Blessed Designation!

When placed in high positions -- or even given titles to precede their names -- some do not handle the distinction very well. Sometimes even the humble raised to power soon lose their humility. Position and titles can easily go to one's head, causing them to think more highly of themselves than they ought. ( Romans 12:3) Jesus addressed such an attitude at the beginning of a long list of woes directed at the scribes and Pharisees of that day.

We read. . .
"(8) But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and YOU ARE ALL BROTHERS. (9) And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. (10) Neither be called instructors [teachers], for you have one instructor [Teacher], the Christ. (11) The greatest among you shall be your servant. (12) Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." ( Matthew 23:8-12 ESV)

The context in which Jesus was speaking here was that of official titles and not mere references within a family. Jesus found need of making the point because of the tendency among the Jewish leaders of that day to love the places of prominence at feasts ( Matthew 23:6) and the public greetings they received. ( Matthew 23:7) Even what Paul mentioned that some have relegated merely to official titles, he seems to have noted as terms describing the work or service fulfilled; those who functioned as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. ( Ephesians 4:11)

Though we may appropriately honor those who serve well (i.e. 1 Timothy 5:17) in whatever capacity they function within the Body of Christ (the church), it is refreshing to enjoy the mutual relationship of being BROTHERS and SISTERS. Such a distinction creates an atmosphere where we can be mutually encouraged by one another regardless of age or role being fulfilled. Such a view of one another also lends toward a more humble view of self as we individually accept the opportunities to serve on various levels for the benefit of the whole. May God be glorified and our Lord's Body be built up through such relationships.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE GREATNESS OF BEING A BROTHER OR SISTER!
