Avoiding Disqualification! (part 2 of 2)
What would we think if we had a personal trainer who was very over weight? Though they urged us on in weight training, cardio and endurance exercises, and proper nutrition, might we wonder if they were taking their own advice? Or could we look at them and draw the conclusion that the program they laid out for us does not work? If we accepted their program and became the picture of health, would be become concerned about their health condition that could ultimately cut short their life? Though a personal trainer might bring benefit to others, would they not be the loser for not exercising and eating healthy themselves?
In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth he stated. . .
"(24) Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. (25) Every athlete EXERCISES SELF-CONTROL in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. (26) So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. (27) But I DISCIPLINE MY BODY AND KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL, LEST AFTER PREACHING TO OTHERS I MYSELF SHOULD BE DISQUALIFIED." ( 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV)
Winning takes DETERMINATION! And just as good health takes DISCIPLINE, the same is true regarding spiritual health. Paul recognized how he could teach spiritual discipline and be disqualified himself if he failed to EXERCISE DISCIPLINE AND SELF-CONTROL in his own life. He could win many to Christ who would obtain the prize of an imperishable crown of life and be a loser himself if he did not practice what he preached. Therefore Paul was mindful of both teaching and setting a proper example in accordance with the Will of God. To hear him preach and to observe his life revealed the Way of God was the right path of life. His life revealed God's power and God's wisdom.
In Paul's first letter to Timothy he encouraged. . .
"(8) for while bodily training is of some value, GODLINESS IS OF VALUE IN EVERY WAY, as it holds promise FOR THE PRESENT LIFE AND ALSO FOR THE LIFE TO COME." ( 1 Timothy 4:8 ESV)
May our life clearly reflect how godliness really is the program that works and benefits for all things. Let us be mindful of developing a SPIRITUAL PHYSIQUE that others around us will desire to develop as well. God's spiritual regimen is the one for true champions. It is the one that fits us for a future eternity with Him.
Have a great day STICKING WITH GOD'S FITNESS PLAN!
