What Is God To You?
The question has been asked, "What is God to you? A 'spare tire' or 'steering wheel'?" Though I think there should be a focus besides these two, consider the difference between them for a moment.
A "spare tire" can be readily available, but never used. I do not like to drive without knowing I have a good spare just in case a flat tire occurs. Though flat tires have been an occasional inconvenience for me, I have also owned cars for which I never used the "spare tire". It was always available, but the need never arose for putting it to use. Is that all God is to us; only a resource when we feel we need Him? Is He only thought of and turned to when life goes flat or we encounter problems along life's highway?
A "steering wheel" is used to change the direction a vehicle will travel. We turn to the left or right at intersections and also steer around obstacles in the road. Is God the "steering wheel" in our life; being utilized for the direction life is traveled? The "steering wheel" is definitely an important part of a vehicle and being able to steer the life is crucial as well. However, if God is merely the "steering wheel", might that be then pictured as us having God in our hands rather than us being in His?
The place God really needs to have in our life is the "driver's seat". It is there we can rely on Him for controlling the direction our life is moving all along the way.
Through the prophet Jeremiah we note. . .
"(23) I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that IT IS NOT IN MAN WHO WALKS TO DIRECT HIS STEPS. (24) Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing." ( Jeremiah 10:23-24 ESV)
And David prayed. . .
"(23) Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! (24) And see if there be any grievous way in me, and LEAD ME IN THE WAY EVERLASTING!" ( Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)
May we allow God to remain in the driver's seat of our life, knowing He can safely steer us around life's obstacles and bring us to a safe arrival of our eternal home.
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD TO DIRECT LIFE'S COURSE!
