Another Day!
I knew when we began this year it was going to be a long one. Perhaps such a statement makes you wonder about my outlook on this year of which we are finishing only the second month. Actually, all it took was a look at the calendar to clue me in to the fact this was going to be a long year wherein we get 366 days rather than the usual 365. That’s a whole extra day! Why are we so blessed? Because this is a leap year; a year consisting of an extra day -- February 29 -- to make up the difference between the 365 day calendar and the actual duration of the Earth’s orbiting of the Sun. Every four years -- except for years ending in 00 that are not divisible by 400 -- we get this special day added. How wonderful!
The attempts of past eras in adjusting the calendar to match the time of the earth’s orbiting the sun and the seasonal periods together, only reflects mankind’s difficulty with time. How often have we wished for an extra day? With so much to do, who wouldn’t appreciate some extra time now and then. Since today is an extra day compared to other years, how are we going to use it? How should we view and use every day? Do we seek to glorify God with every day He provides?
The Hebrew writer urged…
“(12) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But EXHORT ONE ANOTHER EVERY DAY, AS LONG AS IT IS CALLED ‘TODAY,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. (14) For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” (Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV)
For some their philosophy of life is: “Another day, another dollar.” Should it not rather be: “Another day, another opportunity to glorify God and encourage others to draw near to Him.”? Every day is an extra gift from God Who supplies life a day at a time. Each day ought to be approached from the standpoint that “…If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that” (James 4:15 ESV) because when it comes to time we can only use it as God brings it.
Have a great day APPRECIATING EACH EXTRA DAY GOD ADDS TO LIFE!

What In The World...!
Sometimes a parent walks into their child’s room and in shock exclaims, “What in the world are you doing?” Perhaps what is being done is being carried out on purpose, but with no real purpose. There are also times when a parent may ask, “What in the world were you thinking?” When the child responds, “I didn’t think…”, the parent may then break in with, “Well maybe you should!”
“What in the world ARE YOU DOING?” Is this not a very reasonable question for our own life? What marks our activity in this realm? Are we simply living or are we focused on a greater sense of purpose in living?
On one occasion Jesus said to His disciples…
“(4) WE MUST WORK THE WORKS OF HIM WHO SENT ME WHILE IT IS DAY; night is coming, when no one can work. (5) AS LONG AS I AM IN THE WORLD, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:4-5 ESV)
While in this world there was specific work to be done and Jesus retained a focus on being at this work. Though it took time for the disciples to understand the full extent and purpose of this work, He made the work clear to the disciples as he prepared them to carry on God’s work once He had ascended on high.
Note how this was reflected in Paul’s life even as he wrote from prison.
“(21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) If I am TO LIVE IN THE FLESH, THAT MEANS FRUITFUL LABOR for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. (24) But TO REMAIN IN THE FLESH IS MORE NECESSARY ON YOUR ACCOUNT. (25) Convinced of this, I know that I WILL REMAIN and continue with you all, FOR YOUR PROGRESS AND JOY IN THE FAITH, (26) so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again.” (Philippians 1:21-26 ESV)
As followers of Jesus Christ, “what in the world” we are to be doing among other things is to BE LIGHT (Matthew 5:14; Philippians 2:15) in this dark world. We do this by LIVING GOOD AND HONORABLE LIVES (1 Peter 2:12) to the end that God will be ultimately glorified. Like Jesus, our LIFE IN THIS WORLD is to be lived for God and for others!
May we keep in mind “what in the world” we ought TO BE DOING that rather than shock at our living, God will be pleased that we are living aware of His purposes for being in this world. Let us keep our thinking centered on what He has both called us to be and do!
Have a great day LIVING LIFE ON GOD’S PURPOSE!

The Star!
Imagine sitting in a theater to watch a film telling the story of your life and on the big screen you saw the words, “This Is Your Life”, Starring _________ !” Who would be the star? Well, it's your life, right? Or is it really you that is the MAIN CHARACTER in the story of your life or me of mine?
Remember the parable Jesus told of the rich fool. Here was one who most definitely had self on center stage in his life. (Luke 12:16-19) Also consider the life of a man known as Saul of Tarsus. (Acts 9:11) Though he was a religious man (Acts 22:3; 23:6), his zeal was taking him the wrong direction. (Acts 8:3; 22:4-5) Being the proud star of the story of his life, he focused on a rich fleshly heritage (Philippians 3:4-5), but eventually realized he could not depend on a righteousness of his own, but rather one made possible by JESUS CHRIST. (Philippians 3:9)
Sometimes actors will go by a stage name in order to allow them to have some privacy away from the stage. Saul had a name change, but as Paul he did not take the LEADING ROLE. Paul learned something about setting self aside and allowing another to become the MAIN CHARACTER of his life.
In his letter to the church at Philippi we read…
“(20) as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as ALWAYS CHRIST WILL BE HONORED in my body, whether by life or by death. (21) For TO ME TO LIVE IS CHRIST, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:20-21 ESV)
CHRIST became the CENTRAL CHARACTER in the story of Paul’s life! In his letter to the church at Galatia he pointed out that he had been “CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST” and that it was no longer he himself who was living, but CHRIST LIVING IN HIM! (Galatians 2:19-20) JESUS CHRIST was the MAIN CHARACTER of Paul’s life and also his message. (1 Corinthians 1:22-23)
What about us? As Christians, who is truly the MAIN CHARACTER of our life story? Has it become CHRIST? Or is self getting in the way?
Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul pointed to how our life should be seen.
“(1) If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. (2) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (3) For YOU HAVE DIED, and YOUR LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD. (4) When CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4 ESV)
If we have died to self, self is no longer in the forefront; self no longer has the leading role. Perhaps we could view self as the understudy of the one who does have the lead part. Paul said our life is to be seen as “HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD.” If that is so, then it is CHRIST and GOD Who are to be seen as having the LEAD ROLE in our life story. In essence the story of our life is to be pictured as CHRIST BEING OUR LIFE! Praise God that such a STAR was born, gave His life for our sins, was raised to life and has ascended on high.
Have a great day LETTING CHRIST REMAIN OUR LIFE STORIES’ MAIN CHARACTER!

Don't Be A Target!
Did you know that this year the decision was made to remove the word “gullible” from the dictionary? We may laugh about having a joke pulled over on us, but there are some areas of life where being fooled is no laughing matter.
Consider the following. Michel Chasles, the famous 19th century French mathematician and Sorbonne professor was tricked into buying a total of 27,340 letters for $30,000. These letters were alleged to have been written by the resurrected Lazarus to Peter, from Mary Magdalene to a Burgundian King, and a Gallic doctor to Jesus Christ. The surprise was the letters were all written in modern French and on contemporary paper. [original source unknown]
It seems that as many people as there are out to dupe others, there are also as many open to being duped. Not only did Paul warn of such, but our Lord did as well.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Thessalonica, he wrote…
“(1) Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, (2) NOT TO BE QUICKLY SHAKEN IN MIND OR ALARMED, either BY a spirit or a spoken word, or A LETTER SEEMING TO BE FROM US, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.” (2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 ESV)
It appears that ever since the first century there have been those who either wrongly predicted or falsely claimed the Lord’s second coming. Should it be any surprise there are such deceivers even today? Thank God the Scriptures record the truth and warnings so that we do NOT HAVE TO BECOME A VICTIM to such deception.
Jesus warned His disciples…
“(5) For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.” (Matthew 24:5 ESV)
Then dropping down to verse 23 we continue reading…
“(23) Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ DO NOT BELIEVE IT. (24) For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. (25) See, I have told you beforehand. (26) So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ DO NOT GO OUT. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ DO NOT BELIEVE IT. (27) For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:23-27 ESV) [Also Luke 17:22-25]
Along with Jesus’ warning He made it clear that when He comes it will be something that won’t be missed. Also, when it comes to the predicting of His return He made something about that crystal clear as well.
Again we read His warning…
“But CONCERNING THAT DAY AND HOUR NO ONE KNOWS, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” (Matthew 24:36 ESV)
I was recently asked by an individual some questions about being in the last days. When I referred to this statement of Jesus, she asked, “Not even the angels?” That’s what Jesus said! Even so, today I hear of individuals making such claims stating they were told by an angel.
Since we do not know the when, we must ALWAYS LIVE PREPARED for when the time does come. It may be another thousand years, but let us not put off preparation because it could just as well be tomorrow or today! Each passing day is only a sign of God’s patience in offering another opportunity for repentance and acceptance. (read 2 Peter 3:9-10) Therefore, as Peter went on to state, let us be mindful of what sort of people we ought to be, living holy and godly lives (2 Peter 3:11), ever prepared for when God decides the time has come.
Have a great day DISTINGUISHING THE TRUTH THAT KEEPS LIFE ON TARGET!

Wheel Or Spare?
How many wheels does a car have? Perhaps someone might say four in reference to those on which the vehicle rolls while another might remember the spare and so declare there are five. However, let us also remember the steering wheel used for maneuvering and changing the direction of the vehicle. It would therefore be correct to say a car has six wheels.
It has been said that “our religion should be a steering wheel, not a spare tire.”
Is belief in God merely something we fall back on, or is it what truly directs our life? How many only think about God and His way when their life goes flat and they need a fix? Could the very reason they keep getting flats be due to continuing to go down the wrong roads? If we truly believe in God we should TRUST HIS DIRECTION, allowing it TO STEER OUR LIFE on a proper course. To know Him is to accept His Word and Will for our life.
John wrote:
“(4) Whoever says ‘I KNOW HIM’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (5) but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: (6) whoever says he abides in him OUGHT TO WALK IN THE SAME WAY IN WHICH HE WALKED.” (1 John 2:4-6 ESV)
May we continually seek for our life to follow the manner in which our Lord walked upon earth. As the Sovereign Will of the Father set the course of that walk, may we allow it to do the same for us. With the Will of God steering our life we can be assured of safely arriving at our heavenly destination.
Have a great day WITH GOD’S WILL BEHIND THE WHEEL OF OUR LIFE!

A Compelling Power!
Yesterday, while on my usual Saturday morning walk, as I was beginning my twelfth mile I began to feel hungry. By then I had probably pretty much burned up my breakfast calories. Then, into my fifteenth mile I was really beginning to feel hungry and was glad I was heading toward home. In fact, my pace may have picked up a little bit more to get me there. In a sense I was HUNGERING FOR HOME.
This hunger as I walked brought to mind Jesus’ parable of the lost son. (Luke 15:11-32) He had left home to go do his own thing which apparently went well until there was a famine in the land. (vs.14) It seems to have taken that famine and to be among pigs having better fare than he (verse 16) to recognize there was really a famine in his own life. It was then that his thoughts turned toward home and the HUNGERING FOR HOME began.
We read…
“(17) But when HE CAME TO HIMSELF, he said, ‘HOW MANY OF MY FATHER’S HIRED SERVANTS HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH BREAD, BUT I PERISH HERE WITH HUNGER! (18) I WILL ARISE AND GO TO MY FATHER, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. (19) I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.’” (Luke 15:17-19 ESV)
And so he arose and headed home. Though a child of the father he was willing to be taken back as a hired servant. How ever he would be received, he would be happy to be home. Had he not been receptive to the hunger pains he might have remained the lost son. The wonderful part of the story is the picture of a father (the picture of our Heavenly Father) eager to welcome him home. (verses 20-24)
Jesus encouraged…
“Blessed are those who HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, for THEY SHALL BE SATISFIED.” (Matthew 5:6 ESV)
Hunger for other things can get us into trouble. However, when we realize how empty what we are feeding on really is, the renewal of a HUNGER FOR HOME can powerfully compel us to return. That HUNGER FOR HOME can also keep us there when we maintain due appreciation for what our Heavenly Father lovingly provides for His family.
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE FATHER’S FLAVORFUL FARE!

Glorious Day!
As I walk around town and greet people, it is often easy to see how the weather sometimes impacts dispositions. There are times when the gloom of a cloudy or rainy day is seen not only in the face, but also in the step. However, when the sun is shining brightly -- even on a cool winter day -- I seem to see more smiles, more spring in the step, and even hear expressions like “lovely” and “glorious” used to describe the day.
When a new day dawns and the sun begins to rise, does it not tend to bring up the disposition and focus? Following the darkness of night, the light of day seems to bring with it a sense of hope and renewal. Perhaps we view each NEW DAY as a new opportunity to begin afresh. There is a sense in which we should thankfully acknowledge each rising of the sun as being an indication from God that He intends for life in this realm to go on at least for one more day.
When John the Baptist was born, before his role of preaching and preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah began, his father (a priest by the name of Zechariah) prophesied regarding the redemption and salvation God was to bring about. In the last words of Zechariah’s prophesying we read…
“(78) BECAUSE OF THE TENDER MERCY OF OUR GOD, whereby THE SUNRISE SHALL VISIT US FROM ON HIGH (79) to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, TO GUIDE OUR FEET INTO THE WAY OF PEACE.” (Luke 1:78-79 ESV)
Part of this prophecy was similar to that of Isaiah. (Isaiah 9:2) Zechariah may have also had in mind the rising “sun of righteousness” mentioned by Malachi. (Malachi 4:2) Here was the DAWNING OF A NEW ERA! Here was a NEW DAY to be excited about! The coming Messiah -- the One Who would overcome the present darkness -- was soon to rise on life’s scene. (read John 1:1-13)
Jeremiah, in spite of the darkness around him, lifted His gaze to gratefully and jubilantly declare…
“(22) The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; HIS MERCIES NEVER COME TO AN END; (23) THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness. (24) ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’” (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)
How much more so should this be our jubilation as we live in the light of the Glorious Son of God! He visited from on High to show us the way to the Father (John 14:6) and has ascended to prepare a place for us. With the passing of each NEW DAY let us keep looking toward the DAWNING of the eternal realm of light; the land of ENDLESS DAY (note Revelation 21:23-25) in which we will someday live.
Have a great day BASKING IN GLORIOUS SON-LIGHT!

Careful What Wish For!
I remember hearing of a child who at every meal would cry that they wanted ice-cream. Finally the parents gave in and told the child ice-cream was what they would get. It was served for breakfast. It was served for lunch. It was served for dinner. It was not long, however, before the child began to cry for regular meals. Perhaps we are not surprised when we hear of childish tantrums and smile at the clever ways parents find to deal with them.
What about our own desires? Could we also be guilty of such childish behavior? We may look at our lives and think of many things we either would like to have or feel we need. However, what would become of our life if we really got all we thought we wanted? Would our life be better? Or is there something else to keep in mind that would bring about the best?
Reading through Exodus and Numbers we might be struck by how often the nation of Israel whined and complained to Moses. It may also amaze us how many times Moses was willing to plead on behalf of the people when God was ready to destroy them and make Moses a nation stronger and mightier than they. (i.e. Numbers 14:11-19) When “the rabble” (Numbers 11:4) among the people had a strong craving for meat and wished for the fish and other foods they had eaten in Egypt, feeling they had had enough manna (Numbers 11:5-6), God decided to give them what they wanted. God was not going to provide the quail for only one day, or even two, five, ten, or twenty days. The people were going to get their fill for a whole month, until (as God put it) it came out their noses and became loathsome to them. (Numbers 11:19-20)
Noting again the passage we considered yesterday when Israel became afraid to journey into the land God had promised to give them, we read…
“(1) Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. (2) And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, ‘Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! OR WOULD THAT WE HAD DIED IN THIS WILDERNESS! (3) Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?’ (4) And they said to one another, ‘Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.’” (Numbers 14:1-4 ESV)
They had left the bondage of Egypt, but were still in the wilderness. Was it the better thing? Here they were so close to receiving what God had promised and yet deciding it was better not to enter. Better than moving forward was dying in the wilderness or choosing another leader to take them back to Egypt. Unfortunately, because of their rebellion and LACK OF TRUST IN GOD, part of what they stated as having been better, would be exactly what they would then experience. Those presently twenty years and older would not be allowed to enter the promised land, but would in fact die in that wilderness during the next 40 years of wandering. (Numbers 14:28-29) However, Caleb and Joshua -- because of their faithfulness and TRUST IN GOD -- would be allowed to enter. (Numbers 14:30)
We too should be careful what it is for which we wish because we just might get it and in the process miss out on the greater things God may have in mind! Whatever we might want or think we need, we ought to TRUST IN WHAT GOD WILLS for our life. (note Ephesians 3:20) Do we not believe that He is able to provide what is adequate and truly best? Perhaps we know that intellectually, but we ought to live in a way that actively demonstrates such TRUST IN HIS WILL. May we, like Paul (note Philippians 4:11-13), learn contentment in the wise provision of God.
Have a great day TRUSTING WHAT GOD WISHES TO PROVIDE!

Protection From Falling Prey!
Often people fall PREY TO FEARS of things that may never happen or live with a fear that creates the atmosphere for the very things feared to actually come about. When times are difficult people can often be filled with many fears. In President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s First Inaugural Address (March 4, 1933) which was given as the United States had just entered the Depression, he stated one of his most often quoted phrases: “First of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” [source: “Great Quotations”, by W. J. Federer, © 2001] Fear can have a paralyzing impact. It can also cause irrational thinking and behavior. Therefore, where we maintain our focus and what we keep in remembrance is of extreme importance.
When Moses sent the spies in to look over the promised land and return with a report, he gave them some specific instructions. (Numbers 13:17-20) With those instructions Moses exhorted the twelve spies to “BE OF GOOD COURAGE.” (Numbers 13:20) However, ten of the spies came back having obeyed every command but that one (note Numbers 13:28), and the people became greatly discouraged. Though Caleb and Joshua continued their attempts to redirect the focus back toward TRUST IN GOD (Numbers 13:30; 14:6-9) the others continued to offer words of discouragement. (Numbers 13:31-33)
In response to the discouraging reports we read…
“(1) Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. (2) And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, ‘Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! (3) Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones WILL BECOME A PREY. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?’ (4) And they said to one another,‘Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.’” (Numbers 14:1-4 ESV)
Not only was this rebellion against the leadership of Moses and Aaron, but ultimately against God. Where was the TRUST “in spite of all the signs that [God] had done among them?” (Numbers 14:11) What need did they have He did not fulfill? What deliverance did He not provide when needed? Was there anything God had revealed Himself incapable of doing? What impact should such have had on their focus? Still, the harder Caleb and Joshua tried to encourage the people the stronger their resistance, even to the point of being ready to stone these two men of faith. (Numbers 14:10) Instead of seeing themselves or their families as becoming “PREY”, they should have knelt down and begun to “PRAY”! Instead of deciding to put their trust in some other leader, they should have remembered how God had been with them all along the way and retained their TRUST IN HIM.
Peter encouraged…
“(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (7) CASTING ALL YOUR ANXIETIES ON HIM, BECAUSE HE CARES FOR YOU.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV)
When things may appear difficult in comparison to ourselves, let us remember they are nothing compared to God! Stopping for a moment to PRAY redirects our focus back to the One Who sees beyond what we can. A PRAYERFUL focus can also bring to remembrance what God has done in the past and what He has promised for the future. We too have a promised land to which we are journeying. Let us not give up in the midst of life’s challenges, but rather keep our TRUST IN HIM to carry us through to the eternal home prepared for those who are His.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A PRAYERFUL FOCUS!

Life's Education!
The noted statesman Sir Winston Churchill (who lived from 1874-1965 and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951-1955) is quoted as saying, “Personally I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.” Can we relate? Not all of life’s lessons are easy. However, should we not be EAGERLY READY when we have the opportunity to learn something and rejoice when we recognize we have? Though some needed lessons may hurt at first -- and we might even wish we had just known them without having to have been taught -- the thing for which to be thankful is the fact we can move ahead from where we are, being wiser for them.
Solomon stated…
“THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7 ESV)
Rightfully acknowledging God and the authority of His Will is where knowledge begins, because then we know with what to make our comparisons. It is foolish both to not want to learn or to think there isn’t more that can be learned. Therefore, let us strive to always be EAGERLY READY to accept what will make us wiser for living God glorifying and productive lives.

The Family!
[02/19/2008 “teEn-MAIL”]
THE FAMILY!
For the past several Sunday evenings I have been leading some discussion centering on ways in which to engage others in conversation that moves from merely commenting on the weather to spiritual matters. Among the techniques we have noted the last two Sundays is the use of questions. What is it that questions do? Actually a number of things. Questions get people to think. Questions draw out what others know in order to take them further in their understanding. Questions sometimes expose common ground. Questions can turn the tables or redirect the focus of others. Questions can spark curiosity and thus develop interest in further discussion. Etc.
Looking through the Gospels, Jesus -- Whom we may acknowledge as the Master Teacher -- was a master at using questions. Perhaps you would find it interesting to read through one of the Gospels paying close attention to the questions Jesus asked and consider why He might have asked them and how it impacted those to whom they were directed.
On one occasion when Jesus was teaching in a house, his mother and brothers came looking for Him, but were unable to get in due to the crowd. They conveyed through another individual that they wanted to speak to Him and Jesus’ response began with a question.
We read…
“But he replied to the man who told him, ‘WHO IS MY MOTHER, AND WHO ARE MY BROTHERS?’” (Matthew 12:48 ESV)
Jesus’ question was such as would have directed the mind to consider where life’s closest bonds are truly found. Each one present would have known who their mother and father and brothers and sisters and other relations were. They would have logically understood Jesus knew who His were as well. I imagine this question caught their attention with perhaps wondering where this Master Teacher was going with such a line of thought.
There are “brotherhoods” (and sisterhoods) and considerations of a sense of family in various spheres of society. We find such mentioned among firefighters, police officers, civic organizations, etc. Though these relationships are not blood relationships there is a strong sense of camaraderie and a kindred spirit that creates a close bond between them. However, Jesus’ focus turned toward the SPIRITUAL KINSHIP that joins us together now and transcends this realm.
Jesus went on to answer His own question by stating…
“(49) And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! (50) For WHOEVER DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN IS MY BROTHER AND SISTER AND MOTHER.’” (Matthew 12:49-50 ESV)
Though physical family relationships are precious and have responsibilities associated with them that are not to be neglected (Mark 7:9-13; 1 Timothy 5:8), Jesus noted this SPIRITUAL KINSHIP as holding even greater significance. Just as those within a physical family share certain likenesses (looks and mannerisms), there is even something visible that can be noted among those sharing the SPIRITUAL KINSHIP within God’s family; the doing of His Will! I pray each one of us is experiencing the preciousness of this relationship we have through the Lord that encompasses both Heaven and earth.
Have a great day BEARING THE FAMILY TRAIT OF DOING GOD’S WILL!

With And In Spite Of!
Sometimes we have choices between things and it is one or the other. Other times we may have no choice, but are left to simply accept things as they come. However, it is also possible that two things may come that would seem to detract from each other, but blessing is a part of the experience anyway. It can be one with the other!
As Peter began his first letter, he stated his desire for those to whom he wrote that “GRACE AND PEACE be multiplied to” them. (1 Peter 1:2) GRACE AND PEACE are certainly wonderful experiences of life. Oh, to have such in abundance as we go from day to day. However, as Peter’s letter continued he told his readers to “not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you” as if it was something strange. (1 Peter 4:12) In other words, in the walk in Christ there was testing they could anticipate. Would that not mean the loss of PEACE? Peter also went on to urge them to rejoice in this connection with Christ. (1 Peter 4:13)
On the one hand Peter stated his desire for them to experience PEACE and then he pointed to the expectation of what might be seen as a lack of it. Is it one or the other or is there a sense in which both can be the experience at the same time? Perhaps that depends on our view of the source of GRACE AND PEACE. Is not God the source of GRACE through Jesus Christ? Is that not also where PEACE is found even when things around us may not be peaceful? That appears to be the encouragement Jesus offered Peter and the rest of the disciples prior to His arrest and crucifixion.
As Jesus warned of the events to come He stated…
“I have said these things to you, that IN ME YOU MAY HAVE PEACE. IN THE WORLD YOU WILL HAVE TRIBULATION. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ESV)
PEACE AND TRIBULATION! PEACE AND TRIALS! Both would be their experience because of their focus on Jesus. However, as they went through the challenges to their faith, it would only be through continuing to focus on Jesus that PEACE would be retained. It was this same focus of TRUSTING FAITH Jesus modeled for us and to which Peter pointed his readers toward.
Back to Peter’s letter we read…
“(21) For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. (22) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. (23) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, BUT CONTINUED ENTRUSTING HIMSELF TO HIM WHO JUDGES JUSTLY.” (1 Peter 2:21-23 ESV)
PEACE in spite of persecution. PEACE from a sense of calming relief gained through TRUSTINGLY leaving it in the hands of another; to God Who is all powerful and ultimately has all under His control. This is the blessing when keeping the life focus where it needs to be. Let us ENTRUST our life and its concerns to the hands of God so that even with and in spite of life’s challenges we may continue to experience the PEACE OF GOD that surpasses all understanding. (Philippians 4:7) It is one of His precious blessings for even this life!
Have a great day WITH GOD’S PEACE GUARDING OUR HEARTS AND MINDS IN CHRIST!

A Different People!
As Christians we should be seen as being good people. However, it is possible to live a good life and do good things without being a Christian. Being a Christian by definition is to be identified with Christ. There is to be a focus on the genuineness of that relationship and actions that are truly in accordance with God’s Will. (note Matthew 7:21-23) In our goodness as followers of Jesus, to what extent are we different than the world?
A minister once asked the members of his congregation the following question: “What have you done today that nobody but a Christian would do?” Certainly something to think about, isn’t it? How would we answer the question? Has our becoming Christians moved us to act BEYOND a mere sense of moral goodness?
The challenge Jesus placed before His listeners was…
“…WHAT MORE ARE YOU DOING THAN OTHERS?” (Matthew 5:47b ESV)
Some of the courtesies or niceties Jesus noted on this occasion are practiced by those who do not even believe in Him nor acknowledge God. As we look at our own individual life is there something of exceeding measure that can be noted that is different from the world? Is there a further distance we are willing to go on behalf of others because of our relationship to Christ? Is there service we are willing to offer or people we are willing to reach out to that are usually ignored by the world in general? Is there something uncommon or extraordinary marking some of our life activity?
“What have I done today that nobody but a Christian would do?” A question worthy of meditation and reflection! Since we know more about God and His Will than those in the world, should that not in itself imply a DOING MORE than the world? Perhaps the most impacting action we can exercise is that of extending good when evil has been extended toward us. (Romans 12:17 & 21) This is often quite different than the world -- being most uncommon among those who are not Christians -- and is a graciousness we have come to know through the forgiveness and patience we have experienced from our Heavenly Father. It is also action that holds great potential for winning others over and drawing them toward God. May our relationship to Christ compel us toward the extraordinary as His power and Will work in and through us as His servants.
Have a great day EXCELLING IN CHRISTIAN SERVICE!

On Good Authority!
“I have it on good authority….” Sometimes information is shared with such an introduction. This preface to the information being conveyed is intended to declare what is being said can be accepted as true. However, sometimes that “good authority” is not so good. There are times when some of the facts may have been misconstrued or misinterpreted somewhere along the way either intentionally or by accident. It is highly possible for erroneous statements to sound good and be easily accepted if we are not familiar with the foundation on which they may rest.
What is the authority upon that which we accept based? Paul warned of those who would surround themselves with teachers who would teach what their “itching ears” desired to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3) Even today there are people who purposely seek out those who merely teach what they desire. However, there are others who may be easily misled simply because what they hear sounds good and reasonable even though it may not be completely based on the authority of the Scriptures.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he wrote…
“(1) For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, (2) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of FULL ASSURANCE OF UNDERSTANDING and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, (3) in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (4) I SAY THIS IN ORDER THAT NO ONE MAY DELUDE YOU WITH PLAUSIBLE ARGUMENTS.” (Colossians 2:1-4 ESV)
Though some may deliberately seek out what they want to hear, others may simply be led astray by what sounds good and plausible. This may come at the hands of one who is not necessarily seeking to deceive, but may themselves have a misunderstanding of the Scriptures. Even the Bible refers to sincere individuals possessing knowledge of the truth who still had to have some greater clarity brought to them. (Acts 18:24-26; 19:1-6) Those who checked out the message of even the Apostle Paul to make certain it was based on the truth of the Scriptures were commended for doing so. (Acts 17:11) It is a safeguard for each one of us to make sure what we accept as truth is based on the foundation of what God has revealed through HIS WORD, the Bible.
This is why every time I welcome new subscribers to “teEn-MAIL” I urge them to allow GOD’S WORD to be the authority and last word on every subject. It is not what I say, but what God has declared through HIS WORD that matters most. I know as a teacher I fall under greater judgment. (James 3:1) For this reason I often note more Scripture references in these daily focuses than are completely quoted so the foundation of GOD’S WORD will be noted and ultimately searched out. I am merely a man who is subject to fallibility in his thinking, but GOD’S WORD is the authority and truth to always be accepted. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21) Praise God that though many attempts through the centuries have been made to destroy the Bible, God has preserved HIS WORD so that we too -- like the Bereans -- can check the Scriptures daily to make sure what we are being taught is true. (Acts 17:11)
I am encouraged by the continued growing interest of so many from around the world in receiving these daily focuses. However, as I strive to help you recognize the relevancy of GOD’S WORD even for today, my ultimate desire is to direct you deeper into the truths of HIS WORD. May my words instruct and encourage, but let GOD’S WORD be your authority and ultimate guide for life! That is the truly good authority!
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING GOD’S AUTHORITY FOR ALL OF LIFE!

Essence Of Living!
How might our life be pictured if we had the money to live anyway and anywhere we wanted? For someone to look at us and say, “They’re living the life”, what would that look like? Being served? Being pampered? A life of ease? Would that really be “THE LIFE!”? Would we truly find joy in such living?
Someone has said, “To love and to labor is the sum of life; and yet, how many think they are living who neither love nor labor!” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie] I recently heard someone express the similar concept very simply with the words: “You’re not living if you’re not giving!” That statement was actually made by someone who had lost much through fire and then theft, and yet were still trying to maintain a focus on helping others. The opposite of GIVING LIVING would be what is called a “leach” or a “parasite” that sustains its life only through drawing from the life of others.
What really marks a GENEROUS spirit? Is it solely linked to having much to give? I don’t believe so! I see true GENEROSITY as really being measured by what we are doing with what we have presently rather than what we think we’d do if we had more. Is that not the principle reflected in Jesus’ compliment of the widow who gave her last two coins in contrast with those who were giving out of their abundance? (Mark 12:41-44 & Luke 21:1-4) Jesus noted her as being more GENEROUS than all the others! (Mark 12:43)
In his first letter to Timothy (who was in Ephesus, a city of wealth which probably meant there were a number of wealthy individuals in the church there) Paul urged him to exhort the rich toward GENEROUS LIVING!
We read…
“(17) As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. (18) They are to DO GOOD, to be RICH IN GOOD WORKS, to be GENEROUS AND READY TO SHARE, (19) thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they MAY TAKE HOLD OF THAT WHICH IS TRULY LIFE.” (1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV)
GENEROUS LIVING! GIVING LIVING! Living that leads toward the taking hold of that which is life indeed!
“Not living if not giving!” Perhaps Jesus could have said those words. He certainly exemplified the concept in His walk on earth. (Matthew 20:28 & Mark 10:45) Do they sound like words that could have come from the mouth of Paul? His life too was marked by a centered focus on what He was willingly striving to do for others. (note 2 Corinthians 12:15 & Philippians 1:22-25) Wherever we are may it be the picture of our life as well!
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE WEALTH THAT BRINGS LASTING JOY!

What It's All About!
Today is marked on the calendar as “Valentine’s Day” and is often celebrated by the GIVING of special tokens of affection. School children exchange cards in classes. Husbands may bring home flowers and chocolates for their sweetheart and wives may provide a special dinner for the love of their life. Those dating may also GIVE valentine cards and gifts to each other. All of this is done in the name of love! This is what love is all about; GIVING! If it is about taking it is not really love, but rather selfishness or perhaps even emotional extortion.
Jesus said…
“(12) This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (12) GREATER LOVE HAS NO ONE THAN THIS, that someone LAY DOWN HIS LIFE for his friends.” (John 15:12-13 ESV)
Yes, love is a command. It is more than the sentiment of the heart or the tingly feelings we might have for another. Love is the decision of the mind to be GIVING toward another. Viewing love in this sense is the only way loving an enemy can be possible. (note Matthew 5:44)
Jesus here presented Himself as the standard of GIVING love. However, bear in mind Jesus even GAVE His life for His enemies with the desire they would appropriately respond. Laying down one’s life for one’s friends is often viewed as the ultimate sacrifice. Literally GIVING our life may actually be the easy thing to do for those we love because the GIVING is over and done with. Where the rubber meets the road in life is through the ongoing willingness to GIVE and GIVE and GIVE of our time and selves to others. The genuineness of our love is powerfully revealed in this way.
Cards and flowers are actually pretty cheap gifts. Yes, they are nice and the giver’s gift ought to be appreciated. However, let us recognize what true GIVING love is all about and how it is to be exercised on a daily basis. And we can do so in celebration of the great love God has for us because He got the ball rolling by loving us first! (1 John 4:19) May we help the world around us come to understand what real love is truly all about!
Have a great day MAKING LOVING ACTIONS A GIFT OF EVERY DAY!

Retaining The Quality!
As Jesus addressed the concept of the impact and influence we can have in and on the lives of others, among the analogies He used were the characteristics of salt and light. (Matthew 5:13-16) Most often, when I have considered His teaching regarding us being salt, my focus has rested on the various ways in which salt has its usefulness: add flavor, bring healing, preserve, etc. However, is that the only thing to consider from our Lord’s teaching? Perhaps as we have considered the ways in which we are to BE THE SALT of the earth we have overlooked the question Jesus asked.
Jesus exhorted…
“You are the salt of the earth, BUT IF SALT HAS LOST ITS TASTE, HOW SHALL ITS SALTINESS BE RESTORED? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” (Matthew 5:13 ESV)
Not only should we take to heart the various ways in which our spiritual saltiness can influence others, but we need to note Jesus’ question as well. The warning implies the possibility of losing the quality that influences. What good is the life then? What benefit would we be? Could our life not also be described as being “no longer good for anything”? Though salt’s saltiness may not be restored once it is lost, praise God He is able to renew His intended qualities back into our life as we turn to Him in genuine repentance. Nevertheless, we must still take the warning to heart, acknowledging such a point of completely losing our salty influence could be reached if we are not careful. That means we ought to always strive to maintain the qualities of Christianity the Lord has called us to possess so that we may carry on the godly impact and influence this world so desperately needs. Jesus said, “You are the salt.” Let us continue to BE THE SALT to His glory and the benefit of those around us!
Have a great day SUSTAINING OUR SALTY SAVOR!

From And Going!
Where one is from sometimes explains (but does not excuse) some of their habits, mannerisms, and maybe even the way they talk. Where someone is moving might also impact these areas of life as they perhaps prepare themselves for fitting in with those among whom they will live. It is possible for one to allow their environment to bring about a continual shifting of behavior rather than possessing a CONSISTENT ESSENCE OF CHARACTER. I was struck by this thought as I read through a portion of Leviticus yesterday morning.
We read…
“(1) And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, (2) ‘Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the LORD your God. (3) You shall NOT DO AS THEY DO IN THE LAND OF EGYPT, WHERE YOU LIVED, and you shall NOT DO AS THEY DO IN THE LAND OF CANAAN, TO WHICH I AM BRINGING YOU. You shall not walk in their statutes.’” (Leviticus 18:1-3 ESV)
God’s people were warned against involvement in the practices of where they once lived as well as not taking up the practices of those in the land to which God was leading them. Such was not to be the manner in which they walked. The ESSENSE OF THEIR CHARACTER was to be based on something more CONSISTENT than that!
God’s exhortation through Moses continued…
“(4) ‘You shall FOLLOW MY RULES and KEEP MY STATUTES and WALK IN THEM. I am the LORD your God. (5) You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.’” (Leviticus 18:4-5)
It was God’s rules and statutes that were to be followed! Also, three times in the first five verses of this chapter God declared, “I am the LORD.” All along the way it was His Way that was to be observed. The manner in which God’s people were exhorted to live was to be CONSISTENT WITH REFLECTING HIS LORDSHIP over them. Should it not be the same with us regardless of where we have been from, where we are presently living, or where we might be moving?
Perhaps another way to look at this is in terms of what truly marks our origin and destination and what that should mean with regard to the ESSENCE OF OUR CHARACTER right now! Our origin is of God our Creator and our destination is the Heavenly home He has prepared. Is the CONSISTENCY OF THE ESSENCE of our life in accordance with that? It is GOD’S RULES -- even in this present realm regardless of what country in which we might live -- we must constantly bear in mind. May the ever present desire of our life be for God’s Will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven. (Matthew 6:10) The place for that to begin is for it to be the CONSISTENCY within our own individual life!
Have a great day KEEPING GOD’S RELIABLE RULE REFLECTED IN THE LIFE!

The Target!
A number of years ago when going through a hunter safety course, one of the rules we were told to keep in mind was: “Never aim at something you do not intend to shoot.” In other words, we were to always be mindful of what direction the muzzle was aimed and to not play around. Being mindful of our AIM was important to consider for both the sake of accuracy and safety! This is also true with regard to keeping our spiritual life on target!
When AIMING at a target, we may not hit the bulls-eye (the center) very often if at all, but that is where our AIM is to be set! However, when we look at the way some live their life it may appear they think they will hit the target while facing a completely different direction. We need to keep the target in focus and continue shooting. Certainly it may be hit and miss, but at least the AIM is still in the right direction. We will never hit the target if we don’t shoot!
To AIM at the “status quo” (the average or minimum the world might expect) is to AIM too low. Jesus noted such natural inclination when He stated…
“(43) You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’” (Matthew 5:43 ESV)
To AIM at “quid pro quo” (I’ll do for you and you do for me) is also to AIM too low. That is what Jesus noted when he said…
“(46) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?” (Matthew 5:46-47 ESV)
Our life scope is to be lifted higher to the target Jesus pointed toward when He went on to state…
“(48) You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48)
Wow! There is the “bulls-eye”! That is the center of the target toward which we are to keep AIMING! It is the godly action of loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us. (Matthew 5:44) since even God has extended some of His blessings on the evil and the good alike. (Matthew 5:45) Every time we “miss the mark” (Greek “hamartia”, “to sin”) we are to AIM and try again.
As Paul wrote to the church at Corinth he exhorted…
“(9) So whether we are at home or away, WE MAKE IT OUR AIM TO PLEASE HIM. (10) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.” (2 Corinthians 5:9-10 ESV)
Making it “OUR AIM”! The Greek word used by Paul here is “philotimoumetha”, a word that is a compound of “Phileō”, “to love” and the word “timē”, “to honor”, and is used to imply motive, ambition, or striving and aspiring toward something. This is why it has been translated “AIM”. To AIM toward demonstrating the essence of God in our own life is to reveal how much we love to honor Him and His Will! May we keep on shooting with that target in our life’s scope!
Have a great day KEEPING GODLINESS AS THE GOAL FOR LIFE’S ACTIONS!

That's It!
“That’s it! I’ve had it! I quit!” Have you ever said such things? Have you ever felt such emotions regarding a particular situation in life? Even among the best of God’s servants such words have been uttered.
Note what the prophet Elijah said as he was fleeing from King Ahab’s wife.
“(3) Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. (4) But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, ‘IT IS ENOUGH; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.’ (5) And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Arise and eat.’” (1 Kings 19:3-5 ESV)
Elijah was down! He seems to have been struck by an exhaustive sense of depression. Wickedness in Israel was rampant. Here he was, God’s messenger, but who was listening? The king on the throne, Ahab, was the worst of Israel’s history. Ahab’s wife, Jezebel, had a real mean streak that seemed unrelenting. Baal was being worshipped rather than God. Elijah was ready to quit. What could save him from his state of depression. Had he lost faith in God? I think, more than anything, he had lost faith in people. Have we been there?
God sent an angel to encourage Elijah. (vs.5-8) Then God told him to go out and stand on the mountain and the Lord would pass by. (vs.11) The message Elijah eventually received was a reminder he was not alone. There were seven thousand in Israel who had not worshipped Baal. (vs.18)
There are situations, trials of various sorts, which can really get us down. When we feel like we have had enough, we too may need to separate ourselves from the situation for a moment; up on “the mountain” to think things through clearly. There are times we also need to be reminded there are others who are still faithful to God. Spend time with them. Be a part of encouraging each other. Yes, there is much wrong in this world, but not everything and everyone is involved in it. May we keep looking to God for encouragement and strength to keep pressing on in His service.
Have a great day PRESSING ON WITH GOD’S WORK!

A Significant Life To Note! (part 2 of 2)
As we noted yesterday, there are a number of individuals mentioned in the Scriptures of whom we are not given a lot of information. However, the significance of what is mentioned should not be overlooked. We have already noted how Enoch was described as a man who “walked with God” and the significance of that for our own life. Today let us consider an individual we find mentioned in the New Testament.
Have you heard the name Aristarchus. Perhaps you associate him with Paul. If so, you are right. However, what do you know about this man? Is there anything significant about his character from which we can learn? I must admit it was my oldest son -- who preaches in Scappoose, Oregon -- who drew my attention to Aristarchus during a recent phone conversation.
Where do we first meet the man? During a riot in Ephesus. Following the concern raised by a silversmith named Demetrius regarding the loss of revenue from the making of silver shrines of Artemis (Acts 19:23-27) that could occur if the people turned to believe in Jesus, we read…
“(28) When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, ’Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!’ (29) So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, DRAGGING WITH THEM GAIUS AND ARISTARCHUS, Macedonians who were PAUL’S COMPANIONS in travel.” (Acts 19:28-29 ESV)
Perhaps some in such a situation would have looked at Paul and said, “You’re on your own now. I’m going home.” John Mark appears to have done that at one point (Acts 13:13; 15:37-38), though as his faith matured he too became very useful to Paul. (2 Timothy 4:11) What we should note about Aristarchus is how he was WILLING TO BE THERE with and for Paul regardless of the situation. We know this from the other four references the Scriptures make to this man.
Every time we find Aristarchus mentioned, the situation is not necessarily a good one. Nevertheless, HE WAS THERE with Paul, remaining a companion in the work. (Acts 20:4) Aristarchus was with Paul on the ship (Acts 27:2) when they eventually got shipwrecked. He was also a fellow prisoner of Paul’s. (Colossians 4:10; Philemon 24) What an encouragement Aristarchus must have been to Paul in his ministry.
Is this the kind of brother or sister we seek to be to one another? Are we also willing TO BE THERE for others through thick and thin? Is that not the kind of supporters we desire? Connected together in such a way provides stable mutual benefit in retaining a steadfast will to press on in the great work of God. May we seek to cultivate the character of companionship in our own life that we see in God’s servant, Aristarchus. Just REMAINING WITH others is in itself a powerful source of encouragement and strength.
Have a great day CULTIVATING THE CHARACTER OF CHRISTIAN COMARADARIE!

A Significant Life To Note! (part 1 of 2)
There are a number of individuals mentioned in the Scriptures of whom we are not given a lot of information. We are introduced to some of these by very brief references. Some of these names merely appear in genealogical listings of which the tie of significant decadency might be noted. Others are named simply as companions of others. Still, even in the midst of these brief references there are significant characteristics of the lives of these individuals that ought to be taken to heart; ones we could easily overlook if we read too quickly. Today let us note one of these individuals from the Old Testament and -- Lord willing -- we will consider another one from the New Testament tomorrow.
Enoch was a man listed in the genealogy from Adam through Noah; ten generations that spanned what I have figured to be about 2006 years. We know his father’s name was Jared (Genesis 5:18), that Enoch was 65 years old when his son Methuselah was born (Genesis 5:21), and then lived 300 more years after that for a total of 365 years. (Genesis 5:22-23) It was Enoch’s son Methuselah who is noted for being the oldest man who ever lived (969 years, Genesis 5:27), but what was it for which Enoch was noted?
We read…
“Enoch WALKED WITH GOD, and he was not, for God took him.” (Genesis 5:24 ESV)
There is no record of Enoch’s death like there was of everyone else in this genealogical listing. For every other individual listed here, the record ends with the words, “and he died.” That is not the case with Enoch. Though we are not told how, God simply took Enoch from this life. However, the notable thing regarding Enoch’s life is that he WALKED WITH GOD. That statement was also made in verse 22. It is the description of the manner in which Enoch lived his life. That walk with God seems to have gone unbroken from this realm into the eternal one with God.
One who WALKED WITH GOD! Is that not of notable significance? Should that not also be the picture we are striving to have associated with our own life? Though we view the goal of our ultimate destination being a glorious heavenly home, we must bear in mind the journey begins here! To WALK WITH GOD now is what sets the course for the journey beyond this realm. If we are going to be prepared for God to some day take us, we need to be WALKING WITH HIM now! May our steps be in like faith of Enoch.
Have a great day GOING WITH GOD ALL THE WAY!

Beneath The Surface!
When a seed is able to get beneath the surface of the earth, something marvelous happens; it begins to grow. The growth is gradual -- at first even being undetectable -- but it eventually breaks through the ground, revealing it has taken root and the power of fruitfulness begins to be displayed. In the process of one of God’s wondrous miracles of life, this seed first dies (John 12:24) and then germinates and bears fruit after its kind. Biology may try to explain it, but is all that is behind THE POWER OF THE SEED coming to life really understood?
Note Jesus on the subject.
“(26) And he said, ‘The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. (27) He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; HE KNOWS NOT HOW. (28) The EARTH PRODUCES BY ITSELF, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. (29) But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.’” (Mark 4:26-29 ESV)
The man here is pictured as having planted the seed. Then, unattended by him -- even as he sleeps and rises and goes about other activities of the day and night -- the POWER WITHIN THE SEED begins doing its thing. He can’t explain it, but appreciates and expects it to happen. Then, when it is time, he goes about the harvest.
Spiritually speaking, we may wonder about the POWER OF THE SEED OF GOD’S WORD. However, when it is allowed to penetrate beneath the surface in a life, it begins to do what God intended it to do. (note Isaiah 55:11) Have we not experienced that ourselves as we have taken in God’s message? Have we not also seen it in the lives of others? We may wonder at the life changes it brings, but that is the POWER OF THE WORD itself when it is allowed to germinate and grow.
May we continue to spread the seed of God’s Word. Then as we see its power for growth doing its thing, let us nurture it and provide a climate for its continued growth by the fellowship we offer, being mindful of the harvest of souls God ultimately has in mind. We don’t have to be able to explain the process to be involved in it, but let us be involved!
Have a great day THANKING GOD FOR HIS WORD’S WONDROUS WORK!

Hands And Hearts!
Hands and hearts can both get us into trouble when not properly directed. However, both have the ability to GRASP, though the GRASPING may be in different ways. Consider the GRASPING contrast in one of our Lord’s encounters.
On one of the occasions when Jesus was teaching in a synagogue, he noticed a man with a withered hand. However, He was not the only one who knew that man was there. Jewish leaders were also aware of his presence and were watching to see if Jesus would heal him, thus giving them cause to accuse Jesus of working on a Sabbath. Jesus, being fully aware of what they were waiting for, had the man with the withered hand come to Him.
Then we read…
“(4) And he said to them, ‘Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?’ But THEY WERE SILENT. (5) And he looked around at them with anger, GRIEVED AT THEIR HARDNESS OF HEART, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and HIS HAND WAS RESTORED. (6) The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.” (Mark 3:4-6 ESV)
Jesus had compassion with regard to physical ailments. (Matthew 14:14) The suffering or limitation such imposed on others touched His heart. However, when it came to spiritual ailments, He was grieved. Hard heartedness is a worse affliction than the limitations of the flesh. Even if the hand is unable to GRASP, the heart still can if it is willing. These leaders had full use of their hands, but refused to reach out and GRASP the truth of Jesus. The miracle was seen. The healing was not denied. The power witnessed to restore the hand should have been enough to touch their hearts. It was the hardness of their hearts that would not allow any convincing sign of truth regarding Jesus to penetrate.
Note the spiritual health Paul desired for those He taught.
“(14) For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, (15) from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, (16) that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be STRENGTHENED WITH POWER THROUGH HIS SPIRIT IN YOUR INNER BEING, (17) so that CHRIST MAY DWELL IN YOUR HEARTS THROUGH FAITH -- that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may have STRENGTH TO COMPREHEND with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, (19) and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:14-19 ESV)
There is definitely an inside work of which to be open! As we reach out our hands and pick up God’s Word, are we continually allowing our heart to GRASP what we read? Though with age the hands may become weaker, may the heart continue to grow stronger through GRASPING the glorious truths of Jesus, the Savior of our soul.
Have a great day CONTINUING TO COMPREHEND THE CERTAINTIES OF CHRIST!

Consolation!
Someone has said, “Money may not be everything, but it is a great consolation until you have everything.” [source: calendar quote] That brings to mind a commercial I’ve seen recently on television that states, “I want it all! I want it all! And I want it now!”
What is “consolation”? A consolation is a source of COMFORT. It is an object, recognition, maybe a statement made, or reminder mentioned to console (COMFORT) when disappointment, loss, or a time of sadness is being experienced. However, if money is viewed as a great consolation it should be seen as very limited in its power to truly console. There is much that aids in providing COMFORT that money can never buy.
Note the following list that reveals money’s limitation.
Money can buy a house, but not a home.
Money can buy a bed, but not sleep.
Money can buy a clock, but not time.
Money can buy position, but not respect.
Money can buy a book, but not knowledge.
Money can buy blood, but not life.
Money can buy companions, but not friends.
Money can buy medicine, but not health.
Money can buy insurance, but not safety. [source: bulletin clipping]
Some people have become so set on making a living they have forgotten to make a life. Jesus exhorted toward working for “that which endures to eternal life.” (John 6:27) True peace, rest, relationships and a sense of homeness cannot be bought. Especially when it comes to relationships, if they are bought they will soon be found to be neither genuine nor lasting. Life must be associated with more than “things”! It is not just the lack of money that can create problems in life, but wealth itself can bring its own challenges. (note Matthew 19:20-26)
Jesus encouraged the disciples who had left all to follow Him by stating…
“(29) And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, WILL RECEIVE A HUNDREDFOLD AND WILL INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE.” (Matthew 19:29 ESV)
Though our greatest reward is yet to come when we go home to be with Jesus, we can still find much COMFORT in Him right now. Each of the things listed above that money cannot buy can be experienced in the fullest sense in the relationship in Christ to a greater degree spiritually than ever can be physically. May we find COMFORT in the fact living for Jesus will certainly prove to be worth it all!

In Agreement!
Someone has said, “You can always tell a well informed man -- his views are the same as yours.” [source: calendar quote] Is that our means of determining the wisdom of others; their agreement with us? Though we can be greatly encouraged in the company of those of kindred spirit, if we only seek association with those who agree with us, how can we learn where we might be wrong? On most any point we can probably find someone who will agree with us. However, simply making a comparison of ourselves with others is neither a wise nor a consistent standard. (note 2 Corinthians 10:12)
We are certainly in trouble if we are only seeking where God agrees with us. The aim needs to be the other way around. What we need is to have God helps us SEE AS HE SEES and so be in agreement with Him!
When Paul talked about the benefit He had under the Law, he wrote…
“(7) What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN SIN. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, ‘You shall not covet.’” (Romans 7:7 ESV)
Down a few verses he went on to state…
“(13) Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order THAT SIN MIGHT BE SHOWN TO BE SIN, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.” (Romans 7:13 ESV)
The Greek reads, “sin that it might shine sin”; the word “phaino” meaning to shine or be brought forth into light in the sense of appearing or becoming evident. That is why those who persist in sin love darkness rather than light, because the light exposes them. (note John 3:19-20) What we need is to remain in the light so that the sin in our life may be SEEN AS GOD SEES IT; utterly sinful! When sin is not seen AS GOD SEES it, it becomes rationalized and trivialized or even re-categorized as something else. (note Isaiah 5:20) Such is being wise in one’s own sight, rather than God’s (Isaiah 5:21)
Unless we agree to SEE AS GOD SEES we will never be able to acknowledge sin’s sinfulness, distastefulness, ugliness, or costliness so that we will be suitably compelled to fully turn from it. May we sincerely seek to agree with God’s views of sin so that through confession and repentance we can receive the blessing of forgiveness He is faithful to provide. (2 Corinthians 7:10 and 1 John 1:9) Then as we live in His light we will be enabled to clearly see that our deeds are being carried out in Him. (John 3:21)

Wealthy Ones!
Sometimes people think they are wealthy when in reality they are not; at least in what counts most. We read of some who fell into this category in Revelation 3:17-18. However, there are also those who may appear poor who in reality hold a possession of inestimable value; INTEGRITY of character. The rich of this world may set INTEGRITY aside in order to gain more position and wealth. The poor, on the other hand, may be tempted to be dishonest to gain a little more, but reveal the genuineness of their character by holding onto this priceless possession instead.
Perhaps Solomon had those of true wealth in mind when he wrote…
“BETTER IS A POOR PERSON WHO WALKS IN HIS INTEGRITY than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.” (Proverbs 19:1 ESV)
We find a similar statement later on where we read…
“BETTER IS A POOR MAN WHO WALKS IN HIS INTEGRITY than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.” (Proverbs 28:6 ESV)
Though the ones Solomon referred to may not have possessed much in the way of money or worldly goods, the INTEGRITY they possessed was of great value. There are many things we may feel we are lacking, but if this possession is not ours we are truly among the poorest of the poor. To be destitute of INTEGRITY can impact not only the physical life, but also to the depth of the soul with eternal consequences.
INTEGRITY of character! To have this possession is true riches indeed. Wealth and other possessions can be lost and one can still survive. However, when INTEGRITY is lost the destruction of reputation may never be regained in a lifetime as well as lead to the loss of the soul. The dividends we receive depend on what focuses and priorities we have most invested in for our life. Let us therefore never underestimate the value of INTEGRITY, always recognizing the stock that should be placed in it. May such character be guarded more than any other possession that might be ours.
Have a great day LIVING UPRIGHTLY RICH!

Within Our Element!
Turtles are fascinating creatures. I had the opportunity to see and photograph some large ones last November during a trip to the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Here is a creature that carries its home wherever it goes. When danger threatens the turtle is able to immediately retract its head and feet back into its shell. However, to move on there is the need to stick its neck out. Though on land turtles may move fairly slowly and appear a bit awkward and clumsy, in the sea they have the ability to glide along swiftly and far as if they are the soaring birds of the sea. This is the realm where their gracefulness can most be seen and admired. Though time is spent on the beach, it is the water that really appears to be their element.
Perhaps we feel a bit awkward in life. That may be a good thing to sense since the reality we should understand is this world is not really our home. As spiritual beings we are somewhat out of our element, but must guard against the tendency to retreat within our shell. Like the turtle, the only way we can progress forward is to stick our neck out. This is to be done with the focus of our FAITH AND RELIANCE ON GOD.
Isaiah encouraged…
“(28) Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. (29) HE GIVES POWER TO THE FAINT, and to him who has no might HE INCREASES STRENGTH. (30) Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; (31) but THEY WHO WAIT FOR THE LORD SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH; they shall MOUNT UP WITH WINGS LIKE EAGLES; they shall RUN AND NOT BE WEARY; they shall WALK AND NOT FAINT.” (Isaiah 40:28-31 ESV)
Our movement and progress may at times seem slow on earth. However, as for the turtle it is slow and steady that takes it toward the water, we too must keep moving steadily onward knowing that within THE ELEMENT OF FAITH AND RELIANCE ON God we can ultimately soar.
It was Paul who unequivocally stated…
“I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians 4:13 ESV)
May we be willing to stick our neck out so as to keep moving forward as we continue to look to God for His power to lift us up to soar freely like eagles. Though we might feel the gravity of this world working to hold us back, our steadfast FAITH AND RELIANCE ON GOD can keep us moving onward and upward. His power and strength can lift us far above it all!
Have a great day KNOWING WITH GOD THE SKY IS REALLY NOT THE LIMIT!

Honestly, Now!
Not too long ago -- while leading a Bible class discussion on God’s wondrous work of renewal -- one of the passages I had listed was in Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae. Two verses we noted are as follows:
“(9) Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices (10) and have put on THE NEW SELF, which is being renewed in knowledge after THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV)
Though verse ten was what I wanted to center on for our discussion, verse nine was included for the sake of context and to keep from beginning the reading mid-sentence. What an encouraging focus Paul noted regarding renewal back toward the image of our Creator! However, one of the sisters in the congregation was struck by the first part of the reading and asked, “Were there liars in the church there?” My response was that there must have apparently been a problem with a lack of TRUTHFULNESS since Paul addressed it, reminding his readers that lying was a part of the old self and its practices which they were to have put off when they were united in Christ. Untruthfulness does not fit with “life being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”
Unfortunately even today not everyone in the church is as they ought to be. Let us be HONEST about the reality none of us is perfect. The perfecting process in Christ is an ongoing thing. However, that does not excuse us. We still need to be watchful for the things in our life that are completely out of character with our Christian walk. It is bad enough when one tells a lie to mask themselves, but when the lie is told about another in order to justify self (or for some other reason) it is even worse because the reputation of a brother or sister is being destroyed in the process.
When Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus, he stated…
“(25) Therefore, HAVING PUT AWAY FALSEHOOD, let each one of you SPEAK THE TRUTH with his neighbor, for WE ARE MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.” (Ephesians 4:25)
Remember yesterday we noted the idea of being “members one of another” and what that sense of belonging should mean. Falsehood and lying cause division and destroy that one-anotherness. It is TRUTH that properly directs our life along the right path. It is TRUTH that unites us together and solidifies our relationships. This is the way of love because love rejoices with the TRUTH. (1 Corinthians 13:6)
Given that Jesus is TRUTH (John 14:6), and since we as Christians live in Him and He in us (read John 15:4-5; Romans 8:10; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:6-7; 1 John 2:6), would that not imply TRUTH is to be characteristic of our life as well? We can’t be in Him and walk in a different direction at the same time! May such godly character be evident in all areas of our life.
Have a great day STRIVING FOR UPRIGHTNESS IN ALL THINGS!
