An Icon!

When we think of an icon, what comes to mind? Some would think of someone noted as an all-time rock'n'roll icon (i.e. Elvis, the Beatles, etc.). Perhaps others would think of a sports icon (i.e. Babe Ruth). Or it could be a movie star, an individual REPRESENTING statesmanship, or REPRESENTATIVE of some other sphere of life. Still others might think of a religious symbol or statue (i.e. a cross, a menorah, etc.). Then there are the computer icons which we click on to bring up particular programs. Those images on the computer screen REPRESENT the program with which they are associated.

Have we ever considered our own life being an icon? Does such a thought sound a little vain? There is a critical sense in which we need to consider what it is others see our life most REPRESENTING! What comes to mind when others consider the quality our life represents? How much does it REPRESENT CHRIST?

Though some are too blind to see Jesus (i.e. 2 Corinthians 4:4) and others are too focused on other things to see Him (i.e. 2 Corinthians 3:12-14), is Jesus REPRESENTED by our manner of living? With regard to those who had accepted Christ, Paul went on in this letter to state. . .

"(17) Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (18) And we all, with unveiled face, BEHOLDING THE GLORY OF THE LORD, ARE BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:17-18 ESV)

The Greek word translated "image" is "eikona" (from "eikon"), which "denotes an image; the word involves the two ideas of representation and manifestation." [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] It is from this Greek word that we get the English "icon". (Paul also used this word in Romans 8:29.) In his letter to the church at Corinth Paul was pointing out that in Christ we are being transformed (Greek: "metamorphoo", being changed into another form) into the IMAGE OF THE LORD. As Jesus' life was an "icon" of God, our life is to become an "icon" for the Lord. We are to live our life REPRESENTATIVE OF HIS ESSENCE!

We are flesh, but that is not all there is to our makeup. We were created to be spiritual beings. Is only the image (icon) of the first man (Adam) being seen in our life, or on a closer look can people observe the image (icon) of Christ? (1 Corinthians 15:49)

We are not a statue, but our spiritual stature is to be that of A LIVING REPRESENTATION OF OUR LORD. May our life truly continue to reflect more and more His glory as we allow God's spiritual metamorphosis do its work in and through us.

Have a great day LIVING THE LIFE THAT STANDS FOR CHRIST!

"Late"!

Some people are so prone to being late, it is sometimes said they would be late to their own funeral. It is interesting that in the English language we also use the word "late" for someone who has died, especially very recently. Talking about such someone might refer to "the late President Ronald Reagan", or "the late John Henry", etc. However, someone has recently noted that though Jesus died over 2000 years ago, nobody has ever referred to Him as "the late Jesus." It was also stated that this was so not even among the heathens or found stated anywhere in history. Those of us who have come to know Jesus as the Son of God and Savior of the world can understand this with good reason. Though we may refer to the time when Jesus walked the face of this earth and died on the cross for our sins, He is not "the late" Jesus.

The Hebrew writer emphatically declared. . .
"JESUS CHRIST IS the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8 ESV)

The Hebrew writer also encouraged with reference to our Lord that. . .
"(25) Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since HE ALWAYS LIVES TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR THEM." (Hebrews 7:25 ESV)

JESUS IS the living Lord and therefore able to save us completely. And when it comes time for His glorious return, though we know not when that might be, it won't be late because God's timing is always right. Because HE LIVES may we courageously press on in life while waiting with eager expectation for life eternal with Him.

Have a great day LIVING LIFE FOR THE LIVING LORD!

Written To Endure!

Notes are scribbled on bits of paper that may later be thrown away. Love messages have been written in the sand, soon to be washed away by the incoming tide. (Hopefully that was not so with the love.) Choice statements have been chiseled in stone or engraved in metal. Perhaps our choice between pen and pencil relates to our confidence in what is being written down or how enduring we wish the writing to be. (I will write a love note to my wife in pen, but I only do crossword puzzles with a pencil and good eraser.)

In Jeremiah we read of a sad engraving among Judah.
"(1) The SIN OF JUDAH is WRITTEN WITH A PEN OF IRON; WITH A POINT OF DIAMOND it is ENGRAVED ON THE TABLET OF THEIR HEART, and on the horns of their altars," (Jeremiah 17:1 ESV)

The "pen of iron" and "point of a diamond" were hard tools used for engraving on stone. In the hardness of their hearts, sin had been ENGRAVED DEEP WITHIN. Having turned their backs on the Will of God, the people of Judah offered their sacrifices wherever and for whatever they chose.

Though the signs of sin may be evident on the surface, the real concern ought to be with regard to how deeply such is ENGRAVED ON THE HEART. It is the heart condition and what is cherished there that is of utmost importance. Whatever is written there is what will most impact our daily life. Therefore, what is it that is being ENGRAVED ON OUR HEART?

Perhaps we think we could never be guilty of idolatry. However, any object or activity loved more than God is idolatry. God and His Will must always have first place in our life.

What habits or practices are becoming ENGRAVED ON OUR HEART? Is there developing a practice of language that is not glorifying to God? Are we developing habits that are unhealthy (physically or spiritually) or addictions that are impure? Such can be extremely difficult to break free from; some things best never to have started.

Solomon urged. . .
"(3) Let not STEADFAST LOVE and FAITHFULNESS forsake you; bind them around your neck; WRITE THEM ON THE TABLET OF YOUR HEART. (4) So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man." (Proverbs 3:3-4 ESV)

"Steadfast love" for God and "faithfulness" to Him and His Will ought to be deeply ENGRAVED ON OUR HEART. As the Hebrew writer urged his readers to focus on the new covenant of Christ under which we are living, he referred back to when God stated a time would come when He would put His laws in their minds and WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS so that He would truly remain their God and they His people. (Hebrews 8:10; Heb 10:16) That is the message for us to TAKE TO HEART as well. The blessing that follows is that our sins will be remembered no more. (Hebrews 10:17) All this quoted by the Hebrew writer was actually revealed by God through Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 31:33-34)

May it truly be "steadfast love", "faithfulness", and God's Will that are ENGRAVED DEEP IN OUR HEART. He remaining our God and we His people will be a relationship that will endure for eternity.

Have a great day ALLOWING THE WRITING ON OUR HEART TO BE GOD'S!

Flexing For Others!

Muscles are made stronger and more useful through regular exercise. Idleness causes the muscles to shrink and strength to depart. The same is true with regard to exercising godliness in daily life. Through continuing to fulfill God's purposes we grow stronger spiritually and can then be of greater help to those around us. Someone has said, "A good exercise for the heart is bending down and helping another up." [original source unknown]

In Paul's letter to the church at Rome he stated. . .
"(1) We who are STRONG HAVE AN OBLIGATION to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (2) Let each of us please his neighbor FOR HIS GOOD, to BUILD HIM UP." (Romans 15:1-2 ESV)

When someone is physically strong, they often like to show off their muscles. To be spiritually strong means more is required of us. The Greek word translated "OBLIGATION" is "opheilo" and refers to owing or being indebted and is indicative of something that is of necessity to be done. The exercising of such an attitude takes into consideration not ourselves, but OTHER'S GOOD; that of which they are in need. It considers their failings in light of weakness and seeks to BUILD THEM UP rather than put them down.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica, he exhorted. . .
"And we urge you, brothers, ADMONISH THE IDLE, ENCOURAGE THE FAINTHEARTED, HELP THE WEAK, BE PATIENT WITH THEM ALL." (1 Thessalonians 5:14 ESV)

Different situations call for different approaches, but in each there is the need for patience. May the "flexing" of our spiritual strength not be the arrogance of spiritual superiority, but rather LOVING WILLINGNESS TO LIFT UP others who may be struggling. In this way we together can grow stronger in Christ. Whatever spiritual strength we possess, let it be used to the glory of God and the greater good of those around us.

Have a great day WITH A FIT HEART FOR GODLY LIVING!

Heartless Love?

What if someone were to say to you, "I love you, but my heart is not in it."? Would we not admit such would be a strange statement? How can love be there if THE HEART is not in it? Would it merely be empty words? Though this specific statement is not spoken, is it possible for the actuality to be reflected in the life?

As Jeremiah shared the warnings of God with the nation of Israel, he asked God a couple questions and made the observation. . .

"(1) Righteous are you, O LORD, when I complain to you; yet I would plead my case before you. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive? (2) You plant them, and they take root; they grow and produce fruit; YOU ARE NEAR IN THEIR MOUTH AND FAR FROM THEIR HEART." (Jeremiah 12:1-2 ESV)

Jeremiah went on to acknowledge God knew him and his HEART. However, what a sad picture of God's people; speaking as if they were right with God, but their HEARTS being far from Him. They were a people giving God LIP SERVICE, but their HEART was not in it!

Jesus found the same condition as He walked and taught among men. Though He was the long awaited Messiah, in view of those who continued to reject Him He stated. . .

"(7) You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: (8) 'This people HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR FROM ME; (9) in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'" (Matthew 15:7-9 ESV) [quoting Isaiah 29:13]

Aren't we glad that is not the picture today? How sad that we must admit the same condition is still around. But what is the picture of our own life? Have we been guilty of offering God lip service -- saying the words Christians ought to say and maybe even doing things Christians are expected to do -- while actually not having given Him OUR HEART? The genuine love demonstrated through the actions of our life begin with a RIGHT HEART RELATIONSHIP with God.

Though even under the old law there were outward signs of obedience, God has always desired the HEART TO BE IN IT! (i.e. Jeremiah 9:25-26) The same is true today. As Jeremiah acknowledged God knew his HEART, that is where God continues to look. (i.e. 1 Samuel 16:7; Acts 1:24) What is He seeing in us? May our life truly be built up from a love for God that takes in our HEART, soul, mind, and strength. (Mark 12:30) This will enable us to offer Him not merely lip service, but LIFE SERVICE!

Have a great day MAINTAINING A HEART CONNECTION WITH GOD!

Insistent Persistence!

Being PERSISTENT is defined as "continuing despite problems, incessant or unrelenting." It is indicative of one who does not give up easily. When people are non-responsive to our words or actions (or do not respond in the manner we wish) it is easy to get discouraged and give up on them. It takes GENUINE CONCERN AND LOVE to cause one TO KEEP ON KEEPONG ON in such situations. Praise God this is characteristic of His PERSISTENCE in revealing His Will.

During the time of the prophet Jeremiah, GOD'S PERSISTENCE and the response of His people was characterized as follows:

"(25) From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I HAVE PERSISTENTLY SENT all my servants the prophets to them, DAY AFTER DAY. (26) YET THEY DID NOT LISTEN to me OR INCLINE THEIR EAR, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers." (Jeremiah 7:25-26 ESV)

Such lack of response had been going on for quite some time. God even told Jeremiah that the people would not listen to him. (Jeremiah 7:27) How discouraging to be sent with a message knowing beforehand it would fall on deaf ears. However, God still sent Jeremiah with His message to continue and persistently declare to the nation. This response (or lack thereof) to GOD'S PERSISTENCE in warning, speaking, and sending His messengers to which there was no response is mentioned throughout the book of Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 7:13; 11:7; 25:3-4; 29:19; 32:33; 35:14-15; 44:4) GOD'S PERSISTENCE reflects how insistent He is on gaining a response even if it is only from a faithful few. It also illustrates how significant His Will is for mankind to understand.

Despite mankind's refusal to listen, God has continued to make Himself known through creation (Romans 1:20), by His messengers, through His Word, and through Christ. Praise God for HIS PERSISTENCE in spite of the persistent refusal to hear. Truly we are without excuse if we do not respond. Having accepted His message as significant for our life we should strive for the SAME PERSISTENCE in sharing it with others. The day will come when God's patience will come to an end. Each new day is a sign of God's gracious patience for now and an opportunity to respond. May our life be marked by a PERSISTENT RECEPTIVENESS to what He has declared as we live it and share it each day.

Have a great day NOT GIVING UP ON THOSE AROUND US!

Trained!

Someone by the name of Leslie E. Dunkin has related having observed her father training a dog they had. Her father would put a piece of meat or biscuit on the floor near the dog and say, "No!" and the dog knew not to touch it. In fact the dog's focus never went to the meat. It seemed the dog knew if he looked that direction the temptation would be too much to handle. Instead, the dog kept his focus on her father's face. Therein she learned the lesson all of us need to learn when it comes to temptation; keeping our focus directed up to the Master's face.

How often has temptation gotten the best of us because that is where we KEPT LOOKING; at the object of the temptation? Our eyes need to move from it. Our eyes need to be lifted above it. Otherwise the enticing continues.

Consider a contrast between Jesus and three of His disciples. When Jesus went to the garden to pray prior to His arrest and crucifixion, he took Peter, James, and John further into the garden with Him than He did the other disciples. Knowing both what He faced and what they would, he exhorted them with regard to THEIR FOCUS.

We read. . .
"(40) And when he came to the place, he said to them, 'PRAY THAT YOU MAY NOT ENTER INTO TEMPTATION.' (41) And HE withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and KNELT DOWN AND PRAYED, (42) saying, 'Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.' (43) And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. (44) And BEING IN AN AGONY HE PRAYED MORE EARNESTLY; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (45) And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, (46) and he said to them, 'Why are you sleeping? RISE AND PRAY THAT YOU MAY NOT ENTER INTO TEMPTATION.'" (Luke 22:40-46 ESV)

Jesus was in anguish over what He knew He was about to endure on behalf of the sins of the world. There was the need for a greater resolve to move through it. To do so, HIS FOCUS was kept ON THE FATHER and THE FATHER'S WILL. This is where Jesus twice urged THE FOCUS of the disciples in exhorting them to "PRAY THAT YOU MAY NOT ENTER INTO TEMPTATION." Temptation comes in various forms, but always strikes at a desire or weakness within us. If there were no desire, there would be no temptation. Therefore we MUST FOCUS away from that wrong desire and FOCUS ON GOD with a steadfast desire for His Will to be done. Keeping the FOCUS ON HIM will also aid us in seeing the way of escape He provides. (1 Corinthians 10:13) May the reality of temptation prompt us toward diligence in prayer; keeping the eyes lifted to our Master's face.

Have a great day KEEPING THE FOCUS TRAINED ON GOD!

Guard It!

What we deposit in the bank is what we can draw from. That is what we have available for our use. When it is properly valued we tend to guard it. If it has been entrusted to us by another, then we should surely safeguard it closely. If it is counterfeit, we would neither guard it nor try to use it.

Paul urged Timothy. . .
"(20) O Timothy, GUARD THE DEPOSIT ENTRUSTED TO YOU. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge,' (21) for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you." (1 Timothy 6:20-21 ESV)

As Paul noted false teachers earlier in this letter (1 Timothy 6:3-4), they were ones drawing from that which was not the truth. It was babble and ideologies that contradicted the truth and was falsely called "knowledge". Those who accepted it would only find themselves departing from the faith. Therefore, Timothy was urged to "guard the DEPOSIT ENTRUSTED" to him; which would have been the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was from the truth of the GOSPEL OF JESUS that Timothy's life was to be based and his teaching was to be drawn.

Are we also GUARDING that truth entrusted to us? Recognizing it is from the GOSPEL OF JESUS that life is drawn -- since it is only through Christ that we now have access to the Father (John 14:6) -- for our sake and the sake of others it is what we must steadfastly hold onto. Though others may be banking on other ideologies, let us continue to base our life choices on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ. It is in Jesus and the "Good News" relative to Him that we have God's grace with us.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING HOW TRULY GOOD THE GOOD NEWS IS!

"But I Am Only...!"

When we have been called upon to do certain things, how often have we responded, "But I am only...!" and those words were followed by whatever we felt disqualified or made us unsuitable for the task? Do we have limitations? Yes! Could we use more experience? Probably, but experience comes from doing!

Note Jeremiah's initial response when God called him to be His spokesman.

"(4) Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, (5) 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.' (6) Then I said, 'Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, FOR I AM ONLY A YOUTH.'" (Jeremiah 1:4-6 ESV)

How young was Jeremiah? I don't know. However, it doesn't seem to matter how old or young individuals are, the same sort of response is too often given. Jeremiah was told, "Do not say, 'I am only a youth'". (Jeremiah 1:7) When we read in the Scriptures something that someone is told not to say, we would do well to take that to heart as well. God made it clear to Jeremiah that He had plans for him even before he was born. Jeremiah was also encouraged that God would be with him as he went out and spoke whatever God commanded him. (Jeremiah 1:7-8)

"I'm too young!" "I'm too old!" "I'm just not that gifted!" And on the list goes. You are not too young to be used by God. We don't get too old to be of some kind of service either. Youth are not the church of tomorrow, but are a part of it today and we are all to be involved together in the work of the Lord. When it comes to being a worker for the Lord, there is enough for all of us to become involved. Regardless of age, being a member of the Body of Christ (the church) we are to find our part whether it be speaking God's message, serving, teaching, exhorting or encouraging, contributing generously (of either money or time or both), leading by position or example, being merciful, etc. (note Romans 12:7-8)

The key in all of this is to simply be willing to go, do and say whatever the Lord has asked of us. Perhaps if we begin thinking in terms of "only being" A CHRISTIAN and a SERVANT OF GOD, then we will be more easily compelled to involve ourselves in the works that characterize those designations. Such will remind us of our relationship to God and Whose interests we are to be serving. God has not given us life for nothing. Regardless of age let us search out and accept the part He desires us to fulfill.

Have a great day ACCEPTING THE CALL OF THE ONE WHO KNOWS US BEST!

Sharing HIS Mind! (part 5 of 5)

Though Jesus is Sovereign and to be acknowledged as our Lord and Master, sharing the mind of Christ does not make us arrogant. It should actually do the converse; HUMBLE US and prompt a greater sensitivity to other's needs. We need to remember that Jesus came to this earth with others in mind.

In Paul's letter to the church at Philippi we read. . .
"(4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. (5) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, (6) who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, (7) but MADE HIMSELF NOTHING, TAKING THE FORM OF A SERVANT, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, (8) HE HUMBLED HIMSELF by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV)

Jesus! Immanuel (meaning, "God with us", Matthew 1:23)! God in the flesh! (John 1:1-2 & 14) While urging the Christians at Philippi toward a healthy relationship with one another -- one that would occur through mindfulness of each other's needs -- Jesus was the supreme example Paul drew the attention toward. He HUMBLED Himself. He took on flesh; the form of humanity! And HE SERVED even to the point of death on a cross. Therefore, for us to have the mind of Christ is to possess a mind that directs us into WILLING SERVICE; even that of a self-sacrificing kind. To possess the mind of a SERVANT is to have the mind of Christ!

Over the last few days we have considered several ways in which possessing the mind of Christ will impact our actions. However, we will realize the list goes on as we begin to think more and more in accordance with His Will. In all aspects of our life, may it truly be directed and led by the mind of Christ. Sharing His mind we can then appropriately become His eyes, mouth, hands, and feet in this world.

Have a great day FINDING GREATNESS IN HUMBLE SERVICE!

Sharing HIS Mind! (part 4 of 5)

Having the mind of Christ -- sharing His manner of thinking -- what is that prompting in our life? Yes, our focus ought to be centered on Christ as the Lord of our life, but how do we see those around us?

What do we note from the example of Jesus in the following passage?
"(35) And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. (36) When he saw the crowds, HE HAD COMPASSION FOR THEM, because they were harassed and helpless, LIKE SHEEP WITHOUT A SHEPHERD" (Matthew 9:35-36 ESV)

Sheep don't do well on their own. They need a shepherd. They need guidance because they tend to wander. They panic and spook easily. They need tender loving care. How fittingly God's Word continually uses "sheep" as a metaphor for humanity.

In Mark's Gospel he records Jesus having such COMPASSION ON THE CROWDS when what was needed by the disciples and Himself was some rest. (Mark 6:30-34) Having the mind of Christ is to set our own self aside and recognize the great need of others. Being Christ-minded ought to prompt us to have COMPASSION FOR LOST SOULS. He did not look at wandering souls and write them off. He saw them as lost, but not as a lost cause. He knew much of the leadership they had was not good and desired to be their shepherd. Are we seeing the same need of those around us?

Don't we live in a world very much in need of proper guidance? Doesn't the direction the world is going make that clear? As we look at those around us, we need to do so with thoughts of COMPASSION that lead us to strive to lead others to Christ, the Good Shepherd. (John 10:11) May we so be touched so that prompted by a HEART OF COMPASSION we will develop a greater passion for reaching out to the lost.

Have a great day TOUCHED BY HUMANITY'S DILEMMA!

Sharing HIS Mind! (part 3 of 5)

We are surrounded by so many varied ways of thinking. The world (with the devil behind it) strives to get us to think as it does. We are faced with deceit and lies, the changing of labels, rationalization of wrong in an attempt to make it appear okay, etc. So many varied ideologies bombard our thinking in clever and subtle ways to which we must remain on guard. Sharing the mind of Christ means all of life is to be viewed from HIS PERSPECTIVE, rather than that of the world.

In Paul's letter to the church at Corinth we read. . .
"(14) The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they ARE SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED. (15) The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. (16) 'For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?' BUT WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST." (1 Corinthians 2:14-16 ESV)

Have we ever been told what we believe is foolish? The things of God being considered foolish is nothing new. (i.e. 1 Corinthians 1:23) We may often wonder why people don't see things the way we do. When we are talking about righteousness and the Will of God it is because they have a worldly point of view. Many truths of God just do not make sense to the worldly mind. However, as we grow in our understanding of the Will of God we begin to realize many things are "SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED. To have the mind of Christ will prompt us to maintain a SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE of life. Thus, even when the things around us don't appear they are going God's Way, we remember He is still ultimately in control and a time of reckoning is coming.

Sharing the mind of Christ helps us see life more clearly, rather than falling prey to the blindness of those who refuse to see. The more we know Christ the more we see through His eyes and the easier it becomes to SPIRITUALLY DISCERN how we ought to live and respond to life around us. May we continue growing in our understanding of what the Will of the Lord is.

Have a great day SEEING LIFE THROUGH SPIRITUAL EYES!

Sharing HIS Mind! (part 2 of 5)

Having the mind of Christ -- sharing His way of thinking -- should prompt us to act and speak in a similar manner to which He did as He walked this earth. Sharing His mind ought to cause us to center the focus of our life where His was. One of the places where we glimpse that centered focus is in the prayer He offered in the garden scene prior to His arrest and crucifixion.

We read. . .
"(41) And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, (42) saying, 'Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, NOT MY WILL, BUT YOURS, BE DONE.'" (Luke 22:41-42 ESV)

Have we not known what it is to struggle with the "wills"? We feel like doing one thing, but our mind is telling us something different. Our mind tells us what we ought to do even though the desire leads another direction. Jesus knew full well what He was facing and His flesh desired some other way, but His mind was seeing the FATHER'S WILL. We are blessed because it was the WILL OF THE FATHER that won out and was followed.

To have the mind of Christ is to follow our Lord's example of allowing the WILL OF THE FATHER to dominate our choices in life. It is to prompt us to put GOD'S WILL FIRST AND FOREMOST above our own, knowing that is what will always produce the greatest blessing for ourselves and others. We too need to pray "not my will, but YOURS BE DONE" as we focus on carrying out the GREATEST WILL for our life. May this become more and more an aspect of the mind of Christ that we share.

Have a great day GIVING GOD'S WILL CENTER STAGE IN ALL THE SCENES OF LIFE!

Sharing HIS Mind! (part 1 of 5)

Some people are always willing to "share their mind" or give others a "piece of their mind." They have an opinion and feel entitled to share it whether others mind it or not. However, every mind is not worth sharing.

A few weeks ago an earlier "teEn-MAIL" focus centered on 1 Peter 4:1-2. (09/28/2010) There Paul urged. . .

"(1) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with THE SAME WAY OF THINKING, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God." (1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV)

Other translations use the expressions: "the SAME MIND" (KJV, ASV, NKJV), "SAME ATTITUDE" (NIV, NLT), and "learn to THINK LIKE HIM" (The Message). The Greek word is "ennoia" which primarily refers to "a thinking, idea, consideration" and "denotes purpose, intention, design." The word is made up of "en" (in) and "nous" (mind). [source: W. E. Vine's Exp. Dict. Of N.T. Words] What most is being kept "IN MIND"? Is it what our Lord has IN MIND?

Thinking on this further for my sermon yesterday (Sunday, 10/17/2010), I considered some of the ways in which CHRIST'S MIND is made evident in our life. Having the MIND OF CHRIST should prompt us to live and speak in a particular manner that reflects His essence. Is that happening? Though we may not fully comprehend the MIND OF CHRIST there should still be ways in which HIS THINKING becomes our focus.

In Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth, he stated. . .

"(4) For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments (5) and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and TAKE EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE TO OBEY CHRIST," (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 ESV)

If "every thought" is being taken "captive to obey Christ", then every action and word should arise from that SURRENDERED MIND; our whole being having surrendered to Him and His Will. Lord Willing over the next four days we will consider at least four ways in which such is revealed. May our mind find the great blessing of remaining under His Sovereignty.

Have a great day WITH AN OPEN MIND TO HIS!

Firmly Established!

Back in the days when milk was delivered by means of a horse-drawn wagon, there was a milkman who would always refer to his spiritual stature with the same old sentence, "I'm not making much progress, but praise God, I'm established." One very soggy Spring morning -- as he was out on his route -- his wagon got stuck in some deep mud. As his horse pulled to no avail, one of his Christian brothers who never quite accepted the milkman's testimony, came along and looked over the situation. Finally, with a smile, he said, "Well, Brother, I see you're not making much progress, but you're sure established!"

Being firmly established spiritually does not mean going nowhere. It is not a picture of remaining idle. Consider Paul's exhortation to those at Corinth where he wrote. . .

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, BE STEADFAST, IMMOVABLE, ALWAYS ABOUNDING IN THE WORK OF THE LORD, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV)

Though Paul referred to steadfastness and being immovable, we are NOT LEFT THERE. We are to stand firm in our convictions to remain steadfast and established in the truth of God's Word and Love. This steadfastness is then to compel us to ABOUND IN HIS WORK!

Have a great day UNMOVED FROM DILIGENT SERVICE FOR GOD!

Significant Day!

If I were to ask you what is the most significant day of the year, what might you say? Would it be a holiday, birthday, anniversary, or some other day dotting the calendar that is held special?

What would you consider the most significant day of the week? Friday, because it is the end of the school and work week? Saturday as a play day? Sunday as the first day of the week and communion together with the Lord? Or some other day on which you have some special activity regularly scheduled?

When it comes to days in this sense, remember Paul's exhortation where he wrote. . .

"One person esteems ONE DAY AS BETTER than another, while another esteems ALL DAYS ALIKE. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind." (Romans 14:5 ESV)

Whatever the view, Paul urged it to be done "in honor of the Lord." (Romans 14:6 ESV) However, though we might affirm the judgment day or the day of the coming of the Lord as being at the top of the list of days of most significance, there is another day of which the paramount importance is not to be missed.

In view of our eternal rest to come and the need for obedience to enter it, the Hebrew writer stated. . .

"(6) Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, (7) again he appoints a certain day, 'TODAY,' saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, 'TODAY, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.'" (Hebrews 4:6-7 ESV)

TODAY is the day for changes to be made. We cannot change the past and tomorrow has not yet come. TODAY is the only day we presently have in which to live. Recognizing TODAY is the first day of the rest of our life, what we do with it is very significant. To procrastinate is a gamble because we are not promised tomorrow. (note James 4:14-15)

We are to live mindful of the significance of what we do TODAY in view of the eternity God desires to provide us. TODAY the heart is to be open to His Will. TODAY is the day to make certain our life is right with God. TODAY our life is to be used for His purposes. TODAY are opportunities that tomorrow may not provide to serve and fulfill God's desires. May TODAY truly be used "in honor of the Lord." By so doing we will be making the most of our days.

Have a great TODAY TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

"Down-To-Earth!"

Getting "DOWN TO EARTH"! The expression relates to getting down to actions or ideas that are practical and realistic. They accomplish what they need to accomplish. The farmer does it literally by getting into the dirt to plant the seed that promises an eventual harvest. It is indicative of the person who can take lofty ideas and convey them in practical applications more easily understood. Sometimes the arrogant have to get off their "high horse" and humbly get "DOWN-TO-EARTH" by settling into serving rather than being served.

When it came to our sins and the salvation of our soul, God got "DOWN-TO-EARTH" to accomplish what was necessary. In referring to Jesus, Paul stated. . .

"(6) WHO, THOUGH HE WAS IN THE FORM OF GOD, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, (7) but MADE HIMSELF NOTHING, TAKING THE FORM OF A SERVANT, being born in THE LIKENESS OF MEN. And being found in human form, (8) he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, EVEN DEATH ON A CROSS." (Philippians 2:6-8 ESV)

In giving Himself, Jesus accomplished what the law was powerless to do. (Romans 8:3-4) Though He had no sin, He became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21) in order for us to become right with God. Praise God for His "DOWN-TO-EARTH" method of adequately dealing with sin and also providing an earthly example -- in the life of Christ -- of how we ought to live in this realm to please Him. Let us live "DOWN-TO-EARTH" lives now through service to His glory as we look UP-TO-HEAVEN for the greater glory to come.

Have a great day HUMBLY AND PRACTICALLY LIVING OUT OUR FAITH!

Remember The Forgetter!

We often forget to remember what should be kept in mind. There is a member of our congregation who has frequently expressed, "My forgettery works too well." We also find ourselves remembering what we should (or would like to) forget.

Perhaps part of the reason we forget things is we live busy lives and have so much to remember. That is why I love "sticky notes" on which to write reminders to be placed where I will see them when they need to be seen.

Reading through Isaiah yesterday I was struck by the following passage. God, speaking through Isaiah stated. . .

"(25) I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I WILL NOT REMEMBER YOUR SINS. (26) PUT ME IN REMEMBRANCE; let us argue together; set forth your case, that you may be proved right." (Isaiah 43:25-26 ESV)

God does not need to be reminded of anything. He knows us full well. Our life is naked and exposed before Him. (Hebrews 4:13) He knows our life from beginning to end. However, in His great mercy -- in our continued relationship with Him -- He has chosen to FORGET OUR SINS. In love God is willing to put them BEHIND HIS BACK. (Isaiah 38:17) Unlike those who seem to find joy in holding past sins in front of other's faces, God is willing to FORGET OUR SINS. Therefore we should be encouraged to leave them in the past as well as we walk on freed from that weight of guilt removed from our life.

Let us remember what God is willing to do and accept the blessing He provides as we walk on with Him, seeking to please Him in all we do and say. May we never forget Him Who has been willing to REMOVE FROM REMEMBRANCE the sins we have committed. God blots them out! (note also Acts 3:19-20) The page becomes blank! Let us learn to leave them behind as well.

Have a great day PRAISING THE GREATEST FORGETTER!

Know It!

People have FAINTED from fear at the sight of danger. FAINTING has taken place due to being greatly surprised. Becoming exhausted from work through the heat of the day has also caused people to FAINT. Sometimes youth view themselves as invincible, but even the exuberance and vitality of young age sometimes meets its match. A reality of life is there are many things that can impact us to the point of inhibiting or stopping life activity. Such makes clear the limitations we experience in the flesh. Though we can assist one another during such times, even that support has its limitations. However, praise GOD He is THE FAINTLESS ONE to look to during the trying times.

In Isaiah we are encouraged by the following focus:
"(28) HAVE YOU NOT KNOWN? Have you not heard? THE LORD is the everlasting GOD, THE CREATOR of the ends of the earth. HE DOES NOT FAINT OR GROW WEARY; his understanding is unsearchable. (29) HE GIVES POWER TO THE FAINT, and to him who has no might he increases strength. (30) EVEN YOUTHS SHALL FAINT AND BE WEARY, and young men shall fall exhausted; (31) but THEY WHO WAIT FOR THE LORD SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; THEY SHALL WALK AND NOT FAINT." (Isaiah 40:28-31 ESV)

This past weekend as I headed up the cider pressing competition at the Annual Cider Press Youth Rally in Cashmere, WA., though the actual grinding and pressing by each team only lasted 15 minutes (during each 30 minute segment through a 4 hour period), I saw teens who began thinking the strength of their arms would last long. However, after just a few minutes of cranking they were happy to let a fresh arm step in to continue while they rested before taking another turn. As I would periodically count down the time left, sometimes they were surprised when they realized they were only at the halfway point. Then, when down to the last two minutes and the last minute and the final ten second countdown, they would try to give it all they had for the completion. It was great watching the teams work well together. Altogether -- during the four hours of the competition -- they pressed 428 half-gallon jugs of cider. Nevertheless, it was a workout.

In life's challenges, we may experience physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual exhaustion at times. FAINTNESS of a sort may be felt and we may wonder how much longer we can keep going. It is especially through these times we need to remember THE FAINTLESS ONE Who is mindful of all we are experiencing. It is to Him we are to look for the RENEWAL OF STRENGTH He provides as we press on one moment and step at a time. As we are patient regarding His timing, ultimately with His help let us know that the one Who "DOES NOT FAINT OR GROW WEARY" is always there to help us "WALK AND NOT FAINT." May that assurance give us the courage and desire to keep on keeping on regardless of what we face in life. This will also provide the extra we may need to help others around us facing their own life challenges. Let our focus remain on the One of endless strength to sustain us to the end!

Have a great day PRESSING ON IN THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD!

Falling!

Falling hurts. The body can become bruised, the skin can get scraped up, and bones can be broken. It can also be deadly. However, the most painful and devastating falling may be that of falling OUT OF LOVE. Perhaps you have been hurt in the process of parents or other close relations falling OUT OF LOVE and separating. You may have experienced the pain of someone falling OUT OF LOVE with you. Maybe it was you who did the falling.

It seems we live in a world where people far too easily fall OUT OF LOVE with one another and my heart goes out to those impacted by such. Sometimes it can seem easier for a broken bone to heal than for the heart to do so when relationships fail. Though there may be many factors setting the stage for falling OUT OF LOVE, often it boils down to pure selfishness on the part of either one or both individuals. Too many people focus more on what they want than on what they can contribute to a relationship. Loving in the manner God intended must be seen as a choice and be characterized as GIVING and SELFLESS. Is that not the manner in which God has shown His love? It that not what was clearly demonstrated in the coming of Jesus into this world? If we do not focus on the significance of all involved, none of our relationships will be right, including the relationship with the Lord.

In Jude's short letter, he presented some encouragement, but also some very serious warnings. In verse twenty-one we read. . .
"(21) KEEP YOURSELVES IN THE LOVE OF GOD, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life." (Jude 21 ESV)

Though love is very much a part of God's Divine essence (1 John 4:8), Jude's urging implies it is possible to depart from the LOVE OF GOD. I think such falling away from the LOVE OF GOD must be due to a lack of fully recognizing how much love God has for us. To know He does, how could we possibly fall OUT OF LOVE with Him?

Because of their departure, the church at Ephesus was urged to remember from where they had fallen because they had abandoned their first love. (Revelation 2:4-5) They were in need of repentance and returning to the Lord.

Oh, how it must break God's heart to see so many who are not IN LOVE WITH HIM; especially those who were once in that love and then fell away. However, as long as there is life there is hope of the relationship being renewed. Praise God for the mercy that leads to eternal life!

There is a song which has been around for a number of years that goes: "I keep falling in love with Him over and over and over and over again. I keep falling in love with Him over and over and over and over again. He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by. Oh, what a love between my Lord and I. I keep falling in love with Him over and over and over and over again."

Yes, KEEP FALLING IN LOVE WITH HIM! May that characterize our relationship with the Lord so we never find ourselves falling OUT OF LOVE with Him. Then, with the focus properly centered in that relationship, our other relationships stand a better chance of falling into proper place as well. Let us GENUINELY AND SELFLESSLY LOVE as we value all the relationships we have.

Have a great day NURTURING A GODLY LOVE TO SUSTAIN ALL OUR RELATIONSHIPS!

In Awe Of The Awesome!

[In late October of 1998] I listened to the radio as John Glenn blasted off into space along with the rest of the crew of the space shuttle Discovery. I remember watching his first lift off on black and white television when I was in about the second grade. I also watched the coverage of his splash-down into the ocean following that first orbital flight. What a difference this flight [would] be for him from the first flight he made in that small Mercury Capsule. What breath-taking views he [would] again glimpse from above our planet. Man has made some awesome advances in technology, but still nothing more awesome than the universe God created for us to live. [Recent photos taken from the International Space Station looking down through the eye of a hurricane were amazing to see. What a perspective from high above!]

As the Psalmist said. . .
"(1) THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD, and THE SKY ABOVE PROCLAIMS HIS HANDIWORK." (Psalm 19:1 ESV)

As exciting, wonderful, and worthy of appreciation scientific advances might be, it is all still nothing compared to the AWESOME WORKS OF GOD'S HANDS, both IN CREATION and IN the BLESSINGS He offers for now and all eternity.

Have a great day IN AWE OF THE TRULY AWESOME!

Heritage!

At a fancy tea there were two fashionable and proper, high society ladies discussing their respective ancestries. The first woman boasted of her heritage going back to the days of William the Conqueror. Then with an air of superiority she asked the other woman how far her family went back. "I really don't know," the second woman responded. "You see, our family records were lost in the flood.?

Heritage! As God's children we have a rich one.

The Psalmist wrote. . .
"(5) For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have GIVEN ME THE HERITAGE OF THOSE WHO FEAR YOUR NAME." (Psalm 61:5 ESV)

Imagine all the great men and women of God with whom He has provided the means of us sharing in the heritage. What an ancestry! What a family! And what a reunion of which we will someday be able to be a part. And, yes, our family records do go back before the flood.

Have a great day KEEPING UP THE FAMILY NAME!

As God Intended!

There are various ways we can tell Fall is here. (1) The calendar tells us it has begun. (2) The temperature is dropping and we had a light frost on the ground this morning. (3) The leaves are changing colors and beginning to fall.

I would miss all the evergreen trees if I moved away from the Northwest, but I do enjoy the changing color of the leaves. Though we do have maple trees, oak trees, and others with leaves that change this time of year I know more of that is seen in other parts of the country. The trees are doing what they are intended to, just as God created them, and we know the leaves will return in the Spring.

God's creation is wonderful and beautiful to behold. And that includes mankind who remains in a proper relationship with Him to do what God created us to do.

The Psalmist wrote. . .
"(1) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; (2) but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. (3) HE IS LIKE A TREE PLANTED BY STREAMS OF WATER THAT YIELDS ITS FRUIT IN ITS SEASON, AND ITS LEAF DOES NOT WITHER. IN ALL THAT HE DOES, HE PROSPERS." (Psalm 1:1-3 ESV)

As we admire the trees, let us consider our own individual life. Are we planted where we receive proper nourishment and so our leaves do not wither? Are we fruitful in season? May this be the picture of our life.

Have a great day ROOTED IN GOD!

Playing Ball!

Playing ball (playing catch or baseball) with others is a great way to pass some time. Enjoying the game can be appreciated as a thing of leisure. However, playing ball can have its serious side. The expression "play ball" is an Americanism meaning to begin the game of baseball, but has also taken on the general meaning of being an invitation to join in and COOPERATE with others. However, when someone is described as playing "hardball" it is indicative of one who has become aggressive in trying to achieve their aim.

To "play ball" with God we must consider His aims and rules. As He invites us to join in we must do so with a willingness to COOPERATE with Him and then with each other. God's Will is going to prevail (Proverbs 19:21) regardless of what we do and if we refuse to COOPERATE we will only find ourselves in a position of playing "hardball" against Him.

In an oracle of God concerning Jerusalem during the time of Isaiah, we find a severe warning directed at a steward named Shebna. (Isaiah 22:15) It appears Shebna received this sharp rebuke after developing a sense of pride with regard to himself. (Isaiah 22:16)

We read...
"(17) Behold, THE LORD WILL HURL YOU AWAY VIOLENTLY, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you (18) and WHIRL YOU AROUND AND AROUND, AND THROW YOU LIKE A BALL INTO A WIDE LAND. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master's house." (Isaiah 22:17-18 ESV)

Could we call that "hardball"? As the Scriptures warn, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18 ESV) Shebna had apparently created a tomb to establish his honor even after his death. However, he would be hurled out "like a ball" into another land.

We must remember we are not in the game of life alone. When we step out on our own we cease being a team player and place ourselves in a position to be thrown from the game! Are we continually striving to live under the "coaching" of God, COOPERATING with Him every step of the way? Don't let pride and self-will get in the way. It is only through following God's game plan that we can be assured of rounding the bases and getting safely home.

Have a great day REMAINING IN THE GAME WITH GOD!

Believe It!

Some things are so amazing they are hard to believe. Such good things can happen to us that we exclaim, "I can't believe it!" And though those may be the words we use, WE DO BELIEVE because we are experiencing it. Perhaps our view is such because we know we didn't deserve what we had received. Or we may have simply been amazingly surprised at the great kindness extended by another. Being overwhelmed as if it were a dream, we are greatly encouraged because WE KNOW it is real!

As John addressed the relationship we can have with God, he encouraged. . .

"(16) So WE HAVE COME TO KNOW AND TO BELIEVE THE LOVE THAT GOD HAS FOR US. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (17) By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world." (1 John 4:16-17 ESV)

Isn't GOD'S LOVE amazing? Even while we were still sinners God demonstrated HIS LOVE by sending His Son as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (Romans 5:8; 1 John 4:10) Living in Christ we are the recipients of God's blessings both now and for eternity. It is not presumptive to acknowledge the salvation God has said is ours in Christ. TO KNOW was one of the reasons for which John wrote (1 John 5:13) and that knowing should fill us with confidence as we move through each day God provides.

Every blessing and promise of God is a declaration of HIS GREAT LOVE for us. Through God's Word He has told us HE LOVES us. Through His work of redemption God has demonstrated how much HE LOVES us. And the fact He wants us to remain in a covenant relationship with Him and to abide (dwell or live) in us also reveals how much HE LOVES us; the closeness of the relationship He desires to exist.

Yes, having "come to know" HIS LOVE, let us forever believe it. Let us help others come to understand it is for them too if they will also unite their life to the Father in Christ. May we never question how much God truly does LOVE us.

Have a great day LIVING LIFE APPROPRIATELY RESPONSIVE TO GOD'S GREAT LOVE!

Them Or Us?

When we find ourselves struggling to LOVE (or like) someone, is it really always about them? Or on further honest self-evaluation, could we really find it is about us. There are times when someone despises another, not realizing it is actually because that individual reminds them too much of themselves; their own short comings. Sometimes people are also simply jealous of the good in others and decide they don't want to be around them. Perhaps there are also the times when opportunity has not been taken to really get to know the other person and therefore their character is misjudged.

Part of the tendency in all of this dates way back into the history of mankind. John, making reference to the first human family to walk the face of the earth (Genesis 4), wrote. . .

"(11) For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that WE SHOULD LOVE one another. (12) WE SHOULD NOT BE LIKE CAIN, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And WHY DID HE MURDER HIM? BECAUSE HIS OWN DEEDS WERE EVIL AND HIS BROTHER'S RIGHTEOUS." (1 John 3:11-12 ESV)

Where was the LOVE God has expected since the beginning of time? Where was the fault? Cain was at odds with his brother Abel, but it was because of sin in himself, not in the life of his brother. Cain allowed his own unapproved actions to lead to envy (or jealous resentment) which then led to hatred toward his brother which ultimately led to murder. This reveals how far the wrong focus can lead!

Feelings of our own guilt can cause us to have the wrong view toward others which can then lead to mistreating them. As John pointed out in the context of his writing here, let us remember the devil is behind such. Often our own proper attitude can dynamically change the way we view others and bring us to a point where we can actually be of help to them.

If we are wrong, let us not take it out on others. Let us not allow the devil to move us down his path. May we keep the door closed to him (note Genesis 4:7) as we accept God's guidance down His path and seek the best for others as well. Allowing LOVE to prompt our action and view toward others is always the righteous path to take.

Have a great day FOLLOWING THE DESIRE GOD HAD FROM THE BEGINNING!

What's Within? (part 2 of 2)

As we noted yesterday: Who or what is inside a house often determines the atmosphere within and gives rise to the kinds of activities that take place. It is also only that which is within that can come out. What is not within cannot come out. What comes out can only be what is already inside.

Yesterday we noted what James described as being unnatural. The same expectation ought to be applied to our life. Therefore we should give serious consideration regarding what it is that is filling us up.

Paul exhorted those at Colossae to . . .
"(16) LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN YOU RICHLY, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16 ESV)

The Greek word "enoikeo" (translated "dwell") means to dwell in, live in, or inhabit and is used metaphorically to describe that which is within to influence. Paul's exhortation was for the "WORD OF CHRIST" to be allowed to dwell in us richly or abundantly. What Paul then went on to list appears descriptive of a worshipful life. Such should mark our life whether we are with other Christians or by ourselves. If we have an abundance of the "WORD OF CHRIST" dwelling in us, it will be HIS WORDS that will determine the atmosphere in our life. Then, what better words would there be than HIS WORDS to come forth from within us.

Let us diligently focus on filling ourselves with an abundance of the "WORD OF CHRIST". May that be the well from which we draw the actions and words of our life. Drawing from the abundance of HIS WORDS we need not fear what slips out whether it be in word or deed.

Have a great day WITH THE TEACHING ABOUT AND THE WORDS OF CHRIST INFLUENCING EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIFE!

What's Within? (part 1 of 2)

Who or what is inside a house often determines the atmosphere within and gives rise to the kinds of activities that take place. It is also only that which is within that can come out. What is not within cannot come out. What comes out can only be what is already inside.

Now, you may wonder why I would point out something that seems so obvious. You might even be saying, "Of course, that is the only possibility." However, how much do we realize that with regard our own life?

In discussing the tongue, remember James pointed out. . .
"(9) With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. (10) From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT TO BE SO. (11) Does A SPRING pour forth from the same opening both FRESH AND SALT water? (12) Can A FIG TREE, my brothers, BEAR OLIVES, or A GRAPEVINE PRODUCE FIGS? NEITHER CAN A SALT POND YIELD FRESH WATER." (James 3:9-12)

Did you note how James also used very logical thinking based on what happens in nature? How UNNATURAL then it is FOR BOTH blessing and cursing to come from the same life. What does our life contain? What is being revealed by that which comes out?

We must be very careful what we allow to abide within us. If what is within us is right, we need not fear what comes out regardless of situation. Being serious about maintaining what is right within, we don't have to worry about what might slip out!

Lord Willing, tomorrow we will note the greatest safeguard for such in our life. May we prayerfully consider the inner well from which we draw our actions and words.

Have a great day MINDFUL OF WHAT FEEDS THE FRUIT OF OUR LIPS AND LIFE!

Everyone Everywhere!

Not all things in life relate to all people. Life is as multifaceted as people vary in characteristics. However, there are some things which do RELATE TO ALL no matter gender, race, social status, or geographic location. Among these are the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. It seems that just about every culture and society focuses on trying to see that such needs are met as much as possible. God is well aware of these needs (i.e. Matthew 6:31-32), but He wants us to remember the spiritual side of life as well. (Matthew 6:33) Realities associated with eternity dare not be neglected!

In speaking of Jesus in his letter to the church at Philippi Paul declared. . .

"(9) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the NAME that is ABOVE EVERY NAME, (10) so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE should bow, IN HEAVEN and ON EARTH and UNDER THE EARTH, (11) and EVERY TONGUE confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

Who is not included in this realization? It doesn't matter what sphere -- in Heaven, on earth, or under the earth -- the Supremacy of Jesus will ultimately be acknowledged. As now EVERY KNEE should bow and EVERY TONGUE should confess the Lordship of Jesus, a time is coming when ALL WILL be faced with the fullness of that truth!

Jesus came, revealing Himself as our means of salvation. (John 14:6; Acts 4:12) Now is the time (2 Corinthians 6:2) to acknowledge that before His judgment comes and condemnation is received. Let us help others recognize the need for that acknowledgement now because it is a reality which ALL WILL ultimately face! May we praise God for the sufficiency of salvation provided in Jesus!

Have a great day LIVING A BLESSED LIFE UNDER THE SOVEREIGNTY OF JESUS!

Praise The Lord!

Throughout the psalms we find God's people encouraged to praise the Lord. One of those passages is where we read. . .

"(1) PRAISE THE LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD! (2) Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore! (3) From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of THE LORD IS TO BE PRAISED!" (Psalm 113:1-3 ESV)

The Hebrew here translated PRAISE is "halal" and LORD is "yah". Together we have "hallelu-yah" which means "praise the Lord" and from which comes our word "hallelujah".

When is God to be praised? The psalmist stated, "From the rising of the sun to its setting." There are two ways to consider this expression. One is that from the east (rising sun) to the west (setting sun) God is to be praised in the sense of all people ought to praise the Lord. Another way of considering this is from the time the sun rises until it sets, meaning ALL DAY LONG God ought to be praised! In our conversation He is to be praised. In our actions He is to be praised. In our choices He is to be praised. In our thinking He is to be praised. At all times and in everything we do, God is to be praised! However, we should still not let the sun set on our praise. Through the day and even in the dark of night, may the Lord be praised with our whole being!

Have a great day LIVING LIFE AS A HALLELUJAH TO GOD!

Overcome!

We can be "overcome" by illness. We can also be "overcome" by grief in face of the loss of loved ones. We can be "overcome" by fatigue carrying out the varying tasks of life. However, the worst thing to be "overcome" by is sin because it is most often more ENSLAVING than is realized until it takes full MASTERY over the life.

In his warning to watch out for false prophets and teachers, Peter stated. . .

"(19) They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For WHATEVER OVERCOMES A PERSON, TO THAT HE IS ENSLAVED. (20) For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again ENTANGLED in them AND OVERCOME, THE LAST STATE HAS BECOME WORSE FOR THEM THAN THE FIRST." (2 Peter 2:19-20 ESV)

WHATEVER OVERCOMES! What (Who) has gained mastery OVER OUR LIFE? Whatever it is will be associated with whether we are SLAVES TO SIN or SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Romans 6:16-18) In that statement to the church at Rome, Paul seems to have implied it is one or the other. It is far too easy to get entangled in things to the point of it becoming difficult (if not impossible) to break the ties. That is why we must be careful with what (and whom) we allow our life to become most closely connected. Again, what is MASTERING our life?

Paul encouraged with regard to the life surrendered to the Will of God. . .

"(22) But now that you have been set free from sin and have become SLAVES OF GOD, the fruit you get leads to SANCTIFICATION and its end, ETERNAL LIFE." (Romans 6:22 ESV)

When our life is "overcome" by God, then we are enabled to "overcome" the things of this world. (note 1 John 5:4-5) When we find ourselves sliding back into those things, let us be honest about the control they still have and seriously seek God's help in moving far from them. May He remain the MASTER over our entire being so that we may be brought into His eternal blessings.

Have a great day ENTANGLED IN LIVING FOR GOD!
