Three Against One! (part 4 of 4)

"Three against one!" Again, considering Paul's encouragement to Timothy, may we in similar manner be encouraged as we remember the third of three resources God has provided.

"(7) for GOD GAVE US A SPIRIT not of fear but OF power and love and SELF-CONTROL." ( 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)

The word translated SELF-CONTROL here is "sophronismos" and refers to "an admonishing or calling to soundness of mind, to moderation and self-control." [Strong's Lexicon] It is not power and love gone wild, forging on without restraint, but rather with some SELF-CONTROL. Though we are empowered with gifts by God, those gifts are still used with reason and purpose. The spirit of SELF-CONTROL keeps us in subjection to God rather than being drawn the way of the world.

There are so many lives out of control because little or no SELF-CONTROL is being exercised. Some have been deceived to think setting SELF-CONTROL aside allows them to do more. However, the opposite is really true. When it comes to finances, SELF-CONTROL in spending leaves more to be used for better and greater things. Through SELF-CONTROL, time is not wasted and is thus used to accomplish more. Practicing SELF-CONTROL morally also enriches our character to do more in a quality manner.

Lack of SELF-CONTROL is to be controlled by the flesh rather than by the spirit God provides. Where there is a lack of SELF-CONTROL there is reason for fear; fear of the judgment of God. However, living by the spirit of power, love and SELF-CONTROL we are equipped to live and serve in a manner that glorifies God and fulfills His Divine purposes. May we allow the power of God's spirit to have the control over self.
