Amighty Connection!

Though some had apparently stirred up some trouble at Corinth regarding Paul, his apostleship had been appropriately and clearly revealed among them. Paul reminded them of this when he wrote. . .

"(12) The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with SIGNS and WONDERS and MIGHTY WORKS." (2 Corinthians 12:12 ESV)

That Paul was a "MIGHTY" apostle and servant of God, we would probably all agree. He had FAITH marked by a boldness and perseverance in spreading the Gospel wherever he went. However, even in view of the greatness of his FAITH and service in the Name of Christ he appears to have maintained a humble attitude with regard to himself.

In the verse prior to the one noted above we read. . .
"(11) I have been a fool! You forced me to it, for I ought to have been commended by you. For I WAS NOT AT ALL INFERIOR to these super-apostles, even THOUGH I AM NOTHING." (2 Corinthians 12:11 ESV)

"Nothing"? Someone has said, "Faith is the link that binds our nothingness to Almightiness." [source: sentence sermons] It was "BY THE GRACE OF GOD" Paul was what he was. (1 Corinthians 15:10) It was also FAITH in that relationship that caused Paul to declare "I can do ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13 ESV) In humbling himself, it was no longer Paul who lived, but Christ who lived in him (Galatians 2:20) allowing that ALMIGHTY CONNECTION and power to work in and through him.

Praise God for what He can make of our nothingness when our FAITH is placed in Him. Just as He did with the life of Paul He still wills to work in and through us today. (Philippians 2:13) May we therefore humble ourselves under the "MIGHTY HAND OF GOD" (1 Peter 5:6) so that our life will be exalted in doing His Will through the strength He provides.

Have a great day CONNECTED FOR MIGHTILY CARRYING OUT GOD'S WILL!

Setting The Filter!

Filtering is used for various reasons. Water is filtered to eliminate impurities. Fuel for an engine is run through a filter to keep contaminates from getting into the engine. Air filters are used to remove dust or other irritants from air being breathed. We even set up filters in association with our computers to reduce the amount of "spam" coming into our e-mail's inbox. Such filtering is set to block or dump into our trash folder any e-mails coming from specific addresses or containing particular wording. However, in an attempt to filter out some things it is possible to filter out those things we still do want. For example, not long ago one of the daily "teEn-MAIL" focuses did not go through to one recipient, but returned due to "inappropriate content." On that occasion I had included a passage referring to the "works of the flesh" (Galatians 5:19-21) where some words in Paul's list were enough to block the e-mail. I also receive a copy of the "teEn-MAIL" when it is sent out so that I know for sure it has gone out. In the process I too have experienced having a few focuses go directly into my trash folder due to certain wording I had used.

Sometimes we may recognize the need to adjust our filtering system so we do not inadvertently filter out that which is good. It is possible to filter (or narrow our focus) to the point that we block out what OUGHT TO BE ACCEPTED. Some have even blocked their mind from accepting certain Biblical doctrines when reading the Scriptures due to a faulty filtering system. How do we protect ourselves from blocking, dumping or trashing that which should be received? When it comes to filtering ideologies and life values, through what filtering test should they be run?

Paul noted. . .
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and TAKE EVERY THOUGHT CAPTIVE TO OBEY CHRIST," (2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV)

What we accept needs to pass the test of THE MIND OF CHRIST. Whatever we accept and whatever values we hold all needs to be viewed in relation to their compatibility with His life and teaching. If it doesn't fit, let us dump it. If it does, may we allow it in. Sorting it all out in accordance with His Will will safeguard our life by keeping it filled with the knowledge needed to glorify Him and serve His purposes.

Have a great day KEEPING CHRIST AS THE STANDARD FOR ALL OF LIFE!

Consistent Practice?

Perhaps inconsistency is one of the most consistent practices among mankind. It is far easier to make claims or offer others advice and direction than it is to live it out ourselves. However, what does the inconsistency convey? Someone has said, "The world looks at preachers out of the pulpit to know what they mean in it." [source: "1600 Squibs And Quips", compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Jesus noted the following regarding some of the teachers and leaders of that day. . .
"(1) Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, (2) 'The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, (3) so practice and observe whatever they tell you -- but not what they do. For THEY PREACH, BUT DO NOT PRACTICE.'" (Matthew 23:1-3 ESV)

Apparently the Law of God was being taught, but was not being lived out in everyday life. How unfortunate it is when one might be worth listening to, but not worth watching. The words might be right, but the example lived may convey a completely different message. What is the world to make of it? Rather than the life helping to explain the message, what arises is cause for having to explain oneself.

"PRACTICING WHAT WE PREACH" is not only a worthy and reasonable expectation for preachers of the Word, but it is also a relevant exhortation for all of us as Christians. How convincing is our life that we believe what we claim to believe? Does our life reflect it is based on the wisdom of God our voice tries to draw the attention toward? People will be looking and judging our claims based on the manner in which we live. May a consistency in our PROCLAMATION and PRACTICE work together in convincing others we are truly convicted by the Word of God as our daily living clearly explains the practical application of His Will.

Have a great day REFLECTING GOD'S WILL IN OUR WORDS AND WAYS!

Blessed Designation!

When placed in high positions -- or even given titles to precede their names -- some do not handle the distinction very well. Sometimes even the humble raised to power soon lose their humility. Position and titles can easily go to one's head, causing them to think more highly of themselves than they ought. (Romans 12:3) Jesus addressed such an attitude at the beginning of a long list of woes directed at the scribes and Pharisees of that day.

We read. . .
"(8) But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and YOU ARE ALL BROTHERS. (9) And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. (10) Neither be called instructors [teachers], for you have one instructor [Teacher], the Christ. (11) The greatest among you shall be your servant. (12) Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." (Matthew 23:8-12 ESV)

The context in which Jesus was speaking here was that of official titles and not mere references within a family. Jesus found need of making the point because of the tendency among the Jewish leaders of that day to love the places of prominence at feasts (Matthew 23:6) and the public greetings they received. (Matthew 23:7) Even what Paul mentioned that some have relegated merely to official titles, he seems to have noted as terms describing the work or service fulfilled; those who functioned as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. (Ephesians 4:11)

Though we may appropriately honor those who serve well (i.e. 1 Timothy 5:17) in whatever capacity they function within the Body of Christ (the church), it is refreshing to enjoy the mutual relationship of being BROTHERS and SISTERS. Such a distinction creates an atmosphere where we can be mutually encouraged by one another regardless of age or role being fulfilled. Such a view of one another also lends toward a more humble view of self as we individually accept the opportunities to serve on various levels for the benefit of the whole. May God be glorified and our Lord's Body be built up through such relationships.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE GREATNESS OF BEING A BROTHER OR SISTER!

Rising Above!

While growing up, flying in a small single engine plane was a fairly frequent occurrence. My father was licensed to fly and I grew to love the aerial views of highways, farmlands, and other landscapes. The higher we would rise, the smaller objects below would appear and the more we were able to see. Someone has stated, "Our spirituality can be compared to an airplane ride. The higher we rise, the smaller things on earth become." [bulletin clipping]

This life is filled with distractions. There are many things that tug at us, trying to gain our attention. Though we ought to be involved in activities in this realm -- especially those things that are proper and God glorifying -- we must still be mindful of being spiritual beings with a higher calling than just earthly things.

Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul stated. . .
"(1) If then you HAVE BEEN RAISED WITH CHRIST, SEEK THE THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (2) SET YOUR MINDS ON THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, not on things that are on earth. (3) For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." (Colossians 3:1-3 ESV)

The more we MATURE SPIRITUALLY the smaller earthly things will appear to us. The GREATER OUR FAITH the less distracting the cares of this world will seem. As we go about our daily lives, let us be mindful of how what we are doing relates to the things above. It is the Will of God in Heaven that is to direct our activities on earth. (Matthew 6:10)

Having been RAISED WITH CHRIST our life perspective is to be from a higher vantage point. There are some things that we died to that need to remain dead to us. The higher we RISE SPIRITUALLY the less pull those things will have in our life. Their significance will become smaller the higher we rise above them. Let us continually acknowledge the sense in which our spiritual focuses can allow us to soar free from that which once held us down. Since it is with Christ we have been raised, may we continue to rise higher and higher as we allow Him to pilot our lives in accordance with His Will.

Have a great day BLESSED BY A HIGHER VIEW!

Look, But Don't...!

Sometimes when looking at things in an expensive store or on exhibit in a museum, our eyes may behold items of wondrous beauty. However, next to those WONDERFUL THINGS our eyes may also behold a sign reading, "Look, But Don't Touch!" This reminds me of a museum that had an exhibit of old artifacts that would deteriorate simply by the touch of dirty or oily hands. Though a sign clearly warned against touching, touching happened. One wise employee finally posted a sign reading: "Warning! Wash Hands Thoroughly After Touching!" The touching stopped!

Though we may recognize a multitude of reasons for looking, but not touching -- accidental dropping and breaking of irreplaceable expensive items or deterioration due to too much handling, etc. -- perhaps there is a sadder action on the part of some today; a response that is really not new at all. Following His glorious triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus Himself encountered such a response even as He performed WONDERFUL THINGS.

On this occasion we read. . .
"(14) And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. (15) But when the chief priests and the scribes SAW THE WONDERFUL THINGS THAT HE DID, and the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" THEY WERE INDIGNANT," (Matthew 21:14-15 ESV)

Here what we see is the action of "Look, But Don't Believe!" Reading through the Gospels we find on more than one occasion those who would not believe no matter what WONDERFUL SIGN they saw Jesus perform. Even Peter and John were met with the same kind of unbelievable disbelief in the face of the undeniable. (note Acts 4:16-18) Though Matthew tells us the Jewish leaders "saw the WONDERFUL THINGS" that Jesus did, "they were indignant"! Instead of being enthralled with His gracious act of mercy on a blind man, they were annoyed. Rather than being in awe of Jesus' power to restore sight, they were angry. Though their eyes saw, their hearts would just not accept even the possibility the power of the Father was working in and through Jesus; a sign intended to reveal Him as the Messiah and Son of God. (John 14:11)

May we continually keep our eyes and hearts open to the realities of Jesus. Though it is claimed that "seeing is believing" it is obvious that is not always the case. Some will refuse to see regardless of the WONDERFUL THINGS revealed. However, for us to continue believing, we will be enabled to see all the more clearly the WONDERFUL THINGS the Lord will continue to bring to our life now and in our eternity with Him.

Have a great day TOUCHED BY CHRIST TO SEE MORE CLEARLY!

More Than Leaves!

On an occasion when Jesus and His disciples were returning to Jerusalem, He was hungry. We read. . .

"And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and FOUND NOTHING ON IT BUT ONLY LEAVES. And he said to it, "May NO FRUIT ever come from you again!" And the fig tree withered at once." (Matthew 21:19 ESV)

What's it about? It's about the FRUIT! Leaves alone may be fine for hemlock, maple, oak, and other deciduous trees. Such can even provide some cool shade on a hot day. However, when it comes to fruit trees, there is an EXPECTATION OF FRUIT. If fruit is not found, that tree no longer serves its purpose. (note Luke 13:6-9)

When Jesus gave His analogy of the vine and the branches, He exhorted His disciples. . .

"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that BEARS MUCH FRUIT, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5 ESV)

More than just showing life, we are to be living FRUITFUL LIVES! In our connection to Jesus -- the "True Vine" (John 15:1) -- the EXPECTATION IS FRUITFUL LIVES to the glory of the Father! In fact, Jesus noted "FRUITFULNESS as a sign indicating discipleship. (John 15:8) May we not forget it is about the fruit. Let us maintain our connection to the Lord as we understand apart from Him we can bear no fruit.

Have a great day BRANCHING OUT TO SERVE GOD'S PURPOSES!

Blessed Assurance!

There have been times when people have invested in what was declared to be a "SURE THING" only to end up losing their investment. Sometimes investors are misled. Other times what may have honestly been offered as a "sure thing" ended up not turning out to be so due to unforeseen factors. Such is an unfortunate reality in this life. It is hard to predict all the possible things that might happen. The stock market goes up and down. Companies go out of business. Supply and demand can vary greatly. And the item that is hot this year may not be the next. When a business goes bankrupt, some guarantees end up not even being worth the paper on which they are written.

A "SURE THING"! Is there any such thing? Is everything relating to life a gamble or relegated merely to the luck of the draw? Though chance may be an accepted reality with regard to some aspects of life in this world, it does not have to be the view relative to our spiritual life and the hope we have in Christ.

The Hebrew writer encouraged . . .
"(17) So when GOD desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, HE GUARANTEED IT with an oath, (18) so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE SET BEFORE US. (19) We have this as A SURE and steadfast ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, (20) where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 6:17-20 ESV)

A GUARANTEE from God. There are no unforeseen factors to Him! He will not mislead. He cannot lie! The HOPE He offers is a SURE THING! God's blessing of hope in Christ does not hinge on how well the stock market does or the will of mankind on earth, but is established in accordance with His Will in Heaven. Therefore, though there may be a constant shifting of things in this world, we can BE ASSURED when our hope is anchored not in this world, but in Heaven -- where Christ has gone before us -- it is a blessing we will receive! As we give our lives to Christ, may we be encouraged it is an investment that is most certainly safe!

Have a great day TAKING STOCK IN CHRISTIAN LIVING!

So Close, And Yet So Far!

You have probably heard expressions such as: "Close only counts in horseshoes ... and hand-grenades ... etc." This is because there are other areas of life where close just isn't good enough. In fact it is possible to be close and yet in another sense be so very far away!

Remember the account of the nation of Israel being led by Moses toward the promised land. They were so close (physically speaking) to entering in, but were so far (spiritually speaking) from a proper faith in God to bring about His promise! The Hebrew writer reminds us of this history in the following words.

We read . . .
"(3:16) For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? (17) And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? (18) And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? (19) So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. (4:1) Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, LET US FEAR LEST ANY OF YOU SHOULD SEEM TO HAVE FAILED TO REACH IT." (Hebrews 3:16-19; 4:1 ESV)

The New King James Version reads. . .
"Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear LEST ANY OF YOU SEEM TO HAVE COME SHORT OF IT." (Hebrews 4:1 NKJV)

They were physically close and yet spiritually so far away. They were close enough to see the land (and Moses also did from a mountain), but too far away in their relationship with God to be allowed to enter. The Hebrew writer pointed to this history as a warning against any possessing the same spirit of unbelief.

Outwardly we may appear right and yet the heart could still be far away from a proper relationship with God. We could be faithful in church attendance -- even active in service in the Name of Jesus (note Matthew 7:21-23) -- and yet be far from the acceptance of God. We might have His promises in full view, yet be so far from receiving them because we have not trusted enough to enter a covenant relationship with Him through Christ in accordance with His will.

Let us be careful lest we also FALL SHORT through decisions or perspectives based on our will rather than God's. May we never allow anything to separate or distance us from God. He has provided the promises. He has provided the means by which we may receive them. As we walk with God in faith, Jesus' work continues to close the gap, allowing us to enter in as recipients of all His blessed promises. Continue to trust in God's Way in order to enter into the Rest that remains.

Have a great day GOING THE DISTANCE WITH CHRIST!

Our Place!

The story of Joseph is a fascinating one. It seems that others were continually against him. His own brothers sold him to a caravan. (Genesis 37:25-28) When he refused to lie with Potiphar's wife, she lied about him and he was put in prison. (Genesis 39) Then there was the chief cupbearer who forgot about Joseph after himself being freed from prison. (Genesis 40:23) In the process of these events, however, Joseph held onto his integrity and everything put under his charge was blessed by God. When ultimately raised up to the position of being second only to Pharaoh himself (Genesis 41:40), Joseph prepared Egypt for seven years of famine and made it possible to provide for not only Egypt, but those from other places as well, including his own family. (Genesis 45)

For some, being placed in a high position is sometimes the death of humility. When Joseph's brothers came to Egypt, he had full power to treat them as their sins deserved. Nevertheless, he did not. Joseph focused on what God had brought about through the circumstances of his life. (Genesis 45:4-11)

After the death of his father Jacob, Joseph's brothers again became fearful of what Joseph might do. They sent word to Joseph with a message -- a supposed command from their father prior to his death -- urging Joseph to BE FORGIVING. (Genesis 50:15-17) Then Joseph's brothers humbly approached him. Note the wording of Joseph's response to them.

We read . . .
"(18) His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, 'Behold, we are your servants.' (19) But Joseph said to them, 'Do not fear, for AM I IN THE PLACE OF GOD? (20) As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. (21) So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.' Thus HE COMFORTED THEM AND SPOKE KINDLY TO THEM." (Genesis 50:18-19 ESV)

Joseph may have been exalted in Egypt, but his GOD WAS STILL ON THE THRONE of Heaven. Though some might easily agree Joseph had every right, he obviously did not see it that way. We too should remember that VENGEANCE BELONGS TO GOD, and not us. Even before being stated by Moses (Deuteronomy 32:35) Joseph practiced it. Even before Paul (Romans 12:19) and the writer of Hebrews (Hebrews 10:30) repeated it as a principle for the Christian life, Joseph had it right. VENGEANCE is not our place, but rather BELONGS TO GOD. God knows best how to deal it out because people often do not know where to draw the line. Though retaliation may not be easy to resist, leaving it to God is the right focus to maintain! Letting God take care of such matters lifts a weight of concern from our shoulders. Being WILLING TO FORGIVE and let go relieves us of a very heavy burden and does wonders for the digestive system as well. May that blessing be ours!

Have a great day RELIEVED BY THE RELEASE IN FORGIVING!

Narrowing The Focus!

There was an occasion on which Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" (Matthew 16:13) Through the travels with Jesus and hearing the hubbub of the crowds, they had heard such things as people saying He was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets. (Matthew 16:14) Jesus then got a bit more personal with the question as we read further.

"(15) He said to them, 'BUT WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?' (16) Simon Peter replied, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'" (Matthew 16:15-16 ESV)

They had been traveling with Jesus. They had witnessed miracles of various sorts. They had heard His teaching and even gotten some off to the side explanations of some of His parables. They had observed Jesus' wise responses to those who questioned Him and tried to accuse or trap Him in their questioning. What kind of perspective were they developing in view of Jesus?

Still today some would like to view Jesus in general terms: A good man, a good teacher, a philanthropist, etc. When people ask us, WHO DO WE SAY JESUS IS? And even more than that, WHAT DOES OUR LIFE DEMONSTRATE we believe? If we claim Jesus is truly the Christ or Messiah, does our life reveal we trust in the promises linked to Him for both life now and eternity? If we claim Jesus is truly the Lord, does our life reflect we are living joyfully under His Divine and blessed authority? If we claim Jesus is truly the Son of God, does our life truly reverence and honor Him. If we truly acknowledge Jesus as the Word of God that came in the flesh (John 1:1-2 & 14) do we daily put His teachings into practice and strive to live in a Christ-like manner?

WHO DO WE SAY? WHAT DOES OUR LIFE DECLARE? Has our focus become fixed on the reality of His Deity and Lordship so as to allow Him to make all the difference in our life? May we live in such a manner that our verbal claims will be just as believable with the hope that others will come to know Who He truly is as well. Their eternity also depends upon it since no one comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6)

Have a great day LIVING FOR JESUS TO BE SEEN!

Speaking For Itself!

As I have been again reading through Genesis, I have been struck by Jacob's willingness to show INTEGRITY in caring for Laban's (his father-in-law) flocks. Though Laban switched daughters on him after Jacob had worked seven years for Rachel (Genesis 29:25) -- requiring him to work another seven years (Genesis 29:30) after giving him Leah -- and continually changing his wages (note Genesis 31:7), Jacob still took nothing that was not declared to be his wages. Jacob even replaced from his own property any of the flock that were torn by wild beasts or stolen. (Genesis 31:39) He continually showed himself to be a faithful, HONEST, and trustworthy person with all that was entrusted to his care. (Genesis 31:38-40) Through all of this God worked out great blessing for Jacob.

When agreement was made as to what lambs birthed from the flock would become Jacob's wages, he declared to Laban . . .

"SO MY HONESTY WILL ANSWER FOR ME LATER, when you come to look into my wages with you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, shall be counted stolen." (Genesis 30:33 ESV)

I recently read of an individual -- someone who could have used some extra money -- who was called a "moron" for having turned in a bag containing $140,000 in unmarked bills that had somehow been lost from a Brinks armored truck. He did receive a reward, but in holding to his integrity there were still those who would criticize his HONESTY. Actually I would say he was "more on" target with God's Will than those who considered his actions "moronic". Apparently not all people view such as an honorable trait today. Who would have known? He would have! And so would God!

Someone has said, "The sun has no need to boast of its brightness, and honest people have little to say about their honesty." [source: list of sentence sermons] Our HONESTY will generally speak for itself as we go through our day-to-day activities. In big things and small things it will be revealed. In fact, in a society where HONESTY may not be the norm it will shout out loud! As people of God should it not be a shining quality in all areas of our life? May we live in a manner that allows our HONESTY to answer for us as our daily life is being observed.

Have a great day LETTING INTEGRITY'S LIGHT SHINE!

Opportunities!

Many talk about things they would do "if they could", but how much do they really deep down inside WANT TO do them? Perhaps the excuse sometimes used is that the opportunity just has not yet come along. However, could it be that -- like horses with blinders on -- they have simply walked past many of those opportunities, having failed to see them? Must all opportunities be waited for, or can they not also be actively sought out? I know of individuals with developmental disabilities who DESIRE TO work, but many of those jobs don't just come along by themselves. They have others helping them search out and even carve out those opportunities to work.

Someone has said, "If you want to sing, you will find a song." [source unknown] Perhaps there is a very broad application for this thought. Let us think about it in relation to what we may have stated in relation to our own DESIRES. If WE WANT to do most anything bad enough, an opportunity and way to fulfill that DESIRE will most often be found. One who WANTS to serve will find opportunities to serve others. Those who WANT to share what they have will find opportunities to give. My experience in interaction with others is that they generally do what they MOST WANT to do!

When Paul was encouraging the Christians at Corinth to follow through on helping needy saints in Judea, he wrote. . .
"(10) And in this matter I give my judgment: this benefits you, who a year ago started not only to do this work but also to DESIRE TO DO IT. (11) So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness in DESIRING IT may be MATCHED BY your COMPLETING IT out of what you have." (2 Corinthians 8:10-11 ESV)

If our DESIRE is going to "be matched by" completing something, that DESIRE must be sincere. Even the power of the purposeful DESIRE of those in building the tower of Babel was acknowledged as only the beginning of what they would do, even though it was contrary to God's Will. (Genesis 11:6) Where there's a will -- and especially when it is within the Will of God -- there will be a way!

Writing to the church at Galatia, Paul urged. . .
"(9) And let us NOT GROW WEARY of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do NOT GIVE UP. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith." (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

Let us WILLINGLY ACCEPT the opportunities God provides to be of service to others as they come along. However, may we also be willing to rise up and seek out such opportunities as well. With a song of loving service in our heart, we cannot help but "sing" out the action in our daily life. How much do we really WANT TO sing?

Have a great day REMAINING IN TUNE FOR SERVICE TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Run / Walk!

Though quite a number of years ago, I used to be a runner. It was not only a good way to keep in shape, but was a good stress reliever as well. Sometimes when under pressure or if things were not going well, I would take off on a good run. However, my knees no longer like the pounding. When I got serious about losing weight a little over six years ago (a goal I did accomplish) I tried to do a run/walk. However, I soon found that doing a fast paced walk was sufficient (with some diet adjustments) for taking of the excess pounds and getting me back in shape. Thus I continue to be a walker instead of a runner.

Running and walking are also associated with our spiritual life. Both have an impact on our SPIRITUAL HEALTH.

Paul noted a characteristic of our spiritual walk as being. . .
"(7) for WE WALK BY FAITH, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV)

Faith is something we must possess. (Hebrews 11:6) However, though the walking is not by sight, it is not completely blind faith. It is faith based on the track record of God's awesome power and complete faithfulness. Therefore our Christian walk is to be characterized by faith in Him. Is that not a wonderful STRESS RELIEVER?

If we put too much faith in ourselves, we may soon find cause for stress, because we are often not as strong in and of ourselves as we might think we are. Even Peter struggled in that view of himself as his faith was growing. (note Luke 22:31-34) As we "walk by faith" there are some situations in life where it is best to turn that walk into a run!

Paul, in one of his letters to Timothy exhorted. . .
"(22) So FLEE YOUTHFUL PASSIONS and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22 ESV)

There are some things with which we do not want to play around. There are some temptations we would be wise not to stick around for, simply to see how strong we might be. The potentially harmful impact to our SPIRITUAL HEALTH is not worth the risk! At such times our walk needs to increase to a run that gets us just as far away from sin and temptation as possible. This too will ELIMINATE POTENTIAL LIFE STRESSES, guilt, and regret.

Running and walking. May we exercise proper discernment of when to do which as we continue life's spiritual journey toward home.

Have a great day PROPERLY MOVING AS LIFE'S SITUATIONS DICTATE!

An Invitation!

When we have received an invitation we have the choice to either accept or reject that invitation. However, those are not the only two choices associated with an invitation. We also have the choice regarding how long we will remain. Perhaps we would choose to depart at some point because we no longer enjoyed the company. Maybe such a choice would be based on not liking the activities going on. Or could one possibly develop a lack of appreciation for the host who had offered the invitation?

When Peter and the other disciples witnessed Jesus walking on the water, Peter received an invitation. We read. . .
"(28) And Peter answered him, 'Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.' (29) HE SAID, 'COME.' So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, 'Lord, save me.' (31) Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, 'O you of little faith, why did you doubt?' (32) And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased." (Matthew 14:28-32 ESV)

Peter accepted the Lord's invitation to "come", and according to the Scriptures Peter -- who as a fisherman and would have had a healthy respect for stormy seas -- "got out of the boat and WALKED on the water." But for how long? How far did he go? When Peter's FOCUS SHIFTED AWAY FROM JESUS, he began to sink. Recognizing his situation, Peter at least knew to Whom he needed to call for help. Yes, Peter was still growing in his faith. Aren't we all?

Consider our own WALK to and with Jesus. He has invited us all to come. (note the sweet invitation of Matthew 11:28-30) We may eagerly accept Jesus' invitation to come to Him, but for how long? Like Peter, it will depend on WHERE OUR FOCUS REMAINS! If we allow the things of this world to distract us we can soon find ourselves drifting away from the Lord and sinking into the world's ways. Our FOCUS needs to remain FIXED ON HIM (note Hebrews 12:2) and His Will!

May Jesus continue to be appreciated for the wonderful and gracious host He is. Let us also recognize there can be no better or more satisfying activities than those in which He has chosen to lead us. And because of our FOCUS ON HIM, being in the company of other believers should become sweeter and sweeter as well. In our decision to "come" to Jesus, let us surrender to remain to the end of life's way as we trust Him to take us on into a glorious eternity with Him. We can trust Him to keep our lives afloat.

Have a great day KEEPING THE EYES ON JESUS!

Paternity Test!

Claims may be made, but what is the true essence revealed in the manner of living? Though some lay claim to a glorious ancestry, what does their life truly say regarding their SPIRITUAL DNA? Sometimes when there is an inheritance to be given, unknown relatives may come out of the woodwork seeking to make it theirs. Who has the right? The ones who truly are related.

As Jesus talked with some who laid proud claim to being the offspring of Abraham (John 8:33), He pointed to a character very much unlike that of Abraham. After these opposing Jesus stated, "Abraham is our father" (John 8:39), they went on to further declare, "We have one Father -- even God." (John 8:41) However, with regard to both claims Jesus asserted what was exhibited in their life was contrary to the character of both Abraham and God. Right then and there Jesus declared the "paternity test" results and acknowledged their true SPIRITUAL DNA.

We read. . .
"(44) YOU ARE OF YOUR FATHER THE DEVIL, and YOUR WILL IS TO DO YOUR FATHER'S DESIRES. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44 ESV)

Though they made a verbal claim, their SPIRITUAL DNA aligned them with a different father. Is our life revealing we are truly the offspring of God? Are we of those who accept and believe in the One the Heavenly Father sent?

When John was introducing the Messiah in his Gospel, he noted . . .
"(11) He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. (12) But to ALL WHO DID RECEIVE HIM, who BELIEVED in his name, HE GAVE THE RIGHT TO BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD, (13) who were BORN, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but OF GOD." (John 1:11-13 ESV)

Our Heavenly Father has provided the means for us to be "born again to a living hope" enabling us to receive an imperishable inheritance being kept for us in heaven. (1 Peter 1:3-4) May the manner in which we live our daily life reveal a character that rightly attests to our SPIRITUAL DNA being traceable to God.

Have a great day TRULY BEING OUR HEAVENLY FATHER'S CHILD!

Life Connectivity!

There is a sense in which we must acknowledge we are not alone or intended to live lives completely separated from others. This has often been expressed by the saying, "No man is an island unto himself." Generally this statement is used to express our MUTUAL NEED for one another. Nevertheless, we are still viewed (even by God) as individuals.

Recently I came across the following quotation: "'No man is an island.' said poet John Donne. I believe every man is an island, but there are no limits to the bridges or harbors one can build." [Roy C. Cook]

Could it be that Roy Cook's comment was intended to express the recognition of our individuality while at the same time acknowledging the personal responsibility to connect with others and allow them to find safety in a relationship with us? Even in the midst of unity we do not cease to be individuals. The challenge in view of our individuality is how we can be drawn into a meaningful connection with each other. Being in Christ is to bring us into unity with one another, but I believe the key to maintaining this unity is in learning what we can do to BE OF BENEFIT TO ONE ANOTHER. How can our life help make the life of others better?

Peter urged. . .
"(10) As each has received a gift, USE IT TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER, as good stewards of God's varied grace: (11) whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies -- in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV)

Peter acknowledge giftedness individually, but also that the gifts were to be used for SERVING ONE ANOTHER. We are to be stewards (wise users, not selfish hoarders) of what God has given to us. May we recognize our individual responsibility to build bridges and create harbors in our life that will bring godly benefit to others and glory to God. In the process we will find mutual blessing.

Have a great day DEVELOPING PURPOSEFUL AND SELFLESS RELATIONSHIPS!

Answering The Critics!

It seems no matter what someone might do, there will always be critics in the crowd. Some might think the only way to silence the critics is to do nothing, thereby giving no grounds for accusation. However, such would also be a point of criticism. DOING nothing is not an option. As Christians we have been called TO BE light, salt, and servants.

Generally speaking, those who tend to be the most critical are not always very consistent in their criticism. We even have an example of such during the ministry of Jesus. When John the Baptist was put in prison, Jesus had an opportunity to compliment John's ministry. Jesus then drew attention to the critical attitude possessed by some who had observed both the ministry of John and of Jesus.

We read. . .
"(16) But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, (17) 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' (18) For JOHN CAME NEITHER EATING NOR DRINKING, and they say, 'He has a demon.' (19) THE SON OF MAN CAME EATING AND DRINKING, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' YET WISDOM IS JUSTIFIED BY HER DEEDS.'" (Mathew 11:16-19 ESV)

According to Jesus' analogy of children playing in the marketplaces, such criticism is very childish. Like children who are not happy no matter what game their playmates might be playing. When such an attitude moves into adulthood, there will be actions that no matter how much explanation might be given, the critics will either just not see it, or try to read other things into it. John and Jesus were described as approaching their ministries in contrasting fashion and yet these critics accepted neither. John was a preacher in the wilderness as he prepared the way for the beginning of Jesus' ministry. Jesus, on the other hand, connected with others in a variety of social settings and was criticized for that.

How to deal with such? Jesus said, "YET WISDOM IS JUSTIFIED BY HER DEEDS." Jesus wisely continued DOING what He knew to be right and let the WISDOM OF HIS ACTIONS be the answer to His critics whether they would accept or not. Ultimately WISDOM will shine forth. May we follow the example of Jesus and maintain our focus on DOING what we know is right in the eyes of God. It is not the view of the critics, but His that matters most and such actions will still have their greatest impact on others.

Have a great day ALLOWING GODLY ACTION TO ANSWER FOR ITSELF!

As We Go!

When Jesus gave His disciples what we refer to as the "Great Commission" (Matthew 28:19-20), He placed their actions -- those of making disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them to observe all He had commanded -- in the literal context of "to go", "to travel", or "to journey" as in the course of going. It has been noted as implying "as you go." This was to be their activity as they moved from day to day and place to place in life. When Jesus sent out His disciples on what has been called "the limited commission", He did so with the following exhortation.

"Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be WISE AS SERPENTS and INNOCENT AS DOVES." (Matthew 10:16 ESV)

In this same discussion, Jesus noted how they would be faced with those who were willing to receive, but also those who would reject them and their message. They, as "sheep", would encounter "wolves" -- the false teachers (note Mathew 7:15) and those in opposition to their teaching -- along the way. As sheep following the guidance of their Shepherd (Jesus) they would encounter those who desired to destroy and devour them. Thus the admonition to be "WISE AS SERPENTS" and "INNOCENT AS DOVES."

The WISDOM. They were to exercise WISDOM in avoiding danger. They were not to throw caution to the wind and go out seeking conflict and trouble. However, that did not mean they were to be wishy-washy in their faith or with the truth. Though they were not to be marked by a fanatical thirst to become a martyr, it does appear martyrdom was accepted when the other choice was to deny their faith. They were to boldly hold to and proclaim the truth, but without being destructive. Though God's Word is the "sword of the spirit" (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12) that doesn't mean we are to take it and try to slice and dice people up and run them through. We are to answer those who question our faith and hope "with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15-16)

The INNOCENCE. They were to be INNOCENT of being troublemakers as they shared the truth. The truth is to be spoken in love. (Ephesians 4:15) Recognizing where it was not being accepted was reason to move on. (Matthew 10:14) Though INNOCENT we are not to be gullible, but are to recognize the dangers that do exist as we live and speak with a consistency that demonstrates the genuineness of our faith.

May we be zealous with regard to the work we as Christians have been called to do. However, let us also be discerning as we go about it. As sheep in the fold of the Good Shepherd, may we share the message of salvation in Him with WISDOM and INNOCENCE. In this way the genuineness of our faith will be seen and more doors of opportunity will open.

Have a great day SHARING THE GOOD NEWS AS WE MOVE ALONG LIFE'S WAY!

What Do You Add?

God has added so much to our lives. He has given us a beautiful world in which to live. He has given us senses by which to enjoy it. He has given us so many promises to give us hope and encourage us to press on in life. He has given us peace in knowing that Jesus' blood has the power to remove the guilt of our sins. And the list goes on. However, are we a container that just continues to fill and hold these blessings God has added to our lives as we trust Him and follow His way? Or are we a container that allows those blessings to spill over and touch the lives of those around us? God wants our lives to in some way add something to the world in which we live.

There are various ways in which the Scriptures describe a life lived as God would have it. One of those is found where Jesus said. . .

"(13) You are the SALT OF THE EARTH, but if SALT has lost its taste, how shall its SALTINESS be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet." (Matthew 5:13 ESV)

When we think of salt there are various things that may come to mind as far as its usefulness. Salt has been used to season food. Salt has been used to heal. Salt has also been used to preserve food.

To consider our lives as salt we should consider the following:
[1] Does my life add flavor to life?
[2] Does my life create a thirst for God and His Will?
[3] Does my life help heal the aches and wounds of others?
[4] Does my life help preserve the goodness and freshness of what is truly life?
[5] If not -- is my life then like salt that is only good for being thrown out and walked on?

Let us BE THE SALT of which this earth is so much in need. Be the seasoning, healing and preserving influence by which those round us need to be touched. That is how God wants to use our lives. He wants our relationship with Him to add something to life. Are we adding something? Are we influencing? That is our ongoing challenge! May we continue to allow God to do that work through us!

Have a great day USED BY GOD TO IMPACT THOSE AROUND US!

Lyrics And Life!

It has always amazed me how a music artist (or group) whose lifestyle may not necessarily reflect much in the way of godliness, will put out a "Gospel" music album. Their musical ability may be good and the hymns or Christian songs may be very enjoyable to listen to, but have they LISTENED TO THE WORDS? Though their phrasing and voice inflection may sound like they understand the message, do they really? Or is it just another song?

I have witnessed performances of Handel's "Messiah" where believers and non-believers stood side by side singing those words. However, have they LISTENED TO THE MESSAGE AND STORY? I would agree that Handel's "Messiah" is a marvelous musical masterpiece, but the words themselves are powerful! I recently read of a performance of the "Messiah" that was attended by Handel himself. At the close of the performance people stood and turned toward Handel and applauded. Handel stood up and pointed up toward God. That was where he felt the glory and honor needed to be directed. The audience may have enjoyed the musical creation, but Handel knew the message contained in his great work.

God pointed out to Ezekiel. . .
"(30) As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, 'Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.' (31) And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and THEY HEAR WHAT YOU SAY BUT THEY WILL NOT DO IT; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. (32) And behold, YOU ARE TO THEM LIKE ONE WHO SINGS LUSTFUL SONGS WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE and plays well on an instrument, for THEY HEAR what you say, BUT THEY WILL NOT DO IT. (33) When this comes -- and come it will! -- then they will know that a prophet has been among them." (Ezekiel 33:30-33 ESV)

God's message is not just words. It is not merely something for a performance. Rather, His message is FOR LIFE. And the day will come when all will come to grips with the validity of what He has revealed. May God's message be more than beautiful words to sing or listen to, but a message that means something to OUR LIFE. Let it be WORDS TO LIVE BY that we may all become a part of the story God has begun and will bring to fulfillment. May it be more than a masterpiece to please our ears, but a message to which we have LISTENED AND APPLIED to our daily life! In this way our life performed in the presence of God and the world will be applauded by Him as we allow His message to be music to our ears.

Have a great day INSPIRED FOR LIVING BY THE MESSAGE OF GOD'S SONG!

Dream And Do!

"What were you thinking when you did that?" Sometimes the response to this question is, "I wasn't thinking." It has been noted that "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." [bulletin clipping] Perhaps we have experienced the "nightmare"; the consequences of actions that were not fully thought out. It is wise to give consideration to our actions before they are CARRIED OUT. However, the good we see that needs to be done, but is not CARRIED OUT, is of consequence as well.

As James noted how faith and works are inseparable, he stated. . .
"(14) WHAT GOOD IS IT, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (15) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (16) and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and filled,' without giving them the things needed for the body, WHAT GOOD IS THAT? (17) So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." (James 2:14-17 ESV)

This reminds me of the farmer with barns full of corn who would pray every night for the hungry to be fed. After one such prayer one of his children spoke up and said, "Dad, I wish I had your corn." To which he responded, "You, do? And what would you do with it?" "I would answer you prayer." answer the child.

Later James would state. . .
"(17) So WHOEVER KNOWS THE RIGHT THING TO DO AND FAILS TO DO IT, FOR HIM IT IS SIN." (James 4:17 ESV)

Such a principle may have wide application. Certainly we should give our actions some thought before carrying them out. However, we must also CARRY THROUGH with that which we know and see needs and ought to be done.

Solomon urged. . .
"(3) Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. . . . (9) The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." (Proverbs 16: 3 & 9 ESV)

Giving our dreams and plans over the Lord with a willingness to be used by Him in whatever ways He sees fit, will not only bless our life, but the lives of those who are touched by us. It is okay to dream, but may our vision for action be accompanied by a willingness to FOLLOW THROUGH. Though we may dream big at times, remember that God is bigger than our dreams. (note Ephesians 3:20) As we step forward in service to His glory, may we be amazed at what He can bring about when we are completely willing to be used by Him.

Have a great day LIVING OUT A VISION OF GOD GLORIFYING SERVICE!

Pull Back The Curtain!

The sun can be shining brightly while some still remain in a darkened room. When a ray of light slips through a space between the window curtains, a little bit of what is in the room can be seen for what it is. The MORE LIGHT allowed to come into the room the more the eye will be able to see. The change is not in the power of the sun to shine, however. The change comes through allowing MORE OF ITS LIGHT to come in.

Jesus said. . .
"(34) Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. (35) Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. (36) IF THEN YOUR WHOLE BODY IS FULL OF LIGHT, having no part dark, IT WILL BE WHOLLY BRIGHT, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light." (Luke 11:34-36 ESV)

The more we open up to THE SON, the more we will be able to see as we ought. Paul referred to some who were hardened because a veil remained over their hearts; a veil that in Christ could be removed so as to behold the glory of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:14-18) Is our life open for maximum exposure to the light of THE SON?

As "THE TRUE LIGHT (John 1:9), THE SON has the power to illuminate every nook and cranny within our life and that for our greatest benefit. May we keep our life inline with THE SON to receive His Light as we continually open our hearts and minds MORE AND MORE to the illumination of His Divine Will.

Have a great day WITH THE SON SHINING IN EVERY CORNER OF OUR LIFE!

Getting The Picture!

We have kind of become spoiled with digital cameras, because we get to see the pictures immediately. It was not that long ago that I was taking pictures with my old 35mm camera that a child wanted to see the back for the picture; a feature such a camera did not possess. It used to be we had to wait for our film to come back from being developed and printed at a photo laboratory except for those who had their own darkroom. However, some still take a considerable amount of time TO ENHANCE their digital pictures through the use of computer software to brighten, adjust contrast, eliminate redeye, etc.

What about when it comes to ENHANCING OUR LIFE? Is that something we expect to take place today as instantly as digital camera processes? Or do we recognize the means as being the same as it has always been? Someone has noted, "The features of Christ are best developed on the tablets of the soul in the darkroom of meditation." [source: list of sentence sermons]

We cannot become like Jesus unless we are willing to spend time focusing on the manner in which He lived on this earth and take to heart the teaching He shared. It takes effort and time for CHRIST-LIKENESS TO DEVELOP more clearly in our life. Time spent alone in God's Word on a regular basis is of paramount significance for such growth.

Even the psalmist noted the one who thrives is the one who understands the need for continual mediation on the message of God. We read . . .

"(1) Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; (2) but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and ON HIS LAW HE MEDITATES DAY AND NIGHT. (3) He is like a tree planted by streams of water that YIELDS ITS FRUIT in its season, and its leaf does NOT WITHER. In all that he does, he PROSPERS." (Psalm 1:1-3 ESV)

As we go into the "darkroom" of our private meditations and study of God's Word, let us do so with the purpose of godliness and the essence of Christ TO DEVELOP more and more clearly as the picture of our life. The more of that picture we get within ourselves, the clearer it will be outwardly. As has been said, "One picture is worth a thousand words." May our life be such a picture of the Wisdom God has provided for daily living.

Have a great day PREPARING TO PROVIDE A CLEARER IMAGE OF CHRIST-LIKENESS!

Open Mike?

Perhaps you have been someplace that held an "Open Mike" session. Presented on such occasions is the opportunity for anyone who wishes to step up to the microphone and speak, recite something, tell a joke, or sing a song; a time of revelation as to whether one has talent or a lack thereof. Perhaps with each one who steps up to the mike there is wonder as to what will come out when the MOUTH OPENS up.

In Matthew's account of what we have come to know as Jesus' "sermon on the mount", after noting Jesus sitting down with His disciples coming to Him we read. . .

"And HE OPENED HIS MOUTH AND TAUGHT THEM, saying:" (Matthew 5:2 ESV)

Anyone can open their mouth, but what is THE IMPACT that comes from what is spoken? What comes from every open mouth is not of equal value! What is recorded in this and the next two chapters (Matthew 5-7) is powerful stuff. From the Beattitudes to the impacting qualities of our life on others, focusing away from what others had taught to what Jesus emphatically declared as the way we ought to be with others, and with regard to our connection with the Heavenly Father and how life is lived in His presence, etc.; all very timely and practical teaching. Imagine if everyone was willing to live all of the principles shared by Jesus in just these three chapters, what a DYNAMIC IMPACT it would have in this world! What Jesus addressed is just as practical today as it was when HE OPENED HIS MOUTH and spoke those words.

After Jesus declared these truths for daily living we read. . .
"(28) And when Jesus finished these sayings, THE CROWDS WERE ASTONISHED AT HIS TEACHING, (29) for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes." (Matthew 7:28-29 ESV)

The people were properly impressed! Are we? Some may open their mouth and sound authoritative, but there was really something different in the way Jesus came across and the level of wisdom from which He spoke. His authority ought to be acknowledged (note Philippians 2:9-11) and the day will come when all will come face to face with it. May we allow the authoritative, glorious, life changing, and practical teaching of Jesus to POWERFULLY IMPACT the manner in which we live our daily lives. Then, when we open our mouths, may the IMPACT our Lord has had on our life be indicated in our speech as well. We may be surprised how THAT IMPACT carries over to those whose lives we touch.

Have a great day LOVINGLY LIVING OUR LORD'S LIFE LESSONS!

Honorable Position!

The story has been told how in ancient Greece some politicians thought up a joke to play on an individual among their ranks. They appointed him to the position of "Public Scavenger." However, instead of the role bringing embarrassment, this man decided to show what one could do with such a low position. The result of his efforts were that unsanitary conditions that had once brought about pestilence were eliminated. Better habits of cleanliness were promoted. Even community pride was inspired. Within a few years the office of "Public Scavenger" became viewed as one of honor and great responsibility. From then on only men of great ability could seek and gain the position.

This brings to mind what Jesus tried to get across to His disciples and that we too should continually bear in mind. On at least two occasions the twelve needed their focus redirected regarding position and greatness. (Mark 9:33-35; 10:42-45) The latter of these two passages reads as follows:

"(42) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, 'You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. (43) But it shall NOT BE SO AMONG YOU. But whoever would BE GREAT among you MUST BE your SERVANT, (44) and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. (45) For EVEN THE SON OF MAN CAME not to be served but TO SERVE, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'" (Mark 10:42-45 ESV)

If we are not willing to serve in some way, in a sense we really have no position in the eyes of God. Could it be that we are thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought and need to be humbled? There is great honor in WILLINGNESS TO SERVE. Jesus Himself set the example for us. Who are we then to think we are above such activity? May we experience the glory and honor of RESPONSIBLE SERVICE on behalf of others and to the glory of God. SERVICE is part of the high calling we have received from God.

Have a great day HONORED TO SERVE!

Enough With That!

"Enough already!" "I'm done with that!" "No more!" Do those words strike us as expressions of RESOLVE? Recognizing those things of which we need to be finished is only part of the battle. The rest is RESOLVE to do it as the life focus is shifted another direction. Rehabilitation of life (whether physical or spiritual) works best when there is rehabilitation of the thinking. Transformation from within has more power than mere outward conforming. We need a steadfast RESOLVE toward that which is enough!

In Peter's first letter he wrote. . .
"(1) Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has CEASED FROM SIN, (2) SO AS TO LIVE FOR THE REST OF THE TIME IN THE FLESH no longer for human passions but FOR THE WILL OF GOD. (3) For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry." (1 Peter 4:1-3 ESV)

The New Living Translation begins verse three with, "You have HAD ENOUGH in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy". (NLT, ©1997, Tyndale House) What might we add to Peter's list that needs to be moved from in our life? What is it that we have spent enough time doing that relates more to our flesh than to our relationship with God? We don't have to wait for new years to come along to make resolutions. Each day God provides is another opportunity to RESOLVE to do better than we did the day before and to leave behind actions, activities, and associations that may be taking us away rather than toward the WILL OF GOD.

Today is the first day of the rest of our life. May it be a day in which we firmly RESOLVE to cease from sin and live for the rest of our time in the flesh making GOD'S WILL in Heaven ours on earth! After all, it is HIS WILL that will ultimately be done! Therefore, living for HIS WILL will indeed be found to be enough!

Have a great day FINDING GOD'S WILL A SUFFICIENT GUIDE FOR DAILY LIVING!

Knock! Knock!

When someone comes knocking at our door, it is not only appropriate, but also wise to respond, "Who's there?"! Though we ought to be hospitable people, we must still guard against allowing danger to enter in. Even opening the door a little bit in some situations could allow the wrong person to push on through.

When Cain became upset that his brother Abel's offering was regarded by God, but his was not, he became ANGRY. (Genesis 4:3-5) ANGER is one of those things that can easily take control of our life if we do not take care to control it. Such became the case with Cain.

We read. . .
"(6) The Lord said to Cain, 'Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? (7) If you DO WELL, will you not BE ACCEPTED? And if you do not do well, SIN IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR. ITS DESIRE IS FOR YOU, BUT YOU MUST RULE OVER IT.'" (Genesis 4:6-7 ESV)

ANGER came knocking! Sin was at Cain's door. He was even warned by God that sin was "crouching" there. However, Cain let sin in anyway! Cain allowed his ANGER to get the best of him and bring out his worst! He killed his brother. (Genesis 4:8)

This is one of the great dangers of ANGER; we do not always know to what ends it might lead us. Therefore it is important to master it before it masters us! When ANGER gets the best of us it usually brings out the worst in our actions and words.

In Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus, he warned. . .
"(26) BE ANGRY AND DO NOT SIN; do NOT LET the SUN GO DOWN ON YOUR ANGER, (27) and GIVE NO OPPORTUNITY TO THE DEVIL." (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)

Sometimes the only opportunity the devil needs is to get his foot in the door. Through uncontrolled ANGER the devil has gained many victories. We must keep the door completely closed to him. Instead, let us bear in mind how we -- as children of God -- are to be peacemakers. (Matthew 5:9) May that peace begin within us that others can receive our best.

Have a great day SEEKING GOD'S HELP TO DO WELL!

Was, Is, And Will Be!

When God began His Creation -- as He spoke everything into existence -- we find again and again the expression, "AND IT WAS SO." (Genesis 1:7, 9, 11, 15, 24, & 30) Each time God spoke, what He had in mind to do took place. His Word brought about activity. His Word brought about life. Does that power not remain in HIS WORD even today? The One Who was, is and will be -- because He is eternal -- speaks to bring about what was, is and will be. And IT WILL BE SO!

Through His prophet Isaiah, God revealed. . .
"(10) For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, (11) SO SHALL MY WORD BE that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but IT SHALL ACCOMPLISH THAT WHICH I PURPOSE, AND SHALL SUCCEED IN THE THING FOR WHICH I SENT IT." (Isaiah 55:10-11 ESV)

God does not speak empty words and so they shall not return to Him empty. God does not speak idle words, but words that produce action in the lives of those who will receive them. HIS WORDS will fulfill what He has spoken! Just as God brought about this Creation in the beginning by HIS WORD, so He will someday bring it to an end by that SAME WORD. (2 Peter 3:7) Therefore we ought to BE ATTENTIVE to what He has spoken so that what He has declared WILL BE SO in our own life.

Let us continue to turn to the One Who has the "WORDS OF ETERNAL LIFE" (John 6:68) as we trust what God has said will be, will be. "Holding fast to the WORD OF LIFE" we will be prepared for the day of Christ (Philippians 2:15 ESV) that will surely come to be! God's track record regarding being true to HIS WORD reveals that to be the case. As He spoke "AND IT WAS SO" in the beginning, may we therefore allow HIS WORD TO BE SO in our daily life.

Have a great day BROUGHT TO GODLY LIVING BY HIS POWERFUL WORD!

The Beginning Of Re-Creation!

We noted yesterday the power of God's Word in Creation and its power in our life today. The Word was involved in Creation as John noted. . .

"(1) IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD, and THE WORD WAS WITH GOD, and THE WORD WAS GOD. (2) He was IN THE BEGINNING WITH GOD. (3) All things were made through him, and WITHOUT HIM WAS NOT ANY THING MADE THAT WAS MADE. (4) In him was life, and the life was the light of men." (John 1:1-4 ESV)

When we drop down to verse fourteen we find that John made it clear "THE WORD" to Whom he referred was Jesus, the Son of God; THE WORD that became flesh. The introduction of Jesus does not begin in a stable, but with the story of Creation. He is also of the utmost significance in the story of "RE-CREATION"! We must keep in mind where the process of renewal begins today and help others come to know that Source and blessing as well.

Paul wrote. . .
"(17) Therefore, IF ANYONE IS IN CHRIST, HE IS A NEW CREATION. The old has passed away; behold, THE NEW HAS COME." (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)

Jesus told Nicodemus, "You must be born again." (John 3:7 ESV) Just as we experienced a physical birth, there is the necessity of a spiritual one. Each is a masterpiece of God's work of Creation and RE-CREATION" and to be a part of our life story. This new birth comes about through our association with Christ, as we noted Paul's statement above that those who are "IN CHRIST" are "A NEW CREATION." One must be "IN CHRIST" for this process to take place and Paul noted in his letter to the church at Galatia that "For as many of you as WERE BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST HAVE PUT ON CHRIST." (Galatians 3:27)

Just as Jesus was in the beginning with God at the time of Creation, He is also the link to our RE-CREATION. IN HIM the blessing of "NEWNESS OF LIFE" comes. (Romans 6:4, where Paul also clearly associated this "newness of life" with baptism.) Praise God for the NEWNESS He has provided in Christ!

Have a great day BEARING THE IDENTITY OF A NEW CREATION IN CHRIST!

In The Beginning!

The first words we read in the Bible are. . .
"(1) IN THE BEGINNING, GOD CREATED the heavens and the earth. (2) THE EARTH WAS WITHOUT FORM AND VOID, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (3) AND GOD SAID, . . . ." (Genesis 1:1-3a ESV)

Here was the picture "In the beginning." Not the beginning for God, but the beginning of life as we have come to know it in this realm. "In the beginning," God brought into existence all of creation. "In the beginning," GOD SPOKE and creation TOOK SHAPE. Peter also noted that it was "BY THE WORD OF GOD" the earth WAS FORMED. (2 Peter 3:5) God, the Creator, is still the Sustainer, Renewer, and Re-creator of life.

The power of GOD'S WORD upon creation "In the beginning" can still have its affect on our life today. Here we are "In the beginning" of a new year. With God's help our lives can take on THE FORM He desires. Where there has been "void", He can still provide substance. Where there has been chaos, He can still bring order. Where there has been corruption He can bring renewal.

Our new self is to be "RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR." (Colossians 3:10) Let us resolve with each day God provides -- as we begin this new year -- to submit more fully to His Will. As He speaks through HIS WORD, may our lives TAKE FORM in accordance with the design He has in mind.

Have a great day REMAINING A PRODUCT OF GOD'S WILL!
