Properly Armed!
When facing a conflict or opposition of some kind, being suitably armed is an important consideration. We also need to give this consideration with regard to living victoriously in a world that seems to continually ignore and rebel against the Will of God.
Peter exhorted. . .
"Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, ARM YOURSELVES WITH THE SAME WAY OF THINKING, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to live for the rest of time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God." (1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV)
The Greek word translated "arm yourselves" means "to make ready" or "equip" and is said to have been used of a soldier putting on his armor ready for battle. Remember the spiritual armor Paul noted in his Ephesian letter (Ephesians 6:13-18) that God has provided for victorious living. We are to arm ourselves with the "SAME WAY OF THINKING" that Christ exercised in carrying out the Will of God He came to fulfill.
Our mindset can make a huge difference! Our outlook can significantly impact our outcome. Recognizing the deliverance from sin provided by Christ's suffering on the cross, we are to strive to live our lives "no longer for human passions but for the will of God." If we love the Lord why would we want to continue to live in that for which He suffered on our behalf? Jesus endured for the sake of what is righteous. We also have been called to endure for the sake of righteousness. (1 Peter 3:13-14)
Let us continually give consideration to that on which our mind dwells. Proper THINKING and the maintaining of the right ATTITUDE is a great weapon in warding off discouragement when life around us seems overwhelming. We are bombarded by ideas and invitations to live contrary to the Will of God. However, remembering that God's Way is right and will ultimately lead to life eternal should inspire us to continue living in accordance with His Way. May we make it our resolute choice to live for the rest of our lives for the Will of God!
Have a great day FOCUSED TO FOLLOW IN FAITHFULNESS TO GOD!

In The Head!
Headaches sometimes make it hard to focus. Sometimes headaches are brought on by pressures in life. For some headaches are the symptom of some other ailment in the body. There are also those who get headaches because of something they ate or drank. Though it may be said that "it is all in the head", when the head is aching it impacts the activity (or desire for it) of the rest of the body. When the head is sick, life is drastically impacted!
In a vision Isaiah saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, part of the condition of the people of that time was described as follows.
"(5) Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? THE WHOLE HEAD IS SICK, and the whole heart faint. (6) From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and raw wounds; they are not pressed out or bound up or softened with oil." (Isaiah 1:5-6 ESV)
The Hebrew word translated "sick" is "choliy" and is said to literally mean "in a state of sickness." Their spiritual condition was one of sickness. It was the result of sin and rebellion against God. They had forsaken the Lord. (vs.4) They had chosen their own way. They had been FOLLOWING THEIR OWN THOUGHTS RATHER THAN THE WILL OF GOD. Not only did they have a heart problem (being rebellious) but were sick in the head; in their intellect. Their thinking was not in line with the mind of God.
When Jesus was faced with those who opposed Him, he quoted from Isaiah 6:10 when He stated. . .
"For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear; and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart AND TURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM." (Matthew 13:15 ESV)
As the brain and the heart are vital organs for the survival of the body, so it is in a spiritual sense. How many are in need of radical heart surgery of a spiritual kind. How many are actually spiritually "brain dead". What we love and WHAT WE THINK are of great significance with regard to our spiritual health. As verse six went on to note the condition of the rest of the body, so it is spiritually. When our affections and thinking are not well, it begins to impact the actions of our whole being. If we need healing in this spiritual sense, let us turn to the Lord that we may be healed. May we focus on God's Will so that we may have soundness of body and mind.
Have a great day SEEKING TO MAINTAIN THE MIND OF GOD!

Peace!
Peace. We enjoy it. We appreciate when we are at peace within ourselves. We are glad when we have peace with others and they with us. We have a heavy weight lifted when we are at peace with God. And that is His desire. The peace with God is a peace that can exist even when there may be no peace around us (note John 16:33) and thus we can still have peace within ourselves as we trust in Him.
As Paul was drawing his second letter to the church at Corinth to a close, he exhorted. . .
"Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, LIVE IN PEACE; AND THE GOD OF LOVE AND PEACE WILL BE WITH YOU." (2 Corinthians 13:11 ESV)
Because of conflict and divisions among them (i.e. 2 Corinthians 12:20 & 1 Corinthians 1:10) Paul had written two letters urging toward their drawing together in closer unity and addressed the genuineness of his relationship with them. How would the world come to understand THE GOD OF PEACE if peace was not seen among themselves. God was not to be seen as some of the Greek gods who had to be appeased because of their anger. Rather God was to be revealed in their lives as the One Who loves and always has mankind's best in mind.
Jesus taught. . .
"Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be called SONS OF GOD." (Matthew 5:9 ESV)
Like Father, like child. Though neither He will -- nor should we -- compromise the truth or lower His standard for living, we are still to be PEACEMAKERS. And the greatest peace we can help bring to the lives of others is to bring them to the Lord where they can truly find rest for their souls. (Matthew 11:29) As we keep our own focus on God and rely on His guidance we can maintain the peace He desires for us to create and experience. May THE GOD OF PEACE be with us.
Have a great day EXHIBITING THIS CHARACTERISTIC OF GOD!

Cotton Candy Love?
Love. Not merely looking at each other with googoo eyes. Not just holding hands. Not simply enjoying each other's company. Not writing gushy letters, poems, or songs. All of that may seem sweet and be a sign of loving affection, but can it not take place without genuine deep seated committed love actually existing?
A friend and brother in Christ (who works with a congregation about forty miles from where I live) made the following statement in a sermon he shared with me. "God's love for us is not the cotton candy of gushy sentimentality. God's love for us involved the painful and costly sacrifice of His Son on the cross." [Mark McLean 09/20/2009]
Cotton candy may be sweet, but there's no real substance there. As soon as it is in the mouth it begins to disappear. However, the GENUINE SUBSTANCE of God's love for us was demonstrated in His willingness to allow His Son to give His life on the cross to provide the means of a redemption and salvation we did not deserve. Peter reminded his readers that price of redemption (or ransom) came at the cost of "the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." (1 Peter 1:19 ESV)
The GENUINE SUBSTANCE of both the Love of Christ and that of God was made clear as Paul stated. . .
"(6) For while we were still weak, AT THE RIGHT TIME CHRIST DIED FOR THE UNGODLY. (7) For one will scarcely die for a righteous person -- though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die -- (8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR US IN THAT WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US." (Romans 5:6-8 ESV)
Yes, God looks at us with loving eyes, mindful of everything we are experiencing in life. Yes, He is ready to hold and support us through life's ups and downs. Yes, He desires to have a close relationship with us as we live in His abiding presence. And He has preserved a message of love to encourage us to abide in His love as we live in a manner pleasing to Him. However, the GENUINE SUBSTANCE of that love was clearly demonstrated in what took place on the cross.
Later in his Roman letter Paul encouraged. . .
"(31) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) HE WHO DID NOT SPARE HIS OWN SON BUT GAVE HIM UP FOR US ALL, HOW WILL HE NOT ALSO WITH HIM GRACIOUSLY GIVE US ALL THINGS?" (Romans 8:31-32 ESV)
Praise God for the GENUINE SUBSTANCE of His love. What marks our love in return? Is there any substance to it? May it not be merely our words, but clearly demonstrated through the daily actions of our life!
Have a great day DEMONSTRATING AN UNDERSTANDING OF TRUE LOVE!

Eyes On The Way!
Sightseeing is great. However, we can become so absorbed in looking at all that is around us that we stumble and fall. When driving somewhere my wife will sometimes tell me, "I'll look. You drive." What she is telling me is to keep my eyes on the road ahead.
Solomon exhorted. . .
"(25) Let your EYES LOOK DIRECTLY FORWARD, and your GAZE BE STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU. (26) PONDER THE PATH OF YOUR FEET; then all your ways will be sure. (27) Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil." (Proverbs 4:25-27 ESV)
Just as important as watching where we are going is in a physical sense, it is also of paramount significance spiritually. We must be wise about THE WAY we have chosen. Our eyes need to be kept on the goal so that we are not sidetracked and lose our way. In THE WAY God has called us to walk we are not to veer off to the right or left, but remain on course.
Jesus is THE WAY. (John 14:6) Let us keep "looking to Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2 ESV); eyes remaining fixed on Him. By so doing our moral compass heading will keep us on the right path, enabling us to safely reach our final destination.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A FORWARD FOCUS!

Spilling Outside!
I remember enjoying watching old westerns on television while growing up. Quite often there would be a fight scene in a saloon and it was a little amusing how the punches didn't seem to really connect, but those fighting would go crashing about, breaking tables and chairs and creating quite a mess. Often those fights that began within, soon spilled out into the street, sometimes impacting others outside. Filming now makes these fights look more realistic. However, today, in real life, there have been brawls that have broken out in bars or clubs that have spilled out into parking lots and other places where bystanders have been shot or injured. Due to a lack of SELF-CONTROL actions have brought tragedy to innocent bystanders; seriously impacting by something that began within.
James stated. . .
"What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that YOUR PASSIONS ARE AT WAR WITHIN YOU?" (James 4:1 ESV)
WHAT GOES ON WITHIN us needs to be closely guarded because of the
ultimate possibility of spilling out into actions that impact those around us. James went on to address the desire to have and coveting and what it does to relationships. James traced the problem to A WAR RAGING WITHIN. Our desires need to be brought under the control of the Will of God. We need to guard against self-centeredness. We also need to guard against anger being allowed to fester and build until it explodes.
May we keep our passions UNDER CONTROL, for they can even wage war against our own soul. (1 Peter 2:11) Following God's Will and keeping peace within ourselves will safeguard our own life and bring potential blessing to those around us. May it be goodness and loving-kindness that spills out to impact others.

Not Invincible!
Sometimes youth seem to view themselves as invincible. Even though they hear WARNINGS regarding many things, the view is often, "It won't happen to me." However, have we not all known individuals whose lives seemed to have been cut too short? At times this has come about by no fault of their own; accidents happen. Still, many times such has occurred specifically due to ignoring the warnings about alcohol, drugs, speeding, "off limits" areas, or other risky behavior.
In Solomon's observations of all the things going on in life, he cautioned. . .
"Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. WHY SHOULD YOU DIE BEFORE YOUR TIME?" (Ecclesiastes 7:17 ESV)
Noting this verse with the previous one, Solomon appears to have been noting the extremes to which people go. However, acknowledging certain choices can bring life here to a sudden end is a WISE OUTLOOK on life. Seeing others get away without getting hurt should not encourage the taking of the chance ourselves. They may have merely been lucky.
Paul, speaking on the basis of a principle dating back to the old law (Exodus 20:12), exhorted. . .
"(1) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (2) 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER' (this is the first COMMANDMENT WITH A PROMISE), (3) 'that it may GO WELL WITH YOU and that you MAY LIVE LONG in the land.'" (Ephesians 6:1-3 ESV)
It is with good reason that parental authority should be acknowledged. They have lived longer. They have seen more. They know what others are prone to do. Yes, parents are not perfect. I know that full well from my own parenting years. However, it is often with the intellect rather than mere emotion that parental guidance is offered, desiring to direct their children toward that which will enhance rather than take away life.
Even as we grow into and go through adulthood, there is still the need to wisely HEED THE WARNINGS! "Why should you die before your time?" Yes, it is something to take to heart. As we live life to the fullest, let us do so WISELY as we also seek to glorify God in it all.
Have a great day OPEN TO THE DIRECTION THAT ENHANCES LIVING!

Consider The Source!
When people say things to us or about us that are not true, sometimes the best thing to do -- rather than overstressing about it -- is to consider the source and ignore it. Let it be their problem rather than ours. However, when it comes to WHAT WE SAY it is very important to consider the source.
James stated. . .
"(7) For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, (8) but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. (9) With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. (10) From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT TO BE SO. (11) Does A SPRING pour forth from the same opening BOTH FRESH AND SALT WATER? (12) Can A FIG TREE, my brothers, BEAR OLIVES, or A GRAPEVINE PRODUCE FIGS? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water." (James 3:7-12 ESV)
Therein lies our challenge; controlling the tongue. And it is a real challenge! As we consider James' illustrations from nature, both focused on the fact what came forth or was produced had to do with the source. From where the spring flows determines the kind of water that will be found. The kind of tree or vine getting its nourishment from the depth of its roots determines the kind of fruit that is produced. The best way for us to become more victorious in the challenge of controlling the tongue is to keep our focus on the source; THE HEART.
Jesus exhorted. . .
"(33) Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. (34) You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART THE MOUTH SPEAKS." (Matthew 12:33-34 ESV)
THE HEART! Is it fresh or polluted? What does the fruit of the lips reveal? When we consider what is natural with the rest of God's creation, let it be so also with us. Maintaining a PURE HEART and keeping the focus there will produce speech that is glorifying to God. Since Jesus warned that we will be judged by our words (Matthew 12:36-37), we dare not ignore the source from which they flow. May God help us maintain THE HEART that produces that which is both refreshing and palatable.

Beyond The Cover!
Most of us are probably familiar with the expression, "You can't judge a book by its cover." I have a pretty large personal library containing old and new books on a variety of subjects. I have one book with a beautifully embossed leather cover. It is a book about great teachers throughout history. However, some of the information on Moses as a great teacher and the situation of Egypt from which he brought Israel out, is not in agreement with the Scriptures. Then I have some very plain covered books filled with inspiring truths and their applications drawn from God's Word. The former book I have kept mainly for its cover. The other books I read again and again to feed my focus. Even with the Bible, we must go beyond the cover -- however ornate or plain it might be -- as it is the message contained within that brings the benefit to our life.
Just like a book, we must be careful regarding our quick assessments of the lives of others. James addressed it in this way. . .
"(1) My brothers, SHOW NO PARTIALITY as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. (2) For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, (3) and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, 'You sit here in a good place,' while you say to the poor man, 'You stand over there,' or, 'Sit down at my feet,' (4) have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and BECOME JUDGES WITH EVIL THOUGHTS?" (James 2:1-4 ESV)
How often have you allowed "the clothes" to determine who you were going to sit with or associate at school or some other event? James addressed such a situation existing within the fellowship of Christians and the charge was that of judging with "evil thoughts"! Such quick judgments of others lives based on how they dress is called stereotyping. If we can put people in a box or slot, then perhaps we feel we understand them. Now, stereotyping is defined as being an OVERSIMPLIFIED conception of others. However, recognizing God created all mankind to be not only physical and social beings, but also spiritual, means there is MUCH MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE.
Paul exhorted. . .
"(16) Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight." (Romans 12:16 ESV)
Let us be careful of over esteeming some while looking down on others. Doing so does not make us any better, but reveals we have a faulty thought process that James called "evil". Let us instead value the significance of the lives of others as we recognize all are a part God's Creation, have the same basic needs, and He ultimately desires a genuine relationship with them for now and eternity. May we fulfill our part in drawing them to Him.
Have a great day STRIVING TO SEE OTHERS AS GOD DOES!

Significance Of One!
The question is often asked, "Can ONE really make a difference?" We most often view the significance in numbers. However, that is not God's view! God views the significance of ONE! God values ONE!
Remember the account of Abraham pleading on behalf of the city of Sodom (Genesis 18:22-32). Abraham began his request for the sparing of Sodom based on the possibility of 50 righteous individuals being in that city. Then he based his request on the possibility of 45, then 40, 30, 20, and finally 10. God was agreeable to sparing the city on behalf of even ten righteous individuals, but unfortunately not even that number could be found. Ten righteous individuals would have been significant enough to spare the city.
Well, that was the significance ten would have made, but how about ONE? Is ONE significant for even such an idea?
Reading through Jeremiah I came across this powerful idea. Remember Jeremiah has been referred to as "the weeping prophet." He was also the writer of Lamentations. The nation of Israel was not in a good spiritual relationship with God during the time of this prophet. There was truly much to weep over as the nation was in a real sorry state. You might wonder how many it would take to make a difference in God's view.
We read. . .
"(1)Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, look and take note! Search her squares to see IF YOU CAN FIND A MAN, ONE WHO DOES JUSTICE AND SEEKS TRUTH, THAT I MAY PARDON HER. (2) Though they say, 'As the LORD lives,' yet they swear falsely." (Jeremiah 5:1-2 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, ". . . IF YOU CAN FIND EVEN ONE PERSON WHO IS JUST AND HONEST, I WILL NOT DESTROY THE CITY."
Here is the value of ONE! If just ONE honest individual; just ONE truth seeker; just ONE such individual could be found, God would forgive the city of Jerusalem. This was God's Holy City, yet here was the call to search for just ONE such person. ONE person could have been key to the forgiveness of a whole community.
ONE person, living for God, can significantly impact the lives of others. ONE on ONE souls are brought to Christ. ONE, daring to stand faithfully in the face of opposition, can be a powerful example for God. ONE doing his/her part where they are can make a difference in the outcome of many things. It could have happened in Jeremiah's day. It can happen in our day. ONE person may be key to the salvation of a whole community.
As a child of God, never underestimate your value and significance in His great scheme of things.
Have a great day BEING ONE FOR GOD!

Go Ahead And Ask!
Sometimes we are hesitant to ask questions or seek the wisdom of others because we don't want to appear stupid or ignorant for not knowing. Perhaps this is because some have responded to our questions in a condescending manner. Have we ever heard responses such as: "You mean you don't know that?", "That's a stupid question!", "How dumb can you be!", "What, you again?", or "It's about time you asked for help!", etc. Friends sometimes do this. Even some teachers unfortunately respond in such a way. This can make us afraid to ask again. Is any of this the kind of response we fear from God?
James encouraged. . .
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ASK GOD, WHO GIVES GENEROUSLY TO ALL WITHOUT REPROACH, and it will be given him." (James 1:5 ESV)
James went on to exhort that such asking was to be done in faith without doubting. (vs.6) God wants us to ask. He will not reproach us -- or as the New Living Translation reads, ". . . he will not resent it." -- for asking. He is eager for us to seek His guidance in all things. He loves for us to look beyond ourselves and ultimately to Him for the WISDOM we need. With Him, the stupid thing is to not ask! For that we could be scolded, but not for asking from Him the WISDOM we need for living our day-to-day lives.
God has invited us to ask (i.e. Matthew 7:7-8) , therefore we should not be afraid. When it comes to seeking GOD'S WISDOM for living, let us ask. Let us keep asking. By so doing our focus will remain on Him and His Will rather than relying on ourselves.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY GOD'S OPEN INVITATION!

Flighty Words!
Reading through Proverbs yesterday morning I was struck by a proverb that had caught my attention before. Like yesterday's focus, it relates to responding to others. Looking back through my "teEn-MAIL" indexes I found I had focused on this passage only once since "teEn-MAIL" began in 1998. Thinking about it again myself, I decided to simply resend that focus for today. This focus was originally sent October 1, 2005.
FLIGHTY WORDS!
It is amazing to watch birds flitting this way and that, appearing to be ready to land, but then fluttering away again. With fascination I have watched barn swallows as they would circle, swoop, dive, shoot up quickly toward the sky and then back down, darting about, but not coming to rest. I've even had them circle close to my feet. Sometimes birds fluttering about appear as if they are going to roost, but then suddenly fly away. It is as if they check out the spot and then decide it is not the place to rest.
Solomon encouraged...
"Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, A CURSE THAT IS CAUSELESS DOES NOT ALIGHT." (Proverbs 26:2 ESV)
Words and statements by others can hurt and hurt deeply. Nevertheless, there are times when we just have to let some statements people make go over our head. People often speak rashly or out of anger. We may not deserve their words and the one who has spoken them may even regret them later. However, there is a certain sense of calm we can retain when we know we are innocent of a groundless charge.
This proverb of Solomon is similar to the English proverb, "Curses, like young chickens, always come home to roost." There are times when people make misguided judgments and statements or accuse without cause, only to eventually have those words come back on themselves. Such was mentioned in a prayer of David regarding his accusers. (Psalm 109:16-20)
Solomon advised...
"(21) DO NOT TAKE TO HEART ALL THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE SAY, lest you hear your servant cursing you. (22) Your heart knows that many times you have yourself cursed others." (Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 ESV)
Some things we need to just let go! We know the condition of our relationship to God. We know full well what our motives are as we interact with others. When we have been cursed or wrongly criticized by another, the words (like the birds) may even flit here and there between people for a while, but as we live uprightly the charge will eventually fly away as it is found to be untrue. Because the charge is groundless it will have no place to land.

Three Key Responses!
In the twelfth chapter of Romans -- as Paul addressed what has been referred to as the marks of a true Christian -- among the exhortations he included is. . .
"BLESS those who persecute you; BLESS and DO NOT CURSE THEM." (Romans 12:14 ESV)
I think most of us would agree that such is easier said than done. What seems to be the natural inclination is to curse back or retaliate in some other way. However, Paul went on to point out that vengeance is God's department, not ours. (Romans 12:19) When we genuinely seek TO BLESS, we are less likely to curse! Paul's final exhortation in this chapter was to "not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21 ESV) To BLESS rather than curse is to overcome with good.
Though it may be challenging, this concept was not merely Paul's idea. In fact, the quotation regarding vengeance belonging to God was drawn from the Old Testament. (Deuteronomy 32:35) Besides that, Jesus Himself taught the concept similarly in His sermon on the mount.
Jesus emphatically declared. . .
"(44) But I say to you, LOVE your enemies and PRAY for those who persecute you, (45) so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:44-45 ESV)
Here Jesus exhorted toward two actions on our part: LOVE them and PRAY FOR them. Again, when these actions are genuine on our part we will be less likely to curse them. However, besides these two actions, Jesus noted our Heavenly Father's willingness to BLESS even "the evil" and "the unjust" in that they receive the blessings of His sun and His rains. Now, we might say, "They don't deserve to be blessed." However, when it comes down to it, how much do we really deserve the blessings of God? His blessings are a sign of His graciousness. Aiming to be like God, we also are expected to be gracious. Therefore, though it may feel unnatural (because of the flesh) let us BLESS, LOVE, and PRAY for those who stand against us, for in so doing we are allowing the image of God to become more evident in our life.
To return evil for evil is to allow others to determine our actions. Do we want our lives to fall under such a power? Instead, to return good for evil is to allow God's Spirit to work powerfully in our life and determine our responses. Let us leave the weightier stuff to God. It is a much lighter load to bear when we respond by BLESSING, LOVING, and PRAYING. May such become more and more the genuine response regardless of what is deserved. Thank God we ourselves have received such a blessing from Him.
Have a great day OVERCOMING WITH GODLY CHARACTER!

Get It?
There was a woman who would always say to the preacher following his sermons, "Boy, you sure gave it to them this morning! You sure preached at them today!" However, one day, due to very bad weather conditions she found herself the only one able to show up for services. The preacher decided since she was there he might as well preach as usual. When he was through he was very interested to see how the lesson impacted her. As she prepared to exit the building she turned to him and said, "Boy, if they had been here they sure would have gotten it today."
I don't direct my preaching at any one person, though it does need to relate to the congregation in some way. Some lessons may be more needed than others by particular individuals, but there is always something there within the message of God's Word to be picked up. I know as I preach I need to be concerned whether or not the message of God -- from the Scriptures looked at -- is GOTTEN. It is more important for me to get people "sold" than merely "told". Still, there is an individual responsibility to look for and receive personally the message God desires to bring to our hearts. We miss out on much when we approach the Scriptures from the standpoint of how they relate to everyone else. It would be a mistake also for me to preach and fail to GET what I must apply to myself from the passages on which we focused.
Regarding the Scriptures, Paul wrote. . .
"(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for TEACHING, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, and for TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, (17) that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
If the passage is teaching then I need to GET the point. If the verse reproves (or rebukes), then I need to GET what is out of place in my life and respond appropriately. If the Scripture is correcting, then I need to GET the understanding of how parallel my life is to the truth of God's Word. And if the passage is training in what is right, then I need to GET that training being offered. It is only through this personal focus that I can GET equipped for the work in which God intends for me to be involved.
GET IT? Do I? Do you? Let us pray we do; for that is God's blessing and will for us!
Have a great day GETTING THE PERSONAL APPLICATION GOD PRESENTS!

Good Fruit!
A few days ago my wife bought some apples that are now IN SEASON. Oh, how I enjoyed biting into that crisp sweet fruit, just the way apples always ought to be; not mushy. It is plums I enjoy soft and juicy. Then yesterday she brought in a pear from a tree in our own yard. It tasted so good I was ready to go out and begin picking them. However, my wife was presently making blackberry jam (another fruit IN SEASON) and so we will be picking the pears within the next few days. It is so wonderful how God seems to have spread different fruits through their own SEASON so that everything is not ripe all at once. This gives us a chance to enjoy the freshness of each kind. It was the cherries we enjoyed picking and eating over a month ago and there will be other varieties of apples becoming ripe in the early Fall.
Solomon stated. . .
"To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and A WORD IN SEASON, HOW GOOD IT IS!" (Proverbs 15:23 ESV)
Though God has provided a variety of sweet fruits for us to enjoy, the fruit Solomon mentioned is that which we provide. How IN SEASON (appropriate and timely) are our words as we interact with others? Are they like the pear my wife gave me a taste of that made me desire more? Are they beneficial to the situation of the moment? Is the time "ripe" for them to be used? Just as unripe fruit can leave a bad or sour taste in the mouth, so it is with poor timing in our speech. But "how good" it is when we wisely consider and use words that are IN SEASON for the moment in which they are spoken. May our words be as timely as the fresh fruit God has provided.
Have a great day PROVIDING GOD'S INTENDED FRUIT OF THE LIPS!

Give It Some Thought!
Daily we are confronted with decisions regarding the direction of our life. From various individuals and sources we are encouraged to accept "their" view and go "their" way. We are even faced with fine sounding reasoning for why we should move a certain direction. Even Paul drew attention to those who "by smooth talk and flattery" deceive the naïve. (Romans 16:18)
Solomon advised. . .
"The simple believes everything, but THE PRUDENT GIVES THOUGHT TO HIS STEPS." (Proverbs 14:15 ESV)
The "simple" are the naïve or gullible. They are those who are easily influenced. The "prudent" are the sensible who give some thought to what is being said. Which are we?
Living in the information age there is a wealth of information available at the click of a mouse. We are also bombarded with a variety of opinions on numerous subjects through various media: television, radio, newspaper, etc. Much of the information may at first seem to sound fine, but where does it ultimately lead? A quick internet search on almost any given subject may bring up volumes of information, all of which may not be reliable.
How often have we been exhorted to not believe everything we hear or read. Even those at Berea were complimented for making certain what they accepted from Paul was true. (Acts 17:10-11) They examined or searched "the SCRIPTURES DAILY", making sure what Paul and Silas were proclaiming fit with the rest of what God had declared. DAILY time in the SCRIPTURES will also help us sort through the life ideologies that come our way. The words of people are not always completely trustworthy. However, that is not the case with God "Who cannot lie." (Titus 1:2) Using the SCRIPTURES DAILY as the standard for comparison is the prudent way to guard the direction of our steps. That we can believe!
Have a great day CAUTIOUSLY COMPARING WITH GOD'S CRITERION!

Authority!
Authority is something that creates a real challenge for some. There are those who refuse to acknowledge authority and rebel against it. Then there are those who have authority and abuse it. Being under authority may not always provide all the freedom some desire and having authority may be difficult for some to handle, but Paul acknowledged even worldly authority had its purpose. (read Romans 13:1-7) Without recognizing various levels of authority, this world would be in greater chaos and conflict than it presently is.
Now, Paul had authority. He was chosen by the Lord (Acts 9:15) to be an Apostle; one sent out as an ambassador for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20) with the message of salvation in Him. However, even with that authority Paul remained humble and did not always exercise it as he could have. His desire was to use his apostolic authority in as beneficial a manner as he could. Perhaps this perspective is no better expressed than in his own words written toward the end of his second letter to the church at Corinth.
We read. . .
"(10) For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the AUTHORITY that the Lord has given me FOR BUILDING UP AND NOT FOR TEARING DOWN." (2 Corinthians 13:10 ESV)
What a remarkable focus Paul seemed to maintain. The authority he had was not self-serving, but Christ-centered. He had a heart for service to do whatever was necessary for the spiritual growth of others. If confrontation was necessary he would do it. He made that clear in this same letter. (2 Corinthians 10:1-2 and 13:2) However, Paul's greatest desire was always to BUILD UP others in the faith as he himself lived a life surrendered to the authority of Christ.
Whether we are under authority or find ourselves in a position of authority, let us also remember what it is to be all about. Our greatest goal is to point the attention of others to Christ Who is the Supreme Authority before whom all will someday bow. (i.e. 2 Corinthians 5:10) Let us therefore pray for all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1-2) that they may be willing to acknowledge the Will of God and thus make decisions that will truly provide what is best. Also, rather than joining in the tearing down of others, may we -- like Paul -- strive to do what we can to BUILD UP others through encouraging them in the Way of Christ.
Have a great day EXALTING CHRIST AND HIS WILL IN WHATEVER ROLE WE FIND OURSELVES!

What Are We Grasping?
It has been said, "Don't sweat the small stuff." However, how often do we focus and fuss over little things and forget the big stuff? In life we get caught up in the urgent and forget about the important. Jesus even accused the Scribes and Pharisees of majoring in minors and minoring in majors; being so careful of tithing even the smallest things while forgetting about "justice and mercy and faithfulness." (note Matthew 23:23) In this case Jesus acknowledged that both should have been important to observe. Then he accused them of "straining out a gnat" while "swallowing a camel." (Matthew 23:24)
The statement has been made "We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the sermon on the mount." [Omar N. Bradley] Sometimes through focusing in on the small things we loose sight of the greater picture. Yes, the atom is a significant aspect of God's creation, but what about the things that related to our day-to-day living? Those that listened to the many lessons from Jesus' sermon on the mount were amazed.
We read. . .
"(28) And, when Jesus finished these sayings, THE CROWDS WERE ASTONISHED at his teaching, (29) for HE WAS TEACHING THEM AS ONE WHO HAD AUTHORITY, and not as their scribes." (Matthew 7:28-29 ESV)
The principles Jesus authoritatively taught in the sermon on the mount were true and practical for daily living. They struck at the heart of the character God desires to be developed in our lives so that our actions will be characterized by His righteousness. We should not neglect the learning we can receive from the whole of Scripture. However, what a different world this would be if everyone at least followed the principles (Matthew 5-7) Jesus laid out on that occasion. May we allow them to make the Lord's intended difference in our own lives.
Have a great day LIVING THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT!

Cents And Sense!
There are some who think "more money" is always the solution. However, Paul pointed out how money -- more specifically the love of it -- is at the root of many problems. (1 Timothy 6:9-10) I recently read the accounts of several individuals who had won a great deal of money in lotteries. Though it may be astounding, these individuals soon found themselves in financial ruin. I have also read of some who consulted a financial advisor before they even claimed their winnings. However the former individuals referred to obviously did not know how to handle their new found wealth. They had more "cents" than "sense". Perhaps we wish such an opportunity would become ours. For me it would not be a chance, but nothing more than a miracle to win a lottery, because I have never bought a ticket. Still, I have thought of what I might do with such wealth.
Solomon advised. . .
"(13) Blessed is the one who finds WISDOM, and the one who gets UNDERSTANDING, (14) for THE GAIN FROM HER IS BETTER THAN GAIN FROM SILVER AND HER PROFIT BETTER THAN GOLD. (15) She is MORE PRECIOUS than jewels, and NOTHING you desire CAN COMPARE with her." (Proverbs 3:13-15 ESV)
Having "cents" with no "sense" is not good! Before we desire the "cents" we need to seek the "sense" needed in living a life that glorifies God and truly brings lasting benefit to us. It is not really a matter of thinking what we would do with more, but what are we presently doing with what we already have! If we are not handling that well, why do we think we would really do better with more? The truly wealthy ones are those who have more "sense" than "cents". May we seek the WISDOM of God as the greater riches to possess. Then we will be prepared to be good stewards of whatever else has been placed in our hands.
Have a great day ACQUIRING THE PRECIOUS WEALTH OF WISDOM!

Success!
Yesterday, the quotation on my perpetual daily calendar was: "Expecting success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven't planted." Now, it is true I must guard against the attitude that all my success is the result of my own efforts, strength, and wisdom. In ministry I have experienced harvesting where others had planted and I trust others will harvest where I have planted (note John 4:37-38) while at the same time recognizing whatever growth comes from my LABORS in the Lord is by the increase God provides. (note 1 Corinthians 3:6-7) Still, there is PERSONAL EFFORT to be put forth. Physically or spiritually I cannot expect harvest without LABOR.
Solomon stated. . .
"The soul of THE SLUGGARD craves and gets nothing, while the soul of THE DILIGENT is richly supplied." (Proverbs 13:4 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads: "Lazy people want much but get little, but those who WORK HARD will prosper and be satisfied." [NLT, © 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]
There are those who want more, but are not willing to put forth the EFFORT to get it. They want it handed to them. Some even appear to think it is owed them; always looking for the next handout. Consider the birds. Though they do not sow, reap, nor gather into barns, Jesus said God feeds them. (Matthew 7:26) This was an illustration used as Jesus exhorted away from anxiety or worry on our part. However, He did not say God dropped their food into their nests. As we observe the birds we recognize their DILIGENCE in finding and getting the food God provides.
Even when the LABORS are difficult, work that is worthwhile brings benefit and satisfaction. The same is true spiritually. May we find the personal pleasure and profit in everything we do as we seek to glorify God and fulfill His purposes in this realm. The "U" in "success" may only be one letter of seven, but it is still significant in its reality. Let us not neglect the involvement of "YOU" in the labors of life. As we seek success both physically and spiritually, let us thank God and praise Him for His great part as we remember the need for DILIGENCE on our part.
Have a great day FULFILLING OUR ROLE TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY!

Be Not Held Back!
When students do not put forth a significant enough amount of effort into their studies, they may find themselves having to either repeat a class or maybe even a whole grade. Being held back, graduation and the things that follow are put further away. There is a certain sense of personal responsibility that must be exercised in gaining a good education. Utilizing study time as it is available and turning in assignments on time -- rather than goofing off or simply not paying enough attention in class -- is what is necessary for growing intellectually and becoming prepared for being a contributing member of society. What a thing to talk about as the school year has only just begun? Actually it is better to be focused on now than later!
Is the expectation any less when it comes to our spiritual growth and how we become contributing members to the Lord's purposes and work? Though we all may not grow physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually at the same pace, growth is still anticipated. This was the view of the Hebrew writer toward those to whom he addressed his letter.
We read. . .
"(12) For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to TEACH YOU AGAIN THE BASIC PRINCIPLES of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, (13) for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. (14) But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their POWERS OF DISCERNMENT TRAINED BY CONSTANT PRACTICE to distinguish good from evil." (Hebrews 5:12-14 ESV)
Though some of these individuals had been Christians long enough that they should have been ready to teach others, they were being held back by the need to go over "basic principles" of the teaching again. They had not matured as they should have. Just as it is physically, so spiritually we progress bit-by-bit as we continue to seek to learn more.
Let us pay close attention to what God is trying to reveal in His Word. Let us also share what we know with others, for in so doing it imbeds it more in our own minds. As one plus one equals two is basic though still relevant to even higher more complex mathematics, the basic principles of the teachings of Jesus remain true and should never be forgotten. However, we need to continue building our faith and knowledge on them. May we accept the personal responsibility for spiritual growth, understanding it is a life education of eternal significance from which we do not want to be held back!
Have a great day PREPARING FOR GRADUATION INTO ETERNITY!

Joining The Chorus!
I love music. I love to play and I love to sing. I also love to listen. Most of the time there seems to be a song or music going through my mind. There are times when the words of a hymn will seem to well up from deep within me. Such can be powerful. It can be so moving. Sometimes when listening I even feel moved to join in.
Handel's wonderful work, "The Messiah", was written in 1741-1742 and was first performed in Dublin in 1742. When it was first performed in London (March 23, 1743), the king was present in the large audience. Upon reaching the movement of the "Hallelujah Chorus", everyone was so deeply moved by the words "For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth" that everyone -- including the king -- sprang to their feet and remained standing through the entire chorus. Thus began a custom still followed today whenever that chorus is performed. The "King of kings, and Lord of lords" is to receive the chorus of praise. HALLELUJAH!
John recorded a heavenly scene in the Revelation where we read. . .
"(1) After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of A GREAT MULTITUDE IN HEAVEN, crying out, 'HALLELUJAH! SALVATION AND GLORY AND POWER BELONG TO OUR GOD, . . . (4) And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who was seated on the throne, saying, "AMEN. HALLELUJAH!" (5) And from the throne came a voice saying, 'Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great.' (6) Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of A GREAT MULTITUDE, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, 'HALLELUJAH! FOR THE LORD OUR GOD THE ALMIGHTY REIGNS. (7) Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; (8) it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure' -- for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints." (Revelation 19:1 & 4-8 ESV)
In view of our Lord Jesus Christ, are we MOVED TO STAND with Him and for Him in life? Knowing the forgiveness and cleansing from sin His blood has made possible, are we moved to praise Him with our words and life? Knowing the eternal hope He came to provide, are we compelled to stand strong regardless of the challenges we might face in this life? With our focus on the One Who is the Sovereign "King of kings and Lord of Lords" (1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16), may our lives join in the chorus of being a LIVING HALLELUJAH to the One Who gave Himself for us so that we can be forever with Him.
Have a great day BEING LIVING PRAISE TO THE KING AND LORD OF OUR LIFE!

Son Of Whom?
We are able to gain much encouragement from one another, especially within the family of God. There is much help we can offer each other physically as well as emotionally and spiritually. Having good relationships with other Christians is key to maintaining good spiritual health. However, our focus must not merely rest there. As vital as our relationships with others may be, there is only so much we can do for each other.
In the psalms we read. . .
"(3) PUT NOT YOUR TRUST in princes, IN A SON OF MAN, IN WHOM THERE IS NO SALVATION. (4) When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish." (Psalm 146:3-4 ESV)
As significant as our relationships with others may be, there is only so much we can do for each other. The help and hope we can offer to each other is limited by the years we have in this life. It is also limited by our humanness. Though we ought to develop trustworthy relationships, there must still be a trust beyond those relationships.
When Peter and John were brought before the Jewish council, they drew the attention to Jesus as follows:
"(11) This JESUS is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. (12) And THERE IS SALVATION IN NO ONE ELSE, for there is NO OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN GIVEN AMONG MEN BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED." (Acts 4:11-12 ESV)
In what son have we placed our greatest trust? It is not merely with a "son of man" (or daughter of man), but to THE SON OF GOD we need to look when it comes to our salvation. The Lord is eternal. Therefore His plans are eternal, the hope He offers is eternal, and the salvation He provides is eternal. He will always be around to give what He came to provide. May our utmost trust rest in Him!
Have a great day WITH GOD'S SON BEING THE ONE!

Whose Rules?
A child growing up thinks about his or her toys when other children are in the room and may not be ready to share because they are called, "MINE!" When it comes to playing one of their games we might hear, "It's MY game and if you don't like playing by MY rules, then you can go home." Isn't it wonderful that such attitudes are outgrown as we all get older? Unfortunately the reality is such a focus often remains and becomes attached to things of greater significance than games or toys. How often have we heard someone say, "It's MY LIFE and I'm going to live it MY WAY!"?
When it comes to rules, what benefit do they provide? For one thing they put everyone on the same page as far as expectations. Rules provide consistency for fairness. Rules also direct toward an intended outcome. There are many areas of LIFE where rules need to be followed. This is simply understood, such as in an aspect of LIFE Paul mentioned in his second letter to Timothy where we read. . .
"AN ATHLETE is not crowned unless he COMPETES ACCORDING TO THE RULES." (2 Timothy 2:5 ESV)
For the athlete to fail to follow the rules, they will find themselves being disqualified from the competition. The rules apply. No player is exempt. The expectation is for the rules to be followed.
In the psalms we read. . .
"(155) Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes. (156) Great is your mercy, O LORD; GIVE ME LIFE ACCORDING TO YOUR RULES." (Psalm 119:155-156 ESV)
Some refer to our existence as being involved in the "game of life." Should that be expected without any rules? And who should be considered in the right to establish those rules? The players or the "game" Designer? God brought life into existence with His purposes and ultimate goal in mind. He desires to have a relationship with us and to eventually bring us into His eternal presence. What I want does not always lead that direction. What I want does not always have the best interests of others in mind. It is what GOD WANTS that puts us all on an equal playing level, serves to bring mutual benefit, and will ultimately get us to where HE WANTS us!
Let us continue to live LIFE according to HIS RULES. God has put together a plan so we can know what to expect of Him and where He wants us. Paul urged the Corinthians to run to win. (1 Corinthians 9:24) May we find LIFE'S greatest blessing as it is lived according to the rules of LIFE as set forth by God!
Have a great day WINNING AT LIFE BY GOD'S RULES!

In Any Language!
Though the words may not be understood because the language spoken is different, a cry is still understood. Though some may turn and look the other way, others may be drawn by compassion and understanding even though any spoken words would not be understood. It is the same with the smile of a foreigner, even though any words would fail to communicate. This would also be true of an embrace or an extended helping hand. There are more ways for a message or truth to be conveyed than in words; ways in which understanding occurs regardless of the language spoken by the one who perceives.
This is also true with THE POWER AND WORKS OF GOD. There are ways in which He has revealed Himself other than in the language of words. The works of His hand speaks volumes about His wisdom and power in a way to draw our attention to Him.
The Psalmist wrote. . .
"(1) The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (2) Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. (3) THERE IS NO SPEECH, NOR ARE THERE WORDS, WHOSE VOICE IS NOT HEARD. (4) Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun," (Psalm 19:1-4 ESV)
Regardless of culture, language, generation, etc., God seeks to reveal Himself and He is understood by those who are willing to listen and accept. Just look around and listen to what CREATION IS TELLING YOU ABOUT ITS CREATOR. Acknowledge the wisdom. Consider the power. Note the order. Oh, what a marvelous God we serve!
Have a great day UNDERSTANDING THE LANGUAGE OF CREATION!

Enriched Living!
Solomon noted. . .
"(24) One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want." (Proverbs 11:24 ESV)
Is it strange that such would be the case? The contrast is between the giver and the hoarder; a difference between a generous spirit and a stingy one. In one's GENEROSITY they find BLESSING though it may come in various ways. Do we view what we posses merely in terms of our own needs, or also the needs of others? Have we experienced the BLESSING that comes in helping meet other's needs? As Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus, he noted that earning an income through work is not only for our own needs, but also so that we will have something to share. (Ephesians 4:28) Therefore we should understand that having is not merely about our own selves.
Solomon went on to state. . .
"(25) Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered." (Proverbs 11:25 ESV)
Today we hear the expression, "What goes around comes around." Generally speaking, that is very true. Though OUR GIVING should not be with a view toward repayment, mutual benefit is usually ultimately the outcome. Someone has said, "It is in spending oneself that one becomes rich." [source: "1600 Squibs And Quips", compile by E. C. McKenzie] Paul encouraged Timothy to exhort the wealthy "to be RICH IN GOOD WORKS, to be generous and ready to share" (1 Timothy 6:18), for in so doing they would gain life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:19) By enriching the lives of others through the GIVING of ourselves and what we possess, we will ourselves find enrichment through the relationships we develop and the blessing God brings to our lives as well. May we maintain such a view beyond ourselves.
Have a great day ENJOYING THE BLESSING OF A GENEROUS SPIRIT!

A Model!
There are many who obsess over their looks. Hair gel or spray, name brand clothing, closely watched diets, muscle building and other exercise, etc.; all with an aim at being physically ATTRACTIVE. Honestly consider how much time you yourself spend in front of the mirror getting ready to go out and be seen by your peers. As you glance through magazines, is there a longing to have the physique or figure of the models pictured there? Though there is nothing wrong with trying to look your best, is there proper balance with regard to other aspects of your life?
The reality is there is only so much we can do with that with which we are born. No matter how hard some of us try we might never make it as a fashion model. However, there is an ATTRACTIVENESS we can and should strive toward.
In Paul's letter to Titus he exhorted. . .
"Show yourself in all respects to BE A MODEL OF GOOD WORKS, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity," (Titus 2:7 ESV)
Living needs to be more about CHARACTER than merely about physical ATTRACTIVENESS. I have met some nice looking people in my lifetime who were not very ATTRACTIVE because of ugly behavior. Because of their attitudes and actions, people were not drawn toward them, at least not for very long. What this world really needs more of is those willing to be "a model of good works"; the works God desires to be a part of our life due to the GODLY CHARACTER being developed within. Peter urged wives toward such "imperishable beauty" rather than that which was merely external. (1 Peter 3:4) Therefore, in this sense every one of us can be a model with an ATTRACTIVENESS that is precious in the sight of God and beneficial to others around us. Is there an anymore exquisite brand name adornment than that which bears the Name of God? May His label mark the manner in which we conduct our lives so that others will be drawn toward Him.
Have a great day LOOKING GOOD GOD'S WAY!

A Source Of Comfort!
In this realm we find promises made that are frequently broken. Sometimes those promises are broken because they were not seriously made while other times people may promise things that were not within their power to fulfill. However, that is not the way it is with the promises of God. This reality was a source of comfort to the psalmist who wrote. . .
"(49) Remember your word to your servant, in which you have made me hope. (50) This is my comfort in my affliction, that YOUR PROMISE GIVES ME LIFE." (Psalm 119:49-50 ESV)
God's word (vs.49), which He had already spoken, was fully viewed in the faith God would fulfill it. Does what God has declared in the past have the same impact on our view regarding LIFE presently and the hope of ETERNAL LIFE to come? With our life in the hands of God, we should find comfort in knowing that regardless of the challenges we may face presently, it is not the end. God still holds for us the promise of LIFE! And knowing the ETERNAL LIFE of which He assures us, we can LIVE even now with courage in the face of affliction and trials.
Remembering "the promises of God find their yes" in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20 ESV), note what Paul stated in his second letter to Timothy.
"(8) Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, (9) who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, (10) and which now has been manifested THROUGH THE APPEARING OF OUR SAVIOR CHRIST JESUS, WHO ABOLISHED DEATH AND BROUGHT LIFE AND IMMORTALITY TO LIGHT THROUGH THE GOSPEL," (2 Timothy 1:8-10 ESV)
Like the psalmist, Paul found courage to press on even in the face of trials (prison and suffering for the gospel) because of the message of LIFE AND IMMORTALITY brought to light in Christ. We each may face some extremely challenging situations in life, but they will pass. In Christ we have LIFE! In Christ we have the assurance of LIFE ETERNAL! In Christ we have a resounding "yes" that God will fulfill all He has said He would. May all His promises inspire us to LIVE confidently and joyfully as we look forward to the eternity He has in store for us.
Have a great day COMFORTED THROUGH CONFIDENCE IN GOD'S PROMISES!

About The Stuff?
While my wife and I were recently camping, we were looking over all the camping gear we have collected over the years with a sense of appreciative satisfaction. I like to set up a comfortable campsite: our dining room (canopy over the picnic table), our kitchen (another canopy over the grill, camp stove, and table where we wash out dishes), and bedroom (our tent). As we purchased a post (one that attaches to a table or sticks into the ground) that has a little shelf for spices, a rod for a roll of paper towels, an upper hanger for a lantern, bracket for a trash bag, and hangers for other items, I jokingly commented to my wife that "Camping is all about the stuff." This item really rounded out our "kitchen" setup. We have a daughter-in-law who even commented once that she liked to camp with us because we have all the stuff. Still, what we enjoyed most about our camping experience was for my wife and I to simply do some much needed relaxing together.
Many feel blessed because of all the "stuff" they have. Perhaps we are sometimes guilty of taking how TRULY BLESSED we are for granted. Most of us have much more than we really need. However, among those "things" what really marks their value? If some of them disappeared today, though we might feel bad about the loss, how bad would our life really be without them? Sometimes it is through loss that people come to grips with that which truly holds the greatest value. Their house burns down and they are thankful everyone got out safely as they say, "We can replace the stuff." Still, what marks the greater focus in our life? Is it "all about the stuff" or do we recognize the REAL BLESSINGS?
One of the psalmists revealed his discernment when he wrote. . .
"(36) INCLINE MY HEART TO YOUR TESTIMONIES, and not to selfish gain! (37) Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and GIVE ME LIFE IN YOUR WAYS." (Psalm 119:36-37 ESV)
The psalmist's desire was for his heart to not be leaning toward selfish gain or have his eyes drawn to things of no value; something that marks the life pursuit of many today. His life was not "all about the stuff", but his desire was focused on being drawn toward God's Ways (His testimonies or commands) in which the TRUE BLESSING OF LIFE is found. How many have and are committing the blunder of laying up treasure for themselves and not being "rich toward God." (Luke 12:21) When THEIR LIFE is required of them (Luke 12:20), what then? May we, like the psalmist, not allow the "stuff" to distract us from THE LIFE that comes by following God. Instead of life being "all about the stuff", let us enjoy the TRUE BLESSING of life in His Ways!
Have a great day ENJOYING LIFE THAT IS ALL ABOUT GOD!

Consumed!
For some of you school has already begun while for others you are still enjoying the last few days of summer vacation. What consumed your thinking and time during the summer break? Perhaps you enjoyed the break from a rigid schedule and the opportunity to do what you wanted to do when you wanted to do it. With the beginning of school there are once again many things to consume the mind and the time whether it be what is really desired or not. With the beginning of the school schedule the mind may become consumed with A LONGING for leisure time again. Perhaps you enjoyed reading what you really wanted to read rather than having to focus on what you would be tested on. However, isn't there A LONGING that should always be a part of our life because of the reality there is an accounting of life with which we will be faced?
Every time I read through Psalm 119, I seem to be captivated by verses that may not have struck me before. Recently reading through this chapter again I was struck by the following.
"MY SOUL IS CONSUMED WITH LONGING FOR YOUR RULES AT ALL TIMES." (Psalm 119:20 ESV)
To be consumed is to have the mind or attention completely drawn to something. Perhaps that consuming focus could be described as a craving, hungering, or thirsting after. There is much in this world that begs for our attention. However, what is the consuming focus for our daily life? Are we truly consumed by a LONGING FOR GOD'S WILL "at all times"? To possess such A LONGING deep within -- as the psalmist expressed -- would be to have a desire to always be pleasing to God. Not now and then, but "at all times"! Not when it is convenient or does not mess with our own plans, but always! Let it consume the longing when preparing for school, heading out for extracurricular activities, going on a date, getting together with friends, etc.
Knowing that all the commands of God are good and have our ultimate best in mind, keeping them continually in mind will help bring life's actions and choices into compliance with them. May our lives be continually marked by being "consumed with LONGING" for the Will of God to be the will of our life. Let that be the longing we continually feed so that we will be blessed with the spiritual health God desires for us to possess.
Have a great day WITH PLEASING GOD OUR CONSUMING DESIRE!
