Down For The Count!

The expression “down for the count” generally refers to an individual having been knocked down in a boxing match with the count having begun. If they remain down for the duration of the count, they lose the match. Perhaps such a situation is a sign that the competitor’s ability and strength were no match for the opponent. The ring was entered with the hope of victory, but the bout was lost.

Consider a little bit of a twist on the expression “down for the count.” Is there an arena where victory is actually gained in the process of GOING DOWN? Is there not a sense in which we must recognize the need to be “down for the count” in order for our life to count for what is best?

Jesus stated the concept this way…
“(24) Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL FIND IT.’” ( Matthew 16:24-25 ESV)

To become a disciple (follower and learner) of Jesus, self needs to humbly STEP DOWN through DENYING SELF-WILL with a willingness to follow Jesus’ Will! It is ultimately through LOSING OURSELVES IN CHRIST that our truest life is gained! (note Colossians 3:4) This may be seen as the first step in rightly acknowledging our own ability and strength is not enough, but in the process of LOSING OURSELVES WE BECOME THE VICTORS THROUGH JESUS. With self being “down for the count” -- as in the duration of our life -- our life will count for Christ as we follow Him, allowing His Will to continually influence us.

Ultimately in Christ is where we find our life exalted by God. May we be willing to GO DOWN for that which counts for now and eternity.

Have a great day KNOWING IN CHRIST VICTORY IS ASSURED!
