Kneel In Zeal!
We may be zealous about many things. In Paul's letter to Titus he encouraged a zeal for good works. (Titus 2:14) Sometimes zeal is misdirected, as it was with Paul when he was devoting his energies to the persecuting of the church (Philippians 3:6) prior to his becoming a Christian and turning those same energies into building it up. In his letter to the church at Rome Paul referred to those who had "a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge." (Romans 10:2 ESV) Therefore the focus of our zeal ought to be given careful consideration.
Though we may often equate zealousness with great action, there is a need for zeal that can also be associated with our kneeling before God. In part of the Lord's exhortation to the church at Laodicea we read. . .
"(19) Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so BE ZEALOUS AND REPENT." (Revelation 3:19 ESV)
Both of these words -- "zealous" and "repent" -- are in the Greek imperative. That means they are of necessity. The Greek word translated "zealous" is in the present tense, but the word "REPENT" is in the aorist (a Greek past tense) active, which seems to imply the repenting being once for all done. It is to have turned to remain turned toward the Will of God. This zealousness and REPENTANCE was in contrast to the indifference of which the church at Laodicea was accused.
A zeal for REPENTANCE! Zealousness for turning the life around and back toward God! Is that not a focus of utmost importance regarding the zeal in life? Though some have a zeal that takes them away from God, an eager zealousness to turn our life around -- to REPENT -- when we see it is going the wrong direction is all about continuing to move toward God and His Will.
As we humbly kneel before God, let us honestly acknowledge the changes still in need of being made. Maintaining a zeal for REPENTANCE will result in allowing us to rise up and move onward in other zealous activity to His glory and praise.
Have a great day BLESSED BY THE DIFFERENCE PROPERLY PLACED ZEAL MAKES!

If You Can?
"Our Heavenly Father. We thank You for Your greatness and mindfulness of everything that goes on in our lives. Now, I don't think You will be able to work this out, but this is my prayerful request. . . ."
Can we imagine praying such a prayer? Might we wonder where is the faith in God in such phrasing? Perhaps we can hear the response of Jesus to the man who asked if He could do anything, to have compassion on them and help them. Jesus responded, "If you can! All things are possible for one who believes." (Mark 9:23 ESV) I must admit I find myself sharing this father's response when he said, "I believe; help my unbelief." (Mark 9:24) I do have faith, but I am still growing in it as well.
After Herod had James the brother of John put to death, seeing it had pleased the Jews he then had Peter placed in prison with the intent of bringing him out to the people after the Passover. (Acts 12:1-4) While Peter was imprisoned the church was EARNESTLY PRAYING FOR HIM. (Acts 12:5) During the night God sent an angel to rescue Peter, leading him out of the prison and to the gate leading into the city. (Acts 12:6-11) Peter then went to where brethren were gathered together praying. However, what was their response to Peter's coming? Rhoda -- the one who responded to his knock at the door -- got so excited she ran to tell the others without bothering to open it for Peter.
Note the response of those who had been praying.
"(15) They said to her, 'YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND.' But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, 'IT IS HIS ANGEL!' (16) But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, THEY SAW HIM AND WERE AMAZED." (Acts 12:15-16 ESV)
Every time I read that I wonder, "Well, what was it you were praying for?" Their responses to Rhoda seemed to indicate even though they were praying for Peter, they did not think it possible for Peter to have been delivered from the prison! It just couldn't have been Peter at the door!
Certainly we may not always know what God's Will is or the exact way in which He might work out a particular situation, but when we pray DO WE TRUST GOD TO ACT? If not, why pray? Are we ever SURPRISED when God does work things out as we had hoped or even beyond our expectations? Have we ever merely thought, "Oh, what a coincidence."? I wouldn't suggest that we cease to be "WOWED" by God, but when we do see our prayers answered, let us REJOICE AND PRAISE HIM for the marvelous ways He fulfills His Will on our behalf. We may not always be spared in the midst of life's challenges, but we will ultimately be delivered from this earthly sphere into His eternal realm. May He forever be praised by our life and our words.
Have a great day GROWING IN STEADFAST TRUST IN HIS POWER!

What Seems May Not Be!
How many times have people said, "It seems alright to me." and then led others into something that did not end so well? Have we experienced this ourselves? There are many things in life that may seem right at first, but after closer consideration may be found to be not good at all.
Solomon stated. . .
"(12) There is a way that SEEMS RIGHT to a man, but ITS END IS THE WAY TO DEATH." (Proverbs 14:12 ESV)
This was important enough that it was repeated.
"(25) There is a way that SEEMS RIGHT to a man, but ITS END IS THE WAY TO DEATH." (Proverbs 16:25 ESV)
Some have been deceived by others or have become self-deceived into accepting LIFE DIRECTION that is not right. This is reflected in the choice of habits, lifestyles, and activities in which they engage. Many who walk in worldly ways have come to believe what they are doing is right and in pleasing themselves are blinded to the harm they are actually bringing upon themselves or even others around them. The death they are dying (physically, spiritually, or both) may be a slow one, but it is the end of the way in which they are walking. It is possible to even involve oneself in activities directly opposed to God's Will while thinking service is being done for Him. (i.e. John 16:2) Such marked the life of Saul while he persecuted the church. (Acts 26:9-11; Philippians 3:6)
Solomon also encouraged. . .
"(28) In the PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS IS LIFE, and in its pathway there is NO DEATH." (Proverbs 12:28 ESV)
Decisions based upon what merely "seems right" to us is not always a safe standard. We must remain open to what GOD HAS DECLARED TO BE RIGHT! Anytime we begin to think we are smart enough in and of ourselves, we have begun to head down the wrong road. It is GOD'S WISDOM we must continually look to in order to make certain we are on the PATHWAY OF LIFE.
Have a great day WALKING TO GOD'S RIGHT!

Asking God!
Perhaps we at times find ourselves struggling in prayer. Even Jesus' disciples asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." (Luke 11:1) We can learn from reading (or listening to) the prayers of godly individuals. Therefore we should be thankful for some of the prayers that have been recorded in Scripture. I don't mean so we can pray those exact prayers, but to see how godly individuals (including our Lord Himself, as we have several of His own preserved in Scripture) in confident faith approached the Heavenly Father.
When we ask God something in prayer, what characterizes our approach? Is it because we feel we have great faith? Is it because we believe we are living a pretty righteous life? Is it because we think God owes us a favor? What is the basis on which we anticipate God's response?
In a prayer from God's faithful servant Daniel we read. . .
"(18) O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by your name. For WE DO NOT PRESENT OUR PLEAS BEFORE YOU BECAUSE OF OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS, BUT BECAUSE OF YOUR GREAT MERCY." (Daniel 9:18 ESV)
Daniel knew what he asked was not deserved. His humble request was based on his knowledge of God's MERCIFUL character. To know how MERCIFUL GOD IS helps us understand we can approach Him in prayer with the cares of our life. However, our asking should be with a great deal of humility coupled with the utmost desire for His Will to be done. God, in His great wisdom, will work things out not always the way we think, but the way that is best. Praise God for HIS MERCIFUL LOVE for us all! That is what makes Him approachable.
Have a great day HUMBLY APPRECIATING GOD'S APPROACHABLENESS!

"The House That ______ Built!"
When I walk past a house, it does not call out to me, "Hey, look at me!" If I walk through its cozy rooms or spacious living areas it does not boast, "See how wonderful I have made myself." I know the reality is that the house was designed and then built and furnished by someone. The house did not come into existence and become a magnificent dwelling all on its own. It is the DESIGNER AND BUILDER who would do the boasting because they deserve the credit for what has become.
In reference to God's people united in Christ, the Hebrew writer stated. . .
"(3) For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses -- as much more glory as THE BUILDER OF A HOUSE HAS MORE HONOR THAN THE HOUSE ITSELF. (4) (For every house is built by someone, but the BUILDER OF ALL THINGS IS GOD.) (5) Now Moses was faithful in all GOD'S HOUSE as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, (6) but Christ is faithful over GOD'S HOUSE as a son. And WE ARE HIS HOUSE if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope." (Hebrews 3:3-6 ESV)
There is no room to boast in what our life has become. Like Paul we need to humbly admit "BY THE GRACE OF GOD I AM WHAT I AM." (1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV) We may boast about the hope that is ours, but the glory belongs to the One Who has provided it. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Let us live each day in a manner in which those around us will ultimately notice we are A WORK OF THE HANDS OF GOD. We are HIS HOUSE. May each room of our life reflect the tastes of God that He may receive the honor He deserves. There is no better "DESIGN TEAM" than the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Have a great day HONORING GOD AS HIS HOUSE!

Significant Association!
After listing King David's military commanders, leaders of the tribes, and all the stewards of his property, we read of these others of association with him:
"(32) Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor, being a man of understanding and a scribe. He and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni attended the king's sons. (33) Ahithophel was the king's counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend. (34) Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king's army." (1 Chronicles 27:32-34 ESV)
Then in association with King Solomon we read. . .
"(1) King Solomon was king over all Israel, (2) and these were his high officials: Azariah the son of Zadok was the priest; (3) Elihoreph and Ahijah the sons of Shisha were secretaries; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; (4) Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the army; Zadok and Abiathar were priests; (5) Azariah the son of Nathan was over the officers; Zabud the son of Nathan was priest and king's friend; (6) Ahishar was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram the son of Abda was in charge of the forced labor." (1 Kings 4:1-6 ESV)
Among those listed in association with King David and King Solomon we find attendants, commanders, counselors, priests, secretaries, and overseers of the palace and workers. Perhaps none of those designations surprise us. Being surrounded by those keeping records, overseeing various aspects of the king's affairs, offering counsel and even spiritual direction are important for someone in high position. However, there is one designation that may seem somewhat different to be listed among a king's officials yet one of great significance. Hushai the Archite was King David's FRIEND and Zabud was not only a priest, but also King Solomon's FRIEND.
It can be lonely at the top. Even those in high places need FRIENDS; loyal associations and close confidantes that can be relied on for honest counsel and support even through the challenging times. Having such a FRIEND and being one should always be viewed as very significant. What a glorious connection that was for Hushai and Zabud, being friends of kings.
We should be careful of where we have allowed our closest sense of FRIENDSHIP to develop. James pointed out "that FRIENDSHIP with the world is enmity [hostility] toward God." (James 4:4) James also noted Abraham as being called a FRIEND of God because of his belief. (James 2:23)
Jesus told the disciples. . .
"(14) YOU ARE MY FRIENDS IF YOU DO WHAT I COMMAND YOU." (John 15:14 ESV)
To be a FRIEND OF KING JESUS should be very significant to us. Though He has no need of our counsel, He desires our faithfulness as HIS FRIEND. Could we have any better FRIEND than Jesus? May we rejoice in the privilege of being His!
Have a great day BEING A LOYAL FRIEND OF THE KING ETERNAL!

A Life Worth Living!
If we asked others what they would consider a life worth living, we would most likely receive a variety of responses. These responses might run the extreme from having everything desired to possessing the kind of relationships that bring joy to life. Some might also desire more leisure time for self while others would acknowledge the value of ministering to the needs of others. People have desires for all kinds of pursuits. With all the things that could come to mind in relation to "a life worth living" -- not all of which might necessarily be bad -- is there a FOUNDATIONAL FOCUS that can aid in bringing all other things into proper perspective? I believe Peter addressed the resolve that ought to be ours.
We read. . .
"(1) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, (2) so as to LIVE FOR THE REST OF THE TIME IN THE FLESH no longer for human passions but FOR THE WILL OF GOD." (1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV)
Jesus had an attitude that prompted Him to endure what needed to be endured on our behalf. While some live merely for pleasure, others have found the great pleasure of SEEKING TO PLEASE GOD. If our "time in the flesh" is spent for THE DOING OF HIS WILL, would that not be the ultimate life worth living? That is the life that brings the greatest joy and peace even in this realm. It is the pursuit that wards off regret. It is also the only life associated with the godliness that holds promise for the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:8) A life that takes us anywhere but to God would actually be a wasted one. (i.e. Matthew 16:26)
Let us remain focused on the truest life worth living that ultimately transcends this realm into a blessed eternity with God. Living life now FOR HIM maintains the relationship that provides eternal life WITH HIM!
Have a great day KNOWING THE TRULY WONDERFUL LIFE!

An Essence Of Wisdom!
How do we know when people have made foolish choices? Usually either they get hurt themselves or someone else does. Perhaps we have found ourselves at either end at times. Certainly we are prone to make mistakes because we are imperfect people. We unfortunately sometimes act or speak before thinking. That reality should keep us humble and compel us to be a bit more merciful toward others. However, "But I didn't think!" is not a valid excuse. We should always remember to give consideration to what we do and say so that our life will both glorify God and be of benefit to those around us.
James asked and answered. . .
"(13) Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the MEEKNESS OF WISDOM." (James 3:13 ESV)
This could also be translated, "GENTLENESS OF WISDOM." "MEEKNESS" is power under control. The Greek word is one that was used for taming animals, such as bringing a stallion under control. It was at a time when Moses was spoken against by his sister and brother (Miriam and Aaron) that he was noted as being very MEEK, even more so than all others on the face of the earth. (Numbers 12:1-3) Though the position of Moses was spoken against, he did not angrily speak out against his siblings. Instead, in the "MEEKNESS OF WISDOM" he held his peace and it was God who acted on the situation. When God struck Miriam with leprosy, Moses then cried out to God on her behalf.
Some hold great pride in their position and knowledge. However, wisdom is not simply a matter of gaining knowledge, but rather the ability to GENTLY AND RIGHTLY APPLY it in our life activities. That is how one reveals they are "wise and understanding." Also, when one has misspoken or acted wrongly, it is again pride that can keep them from humbly admitting it. Often such is followed by misdirected anger; anger at others rather than at self.
Let us continually consider the conduct of our life and what it is revealing. Growing in the "MEEKNESS OF WISDOM" we will more often act and speak in a GENTLE and UNDERSTANDING manner. Thus our life will bring glory to the One Who has provided the wisdom and those around us can benefit from it.
Have a great day LIVING A "SHOW AND TELL" LIFE OF GODLY WISDOM!

Holding Back!
There are many things we may feel the inclination to do. There are urges that can well up from within us that beg to be satisfied. An expression out of the 1960's was, "If it feels good, do it." Even today there are many who exercise little (if any) RESTRAINT in the manner in which they live their lives. If they want it, they pursuit it. If it provides personal pleasure, they run after it. However, what is the actual cost of living merely for the pleasure of the moment?
Solomon noted. . .
"Where there is NO PROPHETIC VISION the people CAST OFF RESTRAINT, but BLESSED is he who KEEPS THE LAW." (Proverbs 29:18 ESV)
Note that the lack of RESTRAINT is mentioned in direct opposition to BEING BLESSED. The lack of RESTRAINT actually brings bondage to sin, because it is the inclinations of the flesh that have taken control of the life. On the other hand, while remaining within the boundaries of God's commands, freedom is actually found and a great burden is lifted. Lack of RESTRAINT brings pain and regret. Living in the sphere of God's Will brings peace and life in its truest and most pleasurable sense because of the overflowing joy (2 Corinthians 7:4) and surpassing peace (Philippians 4:7) that become ours living in the favor of God.
John warned and encouraged. . .
"(9) EVERYONE WHO GOES ON AHEAD AND DOES NOT ABIDE IN THE TEACHING OF CHRIST, DOES NOT HAVE GOD. WHOEVER ABIDES IN THE TEACHING HAS BOTH THE FATHER AND THE SON." (2 John 9 ESV)
Without exercising RESTRAINT we will miss out on the BLESSINGS of God. Rather than going "on ahead" toward our own desires, ABIDING IN HIS TEACHING we have the ultimate blessing of "both the Father and the Son." May we seek God's strength and wisdom in reining in the desires of the flesh so as to remain in step with His Spirit. His Will will always bring about what is best for us.

Plans For Us!
Sometimes people try to make plans for others. If this is done by more than one person, those plans can end up in conflict with each other. Differing plans place the person for which the plans are made in the position of having to choose what plans they will allow to take place for them. An individual finding themselves in the middle of others developing opposing LIFE PLANS can feel agitated and torn as to which direction to go.
There is a sense in which knowing others have enough interest in our life to help develop a LIFE PLAN may make us feel good. However, to what end is that interest? Remember both God and the devil have plans for us and those plans are definitely in conflict with each other.
The Hebrew writer stated. . .
"(14) Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, HE himself likewise partook of the same things, that THROUGH DEATH HE MIGHT DESTROY THE ONE WHO HAS THE POWER OF DEATH, THAT IS, THE DEVIL, (15) and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery." (Hebrews 2:14-15 ESV)
The Hebrew writer was speaking of the contrasting work of Jesus and that of the devil. Between them, there are two plans with us in mind. The devil's plan is to separate us from God. That is done through drawing us into sin and ultimately into spiritual death. God's plan involved paving the way through Jesus for our return to Him. That is reconciliation. Death is separation from God, but in Christ we see the Divine power of God over death. Jesus had to come in the flesh in order to die and accomplish this plan on our behalf.
Though the devil may have thought he won a victory when Christ was placed in the tomb, his "power of death" was no match for the Creator, Sustainer, and Renewer of life. Let us remember the power Jesus came to destroy as we accept the LIFE PLAN of God that leads to life eternally with Him.

Offering Sacrifices! Yuck!
Often times I think of the Jews living under the Old Law, having to make those animal sacrifices again and again and again. Each sacrifice was to remind the Israelites that sin is not beautiful and is costly, as the life blood was drained from the animal that was then offered on an altar. YUCK! GROSS! I am glad that does not have to be a part of my routine on a daily, weekly, monthly, nor even on an annual basis. I am glad there was an end to that law (Romans 10:4) and we as Christians are not required by God to kill an animal and offer it to Him.
HOWEVER, there is a gift God wants us to give Him as a sacrifice. Paul mentioned it in his letter to the church at Rome where we read. . .
"I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to PRESENT YOUR BODIES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE, HOLY AND ACCEPTABLE TO GOD, which is your spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1 ESV)
Notice Paul did not say "dead" sacrifices, but rather "LIVING" sacrifices. This is not a gross offering, but rather is to be a BEAUTIFUL SACRIFICE. What we do with our lives is to be done as an offering of worship to God. And just like offerings under the Old Law, we don't just offer ourselves once, but we continue to offer ourselves to God in life on a daily basis.
As we continue to think about the great mercy God has extended to us, may we keep showing Him our appreciation by offering our life in continual service to Him -- for this "IS YOUR SPIRITUAL WORSHIP."
Have a great day LIVING LIFE ON THE ALTAR TO GOD!

Planned Spontaneity!
"Planned Spontaneity"! Do those two words not seem to go together? Wouldn't the planning take the spontaneity out of it? Being spontaneous seems to imply unplanned actions; things done on the spur of the moment. It relates more to impulse than it does to planning or scheduling. One might spontaneously break into song due to feeling a sudden sense of joy about something. Prayer may also be a spontaneous impulse brought on by a moment of crisis or even be one of thanksgiving at the sudden realization of how well something is working out. Our life may be dotted with many spontaneous moments.
However, "Planned Spontaneity"? Yes, "Planned Spontaneity"; actions linked to a plan to always be open and ready to assist others with even little things. Such actions may be very random, but still planned for in the sense of maintaining an attitude and vision that will create a natural impulse to respond when such situations arise.
Paul encouraged those at Galatia. . .
"(9) And let us NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)
Opportunities to do good and extend random acts of KINDNESS can arise any time and any place. These situations can prompt spontaneous action on our part. When we plan to keep our eyes open for such opportunities with a pre-made decision to act when they do arise, we may find ourselves not even thinking about what to do or if we should do it at the time. We will find ourselves just naturally stepping forward to seize the opportunity to serve in whatever capacity is needed. These actions of KINDNESS will simply become a very natural part of our Christian walk.
KINDNESS is a fruit of the Spirit. (Galatians 5:22) KINDNESS is also something we are to have "put on" (Colossians 3:12) as Christians. Therefore, if KINDNESS adorns us and is evident fruit of God's Spirit within us, random acts of KINDNESS throughout the day will simply be an extension of the godly essence of our being.
Let us plan for always being ready to respond in random acts of KINDNESS as we go about each day. Such actions -- big or small -- on our part can have a greater impact on others than we might realize. Perhaps their day has not been going well, and such actions will pick up their spirits. Also, with all the self-centeredness of this world, our actions may renew their trust in humanity. Therefore, let us keep the plan in mind to spontaneously respond to what is going on in the lives of those around us.
Have a great day RESPONDING TO LIFE'S SITUATIONS IN GOD GLORIFYING WAYS!

Faithful Works!
In David's trusting view of his relationship with God, he wrote. . .
"(7) Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. (8) The LORD WILL FULFILL HIS PURPOSE FOR ME; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. DO NOT FORSAKE THE WORK OF YOUR HANDS." (Psalm 138:7-8 ESV)
We can trust in God to fulfill his purposes. His track record is one of continually following through on what He has purposed to do and declared He would accomplish. Faithfulness is a part of God's unchanging essence. (note 2 Timothy 2:13) Therefore our hope for an eternal future with Him can securely rest on His faithfulness.
Though we may sometimes need a plan B or C as we set out to accomplish our goals, God only needs a plan A. The question is not whether or not God will accomplish His purposes, but rather will we choose to be A FAITHFUL PART of them? Though like the psalmist we seek for God to "not forsake the work of [His] hands", we must guard against ourselves -- a work of His hands -- forsaking Him and His Will! It is not God's faithfulness, but our own that can often be called into question!
God has let us know where He stands. The question is where are we standing in relation to His purposes? Let us resolve to appropriately keep His Name and Word above all else. (Psalm 138:2) May our life interests not rest merely on what we want, but rather on what God desires. The end result will ultimately be blessing we will truly want above all else!
Have a great day GENUINELY INTERESTED IN WHAT GOD IS DOING IN AND FOR US!

Choosing The Way!
Coasting along is easy. Going with the flow does not require much effort. It is trying to paddle upstream against the current that requires ENDURANCE AND RESOLVE. However, the GOOD LIFE is worth the effort. Simply drifting along, how can we know where we will end up? Though majority vote may pass legislation, that does not mean they are always right. So, simply going along with the crowd is not a wise principle for living our life. In fact, the direction of the masses may be reason enough to not follow! Before ever offering the reason to do something as "Well, everyone else is doing it", that very thing is worth some earnest consideration. Why? Because of what Jesus noted in His sermon on the mount.
Jesus clearly stated. . .
"(13) Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that LEADS TO LIFE, and those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14 ESV)
Jesus did not imply any other choice. Only two. And it was not the way chosen by the many that LEADS TO LIFE. Compared to the choice of the masses, it is the few who find it. Which way are we DILIGENTLY FOCUSED on following?
Note the way this passage reads in "The Message" translation.
"Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life -- to God! -- is vigorous and requires total attention." [Peterson, E. H. (© 2002). The Message: The Bible in contemporary language. Colorado Springs, Colo.: NavPress.]
Yes, there are all sorts of offers for the "GOOD LIFE" made by this world. However, Jesus is "the WAY, and the TRUTH, and the LIFE" and only access to the Father. (John 14:6) That may seem narrow, but that is how Jesus described the gate. (note also Acts 4:12 and John 10:7) Coming to Him and following in His Way, there are no shortcuts. As the Savior of the world, He merits our full attention as we seek to grow in allowing Him to be Lord of every aspect of our life. May we resolve to diligently focus on His Way and Will as we resist the world's flow to live the Lord's ABUNDANT LIFE (John 10:10) now and sweet ETERNAL LIFE with Him to come!
Have a great day GIVING CHRIST'S WAY TOTAL ATTENTION!

Beware The Hook!
Someone has said, "If you don't avoid the bait, you'll end up on the hook." If the theories of evolution were true, would not fish have evolved to the point of understanding the hook behind the free food dangling in the water? They see it. They want it. So they bite and the one holding the pole says, "Gotcha!"
Is this not also the picture of TEMPTATION? How often do people see how close they can get to TEMPTATION rather than trying to avoid it altogether? If we don't avoid the bait, we're likely to get hooked and the devil declares with delight, "Gotcha!"
James warned. . .
"(13) Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God,' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. (14) But each person is tempted when he is LURED AND ENTICED by his own desire. (15) Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death." (James 1:13-15 ESV)
The devil may be the one to dangle the TEMPTATION before us, but we are the ones who bite. He doesn't come along and jam the hook in our mouth. Do we understand what James described as the awful progression (or digression) of the movement deeper and deeper once "the lure" has done its work? Just like the fish that ends up on someone's plate, death (separation from God) is the ultimate end to which TEMPTATION can lead if we bite! TEMPTATION is all around us. The devil is on the prowl seeking to devour us. (1 Peter 5:8) He wants us on his plate! Let us not become his catch of the day!
James later exhorted. . .
"(7) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) DRAW NEAR TO GOD, AND HE WILL DRAW NEAR TO YOU. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:7-8 ESV)
Let us be wise in what to avoid even getting close to. Some things need not to be merely turned from, but run far away from! Let it be God to Whom we continue to be drawn closer and closer. In this way we will avoid becoming one of the devil's fish stories, leaving him to moan about another one that got away!
Have a great day REMAINING GOD'S CATCH!

Held Precious! (Part 9)
My wife and I made a promise to each other when we were married; that we would be faithful to each other. That is a commitment we hold very precious because of the love we had for each other then and continue to grow in as the years go by. We still mean what we said when our vows were recited to each other and it is a promise we intend to stick with!
In this world people promise many things which they don't always follow through on. Sometimes this is because what was promised is simply forgotten about. Then there are those who promise what they never really intended to follow through with. How sad that so many cannot be taken at their word. However, that is not the way it is with God. What He has DECLARED we can count on.
Speaking of God, Peter noted. . .
"(3) His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us HIS PRECIOUS and very great PROMISES, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire." (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)
The Greek word translated "precious" is the adjective "timios" which means "costly", therefore making reference to the costliness and value of GOD'S PROMISES. Those promises are also not merely great, but the Greek word "megista" means "greatest"! That is the kind of Giver (or Bestower) God is! The word "epaggelmata" translated "promise" is from "epaggelma", a word used in the strong sense of a DECLARATION.
How much are GOD'S PROMISES worth to us? Could we put a monetary value on them? Is the value not incalculable? Remember that those promises -- which all have their "Yes" in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20) -- have come by the cost of His life on the cross. Peter referred to GOD'S PROMISES as being "precious" and "very great", even to the end that we would share God's "divine nature". Mankind, having been initially created in His image (Genesis 1:26-27), through Christ we have the promise of that essence being renewed whereby we also escape the corruption of this world. Let us never lose sight of how great and precious GOD'S PROMISES are. May their greatness and preciousness cause us to remain always faithful to our relationship with Him.
Have a great day VALUING THE FACT GOD CAN ALWAYS BE TAKEN AT HIS WORD!

Held Precious! (Part 8)
Solomon declared. . .
"(15) There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the LIPS OF KNOWLEDGE ARE A PRECIOUS JEWEL." (Proverbs 20:15 ESV)
Yesterday we noted wisdom being more precious than jewels. Jewels of gold and costly stones may be worn to adorn arms, ears, and neck and be thought to enhance beauty. However, what comes from the LIPS when the mouth is opened can spoil all that. Wisdom exercised before opening the mouth is a sign of wisdom, thus enabling the LIPS to be used in a beautiful God glorifying way.
Was Solomon suggesting that LIPS OF KNOWLEDGE were not as abundant as costly stones? Is such PRECIOUS SPEECH more rare? Not everyone possesses LIPS THAT SPEAK KNOWLEDGE. It is sad when such is a rarity. Perhaps we are struck by how often we hear foolish talk and SPEECH that is contrary to the will of God going on around us.
Just as jewelry can be an expression of one's personality, SPEECH says something about our character. Unlike jewels and precious stones that are purchased, GODLY SPEECH is a matter of the heart (Matthew 12:34-35) and holds the beautiful potential of gracing those with whom it is shared. Though some gold jewelry or costly stones may not go with all attire, GODLY SPEECH goes well with any outfit.
Paul exhorted. . .
"(29) Let no corrupting talk come out of your MOUTHS, but only such as is GOOD FOR BUILDING UP, as FITS THE OCCASION, that it may GIVE GRACE TO THOSE WHO HEAR." (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)
Let this jewel always be our possession wherever we go. It is the sparkle of LIPS OF KNOWLEDGE that our world is so in need of being drawn toward. May it be a part of our every day wardrobe.

Held Precious! (Part 7)
When I watch the game show "Jeopardy" (ABC television network), I am amazed at how much some people know on such a variety of subjects. Some contestants win lots of money for that knowledge. Perhaps we know people whose minds are full of trivia. Whether it be trivial facts or much needed knowledge, there is still the need to go a step further regarding its application for life.
Solomon stated. . .
"(13) Blessed is the one who finds WISDOM, and the one who gets understanding, (14) for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. (15) She is MORE PRECIOUS THAN JEWELS, and nothing you desire can compare with her." (Proverbs 3:13-15 ESV)
Some search the Scriptures, but still don't seem to understand as they ought. (i.e. John 5:39-40) Simply knowing facts is not enough. We have the need for WISDOM in order to apply that knowledge to life. Though it may be rightly said that "knowledge is power", exercising it wisely is what will bring our life the greatest enrichment. WISDOM can bring a contentment, happiness and joy that silver, gold, and jewels can never bring. There is more intrinsic gain for living from WISDOM than there is from jewels. That wisdom would keep the jewels in their place -- knowing that the lover of wealth really never finds satisfaction (i.e. Ecclesiastes 5:10) -- while what is of utmost significance would become life's sincerest quest; the things of eternal consequence. May we find contentment in the WISDOM from above (note James 3:13-17) that God provides for living, recognizing HIS WISDOM for the truly precious thing it is.
Have a great day PROFITING FROM THE WEALTH OF GODLY WISDOM!

Held Precious! (part 6)
When we think of experiences or events related to life, what do we consider to be precious? Do we think of births, graduations, anniversaries, etc.? Such life milestones that draw family and friends in sharing together are often seen as most precious. However, have we ever considered DEATH as one of life's precious milestones?
In the psalms we read. . .
"(15) PRECIOUS in the sight of the LORD is THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS." (Psalm 116:15 ESV)
Precious? Yes, precious! The DEATH of those who belong to God is PRECIOUS because they belong to the Lord forever! Their trials in the temporariness of this realm are over and the time has come to go home. That is why Paul could face death with a view toward victory.
As Paul gave his farewell address to the Ephesian elders he stated. . .
"(22) And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, (23) except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. (24) But I DO NOT ACCOUNT MY LIFE of any value nor AS PRECIOUS to myself, IF ONLY I MAY FINISH MY COURSE AND THE MINISTRY THAT I RECEIVED FROM THE LORD JESUS, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God." (Acts 20:22-24 ESV)
What a marvelous attitude. And it is because of Jesus that we too can share that outlook. As Jesus faced the cross, He tried to help the disciples understand it was not the end. His DEATH was actually a great milestone in relation to God's plan and our eternal salvation. Jesus came to give us abundant life now (John 10:10) and eternal life to come as His resurrection assures us of ours. (1 Corinthians 15:20-23) Because of the power of His resurrection, DEATH is not the end for us either. DEATH is actually a marvelously significant milestone associated with our eternal relationship with God.
For us as Christians, though there is grieving in the loss of those who pass before us (1 Thessalonians 4:13), we still have hope and thus DEATH can be viewed as precious. Therefore, let us hold our relationship to God as a PRECIOUS thing so that when the end of our life on earth comes, we may walk into that PRECIOUS ETERNAL relationship with our Lord in Heaven. Our holding to what is truly PRECIOUS now will lead us toward that PRECIOUS eternity.
Have a great day LOOKING TOWARD THE MILESTONE INTO ETERNITY!

Held Precious! (part 5)
While Jesus was in the tomb, the disciples were not sure what to make of it all. Though Jesus had foretold of His resurrection they still did not understand. Therefore they found themselves struggling in knowing what was to happen now? What would become of their expectation regarding the kingdom and the hope that Christ had promised? Remember the discussion of the two on the road to Emmaus. (Luke 24:21-24) This was certainly one of their moments for GROWING IN THEIR FAITH. As things unfolded they would "remember his words" (Luke 24:8) and they later remembered other things (John 12:16) after Jesus was glorified. Even though they did not understand at the time, Jesus told them things beforehand so that when they came to pass, they would believe. (John 13:19 & 14:29) Oh, what a PRECIOUS FAITH that ultimately empowered them in ministry for their Lord!
Peter encouraged. . .
"(6) In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) so that the tested genuineness of YOUR FAITH -- MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 1:6-7 ESV)
FAITH! What would we do without it? Not only must we have it in order to please God (Hebrews 11:6), but we must also have it in order to see as we ought and to be properly directed on life's journey since we "walk by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7) It is not so much that seeing is believing as it is BELIEVING IS SEEING. During the time of Jesus' walk on earth there were many who saw the signs that confirmed Him to be the Son of God, but they did not believe, but rather rejected Him. However those with receptive hearts believed and were able to see as God intended.
Occasions when we struggle with our understanding -- as the disciples did -- are times for GROWING IN PRECIOUS FAITH; a FAITH that trusts the One Who does have the answers. It is a FAITH that empowers us to continue pressing on even in the face of opposition and the more challenging the circumstances, the more brilliantly that FAITH can shine!
Jesus asked, "Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes ,WILL HE FIND FAITH ON EARTH?" (Luke 18:8b ESV) May He find us holding onto a PRECIOUS AND STEADFAST FAITH. Let us continue to grow in the GENUINENESS OF A FAITH that is far more precious than gold! In this way our life can become a powerful testimony to those around us that Jesus is truly worth placing our steadfast trust in and may therefore "result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ." To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen!
Have a great day EXEMPLIFYING SUCH AN ENDURING AND PRECIOUS FAITH!

Held Precious! (part 4)
There are things that do not come cheap. Because of this, some purchases must be considered hard and long. "Do I really want to spend my hard earned cash on that?" "Yes, that is so worth having I will gladly pay whatever the cost." "No, it's not worth it. I don't want it that bad."
The view of an object's absolute value is often determined by how much it cost. That which has come at a high price is not generally abused, but handled with care. The higher the cost, the more closely it is guarded and the more precious it is viewed. To do otherwise cheapens its worth.
In view of our redemption, Peter wrote. . .
"(17) And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, (18) knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, (19) but with the PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." (1 Peter 1:17-19 ESV)
What was the price of our ransom from sin? The PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST; a price far greater than silver or gold. Jesus willingly went to the cross -- surrendering Himself there that Friday -- on our behalf. His PRECIOUS LIFE BLOOD was poured out making it possible for our sins to be adequately atoned for and the hope of eternal life to become ours. We were not bought by things of this world, but at a cost from Heaven itself. And Jesus purchased us for Himself. (Titus 2:14) He wants us so badly to be His that He was willing to pay such a precious price. May we live in a manner that acknowledges how special our purchase price is!

Held Precious! (part 3)
Of all of life's experiences, perhaps those that are associated with LOVING RELATIONSHIPS are the most precious. Those we love are held dearly in our hearts and minds. Time spent with them is cherished. Then as time goes on, the memories of time shared are also preciously held.
David wrote in view of His relationship with God. . .
"(7) HOW PRECIOUS IS YOUR STEADFAST LOVE, O GOD! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (8) They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. (9) For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light." (Psalm 36:7-9 ESV)
God's precious STEADFAST LOVE. It is a love we can count on. It is a love that is unwavering. It is a love in which we can find shelter in life. It is a love that just keeps on giving! In fact, that STEADFAST LOVE is the motivation behind the provision of every one of God's gifts.
With regard to God's ultimate gift on our behalf, Paul declared. . .
"(8) but GOD SHOWS HIS LOVE FOR US IN THAT WHILE WE WERE STILL SINNERS, CHRIST DIED FOR US." (Romans 5:8 ESV)
What greater love is there than that which was demonstrated through this gift of Jesus (note John 15:13), Who died even for His enemies with the desire that they would repent and come to believe? Praise God for His STEADFAST LOVE for us. Praise the Lord for His STEADFAST LOVE in following through with the plan. May we behold that love as most precious of all loves as we seek to remain in it.
Have a great day ABIDING IN THE SHELTER OF GOD'S PRECIOUS LOVE!

Held Precious! (part 2)
There are so many things being pursued in this life. So many varied treasures on which the eye rests and toward which the heart is drawn. What is most precious to us? Consider something that is often held within; our THOUGHTS. Do we hold some precious memories; wonderful THOUGHTS associated with our life or the life of people we love? How about holding precious the THOUGHTS OF GOD?
Consider David's focus where he wrote. . .
"(17) HOW PRECIOUS TO ME ARE YOUR THOUGHTS, O GOD! How vast is the sum of them! (18) If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you." (Psalm 139:17-18 ESV)
Are the THOUGHTS OF GOD precious to us? Is it what HE THINKS that matters to us the most? Are we comforted and encouraged by the THOUGHTS and plans of God? Is that where the hope of our life is securely placed?
One very precious thing about GOD'S THOUGHTS is not only His wisdom provided to direct our life walk, but also His very mindfulness of our individual lives. The One Who is able to discern our every thought (Psalm 139:2) has us on His mind. Oh, how precious a THOUGHT that is! Every time I read through this 139th Psalm I sense the great comfort and peace David experienced in knowing how mindful God was of Him as he knew every aspect of his life was lived in full view of his God.
Remember Jesus' encouragement when He stated. . .
"(6) Are not five SPARROWS sold for two pennies? And NOT ONE OF THEM IS FORGOTTEN BEFORE GOD. (7) Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; YOU ARE OF MORE VALUE THAN MANY SPARROWS." (Luke 12:6-7 ESV)
If God has not forgotten the sparrows, He has not forgotten us! Let us hold the THOUGHTS, the plans, and the wisdom OF GOD for our life very dear to us as a most precious gift. May we also be greatly encouraged by GOD'S MINDFULNESS of everything going on in our life. All that He has done in His marvelous creation of this world and the providing of eternal salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, has been done with us in mind.
Have a great day KNOWING YOU ARE ALWAYS ON HIS MIND!

Held Precious! (part 1)
Precious jewels. Precious stones. Precious possessions. Such are generally guarded closely so as to not be lost. However, Jesus noted such cannot be completely safeguarded from either decay or being stolen. (Matthew 6:19) What needs to be most closely cherished and guarded is that which relates to our own selves not being lost. Therefore we must give serious consideration to what we truly consider MOST PRECIOUS to us.
As Jesus cautioned against valuing the wrong things, He declared. . .
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:21 ESV)
We must remain cautious with regard to our heart's attachment. Jesus went on to note how the "eye is the lamp of the body." (Matthew 6:22) On what do our eyes continue to be fixed? What sights are being drawn in to be cherished in the heart? Some have become blinded by worldly wealth and it has become the master they serve. (Matthew 6:24) Whatever it is that we consider MOST PRECIOUS to us is what we will hold the closest, the tightest, and the longest.
Over the next few days (I'm not yet sure how many focuses this series may include) join me in considering what the Scriptures note as being MOST PRECIOUS and therefore worth holding onto. Each of these will relate to our association with God, our character, or other spiritual matters. May we seek God's wisdom in discerning that which ought to be held MOST PRECIOUS so that we are not enticed away from Him and the true blessings with which He desires to bless us.
Have a great day EXERCISING DISCERNMENT IN FIXING THE HEART'S FOCUS!

Worn Out!
We may possess many things that can wear out and get used up. When that happens we usually simply discard them; throw them into the trash. Stuff can be replaced. However, what becomes of our life when we feel we are being WORN OUT? Are we used up? After Job noted what miserable comforters his friends were (Job 16:1), he went on the say the following about God.
We read. . .
"(6) If I speak, my pain is not assuaged, and if I forbear, how much of it leaves me? (7) SURELY NOW GOD HAS WORN ME OUT; he has made desolate all my company." (Job 16:6-7 ESV)
Words did not take away Job's pain. It remained there with Him. Answers were not coming either from his friends or from God. In the waiting he had grown weary, even seeing God has having WORN HIM OUT! Was he all used up? No, he would still be used by the God in Whom his focus needed to remain.
WORN OUT BY GOD! There is a great sense in which that is what I need. I need God to wear me out. I need to be worn down so that my focus is taken off of self and placed on Him. Sometimes I need for God to let me go through certain circumstances of life to remind me how much I need to daily depend on Him. When I try to get through things on my own strength I need to be WORN OUT and WORN DOWN by my own efforts. I need to remember I cannot make it on my strength and wisdom alone. I need God and He desires to avail Himself to me. At times He has waited patiently for me to lift my gaze Heavenward to acknowledge His mindfulness that has always been there.
With God we can continue to look to Him for renewal. (note Isaiah 40:30-31 & 2 Corinthians 4:16) He is the great sustainer of life and the holder of its promise of a blessed eternity. That is the ultimate blessing He desires to bring; to have us forever with Him. However, has He properly gained our attention to bring it about? Have we humbled ourselves enough to truly acknowledge it is not all up to us, but we are to surrender more fully to God for the strengthening of our life?
Ultimately God used Job on behalf of his friends. (Job 42:7-9) Job was elevated by God in their sight. Though Job pressed on without the answers he sought, his humility before God was deepened and his trust and reliance on God were all the stronger. May we not discard the confidence we can have in God (Hebrews 10:35-36) as we rejoice in His power to sustain us until the time for Him take us home as He has promised.
Have a great day SURRENDERED TO BE SUSTAINED!

Clearing Congestion!
Like traffic congestion on the highways it is possible to also suffer from heart congestion. Congestive heart failure is when the heart is unable to pump away blood returning to it fast enough, therefore creating congestion in the veins. Such is similar to traffic flow coming too fast to be processed through intersections and on to other roadways. When confronted with traffic congestion there is the need for some DIRECTION to provide help in clearing things up. When there is "spiritual" heart congestion there is the same need; some DIRECTION to get life's flow moving properly again.
During the time of Israel's leadership under the counsel of Samuel (soon after the death of Eli and his two sons and the return of the ark of the Lord and also prior to the nation's request for a king), he exhorted the nation toward a return of faithfulness to God. We read. . .
"(3) And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, 'If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and DIRECT YOUR HEART TO THE LORD and SERVE HIM ONLY, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.' (4) So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the LORD only." (1 Samuel 7:3-4 ESV)
Our heart DIRECTED to the wrong things will create congestion and can ultimately lead to heart failure; a hardening, falling away, and being separated from God. Therefore we need to continually DIRECT OUR HEART TO THE LORD. We may need to begin by submitting to His hand in clearing from our lives those things that would restrict the flow of our "spiritual" arteries. It could also be that we need to undergo some radical heart surgery.
It is God's Way and Will that will keep our life flowing along the right road. Maintaining a HEART DIRECTED toward His Word will aid us in moving swiftly through life's intersections because we will know The Way we ought to go.
Have a great day LIVING A GODLY HEART HEALTHY LIFE!

We Can Rejoice Because. . . ! (part 3 of 3)
From suffering to perseverance to character to...
"(3) More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, KNOWING THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES endurance, (4) and endurance produces character, and character produces HOPE," (Romans 5:3-4 ESV)
Where would be the HOPE if we give up? We can stand firm with a confident expectation of the fulfillment of the promises of God. HOPE sustains us through the trials, knowing they will pass and even greater blessings are yet to come. Though some of our HOPES for this life may not come about, this is a HOPE Paul declared will "not put us to shame" (or disappoint us). (Romans 5:5 ESV) The HOPE we have in God will not leave us ashamed of having held such a HOPE. It is a HOPE that uplifts us. It is a HOPE that reaches forward.
We are sojourners now, but we can press on, sustained by the HOPE of a promised eternal home! We are soldiers of Christ, involved in a spiritual warfare, but we can hold our ground, strengthened by the assured HOPE of the final victory! We are workers laboring for the Lord, but we can continue on encouraged by the HOPE of a future eternal rest! Our HOPE is not baseless. Neither will it be without fulfillment. We can rejoice because the HOPE is ours!
May we press on in faith with the focus Paul expressed to the church at Rome when we wrote: "(18) For I consider that the SUFFERINGS OF THIS PRESENT TIME ARE NOT WORTH COMPARING WITH THE GLORY THAT IS TO BE REVEALED TO US." (Romans 8:18 ESV)

We Can Rejoice Because . . . ! (part 2 of 3)
It is amazing how one thing can lead to another. There is so much in life that is more closely linked than we may perhaps realize. Because of this, if we were allowed to always choose our circumstances it is very possible we would miss out on some of the great benefits God desires to bring into our lives. Paul pointed out that endurance was developed through suffering. He then pointed out what comes from enduring.
"(3) More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, KNOWING THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES endurance, (4) and endurance produces CHARACTER, . . ." (Romans 5:3-4a ESV)
Through endurance we develop CHARACTER.
James stated it this way:
"And let steadfastness have its full effect, that YOU MAY BE PERFECT AND COMPLETE, lacking in nothing." (James 1:4 ESV)
Why is the development of CHARACTER important? Because life's tests bring out WHAT IS WITHIN US. Are we developing strong CHARACTER within? When we are upset or a trial attempts to knock us over, what spills out? When things are going smooth it is easy to put on a front and appear to be one of good CHARACTER. But when we are tested -- that's when real CHARACTER is revealed. And each time we endure a trial that CHARACTER becomes even stronger.
Consider the following illustration:
THE JARS
The preacher placed two identical jars on the table next to the pulpit. He quoted 1 Samuel 16:7 "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
"These jars came from the same factory, were made of the same materials, and can hold the same amount. But they are different," he explained.
Then he upset one and it oozed out honey. He turned over the other, and vinegar spilled out. "When a jar is upset, whatever is in it comes out."
Until the jars were upset, they looked alike. The difference was within, and could not be seen. When they were upset, their contents were revealed.
Until we are upset we put on a good front. But when we are upset, we reveal our innermost thoughts and attitudes, for "out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45)
What if someone tipped you over today?? What would flow out?? Would you reveal the "honey" of grace and patience, or the "vinegar" of anger and sarcasm??
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." (1 Peter 4:8)
Have a terrific day knowing that the one who upsets you may be just looking for some honey.
-- Author Unknown
Let us rejoice when tested because it is an opportunity God has allowed to come so that we might grow. Through the trials we can develop CHARACTER that will ultimately reveal His power working in and through us.
Have a great day DEVELOPING GODLY CHARACTER!

We Can Rejoice Because. . . ! (part 1 of 3)
At the onset of suffering and trials, we might struggle in an attempt to see anything over which we could rejoice. But Paul pointed out it is what those trials produce in our life that gives us cause for rejoicing. The first of three things Paul specifically mentioned here is. . .
"(3) More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, KNOWING THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES ENDURANCE," (Romans 5:3 ESV)
I did not build up my walking ENDURANCE by sitting around, but rather by walking faster and further. I stuck with it. Through trials we learn ENDURANCE. Through testing we BECOME STRONGER. Through difficulties we GROW AND MATURE. And James stated the same thing. (James 1:2-3) The literal idea is that of "abiding under" the trials. [The Greek word used by Paul, "hupomeno", means to abide under or bear up courageously. It is a strengthened form of "meno" (to abide or endure). Source: W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] We DEVELOP SPIRITUAL STAMINA. Just like a tree is strengthened as it resists the power of the wind and is able to grow and stand tall -- so it is with us as we persevere. We GAIN STRENGTH through the testing of trials of various kinds. Then as we continue to stand, we gain encouragement from the strength we see has been added to our life.
A recent quote on my daily calendar stated: "Dear Lord, are my troubles really opportunities in disguise? Help me to see beyond these painful times and to trust in Your guidance. Amen"
Without the trials we would not be ABLE TO GROW in such a way. May we trust that God knows what He is doing as we look to Him for continued strength.
Have a great day REJOICING OVER OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW!

Rejoice When?
Have you ever heard someone say something of which you were sure they must have said it wrong? "Say what?" "What did you say?" You couldn't possibly have meant. . . ?" "This is "April Fool's Day" -- right?"
After Paul had referred to REJOICING in hope, he went on to say . . .
"(3) More than that, WE REJOICE IN OUR SUFFERINGS, . . . ." (Romans 5:3a ESV)
What? How can we REJOICE through sufferings? Would we respond to Paul by saying, "Maybe you, but not me"?
Are suffering and trials fun? Did the first century Christians look at their persecutors and say, "We're having a great time in the old town tonight!"?
Are suffering and trials enjoyable? Are they the sort of thing we seek out? Do we begin our day by saying, "I think I'll go get tested by fire today"? There is a big difference between going out looking for trouble and having trials simply come our way!
Are suffering and trials avoidable? Perhaps if we were to coil up somewhere and become a hermit. But that may even come with its own trials.
There is much about this life that may be perplexing. We may understand these things more fully by and by. However, when facing the various trials of this life, it is the perspective we maintain that makes all the difference. Since suffering and trials are unavoidably connected to this life, how are we to prepare ourselves?
First, realize they will come. Jesus said so. (John 16:33) Peter said so. (1 Peter 4:12) John said so. (1 John 3:13) And Paul's statement here to the church at Rome acknowledged the fact they come. Don't be surprised. Don't think it strange that they come upon us. The suffering and trials may vary in degree, but they will come.
Secondly, be prepared to respond in faith. We need to retain a proper focus in order to keep our sanity in what sometimes seems like an insane world. The light in which we view our trials is what makes the difference. Paul knew trials! Paul knew suffering! Paul knew pain! (Note 2 Corinthians 11:23-29 for a concise list of Paul's experiences.) Yet he could write to the brethren at Corinth...
"(4) I am acting with great boldness toward you; I have great pride in you; I am filled with comfort. IN ALL OUR AFFLICTION, I AM OVERFLOWING WITH JOY." (2 Corinthians 7:4 ESV)
Wow! What an attitude! What a perspective! Yes, Paul meant exactly what he said. He knew first hand that it was possible to REJOICE even in times of trouble.
Lord willing we will note tomorrow what Paul went on to point out. He mentioned some specific reasons for REJOICING when we go through suffering and trials. It is true there will be cause for great JOY in heaven. However, Paul affirmed that there is great cause for REJOICING even now! Therefore, let us REJOICE!
Have a great day WELLING UP IN JOY BEFORE GOD!
