Take A Breath!

[07/31/2010 "teEn-MAIL"]

TAKE A BREATH!

Many years ago there was a new bride who moved into the small home on her husband's ranch. As she began to settle into her new home and new life she placed a shoe box on a shelf in her closet and asked her husband never to touch it. For the next fifty years he left that box alone; until she was old and dying. One day as he was putting their affairs in order, he found the box again and thought it might contain something important. Opening the box, he found two doilies and 82,500 dollars in cash. Taking the box to his wife the man asked about its contents. She responded, "My mother gave me that shoe box the day we married. She told me to make a doily to help ease my frustrations every time I got mad at you." Her husband was quite touched that in fifty years she'd only been mad at him twice. He then asked about the money in the box. "Oh, that's the money I made selling the rest of the doilies."

This woman was one who learned to do SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE rather than destructive with her anger. Some people don't DEAL WITH ANGER very well. Today there seems to be far too many who are quick to pull out a gun and even shoot randomly when they get mad over a situation. Lives have been lost over trivial matters which for some reason were allowed to escalate! There was a recent situation in a city a couple hours from us where an innocent neighbor was killed by a random shot fired from a car leaving the scene.

David wrote. . .
"(4) BE ANGRY, AND DO NOT SIN; PONDER in your own hearts on your beds, and BE SILENT." (Psalm 4:4 ESV)

Paul cited this psalm in his letter to the church at Ephesus. (Ephesians 4:26) Often times raging in anger just fuels more raging in anger rather than calming oneself in order to be clear minded in either thinking or working through the situation. That is why it is frequently recommended that one take a deep breath and count to ten before responding when angry. Even taking in the extra oxygen has a physiological effect on the body that lends toward a calmer response. When we TAKE A MOMENT to give the situation some thought rather than exploding into action, we don't have to later deal with the regret of having allowed unbridled speech and actions to erupt.

Like the woman in the story above, doing something else of a CONSTRUCTIVE nature can take the mind off of what made us angry. In the process it is even possible to either recognize our part in contributing to the situation or realize it wasn't really worth making an issue over anyway. We might not make 82,500 dollars from doilies, but we can save plenty of face and time that would otherwise be wasted fuming and fussing while solving nothing. When we are tempted to breathe out in anger, may we slow down (i.e. James 1:19) and take a deep breath, taking time to ponder so as to calmly and rationally respond when dealing with the varying issues of life.

Have a great day HOLDING THE REINS ON ANGER!

Helped Up!

We all have our challenges. I am vertically challenged. For those who may not be familiar with that expression, it means I am short (5 foot 4 inches tall). If I get in a crowd it is sometimes hard to see. When sitting in a theater I always hope no one tall sits in front of me. When going to a parade, we try to get there early to get a good spot where no one will be in front of us.

Perhaps my being short feeds my desire to be where I can gain a good view. As I walk around town I love to look toward the mountains. I frequently look up at a peak called Mt. Townsend and desire to be there. I have made the hike more than once and have enjoyed taking pictures of the view from there. It is a height from which a great perspective of our region can be gained. I only gain that view by being HIGHER THAN I.

Another reason to reach for the heights is when there is the need for safety. If I was in a flood region, I would also want to be someplace HIGHER THAN I. But sometimes gaining a height of safety is beyond our own reach and therefore we need help to be lifted up.

David wrote. . .
"(1) Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; (2) from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. LEAD ME TO THE ROCK THAT IS HIGHER THAN I, (3) for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy." (Psalm 61:1-3 ESV)

Though David was a mighty man and great military leader, he still continually LOOKED TO GOD FOR STRENGTH AND SECURITY. There were situations in his life that were overwhelming and he knew without God's help he was not safe. He needed a help HIGHER THAN HIS OWN ability could provide. Though rocks can be climbed, there are some rocks where help from above is needed. David knew God was the One Who could place him where he could truly be secure.

There are heights to which we cannot reach by ourselves. Are we looking to God for reaching our place of SAFETY AND SECURITY in life? Is His higher perspective of life what we daily seek? May we continually allow God to lift us to where we cannot get by ourselves. It is when our life is UPLIFTED BY HIM that we can rise above the challenges of this life as we look toward the secure eternal hope He provides.

Have a great day EXPERIENCING SECURITY WITH GOD!

God Can Straighten The Twisted!

Yesterday we considered how Jesus is able to take care of the wrinkles in our life so that we can be presentable before God. Some of that proverbial "ironing out" needs to take place within our minds so that proper living follows.

We live in a world of many twisted ideologies. There are many whose understanding is twisted and even the truth is twisted to support arguments that promote their point of view. There are even those who twist the Scriptures (2 Peter 3:16) to say what they want them to say. Paul warned the Ephesians elders that some would arise from their own midst, "men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them." (Acts 20:30 ESV) We live in a day and age when labels are being switched (note Isaiah 5:20) and people are urged to accept what God has declared is wrong. And this is in spite of how clear God's Word speaks to many subjects. Therefore we will always be safe remaining with what God's Word has declared regarding what is in harmony with His Will.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth we read. . .
"(9) Or do you not know that THE UNRIGHTEOUS WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD? DO NOT BE DECEIVED: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, (10) nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 5:9-10 ESV)

Note there is no grouping as to which of these is more serious than others. All of these are contrary to the Will of God and able to keep those who practice such from inheriting God's kingdom. However, hope for such is not lost. Even with regard to these, God has provided in Christ a means of eliminating such life wrinkles and straightening out the twisted thinking.

Paul went on to state. . .
"(11) And SUCH WERE SOME OF YOU. BUT YOU WERE WASHED, you were SANCTIFIED, you were JUSTIFIED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 5:11 ESV)

Some of those at Corinth had been guilty of living in such a manner. However, a life change had taken place. CLEANSING, SANCTIFICATION, and JUSFICATION had occurred. The blood of Jesus is the greatest stain remover to come into contact with our life.

Though we may be living "in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation" (Philippians 2:15 ESV), let us continue to shine as lights fueled by the "word of life" to which we firmly hold. (Philippians 2:16) May our lives lived according to God's standard help make His expectations and wisdom for life clear to those around us.

Have a great day REJOICING IN THE CLEANSING WE HAVE IN CHRIST!

Made Presentable!

"Wash-n-wear!" That's what I like marked on my shirts. My wife does also, because that means those shirts can be laundered and then hung up without having to IRON OUT THE WRINKLES. One who dresses in WRINKLY clothes does not look very presentable. The same is true with our life. A WRINKLY life is not as presentable as God desires. Praise God He has provided the means in Christ to take care of those WRINKLES.

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, we read. . .
"(25) Husbands, love your wives, as CHRIST LOVED THE CHURCH and GAVE HIMSELF UP FOR HER, (26) that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (27) so THAT HE MIGHT PRESENT THE CHURCH TO HIMSELF in splendor, WITHOUT SPOT OR WRINKLE OR ANY SUCH THING, that she might be holy and without blemish." (Ephesians 5:25-27 ESV)

As Paul was exhorting husbands with regard to how to love their wives, he presented Christ as a model for that kind of love. As a husband ought to be mindful of helping to create a good life for his wife, Jesus is noted for having given Himself to provide a good life for His church. Jesus' desire is for the church (of which we are a part) to be presented WITHOUT WRINKLE. In relationships there can be WRINKLES. In our own individual lives there can be WRINKLES. When we keep our focus on Jesus and strive to live as He would have us, those WRINKLES can get ironed out.

"Wash-n-wear!" Washed in Christ to wear the splendor of His likeness. May we submit to His taking care of the WRINKLES so that He can be seen in our daily life!

Have a great day BEING SEEN TO WEAR CHRIST!

Humble Honesty!

In Pau's letter to the church at Rome, he noted. . .
"(23) for ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD, (24) and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus," (Romans 3:23-24 ESV)

Paul here implied that all of us are in the same boat. All of us have the same need; help in dealing with sin in our life. Remember that John stated for us to say we have not sinned is to make God a liar. (1 John 1:10) Being honest we know we still need to continue confessing and repenting of sin. It is an act of "humble honesty" to admit we are imperfect individuals. Praise God that in Christ we can find justification by His grace.

This "humble honesty" should also keep us humble in how we approach others with regard to sin in their life. Rather than being harsh and judgmental, we ought to be motivated by genuine loving concern as we gently try to encourage their life back toward the path of righteousness. To not be condemning does not mean condoning. Remember the occasion when in an attempt to trap Jesus, a woman caught in the act of adultery was brought to Him. (John 8) Though Jesus -- the only one there who actually did have the right to cast the first stone -- did not condemn her, He did not condone her actions, for he exhorted her to ". . . go, and from now on sin no more." (John 8:11 ESV) She, like us, was urged to leave the life of sin behind. That is the act of repentance; turning away from sin and walking in the direction of God's Will.

Maintaining this sense of "humble honesty" with regard to sin will helps us continue appreciating God's grace as we graciously encourage others to walk in accordance with God's standard. May we seek to walk together in the path of righteousness God has laid out before us.

Have a great day KEEPING THE LIFE TURNED TOWARD GOD!

I. O. U. !

Debts! Some people handle them fairly well! Others get in over their heads! The thing about debts is -- they must be paid; at least by someone! Living debt free means a real burden has been lifted from the life.

Now, there is one debt we could never repay that was paid for us! That is the debt for our sins. Praise God Jesus went to the cross and paid the price for our sins, freeing us from that debt! However, there is another debt that REMAINS OUTSTANDING on which we are required to continue making payments. Paul mentioned it in his Roman letter where we read. . .

"(8) Owe no one anything, EXCEPT TO LOVE EACH OTHER, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law." (Romans 13:8 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"(8) Pay all your debts, except THE DEBT OF LOVE FOR OTHERS. YOU CAN NEVER FINISH PAYING THAT! If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill all the requirements of God's law." [© 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

That debt is not yet paid. As we continue to live in this life we must recognize the obligation to pay that debt still exists.

God loves me. I.O.U. love; I owe you love because I have been loved so greatly. And your debt is to pass it on. Let's keep it going!

Have a great day CONTINUING TO MAKE THOSE "LOVE PAYMENTS"!

So What?

James stated. . .
"YOU BELIEVE THAT GOD IS ONE; you do well. EVEN THE DEMONS BELIEVE -- and shudder!" (James 2:19 ESV)

Can you almost hear James exclaim, "So what!"? So we believe in God! So what about it? To believe in God is to "do well". However, if it is merely intellectual acknowledgment we must DO BETTER. If we believe, how is it IMPACTING OUR LIFE? How is that belief BEING DEMONSTRATED? What difference is that belief making in association with our life choices and reaction to life situations? The context surrounding this verse reveals James' assumption that if faith in God is real, it will be MADE EVIDENT BY WORKS in the life. Not works to be saved, but works because we are saved! Works that would be a natural outgrowth of faith. Otherwise, James declared, the faith is "useless" (vs.20) and "dead" (vs.26).

There are some who seem to think belief in God is not a good thing. They don't want us to talk about it. There are also those who think belief in God is irrelevant. What does OUR LIFE REVEAL? Does our belief in God REALLY MEAN SOMETHING to us? Is it really MAKING A DYNAMIC DIFFERENCE in the manner in which we live our lives? If what we believe is going to be taken seriously by those around us, it needs to be SERIOUSLY DEMONSTRATED in the everyday actions of life. Because we believe in God we are to live in a manner which demonstrates we know Him and understand that His Will is the most relevant standard for any and every circumstance and situation life presents. May the genuineness and eternal significance of our belief in God be clearly evident.

Have a great day LIVING OUT THE RELEVANCE OF BELIEVING IN GOD!

No Deal!

It has been told that there is a certain tribe in Africa that elects a new king every seven years, at which time the old king is killed. For seven years this new king is provided the enjoyment of every luxury known to savage life. During these years his authority is absolute, even to the power of life and death. For seven years he rules, is honored and overindulged with possessions, but at the end he dies. Even though every member of the tribe knows this to be the long standing custom, there still never lacks an applicant for the position. For seven years of luxury and power some are willing to sacrifice the remainder of life's expectation.

There is another sense in which this is played out in life over and over again. How many are laying up all their treasure here, with no thought for the eternity that is next? How many are seeking a pampering, but making no preparation for the life to come? Paul warned of the coming time when people would be "LOVERS OF PLEASURE RATHER THAN LOVERS OF GOD" (2 Timothy 3:4), but in their choice they fail to acknowledge the greater loss. Though it may be a deal the devil is enticing many to make, it is one to which we should declare, "No Deal!"

Jesus asked. . .
"(36) For WHAT DOES IT PROFIT A MAN TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD AND FORFEIT HIS SOUL? (37) For what can a man give in return for his soul?" (Mark 8:36-37 ESV)

Many are willing to be bankrupted through eternity for the chance to make their millions here. As you set your goals for life, be careful what you begin to think is the most significant. Making money is not wrong if it is gone about in an ethical manner, but we do need to guard against worldly wealth and pleasure capturing our attention. Life lived for that is only short lived compared to the eternity to come.

Paul urged. . .
"(17) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to SET THEIR HOPES on the uncertainty of riches, but ON GOD, WHO RICHLY PROVIDES US WITH EVERYTHING TO ENJOY. (18) They are to do good, to BE RICH IN GOOD WORKS, to be generous and ready to share, (19) thus STORING UP TREASURE FOR THEMSELVES AS A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR THE FUTURE, so that they may TAKE HOLD OF THAT WHICH IS TRULY LIFE." (1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV)

Though that exhortation was for the rich, whether we have much or just enough, we still need to keep it all in perspective in relation to the eternity to come. May we find the GREAT PLEASURE there is in LIVING FOR GOD and in SERVING OTHERS. This is the way of laying up great treasure for our eternal future.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE LIFE GOD HOLDS OUT TO US!

Water Of Life!

Have you ever seen someone with a glass of some unusual mixture that looked interesting, but you were not sure if it was actually palatable and asked, "Are you going to drink that?" Perhaps we are amazed and even appalled at what some might drink. Some are willing to do it as a dare. Others may do it to gross us out. However, there is a sense in life when some are led to drink that which they are told is good, but which really does not bring the benefit they were seeking.

There are people in this world who are thirsty and think they have found water, but their thirst is not quenched. They have found cisterns from which to drink, but what those cisterns contain is not satisfying.

Consider the words of God that came through His prophet Jeremiah.
"(12) BE APPALLED, O heavens, at this; BE SHOCKED, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, (13) for my people have committed two evils: THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME, THE FOUNTAIN OF LIVING WATERS, AND HEWED OUT CISTERNS FOR THEMSELVES, BROKEN CISTERNS THAT CAN HOLD NO WATER." (Jeremiah 2:12-13 ESV)

The story is told of a preacher who was speaking on the subject, "Jesus, The Water Of Life." As he was speaking, a Moslem interrupted him and said, "Your religion is like this little stream of water, but Islam is like a great ocean!" "Yes," replied the preacher, "but there is this difference: when men drink ocean water they die! But when they drink the water of life which Christ gives, they live forever!"

Remember Jesus' offer to the Samaritan woman He met at the well of Jacob.
"(13) Jesus said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, (14) but whoever drinks of the WATER THAT I WILL GIVE him will NEVER BE THIRSTY AGAIN. The WATER THAT I WILL GIVE him will become in him A SPRING OF WATER WELLING UP TO ETERNAL LIFE.'" (John 4:13-14 ESV)

That water she wanted. The other water was no longer important to her, which was made clear by her leaving her water jar behind. (John 4:28) She went back into the town of Sychar and brought the people out to meet Jesus.

Jesus Himself noted the sad reality the many will choose the way that leads to destruction, but only the few choose to enter the narrow way that leads to life. (Matthew 7:13-14) The masses may drink from the "wells" of the world and other religions, but it is those who come to JESUS who find TRUE REFRESHMENT from the spring that WELLS UP TO ETERNAL LIFE. May we continue to DRINK FROM HIS WELL as we also direct others to Him.

Have a great day LEAVING THE WORLD'S CONCOCTIONS BEHIND IN FAVOR OF THE LIVING WATER OF JESUS!

The Great Escape!

The desktop background on my laptop computer is presently a picture of my wife and I in our kayaking gear as we stand in front of our kayak. Looking at the picture my attention was drawn to the word "Escape" on our paddles. In a sense, kayaking is an escape for us. We enjoy escaping from the other tasks of busy life to enjoy some time together out on the water. It is an escape that offers some good exercise for the body, but also some therapy for the mind. Kayaking places us where we are out enjoying some of God's beautiful creation.

When it comes to escapes there are many things which may come to mind. For some it might be the exiting of a building that is on fire. One may even think of someone breaking out of prison. Perhaps some would think of a trick once pulled off by Houdini? Then there are those who plug their IPODS and MP3 players into their ears to escape the noise or other distractions around them. There are also those who turn to alcohol and drugs to escape life. However, not all that is used as an escape actually brings one into better life circumstances.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth we read. . .
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but WITH THE TEMPTATION HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE WAY OF ESCAPE, that you may be able to endure it." (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)

The Greek word translated "escape" is "ekbasin", which means "to go out." (It is a compound of "ek", out, and "baino", to go). It is a way out or an exit. Even in a burning building the right escape must be utilized to save the life. Some have run the wrong direction, only to find themselves trapped. The same can happen with temptation. It is God Who provides "The Great Escape" from temptation, but we must accept and use that escape. Some do not escape simply because they remain instead of fleeing to safety.

Loss of life can be the result when an escape from danger is not made. However, to fail to seek to escape temptation and sin is of eternal consequence. May we recognize and use the exits God provides for fleeing temptation and living in His Will. It is God's Way out that leads to abundant life now and eternal life to come.

Have a great day TAKING GOD'S WAY OUT!

Don't Fret And Regret!

Things in life are not always fair. That is because of the selfish and simply wrong choices many make. There are those who will do just about anything to get what they want and unfortunately it creates collateral damage to others around them. Have we not been so touched in life?

David wrote. . .
"(1) FRET NOT yourself BECAUSE OF EVILDOERS; be NOT ENVIOUS OF WRONGDOERS! (2) For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb." (Psalm 37:1-2 ESV)

Though it often seems the wicked are fairing well in this life, their judgment will come. Though life may seem unfair toward us now, we have greater blessings yet to come. We have a hope. And we ought to keep holding that hope out to others -- including the wicked -- as well. Therefore, let us not cave into the idea that we have to live like the world to make it in this world. If we fret losing out on what others seem to gain and give in to their methods, we will find ourselves regretting the practices we have adopted and the loss of integrity in the process. It is better to have less (note verse 16) and feel good knowing we are right before God than to have much and regret how we gained it.

David went on to urge. . .
"(3) TRUST IN THE LORD, AND DO GOOD; dwell in the land and BEFRIEND FAITHFULNESS. (4) DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (5) COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD; TRUST IN HIM, and he will act. (6) He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. (7) Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!" (Psalm 37:3-7 ESV)

That is where our focus needs to continue to rest. Living in this manner is what will ultimately bring the gain worth living (and dying) for. I suggest you read through the rest of this psalm as David continued to contrast the ultimate outcome of the wicked and the righteous. Continually living life as God would have it helps provide a future from which we can look back un-regretfully blessed.

Have a great day BEFRIENDING FAITHFULNESS TO GOD'S WAY!

Where It Starts!

I recently had the following forwarded to me by one of the members of our congregation:

"Build a better world", said God. I answered, "How?
The world is such a vast place and so complicated now.
I am so small and useless. There is nothing I can do."
God in all His wisdom said, "Just build a better YOU."

Let us never underestimate the impact righteous living in this dark world can have on those around us. As we have been called to be salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) our presence in this world has great power to influence. If we think this world is bad, consider how worse it would be without any influence for good within it!

In Paul's letter to the church at Philippi, he urged. . .
"(14) Do all things without grumbling or questioning, (15) that you may be blameless and innocent, CHILDREN OF GOD WITHOUT BLEMISH in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom YOU SHINE AS LIGHTS IN THE WORLD, (16) HOLDING FAST TO THE WORD OF LIFE, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain." (Philippians 2:14-16 ESV)

In view of the world's condition, Paul centered the focus here on how those at Philippi would THEMSELVES LIVE. The spirit in which they approached life -- HOLDING TIGHTLY TO GOD'S STANDARD FOR LIVING -- and the manner in which they lived would allow their lives to SHINE in the world. Good changes in this world begin with the change God brings about in OUR OWN LIFE and then the influence that changed life can have on others beginning in the corner where we live. It begins with the work of God that makes a better "ME" (and YOU)! May we simply be what we have been called to be, living as children of God.

Have a great day MAKING A DIFFERENCE WHERE WE STAND!

Pondering A Thought!

"But I thought . . . ." Have you ever said that to yourself when you found yourself in trouble after having done what "you thought" was the right thing to do, but realized later you were mistaken? You had a thought, but apparently it was not the right thought. Your way was not the correct way. And it was the dependence on your thinking that led you astray. We have all been there. There are many people in this world who have found themselves in trouble when they refused to listen, thinking they had a better idea of what to do. Some even approach God's teaching that way. They apparently think God has offered us a "Burger King Religion" -- you know -- "Have it your way!"

We must always keep in mind the contrast between GOD'S THOUGHTS and ours. Israel struggled with this and so God attempted to remind them through the prophet Isaiah . . .
"(8) For MY THOUGHTS are not your thoughts, neither are your ways MY WAYS, declares the LORD. (9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are MY WAYS HIGHER than your ways AND MY THOUGHTS than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV)

Oh how we need to listen and take GOD'S THOUGHTS to heart. It is dangerous for us to attempt to depend on our own wisdom to get us through life. GOD'S WAYS are right! HIS WAYS work! He has revealed HIS THOUGHTS to us so that we can be spared some costly and even deadly mistakes.

May we have the focus on GOD'S THOUGHTS that the Psalmist had where we read. . .
"(17) HOW PRECIOUS TO ME ARE YOUR THOUGHTS, O GOD! How vast is the sum of them! (18) If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you." (Psalm 139:17-18 ESV)

Who am I to think I could have a better idea? I think I will focus on GOD'S THOUGHTS. How about you?

Have a THOUGHTFUL DAY FOCUSED ON GOD'S WAY!

Three-Way Focus!

We have the sincere desire to do good and even envision carrying it out. However, how many times have we found ourselves struggling in succeeding to do so. Other things get in the way. Sometimes it is other people. There are also times it is self that gets in the way. Though we should always strive to fulfill the Will of God, there are times when we find we are not quite as strong as we thought we were. The sincere desire is there to be strong and ready to do what is right (i.e. Peter in Matthew 26:33-35), but it can be easier said than done.

When Jesus was praying in the garden while the trhee disciples (Peter, James, and John) whyo had gone with him slept (Matthew 26:40), before going back to pray for the second time Jesus said to Peter. . .

"(41) WATCH AND PRAY that you may not enter into temptation. THE SPIRIT INDEED IS WILLING, BUT THE FLESH IS WEAK." (Matthew 26:41 ESV)

The flesh gets tired. It becomes weary in some of the experiences of life. In fact, when we have the choice, some things are best not dealt with when we are either hungry or tired. It is always important to be mindful of where our focus is centered and on whose strength we are relying. With the focus left too much on the flesh we will continue to struggle greatly. That is why, like Peter, we must continue to WATCH AND PRAY. Being WATCHFUL reminds us of the possibility of falling short and that we may not always know exactly what kind of challenges we might face. PRAYING reminds us of the guidance and power beyond ourselves.

There is therefore the need for a three-way focus; inward, outward, and upward. First, let us humbly acknowledge we are not all wise and powerful in and of ourselves. Secondly, let us remain alert with regard to the challenges that can arise around us. And thirdly (but certainly not least in importance) may we continue looking up to God for the guidance and strength only He can provide. Yes, let us WATCH AND PRAY as we set our minds on pleasing the Lord in all things.

Have a great day AWARE OF OUR WEAKNESS, BUT ENCOURAGED BY HIS STRENGTH!

A Builder! Not Wrecking Crew!

When some are given authority they seem to hold it over the heads of others or brandish it as a sword of power in controlling other's lives. Paul had been given Apostolic authority and was bold in proclaiming the truth and pointing out error, but he still maintained a spirit of love and gentleness toward others. Though some at Corinth seemed to question Paul's boldness, he made it clear he would be as bold as he needed to be in dealing with whatever needed to be dealt with. However, it was not in that spirit he desired to come. Therefore he wrote boldly so that he could come to them in a different spirit than that.

Paul expressed his desire where we read. . .
"For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of THE AUTHORITY THAT THE LORD HAS GIVEN ME FOR BUILDING UP and NOT FOR TEARING DOWN." (2 Corinthians 13:10 ESV)

Though we should always uphold the authority of God's Word and urge others to recognize that authority as well, have we ever been guilty of using the "sword of the Spirit (God's Word, Ephesians 6:17) to stab or slice and dice rather than "speaking the truth in love"? (Ephesians 4:15) Have we become so intent on making a point that we have missed the mark in guiding others toward a better understanding of the truth? Like Paul, may we seek to be BUILDERS rather than part of a wrecking crew. Where the truth of God's Word is accepted, it will do its own demolishing of the arguments and opinions that stand against it. (note 2 Corinthians 10:5) Therefore, let us keep practicing the Word as we speak it in love to help others BUILD their lives on the foundation of Jesus.

Have a great day HELPING OTHERS BUILD ON THE BEST FOUNDATION!

Prompted From Within!

Someone calls out and it catches our attention. We turn our head toward them and see who is talking. Having OUR FACE turned toward them may tell them we heard. However, did we truly listen? Should we not consider this also in our relationship to God and His Will? We may look up to Him. We may turn OUR FACE toward the reading of His Word. But are we listening? Are we focused? Are we truly submissive and responsive to Him? Though the face is turned and the eyes see, is there not something more which must be turned toward Him?

I like what the psalmist David implied where we read. . .
"(7) Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! (8) You have said, 'Seek my face.' MY HEART SAYS TO YOU, 'YOUR FACE, LORD, DO I SEEK.'" (Psalm 27:7-8 ESV)

God wants us to seek His face. That implies a desire to live in His presence and continue moving the life toward Him. However, the turning of the face toward God needs to rightfully begin IN THE HEART. More than a glance, it is to be a steadfast focus bound up in love for Him and His Will. Is OUR HEART declaring, "YOUR FACE, LORD, DO I SEEK" or is it focused more elsewhere? Not just a verbal acknowledgement, but a HEART acknowledgement. Keeping OUR FACE turned toward God is greeted by HIS FACE turned toward us. May we appreciate the blessing of living life FACE-TOWARD-FACE with God as we look forward to the day we will enter into His eternal FACE-TO-FACE presence.

Have a great day KEEPING THE HEART FACED TOWARD GOD!

Answering The Question!

Life is pondered. Experiments and investigation are made as life and its origin is studied. In the process questions arise that are sometimes first considered relative to theory and then proved or disproved through the investigative process.

How many times have we heard the question: "WHAT CAME FIRST, the chicken or the egg?" Yesterday, at msnbc.com, I read an article reporting British scientists at Sheffield and Warwick universities have now claimed to have solved this scientific and philosophical mystery. What they found was that there is a protein -- found only in a chicken's ovaries -- that is necessary for the egg to form. It is this protein that speeds up the hard shell's development so the delicate yolk and fluids are protected once it is laid, giving time for the chick to grow inside the egg. Their conclusion, therefore, is that the egg could only exist if it was formed inside a chicken. In the record of the Creation we read. . .

"(20) And God said, 'Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.' (21) SO GOD CREATED THE great sea creatures and EVERY LIVING CREATURE THAT MOVES, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and EVERY WINGED BIRD ACCORDING TO ITS KIND. And God saw that it was good. (22) And GOD BLESSED THEM, SAYING, 'BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY and fill the waters in the seas, and LET BIRDS MULTIPLY ON THE EARTH.' (23) And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day." (Genesis 1:20-23 ESV)

I've always believed the chicken CAME FIRST. The egg did not precede the hen that laid it and then sat upon it to keep it warm. The hen was a part of God's creation along with the other winged birds. Just as God did not form a human embryo, but created a man, so the account of the rest of creation seems to reveal the same. God began by creating the creatures and living beings He wanted and from there each produced after its own kind. Therefore, science has not solved, but merely affirmed the stage at which God brought life into existence.

What a marvelous Creator we have! Let us remember that GOD HIMSELF PRECEDED ALL THINGS since He has always been. That is why He is the great "I AM"! (Exodus 3:14) He exists. Because of Him we exist. And because of Jesus we have an eternal existence of which to look forward.

Have a great day KNOWING THE AUTHOR OF ALL LIFE!

Valuing Others!

Some seem to put "stuff" before people. There are even those who spend much energy and time speaking out and demonstrating to save this planet (and we should be good caretakers of what God has entrusted to us) while at the same time seem to hold little value for the unborn or the elderly. Even in the name of Christianity there have been many who have appeared to be more interested in stuffing their pockets than in filling the lives of others with the truth that truly brings freedom from sin and the hope of everlasting life.

Paul is a marvelous example of what should be most valued by us. Even when he deserved monetary support from those among whom he worked (note 2 Corinthians 11:7-9), there was something more valuable than their money; his relationship with them. Therefore there were times he even set his own needs and rights aside in order that Jesus and the truth of the Gospel would be glorified.

In his second letter to the church at Corinth Paul stated. . .
"(14) Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I SEEK NOT WHAT IS YOURS BUT YOU. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. (15) I WILL MOST GLADLY SPEND AND BE SPENT FOR YOUR SOULS. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?" (2 Corinthians 12:14-15 ESV)

There is a picture of a life surrendered to the calling of God. There is a focus that centered on what is of greatest significance; the lives and SOULS OF OTHERS. Perhaps it became Paul's constant focus because he knew the investment Jesus made on his behalf and how undeserving he was of such a blessing. That is also true for us as well. Therefore, may we recognize how the greatest investments we can make in life are those on behalf of the salvation of others. Our energy, time, patience, and even money will be no better spent than in focusing on the great spiritual need of those around us. Physical needs can be important to meet along the way as well. However, let us always bear in mind what is of eternal significance and what is not.

Have a great day WILLING TO BE SPENT ON BEHALF OF OTHERS!

No Gamble!

There was a song recorded by a singer named Kenny Rogers quite a few years ago titled, "The Gambler". The chorus began. . .

"You gotta know when to HOLD 'EM,
Know when to FOLD 'EM,
Know when to WALK AWAY,
Know when to RUN..."

From playing poker "The Gambler" had learned this to be a wise philosophy for life. Is there some truth in those words? Consider what Paul wrote to the young evangelist, Timothy where we read. . .
"(11) But as for you, O man of God, FLEE these things. [the things mentioned in verses 3-10] PURSUE righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. (12) FIGHT the good fight of the faith. TAKE HOLD of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." (1 Timothy 6:11-12 ESV)

As Christians, maybe the song we ought to sing is. . .

"You gotta know what to FLEE FROM,
Know what to PURSUE,
Know what to STAND AND FIGHT FOR,
Know what to HOLD.
You never count your good deeds
While you live your life of service,
There'll be time enough for countin'
When your life here's done."

Well, it might not become one of the top ten recorded hits, but as far as a philosophy for Christian living it's tops! Put it into practice! It will be no gamble! You will be blessed!

HAVE A GREAT DAY LIVING IN TUNE WITH GOD'S WILL!

Compelled From Within!

When a tea kettle is placed on a burner or over a fire, it is because of what is going on inside that makes it sing. The water bubbling within creates the steam that causes the kettle to whistle, alerting those waiting to enjoy some tea that the water is ready.

Consider what greatly influences our life actions. People are compelled to act because of varying influences; those from without (public pressure, bribery, praise, etc.) and those from within (selfishness, genuinely caring, etc.). However, outward influences can vary from place to place and thus create great variation and inconsistency in responses, while inward influences are based on the character of the life. When that character is good, regardless of what is happening around us, we can still act in a proper manner because of what is going on within.

About three years ago I noted a specific Greek word in Romans 12:11. [05/31/2007 "teEn-MAIL focus] There Paul wrote. . .
"Do not be slothful in zeal, BE FERVENT IN SPIRIT, Serve the Lord." (Romans 12:11 ESV)

The Greek word translated "fervent" is "zeontes" which is from "zeo" and literally refers to the idea of "BOILING." Our English defines "FERVENT" as showing passionate enthusiasm or being glowing hot. Though FERVENCY can be seen in outward actions, it is the SPIRIT OF FERVENCY within that keeps the consistency in serving the Lord. Are we hot, cold, or guilty of being unpalatably lukewarm? (note Revelation 3:15-16) When we are truly BOILING HOT for the things of God we cannot help but sing His praises regardless of what is going on around us. Just like a tea kettle singing because of what is going on inside it, the same can be true of our life. Are those around us hearing us? May we remain open to God's stirring within our life so that we can remain on the "BOIL" for His Heavenly purposes.

Have a great day REMAINING HOT FOR THE THINGS OF GOD!

Approval Rating!

COMMENDABLE actions are those worthy of praise. When one is COMMENDED by others it means their actions meet their approval. The life is endorsed as being something worthy of taking note. People are even presented with COMMENDATIONS; awards of recognition for outstanding achievement in life. The eleventh chapter of Hebrews lists many named and unnamed men and women COMMENDED for their great faith. (i.e. Hebrews 11:1-2,4,5,39) Each one had a faith that focused on God regardless of what they experienced in life and are therefore worthy examples for us to consider.

People in this world may receive COMMENDATIONS for numerous achievements. They can be applauded for all kinds of accomplishments. They can gain notoriety for many things. Some may handle that attention well while others may allow it to go to their heads and become boastful. People may even become comfortable in COMMENDING themselves. However, on whose criteria are those COMMENDATIONS based? Are they all truly COMMENDABLE?

In Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth, he stated. . .
"(17) 'Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.' (18) For it is not the one who commends himself WHO IS APPROVED, but THE ONE WHOM THE LORD COMMENDS." (2 Corinthians 10:17-18 ESV)

We may be greatly encouraged by the COMMENDATIONS we receive from our peers. We may even feel pretty good about ourselves. However, though it is great to receive such encouragement for the manner in which we live our life, let us not get too comfortable there. The thing with which to be most concerned in what is our approval rating with the Lord?

Like Timothy, let us accept the urging of Paul where he wrote...
"(15) DO YOUR BEST TO PRESENT YOURSELF TO GOD AS ONE APPROVED, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, RIGHTLY HANDLING THE WORD OF TRUTH." (2 Timothy 2:15 ESV)

Rightly handling the word of truth not only includes sharing it and not distorting it, but also correctly applying it to our everyday living. May it be the Lord's approval above all else that we seek to receive. In this way we will reveal due appreciation for the righteous standing we have in Christ before God. Thus our only boast will be in Him and what He has graciously provided.

Have a great day BEING THOSE ON WHOM GOD'S FAVOR RESTS!

Yes, Be Thankful!

I AM NOT GOD! And for that we can thank God. However, does my life always acknowledge God's place? Are there times when I have lived based on my own wisdom and understanding? Have I chosen my own way without seeking His guidance? Have my choices at times seemed to indicate I must have thought my way was better than God's. Have I judged the heart of another or retaliated against them? Any of these would in a sense be putting myself in God's place. But I AM NOT GOD! Again, let us be thankful!

David wrote. . .
"(19) Arise, O LORD! Let not man prevail; let the nations be judged before you! (20) Put them in fear, O LORD! LET THE NATIONS KNOW THAT THEY ARE BUT MEN!" (Psalm 9:19-20 ESV)

How often does the world arrogantly exalt itself without acknowledging the need for God's direction? There is the need for life events to remind them they are mortal, not all wise, and are accountable not merely to themselves, but to God Whose purposes will ultimately prevail or stand. (Proverbs 19:21) To continually acknowledge God as God is to ward off conceit and rebellion. It is also a relief because we can leave judgment and retribution to God while we live to please Him and serve His purposes. It also means we don't have to have all of life figured out. We just keep trusting the One who has the answers and holds our eternal future safely in His hands. Yes, be thankful GOD IS GOD and I am not!

Have a great day REJOICING IN THE GUIDANCE AND WISDOM BEYOND OURSELVES!

Not Left Behind!

We have what we call "mountain top" experiences in life (i.e. teen Bible camps, youth rallies, workshops, other forms of fellowship, or even service projects, etc.) that UPLIFT and EXCITE us. They pump us up. They make us feel good. They empower us to press on. However, moving from the mountain top takes us to the valleys. Sometimes leaving the "mountain top" means leaving some of the sensation behind. Have we experienced it? Still, can we not find some way to carry that ENTHUSIASM and ZEAL on with us as we deal with daily life in the valleys?

Prior to the recent senior teen camp session of which I was involved, I took a prayer walk around the camp (as I have done for several years) and among the things for which I prayed was for both the teens and staff to leave at the end of camp different than we came. Each year we try to encourage the teens to not allow what happens at camp to stay at camp. The spiritual high they may experience during a week away from the real world, needs to remain with them to keep them (and all of us) strong as we continue to allow God to use us. How sad it is when teens return from some spiritual encounter and are either viewed or even told (as their EXCITEMENT and ZEAL are witnessed), "Oh, they'll get over it." Certainly ZEAL should be based on what is true (note Romans 10:2) and be properly directed, but shame on those who would put out rather than fan their flame of faith and desire to give themselves wholly to living for God. Shame also on us who have allowed that spirit to diminish in our own life. May the expectation and encouragement be toward continued GENUINE ZEAL FOR THE LORD. When the fire of faith is lit, may we not allow others or the cares of life to begin to squelch it.

When Moses came down from the mountain, it was evident to the nation of Israel he had been in the presence of God. His face shone and the people were afraid to approach him. (Exodus 34:30-35) As the Apostles stood firm in their faith, the Jewish leaders took note that they had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13) Is there evidence in our life revealing our continued connection to the Lord? Our connection with the Lord must be more than a "camp thing", but a daily thing. Through daily prayer, Bible reading, and personal and family daily devotions the fire of our faith can continue burning bright to maintain an EXCITEMENT and ZEAL for living for the Lord and His purposes.

Jesus pressed on with a ZEAL for the things of the Father. The Apostles pressed on with a ZEAL for the Gospel of Jesus. Are we developing the same focus? What is it that consumes us? When Jesus cleared the temple, His disciples remembered . . .

"(17) His disciples remembered that it was written, 'ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.'" (John 2:17 ESV) [quoting from Psalm 69:9)

It was more than what was going on within a structure, but what was out of place with a proper relationship to God and His Will. We too must be concerned with what is going on among and within ourselves (God's temple; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19-20) on a daily basis and seek to encourage others toward it as well. As we strive to be like Jesus, may we maintain a ZEAL for what God desires as we live to please Him and urge others to do the same. Let us remain EXCITED about what God has done and is doing on our behalf, and what He has assured us of for the future.

Have a great day DRIVEN BY GENUINE ENTHUSIASM FOR THE THINGS OF GOD!

We'll See!

"We'll see." How many times has that been the response when you have asked to do or get something? Though it is not a definite "yes", it indicates some thought will be given to it. Though it creates some un-surety, it does leave room for the possibility. Growing up, I experienced many times when the response "We'll see" actually materialized into the granting of the request. I have talked with others, however, who learned such a response really did mean "no".

"We'll see." That response leaves the door open for the possibility that should not be dismissed, even though it is not a sure thing. However, though this is the way among mankind, Jesus has provided assurances on which we can look to with confidence. Among some of the passages where our Lord declared "I WILL" we read. . .

"(28) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST." (Matthew 11:28 ESV)

And. . .

"(40) For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I WILL RAISE HIM UP ON THE LAST DAY." (John 6:40 ESV)

In contrast to "We'll see", the expression "I WILL" is indicative of the decision not needing to be thought over, but that it has actually already been made. Though some assurances will come in their time, WE WILL SEE them because Jesus has said HE WILL make it so. May we continue to find rest in our life wrapped up in His as we look forward to our ultimate rising into eternity with the Lord.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY WHAT JESUS HAS ALREADY DECIDED!

Looking In The Right Place!

There are many things that become the object of searching in this world. Many people spend their life searching for the wrongs things while others who may be looking for the right things are looking in the wrong places. There is much that can be unearthed while that which is of greatest significance remains buried and hidden from sight and therefore not grasped and possessed.

In Job we read. . .
"(9) Man puts his hand to the flinty rock and overturns mountains by the roots. (10) He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing. (11) He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light." (Job 28:9-11 ESV)

Think of all the diamonds, gold, silver, and other precious metals and stones that have been discovered and unearthed through the centuries. Such has even become the all-consuming interest of some until their death. So much time, energy, and sacrifice expended for that which relates only to this realm.

Then the questions were asked. . .
"(12) BUT WHERE SHALL WISDOM BE FOUND? And WHERE IS THE PLACE OF UNDERSTANDING? (13) Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living." (Job 28:12-13 ESV)

WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. How many have disregarded them, not recognizing their worth? They have accepted that which they have found among mankind, but looked no further. Job went on to acknowledge that such is not found in the deep and cannot be bought with gold or silver or other precious things because it is of greater value than any of that. (vss.14-19) He then stated it is God Who understands the way to it because it is He Who knows its place. (vs.23)

Ultimately Job declared regarding God's revealing . . .
"(28) And he said to man, 'Behold, THE FEAR OF THE LORD, that IS WISDOM, and TO TURN AWAY FROM EVIL IS UNDERSTANDING.' " (Job 28:28 ESV)

It is God to Whom we need to continually turn for the discovery of WISDOM and the development of UNDERSTANDING so as to discern evil from good. What we need to lead us through life now and on into an eternity with Him is uncovered and revealed by Him. May our daily life reveal our recognition of this searching to be of the greatest significance.

Have a great day ACCEPTING THE PRECIOUS THINGS GOD BRINGS OUT TO LIGHT!

Sign Of Life!

Breathe in. Breath out. Such is a sign the body is still alive. As long as we are "sucking air" (as some say, acknowledging they are still among the living), that is a good thing. When someone is seen unconscious, the first thing often checked is to see if they are breathing. Air taken into the lungs brings oxygen into the blood system which is carried through the body and then exhaled so another breath can be taken. However, what comes forth from the life of some is a lot of hot air. Others breathe out threats. Is there any kind of resolve associated with our breathing in and what comes forth from our life?

As Job was accused by his friends of great sinfulness being the reason for his circumstances, he hung onto his INTEGRITY in the midst of great loss and personal suffering stating. . .
"(3) AS LONG AS MY BREATH IS IN ME, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, (4) MY LIPS WILL NOT SPEAK FALSEHOOD, and my tongue WILL NOT UTTER DECEIT." (Job 27:3-4 ESV)

What a marvelous RESOLVE in approaching life! For us to have that same kind of RESOLVE OF INTEGRITY in life would be a sign of the life God desires us to live. Since in God there is nothing false (note Titus 1:2 and Hebrews 6:18), so it should also be with us as His children. As we breathe in God's good air and live sustained with the "spirit of God" in our nostrils, let us breathe out words and actions that glorify God and benefit those around us. May our daily RESOLVE be that of INTEGRITY in all we do and say.

Have a great day USING THE BREATH OF LIFE GOD HAS GIVEN TO HIS GLORY!

Prayer!

The Scriptures encourage and urge us to pray. Prayer is to be recognized as a blessed privilege in all circumstances and situations. (i.e. Ephesians 6:18) Prayer is multifaceted and to be an ongoing part of our Christian life. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) There is adoration, confession, petition, seeking, thanksgiving, etc. How wonderful it is that the Scriptures do not give us one posture or phrasing for prayer, but urge it to be personal and sincere. Though Jesus provided a model prayer (Matthew 6:9-13), His intent was not for that to become our prayer. However, we can learn from the elements He included and can so also from other prayers recorded in the Bible. Although we should approach our Heavenly Father with reverence, the length (long or short) or phrasing are relative to our personal focus of the moment.

One of the times when Jesus taught on the subject of prayer, He stated. . .
"(7) And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for THEY THINK THAT THEY WILL BE HEARD FOR THEIR MANY WORDS. (8) Do not be like them, for YOUR FATHER KNOWS what you need before you ask him." (Matthew 6:7-8 ESV)

Though prayer should not become something merely to quickly get over and be done with (as God deserves more of our attention than that), a prayer does not have to be long to be powerful in its focus. This past week there was a lot of praying that went on at the Senior Teen Session of Delano Bay Christian Camp at all hours of the day and night. And in the midst of all the week's spiritual focuses I was reminded on two occasions of the power of a short prayer.

The first was following one of our daily morning staff meetings where we discussed the activities and focuses for the day before the campers joined us for the morning focus. The prayer that was led at the end of our meeting -- and which powerfully brought all we had discussed into perspective for the day -- was simply, "GOD. USE US. AMEN." What powerful encounters that set the stage for. Praying such a prayer and genuinely surrendering the life for God to do that, opens the door to God bringing about things greater than we might imagine.

Later that same day, when I asked one of the teens to close our class in prayer, he simply prayed, "GOD. YOUR WILL BE DONE! AMEN!" For what we had discussed that day, this was a most appropriate prayer for our focus for the rest of the day. Again, what powerful things God can do when we have opened our life to the acceptance of HIS WILL and the allowing of it to be done in and through us.

In both cases, such being the genuine desire of the heart toward God, those prayers spoke more than what might have been said with many words. Though I would caution to not become lazy in prayer, we would all do well for both of these to be associated with the sincere prayer of our daily life.

Have a great day PREPARED IN HEART, MIND, AND BODY TO BE USED FOR GOD'S PURPOSES!

Free Indeed!

Following a week of working with the Senior Teen Session at Delano Bay Christian Camp, as I was driving home yesterday afternoon the stickers on a car caught my attention. Though there were several, I was only able to read two. The first read, "SUBHUMAN", and the second, "GOD FREE YOUTH". It is not always clear what is behind some bumper stickers, but when I saw these two together it got my mind going. Since I was traveling near a navy base, it is very possible the "subhuman" sticker was simply referring to a human who works on a sub (submarine). However, after reading the second sticker my mind began to link the two concepts together.

Often the excuse is given when a mistake is made, "I'm only human." It is true we are human beings. However, since we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) and God's desire is for that Divine essence to be renewed in us, could we not say that to live a life unlinked to God and devoid of GODLINESS would be "subhuman" (less than human)? It is less than that for which He created us!

Remember Peter's statement we noted recently where we read . .
"(3) HIS DIVINE POWER has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them YOU MAY BECOME PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire." (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)

Rather than "subhuman", God desires to elevate our lives to share His glorious essence. In Christ the means for such transformation (2 Corinthians 3:18) has been made possible if we will accept God's Word and allow Him to do His marvelous work in and through us. To live a "GOD FREE" life would therefore be "subhuman."

Like some who witnessed Jesus during His walk on earth, there are still many today who think they are free, not realizing how enslaved they actually are. (see John 8:33) They are enslaved by the world, the flesh, by sin, their jobs, their guilt, and a myriad of other things. We need to add a comma and make it our prayer, saying, "GOD, FREE YOUTH" (and men and women as well) around the world. May they all begin to see how enslaved they are and turn to the Lord so they may truly be free. (John 8:32) It is GODLINESS, NOT GODLESSNESS that brings true freedom; from fear of death, guilt from sin, the wrath of God, despair, etc.

Jesus said . . .
"(36) SO IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE, YOU WILL BE FREE INDEED." (John 8:36 ESV)

In Christ is found the greatest freedom we could ever experience. In Him we are enabled to escape and break free from the corruption of this world. Praise God for setting us free to share that for which He created us.

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE TRUE FREEDOM THAT IS OURS IN CHRIST!

The IN Crowd! (part 10 of 10)

If you are being looked for, where will you BE FOUND? Where were you last night? Where were you yesterday afternoon? Where were you this morning? Was it where you would want JESUS TO FIND YOU?

Where we are in life now relates to where we will be taken from to enter into eternity. Are we continuing to keep this in mind?

Note Paul's aim.
"(7) But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. (8) Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ (9) and be FOUND IN HIM, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith--" (Philippians 3:7-9 ESV)

Above all, Paul wanted to be FOUND IN CHRIST. All else counted for nothing. Being IN CHRIST was everything!

John exhorted. . .
"(28) And now, little children, ABIDE IN HIM, SO THAT WHEN HE APPEARS WE MAY HAVE CONFIDENCE AND NOT SHRINK FROM HIM IN SHAME AT HIS COMING." (1 John 2:28 ESV)

Our source of confidence is knowing we are IN HIM! May this continue to be the quest of our life!

Have a great day SET TO ULTIMATELY BE FOUND IN HIM!

The IN Crowd! (part 9 of 10)

What is the benefit we receive from the "in crowd" of which we have been seeking to be a part? Is it a place where we are truly NURTURED? Is it a group where we receive BLESSING? Are the benefits more than that which relates to the physical life?

There are so many other passages we could focus on regarding what it means to be IN CHRIST. Just reading through the Ephesian letter we find phrase after phrase regarding what is found and was accomplished IN HIM. [I once preached a series of 23 sermons on those phrases from Ephesians.]

In Paul's opening statements he wrote. . .
"(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has BLESSED US IN CHRIST WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING in the heavenly places," (Ephesians 1:3 ESV)

What can we lack IN CHRIST? There is no other source for such blessing. Why should we be tempted to even look anywhere else? Praise God for such a provision as is ours IN CHRIST!

Have a great day RECEIVING IT ALL IN CHRIST!

The IN Crowd! (part 8 of 10)

The CROWDS make promises. Nevertheless, how easily are they broken? It seems we live in a world of broken promises. The throngs of this world are like waves of the sea washing this way and that. Do we find ourselves struggling with finding something on which we can truly count?

Paul pointed to the great blessing we share with the RIGHT CROWD!
"(6) This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and PARTAKERS OF THE PROMISE IN CHRIST JESUS through the gospel." (Ephesians 3:6 ESV)

Oh, the PROMISES IN CHRIST! We can count on these. It doesn't matter how many God has made, these PROMISES will not be forgotten. They will not be broken. They will be found to be "Yes" IN CHRIST! (2 Corinthians 1:20)

May we be encouraged by the unending faithfulness of our Lord. If we like hearing the word "Yes", let us remain IN HIM!

Have a great day COUNTING ON THE PROMISES IN CHRIST!
