Our Footing!

It is easy to complain that life isn't fair. In fact, it is a reality of life in this earthly realm. People appear to get away with wrong and those who are right suffer for it.

Jesus exhorted. . .
"(43) You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' (44) But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, (45) so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:43-45 ESV)

Perhaps we could think that God should withhold all His blessings from the wicked. However, do we fully deserve God's blessings? Nevertheless, we do see that even the unjust receive the blessing of God's rains. Then there is the sense in which it is compounded when the unjust are seen to have taken the justs' umbrellas! Yes, life in this realm can seem so unfair. Though God's blessings are not always rightfully acknowledged, even the evil and the unjust receive some of them with the hope they would eventually recognize He is the gracious source of those blessings.

One of the psalmists looked about at all the evil going on around him and began to wonder if there was any value in being righteous. (Psalm 73:3-14) In his thinking he saw how he "HAD ALMOST STUMBLED." (Psalm 73:2) When he approached God he began to discern the ultimate reality of the wicked. They were not to be envied as he first began. (Psalm 73:3) Though the wicked might appear to be doing well, their life is not on a good foundation, but rather on SLIPPERY ground. (Psalm 73:18)

The important thing to consider is WHERE WE ARE STANDING. Rather than being envious of those who seem to be getting away with evil while our good may not always bring a good return, may we keep our focus where this psalmist ultimately placed his. We read. . .

"(23) Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. (24) You guide me with your counsel, AND AFTERWARD YOU WILL RECEIVE ME TO GLORY. (25) Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. (26) My flesh and my heart may fail, but GOD is the strength of my heart and MY PORTION FOREVER." (Psalm 73:23-26 ESV)

That was where he stood. That was the place that provided a sure footing for his life. Near God he had eternal hope while those far from God would perish. (Psalm 73:27)

We may not understand all the inequities and unfairness of life. Such is a reality of life due to many who take a self-centered rather than God-centered approach to living. We may wonder about the impact our good is having. However, let us NOT SLIP into envying the wicked. Knowing where we stand with God now encourages us of the eternal hope that is ours to come. May we continue to stand with God. Ultimately He is the One Who will sort it all out!

Have a great day KEEPING OUR FOOTING ON THE PATH WITH GOD!

Real Value!

People treasure different things and not everything treasured retains much -- if any -- of its original value. Jesus noted treasure that is impacted by moth, rust, or theft in contrast to treasure that is not subject to any of that. (Matthew 6:19-20) Therefore Jesus cautioned with regard to where the affections of our heart rest as He stated. . .

"(21) For WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, there YOUR HEART WILL BE also." (Matthew 6:21 ESV)

What is valued most by us? What is our heart truly focused on retaining? What we love is what we are most drawn toward and will tend to hold onto the tightest. It is therefore important to maintain a proper perspective with regard to where our HEART IS FOCUSED.

Recently reading through Psalm 119 again, I was struck by all of this where the psalmist wrote. . .

"(36) INCLINE MY HEART to your testimonies, and NOT TO SELFISH GAIN! (37) TURN MY EYES FROM LOOKING AT WORTHLESS THINGS; and GIVE ME LIFE IN YOUR WAYS." (Psalm 119:36-37 ESV)

It was not a relationship with "stuff", but rather one with God and His Ways that the psalmist knew had the greatest value with regard to life. Rather than "selfish gain" or "worthless things", GOD'S WAYS lead to what is truly life! Is that what our HEART IS INCLINED toward? Not all who think they are "living the life" have actually found it. In fact, they may be missing it completely; real life and that of eternal value! There is a lot in this life that can easily distract us. All that glitters is not necessarily gold. Therefore, an important move on our part is to turn the eyes more back toward God!

That of the greatest value is that which retains its value. We may find some enjoyment in the "stuff" of this life, but compared to eternity, all that is only for a moment. May our HEART BE INCLINED toward the life God desires us to enjoy as we seek life now and for eternity in His Ways.

Have a great day FINDING THE RICH LIFE IN THE LORD!

Planning Ahead!

Prior to our recent vacation we planned ahead by deciding what it would cost to camp, made lists of our camping supplies to make sure we had everything together, my wife came up with a menu so we knew what food we needed to buy, etc. We even planned where we would assemble with the church on Sunday. This past week I joined two others for a hike in the Olympic Mountains of Washington State. The night before, I laid out what I would need in my pack for the trip and even planned beyond what I ended up needing. I wanted to be prepared for any weather changes or even a delay that could take place during the hike.

I love the poster that reads "PLAN AHEA-D" with the "-D" placed by itself below the rest of the wording. It is indicative of having not planned well enough for the "D" to fit. Have we experienced the results of a failure to properly plan in life or been impacted by the lack of planning by others? That is not the case with GOD'S PLANNING!

In a psalm that presents sort of a history lesson on God's working in preparation for things to come we read. . .

"(16) When he summoned a famine on the land and broke all supply of bread, (17) HE HAD SENT A MAN AHEAD OF THEM, Joseph, who was sold as a slave." (Psalm 105:16-17 ESV)

In spite of a chain of events that seemed to work unfairly against Joseph, his ending up in Egypt was God's plan for good; something Joseph himself later acknowledged. (Genesis 50:20) Though Joseph was sold by his brothers, he was in reality SENT AHEAD of his brothers and the rest of the family as the means by which they were saved through a time of great famine. Even in ways that were not understood at the time, GOD WAS PLANNING AHEAD on behalf of His people.

God does not work in haphazard ways. Though we do not always see what He has in mind as we go through various scenes of life, He does have a plan with our greatest good in mind! GOD'S PLANNING for us goes back "before the foundation of the world" (Ephesians 1:4) for the blessing that is ours in Christ.

Speaking of God in Paul's second letter to Timothy we read. . .

"(9) who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of HIS OWN PURPOSE AND GRACE, WHICH HE GAVE US IN CHRIST JESUS BEFORE THE AGES BEGAN," (2 Timothy 1:9 ESV)

The Greek for the phrase "before the ages began" could be literally translated, "BEFORE TIMES ETERNAL." In view of GOD'S PLANNING that began before time, Paul could look to the future in great confidence (2 Timothy 1:12) and so can we as we recognize the manner in which God wisely and graciously sets HIS PLANS in place and brings them to fulfillment.

Even prior to His death on the cross, Jesus encouraged the disciples regarding the plan for them as He stated. . .

"(1) Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. (2) In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I GO TO PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU? (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I WILL COME AGAIN AND WILL TAKE YOU TO MYSELF, that where I am you may be also." (John 14:1-3 ESV)

A PLAN! A PLACE PREPARED! That is our God! May we surrender our lives to HIS PLAN so that we may ultimately receive the good He has in mind for us. HIS PLANS will come to fulfillment. (Proverbs 19:21) We can count on it!

Have a great day TRUSTING OUR FUTURE TO THE ONE WHO HAS IT PLANNED!

Profitable Training! (part 14 of 14)

Physical training helps contribute to a HEALTHY APPETITE. When we go camping and hiking -- exercising in the great outdoors -- I tend to work up a good appetite. However, exercise also helps with properly digesting and processing the food we eat.

Training in godliness works wonders to bring changes to our CRAVINGS and DAILY DIET. It helps us develop an APPETITE for that which brings true nourishment to our soul.

In the Psalms we read. . .
"(11) the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. (10) More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; SWEETER ALSO THAN HONEY and drippings of the honeycomb. (11) Moreover, BY THEM IS YOUR SERVANT WARNED; IN KEEPING THEM THERE IS GREAT REWARD." (Psalm 19:9-11 ESV)

And. . .
"(103) HOW SWEET ARE YOUR WORDS to my taste, SWEETER THAN HONEY to my mouth! (104) Through your precepts I GET UNDERSTANDING; therefore I hate every false way." (Psalm 119:103-104 ESV)

Have you found His word to be sweet? The benefit is needed warning, great reward, and much needed understanding.

Peter also urged. . .
"(2) Like newborn infants, LONG FOR THE PURE SPIRITUAL MILK, that by it you may GROW UP into salvation -- (3) IF INDEED YOU HAVE TASTED THAT THE LORD IS GOOD." (1 Peter 2:2-3 ESV)

Yes, He is very good! May we continue to CRAVE and LONG FOR what the Lord has offered us to feast upon. At His table we will find nourishment for our whole being?

Have a great day CONSUMING GOD'S WORDS OF LIFE!

Profitable Training! (part 13 of 14)

By now it should be clear that physical training is a GOOD INVESTMENT. It impacts our body inside and out. Bodily exercise contributes immensely to the quality of life.

The training in godliness is the GREATEST INVESTMENT we can possibly make. This INVESTMENT pays dividends beyond this life and even beyond our wildest expectations. God gives us good things in this life, but He has some of His greatest treasures in store for our eternity with Him. This is why a good heart condition is important to maintain.

Jesus urged. . .
"(20) but LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES IN HEAVEN, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO." (Matthew 6:20-21 ESV)

Benefits out of this world. Treasures in heaven. Is the INVESTMENT of our life right? Let us not make a half-hearted INVESTMENT. After all, what has God withheld in providing our redemption? (note Romans 8:32) Let us wholeheartedly INVEST our lives in seeking to do God's Will! Our quality of life now and the eternity to follow will surely be worth it all!

Have a great day KNOWING THE INHERITANCE WE WILL SHARE!

Profitable Training! (part 12 of 14)

Bodily exercise can IMPACT OUR SELF-ESTEEM. If we feel better and look better, we tend to think better about ourselves and what we can accomplish in life.

Training in godliness is the greatest way to IMPACT SELF-ESTEEM. Can there be any better feeling than to know we are right with God and have the assurance of all His blessed promises? To know how God views us ought to be a sure boost to our ESTEEM. It is the Lord Who makes us look good!

John encouraged. . .
"(1) See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called CHILDREN OF GOD; AND SO WE ARE. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. (2) Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is." (1 John 3:1-2 ESV)

What a marvelous provision. What a great thing to be known by God as His child. He values us enough to have made available all that is necessary to make that relationship possible. Praise God for such a position as He has placed us in.

Have a great day KNOWING GOD VALUES THE RELATIONSHIP!

Profitable Training! (part 11 of 14)

As I began to lay out a program to lose weight, though I quickly saw how I needed to cut down on the amount of food I was consuming, I realized that was not going to be enough. I also needed to get serious about more regular exercise. Calories needed to be burned. Exercise was necessary to WORK OFF FAT. Research has clearly shown that the best way to achieve long-term weight control is through regular exercise. Exercise improves some of the conditions that can otherwise lead to high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and also diabetes.

Godliness aids in trimming the FAT that should not be in our life. There are things we must realize need to be gotten rid of. To be weighed down by these things will inevitably slow or completely halt our quest for spiritual progress.

The Hebrew writer urged. . .
"(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, LET US also LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT, AND SIN WHICH CLINGS SO CLOSELY, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us," (Hebrews 12:1 ESV)

Let us throw off what hinders. The more we trim, the easier the race becomes.

Profitable Training! (part 10 of 14)

Physical exercise is good therapy. It is a great STRESS BUSTER. Sometimes we need to break away from things and just do something physical. Walk off the frustration. Work off some steam. A little exercise can help change our disposition and whole outlook.

Training in godliness also works as a STRESS BUSTER. Through a focus of faith we should dispel worry. When we get steamed we should remember what counts most. The reading of Scripture and refocusing can have a great calming affect.

Paul exhorted. . .
"(6) DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, but in everything BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION with thanksgiving let your requests be made known TO GOD. (7) And THE PEACE OF GOD, which surpasses all understanding, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS." (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV)

Yes, godliness is great therapy. Our God knows what He is doing!

Profitable Training! (part 9 of 14)

Getting regular exercise can helps us SLEEP BETTER at night. As we continue to be active our body seems more ready to RELAX and REST when we go to bed. The exercise can help ward off stress that would otherwise keep us keyed up and unable to rest.

The Psalmist stated. . .
"(6) There are many who say, 'Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!' (7) You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. (8) IN PEACE I WILL BOTH LIE DOWN AND SLEEP; FOR YOU ALONE, O LORD, MAKE ME DWELL IN SAFETY." (Psalm 4:6-8 ESV)

Through training in godliness we grow in our faith to trust God with the affairs of life. Since He remains awake (Psalm 121:4), why should we both lose sleep. If we are facing some specific challenges, let us lay them before God, trusting Him to help with the solution. Then we will be prepared to get the SLEEP the body needs.

Remember Jesus' great invitation to a wearied world.
"(28) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST. (29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS." (Matthew 11:28-29 ESV)

Sweet rest indeed!

Profitable Training! (part 8 of 14)

As I go for my daily walks I utilize the time to do a lot of thinking. Getting out in the fresh air seems to help bring a freshness and clarity to the mind, especially after spending time cooped up in the office. Recently on the news there was a segment on elderly people who exercised regularly and how it was helping keep their mind sharp. Exercise is good for the brain.

Training in godliness is also good for the MIND. It helps to establish a GOOD CONSCIENCE to guide our actions and decisions. Godliness also helps bring about a SENSE OF PEACE in knowing the relationship we have with the Lord.

Some people have lost their mind. In a sense maybe that is exactly what we need to do; lose our mind and, like Paul, seek to possess "the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:16)

Paul pointed to the right focus in his letter to the church at Philippi where we read. . .

"(8) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS." (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

As we exercise our brain, let us focus on the things which fall into the above categories.

Have a great day MINDING OUR MIND!

Profitable Training! (part 7 of 14)

Through a regular exercise routine we find benefit regarding easier MOBILITY. Our body is kept more limber so BENDING and REACHING are easier. Exercise helps us retain a sense of FLEXIBILITY.

Through Paul's godly focus, he learned to develop an ability to BEND and work through life's varied situations. Writing to the church at Philippi, he stated. . .

"(11) Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. (12) I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. IN ANY AND EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE, I HAVE LEARNED THE SECRET OF FACING PLENTY AND HUNGER, ABUNDANCE AND NEED." (Philippians 4:11-12 ESV)

Paul also developed a sense of FLEXIBILITY as he REACHED out to others. In his letter to the church at Corinth he acknowledged. . .

"(19) For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. (20) To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. (21) To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. (22) To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I HAVE BECOME ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE, THAT BY ALL MEANS I MIGHT SAVE SOME. (23) I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings." (1 Corinthians 9:19-23 ESV)

Paul stands out as a marvelous example of what training in godliness can do for a life. It suited him for God to work through him wherever he went and whatever the situation. He was enabled to go with the flow and yet stand firm with the truth of God. May we also develop the LIMBERNESS we need to be useful where God places us.

Profitable Training! (part 6 of 14)

Physical exercise helps to keep us HEALTHY. We gain the strength to fight off disease. We also keep the strength to be involved in life. With good health we are able to approach our daily activities with VIM and VIGOR.

Solomon stated the wisdom in these words:
"(7) Be not wise in your own eyes; FEAR THE LORD, and TURN AWAY FROM EVIL. (8) IT WILL BE HEALING TO YOUR FLESH AND REFRESHMENT TO YOUR BONES." (Proverbs 3:7-8 ESV)

Godliness affects the physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual aspects of our life. To sustain the soul we need to exercise godliness. To be spiritually HEALTHY we must retain a focus on spiritual matters and pursue the Will of God. May we allow God and His Word to retain their proper place in our life. In this way we will develop a ZEST for true life.

Profitable Training! (part 5 of 14)

Bodily exercise helps us to develop ENDURANCE and STAMINA. This aids us in work that needs to be accomplished and guards our body from fatigue when simply going through day-to-day activities.

Through the maintaining of godly focuses, Paul found the strength to press on.
"(13) I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME." (Philippians 4:13 ESV)

That can be our resolve as well. Training in godliness aids in developing the STAMINA to keep on keeping on because we know what matters most in life.

The Hebrew writer exhorted. . .
"(2) LOOKING TO JESUS, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who FOR THE JOY THAT WAS SET BEFORE HIM ENDURED THE CROSS, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (3) Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, SO THAT YOU MAY NOT GROW WEARY OR FAINTHEARTED." (Hebrews 12:2-3 ESV)

Let us follow our Lord's example. Let us look "for the joy"; the great purpose God has for our life. This will ward off the tendency toward weariness as we have developed the heart and willingness to PRESS ON.

Have a great day EMPOWERED TO STAND FIRM!

Profitable Training! (part 4 of 14)

Physical exercise is good for the HEART. It is good to get the heart rate up a little as calories and fat are burned and endurance is developed. I have found that my fast paced walking has greatly benefited the circulation in my feet. Through exercise we contribute toward better efficiency of the heart.

Training in godliness has great benefit for the heart, the soul, the spirit, etc.

In Psalms we read. . .
"(10) CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD, and RENEW A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN ME." (Psalm 51:10 ESV)

Through our relationship with God we come into contact with His power to purify and renew. Sometimes radical heart surgery is needed, but God can even do that wondrous work of transformation as the HEART is given over to Him.

Paul encouraged. . .
"(16) So WE DO NOT LOSE HEART. Though our outer self is wasting away, our INNER SELF IS BEING RENEWED DAY BY DAY." (2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV)

Remember the Pharisees Jesus referred to as whitewashed tombs, but full of dead people's bones. (Matthew 23:27) We ought to be most mindful of what is taking place on the inside. Our HEART must be properly focused and right with God. As we give it over more fully to Him, He will empower us with life that carries us on into eternity. Thus godliness contributes to the efficiency of the heart for the long run.

Profitable Training! (part 3 of 14)

Physical training helps us to build up our STRENGTH. As we exercise day-by-day, the STRENGTH continues to gradually build. Every little bit helps!

Through our continued training in godliness, we not only gain personal STRENGTH, but we also find great STRENGTH beyond ourselves.

Solomon stated. . .
"(10) THE NAME OF THE LORD IS A STRONG TOWER; THE RIGHTEOUS MAN RUNS INTO IT AND IS SAFE." (Proverbs 18:10 ESV)

To the church at Ephesus, Paul wrote. . .
"(18) having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, (19) and what is THE IMMEASURABLE GREATNESS OF HIS POWER TOWARD US WHO BELIEVE, according to the working of his great might (20) that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places," (Ephesians 1:18-20 ESV)

Better than being able to do lots of pull ups or push ups is the STRENGTH to keep our faith up through difficult times. As we continue to look to God we receive His sustaining POWER to uphold our life and keep us safe for the eternity He has in store.

Have a great day BEING STRONG IN THE LORD!

Profitable Training! (part 2 of 14)

Physical exercise can place us in the company of good COMPANIONS. Some exercise comes in the form of social activities with others (i.e. walking, biking, tennis, etc.). And there is great encouragement to press on and stick with a program when it is done with others.

There is also the opportunity to set an example. Our activities and success can be an inspiration to others.

Both of these are true in a spiritual sense. In our walk with Christ we have been brought into a very SWEET FELLOWSHIP. Our training in godliness comes through our private devotions and study, but also through small group studies, Bible classes with the church, and the listening to the preaching of the Word. In this FELLOWSHIP we have great opportunity to encourage and be encouraged. (note Hebrews 10:23-25)

John encouraged. . .
"(7) But if we WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, WE HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:7 ESV)

As we continue walking in Christ we continue in the sweet FELLOWSHIP of the church. In this we also continue receiving the purification the blood of Christ offers.

We also have the opportunity to set an example for both those within and without the church. Remember we are to live as salt and light in this world. (Matthew 5:13-16)

Our training in godliness brings benefit to ourselves and also to those who are encouraged and inspired by it. Let us continue to bear in mind the ways in which our life impacts others.

Profitable Training! (part 1 of 14)

Paul, encouraging the young evangelist, Timothy, exhorted. . .
"(7) Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; (8) for while BODILY TRAINING IS OF SOME VALUE, GODLINESS IS OF VALUE IN EVERY WAY, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." (1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)

Paul did not say there was no value in physical training. He acknowledged there is some. However, he pointed to the training in godliness as having value for not just the physical, but "in every way". Training in godliness holds promise not only for our present life, but also for the eternal life to come.

Over the past several months I have been receiving the benefits of physical exercise and a good diet. It has impacted me in a number of ways. In one of our recent Wednesday evening Bible studies, the congregation here helped me come up with a list of some of the benefits physical exercise provides. We then considered the spiritual parallels. The list of physical benefits included the following: good companions (social activity with others), strength is built, good for the heart, helps develop endurance, keeps one healthy, helps with mobility, is good for the mind (peace), helps one sleep better, is a good stress buster, works off fat, impacts self-esteem, is a good investment, and contributes toward a healthy appetite.

For the next thirteen days, I encourage you to meditate with me on the spiritual parallels to the things listed above. And if the focus brings to mind even other areas -- then all the better because the BENEFITS OF GODLINESS ARE GREAT!

Have a great day FOCUSING ON THE MOST BENEFICIAL TRAINING!

What We Believe!

Believing is a powerful thing. It can empower us to live even in the face of great challenges. However, seeing is not necessarily believing, but believing can be seeing. (note Hebrews 11:1) Some see and refuse to believe. There are also those who believe the wrong things. Therefore "What We Believe" is important to consider.

It has been noted that a problem with half-truths is the wrong half might be believed. That is why it is important to be truthful. That which is truthful is FULL of the TRUTH. Is that the picture of our life? Is that the character of our conversation? When it comes to "What We Believe", consider that right in the middle of that word is the word "lie". Look at it again: "beLIEve"! Unfortunately many people have believed a lie and in the process have rejected the truth.

As Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica, he wanted to ward off their being deceived. Some had apparently told them the day of the Lord had already come. (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3) This caused them to wonder about their hope in Christ. Paul also referred to those who "refused to LOVE THE TRUTH and so be saved." (2 Thessalonians 2:10) He then went on to state. . .

"(11) Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so THAT THEY MAY BELIEVE WHAT IS FALSE, (12) in order that all may be condemned WHO DID NOT BELIEVE THE TRUTH BUT HAD PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS." (2 Thessalonians 2:11-12 ESV)

The New King James Versions reads, "that they should believe the lie". BeLIEve the LIE! Notice that "I" is right in the middle there also. When the focus is more on what pleases self than on God, we are always in trouble.

When people are bent on rejecting God's Way, there comes a point when He just gives them over to it. (note Romans 1:24 , 26, & 28) What an awful place for a life to reach. It is therefore important for us to develop a LOVE FOR THE TRUTH so that we are not easily deceived and drawn away from it.

Let us continually seek and speak the truth. "What We Believe" is important, and as Christians it is important for what we say to be believable as well. In the midst of a world of half-truths and outright deception, may we draw attention to THE TRUTH to be loved that leads to salvation.

Have a great day SEEKING AND SPEAKING THE TRUTH!

"Important!"

"IMPORTANT! Read All Instructions Before Assembling!" "IMPORTANT! Read Manual Before Operating This Machinery!" "IMPORTANT! Alterations To This Product Will Void Warranty!"

Do we take such instructions seriously? Perhaps such warnings are merely to protect manufactures from being sued if instructions are not followed. This becomes clear when we read warnings that seem to be no-brainers. However, heeding the instruction to become properly familiar with the parts to be assembled or machinery to be operated can save one from a great deal of frustration and serious injury.

Yesterday I was struck by a closing statement in Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica that I'm not sure had caught my attention before. It is a statement drawing attention to the importance of what Paul had written.

We read. . .
"(27) I PUT YOU UNDER OATH before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers." (1 Thessalonians 5:27 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"(27) I COMMAND YOU in the name of the Lord to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters." [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton Ill.: Tyndale House]

The Greek word used here by Paul is "enorkizo", and according to Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words it means " to put under (or bind by) an oath" and can be translated "adjure". Strong's Lexicon defines the word as "(1) to force to take an oath, to administer an oath to. (2) to adjure (solemnly implore)."

That was pretty strong language for Paul to have used as encouragement to make sure everyone had the opportunity to hear what he had written. Also, though Paul used "we" (i.e. 4:13; 5:12) throughout this letter, he may have been exercising his Apostolic authority here in using "I". This solemn command was one Paul personally extended. What Paul wrote in this letter was "IMPORTANT" for everyone there at Thessalonica.

Perhaps, in general, we would do well to commit by SOLEMN OATH or PROMISE to read the Scriptures regularly. All of us are in continual need of the message contained therein. There is no more "IMPORTANT" reading we could do! The Scriptures relate to how our life is to be lived now and what relates to the ultimate destination of eternity with our Lord. Even when my wife and I go camping next week, I will continue doing my morning Bible reading. Daily examining and reading of the Scriptures is a "noble" (Acts 17:11) task that safeguards our daily walk. The SOLEMN AFFIRMATION is not something to do "on a stack of Bibles", but to be fulfilled by simply "opening one" with the sincere resolve to continue in reading it!

Have a great day COMMITTING BY WORD OF HONOR TO READ GOD'S WORD!

The Right Wing!

People talk about "right wing" and "left wing" ideologies and politics to designate where they and others may stand. Now, being under the "right wing" (i.e. correct wing) is important to consider. When it comes to living, some people seem to "wing it." That is, they really have no plan, they just deal with life's choices and situations as they come up. However, without a plan or seeking proper direction no assurance is provided with regard to ultimately arriving at the right destination. When it comes to our life, leaving the directing and nurturing -- especially that of a spiritual kind -- to chance is not wise.

Perhaps we have been blessed by having the right person come along in our life to take us UNDER THEIR WING. However, sitting back just hoping for someone to come along to do that can be a risky gamble. We need to take some responsibility in seeking out the right kind of guidance. Dave Thomas (the founder of Wendy's restaurants) made the statement, "Instead of waiting for someone to take you under his or her wing, go out and find a good wing to climb under."

A "good" wing. The "right" wing. This is what the psalmist David sought out. From one of his psalms we read. . .
"(8) Keep me as the apple of your eye; HIDE ME IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS, (9) from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me." (Psalm 17:8-9 ESV)

He also wrote. . .
"(7) How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take REFUGE IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS." (Psalm 36:7 ESV)

Other similar expressions are found in Psalm 61:4, 63:7, and 91:4. David recognized being UNDER THE WING OF GOD was where blessing and security were found.

Jesus expressed the desire for such gathering as He looked over Jerusalem and lamented. . .
"(37) O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! HOW OFTEN WOULD I HAVE GATHERED YOUR CHILDREN TOGETHER AS A HEN GATHERS HER BROOD UNDER HER WINGS, and you would not!" (Matthew 23:37 ESV)

What a tender desire contrasted with an awful refusal. The Divine desire was there, but it was met with a refusal to come UNDER THE WING that would have brought blessing and peace in the beloved relationship. Many who thought they were living UNDER THE WING OF GOD were actually living under their own misconceptions and a legalistic righteousness. True righteousness is found in Christ. (Romans 3:21-22; Philippians 3:9) May we seek to live life UNDER THE WING OF GOD now so that we can also be a part of the gathering into eternal glory.

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE GUIDANCE AND SHELTERING GOD PROVIDES!

Spending Speaks!

Someone has said that money speaks; it says, "Bye bye!" Perhaps we continue to experience our money disappearing fast. In Proverbs we even find wealth described as sprouting wings and flying away. (Proverbs 23:4-5) The same can be true with our time as well; it flies!

What does our "spending" say about us? When we look at that on which we spend our money and our time, what does it reveal? The statement has been made, "Show me your checkbook, and I'll show you your priorities." [Larry Burkett] Perhaps it would do us good to make a list for a week on that which we have spent our money and our time and see what our PRIORITIES really are? Is it all about us? How much of it is about others? And more importantly, how much does it say about our relationship with God and the carrying out of His Will?

Paul revealed what he valued most by the manner in which he spent his life. His focus was not on his own personal gain, but on the benefit others received in accepting the Gospel of Jesus. Paul clearly expressed this focus in his second letter to the church at Corinth where we read. . .

"(14) Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I SEEK NOT WHAT IS YOURS BUT YOU. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. (15) I WILL MOST GLADLY SPEND AND BE SPENT FOR YOUR SOULS. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?" (2 Corinthians 12:14-15 ESV)

What did that spending say about Paul's PRIORITIES? He gladly invested his life on behalf of others.

Earlier in this same letter -- while encouraging the Christians at Corinth to follow through on the commitment they had made to contribute their money toward the needs of saints in Judea -- Paul mentioned the focus that caused the Christians of Macedonia to desire to give of their money.

We read. . .
"(1) We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, (2) for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their EXTREME POVERTY have OVERFLOWED IN A WEALTH OF GENEROSITY on their part. (3) For THEY GAVE according to their means, as I can testify, and BEYOND THEIR MEANS, of their own accord, (4) begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints -- (5) and this, not as we expected, but THEY GAVE THEMSELVES FIRST TO THE LORD AND THEN BY THE WILL OF GOD TO US." (2 Corinthians 8:1-5 ESV)

The Macedonian Christians lived in an impoverished area. Still, they did not want to be left out of the opportunity to share with others. Their generosity, however, began with them first giving themselves to the Lord. That meant they were then merely stewards of whatever was in their hands. Remember Jesus exhorted us to "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness" (Matthew 6:33 ESV), knowing God is fully aware of our life needs. When our spending speaks for itself, may it reveal PRIORITIES that reflect our life belongs to God.

Have a great day SPENDING SELF TO GOD'S GLORY!

Pleasing Speech!

It is wise to choose our words well. The manner in which they impact others is important to consider. That is why the Scriptures encourage us toward our speech being gracious and seasoned with salt (Colossians 4:6), as well as the truth being spoken in love. (Ephesians 4:15) Also, gracious words can be sweet as honeycomb. (Proverbs 16:24) However, this is not suggesting we "sugar coat" our speech simply to please others or to flatter them with what they merely desire to hear. Paul warned Timothy of the time that was coming when people would surround themselves with those who would teach what they wanted to hear. (see 2 Timothy 4:3-4) If we merely speak to please others -- though that may keep them from getting mad at us -- it will never bring them the opportunity to hear what they might most need.

The world is filled with "people pleasers" and one can go crazy trying to please everyone around them. Because of that some suggest the best thing to be true to is yourself. Such may be fine if that is directly linked to being true to what God has declared. In all situations and conversations we ought to be true to who we are as believers in God, but with the ultimate goal being that of PLEASING GOD! That is the higher focus that serves to bring the greatest potential for benefit to others as well as ourselves.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica, he reminded them of how he had been when in their presence. They had developed a wonderful relationship and the work of the Christians there continued well. Desiring the best for them, Paul's focus remained on God's view.

Paul stated. . .
"(4) but just as we have been approved by God to be ENTRUSTED WITH THE GOSPEL, so WE SPEAK, NOT TO PLEASE MAN, BUT TO PLEASE GOD who tests our hearts." (1 Thessalonians 2:4 ESV)

Paul held true to the message he had received because in all things he aimed to PLEASE GOD! In his letter to the churches of Galatia he noted that if he had still been trying to please man he would not have been a servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10) When Paul had lived for the praise of men he had been a persecutor of the church. Having surrendered his life to Christ it had become the Lord's approval that meant the most to him.

What about us? Who most are we seeking to please? How is that being revealed in our life action and our conversation with others? Though our speech may sound pleasing is it remaining PLEASING TO GOD? As He tests our heart may it be found true to His Will.

Have a great day FAITHFUL TO THE TRUTH ENTRUSTED TO US!

My Advice Is . . . !

Sometimes advice or instruction comes in the form of criticism. When this occurs the hope would be that it is extended in love, but even then it may not always be easy to accept. We may need to swallow our pride. The message might be a "bitter pill" to swallow, but will it MAKE US BETTER? Can it help us to do a better job? Even if we feel the view might be somewhat exaggerated, can we find the point that needs to be grasped? If we focus on opportunities to grow, our acceptance of such information will be made easier.

Solomon urged. . .
"(20) Listen to advice and accept instruction, THAT YOU MAY GAIN WISDOM in the future." (Proverbs 19:20 ESV)

We can always be BETTER INDIVIDUALS. We can always do a better job at that in which we are involved. Rather than being defensive -- which is often the first tendency -- let me offer this advice. (1) Give the information some consideration. This may even require a day or two or possibly even longer. But do consider it. (2) Pray about it. Looking to God can provide assistance to properly process the information. (3) Try to be rational rather than emotional as you consider the ideas.

We are wise to give consideration to those ideas that will HELP US move in the direction of further growth regardless of who might be offering them. If the proverbial "shoe" doesn't fit, it is not ours to wear. However, if it does, we will be made better for continuing our walk in life to the glory of God.

Have a great day OPEN TO GROWTH!

Following The Pattern!

Not long ago my wife finished crocheting a baby blanket made of several rows of large teddy bears in the design. Her work amazes me because crocheting appears to me to be a fancy way of tying knots. However, though the knots I tie keep things secure, they never look as good as what my wife makes. Each of the teddy bears and the lines on the blanket between them ALL LOOK IDENTICAL. She has now started another blanket, and though she is not too far along, it is beginning to look just like the other one. How does she do it? She follows the same pattern. To depart from the pattern -- though a lot of time and energy might go into the project -- it will not look like it is supposed to.

The same is true regarding our life. If we do not keep our eyes on the RIGHT EXAMPLE of what our life is to be like, we will not be the kind of EXAMPLE others need as well.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica, he stated. . .
"(6) And YOU BECAME IMITATORS OF US AND OF THE LORD, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, (7) so that YOU BECAME AN EXAMPLE to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia." (1 Thessalonians 1:6-7 ESV)

It was with great painstaking seriousness that Paul worked to see CHRIST FORMED in those whom he taught; even relating it to the pains of childbirth. (Galatians 4:19) Keeping his own FOCUS ON CHRIST, he knew he could become a good example for others. It was the same for those whom he taught. With their eyes on the RIGHT EXAMPLE, the Christians at Thessalonica were able to become a suitable EXAMPLE for others; an EXAMPLE that was far reaching to the regions around them. Though that pattern was established about 2000 years ago, by keeping our FOCUS ON JESUS and modeling our life after Him, we too can become a good EXAMPLE for those around us. May we seek to live in a manner that the essence of Jesus is being seen.

Have a great day KEEPING THE PATTERN IN VIEW!

Sold And Redeemed!

Put on the auction block. Sold to others. People enslaved. It was unfortunately a part of American history. Sadly, human trafficking is repeated in parts of the world even today. Nevertheless, there are also those who think they are free who have actually been sold into slavery; slavery to sin. (note Romans 7:14)

During the time of the Judges we read of a cyclical history of apostasy, oppression, crying out to God, and deliverance. However, each time God raised up a judge to deliver His people, as soon as that judge died, the people again forgot God. (Judges 2:18-19)

Earlier in this second chapter of Judges we read. . .
"(13) They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. (14) So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them. AND HE SOLD THEM INTO THE HAND OF THEIR SURROUNDING ENEMIES, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies." (Judges 2:13-14 ESV)

This idea of God selling his people into the hands of their enemies is repeated again in Judges 3:8 and 4:2. Not only did God give His people up freely into the hands of their surrounding enemies, but He sold them. He handed them over to others as if they no longer BELONGED TO HIM. It was the very thing of which God had warned. (Judges 2:15) God does not make idle threats. Just as His promises can be counted on, His warnings are to be taken seriously as well.

Like the debtor in Jesus' parable (Matthew 18:25) God's people were sold because of their great debt of sin. Being oppressed by their enemies they would in a sense pay for their sin of forgetting God and disobeying His Will. God was to be honored. However, they were not honoring Him as they turned to serve other gods. Therefore God used the surrounding nations to chastise and punish Israel to get them to turn their focus back toward Him. Then, when they cried out again to the LORD, ready to acknowledge His Sovereignty, He redeemed them and once again MADE THEM HIS OWN.

The psalmist Asaph said of God. . .
"(38) Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; HE RESTRAINED HIS ANGER OFTEN and DID NOT STIR UP ALL HIS WRATH." (Psalm 78:38 ESV)

Is that not what God is still doing today? Though the Scriptures refer to God's unending love, we do not read of His unending patience. His patience is not to be taken for granted. Therefore, let us remember God created us. WE BELONG TO HIM. Yet how many times do we live as if we owned ourselves? Have we not suffered consequences for some of our life choices? Because of sin we have a debt we can never pay back ourselves. Sold under sin (Romans 7:14) we are in need of being redeemed; bought back to God. Praise God, in Christ, that blessing is ours! May we live our life as GOD'S POSSESSION!

Have a great day LIVING TO REVEAL WE TRULY BELONG TO GOD!

Well Fed!

As I was walking several days ago, my attention was drawn toward a commotion taking place on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. The sound that continued was almost pathetic. Two baby crows were facing their mother who was picking at some found food and I just had to stand and watch for a while. These baby crows kept crying out in a tone that made me think of children whining. One after the other they opened their mouths and squawked to be fed. Neither stepped forward to help themselves to what lay on the sidewalk. They just kept up their loud cry to gain the attention of their mother.

Perhaps we have enjoyed seeing pictures or have even had the privilege of viewing the live action of baby birds sitting in a nest with their MOUTHS WIDE OPEN to receive food being brought to them. Too young to hunt for the food themselves, they depend on their parents to keep bringing it in. This was God's design for nature. Do the baby birds have a sense of appreciation for what they receive? Do we?

I'm reminded of the psalmist Asaph's urging toward the thankfulness that Israel should have had toward God. We read. . .

"(8) Hear, O my people, while I admonish you! O Israel, if you would but listen to me! (9) There shall be no strange god among you; you shall not bow down to a foreign god. (10) I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. OPEN YOUR MOUTH WIDE, AND I WILL FILL IT." (Psalm 81:8-10 ESV)

God's desire has always been to provide. That provision began with Creation in preparing a suitable environment in which mankind could live. He provided what Israel needed as they journeyed through the wilderness, though the nation still complained and often was not very grateful to God.

Do we truly appreciate the manner in which GOD FILLS our life? Do we expect God to just keep "bringing it in" while failing to appreciate the blessings and the obedience that ought to accompany the receiving of such gifts? God provides us with both physical and spiritual blessings. He provides that which nourishes body as well as our spirit.

Jesus said. . .
"(6) Blessed are those who HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, for THEY SHALL BE SATISFIED." (Matthew 5:6 ESV)

Is that what we are continuing to seek; the righteousness of God? Are we finding true satisfaction there? Are we acknowledging how much He has filled our life? As we OPEN WIDE our life to receive His gifts, let us also OPEN WIDE OUR MOUTH to sincerely thank Him! May we remember that the One Who is mindful of every sparrow (Luke 12:6) is even more mindful of us! (Luke 12:7)

Have a great day WITH GOD RECEIVING THE THANKS FOR WHAT WE'VE RECEIVED!

Talk's Value!

Talk is cheap! Perhaps that is why everyone can afford to do so much talking regardless of social or economic status. It seems that most everyone has plenty to say. In fact some, even when they have "nothing" to say insist on saying it anyway! Even with the monthly cost of cell phone service, that is relatively cheap for all the talking that goes on all day long. Teens are constantly texting. Friends are constantly phoning. There is Instant Messaging, tweeting on Twitter, Facebooking with hundreds of friends at a time, etc. However, though it is great to be so connected with others, how much value is there in most of that communication? Where is the real value found in what is being said? Is it not in that which FOLLOWS?

Consider one of the parable's of Jesus.
"(28) "What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.' (29) And he answered, 'I will not,' but afterward he changed his mind and went. (30) And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, 'I GO, SIR,' BUT DID NOT GO. (31) Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. (32) For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him." (Matthew 21:28-32 ESV)

Now, Jesus' point of this parable related to those of His listeners who were awaiting the Messiah, but were not willing to accept Him now that He had come. Though they claimed to be living obedient to God, they were in fact rejecting God's Will while others were accepting it. However, as we consider the parable of the two sons in its simplicity, how much did the words of the second son cost him? Nothing of his time! Neither anything relative to expending his energy! Therefore, what was the real value of his words? Perhaps we would admit his lack of FOLLOW THROUGH had a cost with regard to the view his father would have had of him. The first son, on the other hand -- though he refused at first, his conscience seemed to persuade him to go and work.

Talk is cheap! Words can come easy. Statements flow freely, but with little if any cost when there is no FOLLOW THROUGH. It appears far too easy today for people to say they will do something and then not do so. That means either someone else ends up adding something else to their full list of things to do or it just doesn't get done. Though this may be distressing relative to life in this world, how much more so when it relates to spiritual things. Let us acknowledge by our life action that what gives talk its value is when it is FOLLOWED BY the expenditure of time and energy. There may be times when the FOLLOW THROUGH will come at a higher cost than first anticipated, but if we have said it, the clear expectation ought to be that we will do it! May those around us come to understand us to be of those who can be taken at their word.

Have a great day OFFERING SPEECH ASSESSED AS OF GODLY WORTH!

Grace And Truth!

Jesus came into this world as the embodiment of "grace and truth". (John 1:14) The grace God has provided through Christ is truly amazing grace. It is amazing because we are far from deserving it and God offers it anyway! That is why it is grace. If we could earn it, it would not be grace. (Romans 11:6) However, how much do we APPRECIATE IT?

Grace is not as accommodating as some seem to think. Even during the first century of the church there were some who rejoiced at the thought of grace, but did not UNDERSTAND GRACE in its truth. Again, Jesus came "full of grace and truth." (John 1:14) It is not one without the other. Grace does not do away with truth and the truth we have sin to be dealt with does not remove the blessing of grace. We need to accept God's grace in the truth of the relationship He desires for there to be between us and the Son. This is what reveals our APPRECIATION and UNDERSTANDING of it!

In Paul's letter to the church at Colossae he noted what they had come to UNDERSTAND when he stated. . .
"(4) since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, (5) because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, (6) which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing -- as it also does among you, since the day you heard it AND UNDERSTOOD THE GRACE OF GOD IN TRUTH," (Colossians 1:4-6 ESV)

Even here Paul associated the grace of God with truth. This implies the possibility of grace being viewed apart from the truth. Some thought (and perhaps many still do) that to go on sinning simply gives God the privilege of granting more grace. (Romans 6:1-2 & 15) There are those who "pervert the grace of God" in thinking it allows us to live immoral lives and grace will just take care of it. (Jude 4) The truth is that grace can be received in vain? (2 Corinthians 6:1)

In writing to Titus, Paul made it clear that to UNDERSTAND GRACE is to be trained or taught to renounce (say no to) ungodliness and worldly passions. (Titus 2:11-12) Is God's grace impacting us in such a manner? If so, then our life is demonstrating we do APPRECIATE God's grace and UNDERSTAND the blessing and guide it is to be to our daily life. May we praise God that Jesus did come "full of grace and truth" (John1 :14) as we accept the gift of "the grace of God in truth."

Have a great day COMPELLED TO LIVE BY THE TRUTH OF GRACE!

Family!

Unfortunately, not everyone in this world has a good sense of family. However, when family is as God would have it there is experienced a blessed sense of acceptance, caring, nurturing, security, strength, support, unconditional love, unity, etc. Someone has described home as being "where the stomach gets three meals a day and the heart gets a thousand." What a wonderful picture of sustaining nourishment. God intended for family to be A PLACE TO BELONG. That is also true in the spiritual family; the church, the household of God.

Today and this month mark two anniversaries in the life of my wife and I. Today marks our having been married for 36 years. The beginning of this month also marks having labored among and with the church here in Port Townsend, Washington for 26 years. Though I did preach all five Sundays in July of 1984, our official fulltime status began in August of that year. As my wife and I were talking with some of our brethren this past Sunday she noted that we have been here for all but ten years of our married life together. Though as in all relationships (both within the physical family and spiritual family) there are ups and downs experienced, the blessings of my marriage to my wife and participation in the FAMILY OF GOD far exceed the challenges faced. God and our brethren have been very good to us. Because my wife and I love each other so much and are committed to the relationship, we have worked through whatever conflicts we encountered. "Out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5:21) we need to be that way with each other within the church as well.

Though it sadly seems that some congregations treat their preachers as an "employee", I have been blessed to be made to feel a definite PART OF THE FAMILY. And that is how we ought to be toward one another as we recognize we are "MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD." (Ephesians 2:19) Though we may have different functions, EACH FAMILY MEMBER IS SIGNIFICANT. That happens when we genuine love is nurtured that causes us to "outdo one another in showing honor." (Romans 12:10) If there is to be a competitive spirit among us, let it be to that end.

As Paul wrote to the church at Galatia, he exhorted them. . .
"(9) And let us NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for in due season we will reap, if we DO NOT GIVE UP. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO ARE OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH." (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

As we enjoy the blessings of God being a part of HIS FAMILY, let us do our part to be a blessing to the rest of the family. We need each other and ought to cherish the relationships we share in Christ. May those around us witness the blessing God intended family to truly be in our homes and in the church. As we praise God for having not given up on us, let us not give up on each other.

Have a great day WILLING TO WORK WITH AND FOR ONE ANOTHER!

Impact Of Conduct!

David was a leader. He was king over a great nation. He was ruler of God's people. He was a national leader in the eyes of surrounding nations. His conduct was something of which he needed to be mindful. What David did was a reflection on his own life. Would he continue to bring honor to the designation of being an Israelite associated with a family of the tribe of Judah? How he conducted himself was a reflection on the nation he governed. Would he remain worthy of the honor and respect as a king, setting the right example as a leader? How he behaved himself was also a reflection on the God he claimed to worship and serve. Would God continually be glorified and honored by his life?

David knew God's awareness of his short comings. Just like us, he was not a perfect individual. However, David had a strong desire to be RIGHT WITH GOD. And it was that very RELATIONSHIP which kept him from taking vengeance others might have if they had been in his shoes. Because of the importance of David's own RELATIONSHIP TO GOD he considered the impact of his life on others.

Note how David expressed this desire.
"(5) O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you. (6) LET NOT THOSE WHO HOPE IN YOU BE PUT TO SHAME THROUGH ME, O Lord GOD of hosts; LET NOT THOSE WHO SEEK YOU BE BROUGHT TO DISHONOR THROUGH ME, O God of Israel." (Psalm 69:5-6 ESV)

David's prayer was that he would do nothing in his own life that might bring "shame" or "dishonor" to another. Should our aim in life be any different? Though we may not be a national leader (or other very public individual) should we not still share this same desire? Whether negatively or positively, we need to bear in mind that our actions impact more than ourselves. Are we focusing on being RIGHT in our RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD to the point that it would spare us from bringing shame on our own family? Are we aiming to SEEK GOD'S WILL in all things so as to not bring dishonor on the Lord's church? Are we seeking to PLEASE GOD in such a way that our life is an encouraging example for those who are seeking to do the same?

Paul exhorted the young evangelist Timothy to set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity. (1 Timothy 4:12) With that aim we will guard against shame. May it be so in our life.

Have a great day POSITIVELY IMPACTING OTHERS TO GOD'S GLORY!

SNAFU!

Have you ever made a "snafu"? A "snafu" is defined as "a mishap or mistake generally caused by incompetence and resulting in delay or confusion. [source, Encarta ® World English Dictionary © &(P) 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation] It is also an acronym ("SNAFU") standing for "situation normal, all fouled up". Have we become accustomed to snafus being a "normal" part of life? Perhaps as long as there are people (since we are all imperfect) there will be mishaps and mistakes. Many times things in life do get all fouled up. I recently came across a clipping that reported the United States Pentagon at some point had dropped the favorite World War II acronym "SNAFU" for "FUBB" which meant "fouled up beyond belief"! Perhaps we would agree we have seen or experienced that in this world as well. It seems that if anything can be messed up, someone is bound to do it and do it well!

We may also recognize SNAFUs and FUBBs in a spiritual sense. Lives can get messed up and "fouled up beyond belief." However, when that life is turned over to God, He can still straighten it out. HE CAN FIX the mess. HE CAN MEND the heart. HE CAN RESTORE the spirit AND HEAL the soul.

Remember when David committed his sin with Bathsheba and set things up so that her husband Uriah was killed on the front lines during battle. (2 Samuel 11) Yes, he messed up big time! He had "fouled up beyond belief" and there were consequences suffered for his sin. Still, God was able to bring renewal to David's life. In Psalm 51 we find David's words of repentance and his longing for restoration.

In an earlier psalm David described the personal impact of sin and the blessing of forgiveness where we read. . .

"(1) Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. (2) Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. (3) For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. (4) For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. (5) I ACKNOWLEDGED my sin to you, and I DID NOT COVER my iniquity; I said, 'I WILL CONFESS my transgressions to the LORD,' AND YOU FORGAVE THE INIQUITY OF MY SIN." (Psalm 32:1-5 ESV)

God knows what is wrong in our life. He knows the range of our life mess ups, even when we have messed up unbelievably more than we ever thought we could or would. However, let us NOT LOSE HOPE. Let us, like David, turn back to God with a TRUE PENITENT HEART and allow Him to bring the healing and restoration we need. Remember the same power that can say "Take up your bed and walk" also declares, "Your sins are forgiven." (Mark 2:9-11) Though the world may say, "You made your bed, now lay in it", we do not have to be doomed to remain there. The One Who created us CAN RENEW us AND TRANSFORM us to become what He desires us to be. May we keep a SUBMISSIVE HEART turned toward Him.

Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR HIS POWER AND WILLINGNESS TO RESTORE!
