We Can Rejoice Because. . . ! (part 1 of 3)

At the onset of suffering and trials, we might struggle in an attempt to see anything over which we could rejoice. But Paul pointed out it is what those trials produce in our life that gives us cause for rejoicing. The first of three things Paul specifically mentioned here is. . .

"(3) More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, KNOWING THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES ENDURANCE," ( Romans 5:3 ESV)

I did not build up my walking ENDURANCE by sitting around, but rather by walking faster and further. I stuck with it. Through trials we learn ENDURANCE. Through testing we BECOME STRONGER. Through difficulties we GROW AND MATURE. And James stated the same thing. ( James 1:2-3) The literal idea is that of "abiding under" the trials. [The Greek word used by Paul, "hupomeno", means to abide under or bear up courageously. It is a strengthened form of "meno" (to abide or endure). Source: W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] We DEVELOP SPIRITUAL STAMINA. Just like a tree is strengthened as it resists the power of the wind and is able to grow and stand tall -- so it is with us as we persevere. We GAIN STRENGTH through the testing of trials of various kinds. Then as we continue to stand, we gain encouragement from the strength we see has been added to our life.

A recent quote on my daily calendar stated: "Dear Lord, are my troubles really opportunities in disguise? Help me to see beyond these painful times and to trust in Your guidance. Amen"

Without the trials we would not be ABLE TO GROW in such a way. May we trust that God knows what He is doing as we look to Him for continued strength.
