, are we encouraging others to choose that CURTAIN also? Whatever else we possess is not worth keeping compared to what God has for us behind CURTAIN NUMBER ONE! Let our choice always be toward the curtain through which our Lord has gone before us.
Have a great day ACCEPTING GOD'S "DEAL"!

The Whole Thing!
On the front page of The Peninsula Daily News (Jefferson County, WA edition, December 31, 2010) was an article titled "Whole Constitution To Be Read Aloud In Congress." House Republicans have put this in place; something never done in the 221 year history of Congress. The article stated, "They then will require that every bill contain a statement by the author citing the constitutional authority to enact the proposed law." Based on the outcry of many voters prior to our last election, this is an effort to get back to what the founding principles of the constitution laid out. Why should that seem like a novel idea? As I read the article I thought it was a "no brainer." Of course every decision of our elected officials should be based on the basic principles contained in the U.S. Constitution. However, there seems to be a degree of either ignorance or misunderstanding of what those principles are.
When it comes to making life decisions, the same focus should be considered to even a greater degree when it comes to the PRINCIPLES of Scripture. Not only do those PRINCIPLES relate to life now, but also to life eternal. Every "church" and every "Christian" ought to read THE WHOLE BIBLE seeking to know THE FOUNDATIONAL TRUTHS on which our life is to be built up. However, the direction many are going seems to imply either a misunderstanding, misinterpretation, ignorance of, or a blatant refusal to accept the SCRIPTURAL AUTHORITY for what is done in the name of Christianity.
The struggle has been around for a very long time. Even the nation of Israel struggled with a lack of understanding of the Mosaic Law under which they were to live. At the time of King Josiah, the book of the Law had actually been lost. (2 Chronicles 34:14-21) Upon its discovery Josiah repentantly led the nation back to a focus on God and His Will. (2 Chronicles 34:29-33)
If we are truly seeking to please God and be faithful followers of Jesus Christ, we must base our life and activity in the church not on our own desires, but on the AUTHORITY OF GOD'S WORD! His commands and principles are not to be set aside or forgotten. They are to remain the foundation for all we do. That is why every year I read through the WHOLE BOOK and encourage others to do the same.
One of the psalmists declared. . .
"YOUR WORD IS A LAMP TO MY FEET AND A LIGHT TO MY PATH." (Psalm 119:105 ESV)
And Paul exhorted Timothy. . .
"(15) Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, RIGHTLY HANDLING THE WORD OF TRUTH." (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)
We need the daily guidance God's Word can provide. If we do not rightly handle it our life will not be handled rightly either. Though we presently live under Christ and not the Mosaic Law, the WHOLE BOOK is still worth reading. Throughout the Scriptures we see the manner in which God has always sought for mankind to live so as to received the greatest blessings now and even more so in the eternity He has planned for us. As we have begun a new year, let us live with the resolve to base our decisions on the Will God has revealed through His Word. It is the only solid foundation for security through the storms of life. (Matthew 7:24-25)
Have a great day BASING LIFE CHOICES ON THE AUTHORITY OF GOD!

Key To Continuity!
One of the unchanging things about life is that things change. Not much remains the same including the weather, passing seasons, and even the phases of our life; the stages from infancy through adulthood. Facing the transitions of ENDINGS and BEGINNINGS and BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS can be viewed with apprehension. How will they go? What will they bring? What will be left behind? What might be gained? How will we work through the transitions? Will we be ready?
Where can we look for stability through the transitions? OUR LORD declared, as recorded by John in the Revelation, . . .
"(12) Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done. (13) I am the ALPHA and the OMEGA, the FIRST and the LAST, the BEGINNING and the END." (Revelation 22:12-13 ESV) [also Revelation 21:26]
ALPHA and OMEGA are the FIRST and LAST letters of the Greek alphabet. Even in the Old Testament the concept of FIRST and LAST was associated with the position of God. (i.e. Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12) There are many things of which mankind may see the BEGINNING or the END, but perhaps not both. Not so with God. Neither is it so with OUR LORD! The Originator (Creator) [note Colossians 1:15-16] and Ender (Fulfiller) of all that relates to life and eternity! That is OUR LORD! He spans it all. With Him we can be prepared and sustained through all the transitions of life. From BEGINNING to END our life is safe entrusted to His care. OUR UNCHANGING LORD (Hebrews 13:8) is with us all the way from our BEGINNING and even beyond our END in this realm.
Paul stated. . .
"(8) If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we LIVE OR whether we DIE, WE ARE THE LORD'S. (9) For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be LORD BOTH OF THE DEAD AND OF THE LIVING." (Romans 14:8-9 ESV)
Even death does not bring an END to our relationship with THE LORD, for the END of this life is merely the BEGINNING of even greater glory! He is the One Who can provide the continuity that brings us through the varying scenes of life and ultimately into the glorious eternity we were created to share with Him. May THE LORD continually remain the unchanging constant in our life!
Have a great day WALKING WITH THE ONE WHO TRANSCENDS IT ALL!

Be Assured!
With the coming of every year there always seem to be those who make predictions as to what is going to take place. Some of those predictions happen to come about while many never do and people seem to lose sight of that when they listen to those predictors again. Though there have been many dates predicted through the years for the return of Jesus and the end of this world in which we presently live, Jesus made it clear. . .
"(36) But CONCERNING THAT DAY AND HOUR NO ONE KNOWS, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. (37) As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man." (Matthew 24:36-37 ESV)
Some things have not been revealed. The important thing to do is to acknowledge that day is coming by presently living prepared for whenever it might be. We can be assured that in God's time it will take place. (note 2 Peter 3:8-10) Still, as we look at some of the things challenging life in this realm, let us be encouraged that victory will still be found in following God's Will.
Consider the following encouraging predictions that seem to parallel the Will of God that can be COUNTED ON! Additional statements in brackets are mine.
TOP TEN PREDICTIONS FOR 2011
1. The Bible will still have all the answers. [The ones that are of eternal consequence. (note 2 Timothy 3:16-17)]
2. Prayer will still be the most powerful thing on earth. [Let us keep praying and trusting. (note James 5:16)]
3. The Holy Spirit will still move. [Let us continue to keep our life in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25)]
4. God will still honor the praises of His people. [Every day He is worthy of the praise of all creation. (note Psalm 148)]
5. There will still be God-anointed preaching. [It must remain His message and not man's. (i.e. 1 Peter 4:11)]
6. There will still be singing of praise to God. [May it well up from deep within us. (Ephesians 5:19)]
7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people. [He is mindful of every aspect and need of our life. (Matthew 6:25-33)]
8. There will still be room at the Cross. [Only through the sacrifice of Christ is our forgiveness and salvation possible. The hope is for all who will come. (John 12:32-33)]
9. Jesus will still love you. [The cross reveals the greatness of that love. (Romans 5:8)]
10. Jesus will still save the lost when they come to Him. [Through Him we gain access to the Father. (John 14:6)]
Solomon stated. . .
"Many are the plans in the mind of man, BUT IT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE LORD THAT WILL STAND." (note Proverbs 19:21 ESV)
Though it may not always appear to be so, we can still be assured that GOD IS IN CONTROL and will ultimately bring all of His purposes to completion. May we not become discouraged as we continue to seek to serve His Will as we live out each day He provides.
Have a great day KNOWING GOD'S WILL SHALL PREVAIL!
