"Easy Come . . . !'
Have you ever heard the following expression? “EASY COME! EASY GO!”
I wonder if that is what Solomon had in mind when he wrote. . .
“(4) Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. (5) When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it SPROUTS WINGS, FLYING LIKE AN EAGLE TOWARD HEAVEN.” (Proverbs 23:4-5 ESV)
That is so true about a lot of things in life -- especially money. Sometimes it is hard to save because there are so many things we either want or need. It is good to learn budgeting skills sooner rather than later. However, this also should help us think about what things REALLY HAVE VALUE and what things are TRULY WORTH holding on to. There are some things we need to realize are not worth chasing after, thus the need to exercise wisdom when setting goals.
After Jesus had fed the five thousand with the loaves and fishes, there were people who came to Him again apparently because he had given them food before. Therefore Jesus -- being fully aware of what goes on within the mind of individuals -- attempted to lift the focus toward the pursuit of that which lasts or endures.
Note Jesus’ words.
“(26) Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. (27) Do not labor for the food that perishes, BUT FOR THE FOOD THAT ENDURES TO ETERNAL LIFE, WHICH THE SON OF MAN WILL GIVE TO YOU. For on him God the Father has set his seal.’ (28) Then they said to him, ‘What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’ (29) Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you BELIEVE IN HIM WHOM HE HAS SENT.’” John 6:26-29 ESV)
Jesus then went on to point to Himself as the “BREAD OF LIFE.” (John 6:35) We need to eat, but there are needs greater than those that relate merely to physical life. What marks the main focus of our life pursuit? May Jesus be our pursuit for the eternal nourishment of our souls. With Him it will not be “easy come, easy go” because Jesus and our life with Him is FOREVER! Though worldly wealth may sprout wings and fly away in this realm, through our relationship with Christ we can look forward to the day we will FLY AWAY WITH HIM!
Have a great day PURSUING THAT WHICH IS OF TRUE LASTING VALUE!

What Time Is It?
Two frequently asked questions: “What time is it?” “What day is it?”
Do you ever lose track of time? Have you ever forgotten what day it was? Sometimes that may not really matter -- for example if you get up Saturday morning and begin dressing for school and then realize you could have slept in. However, at other times it can be a very bad mistake. To lose track of time and miss your curfew could put you in big trouble, perhaps ending up being grounded for a while. To forget what time it is and end up late for school could cause you to end up spending time in detention. If you forgot a special friend’s birthday you might feel bad as they wondered how you could have forgotten them. If you forgot it was the day for that big history test and hadn’t studied, you know the fear you would have of bombing on that one. And the list could go on.
In writing to the church at Corinth, Paul mentioned an IMPORTANT TIME AND DAY that merits serious consideration for all of us. We read. . .
“(1) Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. (2) For he says, ‘In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, NOW IS THE FAVORABLE TIME; behold, NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION.” (2 Corinthians 6:1-2 ESV)
Don’t put off to tomorrow what you know should be focused on TODAY. God has given us opportunity TODAY to respond to the salvation He has made possible. The TIME is NOW to either make or renew the decision to follow Jesus daily. You may live 20, 30, 50, 80, or more years -- but that is not a guarantee. You can only be sure of the day and time you have RIGHT NOW! How are you focusing on it? Blessings of tomorrow and eternity are hinged on decisions you are making today. God has been so loving and gracious to provide the time to acknowledge and accept the salvation He has made possible. Thank God for the opportunity TODAY provides!
Have a great day MAKING DAILY CHOICES WITH ETERNITY IN VIEW!

Everybody Needs It!
“Let’s go get a coke.” “Let’s grab a burger.” “Let’s go get some pizza.” Are those suggestions always linked to hunger or are they more reflective of the desire to do something together? When someone says, “Let me buy you lunch.” is that not most often an indication they would like to discuss something while the meal is taking place? Perhaps the food is merely an excuse for getting the opportunity to talk.
Everybody needs food, but everybody also needs some companionship that provides a positive impact on the life. What a blessing to make connections where that relationship allows conversation to get to a significant level. Reading through the Gospels we find Jesus at the table with others on a number of occasions. Jesus had the ability to take a simple meal and turn it into an opportunity for needed lessons. Though these were times for the body to receive nourishment, Jesus took the opportunity to provide FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
On an occasion when Jesus was invited into the home of a Pharisee whose name was Simon, the meal’s focus was interrupted by a woman who heard Jesus was there. She slipped in and began washing Jesus’ feet with her tears, wiping them with her hair, and then anointing them with ointment from an alabaster flask. This caused Simon to wonder about Jesus because if He were in fact a prophet, He would have known this was a sinful woman touching Him. (Luke 7:36-39) Jesus -- knowing what was going on in Simon’s mind -- took the opportunity to give Him some FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
We read. . .
“And Jesus answering said to him, ‘Simon, I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU.’ And he answered, ‘Say it, Teacher.’” (Luke 7:40 ESV)
Jesus went on to tell the parable of two debtors. (Luke 7:41-42) The intent of this parable was to cause Simon to think a little deeper about the love that reveals an appreciation for forgiveness.
On another occasion Jesus offered some encouragement that began with a shared breakfast. (John 21:9-12) This was with another Simon; Simon Peter. On this occasion Jesus drew Peter’s attention to their relationship while reaffirming He had a work for Peter to do. (John 21:15-19) Here was a simple fish breakfast used to powerfully connect with Peter who may have still struggled with having denied his Lord three times. (John 18:15-18, 25-27)
Being drawn together to share food for the body is also a good time for sharing FOOD FOR THOUGHT. A variety of discussions may take place over food, some of more significance than others. Since we often share meals with others significant to us, perhaps those are times to share thoughts of the greatest significance; spiritual matters of importance to life and eternity. The opportunity provided by a simple meal can become a powerful launching pad for changes in the lives of others. Just some FOOD FOR THOUGHT as we try to walk in the steps of Jesus.
Have a great day ACCEPTING OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCUSS WHAT MATTERS!

In Agreement!
When teens desire to be involved in some activities, they may go to their parents with the hope of gaining their CONSENT to go. To have the CONSENT of another (whether that be from parents, teachers, peers, or others) is to have their blessing (or permission) because they are in agreement with the activity. When we CONSENT to do something we ourselves are expressing our agreement that it is okay to do.
In the first chapter of Proverbs, Solomon exhorted. . .
“My son, if sinners entice you, DO NOT CONSENT.” (Proverbs 1:10 ESV)
A few verses further Solomon urged to refrain from walking in the way with them and to hold back the foot from their paths. (Proverbs 1:15)
Whatever invitations we give in to need to be given serious consideration. There are things some people will do when encouraged by others that they would never consider doing alone. Don’t give in or CONSENT to that which is not in agreement with the path of truth and righteousness.
In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth he asked. . .
“(14) Do NOT BE UNEQUALLY YOKED with unbelievers. For WHAT PARTNERSHIP has righteousness with lawlessness? Or WHAT FELLOWSHIP has light with darkness? (15) WHAT ACCORD has Christ with Belial? Or WHAT PORTION does a believer share with an unbeliever?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-15 ESV)
Though some have limited this “unequally yoked” principle to marriage, Paul’s context covers a much broader spectrum of life. Giving serious consideration to who one marries and the impact and influence it can have on life’s direction is of great significance, but this is also true with regard to who it is we join in agreement with for other activities of life. It is important to understand the influence others can have on us when we throw our CONSENT into the ring with theirs.
The questions Paul posed above were not necessarily in need of being answered. These contrasting couplets listed should naturally draw the attention to the reality certain things just do not mix with the worship of God and the Christian walk. Some things just cannot be matched together no matter how one tries. Who we closely bond with and the activities that go along with that “partnership” or “fellowship” is worth serious consideration. Do we really agree with what we are being encouraged to do? If those things are not in agreement with truth and righteousness then let us not CONSENT to being involved. A few moments of ridicule by those who would urge us to join them is a small price to pay compared to the cost of CONSENTING to walk down the wrong path. Also, our not CONSENTING could encourage another to refrain as well. May we continue on the righteous path of God’s Will. We can be assured of where it leads.
Have a great day ACCEPTING THE YOKE OF CHRIST! (Matthew 11:28-30)

God's Awareness! (part 2 of 2)
Living under the “EYES OF THE LORD” ought to be a sobering thought (Hebrews 4:13), but it should also be a source of great encouragement to us. As we noted yesterday, Israel was made aware that the “EYES OF THE LORD” would always be upon the land of which He was giving them. (Deuteronomy 11:12) After Solomon built the temple he was encouraged that this place where God had placed His Name was where HIS EYES AND HEART would be! (1 Kings 9:3) What wonderful encouragement to draw the nation of Israel toward a continued faithful relationship with Him. Was such a blessing only for Israel? Does God hold out such a blessing for us as well?
Jesus cautioned and then encouraged. . .
“(4) I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. (5) But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! (6) Are not FIVE SPARROWS SOLD FOR TWO PENNIES? AND NOT ONE OF THEM IS FORGOTTEN BEFORE GOD. (7) Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. FEAR NOT; YOU ARE OF MORE VALUE THAN MANY SPARROWS.” (Luke 12:4-7 ESV) [also Matthew 10:28-31]
The One Who has power over our eternal destiny is to have our reverential fear! However, let us also be encouraged by His mindfulness. He Who is aware of what we might think an insignificant sparrow, is fully aware of us whom He considers of more value than many sparrows.
Consider the encouraging refrain of the hymn “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” [words by Civilla D. Martin (1905) and music by Charles H. Gabriel]: “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow, And I know He watches me.” Let us be encouraged by the “EYES OF THE LORD”, realizing everything going on in our life is of great significance to Him. May we rejoice living under His LOVING AND WATCHFUL EYES and respond appreciatively in all areas of our life!
Have a great day KNOWING OUR WORTH IN THE EYES OF GOD!

God's Awareness! (part 1 of 2)
When the nation of Israel was being encouraged with regard to the land God was leading them toward and of which He was going to give them, there was a two-fold manner in which Israel was to be conscious of God’s awareness. There was the need “to fear the LORD your God” and walk in His ways. (Deuteronomy 10:12) God would be fully aware of whether there was faithfulness to Him or not. The discipline of the Lord was to be remembered as a sign of His greatness. (Deuteronomy 11:2) Life lived under the watchful eye of God was something to be seriously considered. He was to be reverenced and His Will was to be obeyed.
The other side of being mindful of God’s awareness was to be a great source of encouragement that God’s help was available as all the experiences of life -- whether challenging or peaceful -- were within His full view. Therefore Israel was encouraged. . .
“(11) But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, (12) a land that the LORD your God cares for. THE EYES OF THE LORD YOUR GOD ARE ALWAYS UPON IT, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.” (Deuteronomy 11:11-12 ESV)
As the nation of Israel continued to rightfully acknowledge their relationship with God and the life blessings He continued to provide, it was to be an encouraging thought to know the “EYES OF THE LORD” would always be upon the land in which they lived. God would continue to be fully aware of what the nation needed and they would be richly blessed in that land under GOD’S WATCHFUL EYE.
During the days of Solomon, after he had prayed a lengthy prayer following the dedication of the temple built for God, the Lord appeared to him with encouragement regarding His continued awareness of what would take place there, provided the nation continued in faithfulness to Him. (note warning of 1 Kings 9:6-9)
God expressed His encouragement as follows:
“(3) And the LORD said to him, ‘I have heard your prayer and your plea, which you have made before me. I have consecrated this house that you have built, by putting my name there forever. MY EYES AND MY HEART WILL BE THERE FOR ALL TIME.” (1 Kings 9:3 ESV)
The place where God had placed His Name and where God would be met as worship was offered up to Him, was where HIS EYES AND HEART would be! What an encouragement to know that not only GOD’S WATCHFUL EYE, but also HIS AFFECTION would be focused on where His people were.
Living under the “EYES OF THE LORD” ought be a sobering thought, but it should also be a source of great encouragement to us. Lord willing we will consider this thought further tomorrow.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY WHERE GOD HAS FOCUSED HIS EYES AND HEART!

Life Under The King!
When Solomon took the throne of his father David, the description of the time of his reign was a pleasant one. Note the following short description of this period of time for God’s people under Solomon’s rule.
We read. . .
“(20) JUDAH AND ISRAEL were as many as the sand by the sea. THEY ate and drank and WERE HAPPY. (21) Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt. They brought tribute and served Solomon all the days of his life.” (1 Kings 4:20-21 ESV)
Note also the observation of the queen of Sheba when she visited Solomon.
“(6) And she said to the king, ‘The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, (7) but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report that I heard. (8) HAPPY ARE YOUR MEN! HAPPY ARE YOUR SERVANTS, WHO CONTINUALLY STAND BEFORE YOU AND HEAR YOUR WISDOM!’” (1 Kings 10:6-8 ESV)
What a blessed time to have been a citizen of the land. Unfortunately not all of the kings who ruled over Israel and Judah provided the HAPPY LIFE enjoyed during the days of Solomon. However, through the line of David there was to come a King Whose kingdom would never end (Daniel 2:44; Luke 1:32-33) and today we have the opportunity and privilege to live under the rule of the MOST MAGNIFICENT MONARCH for which we could ever hope.
How HAPPY we should be to live under the GUIDANCE OF HIS WISDOM, as everyone on the side of truth listens to KING JESUS. (John 18:37) How HAPPILY at peace we should be knowing that our Jesus is KING VICTORIOUS, able to conquer His foes being “Lord of lords and King of kings.” (Revelation 17:14)
We should also be HAPPY because OUR KING is no tyrant, but truly has our greatest needs at heart. As Paul noted in his first letter to Timothy. . .
“(15) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world TO SAVE SINNERS, of whom I am the foremost. (16) But I RECEIVED MERCY for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display HIS PERFECT PATIENCE as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. (17) To THE KING OF AGES, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:15-17 ESV)
Under King Solomon “they ate and drank and WERE HAPPY.” As citizens of the kingdom of Christ, may we eat up OUR KINGS teaching, drink in His Spirit, and BE HAPPY to serve under His Sovereign rule! Praise God for a KING Who reigns with justice and mercy. The more we come to know Him the less desire we will have to live under the rule of another. His kingdom is established. May its borders continue to encompass our heart.
Have a great day LIVING AS JOYFUL CITIZENS OF CHRIST’S ETERNAL KINGDOM!

A Holy Place!
To have been able to see the temple built under the direction of Solomon would have been awesome. Every time I read the description of the temple itself (1 Kings 6; 2 Chronicles 2-3) and its furnishing I am struck by how beautiful and ornate it must have been inside. The outside, however, was not as majestic as the elaborate interior. Centuries later, under the direction of Herod the Great as he attempted to gain favor among the Jews, the temple was rebuilt with perhaps more attention to the exterior of the structure to draw attention to its magnificence. However, within about forty years of our Lord’s crucifixion, it met its end in destruction as Jesus Himself had foretold. (Matthew 24:1-2)
When it comes to people’s lives, some focus a considerable amount of attention on beautifying the outside or getting buffed up. Perhaps there are those who view their body as a temple of which, in a sense, they worship. Is as much attention placed on the condition within?
The temple of Solomon was to draw ATTENTION TO GOD! It was where God had placed His Name. After Solomon built it, God’s glory filled it! (2 Chronicles 7:2) This temple was where the nation of Israel came to meet God and therefore nothing unholy (whether person or offering) was to enter in.
In Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth he exhorted. . .
“(18) Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. (19) Or do you not know that YOUR BODY IS A TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, (20) for you were bought with a price. SO GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY.” (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 ESV)
Here is another, but even more glorious structure, not made with hands, but a creation of God. As Christians we are to recognize what we have become and serious consideration is to be given to what goes on within and around this temple. It may not look like much on the outside to some, but surrendered to God Who works an inside job of transforming our lives, this temple becomes more and more beautiful and ornate within because of the holiness He brings to us. May we keep that magnificence in mind as we live to draw the ATTENTION TO HIM, understanding the GOD GLORIFYING purpose for which this temple (our body) is to be used.
Have a great day BEING FILLED MORE AND MORE WITH HIS GLORY!

Keep It Limber!
There are times we may not rest properly and wake up with a stiff neck. Such can be extremely painful. Perhaps as the day goes on the stiff neck reminds us of its presence as we try to TURN OUR HEAD to the left or right and again feel the pain. Due to the stiffness of the neck our perspective can be limited because it feels more comfortable to keep the head still with the focus straight ahead. This restricts the vision from what else is going on, only allowing us to look the direction we are facing. If we are not facing the right direction, we may be missing what ought to be seen!
When the Scriptures refer to being “stiff-necked” it is a reference to a stubborn and unyielding spirit. Again and again we find such used to describe the nation of Israel. (i.e. Exodus 32:9; 33:3 & 5; 34:9) Unfortunately, even at the coming of the long awaited Messiah, it was stiff-neckedness that hurt the ability of many to see as they ought.
When Stephen was seized and brought before the Jewish council where he was accused by false witnesses (Acts 6:11-14), he took the opportunity to present a brief history lesson spanning from the time of God’s covenant with Abraham to the time of the kings and prophets. Then Stephen noted the present disposition that was hurting their ability to acknowledge the great work God had brought about.
We read. . .
“(51) YOU STIFF-NECKED PEOPLE, uncircumcised in heart and ears, YOU ALWAYS RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT. As your fathers did, so do you. (52) Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, (53) you who RECEIVED THE LAW as delivered by angels AND DID NOT KEEP IT.” (Acts 7:51-53 ESV)
To their harm they would not listen! (note also verse 57) What the Holy Spirit had revealed through the prophets and was at that present time speaking through the Apostles and others was not being yielded to. Anytime we read through the Scriptures and walk away ignoring what we have read, to our hurt we too have resisted that which has come through the Holy Spirit. As we turn the pages of Scripture, let us also humbly TURN OUR HEADS toward God and His Will with an eager willingness to submit to it. May His Word always be a cause to TURN OUR HEAD not away, but toward Him.
Have a great day WITH EAR, HEART, AND HEAD TURNING TO GOD!

Fellow Workers!
Certainly two can gain a better return for their labor than one due to the combined energy, strength, and wisdom. Solomon even stated as much where we read. . .
“TWO are better than one, because they HAVE A GOOD REWARD FOR THEIR TOIL.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9 ESV)
The New Living translation reads. . . “Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor.” (NLT, © 1997, Tyndale House)
Solomon went on to discuss other benefits of the help two can be to each other (Ecclesiastes 4:10-12), even expressing pity (vs.10) for the one who is alone. What A JOY AND STRENGTH it is to work with others. What A RELIEF to not have to work alone! Not only does the company help the time pass quicker, but the shared load is lighter, and the tasks fulfilled through the hands of many may be more complete than tasks done alone.
In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth he encouraged. . .
“Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.” (2 Corinthians 6:1 ESV)
Paul appreciated his fellow laborers in the work of the Lord. There was Luke, Silas, Barnabas, John Mark (whom Paul grew to appreciate), Timothy, and Trophimus -- just to name a few. To be involved in the challenging, yet glorious work of God with others of kindred spirit can create A JOY beyond measure. However, that is not all Paul had in mind. There is a “HIM” Paul mentioned we should not forget. These individuals among others were fellow workers with Paul TOGETHER WITH GOD Whom Paul had been referring to in the last verses of the previous chapter.
GOD must be kept in the picture. Though we may labor and do so with the help of one another, the work in which we are involved needs to be HIS WORK! Apart from Him and our retention of a relationship with Him our working will be in vain, even with regard to the grace He has extended.
This is something Solomon acknowledged in a song of ascents when he wrote. . .
“UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS the house, those who build it labor in vain. UNLESS THE LORD WATCHES over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.” (Psalm 127:1) ESV)
The acknowledgment of the work of human hands is there, but the focus is to ultimately be on the joint labor WITH THE LORD. As much JOY AND ENCOURAGEMENT as we receive in working with one another -- something not to be minimized nor unappreciated -- let us not grow weary in pressing on with the WORK OF GOD knowing He also remains a CO-LABORER with us as we seek to fulfill His Purposes and Will! What POWERFUL TEAMWORK where God is included!
Have a great day REJOICING IN BEING AN ACTIVE PART OF HIS TEAM!

Today's Puddles!
It rains and rains . . . the ground softens and turns to mud . . . puddles appear everywhere . . . some puddles turn into lakes . . . some trickles turn into streams . . . and then the rain stops . . . the clouds part . . . the sun shines . . . and the puddles evaporate. Has this not been what we have witnessed? Is it not what is expected? Do we not acknowledge the rains and storms will pass? Is it not the same regarding life?
Someone has said, “Most of today’s worries are like puddles . . . tomorrow they will have evaporated.” How many times has that also been our experience? During the stormy times of life should we not retain the expectation that they will pass and brighter times will come?
It is true that heavy rains and storms sometimes do some damage and we may have to deal with some damage in our life, but even the puddles of anxiety formed through the trials, will EVAPORATE. There are times when life’s “rain” catches our attention, but then the results of it VAPORIZE without us even having to deal with it. As the sun is always shining above the dark clouds, so the “SON” still shines above. Knowing this ought to help our anxiousness DISSIPATE. Let us TRUST HIM to clear the clouds and shine on us with the light of His love.
May I encourage you with the words (words that have been referred to as a priestly blessing) God instructed Moses to have Aaron and his sons say to the nation of Israel. We read. . .
“(24) The LORD bless you and keep you; (25) the LORD MAKE HIS FACE TO SHINE UPON YOU and be gracious to you; (26) the LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26 ESV)
Have a peaceful day IN THE “SONSHINE” OF GOD’S LOVE!

Who Pulled The Plug?
While in college I worked as a custodian at the Shriner’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Quite often while running the vacuum cleaner (or the floor buffing machine) it would suddenly quit working. It wouldn’t take long, however, to notice the reason was due to no electricity. Someone had “pulled the plug!” This was an enjoyable prank we frequently pulled on one another or other hospital staff would pull on us.
Though the above example may be indicative of a lighter side of life, there are other circumstances under which the expression “pulling the plug” is understood to be a very serious thing to consider. I have been with families in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital as they wrestled with the decision whether it was now time to pull the plug on the machine that was actually doing the breathing the body could no longer do on its own. Such is a very difficult time for families surrounding a loved one whose life has drawn to an end. Praise God for the comfort of hope beyond this life.
There is another serious context in which “pulling the plug” should be considered as being even more consequential. This is a matter of not merely a physical, but a spiritual nature. Mankind disconnected or “unplugged” from God, is dead.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, he stated the following regarding their former life prior to having become Christians.
“(12) remember that you were at that time SEPARATED FROM CHRIST, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having NO HOPE and WITHOUT GOD in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12 ESV)
Note the expressions emphasized: “separated from Christ” and therefore “having no hope” and also being “without God.” That is not a very encouraging picture. Left in that state it is one of hopelessness! “Unplugged” we cannot have THE LIFE JESUS CAME TO PROVIDE. (John 10:10) Later in John’s first short letter he would emphatically write “whoever does NOT HAVE THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT HAVE LIFE.” (1 John 5:12 ESV)
Praise God it does not have to be that way! Through being united with Christ in baptism we become connected to God and receive the SUSTAINING POWER OUR LIFE NEEDS. Paul noted this as we wrote to the church at Colossae where we read. . .
“(11) In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, (12) having been BURIED WITH HIM IN BAPTISM, in which you were also RAISED WITH HIM THROUGH FAITH in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. (13) And you, who WERE DEAD in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, GOD MADE ALIVE TOGETHER WITH HIM, having forgiven us all our trespasses,” (Colossians 2:11-13 ESV)
Plugged into God, HE IS ABLE TO BRING LIFE to that which was formerly dead! However, just as a vacuum cleaner cord will come unplugged from the power source if it is moved too far from it, so with our life we cannot expect to remain plugged in if we move away from LIFE’S TRUE POWER SOURCE! If we find our life becoming “unplugged”, let us be encouraged it is possible to get plugged back in. Perhaps we might view Christ as the “conduit” by which our connection (or reconnection) to God is made possible. Every day, may we continually seek to remain plugged into God, the GIVER, AUTHOR, AND SUSTAINER OF LIFE that will stretch on into a glorious forever!
Have a great day CONNECTED TO THE SOURCE OF LIFE FOR NOW AND ETERNITY!

World Connection! (part 4 of 4)
[04/18/2008 “teEn-MAIL”]
WORLD CONNECTION! (part 4 of 4)
Yesterday we noted part of our Lord’s prayer for the disciples and their connection with the world. As Jesus continued that prayer He noted another godly desire that has a world connection.
We read. . .
“(20) I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, (21) that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, SO THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE SENT ME. (22) The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, (23) I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, SO THAT THE WORLD MAY KNOW that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” (John 17:20-23 ESV)
Even as Jesus prayed for the twelve, He was also mindful of those who would believe through their message. In this regard His prayer moved beyond the present to a focus on subsequent believers. Can we understand and be encouraged by the sense in which that includes us who also now believe? Through our living out our belief in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, there is another world connection of which we are to be mindful. That connection relates to HOW THIS WORLD PERCEIVES US and what our life together says about the Lord we claim to serve. Our unity together as believers in Christ is to be a beautiful and powerful testimony to the world that JESUS IS THE ONE sent to save and reconcile (bring back) humanity with God. With Jesus’ mission carried out on the basis of such a great love, the world may get its first view of that Divine love in seeing how we as His followers are with each other and receive their first taste of that Divine love in the manner in which we touch their lives. May it be Jesus Who is seen as the real unifying power among us as we commit ourselves to striving to be Christ-like in all we do and say.
Have a great day LIVING SO THAT OTHERS WILL BELIEVE!

World Connection! (part 3 of 4)
[04/17/2008 “teEn-MAIL”]
WORLD CONNECTION! (part 3 of 4)
As we have noted over the past two days, our love for the world (souls in need of salvation) and our ties to the things of the world must be kept in proper perspective. What is passing and what is abiding need to be properly discerned. If that is not done, in the process of living we may find our affections wrongfully attached.
In Jesus’ prayer for His disciples He noted their relationship to the world in the following manner.
“(14) I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are NOT OF THE WORLD, just as I am not of the world. (15) I DO NOT ASK THAT YOU TAKE THEM OUT OF THE WORLD, but that you keep them from the evil one. (16) They are NOT OF THE WORLD, just as I am not of the world. (17) Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (18) As you sent me into the world, so I have SENT THEM INTO THE WORLD.” (John 17:14-18 ESV)
Jesus’ prayer noted His disciples as being IN THE WORLD, but NOT OF IT. This was (and is) an important distinction to bear in mind. Though they would continue living IN THE WORLD they were not to be living like the world, but rather in accordance with the Will of Heaven. Of necessity they were to continue IN THE WORLD, because if they were taken out of the world there was no way they could reach the world with the saving message of salvation in Christ. Just as Jesus came into this world to save it, the disciples WERE TO CONTINUE THAT WORK of drawing others to Him for the salvation of their souls.
We also must recognize the DIVINE PURPOSE for which we are IN THE WORLD, as we conduct our lives in a manner that reveals we are not of the world, but rather are of God! Our connection with God and the world is to be continually kept in balance so that our life can be a tool of God in providing the godly benefit and example this world needs. As we allow more and more of the character and essence of God to take over in our life, more of the world will be moved out so that our life can become more influential in drawing the world’s attention toward Him. We cannot fulfill this Divine purpose by hiding away somewhere. Therefore, as we go about our day to day activities may we do so as His lights in a dark world in need of seeing more clearly the Way (John 14:6) to Him.
Have a great day LIVING HEAVEN’S PURPOSE ON EARTH!

World Connection! (part 2 of 4)
God so loved the world that He sent His Son to provide the means of eternal life. In what way is OUR OWN LOVE DIRECTED in connection with this world? To what are OUR AFFECTIONS attached!
John exhorted. . .
“(15) Do NOT LOVE THE WORLD OR THE THINGS IN THE WORLD. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world -- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions -- is not from the Father but is from the world. (17) And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:15-17 ESV)
Not love the world? But isn’t that what John 3:16 stated “God so loved”? The world John had in mind here is different than what was noted in the words of Jesus in John’s Gospel. The term “world” may refer to this globe on which we live, the people living on it, or the tendencies (worldliness or worldly things such as the inclinations of fleshly man) of the world. In the context of John’s exhortation he noted the world to which he was referring as “the things” in it in contrast to what is associated with the Father. To love “the things in the world” can easily sidetrack us from the things of God. Therefore our focus needs to be most on that which is lasting, rather than on that which will pass away. In Paul’s second letter to Timothy he noted those whose lives were marked by misdirected AFFECTIONS; being lovers of self, money, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, heartless, not loving good, and lovers of pleasure instead of being lovers of God. (2 Timothy 3:2-4 ESV) What is that toward which OUR LOVE is being directed?
In this world we are to be involved not in doing the world’s will, but rather in having a LOVE AFFAIR WITH DOING THE WILL OF GOD. It is through the abiding connection with God’s Will that we have the assurance of abiding forever. Let us guard against OUR AFFECTIONS being connected to the wrong realm. May we instead find the ways in which while living in this world we can connect with it in the LOVE OF GOD so as to draw others toward Him and the wisdom of His Will.
Have a great day MAINTAINING PROPERLY DIRECTED AFFECTIONS!

World Connection! (part 1 of 4)
People talk about having connections. Usually that means they are able to gain certain privileges or special access because of people or organizations they know. We live in a world of close connectivity. Perhaps there are none so closely connected as teens who are able to text message each other anytime and from just about anywhere. Cell phones have become a great help in keeping us connected, as well as computers where with just a click of the mouse we can be linked with the world and what is going on around it. There has never been an era of such connectivity as the one in which we are presently living.
With connectivity comes a sense of responsibility. What do we do with all the information we access? Also, is there a God glorifying purpose we can acknowledge and utilize in our connecting with the world. Our connection with the world can be both a blessing and a curse depending on the higher purpose we keep in mind.
As Jesus was talking with Nicodemus, He stated. . .
“(16) For GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (17) For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order THAT THE WORLD MIGHT BE SAVED through him.” (John 3:16-17 ESV)
This was God’s DIVINE PURPOSE of sending the Son into the world. It was to provide the means of THE WORLD’S SALVATION that Jesus came. “God so loved the world” He sent the very best with what was best for humanity in mind. God, the Creator of the world is the great Provider for both its physical and spiritual needs. As the world had distanced itself from the God Who had created it, the Son was sent to reconnect (reconcile) humanity with its God. Jesus must be acknowledge as the only means of reconnecting (John 14:6) with the Father or the hope of eternal life will be lost. Are we maintaining that connection through Christ?
Praise God for redemption and reconciliation made possible by Jesus Christ having come into this world. Thanks be to the Heavenly Father Who loved enough to send the Son into this world to provide an example for how we can live pleasing to God and for the cleansing that is ours by the power of His blood. As we reflect on our connection with the Father through the Son, let us also consider the manner in which we are connected to this world. May that be in accordance with God’s DIVINE PURPOSE for our life as we love enough to direct others back toward a connection with Him.
Have a great day HELPING OTHERS RECONNECT WITH GOD THROUGH CHRIST!

Walking Off The Job!
What would it take to cause someone to walk off the job? An argument with the boss or another employee? A heightened sense of frustration over work conditions? A better job offer? Such a thing is generally not done lightly, but when it is, others may be caused to wonder if it is the wise thing to do? What is recognized as being of the greatest significance is what will ultimately determine whether one stays or goes.
When Jesus began calling others to follow Him, there were some who responded, “but first let me. . . .” (i.e. Luke 9:57-62) [Also note Jesus’ point regarding excusing self from the kingdom invitation. (Luke 14:16-20)] There was something these were not ready to leave behind; at least not immediately. However, following Jesus brings many changes to life, including a SHIFTING OF PRIORITIES AND VALUES!
Note the response when Jesus called the first four disciples.
“(18) While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. (19) And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ (20) IMMEDIATELY THEY LEFT THEIR NETS and followed him. (21) And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. (22) IMMEDIATELY THEY LEFT THE BOAT AND THEIR FATHER and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-22 ESV)
Fishing had been their livelihood. It had been the family business. I would like to have seen the look on Zebedee’s face. I also wonder what kind of conversation may have taken place between any other fishermen who might have been there watching these four walk off the job. I don’t know how many years they had been involved in fishing, but when Jesus called them, they were willing to leave it behind!
Peter had a house and a wife. We know this because we read of Jesus entering Peter’s house and healing his mother-in-law. (Matthew 8:14) Paul also mentioned Peter (Cephas) as having a “believing wife.” (1 Corinthians 9:5) However, THE BUSINESS of Peter’s life (and that of the other disciples) made a dynamic shift. We also must comes to grips with this as we step out in accepting Jesus’ invitation to follow Him.
What do we see as the REAL BUSINESS of our life? Teens, as you begin setting your goals for life, give this very serious consideration! Those beyond the teen years, perhaps there is the need to do some life reassessing. Certainly there is the need for working to make a living and provide for family (1 Timothy 5:8), but are we significantly occupied with fulfilling the LORD’S BUSINESS as we go through life? Even in the midst of fulfilling earthly responsibilities we must develop discernment toward how all of our life fits in with following Jesus. Walking with Him, that is a task of which we must never walk off, for no one can ever come close to a better and more glorious job offer than His with retirement benefits out of this world!
Have a great day KEEPING HIS BUSINESS OURS!

Marking The Relationship!
When a young man finds the girl with whom he wants to GET SERIOUS about the relationship, the first step is a marriage proposal. Some proposals have taken place in strange places (i.e. while skydiving, at a ballgame, etc.) or have been made special through great detail going into the setting up of the occasion. Still, the words most often spoken are the usual, “Will you marry me?” Those were not the words I used when I proposed to my wife. When I BECAME SERIOUS about the relationship, I was also considering doing mission work. Therefore, my words were, “Would you go with me?”, because I needed someone who was willing to FOLLOW ME wherever the work of God might take me. I still thank God she was willing. Through the years we have been challenged in the work at various places and times, but my wife has continued to FOLLOW ME and been a tremendous encourager and supporter of my labors in the Lord. She has even done this in a sacrificial manner.
Remember the beautiful relationship between Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi. Though Ruth’s husband had died, she was SERIOUS about keeping the relationship with her mother-in-law and so her words to Naomi were. . .
“(16) But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For WHERE YOU GO I WILL GO, and WHERE YOU LODGE I WILL LODGE. YOUR PEOPLE shall be MY PEOPLE, and YOUR GOD MY GOD. (17) WHERE YOU DIE I WILL DIE, and there will I be buried. May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.’” (Ruth 1:16-17 ESV)
Though Ruth was a Moabite, she returned with Naomi to Bethlehem. Then through a series of events and her continued faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Ruth became a part of the lineage of Jesus, being the great grandmother of David. (Matthew 1:5-6)
When Jesus began calling others to BECOME SERIOUS about the relationship He desired for them to have with Him, that calling was accompanied by the words “FOLLOW ME!” That is what Jesus told Peter and Andrew. (Mark 1:16-17) Jesus also used those words when He called Levi [also called Matthew, (Matthew 9:9)] while he was busy collecting taxes. (Mark 2:14) Later on Peter acknowledged having left everything to FOLLOW HIM. (Mark 10:28) Peter and the others were SERIOUS about the relationship. What about us?
This SERIOUSNESS of discipleship was stated by Jesus when He said. . .
“And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, ‘IF ANYONE WOULD COME AFTER ME, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF AND TAKE UP HIS CROSS AND FOLLOW ME.” (Mark 8:34 ESV)
If we are going to BE SERIOUS about the relationship with Jesus, we also must be willing to FOLLOW HIM! It is imperative that this mark the relationship we have with Him because anyone who does not follow, “is not worthy of” Him. (Matthew 10:38) The preceding verses point to the necessity of Jesus holding first place of all our relationships. May such mark our continued following.
Have a great day SERIOUS ABOUT STICKING WITH THE SAVIOR!

A Blessing And challenge!
John drew attention to many encouraging assurances and truths that are ours in Christ as he wrote testifying to the truth of what he had both seen and heard. (1 John 1:1-3) Because of all that is associated with our fellowship with the Father and the Son (1 John 1:3) and also with each other, we find ourselves both greatly blessed and challenged! Perhaps that is no more true than with regard to the subject of FORGIVENESS.
John affirmed and encouraged. . .
“(7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN. (8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) If we confess our sins, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS and to CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS. (10) If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:7-10 ESV)
The reality is we cannot deny sin’s presence in our life. To do so is to be deceived and to declare God a liar. Praise God for the glorious provision in Christ as we continue in fellowship with Him and with one another. God is “faithful and just” to FORGIVE and CLEANSE us of sin and unrighteousness by the powerful blood of Jesus! Oh, what a wonderful blessing we have received. However, that great blessing of FORGIVENESS is sometimes a challenge to us when it comes to our own extension of it!
Jesus exhorted. . .
“(3) Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, (4) and IF HE SINS AGAINST YOU SEVEN TIMES IN THE DAY, AND TURNS TO YOU SEVEN TIMES, SAYING, ‘I REPENT,’ YOU MUST FORGIVE HIM.” (Luke 17:3-4 ESV)
First note Jesus began with the exhortation to “Pay attention to yourselves!” Not doing this is at the core of the challenge. Recognizing our own CONTINUING NEED for the FORGIVENESS of God and others should dynamically impact the manner in which we view others and respond to them. But, “seven times in the day”? That’s what Jesus said! In reality are we not challenged by only two or three? Again, we need to consider the daily FORGIVENESS we have received and God’s willingness to extend it as we penitently turn to Him.
A willingness to extend FORGIVENESS is of paramount importance because the lack of it generally makes us bitter, rather than better! It also creates division between us and a brother or sister rather than drawing us together. The unwillingness to FORGIVE can also ultimately hinder and even stop the work of God either in our own life or the life of others! May we not be party to such a thing as would serve the devil’s purposes rather than God’s.
Let us rightfully rejoice in the blessing FORGIVENESS brings to our life and to the lives of others. It is a blessed gift of God that meets our CONTINUAL NEED! May we also look to God for His help in nurturing the heart, humility, strength, and wisdom needed for extending that FORGIVENESS as freely as we have received. Paying attention to ourselves in considering our own indebtedness to the Lord should open our heart wider to others in eliminating the challenge and creating a greater willingness to extend the blessing.
Have a great day NURTURING THE MERCIFUL HEART OF GOD!

Buried Below!
When it comes to the faults and shortcomings of others, there are those who seem to delight in dredging or digging them up for remembrance again. No matter how hard some try to move forward in life, there are those who seem unwilling to let them live down their past! Instead of experiencing remission there is continual remembrance.
Someone has said, “Every person should have a special cemetery plot in which to bury the faults of friends and loved one.” [source: calendar quote]
Certainly we ought to encourage growth and help one another toward maturing in Christ. However, there is a difference between that desire and possessing the faultfinding spirit Jesus exhorted against. (Matthew 7:1-5) There is a great contrast between judgment that distinguishes between right and wrong and simply being judgmental. The first can help direct while the other usually divides.
The prophet Micah noted God’s willingness as follows:
“(19) Who is a God like you, PARDONING INIQUITY AND PASSING OVER TRANSGRESSION for the remnant of his inheritance? HE DOES NOT RETAIN HIS ANGER FOREVER, because he delights in steadfast love. (19) He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. YOU WILL CAST ALL OUR SINS INTO THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA.” (Micah 7:18-19 ESV)
A BURIAL AT SEA! Sins CAST INTO THE DEPTHS from which they will not resurface. That is the blessing of God. Having received such FORGIVENESS, are we willing to extend it in like manner?
Paul exhorted…
“(32) Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, FORGIVING ONE ANOTHER, AS GOD IN CHRIST FORGAVE YOU.” (Ephesians 4:32 ESV)
How willing are we to offer the grace to others that God has extended to us? If we truly appreciate what we have received, won’t it be displayed in how we are with others? Or do we share the guilt of the unmerciful (unforgiving) servant? (parable of Matthew 18:23-35) [If it has been a while since you read that parable I would suggest you do so.] Jesus provided this lesson because of a question Peter asked regarding FORGIVENESS. (Matthew 18:21-22) It is a lesson still worthy of learning. May our willingness to FORGIVE truly be an expression of our sincere appreciation for God’s gracious gift to us as we do so from the depths of our heart.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE DEPTH OF GOD’S LOVE TO DEAL WITH SIN!

Dealing With The Weeds!
Now that Spring has sprung, so has a lot of work in neighboring yards. I’ve seen people fertilizing, spraying and spreading weed killer on lawns, pulling up weeds by hand; all in an effort to make their gardens and lawns look beautiful. Getting out all the weeds can be laborious work with all the bending and pulling it takes. However, is as much attention being paid to the “weeds” that have taken root within lives? How many of those beautified yards surround houses where what lies within is conflict and dysfunction? Also, how many individual lives may appear lovely on the outside, but full of weeds within?
For the weeds that grow in our gardens and yards, I guess we can blame Adam. (Genesis 3:17-18) However, for the weeds in our own life, we must take responsibility for them ourselves. For what do we need “weed killer”?
Paul exhorted. . .
“(5) PUT TO DEATH therefore WHAT IS EARTHLY IN YOU: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” (Colossians 3:5 ESV)
It is on account of such “weeds” as these popping up in this world that the wrath of God is coming. (verse 6) Dropping down a few verses Paul’s list went on to include anger, wrath, malice, slander, obscene talk, and lying (verses 8-9) that also must be eliminated. To leave the weeds allows them to spread and weeds can be prolific! They don’t seem to need any help at all to grow!
Paul went on to point toward what the weeding will then leave room for the cultivation of.
“(10) and have put on THE NEW SELF, which is being RENEWED in knowledge AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:10 ESV)
We need to weed out the “earthly” in order to make room for the HEAVENLY QUALITIES with which the new self in Christ is to be renewed. Paul went to list some of these GODLY BLOOMS as “compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience”, as well as bearing with and forgiving one another as we ourselves have been forgiven by the Lord, and also love. (verses 12-14). With the help of the Master Gardener and Creator of life, may we root out the earthly and make room for the HEAVENLY as our LIFE BLOOMS to His glory where we have been planted.
Have a great day BECOMING A GARDEN OF DELIGHT TO THE LORD!

Considering Our Part!
When we get in a hurry -- when our mind is on what we ourselves are going to do -- it can be easy to be found only half listening to what another is saying. A teen heading out to join friends in an activity may be rushing out the door with a parent asking, “Did you hear me?” and responding as the door is shutting, “Ya, I heard you.” However, what really marked the listening? Was the parent’s communication to their teen truly successful? Or was the communication something the teen “thought” they had heard before and so what they “heard” (i.e. what registered in their mind) was merely what they thought was going to be said? Is such a tendency outgrown as one moves into adulthood? Is the listening what it ought to be for any of us even with regard to the message of God? Do we find ourselves either reading or hearing passages we feel are so familiar we might be missing the fresh application for today?
Jesus was the Master Teacher. Reading through the Gospels we see His wisdom in the manner in which He responded to questions. He knew what message was needed for the moment. Everything He spoke was a truth to be pondered. Still, part of the success in communicating those truths depended on the one to whom they were spoken.
Luke recorded the following words from Jesus.
“(16) No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. (17) For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. (18) TAKE CARE THEN HOW YOU HEAR, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” (Luke 8:16-18 ESV)
Listening to the teaching of Jesus was the opportunity to be enlightened. The truths He taught were not to be hidden, but as the “Word [that] became flesh” and being “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14) walked this earth, the light of the Gospel (good news of salvation in Christ) was being made manifest. However, those who listened needed to TAKE CARE HOW THEY WERE HEARING! As each truth was taken to heart, more could be easily built upon it, and the knowledge of God’s Will would continue to increase. If the listening was not as it should be, even what one began to hear could be lost.
Earlier in this chapter, Luke recorded Jesus closing the parable of the “Sower” with the statement, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Luke 8:8) Perhaps in today’s language we might hear someone say, “You’ve got two ears, use them!” The full picture of communication is not just having something said, but having it received and understood. Therefore we must understand that regardless of how clearly some things are made, if the HEARING is not as it should be, communication has failed.
Taking CARE HOW WE HEAR as we interact with others is the considerate thing to do and will help guard against many misunderstandings. Taking CARE HOW WE HEAR when it comes to the enlightenment of God’s message will reveal our interest in and reverence for His Will, as well as help guard against our departing from The Way that leads to eternal life. Does He have our COMPLETE ATTENTION? May we use the ears God gave us for the purpose for which He made them so that we may receive the blessings He desires to provide for life now and for eternity.
Have a great day GIVING GOD’S WILL OUR UNDIVIDED ATTENTION!

Fishing!
Fishing may be an enjoyable way to pass the time, but should one not be mindful of that for which they are fishing? There are heavy fines for fish caught out of season. Also, in some waters, what is pulled into the boat could be dangerous. Another thing to consider is what kind of bait is being used and what it might attract. Is there a sense in which all of this may also be true with regard to our purpose in life?
Peter, Andrew, James, and John had been partners in fishing. When Jesus called them to follow Him, He told them He was going to make them fishermen of a different sort; “FISHERS OF MEN.” (Matthew 4:19) Jesus was going to train them for the work of reaching out to lost souls.
Someone has stated, “Some preachers fish for compliments while others fish for men.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
Such is worthy of introspection by any preacher of the Word. However, for all of us as Christians, should we not be mindful of WHAT WE ARE FISHING FOR and what might be the bait we are casting out there hoping for a bite?
Jesus cautioned…
“WOE TO YOU, WHEN ALL PEOPLE SPEAK WELL OF YOU, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.” (Luke 6:26 ESV)
The most popular prophets were those who spoke what the people wanted to hear. (note Micah 2:11) The ones who spoke the truth often had their lives threatened.
We all appreciate compliments. We are encouraged when others speak well of us. However, we must be cautious that we do not allow the compliments of others to cause us to begin pleasing them more than seeking to please God. (note contrast between John 12:43 and Acts 5:29) Certainly there are aspects of our Christian life that should be seen as good and honorable by the world. Nevertheless, it is possible to reach a point where we are highly complimented by the world because we are not much different from it. As Jesus noted in His prayer for His disciples, we too should recognize the sense in which we are in the world, but not of it. (John 17:14-18) Earlier Jesus had told His disciples that if they were of the world, the world would love them as its own. (John 15:19) They were in the world for a purpose and that was not to fish for compliments, but to please God by remaining focused on FISHING FOR MEN. And the truth of the Gospel of Jesus -- not the ideologies of the world or simply saying what others might want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3) -- is still to be the bait held out as others are drawn in.
Like the disciples we too need to be faithful to the trust we have received, to the message we have been given, and therefore to the great need of the souls of others being drawn to Christ. May the saving truth others need to hear be more important to us than the compliments we might receive as we bear in mind that “in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2) it is open season for the souls around us.
Have a great day KEEPING THE LINE OF GOD OUT THERE!

Unhealthy Disorder!
Bulimia is an eating disorder exhibited by bouts of overeating that are followed by under-eating or methods of getting rid of what was eaten through either the use of laxatives or self-induced vomiting. It is an eating disorder associated with depression and anxiety about gaining weight. The English word “bulimia” comes from the modern Latin through the Greek word “boulimia” which literally refers to the “hunger of an ox” (Gk. “bous” for “ox” and “limos” for “hunger”). [source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary © 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation]
The description of bulimia is not a pretty picture. It is a disorder for which one who struggles needs help because it is a condition that is harmful to the body and can ultimately result in death. Would that not also be God’s view of SPIRITUAL BULIMIA?
SPIRITUAL BULIMIA? What condition would that be? As in the case of the eating disorder, though there is a hunger being met when food is eaten, that food is then QUICKLY DISPELLED from the body and therefore no benefit is received. The same is true with SPIRITUAL BULIMIA. How often is God’s Word taken in -- as was done yesterday through Bible class discussion and the preaching of the Word -- ONLY TO BE THROWN OUT BY THE TIME ONE ARRIVES AT HOME? Though it is enjoyed in the first hearing and may even be praised, it is sadly discarded before having the opportunity to bring nourishing benefit to the life!
When Jesus told the parable of the sower [the parable (Luke 8:5-8) and its explanation (Luke 8:11-15)], He described four different heart conditions. There was the hard heart (the path) that never gave the message a chance. Jesus also noted the shallow life (that among the rocks) where the message could not take good root. Then there was the heart distracted by the concerns of life (thorny ground) where the message was choked out and not allowed to mature. Finally, Jesus described the “good soil” which He noted as follows:
“(15) As for that in the good soil, they are THOSE WHO, HEARING THE WORD, HOLD IT FAST IN AN HONEST AND GOOD HEART, AND BEAR FRUIT WITH PATIENCE.” (Luke 8:15 ESV)
This is the description of one who RETAINS THE WORD the spiritual life needs to sustain it and be fruitful. The New King James Version notes such as those who “KEEP” THE WORD. May we guard against developing such a condition that GOD’S WORD is not being RETAINED.
As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he exhorted. . .
“(1) Now I would remind you, brothers, of THE GOSPEL I PREACHED TO YOU, which you received, in which you stand, (2) and BY WHICH YOU ARE BEING SAVED, IF YOU HOLD FAST TO THE WORD I PREACHED TO YOU -- unless you believed in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:1-2)
Praise God for the opportunities that are ours to FEAST ON HIS WORD. May we be “hungry as an ox” when it is set before us, with a desire to RETAIN what we are taking in so that we may continually be spiritually enriched, thus being enabled to live fruitful lives to the glory of God.
Have a great day WELL FED AND THUS WELL LED!

Reality Of Presumption!
In 1 Samuel 15 we have the account of Saul going out to fight against Amalek. Before the battle Saul was instructed by the LORD through Samuel that he was to devote all the Amalekites had to destruction. Nothing was to be spared either among man or beast. This was God’s judgment against that nation for having earlier opposed Israel when they came up out of Egypt. (vss.1-3) Though there were other times God allowed His people to take of the spoils of war, nothing was to be saved from the victory over the Amalekites. Unfortunately Saul only partially obeyed. All the people were devoted to destruction by the edge of the sword, but the life of Agag (the king of the Amalekites), as well as the best of the sheep, oxen, fattened calves, the lambs, and all that was good were not completely destroyed. (vs.9)
It appears Saul was proud of himself following the victory because he set up a monument for himself at Carmel. (vs.12) Though he may have been pleased with himself, God was not pleased and Samuel was sent to confront Saul. Upon their meeting, King Saul declared, “I have performed the commandment of the LORD.” (vs.13) When Samuel brought up the sound of the bleating of sheep and the lowing of the oxen in his ears (vs.14) Saul began with one of those notorious “Oh that! Well…” statements that are still heard today when one gets caught with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar. God had given a direct and very specific command, but Saul and the people came up with a “BETTER” IDEA. Saul explained they had brought all the “best of the sheep and of the oxen to sacrifice to the LORD” (vs.15), but the rest had been devoted to destruction. However, that was not what God had commanded. Saul had not fully obeyed God. It was presumptive on the part of Saul to do what HE THOUGHT WAS “BETTER” than what God had commanded and yet he apparently anticipated God’s acceptance.
Note a portion of Samuel’s response.
“(22) And Samuel said, ‘Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. (23) For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and PRESUMPTION IS AS INIQUITY AND IDOLATRY. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.’” (1 Samuel 15:22-23 ESV)
Note Samuel paralleled the act of presumption (also translated arrogance and stubbornness) with “iniquity and IDOLATRY.” For Saul to disregard what God had commanded and presume to do what HE DECIDED WAS “BETTER” was LIKE PLACING HIMSELF IN THE POSITION OF GOD. Samuel declared that OBEYING GOD WAS “BETTER” than the sacrifices Saul had in mind. What Saul should have sacrificed was his OWN THOUGHTS so that he would have properly submitted to the Will of God. Because Saul rejected God’s Word, he himself was rejected by God as king. (vss.22 and 26-28)
When we presume to choose to do something contrary to what God has commanded, it is idolatry because God is not receiving the worship (worthship) that is rightfully His! To decide OUR WILL or the will of another is “better” than God’s is definitely an act of arrogance and stubbornness. To infer -- either by word or by action -- that we can pick and choose which commands of God to obey is to claim that some of them are important while others make no difference. But who says that is so? God or man? Certainly we must take into consideration who particular commands were spoken to in Scripture, the context in which they were given, and also whether they relate to living under the Law given to Moses or the Law of Christ. However, to sacrifice God’s Will to take up OUR OWN is idolatry because we have exalted OUR OWN THOUGHTS and desires above His.
Let us guard against following in the error of Saul. If we truly desire to be accepted by God we must be willing to accept His Word. Let us not sacrifice obedience, but rather ourselves to the Lord (Romans 12:1) by completely surrendering to His Will. Having OUR THOUGHTS transformed and renewed in accordance with His Will brings our life into contact with that which is truly good, acceptable, and perfect. (Romans 12:2) May His Word and Will be joyfully received.
Have a great day OFFERING GOD WHAT HE DESIRES!

Even In The Struggle!
I believe many of us do what we do because we believe even though we may struggle in the believing. What I mean is, can we not find ourselves speaking the words of one who came to Jesus asking him to heal his son, where when Jesus mentioned the possibilities for those who believe (Mark 9:23) this father responded, “I BELIEVE; HELP MY UNBELIEF!” (Mark 9:24)? In this particular case, the disciples had not been able to bring about the healing. (Mark 9:18) When they later asked Jesus why they had not been able to do so, Jesus pointed them to the need for PRAYER. (Mark 9:29) Though Jesus had empowered His disciples, I think He was trying to remind them there was power beyond themselves that needed to be continually acknowledged and looked toward.
As we continue growing in our faith -- and our knowledge of God and His Word increases -- along with that growth should come the regular practice of PRAYER. Perhaps there are times we find ourselves struggling with the words. Praise God for the Spirit’s help in that. (Romans 8:26-27) I can’t explain it, but I accept the encouragement the Scriptures provide regarding this. As we ask “according to the will of God” (Romans 8:27), there is also the need for nurturing a deeper trust in God’s Will to be done as we are CONFIDENT HE HEARS our requests. (1 John 5:14) Hopefully through our PRAYER LIFE we are learning to believe more fully that what God will bring about will always be best, even when we don’t fully understand the outcome or the timetable He seems to be using. However, though we need to pray believing, does our struggle negate God’s willingness to listen?
There is an example from Scripture that may encourage us on this front. First, let me set the stage for the account Luke recorded in Acts. The Apostle James, the brother of John, was killed by Herod. Seeing how this pleased the Jews, Herod then had Peter arrested and placed under close guard, intending to bring him out before the people following the Passover. This caused the church to be in very EARNEST PRAYER to God on Peter’s behalf. (Acts 12:1-5) Through the following verses we read how God miraculously brought Peter out of the prison, leading him to freedom. However, though we know others were EARNESTLY PRAYING for Peter and their desire was for his safety, what was their expectation? When Peter went to the house where this group had gathered to pray for him, a girl named Rhoda who answered his knock was so overjoyed when she recognized his voice that in her excitement she ran to tell the others without letting Peter in. Having been informed that Peter was at the door, what was the response?
We read. . .
“(15) They said to her, ‘YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND.’ But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “IT IS HIS ANGEL!” (16) But Peter continued knocking, and WHEN THEY OPENED, THEY SAW HIM AND WERE AMAZED.” (Acts 12:15-16 ESV)
Where was the belief? For what had they been PRAYING? They PRAYED, but they struggled. Still, God provided an answer that was difficult for them to believe. Can we relate?
With each PRAYER we pray and see the hand of God working, let our belief be encouraged all the more. I believe we PRAY because we believe in the One to Whom we are PRAYING even when we may wonder about the outcome. Perhaps part of our PRAYER should be, “Lord, I believe! HELP MY UNBELIEF! Help me where I am still struggling to believe.” In this honest, humble, and genuine spirit of seeking God’s help and Will, may our PRAYERS not be simply words or ritual, but rather be sincere conversations with our God of Whom we can BE CONFIDENT He is listening and fully aware of every aspect of our life.
Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR HIS LISTENING EAR!

Heart Of The Matter!
Serving is a good thing and there are various ways in which we can serve. However, the manner in which we serve is important to consider. During the early years of the growth of Christianity, Paul urged slaves to consider their ATTITUDE OF SERVITUDE by viewing their service not as merely being done to men, but as being done unto the Lord. (Ephesians 6:7) This service was to be done “with a SINCERE HEART” (Ephesians 6:5 ESV) as they recognized themselves as being “servants of Christ doing the will of God FROM THE HEART.” (Ephesians 6:6 ESV) Half-hearted service usually does not produce very good results. It also can make the tasks being performed to feel as a drudgery. ATTITUDE OF SERVITUDE not only impacts the manner in which one serves, but also the disposition that accompanies the service being performed.
This attitude is also important to consider in our focus on God and the specific things of which He has called us to be involved. As Joshua was nearing the end of his leadership of the nation of Israel, he called them to consider their ATTITUDE OF SERVITUDE to God.
We read. . .
“(14) Now therefore FEAR THE LORD and SERVE HIM IN SINCERITY AND IN FAITHFULNESS. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and SERVE THE LORD. (15) And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD.” (Joshua 24:14-15 ESV)
It was decision time and Joshua had made his! Were the people ready to make theirs? Have we made ours? That decision will ultimately be reflected in the manner in which we serve the purposes of God. Are we also focused to serve God in SINCERITY AND FAITHFULNESS? God is well aware of the heart we bring to the tasks we perform. To serve God in SINCERITY is to possess a genuine desire to serve and fulfill His purposes. To serve God in FAITHFULNESS is to be true to His calling and plan rather than serving our own desires and plans.
We should remember it is possible to be involved in good works without actually serving the Lord’s Will. (note Matthew 7:21-23) May our service to God and others be clearly marked by a SINCERE AND FAITHFUL HEART that has surrendered to the quest of ultimately pleasing God and glorifying Him as He fulfills His great work through us. In all things let it truly be the Lord we are serving!
Have a great day WITH HEART HUMBLED FOR GOD HONORED SERVICE!

Believing!
Believing is important. Without believing we cannot be saved. (Mark 16:16; Romans 10:10; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2) However, what the believing BRINGS OUT IN OUR LIFE is also of supreme importance. James noted that “Even the demons believe -- and shudder!” (James 2:19) He also made it clear that faith and works go hand in hand (James 2:18-25) and that without those works faith is dead. (James 2:26) So, what is our belief DOING FOR US?
As Jesus’ earthly ministry progressed, belief began to grow among the people. This greatly distressed much of the leadership of the day. Still, even some of the “authorities” began to believe. However, what did that belief CAUSE THEM TO DO?
We read. . .
“(42) Nevertheless, MANY EVEN OF THE AUTHORITIES BELIEVED IN HIM, BUT FOR FEAR OF THE PHARISEES THEY DID NOT CONFESS IT, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; (43) for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.” (John 12:42-43 ESV)
See where the primary focus was? Even though they believed, see what they did not want to lose? Despite the fact they believed, their love for acceptance by others was greater than their love for acknowledging the Lord.
Note the contrast in the following passage:
“(18) So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. (19) But Peter and John answered them, ’Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, (20) FOR WE CANNOT BUT SPEAK OF WHAT WE HAVE SEEN AND HEARD.’” (Acts 4:18-20 ESV)
The “authorities” mentioned above, as well as Peter and John, had “seen and heard” the works and teaching of Jesus. Nevertheless, they did not respond to the belief in the same manner. In the first case these believers STOPPED SHORT of public acknowledgment. Peter and John, on the other hand, even in the face of punishment could NOT BE STOPPED from speaking! In both cases believing took place, but these “authorities” appear to have -- as Paul mentioned as being possible in his letter to the church at Corinth -- “believed in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:2 ESV)
Jesus promised and warned. . .
“(32) So EVERYONE WHO ACKNOWLEDGES ME before men, I ALSO WILL ACKNOWLEDGE before my Father who is in heaven, (33) but WHOEVER DENIES ME before men, I ALSO WILL DENY before my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33 ESV)
That sounds fair enough, does it not? Let us recognize how our believing is to move us into ACTION OF WORD AND DEED. May our belief in Jesus as the Son of God and the Savior of our soul well up from deep within us so that we too CANNOT HELP BUT SPEAK of the difference He has brought to our life and desires to bring to others as well.
Have a great day SUSTAINED BY AN UNSTOPPABLE BELIEF!

Solution And Problem!
Those of you who are teens have perhaps begun giving consideration to the occupation you desire to someday have. Whatever that might be may be focused on as something you see as being worthwhile, would be enjoyable, and even makes good economic sense. Your studies now and the kind of discipline you are presently developing are the foundation upon which your future expectations will rest. Therefore, be very mindful of how you are handling what is presently within your hands. Though providing a good living is a noble quest and more WEALTH is often viewed as a solution to many problems, it must also be noted that WEALTH can in itself become the problem.
During a period of Israel’s unfaithfulness to God we read. . .
“(19) They cast THEIR SILVER into the streets, and THEIR GOLD is like an unclean thing. THEIR SILVER AND GOLD are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. FOR IT WAS THE STUMBLING BLOCK OF THEIR INIQUITY. (20) His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore I make it an unclean thing to them.” (Ezekiel 7:17-19 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, “for THEIR LOVE OF MONEY MADE THEM STUMBLE INTO SIN.”
Their WEALTH was not a solution, but rather became a problem. There was pride in their possessions and some of that WEALTH was also used for the making of idols, thus drawing the focus away from the God Who had actually been the One to bless them. That which could have been viewed as a blessing had become the source of their downfall; instead of being life’s solution it became life’s problem.
It is important to retain a balanced perspective that causes us to retain God -- as the Giver of all good gifts -- at the center of life’s focus. When this is not done it is far too easy for the “things” and the WEALTH to become a distraction and hindrance rather than a help.
Agur appears to have wisely understood the challenge when he wrote. . .
“(7) Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die: (8) Remove far from me falsehood and lying; GIVE ME NEITHER POVERTY NOR RICHES; feed me with the food that is needful for me, (9) LEST I BE FULL AND DENY YOU and say, “Who is the LORD?” OR LEST I BE POOR AND STEAL and profane the name of my God.” (Proverbs 30:7-9 ESV)
As we look at life’s solutions, let us be careful they do not become the problem. Loving God and others more than the “things” (note 1 Timothy 6:10) will help us maintain a proper perspective in how we use that with which we have been blessed. (note also 1 Timothy 6:17-19) Let us seek God’s help in finding the greatest value for what we possess so that we may truly be laying up treasure in Heaven (Matthew 6:20) remembering that what we truly consider our treasure is where our heart will be also! (Matthew 6:21) May our greatest WEALTH be in good deeds to the glory of God.
Have a great day NOT LETTING THE GOODS GET IN THE WAY!

Like The Teacher!
One who likes their teacher can easily develop the desire to become like their teacher. There are times when the expressions or mannerisms of a student are such that who their teacher is can be easily identified. There were some characteristics noted about the DISCIPLES of John the Baptist and those of the Pharisees that were viewed in contrast to Jesus’ DISCIPLES. (Luke 5:33) When we think about our own life, is there something distinctive about it that clearly reveals with whom our thinking and actions are aligned?
On an occasion when Jesus was teaching a multitude on a number of subjects we read. . .
“(39) He also told them a parable: ‘Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? (40) A DISCIPLE is not above his teacher, but EVERYONE WHEN HE IS FULLY TRAINED WILL BE LIKE HIS TEACHER.” (Luke 6:39-40 ESV)
By whom are we allowing ourselves to be led? To be led by one whose sight is not very good can either lead us in the wrong direction or “into a pit.” Though we would understand the physical implications of the blind leading the blind, it was how one was being led spiritually that Jesus had in mind. A DISCIPLE -- according to the Greek “mathetes” -- is literally “a learner”, but not just in the sense of simply being a pupil. To be a DISCIPLE was to hold so closely to the practices of the teacher that the pupil became like the teacher. Such is the goal of DISCIPLESHIP. Therefore we must be mindful of who it is we are allowing to DISCIPLE us.
On another occasion we read. . .
“(19) So Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, BUT ONLY WHAT HE SEES THE FATHER DOING. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. (20) For THE FATHER loves the Son and SHOWS HIM ALL THAT HE HIMSELF IS DOING. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.” (John 5:19-20)
What we need is to be taught by the One Who sees as the Father sees. This way we will be led in a proper direction. John recorded three very specific ways Jesus Himself described this DISCIPLESHIP as coming to fruition.
We read. . .
“(31) So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘IF YOU ABIDE IN MY WORD, YOU ARE TRULY MY DISCIPLES, (32) and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” (John 8:31-32 ESV)
