Armed!
When people walk through a dangerous area (either due to the possibility of a threat by man or beast) they often arm themselves with something that offers protection; perhaps a gun, a knife, a club or long stick, pepper spray, or something else that might ward off the danger. Not walking through a dangerous area by oneself is another means of protection.
As Peter was writing to Christians going through trying times, he drew attention to the suffering Christ did on our behalf. (i.e. 1 Peter 2:21; 3:18) Jesus did not give up. He pressed on to fulfill the purpose for which He had come. He is therefore an example for us when we face life's challenges. We are to press on. However, knowing we will be challenged, how are we EQUIPPED for standing firm and pressing on in the Will of God?
Peter urged. . .
"(1) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, ARM YOURSELVES WITH THE SAME WAY OF THINKING, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God." ( 1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV)
With what should we arm OUR MIND? The mind of Christ. Determination to keep on keeping on. A knowledge of God's Will. Faith in God. Confidence in God's assured hope and the ultimate victory He has promised. Etc.
Arming OUR MIND is a great defense against becoming discouraged and giving up when facing tough situations. Where we choose to focus can make a world of difference in strengthening us for pressing on. Attitude can be a great weapon. Outlook can have a dynamic impact on outcome.
Earlier in this letter Peter had urged the preparing of the mind for action. ( 1 Peter 1:13) The literal idea of the Greek there is to "gird up" as in tucking a long garment into the belt in order to make it easier to run. That is being prepared.
Ceasing from following the inclinations of the flesh and pressing on in Christ -- even when it means suffering for His Name -- reveals our MIND IS SET on living in accordance with God's purposes for our life. Thus we are focused toward living the rest of our life for the Will of God! May OUR MIND remain so armed!
Have a great day SHARPENING THE WEAPON OF THE MIND FOR VICTORIOUS LIVING!
