Friend?

Most of us have probably heard the expression, "With friends like that, who needs enemies." This conveys the idea that a supposed friend was not being very much of one. Rather than the relationship being a benefit, it became a detriment. This came to mind yesterday as I read Matthew's account of the betrayal of Jesus.

We read. . .
"(48) Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, 'THE ONE I WILL KISS IS THE MAN; seize him.' (49) And he came up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi!' AND HE KISSED HIM. (50) Jesus said to him, 'FRIEND, DO WHAT YOU CAME TO DO.' Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him." (Matthew 26:48-50 ESV)

Friend? Betrayal with a kiss? What's wrong with that picture? But that is exactly what "betrayal" is all about! It blindsides when we're not looking. It comes out of nowhere when we least expect it. It sneaks up and bites and it stings. It also reveals who may not really be a friend at all because the action is contrary to what seemed to be and thus the once concealed disloyalty is made evident.

Thinking of Judas' use of a KISS to identify Jesus brought to mind a statement made by Solomon where we read. . .
"(6) FAITHFUL ARE THE WOUNDS OF A FRIEND; PROFUSE ARE THE KISSES OF AN ENEMY." (Proverbs 27:6 ESV)

A friend may tell us what we need to hear and it might hurt, but it still stands to benefit us. The kisses of an enemy, however, are deceptive. May our LOYALTY to Christ and others be clearly evident as we seek to glorify Him in all things and bring true benefit to the lives of others. Then our KISS or other sign of genuine friendship will mean what it is intended to mean. Such living can surround us with the same.

Have a great day BEING A FAITHFUL FRIEND!

Life On The Right Side!

When we talk about where "The Rubber Meets The Road" we are noting that which is of a practical nature or what is of great significance as far as our life actions. It is where we make CONTACT as we move through life. It is where what WE BELIEVE and what WE DO COME TOGETHER. As we go about our daily lives, does what we believe line up our actions on the right side? Though we have been saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, the MANNER IN WHICH WE LIVE is still of eternal consequence.

On my perpetual daily calendar for yesterday's date there was the following short prayer: "Heavenly Father, lift me from my complacency. Make me do more than be aware of those who suffer, those who are hungry, those who are ill. Arouse in me a helpful spirit. Amen."

I have read from this calendar each morning for several years, but those words struck me this time because part of my morning Bible reading just happened to have been from the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew. In verses 31-46 of that chapter, Jesus got pretty practical with regard to the expectation of our CONNECTION WITH HIM. When Jesus told this parable relating to the final judgment and the separation of the "sheep" (those rewarded with eternal life, vs.46) and the "goats" (those rewarded with eternal punishment, vs.46), He illustrated the significance of what we DO FOR OTHERS. It is far too easy to get caught up in "religion" while at the same time not valuing human life as much as we should. Perhaps that is also a lesson from Jesus' parable of the "Good Samaritan". (Luke 10:29-37) In that parable it was not the "religious elite" who HELPED the man who had fallen victim to the robbers, but a Samaritan who had compassion and went out of his way to meet the need.

In this judgment scene parable recorded in Matthew twenty-five, Jesus stated. . .
"(34) Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (35) For I was hungry and YOU GAVE ME FOOD, I was thirsty and YOU GAVE ME DRINK, I was a stranger and YOU WELCOMED ME, (36) I was naked and YOU CLOTHED ME, I was sick and YOU VISITED ME, I was in prison and YOU CAME TO ME.'" (Matthew 25:34-36 ESV)

When these responded regarding when they had done this, the reply was. . .
"(40) And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, AS YOU DID IT TO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BROTHERS, YOU DID IT TO ME.'" (Matthew 25:40 ESV)

When Jesus noted those on the left, the picture was the converse. Their response almost seemed to imply that had they ever seen Jesus with any of those needs they would have surely helped. However, when had He been in such a need? Are we eager to "serve Jesus", but forget about the PRACTICAL SERVICE of meeting needs around us? The religion of Christ to which we have been called is not merely some rigid religious ritual to be exercised in holy piety, but very practical in its principles of worship to God and service to others. Following Christ is about living like Him; pleasing the Will of the Father and touching other's lives.

Though there is no substitute for daily Bible reading, prayer, and regularly assembling together as Christians (Hebrews 10:25) so that we can encourage and be encouraged (Hebrews 10:24), none of that was mentioned here by Jesus. Our Christianity is more than what we do behind closed doors or within our assemblies together. What are our day-to-day activities reflecting as far as our relation to Christ? May the spirit in which we serve others be as it being done to the Lord. (note also Ephesians 6:7) That is what marks living as one of the Shepherd's sheep.

Have a great day WITH RELIGION'S RUBBER MEETING THE ROAD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS!

Up Minded!

In connection with the use of computers we refer to downloading and uploading. Both relate to the transfer of data and information. But what about our thinking? Do we most often find ourselves "down-thinking" or "up-thinking"? What I am referring to relates to our life perspective. Where are our minds? We have all most likely had the experience of taking a trip without leaving our chair; our body physically being one place while our mind is somewhere else. Perhaps we even resented having those thoughts interrupted and our mind brought back into the "real" world. However, is it possible for our mind to actually be on that which is real and of greater significance than where we physically are?

In Paul's letter to the church at Colossae, he exhorted. . .
"(1) If then you have been raised with Christ, SEEK THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (2) SET YOUR MINDS ON THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, not on things that are on earth." (Colossians 3:1-2 ESV)

The Greek in these two verses more literally refers to UP-SEEKING and UP-THINKING. Is our seeking with an upward aim and our thinking with an upward gaze? Do we truly love and desire above all that is earthly, the THINGS ABOVE? Certainly we still need to guard against being so HEAVENLY MINDED that we are of no earthly good. Still, with the MIND ON HEAVEN our perspective regarding the things of this earthly realm will be kept in balance while we eagerly wait in expectation of the greater glories to come. This is the way we join with God in His will being done on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10) Therefore, in this sense it is not only proper, but also essential for us to live with our minds in another world; the HEAVENLY ONE. May we keep it up!

Have a great day SEEKING HEAVEN'S PERSPECTIVE!

Being Alive!

Perhaps we have all seen a child COME ALIVE simply at the mention of going to the circus, getting an ice-cream cone, or some other special outing or treat. What about the teenage boy who COMES ALIVE at the mention of a certain type of car or a teenage girl who is told there is a great sale at the mall? What is it that has our attention and BRINGS US TO LIFE? What is it we are truly ALIVE TO? Since Paul noted it is possible to be dead even while one is living (note 1 Timothy 5:6), what is it that truly makes us FEEL ALIVE?

Though Paul wrote to the Philippians as a prisoner, he stated. . .

"(20) as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. (21) FOR TO ME TO LIVE IS CHRIST, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:20-21 ESV)

Being alive is more than just breathing. What is it that is being breathed into our life? What has our attention and is most influencing us? JESUS CHRIST became the VERY ESSENCE of Paul's life. His life was marked by a death to self so that Christ could live within him. (note also Galatians 2:20) That was the power source that energized and GAVE LIFE to himself and his ministry regardless of the circumstances being experienced. Though Paul did not always know what tomorrow might bring, he did not live holding his breath. Rather, he pressed on with a steadfast faith that he would receive what the Lord had promised him as he entrusted his life completely to God.

Truly knowing Christ and what He has done on our behalf ought to cause us to COME ALIVE as well. Without Christ we would be dead in our sins. However, being ALIVE IN CHRIST means we are whole and well spiritually and thus enabled to live to the fullest now and for an eternity to come. Should that not light up our eyes, get us up on our feet eager to serve His purposes, and experience the real joy of living? May we remain ALIVE TO the purposes for which we have been saved and called to walk with Him.

Have a great day BREATHING DEEPLY OF THE THINGS OF GOD!

Wise Walkers!

Who we walk with can impact what we do along the way, where we go, and what our pace might be. With whom we walk may also determine on what our conversation or thoughts will be focused. The CHOICES of associations we make today can even be an indicator of future things. How much consideration do we give those CHOICES?

Solomon in his great wisdom advised. . .
"(20) Whoever WALKS WITH THE WISE BECOMES WISE, but the COMPANION OF FOOLS WILL SUFFER HARM." (Proverbs 13:20 ESV)

And Paul warned. . .
"(33) Do not be deceived: 'BAD COMPANY RUINS GOOD MORALS.'" (1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV)

Both Solomon and Paul indicated the potential of becoming like those with whom we CHOOSE to associate in life. Who we CHOOSE to spend the most time with stand to have the greatest influence in our life. Are we walking with God? (Genesis 5:24) Are we walking with the Lord Jesus Christ? (Colossians 2:6) Are we keeping in step with the Spirit? (Galatians 5:25) Are we CHOOSING to walk with those of like spirit? (note Philippians 3:17)

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus he urged. . .
"(15) LOOK CAREFULLY THEN HOW YOU WALK, not as unwise but AS WISE, (16) making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. (17) Therefore do not be foolish, but UNDERSTAND WHAT THE WILL OF THE LORD IS." (Ephesians 5:15-17 ESV)

May we CHOOSE WISELY, recognizing our eternal destiny hangs in the balance.

Have a great day CHOOSING LIFE COMPANIONS CAREFULLY!

Pay Closer Attention!

Imagine being in a warm tropical climate. Sun warmly shining. Cool water inviting. A great opportunity to relax for a while. Could there be anything more relaxing than lying back floating on an air mattress or in a little rubber raft while the warmth of the sun touched the skin? With the gentle movement of the water against this "floating bed", perhaps a little nap would sound just right. However, what a shock to wake up and realize that the unseen current has gradually caused a DRIFTING AWAY from the shore and out to sea.

Though currents can be strong, they are not always visible to the eye. I remember fishing a number of years ago with a friend just off a point near our town. We would drop our lines over the side of the boat and wait for the fish to bite. However, before long my friend would say, "Pull up your lines so we can move back in toward shore." This happened several times. Though it was not felt, the current kept pulling us back out further into the water. While I was focused on fishing, we kept DRIFTING AWAY from where we wanted to be, but the friend who owned the boat was fortunately also focusing on what was happening to our position on the water.

The Hebrew writer exhorted. . .
"(1) Therefore we must PAY MUCH CLOSER ATTENTION TO WHAT WE HAVE HEARD, LEST WE DRIFT AWAY FROM IT. (2) For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, (3) HOW SHALL WE ESCAPE IF WE NEGLECT SUCH A GREAT SALVATION? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, (4) while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will." (Hebrews 2:1-4 ESV)

We need to keep focused on what God has revealed to us through His Word. When we don't spend adequate time reading and studying the Scriptures, it is far too easy to be drawn away by other ideologies. The currents of the thoughts of men can gradually cause us to DRIFT AWAY when we fail to pay close attention.

Just as the pilots of planes and ships keep an eye on their compass as they move along to make certain they remain on course, living life requires the same kind of earnest attention. If we fail to exercise such attention we can soon find ourselves DRIFTING AWAY from where we want to be, where we are safe, and from the path that leads to eternal life. May God's Word be the compass we daily use for remaining on course.

Have a great day KEEPING THE HEAVENLY SHORE IN VIEW!

Godly Good!

There can be the form of something when in reality it is a fake. This is no more true than in the realm of religion. GODLINESS is not real that is merely outward, but rather that which wells up from a PROPER ESSENCE WITHIN.

Note what Paul warned Timothy was coming.
"(1) But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. (2) For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, (3) heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, (4) treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, (5) HAVING THE APPEARANCE OF GODLINESS, BUT DENYING ITS POWER. Avoid such people." (2 Timothy 3:1-5 ESV)

Does that sound anything like many living in the world today? Paul's list reflects affections that are misdirected. The focus is more on self than it is on others or even on God. Though for some such might be the means of gain in this world, it will result in the greatest loss in the end; the loss of the soul.

We must understand that one can be good and not necessarily godly. However, for one to be genuinely godly would mean to be truly good. The difference has to do with the TRUE ESSENCE WITHIN that properly impacts the actions without. Goodness without God may provide some benefit to others in this life, but provides no promise for eternity.

Let us refrain from the form of the fake as we recognize GENUINE GODLINESS is produced where the life is properly connected to God and His Will. May GOD'S GOODNESS well up from within us as we seek to serve His purposes in this life.

Have a great day ALLOWING GOD'S GOOD ESSENCE TO WORK IN AND THROUGH US!

Distracted!

One of the greatest challenges in life is distractions. Think about a child who has just gotten a new toy and just can't wait to play with it. It doesn't matter what else is going on, that toy has their attention and even if the weather is not right for its use, they just have to go out right then and use it!

Even as we get older, when we get something new we just can't wait to get out and put it to use. Perhaps even if we don't have time, we will make time even if that means letting some other things go. Five days ago we made the purchase of something of a recreational nature we are eager to get out and use. However, the week's schedule has just not permitted it. Even Saturday was too full to work it in. There have been other things more important to do and therefore trying out this new thing will have to wait. We are not going to let it distract us from what really needs to be done. There are presently other PRIORITIES of which to take care.

When Jesus told the parable of the great banquet (found in Luke 14:16-24 and holding similar application to the parable of the wedding feast found in Matthew 22), when it was time for the guests to come, some offered excuses. We read. . .

"(18) But THEY ALL ALIKE BEGAN TO MAKE EXCUSES. The first said to him, 'I HAVE BOUGHT A FIELD, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.' (19) And another said, 'I HAVE BOUGHT FIVE YOKE OF OXEN, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.' (20) And another said, 'I HAVE MARRIED A WIFE, and therefore I cannot come.'" (Luke 14:18-20 ESV)

This parable related to accepting the invitation to come into the Lord's kingdom and each excuse represented a life distraction that got in the way. There was other stuff to do. There were other matters with which to deal. To even consider these excuses in a present day setting, would one buy property without first having checked it out? Would one buy a tractor or a vehicle without first seeing how it ran? Are there relationships that have been put first before the Lord and the kingdom of which we are to SEEK FIRST? (Matthew 6:33) Is there stuff we want to do before we turn our life completely over to Christ?

Matthew and Luke also recorded where some made excuses to Jesus for their not following Him immediately. (Matthew 8:18-22; Luke 9:57-62) They had OTHER THINGS TO DO FIRST. Did they ever follow? It may unfortunately be likely they did not! It is always risky to put the things of God on the back burner of life. Certainly there is nothing wrong with some leisure time for rest and recreation and this life does have its responsibilities. However, we must ALWAYS KEEP SUCH IN THEIR PLACE; not allowing ourselves to be distracted from taking care of what is of eternal significance. May our LIFE PRIORITIES reflect our genuine devotion to the Lord. Remember what He gave for us!

Have a great day KEEPING FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Time For Go And Tell!

When I was in grade school, "Show And Tell" time was always fun. It seemed less "schoolish" than everything else. It was a time to listen without worrying about being tested later on what was being shared. It was also the opportunity to share what was of personal interest to me with my classmates as well.

In the area of the Garasenes -- where Jesus healed a demon possessed man living among the tombs (see Mark 5:1-20 & Luke 8:26-39 for the full accounts) -- as Jesus was getting ready to leave we read. . .

"(17) And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region. (18) As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons BEGGED HIM THAT HE MIGHT BE WITH HIM. (19) And he did not permit him but said to him, 'GO home to your friends AND TELL them HOW MUCH THE LORD HAS DONE FOR YOU, and how he has HAD MERCY ON YOU.' (20) And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled." (Mark 5:17-20 ESV)

What an impact Jesus had had on his life! As some "begged" Jesus to leave the region, this man "begged" to go and BE WITH JESUS. His desire probably does not surprise us. However, though BEING WITH JESUS would have been a glorious thing, there was something else for him to do at this time. This man was instructed to GO AND TELL his friends how much the Lord had done for him, and that is exactly what he did.

As I considered this scene I also remembered Paul's desire to BE WITH THE LORD. It was a strong longing. It was a glorious thing to which he looked forward. Paul expressed this desire in his letter to the church at Philippi where we read. . .

"(21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I am hard pressed between the two. MY DESIRE IS TO depart and BE WITH CHRIST, for that is far better. (24) But TO REMAIN IN THE FLESH IS MORE NECESSARY ON YOUR ACCOUNT." (Philippians 1:21-24 ESV)

Yes, a strong desire. However Paul recognized that though it would be far better for himself personally to depart and BE WITH CHRIST, it was more necessary for the present to remain on behalf of the spiritual growth of the Christians at Philippi; for their spiritual "progress and joy in the faith." (Philippians 1:25)

Do we also share that same strong desire to go and BE WITH THE LORD? That is a good desire. To live with that anticipation can encourage us as we go through life's challenges. And that time for us will come. BEING WITH THE LORD will be more glorious and certainly much easier than some of what we have to deal with in this realm. However, though that would be better personally, it is more necessary for us to be telling others the good news of Jesus and of the difference He has made in our life as we go about living our daily lives. Let us therefore be presently involved in GOING and TELLING others HOW MUCH THE LORD HAS DONE FOR US! We have become the recipients of His great mercy, been brought into peace with God through the blood of Jesus Christ, have been forgiven, have been given eternal hope, and the list goes on. These are blessings God desires others around us to come to experience as well. May we wisely use the time we have been presently given for God's purposes and to His glory and praise.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING WHAT'S MORE NECESSARY NOW!

Look! (part 4 of 4)

Once again noting the text of the last three days. . .
"BEHOLD, HE IS COMING with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen." (Revelation 1:7 ESV)

And the New Living Translation which reads. . .
"LOOK! HE COMES with the clouds of heaven. And everyone will see him -- even those who pierced him. And all the nations of the earth will weep because of him. Yes! Amen!" [NLT © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

LOOK! Do we hear the excitement in those words? Can we sense the EAGER ANTICIPATION in those words? Can we see the joyful watchfulness in those words? What A GLORIOUS DAY our Lord's coming will be! Not a day to LOOK at with fear by us who believe and are ready! Nor a day yet to be convinced of since we believe what we have read and heard concerning our Lord's coming.

Peter encouraged. . .
"(11) Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, (12) WAITING FOR AND HASTENING THE COMING OF THE DAY OF GOD, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! (13) But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." (2 Peter 3:11-13 ESV)

A DAY TO ANTICIPATE as we live our lives now. A day to LOOK TOWARD as we keep on keeping on here. We ought to LOOK toward His coming as a day of fulfillment of all the hopes and promises based on our faith in Jesus. We EAGERLY ANTICIPATE the deliverance from the temporary to the eternal; the transformation from the perishable to the imperishable. (I Corinthians 15:42-44)

What will it all be like? I don't know. What will Jesus look like? I don't know that either. What will we be like? Whatever it all will be probably cannot be described adequately to our finite minds now. But one thing I know is. . .

"Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM, because we shall see him as he is." (1 John 3:2 ESV)

Oh, what a scene that day will be. Oh, what a sight to behold. And oh, what a glory we shall share in with our Lord in eternity. What a day to set our eyes toward.

Have a great day EAGERLY ANTICIPATING THAT GRAND HOPE IN CHRIST!

Look! (part 3 of 4)

As we have noted the past two days. .

LOOK! Do we SEE? It is a point regarding Christ not to be missed! Do we SEE the urgency in those words? Do we SEE the plea to be ready in that statement? After accepting the fact it will happen, the next step is to REMAIN PREPARED.
Though many people continue to try to predict the Lord's coming, Jesus Himself stated. . .
"(30) Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (31) And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. . . . (36) But CONCERNING THAT DAY AND HOUR NO ONE KNOWS, NOT EVEN THE ANGELS OF HEAVEN, NOR THE SON, BUT THE FATHER ONLY." (Matthew 24:30-31 & 36 ESV)
Not knowing when implies the need for always being ready for whenever that time may come. And come it will! Does that truth hold our attention?
Peter warned. . .
"(10) But THE DAY of the Lord WILL COME LIKE A THIEF, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. (11) SINCE ALL THESE THINGS ARE THUS TO BE DISSOLVED, WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE OUGHT YOU TO BE in lives of holiness and godliness, (12) waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!" (2 Peter 3:10-12 ESV)
In view of all this, what kind of people ought we to be? We ought to BE A PREPARED PEOPLE as Heaven has been called a "prepared place for a prepared people." We ought to BE A WATCHFUL PEOPLE since we don't know when that day will come. We ought also to be A PEOPLE WHO SHARE with others THE MESSAGE OF HOPE they need in order to, themselves, be prepared. To miss the point is to miss the OPPORTUNITY TO BE PREPARED.
Have a great day PREPARED FOR OUR POINT OF DEPARTURE!

Look! (part 2 of 4)

As we noted yesterday. .

Yes, LOOK! IT WILL HAPPEN! The point has not been made just once. Again and again Scriptures tell us Jesus WILL COME AGAIN. Though we may not know all the details (including the time; Matthew 24:36 and 25:13) concerning our Lord's coming, the idea of it is not just from one obscure passage.

Jesus mentioned it Himself as He encouraged His disciples prior to His arrest and death on the cross. Jesus told the disciples He was going to prepare a place for them and said,
". . . I WILL COME AGAIN and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also." (John 14:3 ESV)

The fact was also mentioned by angels at the time of Jesus' ascension into Heaven. As the disciples were standing, looking up at the clouds, they were told . . .
". . . 'Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, WILL COME IN THE SAME WAY as you saw him go into heaven.'" (Acts 1:11 ESV)

Not wanting others to be ignorant of the fact, Paul encouraged with these words:
"(13) But we DO NOT WANT YOU TO BE UNINFORMED, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. (14) For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. (15) For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. (16) For THE LORD HIMSELF WILL DESECEND FROM HEAVEN with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, AND SO WE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH THE LORD. (18) Therefore encourage one another with these words." (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 ESV)

And other passages proclaim the same thing -- IT WILL HAPPEN! BEHOLD! LOOK! See for yourself! Don't just take my word for it! See what the Scriptures say! If the Scriptures are accepted how can it be denied? Jesus promised it! The angels spoke of it! The Apostles referred to it! All are in agreement! It will take place! Believe it! And be encouraged in the anticipation of it!

Have a great day ACCEPTING GOD'S GREAT FACTS!

Look! (part 1 of 4)

Some words just seem to be suited for emphasis all by themselves. There are single words that when uttered with varying voice inflections can convey a compelling message. The word "LOOK" is one of those words.

Someone could say, "LOOK!" and we would. We would turn and LOOK at what they wanted us to see. In effect this would be saying, "LOOK at that!" This would most likely be expressed with some excitement.

Someone -- with finger wagging in our face -- might say, "LOOK!" and we would know they had a point we were not to miss. This would be conveying the idea of "LOOK here now!" and might be expressed with great firmness.

Someone might hand us a book, an article, or a journal and encourage us with the word, "LOOK!" The idea in mind here would be "LOOK for yourself and you will see the truth on the matter!" or simply, "Check it out!" This too could be expressed with firmness and perhaps a bit of exasperation as well.

Each of these three ways reveals that "LOOK" is a word used with the intent of getting another's attention!

In Revelation we read. . .
"BEHOLD, HE IS COMING with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen." (Revelation 1:7 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"LOOK! HE COMES with the clouds of heaven. And everyone will see him -- even those who pierced him. And all the nations of the earth will weep because of him. Yes! Amen!" [NLT © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]

I believe this was meant to be an attention getting verse. However, consider the various impacts this verse can have depending on where one is in relation to God's eternal promises in Christ. I think we could illustrate this by viewing the word "BEHOLD" or "LOOK" in the three ways I have described above. Does this verse get our attention? Does this verse motivate us? Does this verse frighten us? Does this verse excite us? Over the next three days (Lord willing) we will focus on each of these three aspects.

Have a great day LOOKING TO BEHOLD AS WE OUGHT!

The Boat!

It is said that someone "missed the boat" when they missed an opportunity. When it is said that "we are all in the same boat" it means that everyone is in the same set of circumstances as someone else. To say "don't rock the boat" means to not cause problems for those around us. Then there is the expression, "sink or swim, sailor" which is indicative of a situation in which there are only two choices with an end of either success or failure depending on whether one chooses to continue or give up.

After Jesus had fed the five thousand, He sent the disciples out in a boat while He dismissed the crowds. (Matthew 14:22) When the boat was a long way from land the disciples were "all in the same boat" being tossed by the waves from a strong wind. (vs.24) When they saw the figure of Jesus walking on the water, they were again "in the same boat", fearing they were seeing a ghost. (vs.26) Being reassured by the Lord that it was He and to not be afraid (vs.27), Peter -- who would have had a healthy respect for stormy seas, having been a fisherman by trade -- stated his desire to be where His Lord was; out on the water.

We read. . .
"(28) And Peter answered him, 'Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.' (29) He said, 'Come.' So PETER GOT OUT OF THE BOAT AND WALKED ON THE WATER and came to Jesus." (Matthew 14:28-29 ESV)

While the rest remained "all in the same boat", Peter had the courage to step out onto the water and walk toward Jesus. Would we not say that was an ACT OF FAITH? The text tells us Peter was actually doing it. And in order to walk on the water one must get out of the boat! Are we WALKING BY FAITH in order to remain near the Lord or are we choosing to remain where we are more comfortable? Are we willing to BE WITH JESUS even when it means stepping outside our own comfort zone as we choose to let Him work out His purposes in and through our lives?

As the text goes on to tell us, Peter's attention turned from Jesus to what the wind was doing around him and he began to sink. (vs.30) When it came to Peter's initial FAITH, the wind was "rocking the boat" of his courage. Was it "sink or swim" time for Peter? I think it is worthy to note that Peter did not choose to swim back to the boat. Nor did he call out for a life-ring or rope to be thrown to him by those who remained in the boat. Rather, Peter REFOCUSED ON THE LORD and "cried out, 'LORD, SAVE ME.'" (vs.30) The Lord did reach out His hand, took hold of Peter, chastised him for doubting, and once they were all back "in the same boat" the water calmed and Jesus' power had their attention. (vss.31-33)

When it comes to varying circumstances of life, the thing that will make the difference whether we find ourselves having "missed the boat", view life as "all in the same boat", someone seems to be "rocking the boat", or we are getting that "sinking" feeling, let us KEEP THE FOCUS TOWARD JESUS! When it seems we have but two choices, let us FOCUS ON JESUS -- not giving up, but continuing in Him -- recognizing we are all "in the same boat" of need Him in order TO BE SAVED! With our EYES OF FAITH RESTING ON HIM we too -- like the disciples -- may be amazed at His power to calm the storm (the one within us) as WITH HIM we WALK IN FAITH where we might never have otherwise imagined. In the example of Peter, may we always sincerely desire to be drawn closer to the Lord.

Have a great day NOT "MISSING THE BOAT" REGARDING A FIXED FAITH IN JESUS!

Intercession!

Rather than in faith following God into the promised land, the people rebelled and grumbled against Moses. (Numbers 14:2) Their eyes and desire focused back toward Egypt and the nation was ready to choose a new leader to lead them back there. (Numbers 14:4) God stated His readiness to strike the people with a pestilence, disinherit them as His people, and make Moses into a nation even greater and mightier than these. (Numbers 14:11-12) Had Moses had enough of their complaining? What a relief it would have been to have had that burden lifted from him. However, once again the humble and meek character of Moses shown forth as he interceded on behalf of the people.

Reading through Numbers 14:13-19, Moses' intercession was not based on what the people deserved. The basis of Moses' pleading was the glory and reputation of God, as well as God's merciful character. Though there were consequences suffered for not having trusted God's ability to give them the land, God did pardon the people and declare that His glory would fill the earth. (Numbers 14:20-23)

In reading this again, I was struck by the thought: where would Israel have been without the intercession of Moses? Other than for Caleb and Joshua (Numbers 14:30), would that have been it for them right then and there? And how about for us? Where would we be without the intercession of JESUS ON OUR BEHALF? Has God not also been merciful and patient toward us?

In Paul's letter to the church at Rome, he encouraged. . .
"(31) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (33) Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. (34) Who is to condemn? CHRIST JESUS is the one who died -- more than that, who was raised -- who is AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD, who indeed IS INTERCEDING FOR US." (Romans 8:31-34 ESV)

JESUS CHRIST -- our great and eternal High Priest -- unlike those under the old law always lives to intercede for us, and is therefore able to save completely! (Hebrews 7:23-25) Praise God for that merciful provision IN CHRIST. May we not take that blessing for granted as we continue to follow on in faith toward the eternal hope He came to provide and the eternal dwelling He has gone to prepare.

Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR OUR ETERNAL HOPE IN CHRIST!

The Vote That Counts!

Ranging from candidates, various issues, laws, and levies all the way down to where to eat out or take a family vacation are sometimes decided by popular vote. Choices are viewed, votes are cast, and the majority rules. However, does that always mean the choice is best or even right?

When twelve spies were sent into the land of Canaan, what was the result? That the land God said He would give them was a good land was acknowledged by them all. (Numbers 13:27) However, the people in the land were feared. (Numbers 13:28 & 32-33) Therefore, ten spies discouraged the people while two (Caleb and Joshua) tried to encourage the people to accept what God said He would give. (Numbers 13:30; 14:8-9) The vote was 10 to 2 and the people cried out wishing they were back in Egypt. Not only did the people refuse to listen to Caleb and Joshua, but they cried out against Moses and Aaron as well and were ready to choose a new leader. (Numbers 14:1-4) The people could not be persuaded by the minority vote.

As Caleb and Joshua tried to redirect the FOCUS TO GOD we read. . .
"(8) 'If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. (9) Only DO NOT REBEL AGAINST THE LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD IS WITH US; do not fear them.' (10) Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel." (Numbers 14:8-10 ESV)

The majority vote was against those who were willing to STAND WITH GOD! The consequence of their lack of trust in God to receive what He said He would give was forty more years of wandering in the wilderness until that generation was laid to rest. (Numbers 14:32-34 ESV) In spite of all the signs God had shown among them (Numbers 14:11) they in effect cast their vote against receiving His blessing.

Have we failed to accept what God desires to give? Where is our trust? To whom are we listening? Life needs to be about LOOKING TO GOD, not based on popular vote? There are issues of life -- especially that which relates to God's standard of morality and things of eternal consequence -- too important to leave to popular vote or even committee. Someone has said, "God so loved the world He did not send a committee. He sent His Son." Aren't you glad?

When it comes to life, let us remember Jesus' exhortation to. . .
"(13) Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is WIDE and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are MANY. (14) For the gate is NARROW and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are FEW." (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)

What does that tell us about majority rule? What does that reveal regarding the life choice of the many compared to the few? I am going to cast my vote with God because I want His vote with me? How about you? Let us remember ". . . If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31 ESV) With the TRUST IN HIM the promised land is ours!

Have a great day KNOWING THE RIGHT VOTE IS ALWAYS WITH GOD!

Under New Management!

"Under New Management!" When we see a sign advertising such posted on a restaurant, a store, or some other business, we assume a change has taken place. Perhaps the service will be better than it was before. Maybe prices will be more reasonable or products sold will be of a better quality than was found under the previous management. What are the changes? Will there be any changes? Or did they just remodel -- giving it a new exterior look -- and put up a new sign?

How often have people come to Christ and begun the Christian journey with little change to the manner in which they live? Is there not the realization that the life has literally been brought "Under New Management"? Remember what Paul's life was like (as Saul) when he was under the management of a Pharisaic mindset. In his self-righteousness he pursued a life of law, rejected Christ, and persecuted the church. However, when he saw the light on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3), his life was soon brought "Under New Management"; the management of Christ. Perhaps the acknowledgement of that change was no better declared than by what Paul stated in his letter to the church at Galatia.

We read. . .
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is NO LONGER I WHO LIVE. BUT CHRIST WHO LIVES IN ME. And the life I NOW LIVE in the flesh I live BY FAITH IN THE SON OF GOD, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

Paul's life under the management of Christ's ownership meant he no longer lived according to his own aims and interests, but rather those of Christ. We too -- having come to Christ -- are to remember we are not our own, but were bought with a price. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) Perhaps some around us are waiting to see if any changes will be made. May we conduct ourselves in all of life's day-to-day activities in a manner that clearly reflects our joyful blessing of living under the Sovereign Lordship of Christ.

Have a great day ADVERTISING THE BLESSEDNESS OF LIVING UNDER CHRIST!

To Know Him Is To . . . !

When Paul was walking around in Athens, there was a sight which greatly distressed him (Acts 17:16). He saw the city was full of idols! After beginning to reason with the people of Athens, he was soon given the opportunity to speak to a meeting of the Areopagus where time was generally spent talking about and listening to the latest ideas of the day. (Acts 17:19-21)

Note what Paul said as he began to address this group.
"(22) So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: 'Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. (23) For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, 'TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.'" (Acts 7:22-23 ESV)

How could one worship what they did not know? How would one know how to please that deity? How would one know what type of worship to offer? How would one make any requests of that deity if it were not known what that deity could provide? How could one put their faith in one who is unknown?

Paul went on to proclaim the only true God; the Creator and the sustainer of life; the One who desires to be known. We might say, "To know Him is to love Him", but our life should also proclaim "TO KNOW HIM IS TO WORSHIP HIM!" That is one way in which we show our love and adoration for all He has done, is doing, and will do. God has revealed Himself through His Creation, through His Son Jesus Christ, and through His Word. And TO KNOW HIM IS TO WORSHIP HIM!

To know Him in His holiness is to worship Him!
To know Him in His power is to worship Him!
To know Him in His loving provision is to worship Him!
To know Him in His wisdom is to worship Him!
To know Him in His gracious spirit is to worship Him!
To know Him Who is true to His every word is to worship Him!

To truly know Him is to make it clear we acknowledge His WORTH-SHIP! To know Him is to make it evident how much He and His Will are valued in our lives! To know Him as the provider of all things is to entrust our whole being to Him!

Do we know Him Whom we claim to worship? What does the worship of our lives say about the relationship? For us to really know Him and what He means to our life both for now and eternity should prompt nothing less than true worship from us. Our worship reveals that we do know Him. And our worship is a worship of faith!

Have a great day WORSHIPPING BECAUSE YOU TRULY DO KNOW HIM!

Understanding Purpose!

We used to have a couple apple trees in our back yard. One of them got run over by a wagon when our children were growing up and it did not survive. The other one produced a few apples from time to time, but it seemed no matter how much I trimmed it or sprayed it for insects, it just did not produce. The tree was apparently not healthy enough to produce good fruit. A few years ago I made the decision to cut it down and a friend made use of the wood for his wood stove.

In our front yard we have two fruit trees: a dwarf pear and a dwarf cherry. This past year we enjoyed tasty fruit from both of them. In fact, it was a great year for the cherries and so my wife canned some to be used in pies and cobblers and made a good amount of jelly as well.

With the fruit trees we have had and do have, there has been the EXPECTATION OF FRUIT. That is why we bought them. We have other trees in the yard that provide some shade, but that was not the purpose in planting the fruit trees.

Jesus stated. . .
"(17) So, every HEALTHY TREE BEARS GOOD FRUIT, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. (18) A HEALTHY TREE cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear GOOD FRUIT. (19) Every tree that does not bear GOOD FRUIT is cut down and thrown into the fire." (Matthew 7:17-19 ESV)

The context in which Jesus spoke here related to recognizing false prophets or teachers. By their fruit they would be known. Like the quality of fruit is relative to the health of the tree, so it is with people. If our spiritual health is not what it ought to be, how can GOOD FRUIT be expected? It is the good tree that bears GOOD FRUIT and the life properly connected to God is the life that will also bear GOOD FRUIT. (Note Jesus' analogy in John 15:1-6 as well.) May we remain well rooted in the truth of God so that we are able to continue bearing GOOD FRUIT as is the expectation in our relationship with Him.

Have a great day BEING PRODUCTIVE FOR THE LORD!

Worthy Relationship!

I am not worthy of the salvation I have received in Christ, because my sins were the reason Jesus went to the cross. I do not deserve the blessings God has provided, but by His grace I am blessed both physically and spiritually. However, Jesus demonstrated my life (and yours) was worth saving and so He willingly gave Himself up for us that through the shedding of His blood our sins could be adequately atoned for and the justice of God fulfilled with regard to sin. The thing that would leave me in a position of unworthiness is when Jesus does not have His rightful place in connection with my life.

Jesus stated. . .
"(37) Whoever LOVES FATHER OR MOTHER MORE THAN ME is NOT WORTHY of me, and whoever LOVES SON OR DAUGHTER MORE THAN ME is NOT WORTHY of me. (38) And whoever does NOT TAKE HIS CROSS AND FOLLOW ME is NOT WORTHY of me. (39) Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." (Matthew 10:37-39 ESV)

It is not that father and mother and son or daughter or even our own life is not to be loved. We are commanded to love others and to love our neighbor as our self (which implies a love for self). The thing to bear in mind is that for us to worthy of Jesus, we must LOVE HIM MOST OF ALL! He is to receive the supreme focus of our life! We must even be willing to endure as we surrender to follow Him rather than shrinking back and doing our own thing.

JESUS IS MOST WORTHY of our praise and adoration for the salvation He has provided. Our own worthiness is found in maintaining a proper relationship with Him as the Sovereign over every aspect of our life. In LOVING HIM ABOVE ALL we will seek to please Him, serve His purposes, and in our quest to become more like Him we will treat all our other relationships appropriately as well. By Jesus remaining the number one focus of our life, we will be demonstrating our greatest appreciation for the interest He has shown in us.

Have a great day GIVING CHRIST THE WORTH-SHIP RIGHTFULLY HIS!

Life Perspective!

We live in a Victorian seaport community where the biggest industry is tourism. Though we have been residents of this community for going on twenty-six years, my wife and I still enjoy playing tourist from time to time; going in and out of the shops and looking out over the water. As my wife and I sat eating lunch yesterday in one of our favorite restaurants by the bay, we discussed some of the differences between viewing life from the standpoint of being a TOURIST, a RESIDENT, or a SOJOURNER.

A TOURIST may be one who is on vacation, simply leisurely enjoying the sights. No schedule. No "to do" lists. Just doing what they want when they want to do it.

A RESIDENT would be one who lives there and may take for granted some of the things that delight the visitors. They may feel very settled in and at home where they are.

A SOJOURNER is far from settled. Their life is continually moving along and though events and sights along the way may be enjoyable, life is not viewed as a vacation. Nor is there a sense of being at home. For the sojourner there is a destination being traveled toward.

So, as we go about living our daily lives, are we sight-seeing, settled, or sojourning? The Hebrew writer noted those living by faith in the following way.
"(13) These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY WERE STRANGERS AND EXILES ON THE EARTH. (14) For people who speak thus make it clear that they are SEEKING A HOMELAND. (15) If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. (16) But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city." (Hebrews 11:13-16 ESV)

The Greek word translated "exiles" in verse 13 is "parepidemos", which is "an adjective signifying 'sojourning in a strange place, away from one's own people'". This word is "used metaphorically of those to whom Heaven is their own country, and who are sojourners on earth." [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] In verse 15, the Greek translated "homeland" is "patris" which refers to the place of one's "fathers" or "fatherland". It is the realm of our Heavenly Father we ought to keep in mind as our true homeland and the destiny to which we continue to journey. May our SOJOURN continue as we fulfill the purposes of God for this life.

Have a great day KEEPING OUR HEAVENLY DESTINY IN VIEW!

Enough Faith!

Jesus spoke of faith as small as a grain of mustard seed providing the ability to move mountains. (Matthew 17:20) That is an indication there is a lot of power even in a little faith. He also complimented the faith of a centurion who believed Jesus could heal his servant even from a distance. (Matthew 8:10) Many came to Jesus with the HOPE OF BEING HEALED, believing He was able to do it. (i.e. Matthew 9:20-22)

On one occasion we read. . .
"(1) And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. (2) And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when JESUS SAW THEIR FAITH, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN.'" (Matthew 9:1-2 ESV)

Jesus saw that those carrying the paralytic had faith. Faith for what? What did Jesus do? JESUS FORGAVE THE PARALYTIC'S SINS. What was the paralytic's expectation? I don't read of him or his friends saying, "Wait, wait. That is not what we came for. It was not for forgiveness, but for healing." Do you read it there? The text does not even suggest it. Being criticized by the scribes for thinking He had the authority to FORGIVE SINS, Jesus asked what was easier, to say "Your SINS ARE FORGIVEN" or to say "Rise and walk"? (Matthew 9:5). Therefore, to demonstrate He did have authority to FORGIVE SINS, Jesus told the paralytic to get up, take up his bed and go home. The paralytic did just that and the people glorified God.

As I follow the order of our Lord's actions on this occasion, I am struck by what is my greatest need? Is it the healing of my body or the HEALING OF MY SOUL? I can live this life with an infirmity, but where am I without FORGIVENESS? So, when it comes to my faith, do I have enough to accept the FORGIVENESS the Lord has provided? Do I have enough faith to be filled with the joy, peace, and lack of regret (note 2 Corinthians 7:10) the SPIRITUAL HEALING His FORGIVENESS of my sins adequately provides?

Bigger than the mountains is sometimes the obstacle of accepting the truth we can be FORGIVEN. Jesus' blood is powerful enough to deal with our sins as we remain walking with Him. (1 John 1:7) "Take heart . . . YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN." In Christ, let us believe it!

Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE JOY OF HIS HEALING WITHIN!

Hosting!

What happens when people make A VISIT. There are some visitors who overstay their welcome while others are made to feel very much at home no matter how long they stay. Some visitors bring a blessing to their host and may also leave a blessing behind when they leave. There are also times when someone will be angry with another and say, "I'm going to go pay them A VISIT and give them a piece of my mind." In such a case the host may be very reluctant to open the door.

When it was time for God to bless Abraham and Sarah with the child He had promised, we read. . .
"(1) THE LORD VISITED SARAH as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. (2) AND SARAH CONCEIVED AND BORE ABRAHAM A SON in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him." (Genesis 21:1-2 ESV)

All of what God had said He would do, He brought about. When it was the time, God fulfilled His promise. Here the plan was coming to fruition of the promise that through Abraham's seed, all nations of the earth would be blessed. (Genesis 22:18)

GOD'S VISIT was an amazing thing. It brought blessing to Abraham and Sarah and also to us in Jesus being the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise. (Galatians 3:16) When God pays A VISIT, things happen and His power is to be noted. However, when lives are not being lived in accordance with God's Will, that visitation can be in the form of punishment. (i.e. Exodus 32:33-34 )

What kind of host are we to God? Jesus noted God's desire in connection with our lives as follows:
"(23) Jesus answered him, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and WE WILL COME TO HIM AND MAKE OUR HOME WITH HIM.'" (John 14:23 ESV)

It is not merely A VISIT God desires, but rather an ongoing relationship with us. Are we living such that the Lord can feel at home in our life? Are we comfortable abiding in His presence? Do we desire His remaining with us, or would we rather He left and went home! If He is cramping our style, we need to take another look at the manner in which we are living. Though we find ourselves having to remove from our lives things not appropriate for His dwelling with us, may we always recognize the greatest blessing having Him constantly in our life provides.

Have a great day BEING A SUITABLE HABITATION FOR THE LORD!

Life Consistency!

One can tell a lie; speaking that which is not true. One can also live a lie; appearing different than what their true character actually is. Perhaps we could say to do both would be consistent and therefore one would know what to expect from such a life. However, that is not the consistency we want in life. As we tell the truth (Ephesians 4:15 & 25) we also need to LIVE THE TRUTH. Otherwise, how could we expect people to accept what we say if our life says something different. As Christians, how believable are we?

As John wrote to Gaius, he noted his spiritual health in this way:
"(2) Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be IN GOOD HEALTH, AS IT GOES WELL WITH YOUR SOUL. (3) For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and TESTIFIED TO YOUR TRUTH, as indeed you are WALKING IN THE TRUTH. (4) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are WALKING IN THE TRUTH." (3 John 2-4 ESV)

Others had testified that the truth was in Gaius; that he was faithful to the truth. And it was in accord with the truth that Gaius LIVED HIS LIFE. When the TRUTH IS ALIVE within us it should be revealed in both our actions and our words. By so doing we have the potential of making believers of those around us.

Have a great day BEING A BELIEVABLE BELIEVER!

Whine And Dine?

When someone attempts to impress another or soften them up in order to gain a favor, it is sometimes said they will "wine and dine" them. However, there was a time during Israel's journey toward the promised land that we might appropriately note as "whine and dine"!

Though the nation should have been more impressed with God's continual provision for them, they appeared hard to satisfy. Their journeying from Egypt to Sinai and then from Sinai on was sprinkled with complaining, fussing, murmuring, whining, and even wishing they were back in Egypt; almost like a child that refuses to be made happy by anything!

Apparently tired of the manna God had provided for them, they would not be satisfied until they got meat. We read. . .

"(4) Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, 'OH THAT WE HAD MEAT TO EAT! (5) We remember the fish we ate in Egypt that cost nothing, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. (6) But now our strength is dried up, and THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL BUT THIS MANNA TO LOOK AT.'" (Numbers 11:4-6 ESV)

They whined, weeping at the door of their tents. (vs.10) And after they whined they would dine on God's provision of quail until it came out of their noses and they loathed it. (vs.20) This would be the result of their rejection of the Lord and longing for Egypt instead. (vs.21) When God provided the quail in the camp, the least gathered was "ten homers" (vs.32) [a homer being about 60 bushels or 220 liters] which would have been a lot of meat. It is as if they began to gorge themselves on it in their greed, for we read that while the meat was still between their teeth, God's anger was kindled and He brought a great plague upon them. (vs.33)

Do we ever struggle with a lack of APPRECIATION for the blessings of God. In discontentment, are we always longing for more? We have adequate provision, but cry for something else? We have sufficient means to live, but whine about wanting more and more? And when we get more, do we greedily dig in, neglecting to be APPRECIATIVE to God for His blessings? Though there is nothing wrong with being very well off -- as such can provide the ability to greatly bless others -- we must guard against the attitudes of discontentment, greed, and lack of appreciation for what God has provided.

In Paul's first letter to Timothy he wrote. . .
"(6) Now there is GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT, (7) for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. (8) But if we have FOOD AND CLOTHING, WITH THESE WE WILL BE CONTENT." (1 Timothy 6:6-8 ESV)

If we LEARN CONTENTMENT, we are less likely to take God's blessings for granted. We will also better handle those blessings. May we replace any tendency to whine with genuine thanks to God for all He has graciously provided for both our physical and spiritual nourishment.

Have a great day GENUINELY GRATEFUL FOR GOD'S GRACIOUS GIFTS!

To Be Man's Best Friend!

Man's best friend! Who is it? Usually it is a dog mentioned as being man's best friend. But why? What is it about a dog that may have given rise to such a compliment? Is it the loyalty in companionship? Is it the acceptance? Is it the eager joy in which they greet their master? For a good number of years we had a dog named Princess who would greet us with her tail wagging quickly back and forth to such a point it almost seemed she would break her tail as it hit against walls, door jams, table legs, chairs, etc. Then, when we would just say her name, that tail picked up momentum. We had to be careful where she was because that tail could easily knock something off a shelf. What a girl! What a tail! But, hey! Maybe that's it right there! Maybe that's the thing that has branded the dog as man's best friend! Maybe it's the fact that our dog wagged her tail instead of her tongue!

Isn't that a picture of a good friend; one who will lift your spirits with the joy of spending time with you rather than tearing you down with their words?

Solomon wrote:
"There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but THE TONGUE OF THE WISE BRINGS HEALING." (Proverbs 12:18 ESV)

What is pictured in our lives? God created dogs with a pretty good intelligence. How are we doing? May we be the kind of friend we desire to have as we offer words that promote healing.

Have a great day taking a lesson from "MAN'S BEST FRIEND"!

A Focal Point!

When John began his ministry of preparing the way for the Lord, the focal point of his message was. . .

"REPENT, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 3:2 ESV)

There was the need for a change of heart and a change of focus in order to be receptive to the kingdom of Christ. Old understandings and life activities needed to be set aside for the new life associated with Jesus becoming the king on the throne of their lives. REPENTANCE was a necessity! (note Matthew 3:7-8-10)

When Jesus began His public ministry, a focal point of His message was as follows:

"From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, 'REPENT, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.'" (Matthew 4:17 ESV)

The same need; that of turning from the old life and embracing the new abundant life Jesus came to provide. Those who felt no need for REPENTANCE refused to accept Jesus as the Messiah sent by God to redeem His people. And like John, Jesus taught the need to REPENT or otherwise perish. (Luke 13:3 & 5)

Following our Lord's ascension back to Heaven, when the Apostles began their preaching and teaching and the church was to begin, a focal point of Peter's message was. . .

"And Peter said to them, 'REPENT and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'" (Acts 2:38 ESV)

We then read that Peter exhorted the crowd on the day of Pentecost with many other words, warning them to save themselves from the corrupt generation of which they were a part. (Acts 2:40) There we about three thousand souls who accepted the warning and so REPENTED and were baptized that day. (Acts 2:41)

REPENTANCE is still the need today! This needed change is not with God! Nor is it with the message; the Gospel of Jesus. The need for change and turning the life in the right direction is always with us! REPENTANCE is still that for which God is looking. Each day that comes is sign of God's gracious patience and another opportunity for REPENTING to occur. (2 Peter 3:9) May we each continue to keep our lives turned toward God and His Sovereign Will, for though no one knows the day nor the hour (Matthew 24:36), the coming of our Lord may be close at hand.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A RESPONSIVE HEART TO GOD'S SOVEREIGN WILL!

Life Companion!

As I have done each year for quite a number of years now, with this new year I have once again begun reading through the entire Bible. (It is not too late for you also to being by reading three to four chapters from the Old Testament and one in the New Testament at least six days a week to be able to read through the entire Bible in one year.) My effort again this year is to read as if I had never read it before. Approaching GOD'S WORD with the attitude "Oh, I have read this before" is close to the feeling I really don't need to read it because I already know it. However, when I read with fresh eyes I am often amazed at what concepts I had missed during other readings. Sometimes it is because of what I am presently experiencing that causes some principles from GOD'S WORD to be more vivid and practical this time around. Other times my understanding of other portions of Scripture brings what is presently being read into a clearer light. Then as I read, I am praying for God's wisdom to guide my in applying those truths in the actions of the day.

As Solomon encouraged his son toward the accepting of the wisdom of the words God has preserved for us to read even today, he stated. . .

"WHEN YOU WALK, they will lead you; when you LIE DOWN, they will watch over you; and when you AWAKE, they will talk with you." (Proverbs 6:22 ESV)

Solomon then went on to address some warnings applicable to righteous living that the daily guidance of GOD'S WORD can provide. Remaining open to and continuing to meditate on what we read from GOD'S WORD allows it to always be with us TO LEAD, bring the SWEET REST that comes from trusting God and living in a right relationship with Him, and when we awake to each new day they will remain that STILL SMALL VOICE as we step out into the day God has provided.

Let us allow GOD'S WORD to truly be our "life companion" day and night. May it be our constant guide in our homes and may we also not leave home without it. Whenever we need wisdom for living GOD'S WORD is always the best source from which to draw to bring godly consistency to life.

Have a great day ACCOMPANIED BY THE TRUTH!

Days Of Our Lives!

Yesterday, reading through the ten generations from Adam to Noah (Genesis 5), I was once again struck by the thing common to mankind. Each one listed was born, lived, and then died. Life in this realm being only temporary is something we share in common with them. However, the life spans of seven of these-- Adam (5:5), Seth (5:8), Enosh (5:11), Kenan (5:14), Jared (5:20), Methuselah (5:27), and Noah (5:32; 9:29) -- were over 900 years, with Methuselah being the oldest at 969 years old. Mahalalel lived only 895 (5:17) and Lamech lived even less at 777 years (5:31). Other than Noah who found favor in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6:8) because he was a righteous man while the world around him lived in wickedness, the only other specifically noted for his righteous life was Enoch.

This is what we know about Enoch.
"(21) When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. (22) Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. (23) Thus all THE DAYS OF ENOCH WERE 365 YEARS. (24) ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD, AND HE WAS NOT, FOR GOD TOOK HIM." (Genesis 5:21-24 ESV)

What a wonderful commentary on a life; to have spent it WALKING WITH GOD. However, it is interesting to note that this one who only lived a little over one third of the life span of the others was not listed as having died, but rather having been taken by God. The writer of Hebrews tells us the same thing. (Hebrews 11:5) Rather than being blessed with long life for his righteousness, he was taken from this life. Eventually we read that due to the wickedness of mankind, God was going to begin to shorten mankind's life span. (Genesis 6:3) When we read through the ten generations from Noah to Abraham, we see that life span beginning to shrink lower and lower. (Genesis 11:10-32) For some, having more time is more time to get into trouble and forget God.

Even today we sometimes feel the righteous are taken from us too soon. It is true that some lives are cut too short due to many varying circumstances. Though we don't always know the mind of God, could it be that sometimes His blessing is for them to be spared the sight and impact of the continued wickedness going on in this realm? Could it be that they are numbered among those "of whom the world was not worthy"? (Hebrews 11:38) Can we find some comfort in that possibility?

God does not take people from this life because He needs them. To be forever with Him is our blessing. Since we know we share that commonness of being born, living, and then dying, may our resolve be focused on WALKING WITH GOD for however many our days might be.

Have a great day KNOWING WHERE OUR WALK WITH GOD ULTIMATELY LEADS!
Carl

Dawning Of The New!

We speak of the "dawning" of CREATION when we refer to the grand beginning God brought about of which we read in the first chapter of Genesis. God spoke and life came into existence. It was the "dawning" of NEW LIFE. We also speak of the "dawning" of a NEW YEAR as well as the "dawning" of a NEW DAY as the sun rises in the morning.

Prior to Moses' death he blessed the people of Israel. As that blessing began, we read. . .

"He said, 'The LORD came from Sinai and DAWNED from Sier upon us; HE SHONE forth from Mount Paran; HE CAME from the ten thousands of holy ones, with flaming fire at his right hand.'" (Deuteronomy 33:2 ESV)

At Sinai was the "dawning" of a special covenant relationship between God and His people as He revealed the commands they were to follow. It was to "dawn" on them how blessed their lives would be as they continued to live faithful to that relationship with God. The light of God's truth was to RISE AND SHINE over their lives. With God there is light and that light has the power to dispel the darkness of ignorance and evil.

When Jesus rose from the dead, there was the "dawning" of HOPE for life beyond death. Yes, the "Son" has risen! And Jesus as "the TRUTH" (John 14:6) is to RISE AND SHINE over and in our lives. In Christ we are sharers in the special covenant relationship that goes back beyond Sinai to Abraham. (Genesis 17: 4; 22:18) As we have begun this NEW YEAR, with the "dawning" of each NEW DAY, may the darkness around us be dispelled as the light of Christ reflects in our daily actions. In this way it may begin to "dawn" on others that the truth of Jesus needs to be embraced by them as well.

Have a great day LETTING THE LORD'S LIGHT SHINE!

New Year Blessing!

Often, with the beginning of a new year, there is wondering with regard to such as, "What blessings will come with this new year?" or "How will the Lord bless me this year?" This contemplation may encompass a variety of areas of our life. Will I be blessed with good health? Will I be blessed with good fortune? Will I be blessed with greater victory over personal challenges? Will I be blessed with good grades, a good job, a promotion, etc.

Each year and day we are provided is a blessing from God. With regard to time someone has said, "Time wasted is existence; used, is life." [original source unknown] How we use the time God brings can BE A BLESSING to others and ultimately to God as we serve His purposes in this life. Are we prayerfully considering what it is we are going to do for the Lord this year? How can our life BE A BLESSING to others and to God as we seek to do His Will? Are we not most blessed as we allow God to use us for His Divine purposes?

James exhorted. . .
"(22) But BE DOERS OF THE WORD, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. (24) For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (25) But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but A DOER WHO ACTS, HE WILL BE BLESSED IN HIS DOING." (James 1:22-25 ESV)

As we daily study God's Word, let us do so with the resolve to put it into practice in our daily lives. Rather than merely existing or surviving, may we thrive in BEING A BLESSING as we go about our day to day activities. As we seek above all else to carry out the Will of God on a daily basis, we will ultimately be blessed in the doing.

Have a great day BEING A BLESSING OF GOD!
