Adornment Change!

Perhaps we have each had the experience when we dressed for dealing with a dirty task, maybe one we really didn't enjoy having to do. Maybe we did a bit of moping over our misery as we completed the task. Then someone came along and told us there was a party or a get together of some kind and we immediately cheered up and dressed up. Taking off the "grungies" we put on garments a bit more dressy or festive.

There are also life experiences when it is not the clothing that is changed, but our OUTWARD ESSENCE. Having our focus redirected to what is of greatest assurance or significance, we might immediately shift from an expression of gloom to that of great joy.

Toward the end of one of David's psalms -- after offering remembrance of God's deliverance and help -- he wrote of such a "garment" change as he stated. . .

"(11) You have TURNED for me my MOURNING INTO DANCING; you have LOOSED MY SACKCLOTH and CLOTHED ME WITH GLADNESS, (12) that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever!" (Psalm 30:11-12 ESV)

What a contrasting shift! From "mourning" to dancing". From sadness to exuberance. Dropping the "sackcloth" of sadness and putting on an aura of "gladness". Such a CHANGE OF DISPOSITION that his singing would not be silenced and his thanks would be directed toward God forever!

May we also remember what the Lord has done for us. Though this life has many challenges that can bring our spirits down, let us focus on the assurances that are ours for an eternity! Such remembrance can serve powerfully to keep our spirits up. May a bright OUTWARD ESSENCE adorn us as we keep our focus fixed on God and the assured hope of an eternity with Him. Drawing our attitudes from His wardrobe, our life disposition just might attract others to want to go along with us.

Have a great day CHEERED UP BY GOD!

A Fill Joy!

[11/29/2009 "teEn-MAIL"]

A FILL JOY!

When teens are told they cannot do something, at times the response has been, "You don't let me have any fun." Rules are often seen as unwanted limitations and a rule setter may be viewed as a "kill joy". However, being allowed to do whatever we feel like doing, does that always bring joy? Is it not true that lack of joy is sometimes the very result of our own wrong choices? Though we may not always know the "why's" regarding things urged away from, in spite of the limited wisdom of good parents they do have their children's best interests at heart. How much more so is this true of our Heavenly Father. His Way is always the best way and the path to GENUINE JOY!

In Paul's letter to the church at Rome he noted. . .
"(20) For when you were SLAVES OF SIN, you were free in regard to righteousness. (21) But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For THE END OF THOSE THINGS IS DEATH. (22) But now that you have been set FREE FROM SIN and have BECOME SLAVES OF GOD, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. (23) For the WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:20-23 ESV)

Some are enslaved by sin and don't even know it or are unwilling to acknowledge it! And that slavery eats away at joy as the life is gradually dying away. How does sin kill? Sin separates us from God. Sin also destroys the life God desires us to experience. It brings bondage. It sets us up for a lack of peace. It can take away the spirit for living. It destroys the room for the GENUINE and LASTING JOY a life connected with God is destined to provide!

God's commands all have our best interests in mind. Though He ultimately wants to provide us with eternal life, His standard provides the best life we could possibly live in this realm as well. God is not a kill joy, but rather the instiller of GENUINE JOY! Not a joy killer, but a JOY FILLER! In our life connection with the Living Lord we can have a joy that no one can take from us. (i.e. John 16:22) Retaining the Lord as the Master of our life, the end will be eternal life and the fullness of joy eternal.

Have a great day OF REAL JOYFUL LIVING!

No Double Jeopardy!

The United States Constitution -- in a principle embodied in the Fifth Amendment -- prohibits "double jeopardy"; that is being prosecuted twice for the same charge. Though the accused can appeal a guilty verdict, prosecution cannot appeal a verdict of acquittal. IN CHRIST we have what might be considered a similar provision set in place even before we come to trial before The Judge.

In Paul's letter to the church at Rome we read. . .
"(1) There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION for those who are IN CHRIST JESUS. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life has SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS from the law of sin and death. (3) For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, (4) in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." (Romans 8:1-4 ESV)

Due to the inclinations and weakness of the flesh, law -- neither God's nor man's -- has been lived up to perfectly. I am guilty of breaking God's commands. I am guilty of sin. My own righteousness is not sufficient for standing before God guiltless. Left with only "law" I stand condemned as a law breaker. However, Jesus came to earth and went to the cross where He bore the penalty for my sins and yours. IN CHRIST, God did what law cannot do; pronounce us guiltless. Accepting the penalty on our behalf "the righteous requirement of the law" was met. Sin was condemned in the flesh -- a judicial sentence was passed on it -- and the condemnation was removed from us who are IN CHRIST JESUS. My sins and your sins have been atoned for and therefore being IN CHRIST we no longer face those charges. IN HIM we are no longer under condemnation. Praise God for such an adequate provision on our behalf that allows us to approach God with confidence rather than fear.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY OUR ACQUITTAL IN CHRIST!

Averting Anxiousness!

Each day has its own challenges. (Matthew 6:34) However, the Lord exhorted away from anxiousness because our Heavenly Father is well aware of what is going on in our life and wants our trust to continue to rest on Him. (Matthew 6:31-32) He is trustworthy.

Taking a look at the life of Paul it is easy to see how many challenges he faced in life as he continued in ministry for the Lord. (note 2 Corinthians 11:23-29) Still, it was he who declared, "...In all our affliction, I am OVERFLOWING WITH JOY." (2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV) Paul trusted the Lord to strengthen him through anything he faced (Philippians 4:13) and encouraged others to do the same. A friend and brother in Christ recently shared the following equation to express Paul's statement to the church at Philippi: "The One" + me > all things. [Thanks Jim.] Acknowledging how our relationship with the Lord provides strength greater than all the things that challenge us is a focus that will aid in dispelling anxiousness.

In Paul's letter to the church at Philippi we read. . .
"(4) Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. (5) Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; (6) DO NOT BE ANXIOUS ABOUT ANYTHING, BUT IN EVERYTHING BY PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION WITH THANKSGIVING let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:4-7 ESV)

Our focus needs to remain on the Lord. Therefore, let us continue praying while we maintain a perspective of "thanksgiving" for the relationship we have with Christ, His awareness of life's challenges (remember what He Himself experienced in this realm), the strength He brings to us, and the assurance He provides with regard to our eternal hope.

Have a great day KEEPING THE LORD IN LIFE'S EQUATION!

Thanksgiving Days!

Today, here in the United States of America, is the observance of "Thanksgiving Day". Always being held on the fourth Thursday in November, it marks the feast given in thanks for the harvest by Pilgrim colonists in 1621. However, for our Canadian neighbors north of us, their "Thanksgiving Day" -- a day of thanks for the harvest and other good things received -- is held the second Monday in October. Perhaps other countries also have specific days set aside as special days of thanksgiving. Though the thanksgiving focus might be centered on a variety of things, we would rightly conclude that such observances would relate to where one lived or from where their CITIZENSHIP might be. What is it for us?

In Paul's letter to the church at Philippi he noted. . .
"(20) BUT OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, (21) Who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself." (Philippians 3:20-21 ESV)

Being CITIZENS of Heaven we have blessings not only of a physical nature, but also of a spiritual and eternal kind. Therefore, for us, thanksgiving should not be merely one day in November. Nor one day in October. Neither should it only be the first day of the week or other times when we assemble together with other believers. Acknowledging the great blessings that are ours, every day God provides ought to be a day of thanksgiving. With a grateful heart turned toward the Great Giver through all the days and seasons of life, may today be the beginning of a season of thanksgiving that stretches on into the eternity wherein we will live with our Lord and Savior forever!

Have a great LIFE OF THANKSGIVING TO GOD!

Quality Of Thanks!

I could sarcastically state "Thanks a lot!" or excitedly exclaim "Thanks a lot!" Same words, but conveying completely different messages when spoken with different voice inflection. What marks our thanks?

What does half-hearted thanks reveal? Would it seem to indicate one is not very thankful or what was received was really not appreciated? Perhaps it was not wanted. Maybe as the principle "It's the thought that counts" was considered, the real feeling was that more thought should have been given. Consider the statement, "Oh, it was nothing." being followed by, "Well, thanks for nothing!" Not very EXCITING is it?

What was the quality of David's thanks toward God?
"(1) I WILL GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD WITH MY WHOLE HEART; I will RECOUNT all of your wonderful deeds. (2) I will be GLAD AND EXULT in you; I will SING praise to your name, O Most High."" (Psalm 9:1-2 ESV)

Another translation reads. . .
"I'm thanking you, God, from A FULL HEART, I'm writing the book on your wonders. I'm WHISTLING, LAUGHING, AND JUMPING FOR JOY; I'm singing your song, High God." ("The Message", © 2002, Colorado Springs, Colo.; NavPress)

Think of a child so thankful for receiving something their heart had been set on. Picture the excitement, the screeching, and jumping up and down. As a child of God, do we get EXCITED ABOUT HIS GIFTS? Are we unwrapping them and revealing by our life how full of thanks we are to Him? May we not only thank God with our "whole heart", but with our whole life! Such a thankful spirit can keep us EXCITED about living today as we also EXCITEDLY look forward to God's eternal blessings yet to come. Let us continue recounting the numerous blessings He has provided.

Have a great day POSSESSING A SPIRIT OF THANKSLIVING!

What's It Mean?

Our language is full of many words, some of which we are quite familiar, while others we may not use much if at all. Perhaps there are specific words others associate with us because we use them frequently. Some words may be "nugatory" (meaning "of little or no consequence) while others are of great significance in relation to the growth of our lives.

According to a recent newspaper article, "nugatory" was one of 2009's top words among those looked up on Merriam-Webster's online dictionary based in Springfield, Massachusetts. The word that took first place for having sent people rushing to the Internet in search of its meaning was the word "ADMONISH", a word meaning "to express warning or disapproval in a gentle, earnest, or solicitous manner." The use of this word arose in connection with a particular political situation and then continued to be used in the House of Representatives and also blogs even after it was no longer front page news. The news article reporting on the attention drawn to this word noted some people may have needed a definition while others simply wanted to see how the word "ADMONISH" might be distinguished from the words "scold" or rebuke".

Is the word "ADMONISH" of significance to us? Though we might be ADMONISHED when it is not needed, are we open to it when it is?

As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth that struggled in a number of ways, he stated. . .
"I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but TO ADMONISH YOU AS MY BELOVED CHILDREN." (1 Corinthians 4:14 ESV)

In his letter to the church at Thessalonica Paul urged. . .
"And we urge you, brothers, ADMONISH THE IDLE, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all." (1 Thessalonians 5:14 ESV)

The Greek word translated "ADMONISH" in both of these passages is "noutheteo" and means "to put to mind" or "warn". [W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] ("nous" is "mind" or "understanding") To ADMONISH is to bring to mind what may not be clear so that proper changes can take place.

We can even give and receive ADMONISHMENT when we assemble together as Christians. Paul noted how when he wrote. . .

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, TEACHING AND ADMONISHING ONE ANOTHER IN ALL WISDOM, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16 ESV)

As we sing from our hymn books, some of the words we sing are intended to ADMONISH; clearly bring to mind the things that will redirect the actions of our lives. What a gentle way to deal with that need. In order to grow there are times we need to be ADMONISHED. It may have been the word for 2009, but let it be significant to us for life. May we always be open to that redirection.

Have a great day KNOWING THE WORD AND OPEN TO ITS BENEFIT!

Recognize Its Greatness!

What would our life be like if God stopped being gracious? I posed that question to our Sunday morning adult class yesterday and among the responses were the following: Hopeless. Without good. Wouldn't be here. Despair. No forgiveness. Dead. Separated from God. Under God's wrath. Etc. Along with these I would add that we would be filled with regret since there would be no forgiveness for past sins.

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus he encouraged. . .
"(4) But GOD, BEING RICH IN MERCY, because of the GREAT LOVE with which he loved us, (5) even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ -- BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED" (Ephesians 2:4-5 ESV)

GOD'S GRACE is truly a wonderful "gift." (Ephesians 2:8) Without HIS GRACE we could not be saved. If what we gain by grace could be earned, "grace would no longer be grace." (Romans 11:6 ESV) The provision of GOD'S GRACE was put into play in spite of the fact we did not deserve it. Again, that is why it is GRACE; "unmerited favor" or as the acrostic states "God's Riches At Christ's Expense"!

There are many who do not recognize how gracious God has been. Not knowing their need for GOD'S GRACE, they are not appropriately responding to Him and His Will. Since sin separates us from God, without HIS gift of GRACE we would still be "children of wrath" (Ephesians 2:3), "dead in our trespasses" (Ephesians 2:5), "alienated" from God's people (Ephesians 2:12), and also strangers to the promises of God, without hope, and without God. (Ephesians 2:12) Yes, the first in the list above is right that we would be "hopeless".

Being without GOD'S GRACE would provide a very dark picture for life now and for eternity. Recognizing this should cause us to appreciate God's gift even more! Let us never take it for granted! Rather than having a dark outlook, because of the "immeasurable riches" of God's grace that has been provided in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:7), we can have an enlightened life now -- encouraged and confident in the forgiveness and salvation we have been provided -- and look forward to an even brighter future to come. Praise God for such an extravagant gift as He has lovingly and mercifully given.

Have a great day FULLY APPRECIATING GOD'S GRACIOUSNESS TOWARD US!

A Gift Opens The Way!

Solomon wrote. . .
"A MAN'S GIFT MAKES ROOM FOR HIM AND BRINGS HIM BEFORE THE GREAT." (Proverbs 18:16 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads, "Giving a gift works wonders; IT MAY BRING YOU BEFORE IMPORTANT PEOPLE!" [© 1997, Wheaton, Ill., Tyndale House]

That's the way it seems to work in this life. A willingness to offer a gift OPENS THE WAY into the presence of those who might otherwise keep their door closed to us. If something is given or if something can be gained, then they are willing to take a moment to listen to whatever is on the mind of the giver.

But how about if this is turned around? What if it is the "GREAT" doing the giving? What if it is a GIFT from the "GREAT" to OPEN THE WAY for the recipient of the gift? Isn't that exactly what God has done?

Paul stated. . .
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free GIFT OF GOD is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23 ESV)

God has given us a gift. It is a gift we could never buy for ourselves. It is also a gift we cannot earn. It is a gift that could only be provided by He who is truly Great! And the gift was provided to OPEN THE WAY for us to be ushered into His presence!

Jesus Himself said. . .
"Jesus said to him, "I AM THE WAY, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6 ESV)

And the Hebrew writer pointed to the confidence we can now have when he wrote. . .
"(19) Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, (20) by the new and LIVING WAY THAT HE OPENED FOR US through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, (21) and since we have a great priest over the house of God, (22) let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (23) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful." (Hebrews 10:19-23 ESV)

God's Ways are not the ways of the world. The GREAT has given and continues to give. It is He who has provided the GIFT that OPENED THE WAY into His eternal presence.

Have a great day PRAISING OUR GREAT GOD FOR HIS GIFT THAT OPENED THE WAY FOR US!

Being Presentable!

Today people go to doctors for face lifts and tummy tucks and other procedures to get rid of WRINKLES or saggy skin. All this is done in order to make themselves look younger or at least a little more attractive. Perhaps we don't like WRINKLES. If we have a WRINKLED item of clothing -- shirt, slacks, dress, skirt, etc. -- the iron (with perhaps a little water) is used for ironing them out. This makes our attire look more presentable. Now, there is nothing wrong with looking good. However, that may not mean we are good. There are worse WRINKLES for which to be concerned than those merely of our clothing or skin. What about the WRINKLES associated with departure from God's Will.

As Paul began describing the loving relationship between husbands and wives, he noted Christ's relationship with the church as an example of giving and sacred love. We read. . .

"(25) Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved THE CHURCH and gave himself up for her, (26) that he might sanctify her, having CLEANSED HER BY THE WASHING OF WATER WITH THE WORD, (27) so that he might PRESENT THE CHURCH TO HIMSELF in splendor, WITHOUT SPOT OR WRINKLE or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish." (Ephesians 5:25-27 ESV)

Though the church is made up of imperfect beings, Christ's great work of sanctification provides the means of dealing with those WRINKLES. And water is a part of the plan. Having been buried and raised with Christ through the waters of baptism (Romans 6:3-4) we are brought into contact with the power of His cleansing blood and we continue to receive nourishment for our spiritual health through our daily use of The Word.

I love "wash and wear" clothing. After being laundered they can be hung up in the closet and then worn without the need of ironing. Having been washed and now wearing Christ (Romans 13:14 & Galatians 3:27), we can be encouraged our life's WRINKLES are being dealt with adequately. It is our Lord's great work motivated by God's great love that we can be made wholly presentable to Him. May we surrender more fully to that work on our behalf.

Have a great day RECEIVING CHRIST'S FAITH LIFT PROCEDURES!

Remembering The Thanks!

There was a minister who wrote in his year-end report, "Nine persons lost at sea." When the congregation expressed their amazement and shock regarding his notation, he stated, "Eleven people requested prayers for those going to sea, but only two asked me to give thanks for a safe return. I assumed the other nine were lost at sea." (original source unknown)

Oh, how thankful many were whose LIVES were touched and CHANGED FOREVER by Jesus. For example, there was the demon possessed man living among the tombs who upon being healed by Jesus stated his desire to go with him. (Luke 8:38) How extremely grateful he must have been to have his mind and his life back. However, there was one occasion when Jesus healed ten lepers where we read. . .

"(15) Then ONE OF THEM, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; (16) and he FELL ON HIS FACE AT JESUS' FEET, GIVING HIM THANKS. Now he was a Samaritan. (17) Then Jesus answered, 'Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? (18) Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?'" (Luke 17:15-18 ESV)

While nine continued on their way, this one returned to first give thanks. How many times has our life been marked by simply going on our way without remembering the thanks that should be in our heart and on our lips for all God continues to provide; both physically and spiritually? How often have we prayed to God regarding specific desires and needs, but then have taken the receiving of them for granted?

David exhorted. . .
"(1) Bless the LORD, O my soul, and ALL THAT IS WITHIN ME, BLESS HIS HOLY NAME! (2) Bless the LORD, O my soul, AND FORGET NOT ALL HIS BENEFITS," (Psalm 103:1-2 ESV)

Remember! Don't forget! Never take those benefits for granted! Especially when we consider how JESUS HAS CHANGED OUR LIFE FOREVER!

Have a great day FOREVER THANKFUL!

Walking For The Duration!

When I take my long Tuesday morning walks -- especially this time of year -- the first challenge is just to begin. Being still dark and a bit chilly, staying in bed is much more appealing. After all, it is also my day off and some extra sleep isn't such a bad idea. However, once I get going I am always glad I did not put it off. As the 18.6 mile walk begins, by the time I reach the two mile mark I feel I have gotten into the groove of my pace and stride. Reaching the five mile mark I begin to feel I could walk all day long and the seven to ten mile portion of the walk continues to feel good. Then comes the twelve mile mark when I begin to wish I was already home and I have to focus mentally to get over that hump. Once I have continued on I again become relaxed with the rhythm of the pace and the walking feels good. Focusing on the end of the walk drawing near, I again tell myself I can make it, even though I know there is one more hill to climb.

Besides the distance and the time of the walk, another challenge -- such as happened this past Tuesday -- is the changing of the weather which can impact the desire to press on. The wind came up for a while and made the walking harder. Then the rain began and the dampness was felt in my shoes. However, when the sun came out again, I was encouraged to press on to the finish. Regardless of the weather, I need to get the walk in.

The experience of this life's walk may be pictured in much the same manner. Making that first step to begin the journey with Christ is a big one and not easy when we have become so comfortable with where we have been. Though the world may tell us, "You made your bed, now lay in it.", Jesus is the one who said, "GET UP, take up your bed, AND WALK." (John 5:8 ESV) We don't have to stay there! Therefore, once we make that first step and begin the journey in Christ, we soon begin to feel more comfortable in our spiritual stride. We may soon reach a point when we feel more confidence, recognizing how great the Christian walk is and assuring ourselves we can carry on with Christ for the rest of our life. Then life's storms hit and the winds of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14) contrary to God's message try to halt our progress and we may begin to wonder if we can KEEP PRESSING ON. Fighting mentally to get over that hump we can then feel the courage to press on. Once we do that we can be encouraged by remembering we have pressed on to that point in spite of challenges and can continue to do so. Looking back on our life we can say, "I made it this far. I can carry on until the end. God has been with me, strengthening and guiding me, and it will be worth persevering to the end."

Through life's journey we may experience times when we would say, "Lord, I'm ready now. Take me home." However, that time may not yet have come. Remember the attitude of Paul when he wrote. . .

"(23) I am hard pressed between the two. MY DESIRE IS TO DEPART AND BE WITH CHRIST, for that is far better. (24) BUT TO REMAIN IN THE FLESH IS MORE NECESSARY ON YOUR ACCOUNT. (25) Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith," (Philippians 1:23-25 ESV)

Like Paul, we must recognize for now there is still ministry and service in which to be involved. There is still life to be lived and things to focus on doing. We must therefore surrender to pressing on as we allow the Lord to use us.

Some of you may have just begun the journey. I encourage you to KEEP WALKING. Others of you may have been walking with Christ for a while and feel you have settled into a good pace of Christian growth. Keep that joyful remembrance in mind as you KEEP WALKING. Then there may be those who are presently being hit with the winds of this world's ideologies and it seems hard to press on. KEEP WALKING ANYWAY. With the Lord as our life walking partner and the fellowship of fellow Christian walkers, we can make it day-by-day one step at a time.

In face of the challenges that were to come, Jesus exhorted the disciples. . .
"BUT THE ONE WHO ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE SAVED." (Matthew 24:13 ESV) [also Matthew 10:22]

May we too accept the Lord's encouragement to persevere to the end. KEEP WALKING! We're not home yet.

Have a great day ENCOURAGED TO GO THE DISTANCE WITH CHRIST!

Walking For Longevity!

A few weeks ago, while I was taking my usual walk from the office (a 4.6 miles loop that takes me to the post office, home, and then back to the office), a man I had never met pulled his vehicle to the side of the road, got out, and handed me a copy of a newspaper article from the July 23, 2009 issue of the Seattle Times. He stated he had been keeping it in his car waiting for an opportunity to give it to me. The short article was titled "Study: Faster walkers may live longer." [written by Jeannine Stein of the Los Angeles Times] My fast paced walking around town has connected me with a lot of people in our community whom I may have never met otherwise. It has also encouraged others to begin walking, for which I have been thanked a number of times. This article pointed to the analysis of several studies that had included 34,000 men and women, indicating although walking exercise is beneficial, faster walkers appeared to live longer than slower walkers. The last statement read, "Gait speed was a good predictor of survival across all groups, regardless of gender, ethnicity and health condition."

The pace of the CHRISTIAN WALK may vary from person to person and may not always be the same for ourselves at any given point of our journey with Christ. However, THAT WALK is the most significant one to be making. We may do many things in an attempt to lengthen our lives physically, but it is all for nothing if we have not focused on our SPIRITUAL HEALTH! That has life impact reaching into eternity! Our LONGEVITY IN CHRIST is not based on good physical health, because "though our outward self is wasting away, our INNER SELF IS BEING RENEWED DAY BY DAY." (2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV) We need to just keep on keeping on in Christ.

In Paul's letter to the Christians of Galatia we read. . .
"(27) for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. (27) For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (28) There is neither JEW NOR GREEK, there is neither SLAVE NOR FREE, there is neither MALE NOR FEMALE for you are ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS." (Galatians 3:26-28 ESV)

Reading through the Scriptures we may rightfully note the diverse roles within the church unique to male or female, or unique to the particular gifts we each possess. However, Paul made it clear when it comes to the eternal blessings we have in Christ, NEITHER OUR GENDER, ETHNIC BACKGROUND, NOR SOCIAL STATUS makes any difference. Together we have all become "one in Christ Jesus", having put on Christ in baptism. It is the WALKING UNITED IN CHRIST that makes the difference regarding SPIRITUAL LONGEVITY. May our CHRISTIAN WALK encourage others to join in with us as well.

Have a great day SET FOR LIVING LONG IN THE LORD!

His Body! (part 2 of 2)

Without the head, the body is incomplete. The church trying to function without remaining faithfully connected to Jesus (its Head) would end up being not much different than the many social groupings of the world.

Again, noting yesterday's text. . .
"(22) And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, (23) which is HIS BODY, THE FULLNESS OF HIM WHO FILLS ALL IN ALL." (Ephesians 1:22-23 ESV)

The Greek translated "fullness" is "pleroma" which initially was a reference to being like a ship filled with sailors, rowers, soldiers, freight, and merchandise. Each of these groupings of individuals provided for the complete function of the ship. The sailors monitored and cared for the ships operations under the direction of the captain, the rowers provided the power for moving the vessel, and the soldiers safeguarded the ship and its cargo. The freight and merchandise related to the purpose and destination of the vessel. Therein we find the "FULLNESS" of the picture of a ship's functioning according to its designed purpose.

Under the Headship of Christ, the church possess HIS FULLNESS as we function according to His purposes and design. There are varying roles we as members of His Body may fulfill, but each one is significant. We also must be mindful as we unite together in His work (not merely our own) that we have been entrusted with some precious cargo. God's design through the Lord's Body (His church) is for the manifold wisdom of God to be made known. (Ephesians 3:10) We have been entrusted with the Gospel message of salvation in Christ. His mercy and grace which we have received from Him are to be extended to others as we go about our daily lives. The essence of Jesus is also to be seen in our life because we are His Body living and serving under His direction. Apart from Him we cannot have the "FULLNESS OF HIM". He Who "fills all in all" has filled His Body with His presence, power, and "every spiritual blessing" (Ephesians 1:3) that is ours in Christ. This is to be the reality as we labor together in HIS wondrous work of redemption and the saving of lost souls.

May we each, like Paul, sincerely declare, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but CHRIST WHO LIVES IN ME. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." (Galatians 2:20 ESV)

Have a great day FILLED WITH HIS LIFE!

His Body! (part 1 of 2)

What is a body without a head? When a body is "brain dead" the body is not able to function on its own. The head -- containing the command center we call a brain -- is necessary to provide the information needed for the body to live and be active. It is the impulses of the brain going out to all the parts of the body that bring it to life!

God's plan from the beginning was that of sending Christ and the establishment of His church to carry on His Work. The significance of our Lord's connection to His Body (the church) was mentioned by Paul where he wrote. . .

"(22) And he put all things under his feet and gave him as HEAD OVER ALL THINGS TO THE CHURCH, (23) which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all." (Ephesians 1:22-23 ESV)

Just like the physical body can't go one way and the head another, so it is in our relationship with Christ. It is to the dictates of THE HEAD that we are to submit. It isn't up to the body to decide on its own to do something and just hope it gets THE HEAD'S approval. Yet that is what some seem to do; being involved in many works, but not necessarily doing the will from above. (note Matthew 7:21-23)

The church is not my body or your body, but CHRIST'S BODY! Praise God we can be members of it and be involved in His significant purposes. However, we must always remember we are under HIS DIRECTION to go and do and speak what pleases Him and furthers His Will. It is only through remaining connected to Him, THE HEAD, that we are held together and equipped to do His work (Ephesians 4:15-16), as well as being enabled to grow with the growth that comes from God. (Colossians 2:19) May we willingly remain under His Divine direction.

Have a great day ACTIVE AND ALIVE BY DIVINE IMPULSES!

Enabled To See!

When someone turns on a light, we are ABLE TO KNOW what is around us because the light has allowed our eyes to see. When the light goes on in our minds, it means something has finally dawned on us and WE KNOW that more clearly. ENLIGHTENMENT is a word that refers to the GAIN OF KNOWLEDGE and understanding.

Paul's prayer for the Christians at Ephesus was toward the end. . .
"(17) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, (18) HAVING THE EYES OF YOUR HEARTS ENLIGHTENED, THAT YOU MAY KNOW what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints," (Ephesians 1:17-18 ESV)

The Greek word translated "enlightened" in the text is "pephotismenous" (having been enlightened). The root "photizo" (pronounced with long o's) is from "phos" (also long o), which literally means "light" or "daylight". W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words points out the way it is used here by Paul is "to enlighten" or "illumine", being used "metaphorically of spiritual enlightenment." This Greek word makes me think of our English word "photo" and how a camera works by allowing light to come in through the lens to expose a picture on the film. I looked up the word "photo" and found its origin does in fact come from the Greek "phos" and "photos", meaning "light."

What was it Paul indicated the ENLIGHTENMENT was toward? It was to KNOW THE HOPE they had and the RICH INHERITANCE that was theirs in the Lord. Paul also went on to note the KNOWING of the immeasurable greatness of GOD'S POWER toward them. (vs.19)

God's desire is to clearly MAKE THIS KNOWN to us to encourage our continued faithfulness to and trust in Him as we face life's challenges. We do have a CERTAIN HOPE in Christ of which we can confidently count! Though others may see all that brings a sense of despair due to what is going on in the world, because of the SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT we have from God, we can maintain a sense of HOPE since WE KNOW His work continues on our behalf to ultimately bring us into His eternal glory. May the lens of our heart continue to remain focused on this assured HOPE we have in Christ.

Have a great day DEVELOPING THE PICTURE GOD ENCOURAGES US TO SEE!

Worth The Effort!

Sometimes we make the decision that something is not worth the effort, even before we have begun or tried. Such judgment is often based on very limited information. How do we truly know? (note Ecclesiastes 11:6) Though there are some things in life that may truly not be worth the effort, we do need to be careful we are not preventing ourselves from carrying out WHAT THE LORD DESIRES us to do.

In Paul's letter to the church at Rome, he noted. . .
"(6) For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For one will scarcely die for a righteous person -- though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die -- (8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE for us in that WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US." (Romans 5:6-8 ESV)

The inclination of mankind is to consider whether another is worth saving or not. Are they "good" enough? However, the Father and the Son invested in the means of our salvation even "while we were still sinners." The great contrast is that with us, too often the judgment is made beforehand. With God, the judgment will come later. For now He has provided the means of salvation with the desire for us to accept it. To God and our Lord -- Who willingly gave Himself on the cross for our sins -- the salvation of our souls was worth the effort.

Let us guard against pre-judging whether or not some will respond to the message of salvation in Christ. Instead, as we recognize we in no way deserved such a gift ourselves, remember GOD'S DESIRE is for the opportunity to be shared with others. May our life reflect God's grace has not been extended in vain as we live for His purposes, share the Good News with others, and leave the ultimate judgment to Him!

Have a great day BEING MADE GOOD BY GOD!

Today!

When I noticed on the calendar that today is a Friday the thirteenth, I thought, "All right!" You see, I'm not superstitious at all. I've walked under many ladders without experiencing misfortune because of it. This past August I actually experienced the real danger of ladders is being up on them. (I fell from a ten foot ladder while picking our cherries, but fortunately only suffered some bruising.) I have also opened up many umbrellas indoors. I am not bothered by either the number thirteen or when it falls on a Friday. Thirteen is a GOOD number. I was born on a thirteen (though it was a Sunday morning). The reality is that GOOD and bad can happen on any day.

Each day is a sign from God that for now it is His Will for life here on earth is to continue. Each DAY IS GOOD because God provides each one as a gift to be unwrapped and put to use. The manner in which we use our days reveals our sense of appreciation for them. How well are we doing?

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, he exhorted them to. . .
"(15) LOOK CAREFULLY THEN HOW YOU WALK, not as unwise but AS WISE, (16) MAKING THE BEST USE OF THE TIME, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV)

The days are evil. There is much bad going on around us. The devil is certainly continuing his work of deception and many are following the ways of this world. However, let us be like our Lord Who continued going about DOING GOOD. (Acts 10:38) Today is a GOOD DAY to shine His light of love and truth. That is a part of God's GOOD WORK He desires to do through us. May we wisely do our part to help make this a GOOD DAY for those around us as we live to the glory and praise of God!

Have a great day SEIZING IT FOR GOD'S GOOD PURPOSES!

Boomerang!

A boomerang in the hand of its skillful user, can return to the hand from which it was thrown. However, for the one who does not handle it well, if it comes back it could be injurious. The same can be true of our actions toward others.

Solomon stated. . .
"A man who is KIND BENEFITS HIMSELF, but a CRUEL man HURTS HIMSELF." (Proverbs 11:17 ESV)

Does that not sound true to the principle of sowing and reaping Paul addressed in his letter to the church at Galatia?
"(7) Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for WHATEVER ONE SOWS, THAT WILL HE ALSO REAP. (8) For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life." (Galatians 6:7-8 ESV)

Even when we treat others well, it does not always mean they will do the same. However, how can we expect to be treated KINDLY by those to whom we have not been KIND. In its general application to life the principle is right. When we do harm to others we actually are bringing more harm to ourselves. It boomerangs! It comes back at us!

There is a reward for KINDNESS. Being kind to others is doing a favor for ourselves as well. Even if it is not always repaid in this realm, it most certainly has its reward in the next. May we always be mindful of handing out to others what we ourselves would desire to receive. That is the action of always doing to others what we would have them do to us. (Matthew 7:12) Such is still a golden rule for living.

Have a great day HANDLING OUR ACTIONS TOWARD OTHERS WELL!

Walking Dead?

Mindless eating: the act of eating without really thinking about it. I must confess popcorn is that food for me. I can have a bowl of popcorn beside me while I am reading or watching television, and before I realize it, it is all gone. Almost robotically handful after handful is drawn to my mouth as the salty treat is consumed. Popcorn may not be the worst food of which to be guilty of mindless eating, but such activity can take a toll on the health when one eats without really being conscious of it whether hungry or not.

Mindless living: the act of living without a proper purpose or focus for life. We might describe it as walking around with an appearance of living, but "brain dead" spiritually. Paul noted how some through living "self-indulgent" lives were "dead even while [they] live." (1 Tim. 5:6 ESV)

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, he reminded them of where they once were.
"(1) And you WERE DEAD IN THE TRESPASSES AND SINS (2) IN WHICH YOU ONCE WALKED, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience." (Ephesians 2:1-2 ESV)

Rather than acknowledging and following God and the Spirit of Truth, this was the condition of following the way of the world and the will of Satan and his spirit at work in the disobedient. Though living, they were "walking dead", being separated from God in their sins.

Paul went on to note where the Ephesians were at the present time because of the great love and rich mercy of God. (Ephesians 2:4) They were made "ALIVE TOGETHER WITH CHRIST", having been saved by grace. (Ephesians 2:5) Rather than the mind being focused on the flesh (Ephesians 2:3), they became focused on Christ and had been raised up with Him. (Ephesians 2:6)

It is the life ELEVATED WITH CHRIST that is TRULY LIVED! In fact, it was for this purpose Christ came; that we might "have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10 ESV) Because of Christ we can TRULY LIVE now and for eternity with Him. Praise God for the spiritual resuscitation we can have in Christ. May we embrace the TRUE LIFE He provides as we live out our time here on earth for His noble and eternal purposes.

Have a great day BEING ALIVE IN CHRIST!

More Than An "IAN"!

What is an "ian"? By itself, I am really not certain. An "ian" by itself does not really amount to much. Its significance arises from that to which it is attached. The greatest significance of our life is through being a genuine CHRIST kind of "ian"; a CHRIST-ian! The suffix "ian" indicates BELONGING TO CHRIST, being OF CHRIST, being INVOLVED WITH CHRIST, and being LIKE CHRIST. Therefore being a Christian brings great blessing to our life and has the potential of blessing those around us, but it still really all about CHRIST!

Someone has noted, "A Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks, and a hand though which Christ helps." [original source unknown] Without that CHRIST CONNECTION what are we? How can we be known as a Christian unless were are truly IDENTIFIED WITH CHRIST.

We need to remember how Jesus defined discipleship.
"And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS DAILY AND FOLLOW ME.'" (Luke 9:23 ESV)

When we became a Christian, we died to sin in order to live to God in Christ. (Romans 6:11) This was through the death, burial, and resurrection pictured in baptism. (Romans 6:3-4) As the Lord's disciples (followers and learners) we are to have surrendered our life to take on His. This allows CHRIST to do His great work in and through us. May that focus be maintained so as to allow our Lord to use us in glorious ways to His praise and glory.

Have a great day LIVING AS A CONDUIT OF CHRIST!

Mind Over Matter!

"MIND over MATTER! If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Have we all heard that expressed?

What MATTERS? What counts most? What is held dearest? What's the predominant focus? On what does the MIND rest?

As Paul reminded the Corinthian brethren of the relationship they had shared, he acknowledged the power it had on his focus. He wrote. . .

"I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. IN ALL OUR AFFLICTION, I AM OVERFLOWING WITH JOY." (2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV)

Isn't that a marvelous attitude? Paul had such an amazing outlook, in spite of the trials he experienced. Since I have to admit I have not been tried even close to what Paul went through, where do I get off ever feeling I have the right to sulk over disappointments or frustrations with which I might face? Even in trials Paul knew what he had to be joyful about.

James also attempted to point to the joy that aids in MIND OVER MATTER when he wrote. . .

"(2) COUNT IT ALL JOY, my brothers, WHEN YOU MEET TRIALS of various kinds, (3) for you know that the testing of your FAITH PRODUCES STEADFASTNESS." (James 1:2-3 ESV)

Note James did not use the word "fun". Not all things that bring growth are fun. However, there can still be great joy in the growth process.

When the MATTERS of life get tough -- what should we do? Call to MIND the wonderful Christian relationships we possess and the encouragement we receive in the fellowship of the church. Call to MIND the growth made possible by the various experiences through which God brings us. And use the MIND to focus on what it is we are to learn when we are faced with any particular challenge. These are MATTERS of significance relative to this life and beyond, resulting in lasting joy!

Have a great day MINDING WHAT MATTERS!

Deep Impact!

Sometimes the weather can be so damp and cold one feels chilled to the bone. Even after moving into a warm space it may still take time for the chill to leave. Our outward focus, the pursuits that consume us in life, and the atmosphere we create around us can also impact in a deep manner.

Solomon stated. . .
"A TRANQUIL HEART GIVES LIFE TO THE FLESH, but envy makes the bones rot." (Proverbs 14:30 ESV)

Envy tends to be a persistent agitation to the spirit. A continual striving for what others have and failing to appreciate what one already possesses can not only lead to a rotten feeling in our gut, but to a wasting away of a spirit of peace as well. Such a focus begins to consume the life. Solomon's description reveals how deep and destructive an impact it can have.

Paul drew attention to there being "GREAT GAIN IN GODLINESS WITH CONTENTMENT." (1 Timothy 6:6) Therein is the blessing of less anxiety and stress from endless pursuits which not only take a toll on one's physical and emotional wellbeing, but can take away from the life even socially and spiritually. In the tranquility of CONTENTMENT there is the benefit of fewer distractions. There is the blessing of appreciating what one does have and a sense of peace deep within through the CONTENTMENT of simply living with a trust in God to provide and sustain.

Let us keep in mind how self-injurious envy is. It robs rather than enhances living. May we instead learn the "gain of godliness with CONTENTMENT" and thus receive the blessing of tranquility in the heart.

Have a great day ENJOYING TRANQUILITY DEEP WITHIN!

Needing Prayer!

"I don't have time to read the manual for this new machinery. You read the instructions while I go try it out." "Forget the map. Let's just see if this road will get us there." "You study for my test while I go out and party."

How would any of that work for us? Does it sound irrational? Does it sound ridiculous? Does it makes sense to approach these life activities or any other in such a manner?

As Jeremiah had been warning of the coming Babylonian captivity, we read. . .
"Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. (2) But NEITHER HE NOR HIS SERVANTS NOR THE PEOPLE OF THE LAND LISTENED TO THE WORDS OF THE LORD that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet. (3) King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 'PLEASE PRAY FOR US to the LORD our God.'" (Jeremiah 37:1-3 ESV)

I find that amazing! Though there was an UNWILLINGNESS TO LISTEN to the message of God, they ASKED FOR PRAYER on their behalf. Does that seem to imply an attitude similar to "Please pray for me while I go live my life the way I want to."? King Zedekiah had refused to pay a bit of attention to the warnings from the God to Whom he asked Jeremiah to pray. To say prayer was needed would be an understatement! However, the prayer needed to be for a more receptive heart, repentance, and a willingness to listen to the Word of God.

Why ask for prayer if we will not listen? Why ask for prayer if we will not accept God's guidance? Why ask for prayer if His Will and wisdom are going to be ignored? Why ask "PLEASE PRAY" if there is no desire to PLEASE GOD?

Praise God He is able to take care of messes we create for ourselves. However, continuing to do our own thing and expecting Him to fix it all is a testing of His patience and a demonstration we have no appreciation for the blessings He has provided. To acknowledge God as an answerer of prayer is to acknowledge Him as the One with the answers for life. May we develop a greater desire to surrender to His Will and accept the wisdom from His manual for living (the Bible), diligently seek to follow the course He has mapped out, and accept His tutoring in preparation of His final examination that will lead us into His glorious eternity.

Have a great day PLEASED TO PRAY TO THE ONE WE SEEK TO PLEASE!

Act Your Age!

How old are we? What does our life reveal? When we are expected to act our age, what age would that be? Is it merely the number of years we have lived that determines the manner in which we act? Have we all heard the expression, "Act your age, not your I.Q."? That statement generally means the I.Q. (intelligence quotient) is low, with that being the maturity level being displayed, rather than what the expectation is according to the number of years lived.

Consider the following. It has been noted that each person has five ages at any one time. (1) Chronological; the number of years lived. (2) Physical; how old one looks or feels. (3) Mental; how much one knows. (4) Emotional; the maturity of one's behavior. (5) Spiritual; the depth of one's knowledge and practice of Christian principles. [paraphrased from Jay Lockhart, Benton, KY (from the 2009 Great Smoky Mountain Marriage Retreat)]

It is true we do not all grow up and mature at the same rate. Some of this we can't control. However, growth is the expectation and where we do have the control, we ought to wisely pursue the growth needed.

The Hebrew writer drew attention to lack of growth when he wrote. . .
"(12) For though BY THIS TIME YOU OUGHT TO BE TEACHERS, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, (13) for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. (14) But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil." (Hebrews 5:12-14 ESV)

These had been Christians long enough that they should have grown in enough knowledge to teach others. However, they were still in need of basic instruction themselves. They had not grown and MATURED SPIRITUALLY.

Some people have been referred to as being WISE BEYOND THEIR YEARS. The wisdom of such individuals is not reflected in accordance with age, but rather in their understanding and its impact on the actions of their life. Though it is often assumed that wisdom is in relation to age and understanding comes with years (Job 12:12), that is not always the case.

In the Psalms we read. . .
"I UNDERSTAND MORE THAN THE AGED, FOR I KEEP YOUR PRECEPTS." (Psalm 119:100 ESV)

Therein lies the secret to the SPIRITUAL MATURITY we need to progress in; keeping the focus on the Will of God for our life. Even in the years of youth SPIRITUAL MATURITY is possible. That is because it relates not to quantity of years, but to the quality of the focus in them!

Peter ended his second letter by stating. . .
"(18) But GROW IN THE GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18 ESV)

What marks our age with regard to SPIRITUAL MATURITY? That age relates to life now and eternity to come. This body will get old and less functional as the years go by. However, inwardly we can grow and be "renewed day by day." (2 Corinthians 4:16) May we retain a proper focus toward growing up in Christ.

Have a great day AGING BEAUTIFULLY IN SPIRITUAL LIVING!

For Our Own Good!

Sometimes our choices are not for our own good. Though these choices may be what we want or think we need, they are not always the most beneficial.

Reading through Jeremiah yesterday I was struck by the following regarding Israel.
"(39) I will give them one heart and one way, THAT THEY MAY FEAR ME forever, FOR THEIR OWN GOOD and the good of their children after them. (40) I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I WILL NOT TURN AWAY FROM DOING GOOD TO THEM. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me. (41) I WILL REJOICE IN DOING THEM GOOD, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul." (Jeremiah 32:39-41 ESV)

God's people had not been faithful to Him. They had turned their backs on Him to worship other gods. They had listened to false prophets while mistreating the prophets God had actually sent. Still, GOD'S DESIRE was to do them good. For their good, God would put the fear of Him in them. His power needed to be acknowledged. His Way was to be upheld above all else. Even though Babylonian captivity was coming, God gave assurance of a return to their land. They would again learn that the true power of deliverance and sustained life was from Him!

God takes "no pleasure in the death of the wicked." (see Ezekiel 18:23 & 32; 33:11) Rather He delights in their turning from their way to Him that He will give them life. (also Ezekiel 18:23 & 32; 33:11) The best thing we can do for ourselves is to surrender our will to follow His! May we continue turning to God's Way so that we too may live to receive the good HE DESIRES to provide. In this way we give Him cause to rejoice. (Luke 15:10)

Taking It Seriously!

How seriously do we take our relationships? Does it bother us when they are not right? How much do we consider the impact of our actions on others? When we have done or said something wrong do we laugh it off or do we seek to make amends? Do we ever just say, "Oh, well" and let it go as if it never happened? It is bad enough when we treat others this way, but how about God?

Solomon noted. . .
"FOOLS MOCK AT THE GUILT OFFERING, but THE UPRIGHT ENJOY ACCEPTANCE." (Proverbs 14:9 ESV)

Earlier Solomon also wrote. . .
"DOING WRONG IS LIKE A JOKE TO A FOOL, but wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding." (Proverbs 10:23 ESV)

When we have sinned against either God or those around us, it impacts those relationships. Praise God for the means through Jesus that we have reconciliation with God. However, we still must take our transgressions seriously. Sin is no laughing matter because it separates us from God. It also causes division in our earthly relationships. Being sincerely penitent as we acknowledge changes we need to make, we ought to be willing to also humbly ask for forgiveness.

The blood of Jesus was shed for our sins. We make light of that sacrifice when we make light of sin. We also make light of our relationships when we do not treat others as we ought and then go on as if we had. Accepting responsibility for our actions when things go wrong goes a long way in maintaining goodwill between us and others. May we retain a sense of humility between us and God, as well as with others, as we sincerely seek to do our part in keeping those relationships right.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE ACCEPTANCE OF DOING RIGHT!

"One Of Those Days!"

"It's been one of those days." We've heard that expressed. We've probably said it ourselves. That expression is usually with reference to a day that has not gone as planned perhaps due to many unforeseen happenings or stuff that just plain didn't work. In that sense yesterday was "one of those days" for me. I started the morning early with internet problems and so I took my shower before getting the "teEn-MAIL" sent out. (You may have noticed it went out later than the usual time.) Later in the morning at the office while I was working on an idea for today's focus, I received a phone call as I was in the middle of doing a Scripture search to complete a thought. (This phone conversation took my thoughts completely away from where I had been focused and so you are reading this focus instead.) Initially the caller began bombarding me with too many things at once. However, once I got them to slow down and back up to deal with the questions one at a time, it all became much clearer. My explanations regarding some Scriptures that were bothering the caller were accepted and I was thanked for my time. When I went home at midday I was faced with internet connection problems again, having to try four times before getting to read and delete e-mail. (I think the connection problem is now fixed.) Yes, "one of those days." My focus was also impacted because I recognized I vented some of my frustration at my wife, which was not fair toward her. (I apologized and was forgiven. She is a gift of a woman) Having walked to the post office, bank, home, and then back to the office gave me the opportunity to work off my frustration and begin to refocus on what I was trying to get done for a "usual" Monday.

"One of those days." But I didn't have a flat tire like a woman did whom I walked past on my way back to the office. (I checked and she did have help on the way.) Also, my schedule was not completely altered like my wife's as she was called in to work on her day off due to another worker not showing up for their shift. (Perhaps they were having "one of those days", since my wife commented this was very unlike this co-worker!) Also, I did complete everything that did need to get done for the day. Yes, I would like to have had a little more time to do some reading. There were some things of which I would like to have gotten a little bit more done. But the day provided ample time to do what I had listed for the day as well as some unplanned ministry opportunities.

In Psalms we read. . .
"(22) The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. (23) This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. (24) THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE; let us REJOICE and BE GLAD IN IT." (Psalm 118:22-24 ESV)

The first part of this passage points clearly to Jesus and how He was rejected by so many as He ministered on earth. (Jesus cited it regarding Himself: Matthew 21:42; Mark 12:10-11; and Luke 20:17) [It is also cited in Acts 4:11-12 and 1 Peter 2:4-7 in relation to Jesus. Note also Ephesians 2:20] Though verse 24 is often quoted by itself, it's primary context is focused on rejoicing in the day of Jesus. We are living in THOSE DAYS as His disciples; having accepted Him rather than rejecting Him. THIS VERY DAY is a day to live to serve His Will and glorify Him. THIS DAY that we are living right now is a gift from God and one to rejoice and be glad in as Christians. Are we using it as "one of THOSE days"? May those around us begin to realize that THIS DAY is different for us than it might be for them because of Jesus. To Him be the praise and glory as we live it!

Have a great day REJOICING AND GLAD!

Knowing Our Place!

Some people think too highly of themselves and are in need of a life situation that might bring them down a few pegs. Others think too lowly of themselves and need to be raised up and encouraged to recognize their significance. In both cases maintaining a proper view of God and His interest in our life and allowing Him to have His rightful place helps sustain a healthy view of our own place.

After noting several things regarding the need to listen to and accept instruction, Solomon stated. . .
"(33) The FEAR OF THE LORD IS INSTRUCTION IN WISDOM, and HUMILITY COMES BEFORE HONOR." (Proverbs 15:33 ESV)

We must always maintain a proper view of God. The position He alone holds must be continually acknowledged. In so doing we WISELY LEARN to REVERENCE HIM in His Holiness and Sovereignty, TRUST HIM in His ability to do all He has said He will do, OBEY HIM because His Way always leads to blessing, and WORSHIP HIM because of His "worthship" above all. All of this implies WISDOM being gained as our own place in connection with God is properly recognized.

We cannot be properly exalted and honored unless we first HUMBLE ourselves. HUMILITY keeps us open to the instruction (including correction) we need, as well as being open to the places in life the Lord desires to move us. Someone has said, "We must let go of the life we planned in order to accept the life that is waiting for us." (Author unknown) Think of the blessings we stand to miss out on when we refuse to let go and allow God to bring us to the life He has in mind!

Position is generally not handled well when God's place is not kept in mind. Herod accepted the praise of men, left God out of the picture, and it brought his end. (Acts 12:21-23) In his case, how true we see the proverb, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." (Proverbs 16:18 ESV) John the Baptist, on the other hand, retained a proper view of his role and would accept nothing beyond it. (John 3:26-30) He HUMBLY exalted Christ and Jesus later exalted John. (note Matthew 11:11)

James exhorted. . .
"(10) HUMBLE YOURSELVES BEFORE THE LORD, AND HE WILL EXALT YOU." (James 4:10 ESV)

Have a great day UPLIFTED TO WHERE THE LORD WANTS US NOW!

Duly Impacted!

Jesus noted -- as a foundational focus -- the loving of God with all our heart, soul, and mind. (Matthew 22:37) Our loving response to God is to involve our ENTIRE BEING. Therefore our spiritual focus is to impact OUR ACTIONS. (note Matthew 7:24; John 14:15; 1 John 5:3) Our spiritual focus is to also have an impact on OUR THINKING. (note Philippians 4:8) If there is no impact on such areas of our life, what does that say about our spiritual focus?

James admonished. . .
"(26) If anyone THINKS HE IS RELIGIOUS and DOES NOT BRIDLE HIS TONGUE but deceives his heart, THIS PERSON'S RELIGION IS WORTHLESS." (James 1:26 ESV)

The Greek translated "worthless" here in the English Standard Version is "mataios" and literally means "void of result." [W.E. Vine's Expository Dict. Of N.T. Words] Strong's Lexicon defines it as "devoid of force, truth, success, result" as well as "useless, of no purpose."

Is our religious focus properly impacting OUR SPEECH? Do we claim to live a life under the control of God while OUR TONGUE remains unbridled and out of control? James indicated such needs to be given serious consideration because the implication is that when this is the case it is a sign of the religion having no power in our life and is therefore worthless or useless.

It can be so easy to get drawn into the language around us. Instead we need to consider OUR SPEECH in light of the standard from above! Does OUR SPEECH reveal the benefit of religion focused on the true and living God and the Lord Jesus Christ? Rather than it being representative of the spirit of this world, is it revealing the Spirit of God? If this is true, those around us will be convinced of the genuineness of what we claim to believe. Let us bear in mind that our ENTIRE BEING responding appropriately to God and His Will includes OUR TONGUE. May He be consistently glorified in all aspects of our life!

Have a great day REMEMBERING HOW MUCH OUR WORDS REVEAL!
