Recluse Religion!

Some live reclusive religious lives by merely teaching their own ideas and attempting to gain a following after themselves. Others live reclusive religious lives by completely disassociating themselves from the world. Though we are not to be of the world (in the sense of living after its likeness) we are still to recognize GOD'S DESIRE relative to the impact our Christian living can have on those around us.

Consider for a moment those who try to insulate (protect) their life by living in isolation. Keeping away from others they don't have to share what they have. Separated from community they also won't be drawn away from their personal desires. Therefore, isolation can be seen as very selfish. However, desiring to keep one's life protected against worldly influences has the interest of self in mind in a good way, but is such isolation the kind of life GOD DESIRES us to live?

Solomon noted. . .
"WHOEVER ISOLATES HIMSELF SEEKS HIS OWN DESIRE; he breaks out against all sound judgment." ( Proverbs 18:1 ESV)

There are varied interpretations of the main point of this passage, but let's consider it in light of what I've already drawn the attention toward. Though there are influences we should stay away from, isolating ourselves removes the blessing of the influences that are good; the benefits we can receive from others. Isolation also makes it impossible for us to impact the lives of others in a positive manner. Though walling ourselves in may protect us from some things, it does not guarantee perfect living. Even behind the walls of monasteries sin has taken place. Monasticism is not what the Scriptures direct us toward. We may love the times away from the world's influences when we spend a week at a summer Bible camp. There is great benefit from these times of less distraction as we focus on our relationship with God. However, monastic living -- remaining in isolation -- does not allow us to be the salt ( Matthew 5:13) and light ( Matthew 5:14-16) GOD DESIRES US as Christians to be.

The worst separation is that from God. Being properly connected to Him should serve to connect us with one another and in service to others as well. This would also then link us to GOD'S DEISRES rather than merely our own. As we carry out God's Will, the insulation against worldliness is provided by our being clothed in Christ. ( Galatians 3:27; Colossians 3:10; Romans 13:14)

Let us continue seeking what GOD DESIRES; for souls to be brought to Christ in order to be saved from their sins and receive the promise of eternal life with Him. May the light of Christ shine brightly through our daily lives.

Have a great day INSULATED, BUT NOT ISOLATED, AS WE DO GOD'S WILL!
Carl
