Following The Light!

There are "fair-weather" boaters who are only out on the water when the weather is calm. There are "fair-weather" golfers who only walk the links when the weather is nice. There are "fair-weather" runners or walkers who choose not to exercise when the weather is cold and damp. And the list goes on. However, such as these are of small consequence compared to those who are "fair-weather" Christians. It is easy to trust the Lord and praise Him when things are going well, but is that still the case when we face the storms of life? Like Peter, have we experienced "beginning to sink" (Matthew 14:30) when we have taken our eyes off of Jesus and focused on the storm?

Someone has said, "The flower that follows the sun, does so even on cloudy days." As that is the reality physically, where is our focus turned spiritually? Are we willing to FOLLOW THE SON, even on life's cloudy days? Do we trust Him as much when the forces of this life seem to be against us as when all is going well?

Let us be encouraged by the following words of Jesus:
"(12) Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever FOLLOWS ME will NOT WALK IN DARKNESS, but WILL HAVE THE LIGHT OF LIFE.'" (John 8:12 ESV)

As it is the sun's light that causes the flowers to turn toward it and come into full bloom, may it be the SON'S LIGHT that does the same for us through all the varied weather experienced in this realm. Just as the sun is always shining even above the clouds, let us look to the ever-shining LIGHT OF JESUS beaming brightly even when the world seems dark and gloomy? Keeping our focus following HIS LIGHT will help us to be all-weather Christians.

Have a great day BLOOMING IN HIS ETERNAL LIFE GIVING LIGHT!

Simple, Yet Profound!

There are songs of which we may listen with delight as little children sing them. In their simple innocence and easy acceptance of the truths of God's word, we may be warmed by their twinkling eyes and glowing faces and we may smile at how they can hardly keep their little bodies still as they sing their hearts out. Do we grow up and leave those songs behind? Though the verses may sound simple and the thoughts be what we have heard hundreds of times, are there still not deep truths to grip our soul? I'm glad we have a song leader in our congregation who still sees the value in those songs and leads us all in them from time to time.

"Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so; Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong. Yes, Jesus loves me; Yes, Jesus loves me; Yes, Jesus loves me; The Bible tells me so." [Anna B. Warner (1860) and William B. Bradbury (1862)]

To be honest with you I almost shortened that chorus with a few dots, knowing we all know what followed. However, is that declaration not worth repeating? There are other verses to this song and we do sing them, but think about the immense significance of just this one verse and the chorus. Do those words still have profound meaning for us today regardless of how old we are? In reality should those words not mean even a great deal more to us who have come to know more about Jesus, all He was willing to do on our behalf, and the eternity He has gone to prepare for us? Do we not know more about Jesus now than when we first sang the words of that song?

The Bible tells us many things. We need to keep going back to The Book on a daily basis. However, we must guard against skimming over words and concepts we have heard again and again and again. May they never lose their significance , but instead MEAN EVEN MORE to us every time we read them. "Yes, Jesus loves me." Do we KNOW it?

In the "revelation of Jesus Christ" (Revelation 1:1) recorded by John, we read. . .
"(4) John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, (5) and from JESUS CHRIST the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him WHO LOVES US AND HAS FREED US FROM OUR SINS BY HIS BLOOD (6) and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (Revelation 1:4-6 ESV)

"YES, Jesus loves me." I can hear the voice of one of the children in our congregation with that emphatic "YES" right now. Yes, it is true! It is never to be doubted!

"Yes, JESUS loves me." That's right, He's the One! The One not only of significance for this life, but for all eternity!

"Yes, Jesus LOVES me." Oh, yes, that is what He does and He does so dearly. That is why He left Heaven, walked this earth, put up with opposition and ridicule, and clearly revealed the genuineness of His perfect love through His self-sacrifice on the cross in order to provide us with forgiveness of the sins that were separating us from God.

"Yes, Jesus loves ME." Yes, it is very personal. We individually are very significant to Him. That personal relationship with Him is to be cherished above all!

Simple, yet profoundly significant. Knowing that Jesus loves us, we should be encouraged by all that has no power to separate us from that love. (Romans 8:38-39) May we never lose sight of the profoundness that "Yes, Jesus loves me." After all, the Bible does tell us so. And like His love, God's Word is true!

Have a great day KNOWING EMPHATICALLY THAT YES, JESUS LOVES US!

Standing In God's Way!

We may all struggle from time to time with preconceived ideas getting in the way of clearly understanding what God is trying to reveal to us through the Scriptures. Sometimes getting used to how things have been for a long time we may miss the FULL PERSPECTIVE of what God desires us to recognize. God's Word is established. It does not change. Praise God we have it to always go to in order to make certain what we are understanding or being taught is correct. Remember the Bereans who searched the Scriptures daily for that reason. (i.e. Acts 17:11)

Changing from old thinking was something of which even the Apostle Peter struggled. He had grown up with his mind focused on all things Jewish. This caused him to narrow his focus as the church began to grow. He was not accustomed to associating closely with Gentiles. That is why God provided Peter with a vision (Acts 10:10-16) prior to the coming of the messengers sent by Cornelius, a centurian of the Italian Cohort. (Acts 10:1) [As a side note here, perhaps we might wonder why God did not just have the angel tell Cornelius what he needed to hear (Acts 10:3) rather than having him send for Peter. (Acts 10:5) It is important to recognize there are tasks God has given for His people to fulfill and therefore we should prepare and be willing to fulfill them.]

When Peter saw what God's Will was -- when he understood "that God shows no partiality" (Acts 10:34), Peter shared the message of Jesus with Cornelius, his household, and all this centurian had invited to hear what Peter had to say. Then God confirmed things even further by having the Holy Spirit come upon them and Peter clearly understood how the HOPE OF SALVATION IN CHRIST WAS FOR ALL.

Others who shared the narrowed focus Peter had possessed, criticized him for having gone into the home of Gentiles and even having eaten with them. (Acts 11:2-3) Therefore, Peter recounted the vision he had and what had taken place at the house of Cornelius (which was also confirmed by those who had gone with Peter). Note the declaration Peter then made which revealed the change of his focus and therefore his behavior.

We read. . .
"(17) If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, WHO WAS I THAT I COULD STAND IN GOD'S WAY?' (18) When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, 'Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.'" (Acts 11:17-18 ESV)

"Stand in God's way!" Preconceived ideas and what we have become accustomed to can do just that! For Peter there was a needed change in thinking so that he would act appropriately toward others. He was not going to "stand in God's way." He was going to set his Jewish mind aside and recognize the WIDE DOOR GOD HAD OPENED for evangelism. Do we recognize it as well or have we become very select in our evangelism? As we sow the seed of the Word of God, we may not always know where it will germinate, grow, and be fruitful until we see the harvest God brings. May we, like Peter, resolve to not "stand in God's way", but rather walk in it so that He can continue to do His great work through us.

Have a great day SEEING AND LIVING ACCORDING TO GOD'S WAY!

Giving Up To Gain!

In the pursuit of gain, many have lost much of real value. Investments made are not always a sure thing. Many have gambled with the hope of gaining much only to lose it all. Even some holding dearly to what was seen of great value have found themselves to be on the losing end. Have we seen others in such a struggle or experienced it ourselves?

Henry Ward Beecher is noted as stating: "It is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich."

Jesus put it this way:
"(34) And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, 'If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow me. (35) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE AND THE GOSPEL'S WILL SAVE IT. (36) For WHAT DOES IT PROFIT a man TO GAIN the WHOLE WORLD AND FORFEIT his SOUL?'" (Mark 8:34-36 ESV) [also Matthew 16:24-26 and Luke 9:23-25]

Trying to save ourselves will put us on the losing end. It is through the denial of self and SURRENDER TO CHRIST that we find salvation by what He accomplished on the cross. Through the giving up of our own desires, goals, and aspirations for this realm while we instead embrace the desires and Will of God, we stand to gain the greatest blessings and ETERNAL RICHES we could ever be offered. This comes through a life investment that is no gamble because God has a rich inheritance reserved for us in Heaven. (1 Peter 1:4) That is where it is free from the threat of theft and decay (Matthew 6:20) as well as mismanagement. It is a sure thing. However, even in this realm we can presently enjoy the riches of godly love, inexpressible joy (1 Peter 1:8), peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7), and the riches of God's grace (Ephesians 1:7) through our continued relationship with Him. Having much, we can also be rich in generosity (2 Corinthians 8:2; 9:11) and so be a blessing to others in giving to meet their needs. In this view of what God desires for us, may we recognize giving up will provide the opportunity to gain so much more than we ever let go of to begin with.

Have a great day KNOWING THE CERTAINTY OF THE RICHES IN CHRIST!

Lay By In Store!

To "lay by in store" means to set something aside for when it is needed. When the time for its purpose in having been set aside comes, it is then brought out to be used. In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth, he wrote regarding the collection for needy saints in Judea. Paul exhorted these Christians to each "lay by in store" (1 Corinthians 16:2 KJV) on the first day of the week, according to how they had prospered, so that when he arrived a quick collection would not have to taken at that time. What had been collected would be ready to be handed over and then taken to meet the need for which it was intended. Therefore the "laying by in store" was a gradual and regular activity with the benefit of others in mind.

Consider another manner in which we might view "laying by in store." What are we continuing day-by-day to draw into our life? What kinds of thoughts are we storing up WITHIN OURSELVES? What attitudes? What desires? What feelings? What virtues? Etc. Whatever that is will have opportunity to be brought forth as we interact with others. Do we recognize the utmost importance of considering what we are storing up?

Jesus stated. . .
"(43) For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, (44) for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. (45) THE GOOD PERSON OUT OF THE GOOD TREASURE OF HIS HEART PRODUCES GOOD, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART HIS MOUTH SPEAKS." (Luke 6:43-45 ESV)

Whatever is WITHIN US is bound to come out at some point? It is only that which is brought in that can eventually be brought forth? Are we storing up WITHIN OURSELVES that which is God glorifying and will be beneficial to others when they are on the receiving end of our words and actions? If we are wisely laying by in store godliness WITHIN US, then that is what will be in store for those around us. May our heart be filled with the abundance of that which is of God. If we are prospering spiritually within, we will be prepared to respond to others in the most beneficial manner.

Have a great day BECOMING A STOREHOUSE OF GOOD TO GOD'S GLORY!

Streaming Life!

A stream of water generally flows the path of least resistance. It drops here, bends there, and flows toward the sea with the refreshing waters received from above in the mountains. All along its route there is benefit for the fish and other creatures of God, the trees and other vegetation draw nourishment from it as they grow along its banks, and even mankind benefits in what is provided to drink. Sometimes the stream's course is altered by man to channel it where it will do the most good or keep from doing damage through erosion. However, merely "going with the flow" of how things are in this world is not the best philosophy for DIRECTING the life. Where is the sense of purpose in that? Where is the plan that works its way toward a definite goal?

Solomon wrote. . .
"THE KING'S HEART IS A STREAM OF WATER IN THE HAND OF THE LORD; HE TURNS IT WHEREVER HE WILL." (Proverbs 21:1 ESV)

Surrendering to the GUIDING HAND OF THE LORD is where beneficial purpose may be found. Solomon did well as long as He allowed GOD TO DIRECT his heart. How good for this to be the picture of anyone in high position or involved in the directing of the lives of others. Nevertheless, even some who did not fully acknowledge or honor God (i.e. Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar) were used by God to bring about His purposes.

How good it is for each of us to have our heart as "a stream of water in the HAND OF THE LORD." . Rather than a cold frozen heart, we need to maintain one that allows the power of GOD TO DIRECT it. Are we allowing GOD TO TURN US where we will provide the benefit He desires our life to be? Where the course of our life needs changed, let us ALLOW GOD TO DIRECT our hearts from above. In this way we can become the nourishment and refreshment others around us need.

Have a great day GOING WITH HIS FLOW!

When Truth Is Not Loved! (part 2 of 2)

When it comes to deception and lying, others and self stand to get hurt. Telling the truth is easier to keep track of because crafted stories don't have to be remembered. It is much easier to recall what has actually been done, seen or heard. The work of deception just seems to dig the hole deeper and deeper until it is impossible to climb out.

Telling the truth means one merely has to tell it as it is. Still, how needlessly falsehood takes place in this world. Sometimes dishonesty is excused as a "necessity" to gain position in government in order to ultimately get good things done. In other words: the end justifies the means (or the meanness, as the case may be). Dishonesty has also been excused as a viable means to climb up the ladder of success in business in a highly competitive world. After all, if the rest of the business world cuts corners and is dishonest, how can the honest make it? Therefore it is of "necessity" to be dishonest. Therein is another lie not to be bought.

During the very early history of the Lord's church, many were selling property to help those in need. For some such giving even today is done with no desire to gain attention for self. However, for others they may want the notoriety for even more than they have actually done. Perhaps that is what a couple by the names of Ananias and Sapphira desired. They sold property and brought the proceeds from the sale to the Apostles, apparently with the boast they were giving it all, when in reality they were holding some back for themselves. Peter confronted Ananias regarding the deception.

We read. . .
"(3) But Peter said, 'Ananias, WHY HAS SATAN FILLED YOUR HEART TO LIE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? (4) While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? YOU HAVE NOT LIED TO MEN BUT TO GOD.'" (Acts 5:3-4 ESV)

Again -- as in yesterday's focus -- note the work of Satan involved in the heart. Rather than truth, Ananias and Sapphira (who in the following verses is clearly shown to have been an accomplice in the plan to lie) loved notoriety! Their gift -- even the portion it was -- could have been acceptable. It would have met real needs. However, their lie was not merely to the Apostles and anyone else who heard, but "TO THE HOLY SPIRIT" and "TO GOD" Who is fully aware of what is going on. How often even today is money, power, and personal gain placed above honesty? When attention for self is loved more than truth, GOD GETS LIED TO.

Ultimately it is God's judgment that is answered to, so why even think of pulling one over on Him? Though it has been noted that "You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time", let us remember we CANNOT FOOL GOD ANY OF THE TIME! Therefore let us love truth and love God Who is the source of all truth as we live a blessed life to His glory and praise.

Have a great day LIVING HONEST IN ALL THINGS!

When Truth Is Not Loved! (part 1 of 2)

Have you ever tried to fix something with very sticky tape, only to end up with tape sticking to yourself, making it difficult to release? Deception can have a similar effect. Some people lie to the point they BECOME STUCK, no longer able to remember the difference between the truth and the lie. There is a sense in which as they have deceived others, they become SELF-DECEIVED into believing the lie actually is the truth. Some even find themselves lying when the truth would still work to their advantage. Oh how the devil -- "the father of lies" (John 8:44 ESV) -- rejoices at the ENTANGLEMENT the web of deception creates.

In Paul's second letter to the church at Thessalonica he warned. . .
"(9) The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, (10) and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, BECAUSE THEY REFUSED TO LOVE THE TRUTH AND SO BE SAVED. (11) Therefore GOD SENDS THEM A STRONG DELUSION, SO THAT THEY MAY BELIEVE WHAT IS FALSE, (12) in order that all may be condemned WHO DO NOT BELIEVE THE TRUTH BUT HAD PLEASURE IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS." (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 ESV)

The great work of the devil is still that of deceiving today. He has been at it for a very long time. (i.e. Genesis 3:1-5 & 13) One of the best ways to protect ourselves is to love the truth. Otherwise we open ourselves up to falling victim to believing just about anything. Does it not surprise us what some embrace as truth that is no truth at all? What we love most is what we are most drawn to and to which we remain attached.

"Love the truth and so be saved." To not love the truth we are destined to perish, STUCK in a realm of deception with the great "deceiver of the whole world" himself. (Revelation 12:9) Since it is the truth that sets us free (John 8:32), may that be what we continue to love. It is the truth of God that brings the real fixes our life needs; truth that will stick for eternity!

Have a great day FIRMLY ATTACHED TO TRUTH!

Do Not Underestimate The Power!

The following has circulated via e-mail and surfaced in church bulletins, but I think it bears putting out there again for any who may not have read it. More detailed versions of the story can be found by searching the internet, but here it is as it appeared in the Volume 8, Number 6 edition of "House To House, Heart to Heart" (Jacksonville, Alabama).

*****
Helen Mrosla writes: In an earlier grade, I'd taped Mark's mouth shut for talking too much in class. Now he was one of my students in junior high math.

His class had worked hard all week. By Friday the students were getting cranky. So, for a break, I asked them to write the nicest thing they could about every student and hand it in. I compiled the results for each student and gave out the lists.

Several years later, Mark was killed in Vietnam. After the funeral, most of his former classmates gathered with Mark's parents and me for lunch. Mark's father took a wallet out of his pocket. 'They found this on Mark when he was killed,' he said. He carefully removed a folded, refolded, and taped paper -- the one on which I'd listed the good things Mark's classmates had said about him.

Charlie smiled sheepishly and said, 'I keep my list in my desk drawer.' Chuck's wife said, 'Chuck put his in our wedding album.' 'I have mine, too,' Marilyn said, 'in my diary.' Vicky reached into her pocketbook and brought out her frazzled list.
*****

I remember back in the late 1970's when I helped chaperone a group of teens across the country to a teen workshop. On our return trip home we all (adults and teens) wrote notes to each other stating the things we appreciated about them. I can remember how ENCOURAGING those personal comments were at the time and each subsequent time they were read. Being tired from the workshop and setting in for the long drive home, it was a great help to our focus.

Solomon stated. . .
"To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and A WORD IN SEASON, HOW GOOD IT IS!" (Proverbs 15:23 ESV)

May we never underestimate the power of an APPRECIATIVE and ENCOURAGING word. It could be remembered and remain powerful much longer than we might imagine. Think about those who ENCOURAGED us in the past and what they did or said that really picked us up. May we continue to pass such along. "A WORD IN SEASON" can not only be "good", but can make a powerful difference in the life of another as well.

Have a great day REMEMBERING THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF OUR WORDS!

Do Not Fear!

Going back thousands of years we read of false prophets seeking to gain a following for themselves. Even in Deuteronomy Moses recorded an easy method for telling if a prophet were from God or speaking on their own. If what they said did not come to pass then they were a false prophet who had spoken presumptuously. (Deuteronomy 18:22) These were not to be feared. Jesus even warned His disciples that "false christs and false prophets" would arise and attempt to lead astray. (Matthew 24:24) Praise God we have the Scriptures to look to for comparing to see if the claims or teachings of others are from God's message or from themselves.

As the church had begun -- following our Lord's ascension back to Heaven -- the Jewish leaders attempted again and again to stop the Apostles from preaching in the name of Jesus. (Acts 4) Even being imprisoned did not stop them. (Acts 5) As the Jewish counsel discussed what to do about the situation, Gamaliel -- who was a Pharisee and teacher of the law (Acts 5:34), as well as being one from whom even the Apostle Paul had learned much (Acts 22:3) -- spoke of several (namely Theudas and a Galilean called Judas) who had recent to that time risen up, developed a following, but whose movements had died when they did. (Acts 5:36-37) The work these had presumptively undertaken came to nothing! Gamaliel then went on to state something that ought to encourage us greatly.

We read. . .
"(38) So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; (39) BUT IF IT IS OF GOD, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OVERTHROW THEM. You might even be found opposing God!" So they took his advice," (Acts 5:38-39 ESV)

The Apostles were then beaten, again told to quit their preaching, and released. However, rather than fearing the threats, they rejoiced in being found worthy to suffer for the name of Christ. Everywhere they went "they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ." (Acts 5:42 ESV) The Apostles kept right on teaching, the church kept on growing, Saul was eventually converted and as Paul, God continued to spread the truth of Jesus.

Even today, the fact we believe the Gospel of Jesus reveals that work has yet to be overthrown! Though it sometimes appears the world under the power of the devil is winning, people are still responding to the Good News of salvation in Jesus. GOD'S WORK WILL CONTINUE because He is still the power behind it and all will someday see that His purpose still stands. (Proverbs 19:21) May we continue to be involved in GOD'S WORK, sharing GOD'S MESSAGE, and being encouraged that the result of such will last into eternity. Regardless of the opposition, rejoice that we are a part of something that will not fail!

Have a great day KNOWING WE ARE ON THE WINNER'S SIDE!

Pressing On!

Walking backward can be dangerous. Movement is usually slower and one can easily stumble and fall. Since our eyes are in the front of our head, walking FORWARD is much easier and safer. Also, the ankles seem to have been designed by God more for MOVING FORWARD than backward. Does that tell us something with regard to our life's progression? Sure we can turn the neck, but doing so for very long creates pain in the neck muscles. (Turning the neck to one side for a long meeting or class reveals this to be painfully true.) Is it not continuing to MOVE FORWARD rather than backward that should picture our life as Christians walking with God in faith?

Consider the following: The Australian coat of arms (granted by King George V of the United Kingdom in 1912) pictures two native Australian animals supporting it. These are the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) and the emu (Domaius novaehollandiae). It is thought that these two animals were chosen in reflection of a common belief that neither one moved backwards easily. Thus they were used to symbolize a nation moving forward. [source: http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/coat_of_Arms.pdf]

More than picturing the people of Australia, should that not be the picture of the people of God? Even as Paul described the spiritual armor God provides, it is pictured as covering the front for continuing to press on in the battle instead of retreating. (Ephesians 6:14-17) We are not to retreat from MOVING FORWARD with God Who is continually leading us on to victory.

With regard to the cost of discipleship, Jesus unequivocally declared. . .
"(62) Jesus said to him, 'NO ONE WHO PUTS HIS HAND TO THE PLOW AND LOOKS BACK IS FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.'" (Luke 9:62 ESV)

As we enter the kingdom of God we are to keep facing ahead toward our eternal destination. To look back can distract us from pressing on, even causing us to desire to go back to where we have been. Reading of the Exodus of God's people from Egypt, many times we come across their desire to return rather than trusting God to lead them safely to the promised land. (i.e. Numbers 14:4) Have we encountered the same struggle?

Let us share the resolve of Paul who stated. . .
"(13) Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: FORGETTING WHAT LIES BEHIND AND STRAINING FORWARD TO WHAT LIES AHEAD, (14) I PRESS ON TOWARD THE GOAL for the prize of THE UPWARD CALL OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS." (Philippians 3:13-14 ESV)

Like God's creatures -- the kangaroo and the emu -- and God's faithful servant Paul, let us unwaveringly trust our Creator by continually MOVING FORWARD in life. Though it may take "straining" at times, may we continue pressing on toward the heavenly goal!

Have a great day KEEPING EYES AHEAD AND ON THE GOAL OF GOD!

Impossible Made Possible!

"I'm my own person!"
"I scraped and worked hard and made a success of myself!"
"Look at what I have made of myself!"
"I can straighten myself out! I don't need anyone else!"

These are all the statements of the arrogant who would like to think they do not need anyone else, including God. They are the statements of those who are thinking too highly of themselves. If mankind were so smart to straighten out life's problems, then why is this world in such a mess? Why does there continue to be a lack of peace? Why do nations and individuals not get along? Because too many think they are smart enough to fix it all without the aid or wisdom of God. But the fact is WE NEED GOD!

Following a discussion Jesus had with a rich young man of whom there was the need to realize how riches can get in the way of man, His disciples asked the question . . .

"...'WHO THEN CAN BE SAVED?'" (Mathew 19:25 ESV)

In the next verse we read Jesus' response.

"But Jesus looked at them and said, 'WITH MAN THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.'" (Matthew 19:26 ESV)

It is God who makes our salvation possible. We cannot save ourselves. God must be in the picture. God must be a part of our lives. We need His help and His wisdom to change the things in our lives that need changing and keep us going the direction that will ultimately lead us to eternity with Him. WE CANNOT DO IT OURSELVES! IT IS (in the words of Jesus) "IMPOSSIBLE"! But it is ALL POSSIBLE WITH GOD!

Thank God for making the IMPOSSIBLE for us POSSIBLE! May we keep our focus on Him and His Will. It will not only benefit our life and relationships now, but our eternity also depends on it.

Have a great day KNOWING FOR WHAT WE CAN DEPEND ON GOD!

No Instruction Needed!

I love buying things that say "No assembly required." I also appreciate computer stuff that requires no set up; just plug it in and enjoy using it. Though there are things that may be bought that require some instruction to use properly -- coming with an instruction booklet, instruction video, or signup for a class -- there are some things so simple no instruction is necessary. However, LIFE is not one of those things. LIFE can be complicated. LIFE requires wisdom. So, where do we turn?

In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth he posed a question taken from Isaiah 40:13 which asks. . .
"For who has understood the mind of the Lord SO AS TO INSTRUCT HIM?" (1 Corinthians 2:16a ESV)

In order for someone to teach another, it is necessary to know more than they do or at least know something they don't. However, that is not the case with God. There is no one in a position to teach Him anything because even His foolishness (if He were to have any) is wiser than the wisdom of man. (1 Corinthians 1:25) We must always bear in mind GOD IS THE MASTER and WE WILL ALWAYS BE THE STUDENT!

Paul then went on to state. . .
"But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corinthians 2:16b ESV)

Now, having "the mind of Christ" still does not put one in a position to instruct God. It merely reflects LEARNING FROM GOD has been taking place. That LIFE LEARNING is to be an ongoing thing. Graduation from His school will not take place until we leave this earthly realm to enter the Heavenly one.

As we listen to God's Word the "mind of Christ" is to become more and more the foundation of our thinking and the basis from which we make our life choices. May we remain open to becoming Christ-like within so that our outward actions will reflect His character as well.

Have a great day CONTINUING TO BE GOD'S STUDENT!

Not For Sale!

The claim has been made that anyone can be bought if the price is high enough. However, to be influenced away from the truth and what we believe by any price reveals a lack of INTEGRITY. The temptation to accept may be there, but are we resolved to never sell out? Are we focused to hold firmly to the principles of life we have come to hold that are based on God's Will?

George Washington has been quoted as saying, "Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder." Is that what we see as we look around us? What has happened to the world's morals? What has become of honesty and INTEGRITY in the every day activities of life? Has it become difficult to know what others truly do believe? How true it is that those who will stand for nothing will fall for anything!

Someone else has stated, "Character is a victory, not a gift." Perhaps the truth relative to that statement is that the INTEGRITY revealed in our unwillingness to be swayed by the world is a sign of victory over the temptation to cave in to the pressure that can be great.

There were many who did not confess belief in Jesus because the focus of others was more important to them. John recorded this where we read. . .
"(42) Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (43) for they LOVED THE GLORY that comes FROM MAN MORE THAN the GLORY that comes FROM GOD." (John 12:42-43 ESV)

What (or who) has the greatest INFLUENCE in our life? Do we cave in to the desires of others? Can we be bought whether that be with money, position, or popularity? Are we seen as wishy-washy or firm in our convictions?

As Christians we should live acknowledging we are "not for sale!" Why? Because we really belong to another Who has already bought us.

Paul wrote. . .
"(19) Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN, (20) for YOU WERE BOUGHT WITH A PRICE. So GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV)

This being true, how can we even think of selling ourselves to the world's highest bidder? Let us remember the high price that was already paid by the Lord for our souls. (i.e. Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 1:18-19; 2 Peter 2:1) Belonging to God we need to continually uphold His Will. We are to hold onto our INTEGRITY in accordance with the character now instilled within us as children of God. May those around us begin to clearly see where we stand firm.

As Paul also exhorted. . .
"Therefore, my beloved brothers, BE STEADFAST, IMMOVABLE, ALWAYS ABOUNDING IN THE WORK OF THE LORD, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV)

Have a great day REMAINING GOD'S BLESSED POSSESSION!

Young And Old!

Though it has been a while since your parents or grandparents were young people, the truth remains -- as someone has said -- "Old people know more about being young than young people know about being old." [source: calendar quote]

Just as it had been God's expectation under the Old Law, Paul reiterated the expectation of HONORING PARENTS in his letter to the church at Ephesus where we read. . .

"(1) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (2) 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER' (this is the first commandment with a promise), (3) 'that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.'" (Ephesians 6:1-3 ESV)

This implies it is still God's desire for parents to be honored by their children. Though parents are all imperfect beings (yes, self included), during the years they have lived they have learned many valuable things to pass along to the next generation. Still, parents are to continue learning and should be willing to accept the reminders needed for fulfilling their God given task of nurturing their children. Therefore Paul did go on with an exhortation to fathers. Unfortunately, due to rebellion, many a young life has been cut short way before its prime due to ignoring needed warnings and wisdom.

Even within the church family honor and respect should be exercised. Peter exhorted. . .
"(5) Likewise, you who are YOUNGER, BE SUBJECT TO THE ELDERS. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'" (1 Peter 5:5 ESV)

The reference to "elders" here may include more than just the spiritual shepherds of the church; referring to older saints within the body of Christ. What Peter declared was to be done not just because they are older, but because of the spiritual maturity they have gained over the years of their Christian walk. However, did you note there is to be "HUMILITY" EXERCISED BY ALL? That HUMILITY of younger and older alike will go a long way in contributing to the fostering of honor and respect in these relationships. It is often the lack of HUMILITY that keeps us -- regardless of age -- from learning what we can from one another.

Solomon urged. . .
"(22) LISTEN TO YOUR FATHER WHO GAVE YOU LIFE, and DO NOT DESPISE YOUR MOTHER WHEN SHE IS OLD. (23) Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. (24) The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him. (25) LET YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER BE GLAD; LET HER WHO BORE YOU REJOICE." (Proverbs 23:22-25 ESV) [note also Proverbs 1:8; 6:20-22]

Are we living in a manner that would produce such gladness and rejoicing? As we all make the decision to submit to God and then to one another (note also Ephesians 5:21) we can experience the blessing of MUTUAL BENEFIT from each other regardless of age. There are things we can learn from one another. May God be glorified in the manner in which we all treat one another within our homes and in the church.

Have a great day LIVING RESPECTFULLY TO GOD'S GLORY AND YOUR BENEFIT!

The Rest Of His Story!

Biographies and autobiographies preserve a record of the actions and words of men and women who have touched the lives of others and left their mark on history's timeline. Through the reading of such we are sometimes inspired toward similarly making a difference in the lives of others. For some, volumes have been written and read again and again while for others the writings may have begun to collect dust to ultimately be forgotten.

As John was bringing his Gospel of the life and teachings of Jesus to a close, he made two very notable statements regarding our Lord. These are found at the end of the last two chapters where we read. . .

"(30) Now JESUS DID MANY OTHER SIGNS in the presence of the disciples, WHICH ARE NOT WRITTEN IN THIS BOOK; (31) but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." (John 20:30-31 ESV)

And. . .

"(25) Now there are also MANY OTHER THINGS THAT JESUS DID. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that THE WORLD ITSELF COULD NOT CONTAIN THE BOOKS that would be written." (John 21:25 ESV)

What a dynamic story is the story of Jesus. What an impact He had as He walked this earth. In light of John's declaration let me ask a question on which to meditate. Has HIS STORY ended? Think about that for a moment. Since Jesus lives and reigns eternally, is there not still more to HIS STORY? Our LORD'S STORY continues as lives are still being drawn to Him to be changed forever!

As disciples of Jesus, let us live with the acknowledgment that by the grace of God we have become a PART OF HIS STORY? There is a book in which our names have been recorded -- the Lamb's book of life" (Revelation 21:27 and 20:12 & 15) -- that is of greater significance than the books written by man. Being a part of our LORD'S STORY may our daily lives continue to say something good about Him so that others may also desire to become a part of HIS STORY as well.

Have a great day LIVING IN THE LORD'S NEVER ENDING STORY!

Just Brilliant!

There are times when someone commits a blunder of some kind to which someone else might sarcastically remark, "That was brilliant." What a strange expression for something that maybe was not in reality very bright. The real tragedy is those who refuse to acknowledge that which does truly SHINE brilliantly.

There were many who marveled at the things Jesus was able to do even while others saw and yet refused to believe in God's power being demonstrated. Though Jesus was able to heal the blind, there was nothing He could do for the self-blinded. Those who refused to see even as they continued to ask Him to show them a sign, appear to have been unwilling to believe no matter how many signs Jesus provided to testify regarding Who He truly was and is.

On one of the many occasions where Jesus' power was clearly demonstrated we read. . .
"(32) As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. (33) And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, 'NEVER WAS ANYTHING LIKE THIS SEEN IN ISRAEL.' (34) But the Pharisees said, 'He casts out demons by the prince of demons.'" (Matthew 9:32-34 ESV)

Though "the crowds marveled" at seeing what they had never seen before, the Pharisees refused to associate Jesus with God, but rather accused Him of doing His works by the power of the devil. These who thought they knew the Law and the Prophets were not very bright when it came to seeing Jesus as the fulfillment of all that had been written. Their blindness is clearly seen. However, it is also reflected in one of the words attributed to the crowds. They had never SEEN anything like this in Israel. The Greek word translated "seen" is "phaino" which literally means to bring forth into the light, cause to shine, or shed light. It means to shine, be bright or resplendent. [source: Strong's Lexicon] In other words, never had "anything like this SHINED in Israel." In spite of the brightness of the works Jesus did, the spiritually blind remained in the dark. Therefore they saw, but could not see.

When we recognize Jesus as the "Light of the world" (John 8:12; 9:5; 12:46), then everything about Him -- His actions and His words -- are seen to SHINE as well. As Jesus has touched our life, we also ought to SHINE; a SHINING that reflects His glory as we keep our life aligned with His! Truly knowing Jesus should brighten every aspect of our being. May our life help others see how believing is truly the bright thing to do!

Have a great day LIVING IN THE SON-LIGHT OF TRUTH!

Life In 3D !

Growing up I loved looking at pictures through a "View-Master" in which was inserted a circle of slides that were viewed as three-dimensional images. The images were so vivid it seemed as if one could just reach out and touch them. Today 3D movies are becoming more and more frequent productions. Viewing a 3D image on the big screen seems to put the action almost in your lap, even causing one to duck or wince at what appears to come directly at you.

Imagine living life in 3D. It is true we do not live in a one or even two dimensional world. We are able to reach out, touch, and interact with the things that are around us. However, what might mark the living of a 3D life in a spiritual sense?

Solomon exhorted. . .
"(5) TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, and DO NOT LEAN ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING. (6) IN ALL YOUR WAYS ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and HE WILL MAKE STRAIGHT YOUR PATHS." (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)

Within this passage we find 3 D's associated with our relationship to God. First there is our DEPENDENCE on Him. With our whole heart we are to trust in Him, rather than our own understanding. Our life is also to be marked by DEDICATION to God through always acknowledging Him and His Sovereignty as we go through all the activities of life. Nothing in life is to be viewed and approached separate from our consideration of God and His Will! When our relationship to God is right in this way, we have placed ourselves in a position to receive the wise DIRECTION God is eager to provide. His Way has been prepared before us so that we can walk in it to where He ultimately desires us to be.

Do we catch the 3D image? This is living life pictured as God would have it. It is what opens the way to living life in its most real sense. This is the picture of life fully connected to the One Who guides, sustains, and always exists to fulfill all that He has promised. May the "Master's-View" be the one we take for life!

Have a great day LIVING LIFE ON GOD'S BIG SCREEN!

Better Than Answers!

Have you ever asked someone a question to which they responded with a statement rather than an answer? Were you frustrated? Did you think they did not hear your question? Or were you so focused on your question that you did not pick up on the purpose of the statement made in place of an expected answer? Sometimes questions are asked to which there may be no answer. Other times questions are asked to which no answer is really needed if certain truths are grasped as they are shared. This is the style in which Paul sometimes wrote. He would ask a question, but then go on to make a statement rather than answering the question. It seems what Paul was trying to convey was, "forget the question and focus on the reality of GOD'S VIEW."

Note an example of this in Paul's letter to the church at Rome.
"(33) WHO SHALL BRING ANY CHARGE AGAINST GOD'S ELECT? It is God who justifies. (34) WHO IS TO CONDEMN? Christ Jesus is the one who died -- more than that, who was raised -- who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us." (Romans 8:33-34 ESV)

Did you catch who Paul said brings charges against us? Did you read who it is that condemns us? I didn't either.

Note these two verses also from the New Living Translation.
"(33) Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? Will God? No! He is the one who has given us right standing with himself. (34) Who then will condemn us? Will Christ Jesus? No, for he is the one who died for us and was raised to life for us and is sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us." (Romans 8:33-34 NLT) [© 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

Rather than answering his own questions Paul wanted his readers (including us) to focus on GOD'S VIEW of those in Christ. What should it matter what others might charge when God has justified us. And why even try to list those who may condemn us for our stand on God's principles when it is Christ Who has freed us from condemnation and continues to intercede on our behalf.

Earlier in this chapter Paul had encouraged. . .
"(1) THERE IS THEREFORE NOW NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:1-2 ESV)

Regardless of the world's view, let us be encouraged by the reality of GOD'S VIEW! It is GOD'S VIEW which counts anyway!

Have a great day ACCEPTING FACTS BETTER THAN ANSWERS!

Not Halted!

Limitations. Restricted activity. Seeming setbacks. Perhaps these are seen as halting ADVANCEMENT. However, is that always the case? Such may cause us to feel we are unable to make progress when they touch our lives, but that does not mean they stop what God can do in spite of them. This is a truth we see in the life of Paul. Even though he had been imprisoned (Philippians 1:7) and therefore did not have the freedom to travel among the churches as he had previously done, that did not stop what God was doing. Therefore, he was encouraged in spite of the limitations he experienced. This is the perspective Paul expressed in his letter to the church at Philippi.

We read. . .
"(12) I want you to know, brothers, that WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME HAS REALLY SERVED TO ADVANCE THE GOSPEL, (13) so that it HAS BECOME KNOWN throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that MY IMPRISONMENT IS FOR CHRIST. (14) And most of the brothers, having become CONFIDENT IN THE LORD by my imprisonment, are MUCH MORE BOLD TO SPEAK THE WORD without fear." (Philippians 1:12-14 ESV)

Though Paul was imprisoned, even among the "imperial guard" it became known why. His link to the Lord became clearly known. Paul also noted his imprisonment had inspired others not to refrain from speaking the Word of God, but rather to speak it more boldly. Besides this, due to his imprisonment, Paul had opportunity to reach some he might not have otherwise; even some among "Caesar's household." (Philippians 4:22) You could chain the man, but not the Word. (2 Timothy 2:8-9) The Gospel continued to ADVANCE!

The world may try to hold us back, but let us remember we are not in this alone. The way we respond to life's varied challenges can testify to a joyful faith that encourages others. We also may be surprised what other opportunities arise as well. May we keep our eyes open to the possibilities to serve God's purposes wherever we are and in whatever circumstances we may find ourselves. There is no retreat with God. May His ADVANCEMENT of truth continue in and through us.

Have a great day MOVING FORWARD WITH GOD!

Don't Thank Me!

Some things we may take for granted because we forget who to thank. They become so familiar to us we forget the true source. We work hard and provide for the necessities of life, but should God not still receive the thanks?

A poor man was given a loaf of bread, for which he thanked the baker. However, the baker responded, "Don't thank me. Thank the miller who made the flour." So the man went and thanked the miller who stated, "Don't thank me. Thank the farmer who planted the wheat." So he thanked the farmer, only to have him reply, "Don't thank me. Thank the Lord. He gave the sunshine, rain, and fertility to the soil, and that's why you have bread to eat." No matter how sophisticated or advanced mankind may become scientifically, we still can't create! That is God's work. [illustration selected and reworded]

Remember James declared. . .
"(16) Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. (17) EVERY GOOD GIFT AND EVERY PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." (James 1:16-17 ESV)

God is the Giver of all good things. To trace our life blessings back far enough, do we see their origin actually being of God? When we eat our daily bread, even though we have spent money we earned and brought it home from the store, GOD IS TO BE THANKED! He placed the power of life within the germinating seed that ultimately made that bread possible. He is the One Who sends the rain and the sun (Matthew 5:45) to encourage the growth. He placed the germ of fruitfulness within each tiny seed to produce bountifully to sustain life. God is truly the Giver of all good things, both physically and spiritually.

Though we rightfully express our appreciation to others for what they bring to us, let us at the same time remember our great indebtedness to God. May we not take any of His gifts for granted, but instead be ever THANKFUL TO HIM for them.

Have a great day ALLOWING DAILY BLESSINGS TO PROMPT DAILY THANKS!

No Shortcuts!

Quick fixes. Instant solutions. Shortcuts for getting stuff done. Fast-track goals and accomplishments. Faster transportation so we can "arrive" quicker. Does such ever mark our life focus? An "I just want to be there" mentality does not always accomplish what we need in life. Many things take time. There are things accomplished through a process rather than instantaneously. Therefore diligent perseverance in pressing on and patience in growth's gradual process need to mark life's journey.

It has been noted that prior to James A. Garfield becoming the 20th President of the United States, he had served as president of Hiram College in Ohio. One day there was a father who asked him if there was a shortcut that would enable his son to get through college in less than the four years usually required. This man wanted his son to get on with making money. Garfield's response was, "Of course there is a way; it all depends on what you want your boy to do. When God wants to grow an oak tree, He takes 100 years. When He wants to make a squash, He only takes two months." [adapted from illustration via Sermons.com newsletter]
Are we looking for "shortcuts" to SPIRITUAL GROWTH? Perhaps some would like a condensed version of the Bible so they can read it quicker. But then, what would be missed? Or how about an injection of spirituality, an inoculation against sin, an intravenous infusion of faith, or a pill of purity and one of patience, etc.?

Peter exhorted . . .
"(2) Like newborn infants, LONG FOR THE PURE SPIRITUAL MILK, that by it you may GROW UP into salvation -- (3) if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good." (1 Peter 2:2-3 ESV)

A baby does not immediately begin to chow down on steak. They are not ready for it. Their digestive system cannot process it. The same is true when one first becomes a Christian. There are basic truths to come to grips with before being able to digest and understand deeper things. In time growth takes place, habits change, and SPIRITUAL STATURE INCREASES.

It is also through the process of challenges that we increase the strength of our faith and the ability to stand firm in the Will of God.

James wrote. . .
"(2) Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, (3) for you know that THE TESTING OF YOUR FAITH PRODUCES STEADFASTNESS. (4) And let steadfastness have its full effect, THAT YOU MAY BE PERFECT AND COMPLETE, LACKING NOTHING." (James 1:2-4 ESV)

Not overnight stuff. Not a mere flip of the switch. SPIRITUAL GROWTH is a process that takes place as we submit more and more fully to the Lord. A tree that grows tall too fast may not have the strength to stand strong. Through the process of daily studying God's Word and going through the varying challenges and experiences of life we are able to grow stronger and more steadfast in the Lord. May we not settle for being a "squash", but rather grow to be a blessed "tree planted by streams of water." (Psalm 1:3) Such is the life that will prove to be fruitful and prosperous in the Will of God as we reject the "shortcuts" and follow the Divine Way!

Have a great day GROWING STRONGER DAY-BY-DAY IN THE LORD!

Whose Voice?

Under the leadership of Saul, God sent the nation out to fight against the Amalekites. This was because Amalek had opposed Israel when they were on the way up from Egypt. (1 Samuel 15:2) The directions from God were to devote everything to destruction which included mankind and beast. (1 Samuel 15:3) Therefore Saul led the people out to battle, the Amalekites were defeated (1 Samuel 15:7), but they spared King Agag and the best of the flocks and herds. They did, however, destroy all that was despised and worthless. (1 Samuel 15:9)

When Samuel went to confront Saul about his sin -- even though Saul claimed to have obeyed the Lords' command (1 Samuel 15:13) -- note his defense.

We read. . .
"(15) Saul said, 'They have brought them from the Amalekites, for THE PEOPLE SPARED THE BEST of the sheep and of the oxen TO SACRIFICE TO THE LORD YOUR GOD, and the rest we have devoted to destruction.'" (1 Samuel 15:15 ESV)

Samuel then pointed out the mission on which God had sent Saul and asked why he had not obeyed. But again, Saul claimed to have obeyed (1 Samuel 15:20), when in fact he had not fully complied.

Then again Saul stated. . .
"(21) But THE PEOPLE TOOK OF THE SPOIL, sheep and oxen, THE BEST OF THE THINGS DEVOTED TO DESTRUCTION, TO SACRIFICE TO THE LORD YOUR GOD in Gilgal." (1 Samuel 15:21 ESV)

It seems that then -- just as it is today -- if people will say something enough times they think it will begin to sound acceptable and okay, even though God has stated differently. It may have been a nice gesture, but it was NOT GOD'S WILL! Therefore Samuel went on with that familiar quote regarding it being better to obey than sacrifice. (1 Samuel 15:22)

Even then Saul was not done trying to excuse himself. A few more verses further we read. . .
"(24) Saul said to Samuel, 'I HAVE SINNED, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words, because I FEARED THE PEOPLE AND OBEYED THEIR VOICE." (1 Samuel 15:24 ESV)

Saul did eventually acknowledge his sin. He had not obeyed as he claimed earlier. However, in a sense he placed the blame on the people. Nevertheless the blame still rested on himself because he chose the voice he would obey.

Is that not what sin generally boils down to; who it is we are going to listen to and obey? Sometimes we may be tempted to listen to and obey our own selves. Other times we can be tempted to listen to and obey the voices of our peers around us. But it is the WILL OF GOD that should command the attention of our ears and be surrendered to in obedience. We may not always know the why of God's commands, but as we acknowledge His Wisdom is above us and His Way is righteous, we should accept and UNDERSTAND HIS EXPECTATION is obedience. May we keep our ears inclined toward Him!

Have a great day DELIGHTING THE LORD IN FOLLOWING HIS DESIRES!

Where He Goes!

Though some thought they knew where Jesus came from, did they really? There were those who could only see Him as a boy who had grown up in the small town of Nazareth in the home of a humble carpenter. (John 6:42) They knew his brothers and sisters. (Matthew 13:55-56) However, the understanding seems to have been that when the Christ came, they would not know where he was from. (John 7:27) This is why they struggled accepting Jesus in spite of the miracles he performed and the wisdom he possessed. To them it was not reasonable to accept His statement that He had come down from Heaven. (John 6:42)

Not only did Jesus mention where He was from, but He also asserted He knew where He was going. (John 8:14) Though we may be aware of where we have been, do we sometimes struggle with knowing where we are going? Jesus told some that where He was going, they could not come, but would instead die in their sin. (John 8:21) Jesus also told His disciples that where He was going they could not come. (John 13:33) When Peter asked where the Lord was going Jesus then responded that where He was going he could not come now, but WOULD FOLLOW AFTERWARD. (John 13:36)

When encouraging the disciples that when He went away He would go and prepare a place for them and would then return to take them to where He was (John 14:1-3), He went on to state. . .

"(4) And YOU KNOW THE WAY TO WHERE I AM GOING." (John 14:4 ESV)

It was Thomas who spoke up this time, stating they did not know where He was going so "How can we know the way?" (John 14:5 ESV) This is when Jesus made that familiar statement. . .

"(6) Jesus said to him, "I AM THE WAY, and the truth, and the life. NO ONE COMES TO THE FATHER EXCEPT THROUGH ME." (John 14:6 ESV)

"How can we know the way?" "I AM THE WAY!" Knowing THE WAY to where Jesus has gone is by knowing Him as THE WAY. For us to get where He is we must simply KEEP FOLLOWING JESUS. We may not always know all the places where life's path will take us, but with our eyes on Jesus we can know where our journey will end? Where He leads, let us FOLLOW! The destination will surely be worth the journey.

Have a great day FOLLOWING "THE WAY" WE KNOW LEADS TO GOD!

After Serving!

When Jesus was with His disciples as the time of His crucifixion and eventual departure from this realm drew near (John 13:1), He got up from the supper and began washing the disciples' feet. In this humble act Jesus set an example for them to follow. (John 13:15) As John recorded this touching scene of Jesus' interaction with the Twelve, he noted. . .

"(12) When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and RESUMED HIS PLACE, he said to them, 'Do you understand what I have done to you?'" (John 13:12 ESV)

After Jesus had completed this act of service, He RESUMED HIS PLACE at the table with them. Being rightfully known as their "Lord" and "Teacher" (John 13:13-14), I would assume Jesus had been given the chief seat among them. He left that place (John 13:4), served each one of them by washing their feet, and then RESUMED HIS PLACE.

Therein is also a picture of the whole of what Jesus has done on our behalf. He left the glory of Heaven (John 17:5), came to serve (Matthew 20:28), and as long as He was in this realm He continued in the works of Him Who had sent Him. (John 9:4) Then, after completing all the work He came to fulfill (John 17:4; 19:30), He left this earth to RESUME HIS PLACE.

Where Mark recorded the Lord's last words to His disciples we read. . .
"(19) So then THE LORD JESUS, after he had spoken to them, was TAKEN UP INTO HEAVEN and SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD." (Mark 16:19 ESV)

Yes, after serving the purposes of the Father here on earth, Jesus RESUMED HIS PLACE with the Father in Heaven. Is that not His rightful place? Yet, what a marvelous example of living a God glorifying life He has given us.

What are we doing? Are we following in His steps? Are we not also to continue working the works of God as long as it is day? (John 9:4) The night (the time) is coming when our works here will cease. Then, after serving, we will receive the place Jesus has gone to prepare for us. (John 14:2-3; 1 Thessalonians 4:17; 1 Peter 1:4) However, for now our place presently is to serve. May our life be spent doing so to our Lord's glory and praise.

Have a great day SERVING WHILE ENCOURAGED BY WHAT IS YET TO COME!

God's Desired Response!

Though attempts were made again and again by the leaders to trap Jesus with their questions, they were unable to do so. That is the power of truth and the wisdom of God. Though it is denied, it can still stand on its own. Jesus' life was also plotted against because though the signs He performed could not be denied, there were still those of the leadership who just would not believe. (John 12:37)

After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead -- having been already dead four days (John 11:39) -- many more who saw what He had done believed in Him. (John 11:45) However, there were some who went and told the Pharisees what they had seen and the response by the chief priests and Pharisees and the Council was that they needed to do something about the situation. (John 11:46-48) Thus they plotted all the more earnestly to make "plans to put him to death." (John 11:53)

When a dinner was put together in Jesus' honor in the home of Mary and Martha, we read that when a large crowd "learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead." (John 12:9) How did that impact the Jewish leadership?

We read. . .
"(10) So the chief priests made PLANS TO PUT LAZARUS TO DEATH AS WELL, (11) because ON ACCOUNT OF HIM MANY OF THE JEWS WERE GOING AWAY AND BELIEVING IN JESUS." (John 12:10-11)

There seems to have been a sense in which the leadership not only saw the need to get rid of Jesus, but this latest evidence of His power as well; Lazarus brought back from the dead. Does that sound like attempted cover up? That would again be their approach after Jesus' resurrection. (read Matthew 27:64; 28:12-15) Then, on top of this dilemma relating to Jesus' popularity, there was His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. What was the response of the leadership then?

We read. . .
"(19) So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are gaining nothing. LOOK, THE WORLD HAS GONE AFTER HIM.'" (John 12:19 ESV)

Reading that response I can't help but think how wonderful the reality of that would be; for the WHOLE WORLD TO GO AFTER JESUS. Is that not the response God desires? It was FOR THE WORLD that He sent His Son. (John 3:16) And every day God withholds His destructive hand from a sinful world is an opportunity THE WORLD should not pass up.

Peter wrote. . .
"(8) But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (9) THE LORD is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but IS PATIENT toward you, NOT WISHING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD REACH REPENTANCE." (2 Peter 3:8-9)

Yes, that is God's desire for THE WORLD! Repentance! Acceptance! Salvation in Christ! May we keep praying for THE WORLD while also doing our part in sharing the Good News of Jesus so as to facilitate opportunities to respond to God in belief that translates into living to His glory and praise. Let us not give up trying as we recognize doing what God desires us to do can bring others to respond as He desires.

Have a great day DIRECTING THE WORLD'S ATTENTION TOWARD JESUS!

Inextinguishable Light!

It was at early dawn, as the sun had begun to rise, that the women returned to the tomb with the spices they had prepared for Jesus' burial. (Luke 24:1) On the way it dawned on them they would need someone to roll the large stone away from the entrance. (Mark 16:3) However, as they approached they found the stone had already been rolled away and upon further inspection found Jesus' body was no longer there. (Luke 24:3) Then there appeared with them two men in dazzling apparel; a sight that greatly startled them. (Luke 24:4-5)

In Luke's account we read. . .
"(5) And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, 'WHY DO YOU SEEK THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD? (6) He is not here, but HAS RISEN. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, (7) that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and ON THE THIRD DAY RISE.' (8) And they remembered his words, (9) and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest." (Luke 24:5-9 ESV)

If you are looking for the dead, a tomb is a good place to start. Jesus was not dead! He HAD RISEN! His Life and Light could not be snuffed out!

Considering the sun that rose that morning; what would it take to extinguish its light? It would take an act of God. However, the GREATER LIGHT is the Light of the RISEN SON Who continues to shine for all Who are willing to walk in His Light.

In the Revelation, as John described the new Jerusalem, he stated. . .
"(22) And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. (23) And the city has NO NEED OF SUN OR MOON to shine on it, for THE GLORY OF GOD GIVES IT LIGHT, AND ITS LAMP IS THE LAMB. (24) By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, (25) and its gates will never be shut by day -- AND THERE WILL BE NO NIGHT THERE." (Revelation 21:22-25 ESV)

A time and place where no need for the sun to shine because the glory of God and the Lamb are SUFFICIENT LIGHT! The sun that rose this morning will set this evening. Jesus is the UNSETTING SON! He rose from the dead never to die again. He lives! He reigns! He shines! Though some may hide their eyes from His Light, His Light will not be extinguished! Praise God for the Everlasting Light we can live in now and for eternity.

Have a great day LIVING IN THE LIGHT OF THE RISEN SON!

Wondering In Darkness!

After Jesus died on the cross, Joseph of Arimathea -- a secret disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews (John 19:38) -- requested the body of Jesus. Then, assisted by Nicodemus -- the one who had come to Jesus earlier at night (John 3) -- Jesus' body was placed in a new tomb. (John 19:39-41)

Consider the darkness of the tomb. Therein was a view of death, lifelessness, the ceasing of the glorious and powerful works that had been witnessed, and the seeming finality of hopes now dashed. The tomb was sealed and the mourners were left to walk away "wondering" what to make of it all. Though Jesus had spoken of the third day -- a point not missed by some of the Pharisees who got permission to have the tomb guarded (Matthew 27:62-66) -- the disciples did not understand. Due to a veil of darkness of deep sorrow and misunderstanding, they could not see.

People wander in darkness, unable to find their way. They also "wonder" in the darkness of not understanding what seems to go on in this life. This is where the disciples found themselves after Jesus died on the cross and was placed in the tomb. What then were they to do? What of the EVERLASTING KINGDOM Jesus had spoken of and the ministry for which He had prepared them? Had they given up everything (Mark 10:28) for nothing?

For a long time I have enjoyed reading the conversation between Jesus and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus following His resurrection. I have the advantage of reading it with a fuller understanding than those who witnessed the scenes centered around the cross. Since the resurrection seemed such an impossibility, the two walking did not recognize Jesus when he joined them on the road. The Scriptures tell us their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. (Luke 24:16) Their focus on Jesus had been one of hope that He was the one to redeem Israel. (Luke 24:21) And even though they had received news of the empty tomb, they seemed unable to process what was going on. (Luke 24:22-24) It was all just too amazing to make sense in their minds. However, they did eventually see! (Luke 24:30-35)

Stepping back again to the scene on the cross, there was one who in the midst of the darkness of what was going on seemed to see what others could not. Consider the request made by one of the thieves who was crucified with Jesus.

We read. . .
"(42) And he said, 'JESUS, REMEMBER ME WHEN YOU COME INTO YOUR KINGDOM.' (43) And he said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.'" (Luke 23:42 ESV)

Is that a strange request to be made from one dying man to another? While others thought they were witnessing the end to their KINGDOM HOPES, this thief did not see it that way. He still SAW THE KINGDOM COMING! Come it would! Come it did! And JESUS REIGNS! Are we enjoying living in the LIGHT OF HIS KINGDOM?

In his Colossian letter, Paul exhorted them toward. . .
"(12) giving thanks to the Father, who has QUALIFIED YOU TO SHARE IN THE INHERITANCE OF THE SAINTS IN LIGHT. (13) He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the KINGDOM OF HIS BELOVED SON, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:12-14 ESV)

Praise the Lord for the light of HIS KINGDOM in which we now live and that by the cross we have been redeemed and forgiven of our sins. May we live in faith believing that the Lord will fulfill everything He has promised regardless of how amazing it may seem. Keeping our eyes on Jesus we can live believing the "wonder" of it all!

Have a great day REALIZING GAINING HIS KINGDOM IS STILL EVERYTHING!

Putting Out The Light?

When Nicodemus came to Jesus "at night", during their conversation Jesus noted light in relation to His coming into the world. (John 3:19) However, there were those who did not like THE LIGHT. (John 3:19-20) Later on Jesus would refer to Himself as "the LIGHT OF THE WORLD." (John 8:12; 9:5) Those who hated THE LIGHT continued to seek to put out that LIGHT by attempting again and again to trap Jesus with their questions and find reason for accusation. Though they were blinded to God's plan in using the cross -- as Jesus even indicated in His discussion with Nicodemus (John 3:14-15) -- they became party to Jesus' death on it.

After Jesus had been on the cross for three hours -- having been placed there the third hour of the day (Mark 15:25) -- we read. . .
"(44) It was now about the sixth hour, and there was DARKNESS OVER THE WHOLE LAND until the ninth hour, (45) WHILE THE SUN'S LIGHT FAILED. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. (46) Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!' And having said this he breathed his last." (Luke 23:44-46 ESV)

There were hearts that were darkened by deep sorrow and sadness in watching our Lord's suffering. It did appear to be the end. As the "sun's light failed" it was almost as if creation was in mourning over what was taking place. It was a dark deed that had been done. In this work of the devil and under the blind leadership of the Jewish officials it truly was a time of darkness. (Luke 22:53) However, as the "sun's light failed", had the SON'S LIGHT also failed? Had God's eternal plan been thwarted? Had darkness overpowered THE LIGHT?

In attempting to encourage the disciples before this time of confusion, Jesus had told them that in a little while they would not see Him, but then in a little while they would see Him again. (John 16:16) Jesus, knowing they struggled understanding that (John 16:17-19) went on to state. . .

"(20) Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but YOUR SORROW WILL TURN INTO JOY. (21) When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. (22) So also you have sorrow now, but I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN, and YOUR HEARTS WILL REJOICE, and NO ONE WILL TAKE YOUR JOY FROM YOU." (John 16:20-22 ESV)

The darkness would be there for a moment, but THE LIGHT was not put out for long. The darkness experienced in view of the cross was soon to turn to the LIGHT OF JOY that could not be taken from them. In view of Jesus are we experiencing THAT JOY as well? As we continue to keep our focus on Jesus -- THE LIGHT -- may the LIGHT OF JOY continue to be radiant in and through our lives.

Have a great day JOYFULLY LIVING IN THE EVERLASTING LIGHT!

The Chosen Path!

In life, some people choose to take the path of least resistance. They don't want to have to work too hard to forge on. Others try to remain on the beaten path. Perhaps since it is obvious many have already gone that way, the supposition is it must be good. Then there are those who always like to get off the beaten path. Maybe they are just curious about what else might be out there along the way. Why have we chosen the path we are taking in life? Have we chosen carefully and purposefully?

Solomon stated. . .
"(16) The wage of the righteous leads to life, the gain of the wicked to sin. (17) Whoever HEEDS INSTRUCTION is on THE PATH OF LIFE, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray." (Proverbs 10:16-17 ESV)

Listening to needed INSTRUCTION helps keep life on the right track. Are any of us not in need of it. When we ignore INSTRUCTION -- choosing to go where our desires or whims of the moment lead -- who knows where life's journey may lead! The wages Solomon referred to are not money, but are rather the natural result of righteous living. They are the return for living right before God. That follows the idea of reaping what one sows. (i.e. Galatians 6:7-8) When we do not remain on the "path of life" the tragic result is not only that of putting our own selves in peril, but we become guilty of leading others astray as well. We must recognize how choosing the right path is more than just about ourselves!

Retaining a TEACHABLE SPIRIT enables us to be properly led. To be too arrogant to SEEK DIRECTION is to find ourselves hopelessly lost. Rather than our life being pictured by a careless meandering, may it be marked by a purposeful walking on the "path of life" under the instruction of the Will of God. This will prove beneficial to ourselves and those around us. May we never forget the souls -- ours and others -- that are at stake!

Have a great day WALKING THE PATH IN WHICH THE LORD LEADS!
