No Coasting!
A couple days ago I was determined to leave the car parked. In the morning I took a long walk as I commonly do on my day off. Then in the afternoon I used my bicycle to get where I needed to go and to take care of the errands I needed to run. In our community, regardless of what direction I go there are hills to encounter. Coasting down them is easy. The work comes when having to peddle up them. It is possible to coast uphill for a little ways if there is a good downhill for picking up speed prior to encountering the uphill route. However, that coasting does not last for long. Going uphill on a bicycle requires peddle power or progress will not be made.
When we consider the journey of life, going uphill REQUIRES EFFORT. There is no way around that reality. It requires focus, determination, and persistence to make it to the top. We cannot make it by merely coasting. Coasting will only take us where the downhills lead.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus he noted the effort of his own life in these words:
“I PRESS ON toward the goal for the prize of the UPWARD call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14 ESV)
Paul was not coasting! Paul was PRESSING ON THE UPWARD WAY! We too must remain focused on the upward call. Coasting will only take us down the way of the world. We need to continue pressing on toward the goal. Sometimes our pace can be slowed by the climb, but may the progress continue anyway. Though life has its ups and downs like the physical roads we travel, let us not remain in the valleys, but instead PRESS ONWARD AND UPWARD in the Way of God. May we not choose the easy road because it is, but rather keep on the upward road because it is right and ultimately leads us toward our eternity with God! With each new height we gain, our perspective of life will be broadened to encourage us in His Way!
Have a great day CONTINUING THE JOURNEY MOST WORTH LIFE’S EFFORT!

Pleased To Please!
Sometimes we say “we will” do something simply because it is “our will” and something that pleases us to do. However, there are also times we might say “we will” do something because we know it needs or ought to be done. What motivates us to do what we do is something we would do well to consider on a regular basis. If we don’t, we may find ourselves merely living a self-serving life that negatively impacts our relationship with others and ultimately our relationship with God. The concept of doing “what I want” is what creates conflict not only between family members and neighbors, but also between nations. Personal desires and pleasure are what’s at the root of much of the conflict in this life, including within churches.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi, he urged. . .
“(12) Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, (13) for IT IS GOD WHO WORKS IN YOU, BOTH TO WILL AND TO WORK FOR HIS GOOD PLEASURE.” (Philippians 2:12-13 ESV)
Yes, our salvation is a personal thing. We cannot do it for each other. We each face the decision to obey God as individuals. However, our salvation and relationship with God does not come by having our own way! That is merely “Burger King ®” religion (“Have It Your Way!”). God is the creator of life, and as Christians we need to recognize there is good He created us to fulfill. (note Ephesians 2:10) The challenge we face is that our pleasure and God’s pleasure may not always be the same. In recognizing all that a right relationship with God provides, surrendering to God working His Will and Works in our life for “HIS GOOD PLEASURE” ought to bring us the greatest sense of pleasure we could ever experience. Such submission of our life to His Will will keep us moving the right direction.
May we be sincerely pleased to allow God “both to will and to work for HIS GOOD PLEASURE” in our life. Not only will that bring greater benefit to those around us, but it will also bring the greatest blessings to our life as well.
Have a great day DELIGHTING TO DO THE DESIRES OF GOD!

Not Deserted!
A number of years ago, our family made its first trip into the “Ape Caves” south of Mount Saint Helens in Washington State. There are two sections of these lava tubes that can be explored referred to as the upper and lower caves. I remember touring the lower (easier) section first and having a guide talk about their formation, the group of explorers from which came the name “Ape Caves”, and other interesting information relating to these lava tubes. However, as we stood in a large section of the lower lava tube, upon conclusion of the lecture, our guide said we were on our own. We could explore further into the lower section if we liked or could go through the upper and more difficult section on our own. (This we have done again several times since.)
Perhaps this is where some find themselves in life. Either they have the help of someone offering GUIDANCE for part of the journey and then they are left completely on their own to find their way, or they choose to leave their GUIDE and explore life alone. I was struck by these thoughts yesterday morning as I was reading through several chapters from the Psalms.
The psalmist Asaph wrote. . .
“(23) Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. (24) YOU GUIDE ME WITH YOUR COUNSEL, and AFTERWARD YOU WILL RECEIVE ME TO GLORY.” (Psalm 73:23-24 ESV)
Though we have CONSTANT GUIDANCE available through the Will of God preserved in the pages of Scripture, many do choose to leave the GUIDE behind and explore life by trial and error on their own. The COUNSEL OF GOD is available TO GUIDE us through every step of life. God has lovingly provided a means of avoiding having to blindly find our own way. He is also ready to GUIDE us to the very end; to usher us into His glorious eternity. May we accept that GUIDANCE all the way through our life in this realm.
Have a great day ACCEPTING GOD’S GUIDANCE ALL THE WAY!

A Productive Life!
Sometimes I refer to my walks as therapy because of the positive impact they have on my body and mind. Other walks are simply for the purpose of getting me from one place to another, but still with the positive aspect of saving money on gas by not driving the car. However, things can happen ALONG THE WAY such as the opportunity to make a connection with other people and even offer to do something for them.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he wrote. . .
“(9) And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, (10) SO AS TO WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE LORD, fully pleasing to him, BEARING FRUIT IN EVERY GOOD WORK and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:9-10 ESV)
A walk that is worthy of the Lord -- that reveals an appreciation and thankfulness for the relationship He has made possible and all the blessings that are associated with it -- is not one merely marked by a meandering through life. It is not a walk that has no purpose. Rather, to walk in a worthy manner is an intentional walk, with a definite destination in mind, and an acknowledgment and acceptance of the opportunities to do God’s Will ALL ALONG THE WAY!
We are to be working as we walk. We should be giving as we go. We ought to continue ministering as we move on through the journey of life in this realm. Such is the walk that will bear fruit for the Lord. May we daily be mindful of this being the manner of our life walk.
Have a great day DOING GOOD ON THE GO!

Worthy Conversation!
There are things we may not be able to get off our mind, some of which we might wish we could while others we love to dwell upon. Some of these thoughts can be so significant that no matter what else we are doing we just cannot stop thinking of them. Hopefully thoughts of our Lord fall into that category.
The psalmist declared. . .
“MY MOUTH IS FILLED with your praise, and with your glory ALL THE DAY.” (Psalm 71:8 ESV)
And. . .
“MY MOUTH WILL TELL of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation ALL THE DAY, for their number is past my knowledge.” (Psalm 71:15 ESV)
Perhaps we know people who never seem lacking in having something to say. Days are filled with many conversations. Even those who have nothing to say insist on saying it anyway. The psalmist here seems to have implied a focus on the praise, glory, righteous acts, and deeds of salvation associated with God being so numerous they could easily FILL THE DAY with worthy conversation.
Our acknowledgement of God’s glory and our great sense of appreciation for all His blessings are not expressed only through an inability to get it all off our mind, but also for it to ALWAYS BE ON OUR LIPS! May we be mindful of the opportunities that arise to introduce the things relating to God in our EVERYDAY conversations. The more we appreciate and love what He has done and also holds in store for us, the easier that will be.
Have a great day GIVING OTHERS SOMETHING WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION!

Blessed At Both Ends!
In one of David’s psalms, as he noted some awesome aspects of God’s creation -- as well as the salvation He provides -- the psalmist also made the statement. . .
“so that those who dwell at the ends of the earth are in awe at your signs. YOU MAKE THE GOING OUT OF THE MORNING AND THE EVENING TO SHOUT FOR JOY.” (Psalm 65:8 ESV)
Associated with both ends of the day is the rejoicing of both the RISING OF THE SUN and THE SETTING of it. The transitions of MORNING and EVENING God set into motion and that have continued from the time of His creation are blessings He has provided. It is worth our rejoicing also, because the new day is a sign from God that time goes on for now and we have opportunities to enjoy the life He has given and to fulfill His purposes in it. The setting of the sun is God’s reminder for the work to cease so the body and mind can have their needed rest. Both are gracious gifts of God for which even the wicked should learn to be thankful. (note Matthew 5:45)
Which do we welcome most? Does it not depend on the portion of the day? In the MORNING we welcome the opportunity for activity, but when NIGHT comes -- after a day full of activities -- we welcome the opportunity for the rest the night brings. In this sense we might agree that both are equally glorious blessings from the God Who knows exactly what we need.
I am nearing the end of a couple of weeks that have provided some long days for me because of a meeting we have this weekend and the door knocking and other preparations for it. However, in the midst of all the extra things added to my schedule, God has provided the focus and the time needed for me to get everything done that I normally do, including these daily focuses. Therefore, EACH DAY I have eagerly looked forward to the activities that would go with it and EACH EVENING I have looked forward to the rest the night brings. I am richly blessed.
God is so good. He knows what we need. I hope you also are able to rejoice with the DAWN and the DUSK, welcoming the daily transitions God brings for our benefit.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE WISDOM OF GOD’S DAILY TRANSITIONS!

His Work!
Creation was God’s masterful work. (Genesis 1) It is He Who has the ability to make something from nothing and bring order out of chaos. Though there are those who have claimed to create life, what they have actually done is merely replicate it from that which God had already set into motion through His creation. As the creation in the beginning was God’s work, it appears to remain His work.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, he urged them. . .
“(22) to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, (23) and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, (24) and to put on THE NEW SELF, CREATED AFTER THE LIKENESS OF GOD in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:22-24)
The Greek word used by Paul that is translated “created” is the verb “ktisthenta” and is from “ktizo”. According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, “ktizo” was a word used by the Greeks in reference to founding a place, city, or colony. However, in Scripture the word is always used for the act of God whether it is in reference to the physical creation or spiritual creation (as in our text above). What we become Paul called “the NEW SELF” is still a work of God. We cannot become like Him -- have the original image He designed us to possess (Genesis 1:27) -- “in true righteousness and holiness” without it being His work. Therefore we must be submissive to Him and His Will for that marvelous masterful work to continue. This work begins after we have been united with Christ, for it is in Him that we become a “NEW CREATION.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) As Strong’s Greek Lexicon refers to one of the meanings of this word as being “to make habitable”, it is God Who creates us to become a suitable habitation for “true righteousness and holiness”; His likeness. May we allow God’s wondrous creative work to continue in our life. Remember, He does not make junk!
Have a great day PRAISING THE GOD WHO CAN STILL BRING ORDER OUT OF CHAOS!

High Octane Fuel!
I can remember the days when we would drive into a gas station, have the station attendant run out to the car and we would tell him, “Fill it up with regular”. Today (here in the State of Washington, USA) we usually pump our own gas, though the neighboring state of Oregon only allows station attendants to do this. Some people have vehicles that seem to run better on a higher octane gasoline, so rather than filling up on regular, they choose “Premium” or “Supreme”.
When we think about our own life, have we given due consideration to the “SPIRITUAL OCTANE” on which we are trying to run? If we have merely settled for “regular” it should be no surprise when our life is not running well. As lower grade fuels may not sufficiently clean fuel injectors or aid the engine in working efficiently, the same can be true about our life. It is SUPREME we ought to be filled with and though it does start with “G”, I don’t mean “gas”.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, a part of his prayer for them was. . .
“(19) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, THAT YOU MAY BE FILLED WITH ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD.” (Ephesians 3:19 ESV)
Unless our life is being filled with the “FULLNESS OF GOD” -- acknowledging Him as SUPREME over our life -- our efficiency is going to be hampered. Paul went on to point out that it is God Who has the ability “to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think” by His power working in us. (Ephesians 3:20) We cannot expect the world’s “regular” to sustain us and keep us moving. According to the “specs” with which God designed us as spiritual beings, we need to be FILLED WITH HIM and all that relates to His Sovereign Will. Thus our life will be sufficiently powered to serve God’s Divine purposes and keep us moving steadily on through life to ultimately be transported to where He wants us.
Have a great day TAKING IN MORE OF THE SUPREME!

Confidence!
It is good to have a sense of confidence. Confidence provides a feeling of assurance. Confidence can provide a sense of stability. On the other hand, the lack of confidence can create a climate for hesitation or indecisiveness and perhaps even lead to inaction in life. However, confidence does need to be properly placed because there can be such a thing as “foolish confidence”.
In one of the psalms of the sons of Korah, there is a reference to those who put their “trust in their wealth” and “boast of the abundance of their riches.” (Psalm 49:6) Any of that was of no significant value for rescuing from death so as to enable one to live forever. (Psalm 49:7-9) Even when lands are named after individuals (Psalm 49:11) -- though the name be immortalized, the individual is not -- all eventually go the way of all life. (Psalm 49:12)
We read. . .
“This is THE PATH OF THOSE WHO HAVE FOOLISH CONFIDENCE; yet after them people approve of their boasts.” (Psalm 49:13 ESV)
Though life spans may not be equal, death is a reality of our existence in this realm. It is “foolish confidence” to think we have the means to buy more years. Since whatever time we have in this realm is such a precious commodity, we ought to be wise in how we spend it. Remember Jesus referred to the rich farmer as a “fool” (Luke 12:20) because, though he had worldly wealth, he was “not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21)
Paul pointed toward wise confidence where he stated. . .
“(11) for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, (12) which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I KNOW whom I have believed, and I AM CONVINCED that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me [(or) what I have entrust to him].” (2 Timothy 1:11-12 ESV)
It is wise confidence when it is PLACED IN GOD. In reading Paul’s words I do not detect any wavering. His life was supported by the certainty of a confident conviction IN GOD Who had and would continue to sustain Him and ultimately usher him into eternal glory. That confidence IN GOD, rather than in himself, had the power to persuade Paul to press on even when he was challenged by others. May we also develop a sense of the same confidence in the God Who does have the power to draw us through death’s door into a glorious eternity.
Have a great day CERTAIN OF THE POWER OUR GOD RETAINS!

The Right!
Rights! We enjoy rights of various kinds. Some are clearly established by law. Others are assumed. However, is it possible for individuals to claim rights that may not be rightfully theirs?
The psalmist Asaph wrote. . .
“(16) But to the wicked God says: ‘WHAT RIGHT HAVE YOU TO RECITE MY STATUTES OR TAKE MY COVENANT ON YOUR LIPS? (17) For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.’” (Psalm 50:16-17 ESV)
How many want to lay claim to God’s promises -- even talking about them frequently -- who appear to ignore His commands? God’s promises are a revelation of His love for us, but keeping His commands is the sign of our love for Him. (note John 14:15 & 21 and 1 John 5:3) Is our life expressing that love through a SUBMISSION TO HIS WILL?
There are also those who seem eager to direct God’s commands at others while neglecting to uphold them in their own life. Paul noted such in his letter to the church at Rome. (Romans 2:21-23) Is our love for God reflected in the PERSONAL APPLICATION of His life enhancing principles?
Note the text again from the New Living Translation.
“(16) But God says to the wicked: ‘Recite my laws no longer, and DON’T PRETEND THAT YOU OBEY ME. (17) For YOU REFUSE MY DISCIPLINE and TREAT MY LAWS LIKE TRASH.’” (Psalm 50:16-17 NLT) [© 1997, Wheaton, Ill.: Tyndale House]
Those who truly have the right to recite God’s commands and promises are those who are STRIVING TO LIVE RIGHT because they are the ones whose life reveals a true understanding of them. Rather than being viewed as trash, God’s commands are viewed as precious wisdom for enhancing life now and leading toward the glorious eternity to come. May the genuineness of our love for God and His Will be reflected through our choice to live right before Him. It is in the continuance of a right relationship with God that we can have confidence in receiving the blessings He offers.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A LOVING APPRECIATION FOR GOD’S DISCIPLINE AND DIRECTION!

Trivial Nonsense?
Whenever I see the results of polls taken among “Christians” in the United States, I am amazed at what some say they do or do not believe even though it is clearly addressed in the Scriptures. I have often been caused to wonder whether or not they have ever read the Bible or even understand its significance. Someone has shared that an Arlington, Virginia (USA) minister stated the following: “We have closed our minds to such trivial considerations as the question of the resurrection of Christ. If you fundamentalists wish to believe that nonsense, we have no objections, but we have more important things to preach than the presence or absence of an empty tomb 20 centuries old.” [original source unknown]
Trivial? Nonsense? More important things to preach? Closed minds indeed!
In I Corinthians 15, as Paul reminded these Christians of the Gospel he had preached to them (verse 1) -- the Gospel upon which their salvation was based (verse 2) -- he wrote. . .
“(3) For I delivered to you as OF FIRST IMPORTANCE what I also received: that CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS in accordance with the Scriptures, (4) that HE WAS BURIED, that HE WAS RAISED ON THE THIRD DAY in accordance with the Scriptures, (5) and that HE APPEARED to Cephas, then to the twelve. (6) Then HE APPEARED to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. (7) Then HE APPEARED to James, then to all the apostles. (8) Last of all, as to one untimely born, HE APPEARED also to me.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-8 ESV)
All “in accordance with the Scriptures”, Paul noted that AT THE CORE of the Gospel message was the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. In stark contrast to the previously noted claim that there are “more important things to preach”, Paul placed it all in the context of being “OF FIRST IMPORTANCE”! Paul in no way trivialized the significance of all this. Why should such truth in relation to Jesus not be trivialized? Because Paul went on to state. . .
“(17) And IF CHRIST HAS NOT BEEN RAISED, YOUR FAITH IS FUTILE AND YOU ARE STILL IN YOUR SINS.” (1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV)
Praise God, in Christ we are not left there! Because of Jesus’ resurrection of which many were able to testify since Jesus appeared to them -- some of whom were still living at the time Paul wrote this letter (verse 5) -- we have a hope that extends beyond this life (verse 19) to our own resurrection based on the reality of our Lord’s. (1 Corinthians 15:50-57) Therefore, knowing the great hope we have in Christ that has been secured by His death, burial and resurrection should make it crystal clear the empty tomb is no trivial thing. That emptiness is FULL OF THE HOPE that is ours in Jesus. May we help others come to know its significance for them as well so that they may come to understand it is actually nonsense not to believe!

Family Reflection!
Sometimes members of a family are referred to as “black sheep” in that they don’t necessarily conform to the likeness of the rest of the family with regard to life choices. It is possible for a member of a family to bring either pride or embarrassment to the rest of the family through the manner in which they live. Someone has stated, “Heredity is what makes the father and mother of teenagers wonder a little about each other.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] When it is said that the nut doesn’t fall too far from the tree, what does our life reflect as having been handed down to the next generation? Though we should be mindful of this within our earthly families, should it not be considered even more so with regard to OUR LIFE in the FAMILY OF GOD?
Writing to Timothy at Ephesus, Paul exhorted. . .
“(14) I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, (15) if I delay, you may KNOW HOW ONE OUGHT TO BEHAVE IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:14-15 ESV)
What does OUR LIFE SAY about OUR HEAVENLY FATHER? What kind of family reflection are we exhibiting? Since the church is “a pillar and buttress [support] of the truth”, we ought to be serious about OUR LIFE reflecting that essence of OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. Peter urged those to whom he wrote to conduct their lives in such a manner that ultimately their good deeds would be seen and GOD WOULD BE GLORIFIED! (1 Peter 2:12) May we sincerely consider the relationship we have with THE FATHER and what OUR LIFE says about Him and what He has handed down to us.
Have a great day REFLECTING A GODLY FAMILY RESEMBLANCE!

Wishing Well!
Refreshing! Perhaps that makes us think of pure cold water drawn from a well. However, it is also the impact right actions can have on others. What is it we WISH FOR OTHERS? Does it depend on who they are? Perhaps we have all either heard or used the expression, “I wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy.” Is that our desire in all situations?
Reading of the life of David it doesn’t take long to recognize a considerable amount of self-restraint when it came to vengeance on enemies. Even those who sought his life (i.e. Saul), he was unwilling to strike out against. In Psalm 35 David noted how some had treated him. This treatment was in spite of how he had been toward them. Still, as at other times, the language of the psalm appears to be left in the context of letting God deal with them (Psalm 35:1-3) rather than David taking matters into his own hands.
Note how David had been toward these.
“(11) Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. (12) They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. (13) But I, WHEN THEY WERE SICK -- I WORE SACKCLOTH; I afflicted myself with FASTING; I PRAYED with head bowed on my chest. (14) I went about AS THOUGH I GRIEVED FOR MY FRIEND OR MY BROTHER; AS ONE WHO LAMENTS HIS MOTHER, I bowed down in mourning.” (Psalm 35:11-14 ESV)
David was TOUCHED BY THEIR AFFLICTION rather than rejoicing in view of it. They were in his prayers. He was sincerely struck by their circumstances. The grief David experienced was as if for a friend, brother, or mother. Ultimately such continued action can bring transformation into a close friendship or sense of family.
Solomon warned. . .
“(17) DO NOT REJOICE WHEN YOUR ENEMY FALLS, and LET NOT YOUR HEART BE GLAD when he stumbles, (18) lest the Lord see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him.” (Proverbs 24:17-18 ESV)
May we let such situations be something with which God will deal. It is possible by our continued acts of kindness that A CLOSER BOND MAY DEVELOP between us and such individuals. Our actions may first bewilder, but then refresh others as they are struck by the reality of their own unkindness. Our righteous actions can ultimately provide an all around benefit.
Have a great day LIVING TO DRAW OTHERS CLOSER TOWARD US AND GOD!

Opportunities!
Opportunities arise as we go about the varying day-to-day activities of life. Some of these opportunities are more significant than others and may surface through unimagined circumstances. Perhaps we often focus on the good situations of life as those being the ones to provide good opportunities to SERVE THE PURPOSES OF GOD. However, even during trying times in the lives of others we can find opportunities to direct the focus toward Him. Being brought into contact with people within our community who have lost a loved one to death, I have been able to connect in ways I may not have been able to otherwise. This kind of opportunity may be easy for us to recognize, but how about the opportunities that could arise IN THE MIDST OF OUR OWN STRUGGLES?
Note what appears to have provided Paul’s first connection with those at Galatia.
“(13) You know IT WAS BECAUSE OF A BODILY AILMENT THAT I PREACHED THE GOSPEL TO YOU AT FIRST, (14) and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 4:13-14 ESV)
We don’t know what the physical ailment was of which Paul suffered while there, though it appears to have related to his eyes. (note verse 15) Whatever it was, Paul noted it as having not only been an ailment suffered himself, but that it had been a trial to them as well. The good news related to Paul’s circumstance at the time was in it having provided the OPPORTUNITY TO PREACH THE GOSPEL to them. Though some might allow illness to stop their activity, for Paul he found in it the OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE the message of Christ.
Perhaps the lesson for us is that when we are challenged by that which could seem to restrict our activity, let us begin to look for what opportunities it might create to draw attention to God. This might be done through the faith exhibited in how we accept or work through the situation. It may be a visible sense of peace rather than anger that such would befall us. Or it may be the very opportunity to CONNECT WITH OTHERS we might not have been able to otherwise. In this way we can begin to learn all the more how God can work all things out for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) May God be glorified in all of our life experiences.
Have a great day LEARNING HOW TO BEST USE LIFE SITUATIONS FOR GOD!

From A Distance!
We squint. We shade our eyes. We try to focus hard. Sometimes it is challenging to see clearly those things that are at a distance. However, even when we can’t see every detail clearly, we can sometimes SEE ENOUGH of the image TO KNOW what it is. When that is something we are trying to move toward, even that glimpse is encouraging.
The Hebrew writer referred to some who were looking from afar, but who were still enabled to maintain a proper perspective. After referring to the faith of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob, we read. . .
“These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but HAVING SEEN THEM AND GREETED THEM FROM AFAR, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. (Hebrews 11:13 ESV)
The writer of Hebrews went on to note these as having been seeking a homeland, but recognizing this world was not it. They were even noted as having had opportunity to return from whence they had come, but their focus was toward a “better country” (vs.16); a city being prepared by God. Though it was in the distance, THROUGH THE EYE OF FAITH THEY WERE ABLE TO SEE ENOUGH to encourage their continued reaching toward that which was to come.
Are we doing the same or have we become too comfortable here? It is possible to become so relaxed and at home in this world that we could be setting ourselves up for missing what God has prepared for our future. Though it may not all be clear, the glimpses God has provided through His Word -- coupled with His track record of complete faithfulness -- should help us know we can trust completely in what He is preparing for the glorious eternity to come. May we continually welcome the encouraging glimpses of our coming welcome home!
Have a great day KEEPING THE EYES SET TOWARD THE CITY ABOVE!

A Revolutionary Act!
Yesterday my wife and I ate lunch at a small local restaurant which had bumper stickers and other notices covering a wall. As we ate we enjoyed sharing with each other ones that were catching our attention. Among them was one stating, “In A Time Of Universal Deceit, Telling The Truth Is A Revolutionary Act.”
Truth! HONESTY! A revolutionary act? I have had opportunity to witness when honesty actually seemed to take people by surprise. In some circles of society HONESTY doesn’t even seem to be expected. It is a very sad commentary on any society when telling the truth actually catches the attention as if it were something unusual.
Note a sad statement regarding God’s people during the days of Jeremiah.
“(4) Let everyone beware of his neighbor, and put no trust in any brother, for EVERY BROTHER IS A DECEIVER, and every neighbor goes about as a slanderer. (5) EVERYONE DECEIVES HIS NEIGHBOR, and NO ONE SPEAKS THE TRUTH; THEY HAVE TAUGHT THEIR TONGUE TO SPEAK LIES; they weary themselves committing iniquity. (6) Heaping oppression upon oppression, and DECEIT UPON DECEIT, they refuse to know me, declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 9:4-6 ESV)
Deceivers! No one speaking the truth! Described as having taught the tongue to lie! All of this was capped off by a reference noting the refusal to know God. How could they really know the God of truth when involved in so much deception?
In writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul noted a transition and urged. . .
“Therefore, HAVING PUT AWAY FALSEHOOD, let each one of you SPEAK THE TRUTH WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members one of another.” (Ephesians 4:25 ESV)
Lack of HONESTY destroys relationships. How can one know what to expect when deception has been the norm? Recognizing the importance of our relationship with God and with one another ought to encourage us toward HONESTY in all things. Once that reputation is lost it is often difficult for the trust to be regained.
Words of wisdom shared by Solomon note the approach we ought to wisely take.
“(6) Hear, for I will speak noble things, and FROM MY LIPS WILL COME WHAT IS RIGHT, (7) for MY MOUTH WILL UTTER TRUTH; WICKEDNESS IS AN ABOMINATION TO MY LIPS.” (Proverbs 8:6-7 ESV)
Let us not minimize either the importance of HONESTY in all things nor the impact it can have on those around us. May others come to know HONESTY is what they can always expect from us. In this way we will reflect the essence of God and be the people others will know our word can always be depended upon.

The Divine Link!
It has been said, “You are what you eat.” It has also been said, “You are what you read.” Both expressions imply people tend to become the result of what they take into their life either bodily or intellectually. Perhaps we would agree it’s not possible to become any more than that to which we have linked our life. If this is so, we ought to give that link and its influence serious consideration.
As Paul began his letter to the church at Galatia he stated. . .
“(1) Paul, an apostle -- NOT FROM MEN NOR THROUGH MAN, BUT THROUGH JESUS CHRIST AND GOD THE FATHER, who raised him from the dead.” (Galatians 1:1 ESV)
Then dropping down to verse eleven we read. . .
“(11) For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is NOT MAN’S GOSPEL. (12) For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I RECEIVED IT THROUGH A REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST.” (Galatians 1:11-12 ESV)
Paul’s apostleship was not something he assumed for himself, nor was it due to an appointment by men, but rather came “through Jesus Christ and God the Father.” Also his message was not of human origin, but came directly from the Lord. It was through a Divine connection Paul had become what he was, having been transformed from a persecutor of the faith to a proclaimer of it. (Galatians 1:23) This Divine link to his life and work influenced him to acknowledge how intertwined his existence had become with Christ. (Galatians 2:20) Nothing Paul did was merely for himself, but was instead for the benefit of others and to the glory of God. Neither his life nor his message were his own, but were Christ’s and that link empowered Paul to honor Christ whether it be through facing life or death. (Philippians 1:20)
In Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth he acknowledged it was BY THE GRACE OF GOD that he was what he was. (1 Corinthians 15:10) As Christians, is this not also true for us? Is our life not also so Divinely linked? This being true, may we, like Paul, humbly seek to honor the Lord regardless of what we face in life as we continue to hold out His message of hope for eternal life. In this way our life will reflect we too have not received “the GRACE OF GOD in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:10 and 2 Corinthians 6:1)
Have a great day MAINTAINING THE LINK THAT MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR LIFE NOW AND FOR ETERNITY!

Viewing The Scales!
A little girl, taking a playmate on a tour of her home, came to the bathroom where she pointed out the bathroom scales. “I’m not really sure what it is,” the little girl began to explain. “All I know is that you stand on it and it makes you angry.”
Now, I have also seen people step on the scales and smile with elation. It appears to depend on how one feels ABOUT THE TRUTH THE SCALES REVEAL.
This brings to mind the way some people approach THE TRUTH OF SCRIPTURE. For some there is anger because of things they either do not want to accept or just don’t want to change in their lives. For others there is rejoicing over being able to see what needs to change and the encouragement of God’s promises that make conforming to His way worth while. God did not give us His instructions to keep us from enjoying life, but rather to help us find -- through proper living -- the truest joy possible in life. His Word has our highest good always in mind!
This is why Paul wrote:
“(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for TEACHING, for REPROOF, for CORRECTION, and for TRAINING IN RIGHTEOUSNESS, (17) that the man of God may BE COMPETENT, EQUIPPED for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
Is our view of God’s word analogous to our view of standing on the bathroom scales and looking at what they reveal? May we REJOICE IN THE TRUTH OF GOD’S WORD, for therein we glimpse His loving wisdom that leads us in His Way and ultimately to His eternal presence.
Have a great day STANDING ON HIS WORD!

Brought Up By God!
Reading through Psalms I was recently struck by an interesting combination of words regarding God and the benefit enjoyed by David. We read. . .
“You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and YOUR GENTLENESS MADE ME GREAT.” (Psalm 18:35 ESV)
Generally we might think of greatness coming by means of power. However, here David attributed his greatness to having come by the GENTLENESS OF GOD. I don’t recall having come across such a reference elsewhere in the Scriptures, though it is part of our Lord’s invitation to come to Him. (Matthew 11:29)
Human life has been described as being like a flower that can only survive if fenced around and shielded from the harsh elements. It is a GENTLE hand that carefully works to cultivate the soil around the plant, removing the weeds, and carefully providing needed water without washing it away. God works similarly in our life to encourage and nurture our growth. It is His skillful word and work that prunes our life (note John 15:1-2) to make it more fruitful and exalts it to become what He desires it to be. The GENTLENESS OF GOD is experienced in His wonderful grace and mercy that are ours in Christ. God is forgiving as He desires all to be drawn toward Him in repentance that they may be saved. (2 Peter 3:9) Yes, God can be a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29), but He does not have to be that way toward us.
This GENTLENESS OF GOD was exemplified in Christ where we read. . .
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that THOUGH HE WAS RICH, yet FOR YOUR SAKE HE BECAME POOR, so THAT YOU by his poverty MIGHT BECOME RICH.” (2 Corinthians 8:9 ESV)
Jesus humbly took on flesh (Philippians 2:7) as He came to earth in order to LIFT US back up to God. In GENTLENESS Jesus tried to connect with the hearts of those who heard His teaching and observed His healing. It is that same GENTLENESS that desires not to force, but rather to lovingly draw mankind toward God and an acceptance of His Will.
Today there are those who glory in referring to themselves as a “self-made man.” As David considered his greatness, he acknowledged himself as having become a “God-made man.” GOD’S GENTLENESS had made David great! May we continue to humble ourselves before God that we also may be exalted (James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6) by His powerful, but GENTLE loving hand.

Remembering Our place!
We live in a society that to a great extent has forgotten God. Not even all who verbally acknowledge Him live as if they do. Then there are those who continue their attempt to push the mention of God out of every corner of life they can. Many seem to think they have become wise enough in and of themselves to direct and govern life. However, while pushing God aside, societies’ challenges continue to grow. Reliance merely on the wisdom of mankind is not making life better.
As in all other eras of the history of mankind there continues to be the need for the same reminder. David mentioned it when he wrote. . .
“(19) Arise, O LORD! LET NOT MAN PREVAIL; let the nations be judged before you! (20) Put them in fear, O LORD! LET THE NATIONS KNOW THAT THEY ARE BUT MEN!” (Psalm 9:19-20 ESV)
Solomon wisely declared that it is the Lord’s -- not man’s -- purpose that will prevail or stand. (Proverbs 19:21) That is why it is His Purpose and Will we should seek to adopt for our life. Like all others, we must remember we are but men or women or boys or girls. We need direction and wisdom beyond ourselves and God continues to extend it for our blessed taking.
Our place in this realm is for our life to reflect to those around us the difference allowing God to have His rightful place in our life has made and continues to make. It is only under His guidance that we can become so much more than this world can make us. Remaining under God’s direction we can be the godly influence this world so much needs.
Have a great day LIVING TO PLACE THE WORLD’S FOCUS BACK ON GOD!

To Know Him By Name!
When we know someone “by name” it usually reflects our personal familiarity with that person. We are able to speak of them very specifically. It may also mean we know what to expect of them.
David wrote. . .
“(9) The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (10) And THOSE WHO KNOW YOUR NAME PUT THEIR TRUST IN YOU, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:9-10 ESV)
Some might ask, “What’s in a name?”. Perhaps it would be worthy for us to consider what our own name has become synonymous with in the minds of those who know us. Can we be trusted? Can others depend on us? For others to know our name, what does that mean? What did the psalmist mean with regard to God?
When we consider the English word for God, it seems to fall short of the power behind the Hebrew names for Him. Each one of the Hebrew references for God noted a particular quality relating to His Being! Though the Hebrew language bore a long list, let us note a few. “Elohim” is what is generally translated “God” and refers to the aspect of God as “Creator” and is in the plural, thus pointing to the inclusion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as Deity. “YHWH” (Yahweh or Jehovah) is usually given as “LORD” (as in our text above) and points to the aspect of a “Covenant God”. “Adonai (or Athonai) is often translated “Lord” and points to God as “Ruler”. “El-Shaddai” is “God Almighty”. “El-Olam” is “God the everlasting One” or “God of Eternity”. “Elyon” points to the aspect of God as the “Exalted One” or “Most High”. And the list goes on.
It seems obvious that one name alone is incapable of capturing the greatness of the essence of God. However, to KNOW GOD by any one of these designations ought to encourage our trust in Him. As in the text above, to know God as the “Covenant God” means we can trust what He has promised relating to our relationship with Him. May we strive for our faithfulness to be drawn to His as we come to know He can be nothing but faithful. (2 Timothy 2:13) This is true regarding both His promises and His warnings. God will be true, not forsaking those who seek Him. May we continue to be a seeker of Him and His Sovereign Will!
Have a great day KNOWING BY NAME THE ONE WHO IS EVER FAITHFUL!

A Spirit Of Persuasion!
In Paul’s Apostleship, he had the right to be very bold with the authority he had received from Christ. Though, like Paul, we should always boldly stand for the truth, his desire seems to have been one of not wanting to have to be harsh with others. However, if that is what was called for in his ministry, he was willing to be so bold. Though boldness has persuasive power, it seems Paul’s preference was to exercise persuasion of another sort.
Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul stated. . .
“(1) I, Paul, myself ENTREAT YOU, BY THE MEEKNESS AND GENTLENESS OF CHRIST -- I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away! -- (2) I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.” (2 Corinthians 10:1-2 ESV)
Apparently some felt that what Paul was in writing was not what he really was when face to face. Now, if the Corinthians followed Paul’s reasoning, they should have seen that to consider Paul a weakling in his response would be to consider Jesus in that light as well. Paul was striving to approach his Corinthian brethren in a Christ-like (i.e. Matthew 11:29-30) manner; in a spirit of MEEKNESS AND GENTLENESS. However, even Jesus exercised bold actions and swift rebukes when the occasions merited them. What Paul was choosing to do here in his own defense -- when he had obviously been spoken against (vs.2) -- was to be like Christ by not reviling in return. (1 Peter 2:23) The exercise of such MEEKNESS AND GENTLENESS is actually a sign of great strength in controlling one’s reaction to the situation. In a sense, Paul was allowing his spirit to speak for itself with the hope it would be appropriately responded to by his brethren at Corinth. Perhaps here they should have seen how Paul was exemplifying the love he had described in his first letter -- especially the characteristics of patience, kindness, and forbearance. (1 Corinthians 13:4 & 7)
May we also recognize the great power of a spirit of MEEKNESS AND GENTLENESS in our dealings with others. Being “forbearing” instead of “overbearing” can sometimes have greater power in influencing others toward good. Let us, like Paul, strive to exercise the “MEEKNESS AND GENTLENESS of Christ” as we encourage others toward right living.
Have a great day EXERCISING A CHRIST-LIKE SPIRIT IN OUR INTERACTION WITH OTHERS!

"Thank God!"
“THANK GOD!” Perhaps we hear people use this expression of whom we might wonder whether they actually believe in Him or not. However, there are possibly more situations in life than we might realize where “THANK GOD!” is the most appropriate response! As Paul encouraged the Christians at Corinth to follow through with the giving they had purposed to do (2 Corinthians 8:10-11) for helping meet the needs of saints in Judea, he stated the following:
“(12) For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is ALSO OVERFLOWING IN MANY THANKSGIVINGS TO GOD. (13) By their approval of this service, THEY WILL GLORIFY GOD because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, (14) while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.” (2 Corinthians 9:12-14 ESV)
To receive the thanks of others for help we have offered encourages us in our giving. To be honest about it, don’t we generally feel better about our giving when we know it is appreciated? However we really should be willing to give simply because of the opportunity coupled with our ability to meet the need. Still, to know we have helped others and they are drawn to “THANK GOD” should make us feel even better. In such situations we are in some way being viewed as the hand of God (or the gracious link between God and the recipient of the help) in fulfilling the need.
When our actions draw the ATTENTION TO GOD and bring glory to Him, can there be any higher motivation for service? Is that not exactly where Jesus stated our works were to draw the attention? (Matthew 5:16) When our acts of kindness and any form of service we offer to others is responded to with a “THANK GOD!”, may we hope that our genuine relationship to God is truly being seen in our actions.
Have a great day BEING A PERSON FOR WHOM OTHERS CAN THANK GOD!

Stretched!
There are inventions developed and advancements made because of those who may have begun by stretching their imagination. Though the truth should not be stretched, EXPANDING THE MIND through a willingness to learn new things can add not only to one’s personal life, but to those around them. Oliver Wendell Holmes is quoted as saying, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” When one gains new information, the thinking (if one is honest) can never be the same again, and this will ultimately become true regarding the life itself. Though one may have to sometimes admit they had been wrong about some things in the past, they can rejoice that they now know more fully.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he encouraged. .
Paul’s unceasing prayer for these Christians was that they would be filled with a knowledge and understanding of the Will of God. From such growth should come a conviction to live in a manner that would keep one from going back to the original way of living. Increasing in the knowledge of God should steadily move us toward even greater works and the living of a life marked by a greater degree of godliness. Expanding the mind with a proper understanding of God’s Will ought to serve to expand our life in ways that allow God to put us to greater use for His purposes. May we recognize it is a good thing to not be able to go back to the shape we once were as God’s spiritual EXPANSION envelops our life.

Influence!
It is interesting to observe what others do when instructions are given, especially when those instructions are provided both audibly and visibly. When what is heard does not match up with what is said, what is most likely to be followed? I have seen (and even been caught up in) when someone commanded a group to raise their right hand, but at the same time raised their own left hand, that something amazing occurs. What happens with most people is they will generally follow the visual command rather than the verbal. This is what makes the old game of “Simon Says” so comical and tricky; people most often find themselves doing what the leader does rather than following the verbal commands. What this seems to illustrate is how we may be more easily influenced by WHAT IS SEEN than by what is heard. Someone has even pointed out that “The nerves leading to the eye are much larger than those leading to the ear. Science tells us that we give twenty-five times as much attention to what we see as to what we hear.” [original source unknown]
Can we understand the implications of this with regard to the manner in which we live? Even though we may speak the truth of God to others, the way we conduct our life is what may most attract the attention. WHAT WE DO seems to speak much louder than what we say.
James exhorted. . .
“(25) But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, BEING NO HEARER WHO FORGETS BUT A DOER WHO ACTS, he WILL BE BLESSED IN his DOING.” (James 1:25 ESV)
By living properly, not only do we receive a blessing, but those around us potentially stand to be blessed as well. Paul noted in his Roman letter that when there is inconsistency in a life with this regard, it is a cause of the name of God being spoken against. (Romans 2:21-24) Therefore, if we are going to be the influential salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) this world needs, we ought to give serious consideration to the consistency between the truth we speak and how it is practiced in daily living. May God’s powerful truths be lived out loud so that those around us will be able TO SEE His Wisdom with flesh on it.

A Covenant!
To make a covenant means to solemnly (sincerely) agree to something that becomes binding on all parties involved. It is a drawing together in agreement to terms that will be followed. It is a commitment to be acknowledged and honored in a manner that encourages an expectation of the trust being upheld. Covenants should not be entered into lightly. When our spiritual life and proper relationship to God are involved, we should be willing to do whatever it takes to sustain our integrity before God and mankind. This was the manner in which Job appears to have approached his life. Recognizing all his ways were in view of God (Job 31:4), Job acknowledged a fear of God (Job 31:23) if his conduct was not in accordance with God’s Will. Therefore Job’s focus in living was toward dealing with others and conducting his own life in a manner that would be pleasing to God.
In view of Job’s serious approach to living in the presence of God, note a covenant he made.
“I HAVE MADE A COVENANT WITH MY EYES; how then could I gaze at a virgin?” (Job 31:1 ESV)
On what do we allow OUR EYES to rest? Though there are things we may not be able to keep from seeing, let us be mindful of what we choose to take a second look at or continue to focus on. Would we, like Job, not also do well to make a solemn covenant with OUR EYES so that we are not drawn toward or into that which is not appropriate according to godly living?
Writing to the church at Rome, Paul exhorted. . .
“(11) So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. (13) DO NOT PRESENT YOUR MEMBERS TO SIN AS INSTRUMENTS FOR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.” (Romans 6:11-13 ESV)
To what are we presenting the member of our body called THE EYE? This is the member of our body Jesus referred to as the “lamp of the body.” (Matthew 6:22) The healthy eye fills the body with light, while the unhealthy eye fills the life with darkness. (Matthew 6:22-23) Therefore we should be very concerned what it is we are drawing in through OUR EYES. Remember the sin in the garden began with a look. (Genesis 3:6) The images we draw in through THE EYES last much longer than the existence of those things before us. As we strive to live with integrity before God, may our covenant with Him include the focus of OUR EYES.

A Joyful Freedom!
Some seem to go crazy with freedom, not recognizing that freedom is not without limits or that one must consider how their freedom intersects (or overlaps) with the freedom of others. As freedom is exercised, we can REJOICE IN THE PRIVILEGE, but we must still exercise that freedom in responsible ways.
Paul exhorted those at Galatia. . .
“(13) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only DO NOT USE YOUR FREEDOM AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FLESH, but through love SERVE ONE ANOTHER. (14) For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14 ESV)
And Peter urged. . .
“(16) Live as people who are free, NOT USING YOUR FREEDOM AS A COVER-UP FOR EVIL, but LIVING AS SERVANTS OF GOD.” (1 Peter 2:16 ESV)
Some view freedom as license to do whatever they want. However, we must never forget that with freedom also comes responsibility. Also, since our Christian freedom was secured by the selfless work or our Lord, why should we consider living selfishly in it? Though both Paul and Peter referred to the blessing of freedom enjoyed by Christians and cautioned against the abuse of that freedom, they also pointed toward living as BONDSERVANTS. According to Paul this is to be our selfless view toward others and Peter noted this as our view toward God. We are always FREE TO SERVE one another as we acknowledge our role as SERVANTS of God. This is a great and powerful freedom that can impact others far more than we might realize.
CHOOSING TO SERVE always makes us feel better than being forced to do so. Let us therefore REJOICE IN THE PRIVILEGE that is ours when we have the means and the opportunity TO SERVE and make life better for those around us. In this way we are SERVING as the hands and feet of the Lord in touching the lives of humanity. Living a life of practical service is something Jesus placed great emphasis on in view of God’s judgment regarding our manner of living. (note Matthew 25:31-46) May our freedom as BONDSERVANTS of God bring us the joy in recognizing our usefulness in God’s scheme of things, knowing how much we have been freely given as we freely give in SERVICE to others.
Have a great day FINDING THE JOY OF UNSELFISH FREEDOM!

Declaration Of Freedom!
We should appreciate the freedoms we have. However, with freedom there is the need to remember who has provide it and at what cost, as well as recognizing the responsibility that goes along with that freedom. This is true when we think about the freedoms enjoyed in this country. It is also true relative to living as citizens of God’s kingdom (Philippians 3:20) which is even more worthy of our continuing focus.
As Jesus began His public ministry, while in the synagogue in Nazareth, He was given the opportunity to read. Being given the scroll of the prophet Isaiah, Jesus unrolled it and read where it is written. . .
“(18) ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has SENT ME TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES and recovering of sight to the blind, to SET AT LIBERTY THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, (19) to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’” (Luke 4:18-19 ESV)
After rolling up the scroll and sitting down, Jesus declared, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21 ESV) Though it may have been freedom from the yoke of the Roman empire some might have been looking for in association with the promised Messiah, Jesus came to proclaim and provide the freedom needed by all humanity; freedom from the captivity and oppression of sin. Just as it was during the days of Jesus’ walk on earth, there are still those who do not realize how much they are in need of being set free. (John 8:33) There is a lack of acknowledgement of how enslaved they truly are. (John 8:34)
The words Jesus spoke then, still need to be accepted today.
“(31) So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, and THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.’” (John 8:31-32 ESV)
Part of THE TRUTH to be acknowledged is that there is sin to be dealt with in our life. (1 John 1:10) Accepting this reality we are able to praise God for THE TRUTH that Jesus and the power of His blood are the adequate means of cleansing us from that sin. (1 John 1:7) The burden has been lifted! The oppression has been resolved. Freedom has been secured! Therefore Paul could encourage the church at Rome in writing. . .
“(1) There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life has SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.” (Romans 8:1-2 ESV)
Praise God that if the Son sets us free, we are free indeed! (John 8:36) It is the greatest freedom we can enjoy because of the peace we can have before God and the hope that carries us on into a glorious eternity with Christ. May our life genuinely reflect an appreciation for the freedom our Lord gave His life to secure for us while we declare the offer of that hope to others.

Untampered With!
Tampering with food and medications is a serious offense. Such crimes are vigorously investigated with perpetrators brought to justice because when food and medications are tampered with, serious health risks and even death can result. The United States Federal Drug and Food Administration (FDA) is charged with overseeing the safety of what is being passed on to the consumer and companies take the precaution of sealing their products in such a manner that hopefully we can tell whether they have already been opened up or not. Therefore, when purchases are made we generally trust that what we are buying has not been tampered with and is therefore safe for our use.
Paul, writing to the church at Corinth stated. . .
“(1) Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. (2) But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. WE REFUSE to practice cunning or TO TAMPER WITH GOD’S WORD, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:1-2 ESV)
God’s Word is to be left as it is. Throughout the Scriptures God has made this expectation clear regardless of era. (i.e. Deut. 4:2; Prov. 30:6; 1 Cor. 4:6; Rev. 22:18-19) What comes from Him can only have its full affect when taken as it is. We are not to repackage it. We are not to either dilute it or enhance it. After all, how can we improve on the perfect wisdom of His Word? To tamper with God’s Word is a serious offense because the SPIRITUAL HEALTH AND ETERNAL LIFE OF SOULS ARE AT STAKE. For that which truly nourishes the soul and remedies the ails of life, may we accept God’s Word in its sealed and un-tampered form.

I Agree!
There can be a sense of PEACE when we are in agreement with others. Disagreements create stress and unrest not only for those specifically involved, but also for those who may witness the conflict. However, when one is in agreement with righteousness, there can still be a sense of PEACE even though some may oppose the stand.
Job’s friends disagreed with him on many fronts. They continued to point toward great sinfulness in his life as being the cause of his suffering. However, Job continued to hold on to his integrity before God. Though Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar continued to make assumptions that were not quite accurate, there were still some statements made that were correct. Note an example from the discourse of Eliphaz where we read. . .
“(21) AGREE WITH GOD, AND BE AT PEACE; thereby good will come to you. (22) Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.” (Job 22:21-22 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads. . . “(21) Stop quarreling with God! IF YOU AGREE WITH HIM, YOU WILL HAVE PEACE AT LAST, and things will go well for you.” [NLT, © 1997]
Living life in agreement with mankind may mean the compromising or shifting of values. However, to be in agreement with God should leave us very much AT PEACE since all His ways are right and there is nothing false in Him. We can be AT PEACE because in agreeing with God we know we can’t go wrong. One commentator points to the literal meaning of agreement here as becoming a companion of God. This would be to be on His side. Can there be any source of PEACE greater than knowing we are standing right with God? May that always be our aim.

Recognizing The Danger!
There are many ways in which we can fall SHORT of what God wants us to be. Paul noted that falling SHORT is something we all have in common. (Romans 3:23) As Christians we can praise God for the justification we have received by His grace through the redemption that is ours in Christ. (Romans 3:24) Without that gift we would be left where we have fallen.
Sometimes it only takes falling A LITTLE SHORT to bring danger and disastrous consequences to life. For a floatation ring to fall SHORT of a victim out on the open ocean could result in drowning. For a jump across a crevasse to fall SHORT of the other side could mean plunging to one’s death. Another life situation to seriously consider is how -- as someone has expressed -- “ANGER is just ONE LETTER SHORT of DANGER!”
Paul put it this way:
“(26) Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (27) and GIVE NO OPPORTUNITY TO THE DEVIL.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)
Anger can be an indicator we recognize an injustice being done or some other action that is not right and in such cases can motivate us toward action that might rectify the situation. However, we must control and keep the anger in check rather than allowing it to control us. The anger must not be allowed to simmer or -- like a spark in dry grass -- it can flare up and do considerable damage not only to others, but to our own selves as well. This provides the devil a grand “opportunity” (Gk., “topos”, literally “a place”) in our life to use us -- and whatever situation it may be that has aroused the anger -- to his own un-God-glorifying purposes. Perhaps we can see the “D” of “danger” as the “devil” attaching himself to the anger”. Allowing the devil to gain some ground is the great danger we need to avert.
When we fall SHORT in this way, it is as if we are surrendering ground in our life to the devil. May our life instead be surrendered more fully to God so that when anger is experienced, we can learn to trust Him to take care of what we cannot change. God is far better at handling righteous indignation than we are anyway.
Have a great day LETTING GOD KEEP HIS GROUND IN OUR LIFE!
