Yes, To Understand!
Yesterday we considered the following quote:
"Tell me, I'll forget.
Show me, I may remember.
But INVOLVE me and I'll understand."
(anonymous bulletin clipping)
Again, when I read this I immediately thought of the greatest teacher to ever walk the face of this earth. That Master Teacher is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. God wants us to understand His great love for us. Do we fully understand it? From what we focused on yesterday we may glimpse it, but do we fully comprehend it? I believe to truly understand God's love we must also become INVOLVED in it!
Jesus, the Master Teacher, in order for us to understand God's selfless love, ...
He TOLD OF IT!
He SHOWED IT!
And He sought to INVOLVE US IN IT!
God's love was not to stop with the disciples or others with whom Jesus came into contact. That love was to be taken on and modeled in life. Jesus expected those who accepted His love to understand God's love through the experience of sharing it with others.
Jesus said. . .
"(34) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, YOU ALSO ARE TO LOVE one another. (35) By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35 ESV)
And ...
"(12) This is my commandment, that you LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU. (13) Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (14) You are my friends if you do what I command you." (John 15:12-14 ESV)
My wife doesn't just want me to tell her I love her. She also wants me to show her I love her. And the great mutual benefit is for us to share in that love, to experience it, and to become involved in it together. This ought to be the same within the church. The world also needs to be loved in this way. This is what God has tried to get us to see His love is all about. It is through all of this that love is truly understood. For how could one possibly ever question the depth and genuineness of such a love?
Through the telling, showing, and then acting out of such a love, we begin to understand its power more fully. We also understand the depth of God's graciousness and mercy more completely. We also gain the experience of seeing the response to such genuine love.
The world has its standard, but that is not to be the one to follow. I remember a show back in the late 60's or early 70's called "Love American Style". We need to love "God's Style!" For God's love to be seen as understood by us, it must be acted upon as our standard for loving!
Have a great day INVOLVED IN LOVING "GOD'S STYLE"!

To Understand!
Someone has said,
"Tell me, I'll forget.
Show me, I may remember.
But INVOLVE me and I'll understand."
(anonymous bulletin clipping)
Reading this I immediately thought of the greatest teacher to ever walk the face of this earth. That Master Teacher is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ. Because God loved, He gave His Son (John 3:16). And Jesus, in various ways, tried to get the world to realize God is not an angry Being to be afraid of, but rather a Loving Heavenly Father Who desires the very best for mankind.
HE TOLD OF IT! Through parables such as the lost lamb and the lost son (Luke 15) Jesus illustrated God's great love. Through the teaching on loving our enemies (Matt. 5:43-47) Jesus laid out the principles of interaction in this life.
He SHOWED IT! Through Jesus' interaction with the disciples and toward others -- as well as His willingness to fulfill His mission -- we see the great selfless love of God.
John recorded. . .
"(1) Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, HE LOVED THEM TO THE END." (John 13:1 ESV)
Not even Jesus' impending death on the cross sidetracked Him from ACTING IN LOVE toward the disciples. Reading on we see the extent of His love being shown through the willingness to serve in even the humblest way; washing His disciples' feet. Even Judas received that loving attention.
Jesus then showed the ultimate of God's love through the giving of Himself on the cross for our sins.
"(8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR US in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8 ESV)
Do we hear the love? Do we see the love? But do we understand the love? Can we understand a love like God's? Can we comprehend a love so selfless? [Lord Willing, we'll consider that aspect tomorrow]
Have a great day FOCUSED ON THE TOLD/SHOWN LOVE OF GOD.

The Best Gift!
A couple days ago a statement on my daily calendar read: "Lord, the best gift from You to all of us are the people who love us. Thank You for such a wonderful gift. Amen." Yes, people WHO LOVE US are a very precious gift. How sad it is that there are some who seem to love things (possessions) more than people. It is also sad to know there are some who sense they are unloved. The reality, however, is that there is One Who truly DOES LOVE and because of that love provided the greatest gift we could ever receive.
In Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus we read that familiar passage. . .
"For GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16 (ESV)
GOD LOVED US enough to send the very best that could be sent. And JESUS LOVED US enough to go through the agony on the cross to give His blood for our sins. The power of His blood continues to work in our life even today. See how great a gift it is? It is truly the best gift because it is the gift that keeps on giving. May the manner in which we live our life clearly reveal how thankful we are for the most wonderful gift ever given!
Have a great day KNOWING HOW LOVED WE TRULY ARE!

Work Out!
Exercise is good for the body. It also impacts the mind and mood. Having a strong healthy body helps ward off disease and lends toward continued active living. However, my strength alone is not sufficient in and of itself. There are forces greater than me with which to contend. Therefore I must look for strength beyond myself.
As Paul was about to list the spiritual armor God supplies to help us make it through life's spiritual battles, he began by urging. . .
"Finally, BE STRONG IN THE LORD and IN THE STRENGTH OF HIS MIGHT." (Ephesians 6:10 ESV)
"STRONG" is from "endunomoo" ("en" is "in" and "dunomis" is "power"), "STRENGTH" is from "kratos" (power or strength), and "MIGHT" is from "ischus" (ability, force, or strength). [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dict. Of N.T. Words] The urging is to be strong in the strength of the Lord's ability or strength. There is strong. And then there is GOD STRONG! It is not because I work out, but because His Will shall work out that ultimate victory in the battle will come! Therefore in Him I will place my trust.
Have a great day KNOWING WE HAVE HIS FORCE WITH US!

Keeping It Alive!
When Jeremiah was sent to God's people to be His messenger, note the encouragement he received.
"(27) So you shall speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you. You shall call to them, but they will not answer you. (28) And you shall say to them, 'This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the LORD their God, and did not accept discipline; TRUTH HAS PERISHED; IT IS CUT OFF FROM THEIR LIPS." (Jeremiah 7:27-28 ESV)
Perhaps that doesn't sound very encouraging at all! How discouraging it would be to take a message to a people who would refuse to listen! Earlier in this chapter the description was that of "persistently" not listening. (verse 13) The problem was that the TRUTH WAS DEAD to them; it had "perished." They would not receive it. Nor were they speaking it. A couple chapters later we read that they had "taught their tongue to speak lies." (Jeremiah 9:5) What a sad condition! What is to become of life when TRUTH IS DEAD?
There are some who say there is no TRUTH; no absolutes. Some view TRUTH from the standpoint they can have theirs and you can have yours. However, the TRUTH is that TRUTH IS TRUTH and TRUTH is what we should desire.
Remember Jesus' encouragement when He declared,
"(6) ... 'I AM the way, and THE TRUTH, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" (John 14:6)
Without THE TRUTH we lose our way to the Father. Is the TRUTH alive in us? As Jesus -- THE TRUTH -- is alive eternally, maintaining our proper connection with Him we too are destined for eternal life. Through Christ, what was dead -- separated from God due to sin -- can be revived and brought back to life. (i.e. Ephesians 2:5-6; Colossians 2:13) Praise God for the life we can have because of THE TRUTH that came to earth and presently reigns above.
Have a great day WITH THE LIVING TRUTH ABIDING WITHIN US!

Bridging The Gap!
Where there is a gap that needs to be crossed various means are used to traverse it. When the gap is small someone may stand in it to help others cross over. Mountain climbers crossing a crevasse will use ropes or ladders to get to the other side. When the expanses are greater, bridges are built to make the connection possible. The greater the gap, the great the structure needed.
What greater gap is there than that which is between HEAVEN and EARTH? What greater contrast is there between the righteousness of HEAVEN and the fleshly inclinations of those on EARTH? Man is not able to build an expanse great enough to bridge that gap. It is a gap only God can provide the means of connecting.
In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus we read. . .
"(7) In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (8) which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (9) making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth IN CHRIST (10) as a plan for the fullness of time, TO UNITE ALL THINGS IN HIM, THINGS IN HEAVEN AND THINGS ON EARTH." (Ephesians 1:7-10 ESV)
CHRIST is the connector between HEAVEN and EARTH. He is the only means of bringing unity and He did so by means of the cross. (note also Colossians 1:20) Christ has made it possible for us to approach a completely righteous God, having been made righteous by His blood. Christ is to be acknowledged as the Sovereign over all and as we live in obedience to His Will, we are drawn into unity with one another and with the host of HEAVEN as well.
Bridges may be of many designs: floating (as we have several in the state of Washington), suspension, beam, cantilever (supported on only one end), arch, cable-stayed, and truss. However, ONLY CHRIST can bridge that span between HEAVEN and EARTH! Praise the Great Designer of the universe for His master plan for our spiritual life in Christ.
Have a great day FULLY APPRECIATING THE CHRIST CONNECTION!

Ability Not To Lose!
Flashing red lights warn us of danger. They may draw attention to a sign reading, "Danger! Do Not Enter!", "Stop!", or some other message posted for the purpose of protecting life. The flashing BRIGHT RED is intended to catch our attention. It is an important warning signal of which we would do well to pay attention.
I used to EMBARRASS really easily. My cheeks would begin to get warm and then, not only my face, but my ears would even turn BRIGHT RED. There are still situations today that may cause me to turn red, but for the most part I just seem to roll on ahead, even if I have made a mistake. With public speaking it is often easy to get the tongue twisted and make a mistake that causes others to laugh, but laughing with them helps things move along, making it possible to get back on track. However, it is possible to reach a point when nothing affects us; when we are no longer EMBARRASSED by that which should. We can become so used to immorality going on around us that it no longer bothers us. And when that is with regard to sin in our own lives, that is a very dangerous position in which to be.
In addressing the sinfulness and unresponsive heart of the nation of Israel, through His prophet Jeremiah, God asserted. . .
"(15) 'Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO BLUSH. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; at the time that I punish them, they shall be overthrown,' says the LORD." (Jeremiah 6:15 ESV)
This was noted in Jeremiah 8:12 as well. Losing the ability to BLUSH! What a sad condition! So desensitized that what is wrong does not register! Do we feel like we are moving that direction due to what we are surround by in this world?
Let us not lose the ability to BLUSH. May we not feel bad when some things EMBARRASS us. Such is an indicator we are still sensitive and therefore responsive to that which is contrary to the Will of God. It is part of the warning system of a conscience wired according to God's standard for living and thus a safeguard in directing away from danger. May the blessing be ours!
Have a great day RESPONSIVE TO THE WARNING!

Finding Fault!
Some people will find fault (or lay blame) wherever they want to find it. Sometimes this is simply because they don't want to acknowledge the fault in themselves. The more they can point the finger away from themselves the better they feel, but that does not change the truth that needs to be acknowledged.
Because of Israel's unfaithfulness to God, He asked the following through His prophet Jeremiah.
"(5) Thus says the LORD: 'WHAT WRONG DID YOUR FATHERS FIND IN ME that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?'" (Jeremiah 2:5 ESV)
As the next verses reveal, there was a lack of acknowledgment (or remembrance) of God's deliverance from Egypt, His guidance, and His bountiful provision. In spite of all God had done, the focus had turned away from Him to worthless idols. What was WRONG WITH GOD that they should desire to seek guidance and blessing elsewhere? What promise had God given that He had not fulfilled? What blessing had He foretold that He did not provide? In what way had God disappointed them? Had not the disappointments they experienced been due to their own choices and unfaithfulness to God?
We also see this contrast noted in the Song of Moses where we read. . .
"(4) The Rock, HIS WORK IS PERFECT, FOR ALL HIS WAYS ARE JUSTICE. A GOD OF FAITHFULNESS AND WITHOUT INIQUITY, JUST AND UPRIGHT IS HE. (5) They have dealt corruptly with him; they are no longer his children because they are blemished; they are a crooked and twisted generation." (Deuteronomy 32:4-5 ESV)
God: PERFECT in His work, JUST in His ways, FAITHFUL and UPRIGHT. Any iniquity (sin) is not with Him, but with mankind. It is man's works apart from the Will of God that are corrupt. Trusting merely in the strength and the wisdom of men has only continued to give birth to another "crooked and twisted generation." Unless we recognize where the real problem rests, we will not properly view God and accept the guidance we need. That is what leads to disappointment. In God -- our "ROCK" -- we can solidly place our complete trust and entire hope!
In Paul's letter to the church at Rome he declared. . .
"(5) and HOPE DOES NOT PUT US TO SHAME, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." (Romans 5:5 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, "And THIS EXPECTATION WILL NOT DISAPPOINT US. . . ." [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]
The shame comes from not trusting God and seeking guidance elsewhere. However, there is no shame in having our hope set in Him and His Will. That is an expectation that will not disappoint us! Being willing to acknowledge where the real fault rests should drive us to continually seek the wisdom that comes from above.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY GOD'S FAULTLESS TRACK RECORD!

Staying The Focus!
Being in the presence of certain people can have a calming effect on us. Even when going where we have not gone before, following someone we trust can keep us at PEACE. Though there are many aspects of life that can bring rise to anxiousness, where are we maintaining our focus?
In Isaiah we read. . .
"(3) You keep him in PERFECT PEACE WHOSE MIND IS STAYED ON YOU, because he trusts in you. (4) Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock." (Isaiah 26:3-4 ESV)
This was part of a song of which it was prophesied the day would come when it would be sung in the land of Judah. It was a song of trust in the protection and provision of God. The idea of the Hebrew word translated "keep" has been described as that of literally guarding as with a garrison of troops. What an encouraging picture of God's watchfulness.
The result such a trust in God's mindfulness would have was that of "PERFECT PEACE" or more literally, "PEACE PEACE" (Hebrew: "shalom shalom"). Real PEACE. Genuine PEACE. Complete PEACE. Not a temporary PEACE, but a lasting PEACE; the kind of PEACE only the everlasting God can provide.
Remember Jesus' words of encouragement to the Disciples prior to His death.
"PEACE I leave with you; MY PEACE I give to you. NOT AS THE WORLD GIVES do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27 ESV)
The PEACE we can have through our relationship with the Lord is different than what this world offers. The disciples were to face some great challenges, but they could still have the blessing of PEACE. It is only in staying the focus on the Lord that such peace can be experienced.
Paul exhorted those at Philippi. . .
"(6) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (7) And THE PEACE OF GOD, WHICH SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING, WILL GUARD YOUR HEARTS AND YOUR MINDS IN CHRIST JESUS." (Philippians 4:6-7 ESV)
I looked up the Greek word translated "guard" in verse seven and -- like the Hebrew in the passage from Isaiah we noted earlier -- it is a military term (phroureo) used for keeping guard or keeping under guard as with a garrison (phrouros). [source: W.E. Vine's "Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words"] Staying the focus on God in "prayer and supplication with thanksgiving" we can experience this blessing of godly PEACE. May we find PEACE in putting all of life's matters into the hands of God!
Have a great day KNOWING WHOSE WATCH WE ARE LIVING UNDER!

Significant Status Change!
When a guy and gal get married, they find themselves in a new category. They have new commitments, priorities, and responsibilities. They can no longer live carefree lives; just hanging out with friends and doing whatever catches their attention in the moment. Though married guys may still plan a night of watching a game together and married gals may go shopping or dining together, the new priority is a committed focus on each other. Delighting in each other, married couples are to devote themselves to each other in a giving and loving relationship. Also, as a wife takes on her husband's name and the two of them become "Mr." and "Mrs.", there is a new identity both share in the commitment to each other. To be married and live as though one were not would add no strength and stability to the relationship. In fact, such an approach would most likely destine the relationship for failure.
Recently reading through Isaiah I was struck by the following description of the relationship God desired to have with Israel.
"(4) You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but YOU SHALL BE CALLED MY DELIGHT IS IN HER, AND YOUR LAND MARRIED; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. (5) For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you." (Isaiah 62:4-5 ESV)
The nation had wandered away from faithfulness to God. However, God spoke of a renewal of His relationship with His people. No longer would they be called "Forsaken" or "Desolate", but would be called "My Delight Is In Her" and their land "Married" [Hebrew, "Beaulah"]. This signified not only ownership by God, but also implied His protection of them.
In verse two there was mention of them being "called by a new name" that would be given them by the Lord. Their identity was to be with Him. The commitment was to be with Him. They were to delight in God as He would delight in them. Acknowledging His faithfulness was to prompt theirs toward Him.
In Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth he stated. . .
"(2) For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I BETROTHED YOU TO ONE HUSBAND, to present you AS A PURE VIRGIN TO CHRIST." (2 Corinthians 11:2 ESV)
The redeemed (the church) are referred to as the Bride of Christ. (note Revelation 21:2 & 9) When we were united with Christ in baptism, we put on a new identity with Him as the baptism was in His Name. Our life became no longer our own, but His. A new relationship with new commitments, priorities, and responsibilities began. Are we delighting in that relationship to keep it holy and pure? May our life reflect sincere appreciation for the most significant relationship we can have.
Have a great day LIVING A LIFE IN WHICH THE LORD CAN DELIGHT!

Easily Comes!
There are some who will believe just about anything while others refuse to believe even the clearest of truths. As we are sometimes amazed at what some people will believe we may also be amazed by what they won't accept regardless of the proofs. What creates the challenge?
Solomon noted. . .
"A scoffer seeks WISDOM in vain, but KNOWLEDGE is easy for a man of UNDERSTANDING." (Proverbs 14:6 ESV)
It may seem odd to read of a scoffer (or mocker) seeking wisdom since Solomon earlier noted a scoffer's unwillingness to listen to rebuke. (Proverbs 13:1) However, this illustrates the problem is solely with the attitude of the scoffer and not with the truth presented.
How many times was Jesus -- THE WORD in the flesh (John 1:14) and THE TRUTH (John 14:6) -- asked questions by those who actually were not seeking to learn, but only to trap Him? They mocked Him and left angry rather than enlightened. They did not possess an OPENNESS TO TRUTH! Those who sincerely SEEK THE LORD know where to find wisdom. They are the ones who exercise proper discernment while the scoffer accepts information from the wrong sources.
Since God is completely consistent in what He has revealed, continually SEEKING HIS WILL provides the easiest way to gain the knowledge we need for righteous living. Understanding this, our pursuit will not be in vain. Praise God for the wisdom He has preserved and made readily available for us.
Have a great day CONTINUALLY OPEN TO THE WISDOM FROM ABOVE!

Can't Thank Enough!
When someone's life is endangered and they have been RESCUED by another, they usually have a desire to get to know their RESCUER. And when they have that opportunity, quite often they cannot thank them enough for having saved their life. Having been saved from drowning, having been resuscitated, having been carried out of a burning building, having been removed from a crashed vehicle seconds before it burst into flames, having been freed from the rubble of a collapsed building, etc. -- oh, how grateful the RESCUED person is. The words "Thank you" just don't seem adequate, though they are said again and again with every ounce of sincerity that is possible.
The sad thing is that too many do not realize how much they are in need of being RESCUED. There is a sense in which they are their own worst enemy because they refuse to acknowledge their need for Christ and the atoning power of His blood. They are drowning in sin, their world is collapsing around them, and they need the new life of Christ breathed into them. Yes, they need spiritual resuscitation!
As Paul acknowledged the great dilemma of the flesh in pulling away from God, He stated. . .
"(24) Wretched man that I am! WHO WILL DELIVER ME FROM THIS BODY OF DEATH? (25) THANKS BE TO GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin." (Romans 7:24-25 ESV)
The Greek word "rhuomai" can be translated "to rescue from, to preserve from, and so, to deliver". [source: W.E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] Yes, Paul thanked God and his life seems to have clearly indicated by word and deed that he could not thank God enough! He knew full well what he had been RESCUED from and how much he needed that RESCUE. He could not do it himself and neither can we. Only in Christ can we be DELIVERED from the powers of the flesh that wage war against us.
"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ Our Lord" that we have been RESCUED and "have passed from death to life." (John 5:24) May we continue striving to know our RESCUER more and more as we aim to live in a manner that reveals our sincerest thanks for the great deliverance we have received in Christ.
Have a great day THANKING GOD WITH THE LIFE HE HAS GIVEN!

Being Drawn!
We are faced with constant choices regarding what we refer to as "our" time and "our" things. How does that impact the direction of our focus? Are our eyes left predominantly focused on this realm or the eternal one to come? What is it that we are most being drawn toward?
Jesus exhorted. . .
"(19) DO NOT LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES ON EARTH, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, (20) but LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES IN HEAVEN, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO." (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV)
In an excerpt from Dr. John Barnett's "Discipline Yourself For Godliness" [which I received via e-mail October 12, 2009 from Crosswalk.com] he noted, "People who lay up treasures on earth spend their life backing away from their treasures. To them, death is loss. People who lay up treasures in heaven look forward to eternity; they are moving daily toward their treasures. To them, death is gain. Those who spend their life moving away from their treasures have more and more reasons to despair. Those who spend their life moving toward their treasures have more and more reasons to rejoice."
Doesn't that sound like the results of what Jesus warned against (a focus on earthly treasure) and exhorted toward (a focus on the HEAVENLY)? What despair to be found clutching the things of this life that we know will be someday left to others. No wonder Solomon called that vanity. (read Ecclesiastes 2:18-21) However, what a joy to recognize the AWESOME INHERITANCE that is to be ours in Heaven when our life on earth is through! Continually being drawn toward that HEAVENLY INHERITANCE is cause for great rejoicing.
Paul had his perspective right when he stated. . .
"For to me TO LIVE IS CHRIST, and TO DIE IS GAIN." (Philippians 1:21 ESV)
As long as Paul lived his life in the flesh it was going to be for Christ. His greatest personal gain would be when he departed this life to be forever with the Lord.
One could gain the whole world and be the poorest of the poor with the loss of their soul. (Matthew 16:26) On the other hand, one could lose all their worldly goods and be the richest of the rich in gaining ETERNAL LIFE and the HEAVENLY INHERITANCE associated with it. May our greatest treasure be laid up IN HEAVEN so that continually being drawn toward it we will have all the reason in the world (and IN HEAVEN) to rejoice!
Have a great day WITH A HEARTHOLD ON HEAVEN!

The Color Of Truth!
Colors have been attributed to many actions and feelings. Black has become associated with the darkness of evil. Red has been used to depict anger. Yellow has been the designation for being cowardly. Etc.
The statement has been made that people who tell white lies soon become colorblind. When one becomes untruthful in even the seemly small things, it becomes easier with bigger things. Eventually this places one in a state where not only can he/she no longer be believed by others, but the truth soon becomes a blur to the point the lies actually become believable to themselves.
Paul exhorted the church at Colossae. . .
"(9) DO NOT LIE TO ONE ANOTHER, seeing that YOU HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD SELF WITH ITS PRACTICES (10) and HAVE PUT ON THE NEW SELF, which is being renewed in knowledge AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR." (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV)
To be TRUTHFUL IN ALL THINGS is to be GOD-LIKE. He cannot and will not lie! (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18) He is all about righteousness and truth! Having been created in HIS IMAGE (Genesis 1:27) it is part of THE IMAGE He desires to renew within each of us.
As Christians we ought to be the MOST BELIEVABLE FOLK AROUND. Even Paul tried to keep it clear that there was no room for deception in the way he ministered and shared the Word of God. Truthfulness is an important facet of our Christian walk. May that GODLY ESSENCE be clearly evident in our day-to-day living.
Have a great day SEEING AND TELLING AS GOD WOULD HAVE IT.

Thoroughly Understanding!
Someone has said, "If we do not understand the meaning of judgment, we will never come to understand the meaning of grace." [source: bulletin clipping] Do we fully understand the riches of God's GRACE or are we guilty of taking it for granted? Though we might not have verbalized it, have we ever felt that Jesus really did not need to die for us because we are really not so bad? Sin is sin! It is rebellion against God and separates us from Him! Therefore, we must remember that because of our sins what we truly deserve is the judgment and wrath of God. However, by the blood of Jesus we have been delivered from that wrath. (Romans 5:9) Jesus experienced the death we deserve. It was for our sins He went to the cross. And because of Jesus we are also delivered from the wrath yet to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:10)
In Paul's first letter to Timothy he wrote. . .
"(14) and THE GRACE OF OUR LORD OVERFLOWED FOR ME with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. (15) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save SINNERS, OF WHOM I AM THE FOREMOST. (16) But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life." (1 Timothy 1:14-16 ESV)
Paul clearly knew what he did not deserve. (1 Corinthians 15:9) He knew full well the judgment against him for his sins. He therefore had a great appreciation for the GRACE of God; a GRACE that was sufficient in his life. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Acknowledging what we really deserve should cause us to truly appreciate the riches of God's GRACE. It is not deserved. It is not merited. It cannot be earned. If it could, GRACE would not be GRACE. (Romans 11:6) May we continue to be aware of our great need for God's GRACE and live revealing our due appreciation for it!
Have a great day AWARE OF OUR NEED AND SINCERELY APPRECIATING GOD'S GIFT!

Direction Of Focus!
To one who stated his willingness to follow Jesus, but only after he did something else. . .
"Jesus said to him, 'No one who puts his hand to the plow and LOOKS BACK is fit for the kingdom of God.'" (Luke 9:62 ESV)
It is with the focus straight ahead that the farmer is able to plow straight furrows across a field. Looking back, the movement will be off to the right or the left. Fixing the FOCUS FORWARD is what is needed. However that FOCUS FORWARD is not just on the plowing, but also on the sowing and the anticipation of a harvest. Are we maintaining a FOCUS FORWARD in relation to life?
In God's message to Israel through Isaiah we read. . .
"(9) remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, (10) DECLARING THE END FROM THE BEGINNING and FROM ANCIENT TIMES THINGS NOT YET DONE, saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,'" (Isaiah 46:9-10 ESV)
Looking back we should recognize God's track record of fulfilling what He has declared He would. In the beginning He set a plan in motion that is continuing to MOVE FORWARD even to this day. God has continually had a FOCUS FORWARD with regard to His purposes. As we read through the Scriptures it should not take long to recognize a message from Genesis to Revelation that continues to FOCUS FORWARD. A simple yet powerfully significant summation of the Bible's theme is "A King is coming. The King has come. The King is coming again!"
Like God, we are encouraged to keep our FOCUS FORWARD. Time is moving ahead. Every day is one step closer to our eternity with the Lord. We cannot change the past. However, we can live today with our eternal glorious future in view. May we continue looking ahead as we press on in life.
Have a great day FOCUSING FORWARD WITH GOD!

In The Company Of Wisdom!
We may not like being told we are wrong, but is that where we really want to remain? It is true some love the direction of their life so much -- however wrong it may be -- they are unwilling to listen to the correction they need. They are like those who "cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears" as they rushed at Stephen prior to stoning him to death. (Acts 7:57) Yes, so unwilling to listen and be directed back to God's Way and the blessings He desires to provide.
Solomon noted. . .
"A scoffer does not like to be reproved; he WILL NOT GO TO THE WISE." (Proverbs 15:12 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads. . .
"Mockers don't love those who rebuke them, so THEY STAY AWAY FROM THE WISE." [©1997, Wheaton Ill., Tyndale House]
There are those who scoff at the truth and refuse to listen because they like where they are. For those who want to continue doing their own thing, the advice or counsel of any "fool" will do. What a sad condition to not want to know the truth!
This is in contrast to what Solomon stated later in this chapter.
"The ear that listens to life-giving reproof WILL DWELL AMONG THE WISE." (Proverbs 15:31 ESV)
Are we seeking to remain in the company of the wise? The wise are those who are continually open to God's counsel, appreciate the manner in which it can redirect life, and will strive to direct others to it as well. It is true that being corrected or reproved is not comfortable, but if we WANT TO BE RIGHT should we not LOVE IT?
My wife recently stated and then posted the following on Facebook: "Until you get your life right with God, your life will not be right!" (October 4, 2009) Thank God for His Wisdom to bring us back TO THE RIGHT and thus into a proper relationship with Him. Thank God for those in our life who care enough to redirect us back to His Way. May we remain wise enough to accept the opportunity correction and reproof provides. Such will help keep us in the company of God and those who are wise enough to live life in accordance with His Will.
Have a great day OPEN TO THE TRUTH WE NEED!

Well Studied!
There are many who have a great interest in learning. They read history. They read literature. They read philosophy. Nevertheless, many in their pursuit of knowledge are like those Paul noted who are "always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:7 ESV) The Greeks were very zealous in their pursuit of knowledge. When we think of some of the great thinkers among the Greeks we recognize names like Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates. The problem then and even today is that too many are studying the words of men rather than the WORDS OF GOD!
Some today place the teachings of Jesus on a par with other great teachers. However, Jesus made some very clear statements that would place Him in the category of one of the greatest liars who ever lived if He is not Who He claimed to be. When we read His words, His interaction with others, and the manner in which He responded to charges and question, we should recognize a wisdom far above that of any man.
When Paul was reminding those at Galatia of the Gospel of Jesus he had preached to them and that they had accepted, he also asserted. . .
"(11) For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is NOT MAN'S GOSPEL. (12) For I DID NOT RECEIVE IT FROM ANY MAN, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ." (Galatians 1:11-12 ESV)
The message Paul preached was not "man's" message. Nor was it Paul's message. It was the LORD'S MESSAGE. That is why Paul continued to preach "Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2), always directing the focus away from himself to the Lord and to God! And because it was GOD'S MESSAGE, we find it does not conflict with the other inspired writers of Scripture preserved in the Bible; God being the common source behind it all.
What are we reading the most? What are we studying the most? I know those of you who are in school have many studies you must complete. However, as the words of men have been studied more and the WORDS OF GOD have been studied less, has our society and this world become a better place?
What are we allowing to influence our life: the words of men or THOSE OF GOD? If we want to please men, then studying their words will help us move that direction. If we want to please God, we must become more acquainted with HIS WORD. That way we will know how to approach Him, worship Him, talk to Him, talk about Him, and know what we can expect of Him. It is only GOD'S WORD that is going to help us find the Way to where He is! May we keep our minds traveling up that road!
Have a great day GAINING THE HIGHEST EDUCATION!

Viewed From Above!
With the use of aircraft (planes and helicopters) law enforcement is able to track speeders or criminals running from the law. Even in the dark of night and thinking they have successfully hidden themselves under bushes, with the use of night-vision goggles and other technology, police are able to see and direct officers on the ground to where a suspect is hiding. It has been interesting to see such footage aired on television. Many involved in criminal activity have found they cannot hide from the "eye in the sky".
News is also sometimes reported from the air as a news crew hovers overhead, zooming in with a high powered lens for bringing action on the ground into close view; fires, accidents, bomb investigations, standoffs, etc. Then even higher up, the military and scientists are able to use satellite technology to view areas for either surveillance purposes or to show how the extent of large fires or other catastrophic events can be seen from outer space.
Still, even higher yet the vision is clear as Solomon stated. . .
"The EYES OF THE LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE, keeping watch ON THE EVIL AND THE GOOD." (Proverbs 15:3 ESV)
It matters not where one is or what they are doing, it is not hidden from the "eyes of the Lord." The "evil" should wake up to that reality while the "good" should find comfort in it.
David acknowledged God's view where he wrote. . .
"(11) If I say, 'Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,' (12) EVEN THE DARKNESS IS NOT DARK TO YOU; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you." (Psalm 139:11-12 ESV)
As David was expressing these words, he was not seeking to hide from God. Reading this chapter we see how comforted and encouraged he was to know his life was ALWAYS IN GOD'S VIEW. It mattered not where he was -- in the deepest deep or on the highest height or time of day or night -- GOD'S LOVING WATCHFUL EYE was on David's life.
For some, they are in serious need of coming to grips with the fact God is watching, that they hide nothing from Him, and will someday be called to account for their choices in life. However, hopefully the rest of us find comfort in living under GOD'S LOVING WATCHFUL EYE. He is mindful of each one of us individually. God is fully aware of the life challenges we face and desires us to continue looking to Him for the guidance and support we need. Like David may we rejoice in the blessing of living under His view.
Have a great day APPRECIATING OUR HEAVENLY FATHER'S OBSERVATION!

Not All About Me!
As Paul began listing a number of the spiritual blessings that are ours in Christ, he drew attention to God's purpose in Christ, the Ephesians and their hope, and their eventual possession of the heritance in store for them. These blessings in Christ are for us as well. Following the mention of these realities, Paul made a similar statement three times to punctuate where our focus is to ultimately rest.
Note the following three verses.
"TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORIOUS GRACE, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved." (Ephesians 1:6 ESV)
"so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY." (Ephesians 1:12 ESV)
"who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY." (Ephesians 1:14 ESV)
With God's purpose of redemption planned before the foundation of the world, He had us in mind and we are greatly blessed. However, though it was for us it is still not all about us, but rather ABOUT HIM; "TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORIOUS GRACE." The eternal hope that is ours is also to be "TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY." And though we have a glorious inheritance to look forward too, that also is to be "TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY." None of it is to our praise, because we actually deserve none of it nor are we able to bring it about on our own. It is God Who is able to bring it all to fruition.
Though God's desire is for our salvation and His plan of redemption all seems to be about us -- and we should be greatly encouraged that He is completely mindful of our greatest needs and utmost interests -- it is all to draw attention to HIS OWN PRAISEWORTHINESS! As His whole creation praises Him by doing exactly what it was created to do (Read through Psalm 148) our highest aim as the workmanship of God created in His image is to do exactly what we were created to do. That is the greatest praise our life can lift to Him. While we thank God for every spiritual blessing He has brought us in Christ, let us focus to live our lives completely "TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY!" Making life all ABOUT HIM is the surrender that keeps us in the realm of the greatest victory we could ever experience.
Have a great day LIVING LIFE ALL ABOUT GOD!

Where's The Word?
What does "keeping the Word of God near" mean to you? Does it merely imply keeping your Bible on a shelf close by? (As I type this message I have several translations within arm's reach.) Does it make you think of keeping your Bible on a table within reach? How about keeping the Bible in your car? On your desk? Or how about always carrying your Bible in your pocket or purse? Do any of these come to mind when you think of keeping God's Word near to you?
Each of the above ideas are great, but ... for what purpose is the Bible kept in those places? Could I develop a sense of pride over what might be considered a "Bible Collection" on my shelves? Could I be trying to draw attention to my frequent use of God's Word by keeping a copy in plain sight on a table, a desk, my car, or in my pocket? These were some things Jesus accused the Pharisees of doing (note Matthew 23:5) as they would wear portions of Scripture in little boxes tied to the wrist or forehead (frontlets and phylacteries). These became not just reminders, but also attention getters and even began to be viewed as having power to protect against evil. [If you have a Bible dictionary you might want to read more on the frontlets and phylacteries.]
Keeping God's Word handy and even carrying a few passages of Scripture in our pocket is a good way to maintain a proper focus. However, note the nearness Paul referred to in his letter to the church in Rome.
We read. . .
"(8) But what does it say? 'The word is NEAR you, IN YOUR MOUTH and IN YOUR HEART' (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);" (Romans 10:8 ESV)
Paul was referring to a passage in Deuteronomy which reads. . .
"(14) But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so THAT YOU CAN DO IT." (Deuteronomy 30:14 ESV)
The Word is to be near for the purpose of obeying it! God's Word could be nearby on a shelf, a table, or even in our pocket and yet be far from us if we fail to put it into practice in our lives. It must be more than simply being in close proximity. To have His Word near in a proper sense is to have a life connection with it. With the mouth we confess the Name of Christ and all we believe linked to our salvation in Him. With the heart we believe and devote ourselves to obeying God's Will. This is really what it means to have the Word of God NEAR. May we never remove ourselves away from it!
Have a great day KEEPING GOD'S WILL NEAR!

A Set Purpose!
Even before the foundation of a house is laid, there is a plan. There is a blueprint. There is an end product in mind. There is a purpose already designated for the structure to be built. There is nothing haphazard about it. It is not just thrown together. Every detail is planned out with regard to plumbing, wiring, and all materials inside and out. There is a designer. There is an architect. There is a builder. And there is a purpose.
The same is true with regard to God's desire for mankind. Though we might recognize stages (or eras) of God's work, it was planned from before the beginning with a constant progression toward what He ultimately has in mind.
In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus we read. . .
"(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has BLESSED US IN CHRIST WITH EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING in the heavenly places, (4) even as he CHOSE US IN HIM BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, that we should be holy and blameless before him." (Ephesians 1:3-4 ESV)
Before the foundation of the world God had a plan IN CHRIST that had us in mind. Christ and what was fulfilled by and though Him was not God's plan B, but what God had in mind all along. Unlike us, God does not need a backup plan. The coming of Christ was God's plan so that in "the fullness of time" (Ephesians 1:10) unity would be brought between all things in heaven and on earth. This plan had our consecration, holiness, purification, redemption, and salvation in view; all being adequately taken care of IN CHRIST. Along with these present spiritual blessings we also have the assurance of obtaining an inheritance. (Ephesians 1:11 & 14)
From "before the foundation of the world" to "the fullness of time", God has a plan He "set forth in Christ" (Ephesians 1:9), the purpose of which will be fulfilled. May we remain IN CHRIST where we will be the recipients of "every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places."
Have a great day LIVING IN THE SPHERE OF GOD'S ETERNAL PLAN!

Beyond Words!
Some things are beyond words. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. How true it is that a single picture can convey in a flash what it might take pages to adequately describe. There are pictures capturing situations that can immediately leave us laughing, crying, in shock, or deeply moved in some other way. Sometimes when hiking and viewing God's beautiful creation from a high vantage point, I find it difficult to sufficiently describe it in words. We may have all had experiences that overwhelmed us to the point of leaving us speechless because of their awesomeness. Yes, beyond words!
Well, picture this. . .
"(15) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (16) and one of you SAYS to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' WITHOUT GIVING them the things needed for the body, WHAT GOOD IS THAT?" (James 2:15-16 ESV)
The context of James' statement related to faith without works being dead and his illustration provided a good picture of DECLARATION DEVOID OF ACTION. There were words of well-wishing, but nothing beyond them to take care of what was needed. And James rightly asked, "What good is that?"
John exhorted toward the proper focus for living when he stated. . .
"(18) Little children, LET US NOT LOVE IN WORD OR TALK BUT IN DEED AND IN TRUTH." (1 John 3:18 ESV)
Jesus didn't come to earth, say, "I love you", and then return to Heaven. He demonstrated His love by giving His life on the cross for us. (1 John 3:16) Is our love for God, for our Lord, or for others merely LIP SERVICE or is it truly demonstrated in a beneficial way? Words are good. They can be very encouraging. However, without action those words can be revealed to be empty and meaningless. May genuine godly love be clearly pictured in our life "in deed and in truth" as we follow through in service to others.
Have a great day PROVIDING THE RIGHT PICTURE OF LOVE!

Lessons Learned!
Jesus exhorted some who were judging by mere appearances to "judge with right judgment." (John 7:24 ESV) Do we need that same exhortation today? Is the world in which we live in necessity of taking it to heart as well? Are there not things judged to be right that are actually wrong while there are also things judged to be wrong that are actually right? Jesus made the above statement after declaring His teaching was not His own, but was from Him Who had sent Him (read John 7:14-18); that is the Heavenly Father. The life principles Jesus came to share were not of this earth, but of a much higher source; FROM ABOVE!
In a song God had Isaiah prophecy would be sung in the land of Judah, we read. . .
"(9) My soul yearns for you in the night; my spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when YOUR JUDGMENTS are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world LEARN RIGHTEOUSNESS. (10) If favor is shown to the wicked, he does not learn righteousness; in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly and does not see the majesty of the LORD." (Isaiah 26:9-10 ESV)
It is when God's Will is acknowledged and followed that RIGHTEOUSNESS is exalted. However, when we see immorality flaunted and accepted, the "wicked" will never learn RIGHTEOUSNESS, but will instead be lulled into thinking they are just fine doing their own thing. The "wicked" often fail to recognize God's patience and graciousness is their opportunity to change, not that He has changed His mind and decided to approve. The truth remains, God's judgment will someday be faced! Therefore it is wise for us all to learn from His judgment now.
It is not from the world's judgment (determination, discernment, perspective, wisdom, etc.) that RIGHTEOUSNESS is learned, but FROM GOD'S JUDGMENTS (determination, discernment, perspective, wisdom, etc.)! The RIGHTEOUSNESS of His Way and Will shall one day be recognized by all. What we learn from other sources (school, peers, the media, etc.) is to be measured by the RIGHTEOUS standard God has provided. May we continue to learn from God's judgments -- doing our part to keep them visible here on earth -- so that those around us may begin to recognize HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS and learn from it!
Have a great day LEARNING FROM THE HIGHER SCHOOL!

How Will They Know?
When someone brings up the name of an individual and we respond, "Oh, I know them.", how well do we really know them? Would we mention specifics about their family? Would we state from where they came? Would we talk about the things they enjoy doing or places they love to go? Might we also note what we know of some of their aspirations or goals in life ? What would clearly reveal we in fact do know them more than just being able to speak their name?
With regard to the most important relationship to have right, John wrote. . .
"(3) And by this we know that we have come to KNOW HIM, if we keep his commandments. (4) Whoever says 'I KNOW HIM' but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (5) but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: (6) whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked." (1 John 2:3-6 ESV)
John placed KNOWING JESUS CHRIST in the simplest of terms: to KNOW HIM is to OBEY HIM. To not obey would reveal we do not truly know Him, and thus any claim to KNOW HIM would then be a lie. To truly KNOW CHRIST is to know what He desires; to know His Will! It is to acknowledge what He has done on our behalf and has in mind for our life through our relationship with Him. It is to seek to please Him with regard to the things we do and the places we go. That is why John pointed out that if we claim to abide in Him we should naturally walk as He walked.
Is our life demonstrating how much we do truly KNOW CHRIST? Is Jesus truly the Lord of our life enough that there is convincing evidence for others to see? Or is our life a lie? This is certainly something to seriously consider! To KNOW HIM is to live in obedience to His Will. May that be the truth of our relationship to Christ.
Have a great day EVIDENCING OUR FULL KNOWLEDGE OF CHRIST!

Sense By Three Senses!
When someone tells us what a friend of a friend of a friend told them, we might wonder about the accuracy of what is relayed to us. Not hearing the person who provided the original information places it in the category of "hearsay" because it is not FIRST HAND information and we don't have the opportunity to say, "Tell me what you heard and what you saw." Though details can be researched to verify, it is the eyewitness account that we have more reason to accept and believe.
In the introduction to John's first letter, he started in a similar fashion to which he began his Gospel account of the life and teachings of Jesus. (John 1:1-2 & 14) Again, introducing the Messiah -- "the Word of life" -- we read. . .
"(1) That which was from the beginning, which WE HAVE HEARD, which WE HAVE SEEN with our eyes, WHICH WE LOOKED UPON and HAVE TOUCHED with our hands, concerning the word of life -- (2) the life was made manifest, and WE HAVE SEEN it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us -- (3) that which WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ." (1 John 1:1-3 ESV)
John provided a threefold reason for accepting His testimony. Number one: John and the other disciples HEARD Jesus' teachings with their own ears. Number two: he and the others SAW all that Jesus did that revealed the power of Deity with their own eyes. Number three: they had also TOUCHED Jesus with their own hands. Three senses were employed and based on that FIRST HAND experience they testified and proclaimed Jesus as the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Because of what they HEARD, SAW, and TOUCHED, their hearts and minds were drawn inseparably into fellowship with the Father and the Son. Therefore John testified and proclaimed it all as an eyewitness to draw others -- including us who read his words today -- into that same fellowship.
Peter -- another FIRST HAND witness of our Lord -- encouraged. . .
"(8) THOUGH YOU HAVE NOT SEEN HIM, YOU LOVE HIM. Though you do not now see him, YOU BELIEVE IN HIM AND REJOICE with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, (9) OBTAINING THE OUTCOME OF YOUR FAITH, THE SALVATION OF YOUR SOULS." (1 Peter 1:8-9 ESV)
Praise God He has preserved the FIRST HAND accounts on which to build our faith so we can live with the assurance of all God's promises in Christ!
Have a great day REJOICING WITH THAT INEXPRESSIBLE JOY!

The Blessed!
The BLESSED. Who are they? We look around and see people who may have things or status we think we could enjoy. We see those who appear to not have a care in the world and may at times wish we were there. However, how do those individuals feel? Do we know what is going on inside them? Outwardly do they appear to be well off, while inwardly are possibly in turmoil? It is amazing how two individuals can look at each other, both wishing they could trade places. We have images in this life of the rich looking at the poor and the poor looking at the rich, each viewing the other as the truly BLESSED.
The BLESSED. Who are they? Who are the TRULY BLESSED? Does it really have to do with possessions? Does it really have anything to do with status?
The BLESSED. The TRULY BLESSED. Who are they? Do they know it? God wants it known. God desires for it to be felt.
Paul, quoting David (Psalm 32:1-2), reminds us. . .
"(7) 'BLESSED are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; (8) BLESSED is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.'" (Romans 4:7-8 ESV)
Yes, those are the TRULY BLESSED! To be forgiven; to have sins covered; to know sin is no longer held against us; that is the BLESSED state in Christ. That is the realm where the possession is peace. That is the experience of status as children of God. That is the picture of the TRULY BLESSED!
One of the powerful verses of Horatio G. Spafford's hymn "It Is Well With My Soul" (written in 1873) is. . .
"My sin, oh, the bliss of THIS GLORIOUS THOUGHT!
MY SIN, NOT IN PART BUT THE WHOLE,
IS NAILED TO THE CROSS, AND I BEAR IT NO MORE,
PRAISE THE LORD, PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL!"
Thank God for His forgiveness through the power of the blood of Jesus Christ. Praise the Lord, O my soul, that it was not in part, but wholly taken away. Let us accept His gift of forgiveness as we reveal our adoration and thankfulness for such a gift through an obedient and submissive life to Him.
Have a great day KNOWING WE ARE TRULY BLESSED BECAUSE OF CHRIST!

How Much?
When Jesus was asked regarding the great commandment, His response was. . .
"(37) And he said to him, 'You shall LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD with ALL YOUR HEART and with ALL YOUR SOUL and with ALL YOUR MIND. (38) This is the great and first commandment. (39) And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (40) On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.'" (Matthew 22:37-40 ESV)
Heart, soul, and mind are indicative of the whole being. We would probably all readily declare that we truly love God. Our heart is drawn to Him and we are so thankful for the demonstration of His love by giving His Son on the cross for our sins. How could we not love Him? We might also affirm that this love wells up from deep within our soul. But if we love God with ALL OUR MIND, how concerned are we with what we are filling it? What are we choosing to read? What are we choosing to watch? What are we choosing to dwell on? Is it truly ALL OUR MIND or have we only reserved a small portion of it for God? Whose thinking are we allowing to influence us the most; God's our man's? Is what we focus on causing us to think less of God or more of Him? The answer to that will be reflected in the manner in which we live: where we go, what we do, kind of conversation in which we engage, what we invest our energy and money and time into the most, etc.
Paul warned. . .
"(5) For those who live according to the flesh SET THEIR MINDS on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit SET THEIR MINDS on the things of the Spirit. (6) For to set the mind ON THE FLESH IS DEATH, but to set the mind ON THE SPIRIT IS LIFE AND PEACE." (Romans 8:5-6 ESV)
Now there is an indication we need to give some serious thought to what is going on in OUR MIND. There is a great contrast between the focuses Paul noted; that of the flesh leading to death while that of the Spirit leading to life and peace. THE MIND set on the flesh will ultimately lead toward separation from God. With OUR MIND given wholly to God we will be continually drawn toward Him and His Will. May we grow in truly loving God with ALL OUR MIND.
Have a great day KEEPING GOD IN MIND!

Taking Sides!
Sometimes we are amazed at whose side some people will take. When we have been wronged our expectation is that people would clearly see our side and acknowledge the unfairness. However, that is not always the case. What about our own perspective on behalf of others? Have we ever looked around to see which side others were going to take before we made our choice or revealed where we stood? Do we always side with what is right or do we sometimes side with those who we like or with whom we are in close friendship?
Solomon stated. . .
"He who JUSTIFIES THE WICKED and he who CONDEMNS THE RIGHTEOUS are both alike AN ABOMINATION TO THE LORD." (Proverbs 17:15 ESV)
Another translation reads, "Whitewashing bad people and throwing mud on good people are equally abhorrent to GOD." (The Message, © 2002, Colorado Springs, Colo.: NavPress)
We live in a wishy-washy world. People too often waffle between supporting what is right and rationalizing or making excuses for the wrong. We need to learn to SEE AS GOD SEES; striving to see things God way. His standard is consistent and we are safe when we SIDE WITH GOD. That is always the side of righteousness.
Have a great day STANDING ON THE RIGHT SIDE WITH GOD!

Our Willingness!
To be USEFUL for something provides a sense of purpose in living. However, living "for me" is not a very high purpose. Living for others is definitely more noble. But living for God is even greater yet. Actually, living for God ultimately helps keep the focus on others and ourselves in proper perspective.
When God called the prophet Isaiah to become His messenger, we read. . .
"And I heard the voice of the Lord say, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'HERE AM I! SEND ME.'" (Isaiah 6:8 ESV)
Isaiah was willing. Though his work would be challenging due to the unwillingness of so many to listen (Isaiah 6:9-10), he faithfully carried God's message and warnings to the nation. This was the purpose for which God called him.
When we consider our own willingness to serve whatever purpose an opportunity with others might present, should we not develop a similar attitude that responds, "HERE AM I! USE ME!"? Perhaps we would do well to ask ourselves, "Am I purposely at this place at this time because God wants to use me?" Or even, "Has God provided this opportunity for a purpose beyond my comprehension?"
Remember Paul's exhortation regarding "opportunity" where he wrote. . .
"(9) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)
Implied here by Paul is that the reaping (or benefit) may not be immediate. It will come "in due season". Therefore we should guard against allowing the lack of visual impact to cause us to "give up"! The time for doing is "as we have opportunity" while we recognize the doing of good is "to everyone"; making no distinction of persons, though Paul did still note the special connection there is among believers.
As we begin the day in prayer for God's guidance through whatever might be the experiences of it, may we do so with a sincere openness to respond, "HERE AM I! USE ME!" Imagine having a heart genuinely willing to even be inconvenienced to the glory of God! What a privilege is ours to be USED BY GOD in service to His glory and praise.
Have a great day LIVING AS GOD'S SERVANT!

Expectation!
"Mom, can I go over to Nancy's Friday night?" "Why? When you asked to go to Nancy's last Friday, you ended up coming home way after curfew and the week before you ended up at Marcia's house where a large group had gathered and we had no idea where you were when we tried to reach you about a change in our plans that night." "You never let me do anything."
"Dad, can I use the car tonight?" "Why? Last Friday you were running around town after we had talked about it and got two tickets for speeding and the week before we saw you lay rubber pulling out of the pizza parlor." "You never let me do what I want."
Would it seem logical to say that parents are more likely to give in to their teen's requests when they have shown a willingness to be responsible and abide by parental wishes? How about with regard to our relationship to God? How does our EXPECTATION of Him match up with His EXPECTATION of us?
In Peter's first letter, he exhorted. . .
"The end of all things is at hand; therefore BE SELF-CONTROLLED AND SOBER-MINDED FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR PRAYERS." (1 Peter 4:7 ESV)
I find it interesting that the Greek words from which "self-controlled" and "sober-minded" are translated are "sophroneo" and "nepho", both of which have similar meanings. The word "nepho" indicates being free from the influence of intoxicants" and though it does not mean watchfulness, has been used in association with it. The word "sophroneo" (which is akin to the other word) is rendered "to think soberly" or "to be sober-minded." [source: Vine's Expository Dictionary of N. T. Words] It seems, therefore, that both words urge toward being clear thinking in life. Why are we making the choices we make? Why do we act the way we act? Why do we respond the way we respond? Why have we chosen the lifestyle we live? Etc.
Why did Peter exhort toward being "self-controlled and sober-minded? Because it can IMPACT OUR PRAYERS! If we are not seeking to live in accordance with God's Will, then why should we EXPECT Him to listen to us. If we rebel and turn from Him to do our own thing, why should we EXPECT Him to turn His attention toward us?
If we remain clear thinking in life we will be clear thinking in OUR PRAYERS as well. We will also acknowledge how the relationship with our loving Heavenly Father is to be reflected in the manner in which we live. May we sincerely focus on faithfulness to God's Will as we live in EXPECTATION of our Lord's return or our meeting Him in death; whichever comes first.
Have a great day OF HONEST AND OPEN COMMUNICATION WITH GOD!
