Rising Above!

While growing up, flying in a small single engine plane was a fairly frequent occurrence. My father was licensed to fly and I grew to love the aerial views of highways, farmlands, and other landscapes. The higher we would rise, the smaller objects below would appear and the more we were able to see. Someone has stated, "Our spirituality can be compared to an airplane ride. The higher we rise, the smaller things on earth become." [bulletin clipping]

This life is filled with distractions. There are many things that tug at us, trying to gain our attention. Though we ought to be involved in activities in this realm -- especially those things that are proper and God glorifying -- we must still be mindful of being spiritual beings with a higher calling than just earthly things.

Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul stated. . .
"(1) If then you HAVE BEEN RAISED WITH CHRIST, SEEK THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (2) SET YOUR MINDS ON THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, not on things that are on earth. (3) For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." ( Colossians 3:1-3 ESV)

The more we MATURE SPIRITUALLY the smaller earthly things will appear to us. The GREATER OUR FAITH the less distracting the cares of this world will seem. As we go about our daily lives, let us be mindful of how what we are doing relates to the things above. It is the Will of God in Heaven that is to direct our activities on earth. ( Matthew 6:10)

Having been RAISED WITH CHRIST our life perspective is to be from a higher vantage point. There are some things that we died to that need to remain dead to us. The higher we RISE SPIRITUALLY the less pull those things will have in our life. Their significance will become smaller the higher we rise above them. Let us continually acknowledge the sense in which our spiritual focuses can allow us to soar free from that which once held us down. Since it is with Christ we have been raised, may we continue to rise higher and higher as we allow Him to pilot our lives in accordance with His Will.
