Suitable Offering!

Under the old Jewish law, there was criteria set up (by the word of God) for the purpose of determining what was or was not suitable for being offered to God. Whatever was offered -- whether it be of the flock or the herd -- was to be "without blemish." (Leviticus 1:3 & 10; 3:1 & 4; 4:34, 28, & 32; etc.) However, this was not always followed (note Malachi 1:8) and therefore offerings were made that we unacceptable to God.

Jesus was an offering "without blemish or spot" made on our behalf. (1 Peter 1:19; Hebrews 9:14) By His death on the cross we have been redeemed; purchased and brought back to God. Because of the power of Jesus' blood, as long as we remain in our relationship with Him we too can be a suitable offering to God.

In Paul's letter to the church at Colossae we read. . .
"(21) And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, (22) he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, IN ORDER TO PRESENT YOU holy and BLAMELESS and above reproach before him," (Colossians 1:21-22 ESV)

The word translated "blameless" is from the Greek word "amomos" which is translated "without blemish" [the preferred translation according to Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] as well as "without blame", "unblameable", "faultless", and "without fault". It is this Greek word that is used in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) with reference to the sacrifices done under the old law, especially in passages of Leviticus, Numbers, Psalms and Ezekiel. Because of Christ such is God's view of us so that we can become the "LIVING SACRIFICES" Paul urged his Roman readers to present their bodies to being. (Romans 12:1)

Let us continually consider the condition of our life being offered in holy service to God. May we praise God for the purification we have received in Christ while we live "as children of God WITHOUT BLEMISH in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world." (Philippians 2:15 ESV).

Have a great day BLESSED TO LIVE AS A PLEASING OFFERING TO GOD!

Two Powerful Motivators!

The story has been told of a young man who decided to take a shortcut home through a cemetery one night. It was difficult to see in the shadows, and as he walked he ended up falling into an open grave. He tried jumping, tried pulling in a little dirt from the sides to stand on, but with everything he tried he could not climb out. Finally he decided to save his strength, go to sleep and wait till morning for help. In the meantime another fellow -- who apparently decided to take the same shortcut -- also ended up falling into the same open grave. As this man was threshing around trying to climb out, the first man was awakened and said with a chuckle, "You can't get out of here!" ... But HE DID!

Motivation sometimes works miracles. Different things motivate at different times and in different ways yet -- at least for the moment -- just as powerfully.

FEAR can be a powerful motivator. FEAR can get one to run faster or even move heavier objects than is possible under ordinary circumstances. FEAR is also what motivates some to do what is right. To the church in Rome Paul wrote. . .

"(3) For rulers are not a TERROR to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no FEAR of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, (4) for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be AFRAID, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. (5) Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience." (Romans 13:3-5 ESV)

However, another powerful motivator is LOVE. Just like fear, LOVE can make it possible for one to use more strength than would be present under ordinary circumstances. LOVE also is a powerful motivator to persevere in doing what is right. To the church in Corinth Paul referred to this motivator working in his life when he said . . .

"FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST CONTROLS US, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;" (2 Corinthians 5:14 ESV)

The New King James Version states "the LOVE of Christ COMPELS us." Usually motivation by fear is short-lived. However, the motivating power of LOVE is enduring. May Christ's LOVE compel us to press on faithfully as servants of God. Focus on that LOVE. Appreciate it. Allow it to be the powerful influence in all areas of our lives.

Have a great day MOTIVATED BY LOVE!

Being Shut Out!

Being shut out of where we want to be can be very disheartening. To be excluded can be a blow to our esteem. Especially when we feel we have something good to offer, we want to be there to help make a difference in life. Knowing how we feel in spite of our limited wisdom, consider what God's view is when He watches humanity shut Him and His Wisdom out as they pursue their own ideals.

Note the following charge against God's people during the time of Isaiah.
"(14) Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for TRUTH HAS STUMBLED IN THE PUBLIC SQUARES, and UPRIGHTNESS CANNOT ENTER." (Isaiah 59:14 ESV)

That doesn't seem like a very far cry from scenes we might witness today. In the public affairs of life there are many who cause TRUTH to stumble as the righteousness of God is kept from being allowed to enter into the discussions of life. In the attempt to "shut up" Christians the wisdom of God is being "shut out" and the life God desires to bless humanity with even within this realm is being missed out on. TRUTH is being trampled rather than upheld by a world so busy running after its own desires.

Jesus -- Who is "THE TRUTH" (John 14:6) -- became a "stumbling stone" for those who would not accept Him (Romans 9:32; 1 Peter 2:8; 1 Corinthians 1:23) as was prophesied. (Luke 20:17-18; Psalm 118:22) However, by accepting THE TRUTH and carrying it with us we will not be found to be stumbling over it. May the wisdom of God be carried out in our life in a manner that others will see its evidence and begin to open the door of their life wider to it.

Have a great day CONTINUING TO CARRY TRUTH THROUGH DAILY LIFE!

Keeping It Fresh!

Some people seem to be completely soured on life. Certainly some of life's experiences are challenging to say the least. However, there are many good life experiences as well. We could easily list on paper many of the things we might dislike about life, but could we not also come up with a long list of the things associated with the blessed side? The problem with some people is they have chosen to focus on the wrong list. Someone has stated, "Ingratitude curdles the milk of human kindness." [source: "1600 Squibs And Quips, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

There are many who seem to take the kindnesses of others for granted. Perhaps they feel such is owed them. When this is the perception, not only can it sour the giving spirit within those individuals, but it can also sour the giving spirit of those who have been the givers within families, within society at large, and also within the church. Still, ultimately we must not forget the GRATITUDE that should be properly and regularly directed toward God.

As Paul urged the church at Corinth to follow through in the help they had promised to provide for others, we read. . .
"(11) You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us WILL PRODUCE THANKSGIVING TO GOD. (12) For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also OVERFLOWING IN MANY THANKSGIVINGS TO GOD." (2 Corinthians 9:11-12 ESV)

The most appropriate response is to THANK GOD on either side of the picture here. To be the recipient one ought to THANK GOD. To be the giver, one ought to THANK GOD for being in the blessed position to give.

Paul urged those at Ephesus toward. . .
"(20) GIVING THANKS ALWAYS AND FOR EVERYTHING TO GOD the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ," (Ephesians 5:20 ESV)

When we continue to focus on that for which we should be THANKFUL, oh how sweet the outlook on life becomes. Let us continually bear in mind how the key to life's outlook is through maintaining a proper up-look toward God. May the spirit of THANKSGIVING always be fresh within us.

Have a great day MAINTAINING A GRATITUDE ATTITUDE!

Expect It!

Peer pressure is not always easy to resist. There is the desire to belong and to be accepted by our peers and regardless of how young or old we might be, that pressure can be strong. However, I think the pull may be stronger among youth because personal identity is still in the process of being established. As one grows older and more convicted of certain things, the less concern there might be as to what others think. Still, young or old, we must remain on guard.

Peter exhorted. . .
"(3) For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. (4) With respect to this THEY ARE SURPRISED WHEN YOU DO NOT JOIN THEM in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; (5) but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead." (1 Peter 4:3-5 ESV)

"Debauchery" is simply immoral behavior or unrestrained self-indulgence in such behavior. This refers back to the list Peter began with in verse three. Have you been invited to join in any activities that might be associated with anything on that list? Have any such things been a part of your past? If so, it may take some of your former friends some time to realize the changes in your life are genuine; that you are very serious about them.

The New Living Translation reads: "... your former friends are very surprised when you no longer join them in the wicked things they do, and they say evil things about you." [NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House, Wheaton, Ill.]

And "The Message" translation reads: "...Of course, your old friends don't understand why you don't join in with the old gang anymore." [E.H. Peterson, © 2002, NavPress, Colorado Springs, Colorado]

Don't be SURPRISED by the SURPRISE of your peers when you don't join in with them. Let them be SURPRISED! They don't understand your mindset or the values you hold. However, not giving into their pressure will make the difference clear.
We know the One to Whom we will give an account and hopefully in time can help others recognize that as well. Living with that in mind, may we pray that the wisdom of our choices and the lack of regret with which we are blessed to live will eventually be acknowledged by those around us!

Have a great day ANTICIPATING SUCH SURPRISE!

Bite Size!

When we bite off more than we can chew we are likely to choke. Just as this is true with consuming food, so it is also true with consuming life. We choke when we overfill our schedules or when we are concerning ourselves so much with what may happen tomorrow that we are unable to deal with the things of today! Someone has stated: "Life is a trial, mile by mile. Life is hard, yard by yard. But it's a cinch, inch by inch." [source: bulletin clipping] Since life is filled with varied situations and challenges, how are we trying to handle it?

Jesus urged. . .
"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34 ESV)

Jesus was dealing with the subject of anxiety or worry in life. In that context He tried to draw the attention of trust toward the Heavenly Father. (Matthew 6:30-32) We are urged not to borrow from tomorrow. God gives us life in DAILY DOSES. His wisdom tells us this is the best way to handle life. Properly handling each day as it comes will also protect from the stuff of yesterday being dragged into the new day. For one to procrastinate is to create their own anxiety. Dealing with life's cares and concerns in the DAILY DOSES with which God doles out life, we will find such is sufficient to deal with as we trust God to provide the wisdom and energy to work things out.

Have a great day WISELY LIVING LIFE'S MORSELS AS THEY COME!

Tastes!

There are some foods that when they are tasted, some people are immediately ready to dive in and gorge themselves. These foods taste SO GOOD they just can't seem to get enough. Then there are times when one might taste a food that just does not delight the taste buds at all.

An interesting thing about taste is that it can change. Foods that at one time did not seem good may at some point be found to be delicious. Even foods that might have almost made one gag at one point in time might be thoroughly enjoyed at some other point in life. Clam chowder was such a food for me. When my mother realized I just could not stand it, she let me have potato soup (she held out the clams) while the rest of the family had the chowder. However, several years ago my wife talked me into tasting some clam chowder at a restaurant and ever since, if chowder is a menu option it is what I will delightfully order.

Food tastes, clothing tastes, tastes of music, etc. -- may be seen as transitory. Some things have the capacity to grow on us and we begin to appreciate and greatly desire them even though that may not have always been the perspective. Perhaps, because we have found the Lord Jesus to be SO GOOD, we wonder why others aren't as eagerly drawn to partake of the relationship as well.

In Peter's first letter we read. . .
"(1) So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (2) Like newborn infants, LONG FOR THE PURE SPIRITUAL MILK, that by it you may grow up into salvation -- (3) IF INDEED YOU HAVE TASTED THAT THE LORD IS GOOD." (1 Peter 2:1-3 ESV)

We must understand how some "tastes" need to be left behind. There are better things to set our craving on. Having "tasted that the LORD IS GOOD", is He and all that relates to Him continuing to be the taste of which we just can't get enough? As we enjoy our life in the Lord, may we do so in a manner that the appetite of others might be encouraged to take a taste and begin to develop a liking for HIS GOODNESS as well. Some may appear to be spiritually "lactose" intolerant. They refuse to even accept one little taste of the "pure spiritual milk" of the truth of the Gospel that brings salvation. It may take them a while to realize HOW GOOD He is, but let us continue to encourage others toward that acceptance. If those around us see how much we are enjoying Jesus and the great spiritual health that is ours because of Him, they may at some point give in to learning to develop a taste for HIS GOODNESS as well.

Have a great day KEEPING THE CRAVING FOR CHRIST!

Going With The Flow!

Often when people talk about going with the flow, they are expressing the idea of moving along the path of least resistance; going with the direction life or others seem to already be moving. Such a statement seems to imply no personal resistance against that movement as well. Consider the flow of water. When it begins rushing, its course sometimes moves beyond the control of men. Water in great volume has power to go where it wills, forging its way by even pushing obstructions out of its way. However, water can also be channeled by the use of canals and irrigation ditches to direct the flow of water in a manner that will bring benefit to crops.

Solomon noted. . .
"The king's heart is a stream of water IN THE HAND OF THE LORD; HE TURNS IT WHEREVER HE WILL." (Proverbs 21:1 ESV)

As water can be channeled without changing its nature, so it is with mankind. Reading through the Old Testament we find a number of examples of kings who were used by God to serve His purposes -- such as He did with Pharaoh (Exodus 9:16 & 10:1-2) and Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1) -- even though it may not have changed their HEARTS. However, should such influence not be OUR HEART'S DESIRE; to willingly yield to the direction of the hand of God so that our life will flow where He desires it to flow and thus be a part of the working out of His Sovereign Will?

A HEART SURRENDERED in the hand of God; a life directed by Him to where there is the greatest benefit according to His Will. That is the flow of which we should WHOLE HEARTEDLY desire for our life to be channeled. God's plans will be fulfilled (Proverbs 19:21), so being open to "going with the flow" of God will allow our life to be used by Him in a blessed manner.

Have a great day LIVING IN THE STREAM OF GOD'S WORKS!

Friends!

Friends! Isn't it wonderful to have friends? Can we have too many of them? However, are not some friends more special than others? Friends are those we like to see or hear from on a regular basis. Friends are individuals with whom we like to do things. A friend is also a wonderful thing TO BE. Friendships that are only one-sided usually do not last very long!

We sing a song about "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." [words by Joseph Scriven, 1855] I hope we believe it. I also hope we have grown to appreciate that relationship. Would we not consider Jesus to be a Very Special Friend? However, what does it truly mean to BE A FRIEND of Jesus?

Jesus told His disciples. . .
"You are MY FRIENDS IF you do what I command you." (John 15:14 ESV)

It is not enough to simply say we're a friend. Friendship is more than a label to wear. The friendship needs to be shown in some way. James made this clear when noting the life of Abraham.

We read. . .
"(22) You see that FAITH WAS ACTIVE ALONG WITH HIS WORKS, and faith was completed by his works; (23) and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness' -- and HE WAS CALLED A FRIEND OF GOD." (James 2:22-23 ESV)

There in the life of Abraham we find true friendship revealed through faith and actions working together. We want to hold on to our friendship with the Father and the Son, but how well are we doing at SHOWING OUR FRIENDSHIP in return? Let us live in such a manner that we can be seen as true friends of God. True friendship is lived!

Have a great day SHOWING WHAT TRUE FRIENDSHIP IS ALL ABOUT!

Defying Geography

Geography can separate through various means: mountains, gorges, rivers, oceans, and continents. These separations are overcome by highways, bridges, boats and planes. Still there are the elements of weather that may temporarily disrupt and delay these means of connection (works of hands) from taking place. However, God has provided a gift of His Creation that can defy geography in spite of the weather or other factors.

In Paul's first letter to the church at Thessalonica we read. . .
"(17) But since WE WERE TORN AWAY FROM YOU, brothers, for a short time, IN PERSON NOT IN HEART, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, (18) because we wanted to come to you -- I, Paul, again and again -- but Satan hindered us." (1 Thessalonians 2:17-18 ESV)

Paul had a longing for his brethren at Thessalonica. He had a great desire to be physically among them. Even Satan had hindered their coming together face to face. However, Paul mentioned in spite of having been torn away from them, there was a HEART-TO-HEART connection that remained strong!

Though geography may grieve longing HEARTS, it does not disconnect loving HEARTS. I am thrilled by some of the HEART CONNECTIONS "teEn-MAIL" has brought me into though many of these individuals I may never see face to face this side of Heaven. Christians connected to each other by the blood of Jesus and being guided by Him as His "one body" (Rom. 12:5; 1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 2:16; Eph. 4:4; Col. 3:15) throughout the world can enjoy a oneness even though mountains, oceans and continents may separate us in the flesh. Praise God for His power in drawing HEARTS together in a bond that circles this globe and even encompasses Heaven itself.

Have a great day ENJOYING THE CONNECTION LIFE IN CHRIST PROVIDES!

Rolling The Work!

In life people use expressions like "on a roll" or "roll with the punches" to describe the manner in which they respond or move through varying situations. While some struggle with their life circumstances, others seem to be able to just roll with whatever life hands them and press on in spite of it all. Challenges arise and they just roll on appearing to go unphased and unstopped from ongoing godly activity.

Solomon stated. . .
"COMMIT YOUR WORK TO THE LORD, and your plans will be established." (Proverbs 16:3 ESV)

What does the committing of our work to the Lord have to do with rolling? According to Strong's Lexicon, the Hebrew word translated "commit" literally means "to roll." The encouragement appears to be toward rolling over as in transferring or giving the work OVER TO THE LORD; entrusting it to Him for success. To do so lifts a great burden from our shoulders as His strength and timing of fruitfulness are relied upon.

Let us submissively resign ourselves to the wisdom and power of God for the establishment of the plans of life. Rolling our reliance OVER TO GOD in the undertaking of the works of this life, we can then roll on WITH HIM knowing that whatever pleases Him to do in and through us will be able to please us as well.

Have a great day ON A ROLL WITH THE WORK OF GOD!

Putting It Out There!

It has been stated that "There are those who cast their bread upon the waters hoping it will be returned toasted and buttered." [source: 1600 Squibs And Quips", compiled by E. C. McKenzie] The first part of this concept comes from Ecclesiastes (which we will note in a moment). However, the latter part of this quotation appears to be indicative of the spirit of one who is eager and willing to GIVE as long as the personal benefit is grand. Perhaps their expectation is for a huge return even where there has been only minimal effort. This focus is not based upon the desire to give to meet needs, but rather to give when it will ultimately benefit self. Such is the spirit Jesus warned against when He stated. . .

"(33) And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. (34) And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount." (Luke 6:33-34 ESV)

In viewing life, Solomon urged. . .
"Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days." (Ecclesiastes 11:1 ESV)

Some have taken the first part of this chapter (and especially this verse) to focus on enterprise in the sense of being willing to put it out there if you want a return. The focus on the wording has been of the water representing the sending of goods out by ship and it taking some time for the return of the profits. However, it seems to me (and I could be wrong) that this verse taken with those that follow focuses on the need for a GIVING spirit. The encouragement is to just do it even when we don't know the outcome.

The good we do today may not produce immediate results. Still, we are urged to continue putting it out there. Such GIVING leaves the results in the hands of God as we don't always know what actions might either provide the most benefit for others or ourselves. As we see opportunities and the needs of other, let us refrain from a self-centered focus and simply GIVE. Often a natural consequence our own generosity in life is to be met by the generosity and kindness of others. However, as we GIVE, let us ultimately recognize the greatest reward is that which comes from our Heavenly Father. (Matthew 6:3-4) The proverbial "bread" we cast upon the waters may simply bring the "nourishment" another needs.

Have a great day WILLING TO RELEASE FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS!

A Test!

The durability or quality of things is tested by various means. There are heat tests, stress tests, tests through submission to the elements (weather), etc. Similar testing reveals the true essence of our being as well. How does our life stand up?

Solomon stated. . .
"The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and A MAN IS TESTED BY HIS PRAISE." (Proverbs 27:21 ESV)

Heat is used to test as well as refine silver and gold. When we face trials in life we may feel we are also being tested by fire and how we come through the challenges reveals something about our character. However, even the PRAISE we receive can create a real challenge and reveal what our character truly is. PRAISE can do a variety of things to people. It can encourage them, inflate them, or influence by flattery to go a certain direction regardless of whether it is right or not. Remember what happened to Herod when we accepted the PRAISE that should have gone to God! (Acts 12:21-23)

It has been noted that vain men seek PRAISE, weak men are inflated by PRAISE, and wise men disregard PRAISE. The wise do not allow the PRAISE of others to go to their head, but instead remain modest, thus revealing the genuineness of humility.

Earlier Solomon had stated a similar proverb, but with a different ending.
"The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the LORD TESTS HEARTS." (Proverbs 17:3 ESV)

Not only what PRAISE, but whose PRAISE we allow to influence us is important. To be able to remain humble in the midst of PRAISE reveals the focus of life is not so much on self as it is on striving to simply live in accordance with what is right. This is what marks the life of those who seek the PRAISE of God more than the PRAISE of men. (note John 12:43) Can we accept PRAISE and still remain more drawn toward what God thinks of us than mankind? If so, we are passing the test!

Have a great day ENCOURAGED, BUT NOT PUFFED UP BY COMMENDATION!

Beauty!

It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is true that a lot depends on the perspective we take or the vantage point from which our view has been aimed. Life does have its ugly side and much of that is associated with sin. However, life lived with a perspective of God's plan can help us see beauty where others can't.

As Solomon addressed life lived under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1) he stated. . .
"(9) What gain has the worker from his toil? (10) I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. (11) HE HAS MADE EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL IN ITS TIME. Also, HE HAS PUT ETERNITY INTO MAN'S HEART, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (12) I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; (13) also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil -- this is God's gift to man." (Ecclesiastes 3:19-13 ESV)

Through a worldly eye it is not always easy to see the beauty in all the places where it may be. However, when we consider life in its connection to our relationship with God the beauty can be seen. When Solomon began his list of the varying experiences of life having their time, he included both BIRTH AND DEATH. (Ecclesiastes 3:2)

This past Sunday afternoon I led a memorial service for my father-in-law with family gathered around the garden in which he had spent much time over the years. During the sharing of memories, one of my wife's nephews commented that the two most beautiful things he had witnessed in his life were the birth of his son and now most recently the last breath of his grandfather as he peacefully slipped from this life. We too had found great comfort in watching him peacefully pass and through the deliverance by death win the battle over the cancer that had been bringing him so much pain.

When we consider the events of BIRTH AND DEATH, there is the flow of tears with both. On the one hand there are tears of joy and on the other, tears of mourning the loss of a loved one. To view death as but a door into an eternity with God, those tears of sorrow can also be mingled with tears of joy as we too look forward to the eternity Solomon said God has placed in man's heart.

As we recognize the beauty that can be associated with both the beginning and end of our life's journey here -- two events that should be trustingly placed in the hands of God -- let us press on mindful of doing good as long as we live. (Ecclesiastes 3:12) That too is beautiful in its time.

Have a great day TRUSTING THE ONE WHO HAS LIFE'S WHOLE SCHEME IN VIEW!

Seeking The Right?

There was a four-year-old boy walking to the car with his mother following Bible class who said, "Mom, I'm not going to sin anymore." The mother was joyful to hear such a statement from her son, but she wondered what might have prompted it. Her child's response was, "Jesus said if you don't sin, you can throw the first stone, and I want to throw the first stone." [adapted from bulletin clipping]

There is something about throwing stones that seems to delight children; especially boys. I can remember a time in my younger years when I was actually prohibited from picking up any rocks at all so as to keep me from throwing them. However, gaining "the right" to throw stones was not what Jesus was attempting to emphasize in the account of the woman who had been caught in the act of adultery (John 8), and we need to mature toward that proper understanding.

Noting the latter part of the text we read. . .
"(7) And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.' (8) And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. (9) But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. (10) Jesus stood up and said to her, 'Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?' (11) She said, 'No one, Lord.' And Jesus said, 'NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU; GO, AND FROM NOW ON SIN NO MORE.'" (John 8:7-11 ESV)

We should remember the only One Who was there Who was without sin -- and therefore had "the right" to throw the first stone -- did not pick any up. Jesus did not condemn, but neither did he condone. Instead, He urged her to leave sin behind.
If our aim is to be Christ-like, what should be the motivation of our own actions? Peter urged toward LOVING earnestly because love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8) By leaving the stones on the ground we have hands left free to EMBRACE and help LIFT others up from the sins that would weigh them down as we also encourage them to leave those sins behind. May we COMPASSIONATELY and MERCIFULLY follow the example of Jesus as we humbly recognizing we also have our own challenge with sin.

Do You Read Me?

Do you read me? Am I coming in clear? Is there too much static? Does the volume need adjusting? Do I need to change my frequency?

Do you read me? Is the message cluttered? Is the print fading? Can you make any sense of it? Is the frequency of the message adequately signifying its importance?

Many may be living lives that are like an "open book", but what is written on those pages? As we live our life it is good to keep in mind the adage, "You may be the only Bible some people read." Certainly we ought to help people understand the need for becoming familiar with God's Word and the value of regular reading and Bible study. However, it may take SEEING IT IN OUR LIFE before others develop an interest to study for themselves. As we go about our day to day activities can the message be clearly read or have we cluttered our life with so much other stuff that what is written is undistinguishable from the messages offered by the world?

In his second letter to the church at Corinth, Paul noted. . .
"(2) You yourselves are our LETTER of recommendation, written on our hearts, to be KNOWN AND READ BY ALL. (3) And you show that YOU ARE A LETTER FROM CHRIST delivered by us, WRITTEN not with ink but WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD, not on tablets of stone but ON TABLETS OF HUMAN HEARTS." (2 Corinthians 3:2-3 ESV)

God's wisdom for life is not to be revealed in theory, but in its practical application to -- and practice in -- life. As we accept God's message it is to be TRANSLATED INTO LIVING! How is the world reading us? Is God's standard being muddled or is it clearly legible in the manner in which we go about our daily life?

Let us live life to God's glory so that what is written there will be worth reading. As the pages of our life are turned, let us aim for each to reveal how God's standards are relevant for every aspect of life.

Have a great day LIVING AS GOD'S OPEN BOOK!

What "R" We?

We may wonder about the manner in which some friends treat each other. Perhaps we have heard it said, "With friends like that, who needs enemies." Even David had the experience of what was once a close friend turning against him. (Psalm 41:9) [Note also Psalm 55:12-13] Besides this challenge among friends there are also family members who don't always treat each other as family. David himself noted how he had become a stranger to his brothers and an alien to his mother's sons. (Psalm 69:8) As we note there is only a one letter difference between "friend" and "fiend" we should seriously consider what we "r" striving to be! We have very little control over how others might choose to treat us, but we do have control over the manner in which we treat them and our own actions have great potential to even win an enemy over into becoming a friend.

Solomon noted. . .
"A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is A FRIEND WHO STICKS CLOSER THAN A BROTHER." (Proverbs 18:24 ESV)

Yes, it is possible for one to have many companions or associations and be ruined by them. However, what a blessing to have A FRIEND WHO IS LIKE FAMILY! Perhaps the words of this proverb bring to mind the One Who was a friend to "tax collectors and sinners." (Matthew 11:19) "R" we trying to imitate Christ as the true Friend He is to us?

When it comes to specifically friends and family, what is the key to maintaining these relationships in a proper manner? Perhaps we might agree that friends should always be treated as friends and family should always be treated as family. However, when we note the SPECIALNESS of true friendships and the CLOSENESS of endeared family relationships, someone has suggested: "Treat your family like friends and your friends like family." [source: calendar quote] I think there is some real power there in drawing such relationships closer to the way they ought to be. May the kind we "r" glorify God and bless those connected to our life.

Have a great day BEING A BROTHERLY OR SISTERLY FRIEND!

Living Unworthy Lives!

The Scriptures exhort us to live (or walk) in a manner worthy of our calling; living that reveals a sincere desire to please the Lord. (Colossians 1:10) [note also Ephesians 4:1; Philippians 1:27; 1 Thessalonians 2:12] Being called to live as followers of Jesus, our life is to reflect an appreciation for the salvation we have in Him. Our life is also to be a testimony of thankfulness to God for all the blessings He has provided and the sure hope He has laid before us. However, there is a sense in which such living may be marked by an unworthiness.

As the Hebrew writer brought his long list of heroes and heroines of faith to a close, he stated. . .
"(36) Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. (37) They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated -- (38) OF WHOM THE WORLD WAS NOT WORTHY -- wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth." (Hebrews 11:36-38 ESV)

"Of whom THE WORLD was not worthy." Due to our refusal to be conformed to THIS WORLD (Romans 12:2), THE WORLD may not value us. In our effort to live godly lives we may even be considered the "scum of THE WORLD." (1 Corinthians 4:13) However, the fact God sent His Son to die for us reveals His perception of our value. Is this acknowledgment reflected in the manner in which we live? Walking worthy of THIS WORLD may make us no better than THE WORLD. It is through living unworthy of THIS WORLD that we -- like Christ -- can be of the most good in and for THIS WORLD.

It is not until THE WORLD rightly values God and the wisdom of His Will that it will rightly value us. Let us remember -- like those of whom the Hebrew writer referred -- God has something better in mind for us than what THIS WORLD can offer. (Hebrews 11:39-40) To be considered unworthy of THIS WORLD is an indicator of living prepared for the next; the eternal realm of God. May we find the steadfast joy of living the life that seeks above all the approval of God.

Have a great day BEING THE MOST BENEFIT TO THE WORLD BY LIVING FOR THE PRAISE OF GOD!

Beyond Confession!

The statement has been made that confession is good for the soul. Though getting things out can provide a real sense of having a great weight lifted from our shoulders, is mere confession enough? Certainly we must we willing to acknowledge that which is not right in our life. Without that recognition we will be blinded to what needs to be changed. However, where ought we to go from there?

Solomon noted that which needs to accompany our confession.
"Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who CONFESSES AND FORSAKES them will obtain mercy." (Proverbs 28:13 ESV)

Coupled with the honesty to confess is to be a willingness to FORSAKE. If we confess the wrong, but are unwilling to FORSAKE it, we are then guilty of FORSAKING the Will of God and His direction for our life. To deliberately go on sinning is not the path to mercy, but rather movement toward the fury of God. (note Hebrews 10:26-27)

By the grace of God His mercy has been made available to us through Christ. In Christ we become "a new creation." (2 Corinthians 5:17) Is that change becoming more and more evident in our daily life? Let our confession of sins be followed by the FORSAKING of them so that we can be blessed with the life that leaves no regret (2 Corinthians 7:10); the glorious result of true penitence. May both our mouth and our life clearly declare the wisdom of the righteous life God desires us to live.

Have a great day RENOUNCING THE WRONG TO RESIDE IN THE RIGHT!

Keeping The Eyes!

Sometimes a child walking through a toy store appears to have their eyes popping out as they view all the wonderful things lining the shelves. They may even be seen to run from item to item as a desire to have it all begins to well up from within. Perhaps this child is told, "Get your eyes back in your head. You can only have one thing." Is such a FOCUS outgrown?

There are events and objects that are sometimes referred to as "eye catching". They have the power to immediately grab one's attention. However, there is still the need to exercise the wisdom of restraint before rushing into whatever may be attracting the FOCUS.

As Solomon noted a general look at life, he stated. . .
"(13) Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. (14) The WISE PERSON HAS HIS EYES IN HIS HEAD, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the same event happens to all of them." (Ecclesiastes 2:13-14 ESV)

Both the wise and the fool will have their life brought to an end by death. However, what is the FOCUS while living? Are the eyes popping out of the head or kept in control so that proper discretion for living can take place? The great challenge for the fool is where they have allowed their eyes to wander.

Among Solomon's proverbs we read. . .
"THE DISCERNING SETS HIS FACE TOWARD WISDOM, but THE EYES OF A FOOL ARE ON THE ENDS OF THE EARTH." (Proverbs 17:24 ESV)

The New Living Translation reads. . .
"SENSIBLE PEOPLE KEEP THEIR EYES GLUED ON WISDOM, but A FOOL'S EYES WANDER TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH." (Proverbs 17:24 NLT] [© 1997, Tyndale House, Wheaton, Ill.]

Through the wisdom of maintaining control as the eyes overlook the varying matters of life, wisdom enables one to look over life situations from all angles so as to weigh the consequences of what is about to be undertaken. This is in contrast to the foolish who are pictured as being drawn about groping in darkness as if there is no power of reason to guide.

Note Paul's prayer for those at Ephesus.
"(16) I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, (17) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you A SPIRIT OF WISDOM and of revelation in the knowledge of him, (18) having the EYES OF YOUR HEARTS ENLIGHTENED, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints," (Ephesians 1:16-18 ESV)

May the eyes of our heart be enlightened so that we may have proper discernment in what our FOCUS is drawn toward. Knowing on what our hope rests, let us keep our eyes in our head, maintaining the sense to keep the "eyes glued on wisdom" and the things associated with the Will of God and the eternity He has in store for us.

Have a great day DEMONSTRATING THE VISION OF WISE DISCERNMENT!

Hugging!

[09/10/2008 "teEn-MAIL"]

HUGGING!

I am blessed to be in a congregation of "huggers"! Hugging is good. The hugs tell me I am accepted and loved. Sometimes those hugs are gripping manly hugs while others are a bit more gentle, but all seem to convey the same message.

When I think about children giving their parents or other adults a hug, it is not quite as easy as what we might give each other. A child might be stooped down to or picked up in order for their tiny arms to reach around an adult's neck. Perhaps we have all seen a child hugging tightly to the leg of a parent. Since their arms are too small to wrap around the whole person, they hug or HOLD ON TIGHT to the part they are able to get their arms around.

The great God we serve loves us tremendously. Through various life experiences we may sense His loving embrace more at some moments than at others. But how do we EMBRACE GOD? When we consider the immenseness of God we might rightfully acknowledge the difficulty of wrapping our tiny human arms around His whole Being. However, even though there are aspects of God difficult to completely wrap our mind around, as His children we can still find comfort in what we are able to HOLD ONTO. In that HOLDING we should find great comfort and strength.

The Hebrew writer encouragingly exhorted. . .
"(23) Let us HOLD FAST THE CONFESSION OF OUR HOPE without wavering, for HE WHO PROMISED IS FAITHFUL." (Hebrews 10:23 ESV)

and . . .

"(17) So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, (18) so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE set before us." (Hebrews 6:17-18 ESV)

Embracing the trustworthiness of God ought to bring us a great sense of security in life. When there is much around us we may not understand, HOLDING FAST to a hope based on His steadfast promises should provide a great sense of comfort. May we continue to HOLD TIGHTLY to the aspects of God we are able to as we continue to grow up in trusting Him more.

Have a great day CONFIDENTLY GRIPPING THE GREATNESS OF GOD!

Character Of The Established! (part 14 of 14)

What is the STABILITY of those who are having such character established in their life?

David encouraged:
". . .He who does these things shall never be moved." (Psalm 15:5c ESV)

There are some who think they are standing on "stable ground" when in reality (if they would take a close look around and even take a sniff) will find they are more on something like the "stable grounds". All things aside from that which Paul found in Christ had become as "dung" to him. (note Philippians 3:7-9) Where have we sought to be established?

Standing with God and for what He has decreed -- that is the realm of STABILITY. It is through the development of such character as He desires to instill within us that will contribute to security in life. It is here that we will find stable ground on which to stand. By hearing the message of God and acting upon it, we reveal that our life is being established and built on a rock. (note Matthew 7:24-27)

May we continue to be open to God's work of image renewal. Let us allow Him to establish the godly character our world needs to see modeled. And then may those around us be able to see the STABILITY God is able to bring to our life.

Have a great day STANDING UNSHAKEABLE WITH GOD!

Character Of The Established! (part 13 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one who. . .
". . .does not take a bribe against the innocent. . . ." (Psalm 15:5b ESV)

It has been said that everybody has their price. Is that true with us? Can we be bought? Can we be persuaded away from what is right and true? Could we allow money to shade our judgment? To pervert justice and show partiality is a sin. (note James 2:1-9) Is justice truly blind? How well are we at being impartial?

As followers of God we should always stand for that which is right and just. May we NEVER SELL OURSELVES OUT at any price.

Character Of The Established! (part 12 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one. . .
". . .who does not put out his money at interest. . ." (Psalm 15:5a ESV)

We seem to live in a world where many people give as long as there is something in it for themselves. If the deed can be reciprocated they will give. If there is a tax benefit, they will be charitable. If it will gain attention, the check will be written.

God, looking out for His people, established regulations under the Old Law regarding the charging of interest. (i.e. Exodus 22:25-27) As freely as God had provided, He wanted His people to provide when they had it to give and saw another in need. It was through such means God's people would be provided for regardless of stature.

Jesus taught the principle is this way:
"And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount." (Luke 6:34 ESV)

Jesus also taught against making a show of the giving. (Matthew 6:1-4)

God has blessed us so that we can be a blessing to others. And whatever we do in service to man and to the glory of God, will not go without its reward from Him -- even if it is just a cup of cold water needed. (note Matthew 10:42) Those who know God and have received His blessings, have been called to a higher standard of conduct. May we have a willingness to give as freely as we have been given.

Character Of The Established! (part 11 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one. . .
". . .who swears to his own hurt and does not change;" (Psalm 15:4c ESV)

The context here deals with an oath or promise. It is so easy to commit to something on the spur of the moment. However, is it as easy to follow through? It has amazed me how easy it is for people to tell me they will do something and then not follow through. How much of a sense of ACCOUNTABILITY do we feel regarding commitments made?

Jesus noted those who seemed to play games regarding commitments made. (note Matthew 23:16-22 & Mark 7:9-13) David, on the other hand, noted one who -- even if his oath was made rashly -- had enough character to honor it. This is the person whose word can be COUNTED UPON. This is the person who has enough stability they can be DEPENDED UPON. May we refresh those around us through living as persons of our word. After all, aren't you glad God is true to His?

Have a great day KNOWN AS ONE WHO FOLLOWS THROUGH!

Character Of The Established! (part 10 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one who. . .
". . .honors those who fear the LORD; . . ." (Psalm 15:4b ESV)

Our world does not always honor the most honorable. Sometimes those worthy of honor are despised while the intemperate and worldly are given the glory. What marks the focus of our life? Where are we willing to stand when sides are to be chosen?

David here noted the one who acknowledged those of a kindred spirit in the Lord. We do well to note those from whom words of direction, encouragement, and strength should count the most. Do we honor the upright? Do we honor those who walk faithfully with God and hold them up as examples of faith? Are we willing to stand and be numbered with the upright? (note Hebrews 10:33-34)

Our willingness to STAND with God now, readies us to STAND with Him in eternity. (remember Jesus' admonition in Matthew 10:32-33) May we continue to STAND strong where He wants us. In the end God will bestow the honors on such.

Character Of The Established! (part 9 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one. . .
"in whose eyes a vile person is despised, . . ." (Psalm 15:4a ESV)

The vile and the wicked are not to be our heroes. Such are not to be envied or looked up to. These are not the ones with whom we are to cast our lot in life.

Do we want to be where God is? Then do we LOVE THE THINGS GOD LOVES or those of which the world is drawn toward? If our affections are in the wrong place why do we think we would enjoy being where God is? There are some things God views as an abomination. (note Proverbs 6:16-19) It is the very love of what God despises that may separate us from Him. (note 1 John 2:15-17)

If we LOVE THE THINGS GOD LOVES, our affections will be properly focused, and we will be drawn closer in harmony with His Way and Will. May we live with our affections in harmony with God's focus.

Character Of The Established! (part 8 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one who. . .
". . .nor takes up a reproach against his friend;" (Psalm 15:3c ESV)

When we speak of others, what kind of words do we cast out and spread abroad? Do we spread insult and innuendo bringing reproach upon the name of our fellowman? Do we speak ill-will of others? Are we always quick to see the bad in others? Or are we slow to jump to conclusions and quick to see the good in the lives of those around us? Do we join in the gossip or are we willing to nip rumors in the bud and stand up for others, giving them the benefit of the doubt?

May we remember that we will be judged in the way we judge others. (note Matthew 7:2) Let us watch how we talk about others.

Character Of The Established! (part 7 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one who . . .
". . .does no evil to his neighbor, . . ." (Psalm 15:3b ESV)

In the "me first" society in which we live, how much thought do we give to our NEIGHBOR? Are we truly a NEIGHBOR unto those around us? How much mercy do we extend? (note Luke 10:36-37) How much consideration do we give to the needs and rights of others? Are we seen as a hindrance or can we be depended on as a HELP in time of need?

Paul exhorted:
"(9) For the commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,' and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: 'You shall LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' (10) LOVE DOES NO WRONG TO A NEIGHBOR; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." (Romans 13:9-10 ESV)

How much benefit has God brought to our life? Are we hoarding His goodness or trying to pass it on to those around us? To withhold good from others can be just as wrong as a direct wrong action. (note Proverbs 3:27-28)

May we be mindful of our NEIGHBOR in God glorifying ways that they may come to know the great benefits God desires to bring to each life.

Character Of The Established! (part 6 of 14)

Who may dwell with God? David noted the character of such as one. . .
"who does not slander with his tongue. . ." (Psalm 15:3a ESV)

This seems to follow well after the mention of the truthful heart. When our TONGUE begins to wag, what is the result? Are we busy about tearing others down or building them up? Are we a destroyer of reputations (slandering those around us) or are we a supporter and encourager? Are we a "back-biter" or one known for giving a needed verbal "pat on the back"?

May we be mindful of the words we use regarding the lives of others. Remember, the TONGUE has both the power to build up or destroy. Use it to the glory of God and the benefit of those around us.
