Glorious Day!
As I walk around town and greet people, it is often easy to see how the weather sometimes impacts dispositions. There are times when the gloom of a cloudy or rainy day is seen not only in the face, but also in the step. However, when the sun is shining brightly -- even on a cool winter day -- I seem to see more smiles, more spring in the step, and even hear expressions like “lovely” and “glorious” used to describe the day.
When a new day dawns and the sun begins to rise, does it not tend to bring up the disposition and focus? Following the darkness of night, the light of day seems to bring with it a sense of hope and renewal. Perhaps we view each NEW DAY as a new opportunity to begin afresh. There is a sense in which we should thankfully acknowledge each rising of the sun as being an indication from God that He intends for life in this realm to go on at least for one more day.
When John the Baptist was born, before his role of preaching and preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah began, his father (a priest by the name of Zechariah) prophesied regarding the redemption and salvation God was to bring about. In the last words of Zechariah’s prophesying we read…
“(78) BECAUSE OF THE TENDER MERCY OF OUR GOD, whereby THE SUNRISE SHALL VISIT US FROM ON HIGH (79) to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, TO GUIDE OUR FEET INTO THE WAY OF PEACE.” ( Luke 1:78-79 ESV)
Part of this prophecy was similar to that of Isaiah. ( Isaiah 9:2) Zechariah may have also had in mind the rising “sun of righteousness” mentioned by Malachi. ( Malachi 4:2) Here was the DAWNING OF A NEW ERA! Here was a NEW DAY to be excited about! The coming Messiah -- the One Who would overcome the present darkness -- was soon to rise on life’s scene. (read John 1:1-13)
Jeremiah, in spite of the darkness around him, lifted His gaze to gratefully and jubilantly declare…
“(22) The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; HIS MERCIES NEVER COME TO AN END; (23) THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness. (24) ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’” ( Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)
How much more so should this be our jubilation as we live in the light of the Glorious Son of God! He visited from on High to show us the way to the Father ( John 14:6) and has ascended to prepare a place for us. With the passing of each NEW DAY let us keep looking toward the DAWNING of the eternal realm of light; the land of ENDLESS DAY (note Revelation 21:23-25) in which we will someday live.
Have a great day BASKING IN GLORIOUS SON-LIGHT!
Carl
