The Time For Activity Is Now!

Solomon noted. . .
"(4) But HE WHO IS JOINED WITH ALL THE LIVING HAS HOPE, for a living dog is better than a dead lion." (Ecclesiastes 9:4 ESV)

AS LONG AS THERE IS LIFE THERE IS HOPE! When the life is gone the opportunities cease for any further preparations relative to the eternity that follows. However, regardless of the condition of the life -- whether it is characterized as a wild dog or a royal lion -- there is still hope as long as there is life.

NOW IS THE TIME FOR ACTIVITY! Now is the time for preparation! Now is the time to get things in order! The time will come when such activity ceases. If we say we will do it "tomorrow", we are making a dangerous gamble. Today is the day for action!

Lord willing, we will make the transition from 2010 to 2011. This time of year often brings a focus on New Year's resolutions. Some resolve to make none so they break none. However, without a plan or goal how do we keep ourselves moving forward or how can we check our progress?

Each day we have is a gift from God. Each day is an opportunity to resolve to use life to His glory. Each day is another chance to bring our life more in line with His will. Each day to which we awake is the first day of the rest of our life!

DO OUR RESOLUTIONS HAVE GOD IN MIND? What is it He wants to make of our life? What is that for which He wants to use us? What is it we have not yet fully died to? What is it we have not yet handed over to Him?

DO OUR RESOLUTIONS HAVE GOD'S FAMILY IN MIND? What is our role within the family? What gift have we perhaps left untapped or undeveloped? What kind of attachment do we have to our brethren?

DO OUR RESOLUTIONS HAVE THE WORLD IN MIND? Are we focused on being the salt and light this world needs? Are we focused to revealing how practical God's Will is for daily living by the example of our life through our day-to-day activities? Are we set to show how godly living can still take place in the midst of an ungodly world?

DO OUR RESOLUTIONS HAVE ETERNITY IN MIND? What direction are our choices taking us? What are our greatest joys linked to? Where are our treasures being laid up? Where is the attachment of our heart?

Each of these questions deserves our serious consideration and prayer. I don't know all that may come with the New Year. I don't even know all that tomorrow may hold. Still, though I may not know what the future holds, I KNOW WHO HOLDS THE FUTURE! I resolve to entrust my life to Him now so that I am prepared to meet Him in eternity!

Have a great day OF RESOLVE TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

New Every Morning!

Some things wear out. Other things get used up. However, some of the greatest things are replenished with each morning our Lord provides.

Perhaps there are times we find ourselves depressed over situations. We may even struggle with forgiving ourselves for past mistakes. Through those times we may wonder how we could be looked upon with love by God. Nevertheless, He does loves us and desires to continue to help move us onward and upward through our walk here. As we continue to turn from sin and walk more in line with God's will, may we keep calling to mind His promises and accept the certainty of the hope He provides.

This is exactly what the prophet Jeremiah did as he considered the sinfulness of Israel and even his own short comings. Then he remembered what we also ought to remember. . .

"(21) But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: (22) The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; HIS MERCIES never come to an end; (23) THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness. (24) 'The LORD is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.'" (Lamentations 3:21-24 ESV)

God's faithfulness can always be counted on. Keep trusting Him. Keep accepting His forgiveness. Keep giving your life more and more over to Him. It is safe in His care!

Have a great day UPLIFTED BY GOD'S DAILY RENEWAL!

Not Always As Appear!

Though there are still some simple toys which have stood the test of time and remain popular (i.e. a tricycle, bat and ball, hula-hoop, etc. ), there's been some real creativity and engineering that has gone into some new toys over the years. Among those toys are the "TRANSFORMERS -- ROBOTS IN DISGUISE" that have not only been popular among children (and adults), but have played out on both the television and movie screen. These vehicles, planes, and other seemingly ordinary objects would transform into robots equipped with weaponry. Such reflects the idea things are not always what they appear to be; being DISGUISED as something else.

DISGUISES may be fun such as for dressing up for a play or party, a father dressing like Santa to give gifts to his children, or for other such purposes. However, because they are used to deceive, we must remain on guard. DISGUISING is nothing new. There are those who are masters of DISGUISE; people who appear different than they truly are. They are deceitful. They are those described as wolves in sheep's clothing. That was the description Jesus applied to the false prophets of that day. (Matthew 7:15) We must remain aware of sinister plans cleverly at work in the world today to deceptively lead away from the light of God's truth!

In Paul's letter to the church at Corinth he warned. . .
"(12) And what I do I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. (13) For such men are FALSE APOSTLES, DECEITFUL WORKMEN, DISGUISING THEMSELVES AS APOSTLES OF CHRIST. (14) And no wonder, for EVEN SATAN DISGUISES HIMSELF AS AN ANGEL OF LIGHT. (15) So it is no surprise if HIS SERVANTS, also, DISGUISE THEMSELVES AS SERVANTS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. Their end will correspond to their deeds." (2 Corinthians 11:12-15)

We need to keep our focus on the truth of God's Word so that we are not led astray by what may appear to be light, but in actuality is darkness and deception. If we could see the devil's works for what they truly are, the deception might not be so easy. That is why he attempts to counterfeit that which is of the Light. The devil makes evil ways appear beneficial and good. He makes falsehood seem believable and many begin to follow his ways.

Let us remain walking in the light of God's truth so that what is contrary to it may be exposed for what it is. God's Way is still The Way that brings about the best life now and leads to life eternal. As Jesus urged his disciples being sent out as sheep among wolves, may we also "be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." (Matthew 10:16) Living genuinely in accordance with God's Will and remaining wisely aware of the fruit produced in the lives of others, we will safeguard our life against being deceived and led away.

Have a great day LIVING IN AND FOCUSED ON THE LIGHT OF GOD'S TRUTH!

The Greatest!

What is the greatest gift we have ever given another? What is the greatest gift we have ever received? Maybe what comes to mind is something of more sentimental than monetary value. Perhaps what has come to mind are spiritual things; blessings money cannot buy. God -- being the Greatest Giver of the "good" and "perfect" gifts (James 1:17) -- provided the means of meeting our GREATEST NEED through the GREATEST GIFT! Being saved from our sins and so receiving the hope of eternal life is the GREATEST NEED we have had. There is much we can live without, but where would we be without such a blessing and hope? This need was met by the giving of the GREATEST GIFT; God's own Son to die on the cross in our place. Knowing God's ability and willingness to give in such a way, do we ever question His mindfulness of our life?

Paul encouraged. . .
"(31) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, HOW WILL HE NOT ALSO WITH HIM GRACIOUSLY GIVE US ALL THINGS?" (Romans 8:31-32 ESV)

We may rightly conclude that God does not give us everything we want. What often becomes of a child whose parent does that? However, He has provided everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of and relationship with Jesus. (note 2 Peter 1:3) To know God was willing to give His own Son is to encourage us to recognize He will also provide for other needs as well.

Have a great day PRAISING THE GOD WHO KNOWS JUST WHAT WE NEED!

God's Gifts!

When gifts are GRACIOUSLY received, that means they are kindly, tactfully, or politely accepted. The giver is not snubbed or made to feel bad, even if the gift is not well thought of. Such is then a GRACIOUS act and feelings are not hurt. A parent may do this with a child who offers a handmade gift that is a little lopsided. Still it is loved because it was made especially for them by their child whom they love. Friends may be GRACIOUS in this way as well because they want to preserve the friendship. However, how do we make God feel when we do not view His gifts as we ought? God doesn't give junk. He knows how to give just the right gifts!

James described God's gifts as. . .
"(17) Every GOOD GIFT and every PERFECT GIFT is FROM ABOVE, coming down FROM THE FATHER of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:17 ESV)

When it comes to God's gifts we should know what to expect with regard to their quality and ability to adequately meet the need. He has been GRACIOUS to give us far more than we deserve. So, how do we treat His gift of GRACE? Do we view it as an account on which we can draw as we choose to go on doing our own thing? (note Jude 4) By going on sinning do we see it as God's opportunity to just make grace abound even more? (Romans 6:1) "By no means" is such to be the case! (Romans 6:2 & 15) What would that say about our view of God's GRACE? To take lightly any of God's gifts, what would that say about our relationship with Him?

God's gifts should never be viewed as if in need of being exchanged. Their color is pure, their size is right, and in spite of our not deserving them, they are GRACIOUSLY provided. May we live in a manner that reflects our sincerest appreciation for them all!

Have a great day LIVING EXCITED BY GOD'S GRACIOUS GIFTS!

Wrapped Gifts!

Gifts! Many were given and received over the last few days. Garbage bags quickly filled with the discarded ribbon and gift wrap which was feverishly ripped away to reveal each gift. Today some of those gifts are continuing to be enjoyed and appreciated while others are being taken to the stores to be returned or exchanged. For many that's what it's been all about. For many that's what all the anticipation was focused on. However, the real gifts are those which are still enjoyed and appreciated long after the wrapped ones are used up, worn out, or lost interest in.

It has been said, "The best gift is a family that is all wrapped up in each other."

We were not able to be surrounded by all our FAMILY over the last few days, but we sure enjoyed those with whom we were. It was time to visit and laugh and hug. It was time spent being reminded of what the greatest gifts are. It was not those that had been placed under the tree, but FAMILY; people who mean so much to each other.

There is another FAMILY to be all wrapped up in. That is GOD'S FAMILY. The relationships there are also a gift. God placed us in that FAMILY when we were united with Christ. He desires for us to cherish those relationships and to become wrapped up in that sense of FAMILY.

The Hebrew writer stated. . .
"(11) For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified ALL HAVE ONE ORIGIN. That is why HE IS NOT ASHAMED TO CALL THEM BROTHERS," (Hebrews 2:11 ESV)

The New Living Translations reads, "have the same Father" and the New International Version reads, "are of the same family". The Literal Greek is "from out of one all" or "from one all". The reference of the Hebrew writer is to Jesus. As our elder brother, He has provided the means to be drawn into this marvelous FAMILY relationship. Praise God for such a Lord and Brother as we have in Him.

Have a great day WRAPPED UP IN THE LOVE OF GOD'S FAMILY!

Why Them?

If you had history making news, who would you tell? The biggest national newspaper? ABC news? The President or other national leader? The church elders? The preacher? Who?

When it came to announcing the birth of Jesus it is interesting to note who got the news first. In Luke's account we read...

"(8) And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. (9) And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. (10) And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I BRING YOU GOOD NEWS OF A GREAT JOY that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (12) And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.'" (Luke 2:8-12 ESV)

SHEPHERDS? These HUMBLE SHEPHERDS were involved in honorable work. They faithfully undertook the task to watching their sheep through the night? But why were SHEPHERDS chosen to receive this announcement? Why not the Jewish High Priest? Why not the Pharisees or teachers of the Law? Why not a group of elders of the people? Why SHEPHERDS?

Isn't it interesting how many times God chooses the humble and lowly rather than the exalted among men to receive such wonderful announcements? Such were the ones (as we see even during Jesus' public ministry) who were most eager to accept the Messiah. Many of the learned and exalted -- the "elite" of the day -- would not accept.

However, there may be another parallel here. As SHEPHERDS watched their sheep, the "GOOD SHEPHERD" (John 10:14-15) came onto life's scene. SHEPHERDS! Jesus later would look upon the people with compassion realizing how they were like "sheep without a SHEPHERD". (Mark 6:34) SHEPHERDS! Ones who realized what it meant to humbly serve and protect. SHEPHERDS! Folks who understood what it took to meet the needs of those placed in their care. SHEPHERDS!

But the "Great SHEPHERD" (Hebrews 13:20) these SHEPHERDS would go to see as an infant would one day become the "Lamb of God" who would take away the sins of the world. (John 1:29)

What a connection!

It is through humility that we are best able to receive God's greatest announcements. To the Corinthians Paul wrote...

"(26) For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. (27) But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; (28) God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, (29) so that no human being might boast in the presence of God." (1 Corinthians 1:26-29 ESV)

Why SHEPHERDS? Why not! And why not us?

Have a great day HUMBLY RECEIVING GOD'S "GOOD NEWS"!

Just The Facts!

WHAT WE DON'T KNOW!
The exact date of Christ's birth.
The exact location of the stable.
How many wise men came to visit.

WHAT WE DO KNOW!
Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, having conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus was born and then placed in a manger because there was no room at the inn.
Angels announced His birth as shepherds watched their sheep.
Shepherds visited Him.
Wise men later visited when Jesus was in a house, not a stable.
Gifts were brought, but not by Santa.
It was during the days of Caesar Augustus and the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
King Herod was jealous to hear of another King.
All took place according to prophecy.
We are not expressly told in the Scriptures to celebrate His birth, but we are told to remember His death, burial, and resurrection. He had to live before He could die. But He lives still!

WHAT IS OF SIGNIFICANCE?
That Jesus was born? Yes, because it was all according to prophecy which confirms Who He is! To understand and accept the humanity of Jesus is as important as the acceptance of His Deity. (John 1:1-2,14 and I John 4:2-3)
His purpose? Yes, this is of utmost importance (I Corinthians 15:1-4). He came to seek and to save the lost, giving Himself for our sins.
His life is an example for us to follow.
Jesus is to be focused on every day of our lives, not just a couple times each year.
Jesus is not merely, as some say, "The Reason For The Season", but rather
THE REASON FOR LIFE!

Jesus said...
"...I came that they may have life and HAVE IT ABUNDANTLY." (John 10:10b ESV)

WHATEVER THE REASON
FOR THE SEASON WITH YOU
MAY JESUS BE THE REASON
FOR YOUR HOPE ALL YEAR THROUGH.

Have a great life KEEPING HIM IN FOCUS!

All The Same To Him!

Recently ABC's "Nightline" reported on the five biggest lies stated during the politics of 2010, with one of them noted as the biggest lie of the year. A problem with lies spoken in public during campaigns or other political activities is there are always reporters with their ears open for every tidbit they think worthy of reporting. Even comments made based on bad information -- unintentional misstatements -- can come back to haunt for years because of the media capturing those statements on camera. Though some lies may slip by, most do not go unnoticed; at least by someone.

In Revelation we find the warning. . .
"(8) But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, AND ALL LIARS, THEIR PORTION WILL BE IN THE LAKE THAT BURNS WITH FIRE AND SULFUR, which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8 ESV)

Just as God makes no distinction between lying and the other sins listed here, He also makes no distinction between big and little lies. Though society may talk about "little white lies" to distinguish them from "big" ones, lies are lies! Falsehood is falsehood! Untruth is untruth! And God is fully aware of every one spoken. According to this passage, God takes lying very seriously and therefore so should we. TRUTH MATTERS!

As Jesus walked on this earth, even then He warned. . .
"(36) I tell you, on the day of judgment people will GIVE ACCOUNT FOR EVERY CARELESS WORD they speak, (37) for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned." (Matthew 12:36-37 ESV)

What we say is on record! Others may be fooled, but not God. It has been quipped, "How can you tell if a politician is lying? His lips are moving." Though we should refrain from painting all politicians with the same proverbial brush, may TRUTH remain the expectation whenever our lips move.

Have a great day EXEMPLIFYING THE IMPORTANCE OF HONESTY IN ALL THINGS!

Our Size!

Do you remember hearing about George Washington Carver (1860-1943)? He was a US Chemurgist, botanist and educator. Among his scientific work he has been noted for developing hundreds of industrial uses for peanuts and sweet potatoes. It is told he once related the following: "When I was young I said to God, 'God, tell me the mystery of the universe.' But God answered, 'That knowledge is reserved for Me alone.' So I said, 'God, tell me the mystery of the peanut.' Then God said, 'Well, George, that's more your size.' And He told me."

God has revealed much to us. However, there are still many things which remain a mystery. Some things we may never know. Other things we will understand in time. Still others may be understood in eternity. We ought to thank Him for what He has revealed and resolve to hold on to those things since they have obviously been revealed for a reason.

The nation of Israel was told. . .
"The SECRET THINGS BELONG TO THE LORD OUR GOD, but THE THINGS that are REVEALED BELONG TO US and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law." (Deuteronomy 29:29 ESV)

Some things we may not fully comprehend because they are just too vast for our finite mind to grasp. The intelligence of God is so beyond us, while the things more our size He has revealed. Take advantage of what God has granted. Read His Book and understand what He desires to make known to us. It is all for our encouragement, strengthening, and guidance. Not all of life is intended to be a mystery!

Have a great day ACCEPTING WHAT HAS BEEN REVEALED!

Blessed!

"Bless This Mess." I have seen that little message posted in homes. Though some homes we go into may seem to have everything in its place (almost like visiting a museum or showroom) others reveal they are definitely lived in. Perhaps something in between the two extremes would be the most comfortable in which to live and invite guests.

Reading through Amos recently I was struck by an expression. We read. . .

"(6) 'I GAVE YOU CLEANNESS OF TEETH in all your cities and lack of bread in all your places, yet you did not return to me,' declares the LORD." (Amos 4:6 ESV)

Perhaps today we would think of "cleanness of teeth" as having brushed them. However, the idea here was because of Israel's wickedness, God had withheld His blessings from them and they therefore did not have much food to eat. The text goes on to note other blessings God had withheld or what He had sent against them, and yet again and again it is stated, "'yet you did not return to me' declares the LORD." This time of famine, would be marked by a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. (Amos 8:11) Though seeing food stuck between teeth may not be considered by us to be a pretty sight, dirty teeth would have been a sign they had had plenty of food to eat.

Thinking of what unclean teeth would then represent, reminded me of a little poem we had posted on one of our kitchen cupboards for many years. It reads:

"Thank God for dirty dishes,
They have a tale to tell.
While other folk go hungry,
We're eating very well.
With home and health and happiness,
We shouldn't want to fuss.
By this stack of evidence,
God's very good to us." [author unknown]

Dirty teeth and dirty dishes do have a tale to tell. May we not fail to recognize how blessed we truly are. Thanking God daily in prayer will help keep us from taking those many blessings for granted. Living a life that continually seeks to fulfill His Will also will reflect our sincere appreciation and gratitude for His blessings.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING GOD'S GIFTS!

Special Designation!

This past week I had the privilege of being part of an orchestra accompanying four performances of The Nutcracker Ballet in Port Angeles, Washington. This orchestra was made up of members of the Port Townsend Community Orchestra (of which I am a member), the Port Angeles Symphony, and other individuals. During one of the rehearsals our conductor introduced some of the members who might not have been familiar to many of the Port Angeles players. Students, teachers, and others were named and when it came to introducing me, I anticipated our conductor simply introducing me as a member of the Port Townsend Orchestra. However, I felt it was a very special designation when he introduced me as HIS FRIEND. That really meant a lot to me and caused me to reflect on the number of years we have known each other.

There are those with whom we may have a "working relationship" that we also consider "FRIENDS". Such implies not only shared involvement in something worthwhile, but also a closer connection than merely being co-workers. Think of how special it must have been when Jesus looked at His disciples and stated. . .

"(14) YOU ARE MY FRIENDS if you do what I command you. (15) No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I HAVE CALLED YOU FRIENDS, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you." (John 15:14-15 ESV)

The Greek word translated "FRIENDS" comes from "philos" which denotes loved, dear, or friendly. [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] Strong's Lexicon defines it as a friend, an associate, he who associates familiarly with one, or a companion. The disciples would still be servants of the Lord, but the relationship was closer than that. Jesus called them "FRIENDS" and that FRIENDSHIP toward the Lord was reflected in their obedience to carrying out His Will.

We sing hymns such as "I Have Found A FRIEND in Jesus" (Charles W. Fry, 1881) and "What a FRIEND We Have in Jesus" (Joseph Scriven, 1855), but what kind of FRIEND are we in return? FRIENDSHIP is a mutual thing, not a one way street.

Abraham believed God and "he was called a FRIEND OF GOD." (James 2:23) The disciples believed Jesus to be the Messiah and were willing to give their lives to serve His Will and He called them "FRIENDS." As we rejoice in the FRIENDLINESS of both the Father and the Son toward us, may our life reflect our appreciation through continued belief and surrender to serving the Divine purposes for which we have been given life. Yes, with the Lord we can have both a working relationship and a FRIENDSHIP. May it be so to His glory and praise!

Have a great day KEEPING THE RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST CLOSE!

Humble Like Epaphroditus!

[12/19/2010 "teEn-MAIL"]

HUMBLE LIKE EPAPHRODITUS!

Like Timothy, Epaphroditus had developed a special relationship with Paul. Paul referred to him as a "brother", "fellow worker", and "fellow soldier." Each one of these reveals the facets of the relationship shared in the ministry of the church; family, laborer, and fighter for the cause of Christ. He was also the Philippian's messenger who had apparently been sent by the church at Philippi to help with Paul's needs while he was imprisoned. (Philippians 2:25) That Epaphroditus was dear to the Philippians is also made evident by their concern when they heard he had been sick; even near death. (Philippians 2:26-27) Therefore Paul was eager to send him back to them so that they might rejoice at seeing him again.

In describing the humble willingness to serve in the work of Christ, Paul noted. . .

"(29) So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men, (30) for HE NEARLY DIED FOR THE WORK OF CHRIST, RISKING HIS LIFE TO COMPLETE WHAT WAS LACKING IN YOUR SERVICE TO ME." (Philippians 2:29-30 ESV)

In what the Philippians had not been able to help with, Epaphroditus did as he was there with Paul. However, the cost of that humble service was described as being brought NEAR TO DEATH and that of "RISKING HIS LIFE". He exemplified Christ in that as Christ humbled Himself to the point of obedience to death on a cross (Philippians 2:8), Epaphroditus was also willing to humbly PUT HIS LIFE ON THE LINE in furthering the Lord's work. In fact, the Greek "mechri thanatou" translated "nearly died" (or literally "until death") in verse 30 is the same wording Paul used in reference to Christ in verse 8 translated "point of death" (or literally "until death"). It appears Paul wanted the parallel of humility to be noted. No wonder Paul acknowledged Epaphroditus as worthy of being honored.

In Epaphroditus we have another example of SELF-LESS SERVICE on behalf of others. That is what the quality of humility does; keeps self out of the way so a higher good may be fulfilled. May such be an honorable quality of our life as well.

Have a great day HONORABLY EXEMPLIFYING JESUS!

Humble Like Timothy!

Paul and Timothy had a wonderful relationship. Timothy had provided much assistance and encouragement to Paul in their ministry of the Gospel together. Paul described his relationship with Timothy as being like "a son with a father" in the manner in which they had served together. (Philippians 2:22) Paul had been a good mentor in discipling Timothy toward growing into a very effective evangelist. Though in prison, Paul knew he could have confidence in Timothy's continued work and connection with those among whom Paul had labored. Therefore he looked toward being cheered by news (Philippians 2:19) through Timothy of how things were going with the brethren at Philippi.

Note how Paul described the humble characteristic of Timothy in contrast with others where he wrote. . .

"(20) For I have no one like him, who will be GENUINELY CONCERNED FOR YOUR WELFARE. (21) They all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 2:20-21 ESV)

The kind of concern held by Timothy for those at Philippi exemplified the kind of concern exhibited in Jesus Christ. As Jesus humbly "made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:7), Timothy focused selflessly on others as well. In fact, in focusing on others it was done with the soul saving INTERESTS OF JESUS CHRIST in mind.

Without the maintaining of a humble spirit, our own interests will continually get in the way. May we, like Timothy, seek to fulfill the INTERESTS OF JESUS CHRIST as we interact with others. It is the highest good to which we can give ourselves.

Have a great day MOTIVATED TO SERVE BY THE INTERESTS OF JESUS!

Humble Like Paul!

Paul urged the church at Philippi toward a spirit of humility among themselves. He also pointed to Jesus as the supreme example of humility. Though Paul always seems to have upheld Jesus as the number one standard to pattern life after, he was still very much aware of the need to practice what he preached. I believe that even in this area of humility Paul could have said, "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ." (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV) Paul made no boast about his humility, but it was a characteristic of his life truly worth imitating.

Paul was earnest and exercised diligence in his ministry. From those labors he desired to see continued fruit. (note Philippians 2:14-16) The manner in which the Christians at Philippi conducted their lives together would be a sign of the impact the Gospel of Jesus had made on each one of them individually.

Note Paul's attitude relative to His service for the Gospel of Jesus as stated where he wrote. . .

"(17) Even if I am to be POURED OUT AS A DRINK OFFERING UPON THE SACRIFICIAL OFFERING OF YOUR FAITH, I AM GLAD AND REJOICE WITH YOU ALL. (18) Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me." (Philippians 2:17-18 ESV)

Remember, Paul wrote this letter while imprisoned. He was willing to OFFER HIS LIFE SACRIFICIALLY for the sake of reaching others with the Gospel of Jesus. Gladly and joyfully he was willing to be POURED OUT on behalf of others. This very much paralleled what we noted yesterday regarding Jesus. Just as Jesus humbled Himself and was willing to obey wherever that obedience led Him -- "even death on a cross" (Philippians 2:8) -- so Paul was also willing to obediently proclaim the Gospel and serve His Lord, humbly going WHEREVER THAT OBEDIENCE LED HIM. Because of His HUMBLE OBEDIENCE, the Lord used Paul in powerful ways to bring the message of salvation to others.

Jesus: a humble servant Who came into this realm to fulfill the Father's Will. Paul: a humble servant willing to live SACRIFICIALLY to fulfill the Will of His Lord. May we die to self so that we can better live for the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:15), thus having our life marked by the same willingness exemplified by the Lord Jesus and His servant Paul.

Have a great day WILLINGLY POURING OURSELVES OUT IN SERVICE TO THE LORD!

Humble Like Jesus!

"Immanuel"; "God with us." (Matthew 1:23) God in the flesh. (John 1:14) Taking on the flesh of humanity to meet our greatest human need. That is what our Lord was willing to do. The One Who has every right to have a "Holier than thou" or "high and mighty" attitude humbly came into this worldly sphere as an infant, lived and walked among mankind, and gave us the most marvelous example of how to live a godly life in an ungodly world.

In noting this humility, Paul wrote. . .
"(5) HAVE THIS MIND AMONG YOURSELVES, WHICH IS YOURS IN CHRIST JESUS, (6) who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, (7) but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, (8) HE HUMBLED HIMSELF BY BECOMING OBEDIENT TO THE POINT OF DEATH, EVEN DEATH ON A CROSS." (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)

To humbly serve is one thing. However, to humble oneself to OBEDIENCE TO THE POINT OF DEATH -- "even death on a cross" -- is perhaps taking humility to is furthest point. Jesus could have struck down those who opposed Him. He could have called twelve legions of angels which the Father could have sent to rescue Him. (Matthew 26:53) Here was the One Who on another occasion had walked through a crowd ready to throw Him off a cliff. (Luke 4:29-30) However, that occasion was not the time for His death as it was when He came to face the cross. Jesus humbly surrendered completely to the plan for redeeming us.

Jesus! Humble! OBEDIENT TO THE POINT OF DEATH! Our Lord provided us with an example of humble OBEDIENCE TO WHEREVER IT LEADS! That is the kind of humility we also need to develop if we are to possess the same mind He had. It is the humility that keep us following the path of righteousness NO MATTER WHAT challenges may be faced. It is a humility that empowers us to press on in the Will of God in spite of hardship and suffering.

May we share our Lord's RESOLVE TO OBEY THE FATHER wherever that path of obedience in life may take us. It will always be the path that ultimately leads to God exalting our life. (i.e. James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6)

Have a great day FULLY SURRENDERED TO THE FATHER'S WILL!

Humility!

Humility is a quality to exhibit, but not to be boasted of. To acknowledge our humility could be an honest assessment, but to declare we are humble seems to diminish its quality. It is simply WHAT WE ARE TO BE as we continue our growth AS SERVANTS OF CHRIST.

In Paul's letter to the church at Philippi, as he exhorted toward unity of mind and love, he urged these Christians. . .

"(3) Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but IN HUMILITY COUNT OTHERS MORE SIGNIFICANT THAN YOURSELVES. (4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also TO THE INTERESTS OF OTHERS." (Philippians 2:3-4 ESV)

We all have our interests. Sometimes those interests can get in the way of relationships. Paul was seeking for that to not be the case within the church at Philippi. It was not that they were to completely forget their own interests or concerns. It was that their focus was not to "only" be there, "but also" with consideration toward the interests of others. As we recognize how important and SIGNIFICANT our own interests are to us, we should also be aware of how others have that same kind of focus on their own. We therefore validate the SIGNIFICANCE of those interests when we hold the same kind of concern toward other's interests. Though we should guard against showing such interest only when we receive it ourselves (since that in itself is a selfish perspective), it can become a powerful mutual benefit within the relationship.

As an example, I have interests that are initially not the interests of my wife. However, because she loves me, she joins me in those interests. My wife also has some of her own interests and she appreciates when I will share in them with her. This means we at times humbly set aside our own desires or something else we'd rather do and choose to validate and honor the other's interests. This works to nurture our relationship and build each other up. The same is true when we have that kind of focus within the family of God, the church.

May we recognize the power of such interest in those within the church, within our families, and with others. Acknowledging the SIGNIFICANCE of the lives of others in this way can lead to nurturing relationships with the Lord. After all, how much interest has He shown on our behalf? If we are seeking the interests of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2:21) we will also have our focus on others. In humility may it truly be so.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OTHERS!

Well Spoken Of!

"He is the best thief I have ever known. I'd love to have him work with me. He knows just how to worm his way into any home and sweet talk anyone. He's got the golden touch."
"He is quite the football player. I wish I could make as many tackles as he does. He knows just how to grab and block so the referees can't see his illegal moves. I'd love to have him as my sport's tutor."
"What a golden tongue! He can lie his way out of any situation. What a gift to be able to know the right things to say."

Sounds like ones being well spoken of, BUT by whom and in what light? Are those the COMPLIMENTS we would like to receive? Just as important as what COMPLIMENTS are paid us is who is paying them!

Jesus had some Jewish leaders come to him with the intent of trapping Him with a question. However, before they asked the question they poured the flattery on thick! We read. . .

"(15) Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his talk. (16) And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, 'Teacher, we know that YOU ARE TRUE AND TEACH THE WAY OF GOD TRUTHFULLY, and you DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANYONE'S OPINION, for you ARE NOT SWAYED BY APPEARANCES. (17) Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?'" (Matthew 22:15-17 ESV)

Those statements regarding Jesus were true. However, the intent of these questioners was far from that of COMPLIMENTING Jesus. They wanted to cleverly trick Him with their question. How sad they did not recognize how true their statements regarding Jesus truly were.

What type of COMPLIMENTS are being made regarding our life? To whom are we listening?

Jesus warned. . .
"(26) Woe to you, WHEN ALL PEOPLE SPEAK WELL OF YOU, for so their fathers did to the false prophets." (Luke 6:26 ESV)

Such could be a sign we are living more like the world than according to the standard God has given us. Or it may be that by flattery others desire to use us.

John wrote. . .
"(11) Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. (12) Demetrius has RECEIVED A GOOD TESTIMONY FROM EVERYONE, AND FROM THE TRUTH ITSELF. We also add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true." (3 John 11-12 ESV)

Now, there is a COMPLIMENT: to be spoken of well EVEN BY THE TRUTH! What a picture of a God centered life -- for our life to testify to the TRUTH and for TRUTH to testify for our life! May that be the compatibility and consistency for which we continually strive.

Have a great day SPOKEN WELL OF BY THE TRUTH!

Good Salt!

Some people are described as being "good for nothing." What is meant by that is their contribution to life is very little if anything at all. They are not helpful. Perhaps they are "bums", always seeking something from others, but not willing to do anything for themselves. Acknowledging this is not indicative of a very good reputation secularly speaking, how much worse for it to be so spiritually. When Jesus taught we are to recognize our role as salt in this world, He stated. . .

"(13) You are the salt of the earth, but IF SALT HAS LOST ITS TASTE, how shall its saltiness be restored? IT IS NO LONGER GOOD FOR ANYTHING except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet." (Matthew 5:13 ESV)

We often think of foods that do not taste good if not adequately salted. Salt simply makes some foods taste better. Salt has also been used as a preservative and for healing. Perhaps we easily understand those influences in a spiritual sense as well. However, salt can also give rise to great THIRST. Though I do not generally use very much salt, when I have eaten very salty food, I find myself drinking and drinking and drinking trying to quench that THIRST. This has even been to the point of feeling like I am sloshing from all the water I drank. Because of the THIRST I am still driven to drink more.

Are we living such that our life can cause others to THIRST for the Lord and His Way? To influence those around us by our Christian character bringing healing, preserving righteousness, seasoning life, or creating THIRST for the truth, then our life is good for something in its most glorious sense. May the genuineness of our Christian life draw toward Christ Who said. . .

"(37) On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, "IF ANYONE THRISTS, LET HIM COME TO ME AND DRINK. (38) Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' " " (John 7:37-38 ESV)

Come In?

"Knock knock." "Who's there?" ". . . ." When it comes to "knock knock" jokes, the responses vary and sometimes we find the final line funny while other times it's a groaner. However, not all actual knocks at the door are funny or welcome. Sometimes serious consideration needs to be given before the door is opened. We wouldn't just open our door to any and everybody. That could put our life or the lives of our family in danger.

Though we might be considered to be very hospitable, we generally do exercise some judgment with regard to who and what we welcome through our door to come in and share our lives. However, the front door is not the only means by which we INVITE INTO our home. Every time we turn on the television, pop in a movie, or begin an internet search, we are choosing what and whom we are INVITING INTO our home. Perhaps we would say the danger is not exactly the same as letting such through our actual front door, but is it really less of a danger; especially spiritually speaking? What is viewed from our television and computer screens can chip away at our spirituality and begin to deaden our conscience and the moral fiber God desires us to possess. Therefore, the INVITATION ought to be given very serious consideration.

David stated the resolve. . .
"(3) I WILL NOT SET BEFORE MY EYES ANYTHING THAT IS WORTHLESS. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. (4) A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil." (Psalm 101:3-4 ESV)

Verse three in The New Living Translation reads, "I will REFUSE TO LOOK AT ANYTHING VILE AND VULGAR. I hate all crooked dealings; I will have nothing to do with them." [NLT © 1997 Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

Certainly David did not have television, home movies, and the internet in mind when he expressed that commitment. However, would we not agree it relates to anything we choose to place before our eyes? Remember, it began with a look that invited sin into David's house. (2 Samuel 11:2) And that was just the beginning of the guilt David bore.

The same hand that can slam the door in the face of danger can also switch the channel or turn off that which is worthless, vile, and vulgar. May we, like David, give serious consideration to what we do choose to INVITE IN where we sit. If the Lord was sitting in the chair beside us would the choice be the same? Well, He knows. May our choices therefore be godly ones.

Have a great day SETTING THE EYES ON GOOD COMPANY!

The Real Thing!

How long would you listen to me tell you about something I appeared to know nothing about? How could I describe to you something I had never experienced? Perhaps I could relate what someone else had described, but you could probably tell by the manner in which I related the facts whether it had really been my own experience or not.

There is a problem in this world with trafficking the COUNTERFEIT. KNOCK-OFFS of name brand items -- though cheaply made by someone else -- are offered as the real thing. Such does not sit too well with the person who finds they have been duped. However, thinking about this spiritually, could we be guilty of trying to pass off UNLIVED TRUTH? Have we tried to convince others of a life we ourselves have not really experienced?

Jesus charged some of the leaders of that day as being long on the preaching, but quite short on the practice. We read. . .

"(1) Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, (2) 'The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, (3) so practice and observe whatever they tell you -- but not what they do. For THEY PREACH, BUT DO NOT PRACTICE." (Matthew 23:1-3 ESV)

No wonder Jesus so often addressed practical, to the heart, aspects of the law they were missing. God's commands were relative to daily living and were intended to be lived out in practical ways.

Even for us today, the most convincing way to get others to accept the validity of the truth of God as being "the real thing" is to live in a manner which clearly reveals we truly believe it. As we strive to help others come to understand the joy and the peace of a life associated with Jesus, they need to see that GENUINE JOY AND PEACE in our own life. When we talk about the blessing of forgiveness can others sense the REAL RELIEF that is ours having the weight of guilt lifted from us? This world is really in need of "the real thing." May we live in such a manner that God's Way will be known for what it truly is; the pathway to eternal life.

Have a great day DISPLAYING GENUINE GODLINESS!

Precious?

There are some passages of Scripture which can cause us to sit up and say, "Hmmm." Sometimes the perspective being read is not quite the perspective we hold. That does not change the truth of the passage. It may simply reflect there is another side to something than what we commonly think. Perhaps this is no more true than our perspectives on life and DEATH. In a real sense, life is short. (James 4:14) It never seems long enough with those we love. Being involved in ministry and called upon for support within our community I am frequently brought face-to-face with the great sense of loss, sadness and sorrow experienced in the losing of loved ones to DEATH.

Still, in the psalms we read. . .
"PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD IS THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS." (Psalm 116:15 ESV)

Isn't it life we generally hold onto as "precious"? We look at a newborn baby and say, "How precious." We watch children grow up and say, "How precious." We see loving families and say, "How precious." We see an elderly couple still so much in love with each other and we say, "How precious." All of that is about living. But DEATH . . . "precious"?

Yes, "precious" because DEATH is not the end. For those who live life in a right relationship with God, that relationship carries over into eternity in an even more glorious sense. If we could see clearly now how glorious that is, we (like Paul) would have little desire to resist the departure. (note Philippians 1:23) For those of God, DEATH is the beginning of the greatest glories. It is the beginning of an existence away from all the injustice, pain, suffering, and limitations of this realm. It is eternal life in the glorious presence of God.

As Christians and for Christians we may grieve the loss, but not like those in the despair of no hope. (1 Thessalonians 4:14) We know there is more to our existence than momentarily meets the eye. Therefore, may we presently live mindful of our God given purposes for this life while we look forward to the eternal glories to come. There is a sense in which rather than being a curse of this realm, DEATH is a gift that opens the way into the most glorious existence God has in mind for us. Oh, how "precious" are the blessings God has in store for those who love Him.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY GLORIES YET TO COME!

Durable Faith!

Durability. That's what we like in the products we buy. We want them to be well built so as to provide years of good use for the money we spend. For everyday items we seek the quality Timex® for years advertised as "TAKES A LICKING AND KEEPS ON TICKING." However, though I had Timex® watches before that did seem to last well, the time still came when they ticked no more and had to be replaced. (It was at least cheaper to replace them than to have them repaired.)

Durability. Perhaps that may bring to mind the RESILIENCE of the human spirit that keeps on keeping on in spite of adversity. Resilience is defined as the ability to recover quickly from setbacks. While some allow life's setbacks to cause them to give up, others -- though perhaps stopped for a moment -- get right back up and press on in spite of them. Because there is a cause worth holding fast to and something worth pressing on for, though the life may appear to TAKE A LICKING, IT KEEPS ON TICKING!

This makes me think of Peter and the other Apostles when the Jewish leaders attempted to halt their preaching. Peter and John had been brought before the council, questioned, and told not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. (Acts 4:3, 13-18) Later the Apostles were again arrested and put in prison, but an angel released them, and they went right back to their public teaching. (Acts 5:17-21) Brought before the council again, they were reminded of the charge to stop their preaching (Acts 5:27-28), but as at other times, the Apostles held to obeying God rather than men. (Acts 4:19-20; 5:29)

When the decision was made to release the apostles, we read. . .
"(40) and when they had called in the apostles, THEY BEAT THEM and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. (41) Then THEY LEFT the presence of the council, REJOICING that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name. (42) And every day, in the temple and from house to house, THEY DID NOT CEASE TEACHING AND PREACHING Jesus as the Christ." (Acts 5:40-42 ESV)

Yes, they TOOK A LICKING, BUT KEPT ON TICKING! They were unstoppable in sharing the massage of salvation in Christ. It did not matter who opposed them, they pressed on anyway.

Do we believe enough in Christ and the reality salvation is only in Him (Acts 4:12) that we are growing in such RESILIENCE of faith? May the "mainspring" of our faith be wound up by the resolve that life entrusted to the Lord and His purposes is worth pressing on in no matter what we face. Obedience to men may ward off some challenges in this realm, but it is obedience and surrender to God's Will that provides us with eternal blessings and stands to presently bring the greatest blessing to others around us. When others look to see what makes us "tick", may they find it is our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Have a great day ENERGIZED BY ENDURING FAITH!

Religion, Of All Things!

A woman, out doing her Christmas shopping, came across a nativity scene displayed in a department store window. As she peered through the window she snapped, "Now look what they're trying to drag into Christmas. Religion!"

Speaking of religion: The reality, for us as Christians, is that every aspect of our lives ought to be touched by our "religion". Many claim that "Jesus is the reason for the season." Others urge for Christ to be kept in Christmas. Whatever we might think about that (not knowing exactly when Jesus was actually born), when such emphasis is being made, what is being reflected by the rest of the life at all other times of the year?

What we believe is made evident by the way we conduct our daily life. RELIGION is more than what we do together in our church assemblies. Have we attached our faith to some aspects of our life, but not to others? The world soon picks up on that type of inconsistency. Our actions are a powerful communicator of our faith. How serious are we about it?

James admonished. . .
"(26) If anyone thinks he is RELIGIOUS and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's RELIGION is worthless. (27) RELIGION that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." (James 1:26-27 ESV)

And Peter wrote. . .
"(11) whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies -- in order THAT IN EVERYTHING GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (1 Peter 4:11 ESV)

Genuine active faith keeps our RELIGION a part of our daily activity.

OF ALL THINGS, MAY OUR RELIGION BE PRACTICED DAILY!

Longing!

When someone sets their heart on something, they will do almost anything to gain the possession. In the longing, opportunities are seized upon to gain what is so strongly desired. Whatever it takes, however long it takes, and no matter the cost, the pursuit continues.

Is our life marked by any such longing? Do we recognize our life as being the focus of such a longing?

Job asked. . .
"(17) What is man, that you make so much of him, and THAT YOU SET YOUR HEART ON HIM, (18) visit him every morning and test him every moment?" (Job 7:17-18 ESV)

We find similar expressions in Psalm 8:4 and Hebrews 2:6. Job was unable to see the full picture of what God was doing in connection with his life, but he did know God was fully aware of him and all of mankind. Though Job struggled in maintaining a sense of hope, He knew GOD'S HEART was set on man.

Do we recognize how much GOD'S HEART is set on us? He has provided the means of complete salvation at the cost of His Son. He has preserved His Word in written form so we are able to study it every day to know what God expects of us and what we can expect of Him. And every day He allows to happen in this realm is another opportunity for mankind to respond to His love with a penitent heart. (2 Peter 3:8-9) Can we not see how much God has made of man in providing these and all His other blessings?

With all the opportunity and the means of salvation provided in Christ, mankind is without excuse for neglecting such a great salvation. (Hebrews 2:3) May we help others recognize how much GOD'S HEART is set on them to also come into a right relationship with Him so that they too may receive the present and eternal blessings He longs to provide.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY HOW WIDE GOD'S HEART IS OPEN TOWARD US!

What Is God To You?

The question has been asked, "What is God to you? A 'spare tire' or 'steering wheel'?" Though I think there should be a focus besides these two, consider the difference between them for a moment.

A "spare tire" can be readily available, but never used. I do not like to drive without knowing I have a good spare just in case a flat tire occurs. Though flat tires have been an occasional inconvenience for me, I have also owned cars for which I never used the "spare tire". It was always available, but the need never arose for putting it to use. Is that all God is to us; only a resource when we feel we need Him? Is He only thought of and turned to when life goes flat or we encounter problems along life's highway?

A "steering wheel" is used to change the direction a vehicle will travel. We turn to the left or right at intersections and also steer around obstacles in the road. Is God the "steering wheel" in our life; being utilized for the direction life is traveled? The "steering wheel" is definitely an important part of a vehicle and being able to steer the life is crucial as well. However, if God is merely the "steering wheel", might that be then pictured as us having God in our hands rather than us being in His?

The place God really needs to have in our life is the "driver's seat". It is there we can rely on Him for controlling the direction our life is moving all along the way.

Through the prophet Jeremiah we note. . .
"(23) I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that IT IS NOT IN MAN WHO WALKS TO DIRECT HIS STEPS. (24) Correct me, O LORD, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing." (Jeremiah 10:23-24 ESV)

And David prayed. . .
"(23) Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! (24) And see if there be any grievous way in me, and LEAD ME IN THE WAY EVERLASTING!" (Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)

May we allow God to remain in the driver's seat of our life, knowing He can safely steer us around life's obstacles and bring us to a safe arrival of our eternal home.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD TO DIRECT LIFE'S COURSE!

"I know! I know!"

"Let me show you how to work it.", the father offers his child.
"I know how it works, just give it to me!", the son demands.
"But you need to remember how the..."
"I know, I know. Just let me have it!"
So the child takes the toy, feeling he knows all he needs to about its function. But within a few minutes he returns to his father asking, "Daddy, can you fix it?"

Though we would brand this as childish behavior, is it any different from such action at any age? There are many who RUN ON into life thinking they know all they need to know, then, after making a mess out of their life, look, hoping there is someone who can help make the necessary repairs.

There are many things we learn by experience, but we don't have to learn everything that way. God has revealed His wisdom for life through His Word to spare us from making needless mistakes. Life does come with an instruction manual we would do well to keep consulting. God has placed His Word in our hands so that as we take life in our hands we will know how it is to be best used. Still, how many times do people (including ourselves) GO ON AHEAD doing our own thing only to end up with something else to be fixed?

We might even picture the child who RUNS AHEAD thinking they are grown up enough to find their own way and ends up getting lost. The sad parallel is through choices such as that in relation to life's direction, many have become spiritually lost thinking they could find their way all alone. God seeks to direct our lives to keep us traveling the right road. He desires for us to follow His guidance away from the pitfalls of life. Self-reliance is really not a sign of maturity.

John wrote. . .
"(9) Everyone who GOES ON AHEAD and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. WHOEVER ABIDES in the teaching has both the Father and the Son." (2 John 9 ESV)

Let us stay with God, continuing to listen to His instructions. He wants to reveal to us how to best work the life He has given us. If you have run ahead and find you are broken, don't despair -- He can fix your life. Therefore, stay with Him. Be His faithful child. Let Him teach you what you need to know. And if you have run ahead, return! It's a sign of maturity to accept His guidance.

Have a great day KEEPING IN STRIDE WITH THE FATHER.

Squeaky Clean!

"Squeaky clean" may make us think of wiping our hand across a counter or table and hearing it squeak. That generally means there is no grease or other spills that might cause the hand to slip and slide or nothing sticky to stop the movement of the hand. When "squeaky clean" is used in reference to people it usually refers to a clean or spotless reputation; having no criminal record or not suspected of illegal or immoral activities. Such are individuals of INTEGRITY through and through.

There was an occasion when Jesus was criticized for not washing. We read. . .

"(37) While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. (38) The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. (39) And the Lord said to him, 'Now you Pharisees CLEANSE THE OUTSIDE of the cup and of the dish, BUT INSIDE you are FULL OF GREED AND WICKEDNESS. (40) You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?'" (Luke 11:37-40 ESV)

There were traditions relative to washing that had developed through the years; procedures associated with hand washing, as well as "the washing of cups, pots, copper vessels, and dining couches." (Mark 7:3-4) We know that washing before eating helps prevent germs from getting into our food. However, the problem then and even today is more concern over food and bodily cleanliness, while little or no consideration is given to CLEANLINESS OF LIFE before God. This criticism was also addressed in Matthew 23:25-28.

There was a day and age when bathing was done once a week and Bible reading was done daily. Has such become the reverse for many today? Are we more focused on bodily cleanliness or clean dishes than we are with what is SPIRITUALLY GOING ON in our life? Good hygiene is good, but GODLINESS IS BETTER because it relates to life now and for eternity. (1 Timothy 4:8)

Praise God for the cleansing we have in Christ. (Ephesians 5:26) May we not be like the swine who is washed and returns to wallow in the mud. (note 2 Peter 2:22) The life that is CLEAN WITHIN will be clean in its manner of living. May we be spiritually "squeaky clean" in the eyes of God as GODLINESS marks our life inside and out!

Have a great day LIVING A GENUINELY CLEANSED LIFE IN CHRIST!

Don't Squeak! Shine! (part 2 of 2)

As we noted yesterday, it has often been said that "It is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease." Sometimes children will do just about anything to get the attention of their parents, even if it is negative attention. As children of God are we growing up in OUR FAITH so that instead of being whiners and complainers we are pressing on under His gracious guidance? What does our life declare with regard to OUR FAITH in God? Are we noted for whining or SHINING?

Paul urged those at Philippi to . . .
"(14) DO ALL THINGS WITHOUT GRUMBLING OR QUESTIONING, (15) that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you SHINE AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD, (16) holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain." (Philippians 2:14-16 ESV)

As Paul wrote these words, his mind may have gone back to the history of Israel's wandering in the wilderness. Though the expression "crooked and twisted generation" described the world at the time of Paul's writing and is unfortunately a right description of our world today, it was also the description found in the song of Moses. (Deuteronomy 32:5) That generation under Moses' leadership was filled with grumblers and complainers. Such character would seem to have been a declaration to the nations around them that they did not believe their God was able to take care of them and fulfill His promises. What does our life say?

Is our life marked by a SHINING FAITH in God's ability to sustain and ultimately bring about the promises He has made? Instead of grumbling and complaining are we seen to possess an UNWAVERING TRUST in His Sovereignty and power? As Christians, our life should reflect Christ and the joyful peace that is ours from living life in the hands of God. Living life in a manner revealing we know God can get us from where we are to where He ultimately wants us will cause us to SHINE in an attractive manner that others may be drawn to find the Divine source of such a life perspective. May our life be marked by a SHINING that reveals we know unquestionably how much we are blessed through living life connected to God and His Will.

Have a great day EXHIBITING AN UNTARNISHED FAITH!

Don't Squeak! Shine! (part 1 of 2)

It has often been said that "It is the squeaky wheel that gets the grease." It may not take long for such squeaking to get on one's nerves. The expression relative to life is that though there may be the need for many things to be done, the attention often goes to those who keep doing the most COMPLAINING or make the loudest protests to attract attention with the hope the service they desire will be granted. Perhaps they are at times given into just to stop the noise.

If we tire so easily of GRUMBLING, MURMURING, and COMPLAINING, remember God is fully aware of all of it that goes on. What does He think of it all? Does He see a real lack of contentment even in the midst of plenty? Does He notice a great lack of appreciation? Is He witnessing a lot of whining from those who just want their own way regardless of what may really be best for all? And is all of this going on due to a lack of focus on God, all that He has graciously provided, and the manner in which He desires life to be lived?

There is a sense in which COMPLAINING can be a clear sign of lack of trust in God. Consider Israel during the time of their journey through the wilderness. Though continually provided for during their travels (note Deuteronomy 8:3-4), the GRUMBLING and MURMURING arose again and again with the desire even voiced on more than one occasion of returning to Egypt. In the 106th psalm we find a history lesson of Israel's COMPLAINING and lack of trust in God. About halfway through this psalm we read. . .

"(24) Then they despised the pleasant land, HAVING NO FAITH IN HIS PROMISE. (25) THEY MURMURED IN THEIR TENTS, AND DID NOT OBEY the voice of the LORD. (26) Therefore he raised his hand and swore to them that he would make them fall in the wilderness, (27) and would make their offspring fall among the nations, scattering them among the lands." (Psalm 106:24-27 ESV)

This is what their COMPLAINING brought them. Due to their lack of faith in God, that generation fell in the wilderness, not receiving the blessing God had been leading them toward. The "squeaky wheel" may get attention, but not necessarily that of blessing. With God, it appears to not be the "squeaky wheel" that gets what they want, but the "wheel" that is willing to following along with Him in trusting faith the direction He is leading. Therefore, those to come who did follow, received the blessing. May we allow God's direction in a manner that truly reveals we believe He knows what He is doing and that our greatest blessings are still yet to come.

Have a great day LEAVING THE WHINE BEHIND!

To Glorify God!

Reading through the last chapter of John's Gospel yesterday, I was again struck by the manner in which Jesus referred to the death Peter would at some point face. After Jesus seems to have reaffirmed His relationship with Peter and the leadership role Peter would have (John 21:15-17) along with the other Apostles, we read. . .

"(18) Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.' (19) (This he said to show BY WHAT KIND OF DEATH HE WAS TO GLORIFY GOD.) And after saying this he said to him, 'Follow me.'" (John 21:18-19 ESV)

Perhaps we often think that it is only IN LIVING that we can glorify God. However, such can take place even IN FACING DEATH. And with the LIFE LIVED with such a focus we are better prepared to do so as DEATH can then be faced with more confidence because it is not the end, but rather a doorway into eternal glory in Christ.

Tradition tells us Peter's DEATH came by crucifixion. However that tradition also tells us Peter did not consider himself worthy to die in the same manner as his Lord, so he asked to be crucified upside down. In Acts we read of Herod's attempt to kill Peter after seeing how it pleased the Jews for James the brother of John to have been put to DEATH. (Acts 12:1-5) However, there was still work for Peter to do, so his end did not yet come. Peter's life was spared on that occasion and his work for the Lord continued. (Acts 12:6-11) He LIVED LIFE to the glory of God and was ready for when it was time to glorify God even in his DEATH.

This was the same attitude of Paul as he expressed in in his letter to the church at Philippi where we read. . .
"(20) as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage NOW AS ALWAYS CHRIST WILL BE HONORED IN MY BODY, WHETHER BY LIFE OR BY DEATH. (21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:20-21 ESV)

Jesus noted it is those who endure to the end who will be saved. (Matthew 10:22; 24:13) Remaining faithful to the Lord IN LIFE prepares us for glorifying Him still even IN DEATH. We may not know how we will die. It could be sudden, or it might be a more drawn out process through which our faith is put on display. In whatever manner it comes, may our prayer also be to the end that in it the Lord will be glorified.

Have a great day KNOWING LIFE'S NOT LOST LIVED FOR THE LORD!
