Honorable Position!
The story has been told how in ancient Greece some politicians thought up a joke to play on an individual among their ranks. They appointed him to the position of "Public Scavenger." However, instead of the role bringing embarrassment, this man decided to show what one could do with such a low position. The result of his efforts were that unsanitary conditions that had once brought about pestilence were eliminated. Better habits of cleanliness were promoted. Even community pride was inspired. Within a few years the office of "Public Scavenger" became viewed as one of honor and great responsibility. From then on only men of great ability could seek and gain the position.
This brings to mind what Jesus tried to get across to His disciples and that we too should continually bear in mind. On at least two occasions the twelve needed their focus redirected regarding position and greatness. ( Mark 9:33-35; 10:42-45) The latter of these two passages reads as follows:
"(42) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, 'You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. (43) But it shall NOT BE SO AMONG YOU. But whoever would BE GREAT among you MUST BE your SERVANT, (44) and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. (45) For EVEN THE SON OF MAN CAME not to be served but TO SERVE, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'" ( Mark 10:42-45 ESV)
If we are not willing to serve in some way, in a sense we really have no position in the eyes of God. Could it be that we are thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought and need to be humbled? There is great honor in WILLINGNESS TO SERVE. Jesus Himself set the example for us. Who are we then to think we are above such activity? May we experience the glory and honor of RESPONSIBLE SERVICE on behalf of others and to the glory of God. SERVICE is part of the high calling we have received from God.
Have a great day HONORED TO SERVE!
