One Of Another!

I walked into the main office of a state park in our area to get some information some time ago and was greeted in the following manner by one of the park office staff: “There’s our walker.” Did I belong to them? Was I really theirs? Was I owned by the park or any of its employees? More recently after being the community volunteer chaplain to be dispatched to deal with a very tragic death, word filtered back to some of the other chaplains regarding how I had dealt with the situation and the chaplain coordinator said, “That’s our boy.” Again, a similar expression of attachment. Perhaps many of those reading this focus have had similar experiences.

“My.” “Mine.” “Our.” “Ours.” Those are possessive pronouns. They are indicative of a sense of attachment; words that imply BELONGING. Are those words not usually used in a good sense? Perhaps they are words we understand to simply reveal a desire for association. We might even be greatly encouraged by a sign others want to be associated with us in some way. How much more so should that be the experience within the body of Christ, the church! How serious are we about the sense of BELONGING that ought to exist among us as Christians and especially within the local congregation?

In Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth he exhorted toward the following focus.
“(4) For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, (5) so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and INDIVIDUALLY MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.” (Romans 12:4-5 ESV)

“Members one of another.” Doesn’t that expression indicate a certain sense of BELONGING? The Greek seems to imply the idea of something mutual. Is there created among us a depth of relationship that might even indicate a sense of ownership from which arise statements such as: “There’s MY brother.”, “There’s MY sister.”, “That’s MY family.”, and “These are MY people.”?

Taking it a step further, do we individually own up to what goes along with that relationship? Such a sense of BELONGING to one another should compel us to earnestly look out for each other. That focus should instill a willingness to bear one another’s burdens. Such a mutual perspective ought to inspire us to stand by one another through thick and thin. (note Hebrews 10:33-34) Is such being mutually made manifest in our body life together?

Let us do our part to cultivate that sense of BELONGING within God’s family. May it become a sight so beautiful that others will want to be drawn into such an association in Christ as well. This is the only realm where the sense of BELONGING lasts an eternity.

Have a great day LOYALLY LOVE-LINKED TO OTHERS IN THE LORD!

Oratory Objective!

Some people are highly critical of others. When individuals become known for this characteristic in communication, often what they say is tuned out even when it might have been BENEFICIAL.

Criticism is generally defined as an opinion or judgment of what is wrong with someone or something and is often expressed in terms of disapproval of perceived faults. However it is also used of the judgment or discussion of the qualities of something such as a creative work. “Constructive criticism” is frequently what people think they are offering as a good thing when they are actually doing what those two words convey; building up and then tearing down. What should be the goal of criticism if it is going to be offered?

Someone has stated, “The goal of criticism is to leave the person with the feeling that he or she has been helped.” [source: bulletin clipping]

Would we not agree that this is a worthy objective? It is possible to be critical of others with no desire to help them at all. However, when we do want to bring BENEFIT to their life, we need to be mindful of the manner in which we approach them. In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus, in just the space of one sentence he provided a simple rule of thumb that can make a critical difference in our communication with others.

We read…
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is GOOD FOR BUILDING UP, as FIT’S THE OCCASION, that it may GIVE GRACE TO THOSE WHO HEAR.” (Ephesians 4:29 ESV)

Three principles to keep in mind: BUILDING UP, wisely considering the APPROPRIATENESS FOR THE OCCASION, and bringing GRACIOUS BENEFIT to the one with whom we are speaking. This is the kind of speech that is most likely to allow our listeners to walk away knowing we genuinely care and feeling they have been truly helped. May we become known for such a characteristic in our communication with others.

Have a great day SET FOR HELPING OUR HEARERS!

A Distinguished People!

What is your most treasured possession? How do you care for it? Where do you keep it? Do you like to show if off to others? Perhaps it is something you bought with your own hard earned money? Maybe it is something that was given to you by a special person or awarded to you for special recognition.

When God sent the plagues on Egypt, the Scriptures specifically note with several of them how He made a clear distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites by excluding His people from exposure to them. (note Exodus 8:22; 9:4 & 26; 10:23; 11:7) Then as the nation of Israel gathered in the wilderness near the mountains of Sinai, God wanted Moses to convey to the people the SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP He desired to have with them. However, there was still the need for them to remain faithful to Him in that relationship.

We read…
“(5) Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be MY TREASURED POSSESSION among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; (6) and you shall be to me A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS and A HOLY NATION. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” (Exodus 19:5-6 ESV)

To be viewed by God in such a SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP as His “treasured possession”! What an honor! What a privilege! And to also be viewed as a “kingdom of priests” and a “holy nation”! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have such a distinction ourselves? Wouldn’t it thrill us to know that we were in a SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP with God? Wouldn’t such a reality compel us to always seek to remain faithful to that relationship? Well, as Christians we do have such a distinction! Though all the earth in reality belongs to God because He is the Creator and sustainer of it, there is a SPECIAL BOND with those who rightfully acknowledge Him.

Peter -- in writing to Christians during the first century of the church -- after referring to those who stumbled through disobedience he stated…

“(9) But you are a CHOSEN RACE, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, a people for HIS OWN POSSESSION, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (10) Once you were not a people, but now YOU ARE GOD’S PEOPLE; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” (1 Peter 2:9-10 ESV)

Because of our relationship to God through Christ we have been brought into a very SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP! We are a possession God treasures! We are a people God has distinguished as a “chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation” and acknowledged as His people! Can it get any more special than that? This appears to be the relationship God has always desired and continues to desire to have with those who are willing to wholly and faithfully acknowledge Him as their God. As His “treasured possession” we can therefore trust Him to take good care of us!

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE SPECIAL BLESSING OF BEING GOD’S!

Seeing What's Heard!

Yesterday morning (Sunday) the sermon I preached focused on the example of Jesus practicing what He preached. As He exhorted others toward loving and praying for enemies (Matthew 5:43-45), He demonstrated that mercifulness when He was arrested (Luke 22:50-51) and the willingness to pray for His enemies as He endured the cross. (Luke 23:33-34) Jesus has not asked us to do anything He was not willing to do Himself. Looking at His walk on earth we should see the most CONSISTENT model there is for patterning our life and so live pleasing to God.

The story has been told of a preacher preaching a sermon based on the commandment, “Thou shalt not steal.” The next morning he got on a bus and handed the bus driver a dollar to which he was given change. After the preacher moved to the back of the bus, he began counting his change and realized he had been given a dime too much. Ten cents was not much money. Surely the bus company wouldn’t go broke on a missing dime. However, the pressing realization was that the dime did not rightfully belong to him. Therefore, he returned to the front of the bus and told the driver he had been given too much change. With a smile, the bus driver informed him that he had actually done it purposely because he happened to have been in attendance the previous day and heard the sermon he’d preached. Viewing the preacher in his mirror, the bus driver had watched him count the change and waited to see what he would do. “If you had kept the dime,” the driver stated, “ I could have no confidence in your preaching.”

Ten cents! One thin dime! Simply on that hinged a determination between CONSISTENCY or the failure to put into practice what one preached. We too need to live mindful of even the little things that might indicate a lack of genuineness in what we claim to believe.

Jesus levied the following charge against some of the leaders of that day:
“(1) Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, (2) ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, (3) so practice and observe whatever they tell you -- but not what they do. For THEY PREACH, BUT DO NOT PRACTICE.’” (Matthew 23:1-3 ESV)

Practicing what we preach is not just the rule for preachers and teachers, but for all of us who claim to be Christians. Paul also touched on this subject, noting that such a lack of CONSISTENCY caused the name of God to be blasphemed by others. (Romans 2:21-24) With eagerness to note any discrepancies, the world is watching to see how CONSISTENT we are between what we say and do.

Writing to the church at Rome Paul urged…
“Repay no one evil for evil, but GIVE THOUGHT TO DO WHAT IS HONORABLE IN THE SIGHT OF ALL.” (Romans 12:17 ESV)

And in his letter to the church at Corinth, Paul noted his own attitude in stating…
“for we aim at what is HONORABLE NOT ONLY IN THE LORD’S SIGHT but ALSO IN THE SIGHT OF MAN.” (2 Corinthians 8:21 ESV)

As the bus driver looked in the mirror to watch what this preacher would do, we also look in the mirror at ourselves. Even if others don’t know about our INCONSISTENCIES, we do and so does God. Let us seek to live in a manner that others can recognize the CONSISTENCY between what we say and do so as to come to understand the wisdom of God’s standard and our genuineness as Christians. It could possibly be only a dime’s worth of wisdom that creates an inestimable impression in another’s life and bring glory to God.

Have a great day LIVING THE LORD’S LIFE LESSONS!

Meat Of Life!

Many years ago, our two oldest children (who were quite young at the time) were taken on a picnic by my younger brother. As they got ready to eat and were preparing the hotdog buns with all the stuff that goes on them, my brother told our son he had forgotten the hotdogs. Our son thought that was so funny, but was still content as he prepared to eat the hotdog bun with all the fixings, minus the hotdog. My brother was only kidding, however, and had not actually forgotten the hotdogs.

When cooking, forgetting about the herbs and spices can make the food taste bland. However, though these have the ability to enhance flavor, how satisfied would we be with just herbs and spices alone? Don’t we also want the meat or other foods that they complement? Is the same not also true in approaching life?

It is possible to get so focused on some of the tiniest details that the bigger things are forgotten. Such was an accusation Jesus levied against many of the Jewish leaders of that day.

We read…
“(23) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you TITHE MINT and DILL and CUMIN, and HAVE NEGLECTED THE WEIGHTIER matters of the law: JUSTICE and MERCY and FAITHFULNESS. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. (24) You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” (Mathew 23:23-24 ESV)

Note that Jesus did not say it was wrong for them to have tithed such things. It was a requirement of the law. However, in so doing they should not have forgotten what Jesus referred to as “weightier matters”: JUSTICE, MERCY, and FAITHFULNESS. These leaders were so precise in one area of their life and yet grossly negligent in another. They had the spice, but not the substance; straining out the small while chocking down the huge!

Do we make a big deal out of little things while forgetting some of the weightier matters of life? Little stuff can have its importance and should not be neglected in our interaction with others. Those actions can aid in seasoning life for those around us. However, we also need to keep JUSTICE, MERCY, and FAITHFULNESS in mind as we go through all of life’s activities. Remembering the meat of Christian living and all the additives that complement it can help others get a taste of what God’s goodness is all about. May our life provide something for others to savor.

Have a great day FOLLOWING GOD’S RECIPE FOR LIVING!

Fear And Faith!

POWER is quite awesome in some of the ways in which it is displayed. It is very useful when properly channeled, but extremely dangerous when the connection is not right. High voltage ought to be highly respected. Still, it is amazing how voltage can either take a life or be used to shock the heart back into pumping to revive life. That’s the thing about POWER; the circumstances and perception associated with it can widely vary.

Though God’s great POWER was displayed through each of the plagues in Egypt, it did not take long for the Israelites to state their distrust after beginning the departure from Egypt. (Exodus 14:10-12) With the sea in front of them and the Egyptian army closing in behind, they thought they were doomed. However, Moses assured the people that God was going to fight for them and they would see the salvation of the Lord that very day. (Exodus 14:13-14) Then we read of the Israelites walking through the sea on dry land, but when Pharaoh’s army followed, it was the Egyptians who met their doom.

Upon seeing the salvation God brought about we read…
“ISRAEL SAW THE GREAT POWER THAT THE LORD USED against the Egyptians, so the people FEARED THE LORD, and they BELIEVED IN THE LORD and in his servant Moses.” (Exodus 14:31 ESV)

The POWER of God was an awesome sight! What could possibly even come close to matching it? God’s POWER was to be highly respected! However, to also believe in the Lord meant to trust in His POWER to work for them rather than against. Israel needed to learn and retain that trust as do we.

God has POWER and how truly awesome is that POWER! It is a POWER to do even beyond our imagination! (Ephesians 3:20) Even so, it is a POWER to be respected!

The Hebrew writer pointed out…
“(30) For we know him who said, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay.’ And again, ‘The Lord will judge his people.’ (31) It is A FEARFUL THING TO FALL INTO THE HANDS OF THE LIVING GOD.” (Hebrews 10:30-31 ESV)

God has POWER to judge and condemn. Peter also noted the POWER of God as being able to deal with judgment, but noted that same POWER as being able “to rescue the godly from trials” as well. (2 Peter 2:4-10) Though God will judge and do so righteously, that is not His ultimate desire. He desires to bless and save as His Authority and POWER are respected. Through maintaining a right connection to His POWER it becomes a blessing. As we have a healthy reverential fear for God, do we also trust in His loving POWER to work for us? Have we come to know God and His love in that way (1 John 4:16) so that we can place our confidence in Him for the day of judgment? (1 John 4:17)

John encouraged…
“(18) There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” (1 John 4:18 ESV)

Fear and faith in the POWER of God! May we seek to retain a healthy perception of His POWER? By maintaining the right connection with God we will find ourselves on the receiving end of the full benefit of being plugged into the most awesome POWER SOURCE there is! Remember -- of His POWER there will never be an energy crisis!

Have a great day CONNECTED FOR GENERATING STEADFAST FAITH!

Seeing It!

Not all people have what it takes for working in the medical field. Some get woozy or sick at the very sight of blood. There are even those who pass out when they see blood from a gash or wound. Thankfully there are those who can handle the blood and therefore provide for those needs.

When God was having Moses prepare the Israelites for their departure from Egypt, they were instructed to take a lamb to be roasted and eaten, but some of the blood was to be placed on the upper and side parts of the door frame. In doing this there was a distinction that would be made between the Israelites and the Egyptians during the tenth and final plague; the death of the firstborn.

God declared…
“The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD, I WILL PASS OVER YOU, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13 ESV)

At the sight of the blood, God would not pass out, but would PASS OVER that house and death would not come to that household. This was the first Passover that would be commemorated year after year as a memorial of God’s deliverance from bondage.

We also have been delivered by blood. This blood was not smeared on doorposts or the beam above the door, but was shed from the beam of a cross. Jesus “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV) and by His blood we have been justified (Romans 5:9), freed from our sins (Rev. 1:5), redeemed or ransomed (1 Peter 1:18-19), and brought near to God. (Ephesians 2:13)

Praise be to our Father in Heaven that as He looks at our life -- since we have put on Christ (Galatians 3:27) -- He sees the blood of His Son and will PASS OVER our sins. Our Lord made that which some would consider gross to become a beautiful and precious offering on our behalf. He handled it for us and in so doing provided for our greatest need!

Have a great day SEEING THE BEAUTY OF CHRIST’S BLOOD!

Generic Guidance!

“Well, that may work for you, but how about me?” Have we ever offered advice that was responded to in such a manner or have we perhaps responded to another that way ourselves? There’s a whole lot of advice floating around in this world and some of it may work for some folks in certain situations, but not necessarily for others. Perhaps what we like to find is the advice that seems to work for just about anyone in a multitude of varying situations; advice that in a sense bears the label of some clothing: “One Size Fits Most.”

Solomon noted…
“(27) WHOEVER RESTRAINS HIS WORDS HAS KNOWLEDGE, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. (28) EVEN A FOOL WHO KEEPS SILENT IS CONSIDERED WISE; when he closes his lips, he is DEEMED INTELLIGENT.” (Proverbs 17:27-28 ESV)

For both the wise and the fool (if they will try it), RESTRAINT OF WORDS or merely keeping the MOUTH SHUT can be a brilliant choice. Sometimes in the attempt to get in the last word one merely finds themselves starting the next argument. There are times when we must realize enough has been said and if the point hasn’t been made (or accepted) more words may be of no help. Even the fool’s silence could cause them to be perceived as wise when the opening of the mouth might reveal otherwise. Therefore keeping the MOUTH SHUT is wise advice for either the person of understanding or the fool and the wise would be foolish not to accept it. Though it may seem like a simple rule it can work wonders in most of our interpersonal relationships.

Have a great day KNOWING WHEN TO BE THE STRONG SILENT TYPE!

Important Interrupted!

Sometimes we are involved in important things that get interrupted for one reason or another. Perhaps we have experienced being focused on work that needs to be done and then something happens that destroys the focus, and no matter how hard we try we just can’t continue with what we were doing. At such times we may have to walk away and either deal with the situation or -- if it is something we cannot change -- we may need to go do something else to either clear our mind or get our mind off of it before returning to complete our task.

There are situations when there is the need for our focus to be interrupted rather than being allowed to carry on with the present task. In Jesus’ sermon on the mount He addressed such a situation in the setting of Jewish worship.

We read…
“(23) So if you are offering your gift at the altar AND THERE REMEMBER that your brother has something against you, (24) LEAVE YOUR GIFT there before the altar AND GO. FIRST BE RECONCILED to your brother, and THEN COME AND OFFER your gift.” (Matthew 5:23-24 ESV)

Was making the offering important? Yes! Is worship to God something we ought not neglect? Most certainly! However, Jesus appears to have pointed out that one cannot approach God in worship acceptably when there has not been an effort to rectify OTHER RELATIONSHIPS. Our RELATIONSHIP to God necessitates -- as far as it depends on us (Romans 12:18) -- approaching our OTHER RELATIONSHIPS properly. (note 1 John 4:20-21) Jesus did not say, “Hurry up and offer the gift so you can then go and take care of the situation.” As one was there prepared to make the offering and had their actions interrupted by the remembrance of a RELATIONSHIP that was not right, they were to stop what they were doing, go take care of the situation, and then return to complete the offering. That reveals how seriously RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHERS are to be considered. Peter later wrote that a husband’s prayers could be hindered if he did not approach the RELATIONSHIP with his wife in a proper manner. (1 Peter 3:7)

As we seek to retain a proper RELATIONSHIP with God, let us be mindful of our OTHER RELATIONSHIPS as well, understanding how it is all linked together. When even our important activities are interrupted by such remembrance may we be thankful our heart has not become hardened toward others. We may not be able to right all RELATIONSHIPS, but we are responsible for doing what we can. Let us seek God’s wisdom in doing so.

Have a great day RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF RIGHT RELATIONSHIPS!

Deciding What's Deserved?

Some people gloat over the misfortune of others, especially when they think those individuals are getting exactly what they deserve. Perhaps such an inclination is not far from our own heart. However, there are others who focus on such circumstances from the standpoint of not wishing them even on their worst enemy. What is it we truly WISH FOR OTHERS regardless of who they are?

Solomon cautioned…
“(17) DO NOT REJOICE when your enemy falls, and LET NOT YOUR HEART BE GLAD when he stumbles, (18) LEST THE LORD SEE IT AND BE DISPLEASED, and turn away his anger from him.” (Proverbs 24:17-18 ESV)

Could our gloating actually cause God to side with our enemy? Perhaps what we need to humbly acknowledge is the basic problem with gloating. Is it not the taking on of an attitude of superiority over others? Are we so much better and therefore glad to receive exactly what we deserve? (note Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8-10) Or are we in truth thankful we do not receive what we deserve? Are we thankful to God that He in fact has chosen to not treat us as our sins merit (Psalm 103:10), but instead is gracious toward us? Also, isn’t the vengeance God’s to work out in whatever manner and time He chooses? (Romans 12:19) What we ought to seek to develop is GOD’S WISH (DESIRE) FOR OTHERS!

Peter noted…
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, NOT WISHING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD REACH REPENTANCE.” (2 Peter 3:9 ESV)

May we truly share that DIVINE DESIRE OF GOD FOR OTHERS. Having our heart focused with such a desire will cause us to have sorrow for those stumbling due to their choices rather than rejoicing. This will also compel us in whatever contact we might have with them to do so with their highest good in mind; the restoration or salvation of their soul.

Have a great day GUIDED BY A GRATEFUL GODLY HEART!

Life Source!

In the 1600’s an English physician by the name of William Harvey is noted for having discovered the circulation of blood in the body. His work on the circulatory system was formally published in 1628. Prior to that time little was known about the value of blood, with one prevailing notion being that blood was the source of disease rather than life’s defense against it. That is why bleeding (called “bloodletting”) was done in an effort to rid sick individuals of disease. It has been suggested that such action was what quickened the death of George Washington.

What is it that God has declared regarding blood? Several thousand years before William Harvey, God declared to Noah that the LIFE IS IN THE BLOOD. (Genesis 9:4-5) This was also stated in the law given to Moses. (Leviticus 17:10-14) Along with this reference, atonement was also associated with that LIFE BLOOD.

Life! That is what we have because of the ATONING BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST. If the association of the BLOOD OF CHRIST is ignored, then Jesus said, “you have no life in you.” (John 6:53) Drawn into that association Jesus went on to say there is eternal life and such a one would be raised up on the last day. (John 6:54) It is THE BLOOD OF OUR LORD that has the power to deal with mankind’s greatest disease -- sin -- and bring about life to its fullest!

John encouraged…
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN.” (1 John 1:7 ESV)

BLOOD! LIFE BLOOD! Without it we would have no life and no hope! CHRIST’S BLOOD possesses the power to deal adequately -- once and for all (Hebrews 10:10 and 14) -- with our sins and provide the means of life everlasting! Praise the Lord for the LIFE BLOOD that flowed for us and continues to work on our behalf even today!

Have a great day WITH THE BLOOD OF CHRIST CIRCULATING IN OUR LIFE!

He Don't Make Junk!

If Henry Ford were alive today, he would probably be thrilled to see some of his shiny model T’s still motoring around. To know what he invented and built was being well cared for and kept in good working condition would perhaps provide him with a sense of pride. On the other hand, how might he feel to see rusted out frames and bumpers laying out in farm fields or heaped up in junk yards? Though we realize vehicles do wear out, some of what gets junked is either because it was not properly used or there was not enough interest to take care of it.

A number of years ago I remember seeing shirts and posters with the words “God Don’t Make Junk!” Though the grammar may not be correct, the statement most definitely is! God doesn’t make junk! Everything He has made and wants to provide for us is good. (Gen. 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25; James 1:17) It is quality stuff! Nevertheless, many do not appreciate what God has provided. Even their own life is not cared for in accordance with His will. Therefore we see people whose lives have lost their luster and become corrupted. Still, hope is not completely lost. Just as some of those old cars have been rescued from the junk heap, cleaned up, pieced together, and put back on the road, God has provided the means for such be done with lives that should be seen as being of more value than an automobile.

Throughout the ages God has continued to be in the RESTORATION business. Lives that others might have given up on as only worthy of being junked, He has brought back to life. Jesus was going about that very business when He was accused of being a friend of tax collectors and sinners. (Matthew 11:19; also note 9:10-12)

The image God created us to possess gets marred by neglect or choices we have made. However, God has graciously provided the means of bringing marvelous transformation to our lives in order to RESTORE that image and make it shine again. (note 2 Corinthians 3:18)

The reality of an auto body is that it will not last forever. God did not create the human body to last forever either. Praise God we will some day be provided a new one. (1 Corinthians 15:51-53) However, note the following encouragement as we continue to live day by day.

Paul stated…
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer nature is wasting away, OUR INNER NATURE IS BEING RENEWED DAY BY DAY.” (2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV)

Taking care of this body while we have it is a good thing. After all, it is a temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19) When we became Christians we put on a “NEW SELF, which is being RENEWED in knowledge after THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:10) Rather than “Ford” may it be “LORD” that is displayed on our life’s shiny front!

Have a great day LIVING LIFE DRIVEN TO PLEASE OUR MAKER!

The Right Factors!

In multiplication it is the “factors” involved that determine the outcome. The digits “zero” and “one” do not compute to any increase. In fact zero actually reduces whatever we have to nothing.

Besides multiplication being a system of mathematics, the word is also defined as a marked increase in the number or amount of something. Multiplication means more. Though additions gradually add up, that which is multiplied increases even quicker. What are the “factors” of multiplication in our life and what is the resulting outcome?

In the opening address of Peter’s second letter, he stated…
“May GRACE AND PEACE BE MULTIPLIED to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” (2 Peter 1:2 ESV)

The Greek word used by Peter that is translated “multiplied” is “plethunthein”. This word is from “plethuno”, which (according to W. E. Vine’s “Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words) is a lengthened form of “pletho”, “to fill” -- a word akin to “plethos”, “a multitude” -- and is used to signify “to increase” or “to multiply”.

The key factor here in Peter’s equation is knowledge associated with God and our Lord Jesus Christ. However, that is not just “gnosis” (knowledge), but rather “epignosis” (literally “full knowledge” or referring to precise and correct knowledge) to which Peter made reference. We are to strive for an in-depth and intimate knowledge of God and our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through coming to know our Heavenly Father and Savior in this way that we should naturally experience the increased blessing of MULTIPLIED GRACE AND PEACE in our life.

Imagine having our life filled or crowded with GRACE AND PEACE! Such is a blessing God desires for us and has provided the means of through our life in Christ. Knowing His great love and will for our life -- and in our acceptance of it -- should provide great comfort in His GRACE and fill us with an abiding sense of PEACE regarding life now and the eternity that awaits us. May that “full knowledge” be rightfully factored into our daily life so that all of God’s blessings may become exponentially ours!

Have a great day KEEPING LIFE’S ETERNAL EQUATION IN FOCUS!

Knowing Our Audience!

We have knowledge. There are things that need to be said. When doing so, sometimes it is the timing that must be considered. (note Proverbs 15:23 and 25:11) Other times it is to whom we are speaking. Then there are times when how much to say at the time is to be taken into account. Therefore, along with knowledge there is the need to exercise some WISDOM in sharing it. Someone has said, “Wisdom is divided into two parts: having a great deal to say -- and not saying it.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]

Such WISDOM was made evident as the writer of Hebrews stated…
“About this WE HAVE MUCH TO SAY, and it is HARD TO EXPLAIN, since YOU HAVE BECOME DULL OF HEARING.” (Hebrews 5:11 ESV)

The Hebrew writer went on to note that though his readers should have matured in their knowledge to the point of being teachers of it, they were still in need of being taught again basic principles of God’s message. They were still in need of “milk” rather than solid food. (Hebrews 5:12) He then encouraged them toward growth. The writer to these Christians revealed an understanding of the audience to whom he was writing and in WISDOM approached them on that basis while still encouraging them toward growth.

We also need to be careful not to assume others know what we know. WISDOM is exercised when we listen to understand their understanding so that we can then patiently guide toward deeper truths of God’s Word. Though we ought to hold unwaveringly to the truth, attacking or beating others over the head with it is more likely to build barriers than to open a door of opportunity. We must also guard against showing off how much we might know by dumping it on them all at once. Though there is urgency associated with the message of Christ, kindly sharing bit by bit we can hopefully help others develop a craving to hear more.

Note the exercise of WISDOM Peter urged in talking about our hope in Christ.
“(15) but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, always BEING PREPARED TO MAKE A DEFENSE to anyone who asks you FOR A REASON FOR THE HOPE THAT IS IN YOU; (16) yet DO IT WITH GENTLENESS AND RESPECT, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.” (1 Peter 3:15-16 ESV)

Gentleness and respect can go a long way in keeping the door of conversation open. We must do more than merely getting people told, but rather getting them sold on the need for Jesus. May we exercise WISDOM in considering where others are as we share the hope of Christ to help them get to where Christ wants them.

Have a great day MAXIMIZING THE MANNER OF SHARING CHRIST’S MESSAGE!

Righfully Nurtured!

People fall in love and they fall out of love. This is true of relationships between people and also with other objects of their affection. People can be so fickle; head over heals over one thing one moment and then another the next. What one truly loves is what they tend to hold on to no matter what! Besides having love properly directed, to maintain an adequate level of love or continue to grow in love we need to recognize that love is to be nurtured.

Both our Lord and Paul provided a clear warning regarding a misdirected love. (Luke 12:15-21; 1 Timothy 6:10) The possessions or money they alluded to were not the problem in and of themselves, but the love attached to them is what created the life challenge. Perhaps we know people who seem to treat their possessions better than they treat people; even those within their own family. In Paul’s second letter to Timothy he mentioned a time coming that would be marked by a whole list of challenges due to misdirected affections. (2 Timothy 3:1-5) Those very things are definitely prevalent in the world today.

Are we nurturing love TOWARD THE PROPER END? Even love for the right things must still be nurtured. If it is not, that love can far too easily grow cold and die.

The church at Ephesus received the following warning.
“(4) But I have this against you, that YOU HAVE ABANDONED THE LOVE YOU HAD AT FIRST. (5) Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lamp stand from its place, unless you repent.” (Revelation 2:4-5 ESV)

During our Lord’s earthly ministry He also gave the following exhortation…

“(12) And because lawlessness will be increased, THE LOVE OF MANY WILL GROW COLD. (13) But the one who ENDURES TO THE END will be saved.” (Matthew 24:12-13 ESV)

Noting the whole context of Jesus’ statement, it appears the diminishing love would not only be for the Lord and the Truth, but for others as well. Such love must be continually nurtured so that it does not grow cold. Maintaining a love that is properly directed toward what the Lord loves can empower us to ENDURE TO THE END through whatever trials may come so that IN THE END we will receive the salvation our Lord came to provide. May a genuine love be properly focused and nurtured TOWARD THAT END!

Have a great day NURTURING AN ABIDING LOVE FOR GOD’S LOVES!

Down For The Count!

The expression “down for the count” generally refers to an individual having been knocked down in a boxing match with the count having begun. If they remain down for the duration of the count, they lose the match. Perhaps such a situation is a sign that the competitor’s ability and strength were no match for the opponent. The ring was entered with the hope of victory, but the bout was lost.

Consider a little bit of a twist on the expression “down for the count.” Is there an arena where victory is actually gained in the process of GOING DOWN? Is there not a sense in which we must recognize the need to be “down for the count” in order for our life to count for what is best?

Jesus stated the concept this way…
“(24) Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him DENY HIMSELF and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE WILL FIND IT.’” (Matthew 16:24-25 ESV)

To become a disciple (follower and learner) of Jesus, self needs to humbly STEP DOWN through DENYING SELF-WILL with a willingness to follow Jesus’ Will! It is ultimately through LOSING OURSELVES IN CHRIST that our truest life is gained! (note Colossians 3:4) This may be seen as the first step in rightly acknowledging our own ability and strength is not enough, but in the process of LOSING OURSELVES WE BECOME THE VICTORS THROUGH JESUS. With self being “down for the count” -- as in the duration of our life -- our life will count for Christ as we follow Him, allowing His Will to continually influence us.

Ultimately in Christ is where we find our life exalted by God. May we be willing to GO DOWN for that which counts for now and eternity.

Have a great day KNOWING IN CHRIST VICTORY IS ASSURED!

Signs!

In the twelfth chapter of Matthew we read…
“Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, ‘Teacher, WE WISH TO SEE A SIGN FROM YOU.’” (Matthew 12:38 ESV)

On more than one occasion Jewish leaders asked Jesus for A SIGN. Though they could not deny the miracles Jesus had already performed -- which were a true demonstration of His Divine power -- they still refused to accept Him as the Messiah. What possible sign could convince them?

Perhaps they needed a STOP SIGN for them to stop and consider their own attitude and heart condition that created their inability to be touched by the truth. (i.e. Mark 3:5) Maybe it was a YIELD SIGN that was needed to get their attention since they were apparently unwilling to yield and submit their lives to Jesus and thus to the Will of God. (Matthew 16:24-25) Or possibly it was a SPEED LIMIT SIGN they needed to see to refrain them from rushing on ahead of God’s commands with their own. (note 2 John 9)

In Jesus’ response to their request for A SIGN we read…
“(39) But he answered them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks for A SIGN, but NO SIGN will be given to it EXCEPT THE SIGN OF THE PROPHET JONAH. (40) For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, SO WILL THE SON OF MAN BE THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH.’” (Matthew 12:39-40 ESV)

When Jesus rose from the dead, did they finally believe? Was that SIGN sufficient to finally gain their attention and direct their lives appropriately? What we find is a lie was proposed and a payoff made in an attempt to actually cover the truth of our Lord’s resurrection. (Matthew 28:12-15)

The problem is not that more SIGNS were (or are) needed, but that the ones posted were often ignored. What God has already revealed should be seen as sufficient for us to believe, if we are willing!

As John wrote toward the end of His Gospel…
“(30) Now JESUS DID MANY OTHER SIGNS in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; (31) but THESE ARE WRITTEN SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30-31 ESV)

Let us STOP and consider our own attitude and heart condition, be willing to YIELD more fully to the Lordship of Christ, and NOT SPEED on in pursuit of our own will. May we instead remain on the narrow road that leads to eternal life, accepting the adequacy of what God has revealed to guide our journey though life, so that we will ultimately arrive safely home with Him.

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE SUFFICIENCY OF WHAT GOD HAS REVEALED!

Progressing!

Though we are not given a lot of information regarding the early years of Jesus growing up in the home of a Jewish carpenter, what is mentioned in Scripture is significant enough to find application for our own personal growth. At age twelve we read of Jesus going to Jerusalem with Joseph and Mary as was their custom. (Luke 2:41-42) However, the next eighteen years prior to the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry are only referred to briefly in a short synopsis provided by Luke.

We read…
“And JESUS INCREASED in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52 ESV)

Four areas of growth are acknowledged in this text: intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social. Growth comes in phases and stages and seems to go best when being encouraged by others and earnestly focused on by self. As the development of muscular strength takes the working against resistance, so it is also to some extent with intellectual and spiritual progress. The Greek word translated “increased” in the passage above is from “prokopto”, a word that -- according to W. E. Vine’s “Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words” -- literally means “to strike forward, cut forward a way, i.e., to make progress.”

Growth is sometimes met with resistance either from within ourselves or those who in some way might hamper it. Growing takes EFFORT as movement in the right direction may necessitate GOING AGAINST THE FLOW. The concept of the Greek literally meaning to “cut forward a way” made me think of the idea of BLAZING A TRAIL as in cutting through a jungle of other ideologies in order to keep progressing forward. Sometimes we have to cut away at the thick of what in the world is “falsely called ‘knowledge’” (note 1 Timothy 6:20) in order to find the truth and true path to be followed.

The “Theological Dictionary of the New Testament” (© 1964 Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans) refers to “prokopto” as having its original and primary use as that of a nautical term implying “to make headway in spite of blows.” This again alludes to the EFFORT of progressing in spite of the forces that might be against us.

Our spiritual progress will not come by coasting, but rather by a steadfast focus and sincere effort to press on in the pathway God has set before us. BLAZING A TRAIL and GOING AGAINST THE FLOW are often what are required of us to continue moving the right direction. Perhaps, as we recognize the EFFORT it takes to press on in growing in the truth, we should also be considerate of helping pave the way for others to follow. As we follow the Will of God let us be mindful of the opportunities to lead others in His Way as well. Rightfully applying God’s word -- the “sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12) -- we will be aided in continual forward progress.

Have a great day CUTTING THROUGH TO PRESS ON IN CHRIST!

Landmarks!

Landmarks! What are they and what function do they serve? Landmarks are noted as being PROMINENT IDENTIFIERS of a location. Such could be a large building, a mountain, a boundary marker of some sort, or some other structure or geographic feature either marking a location or guiding toward it. Whatever they are would be something ESTABLISHED by which locations or boundaries can be recognized. What about a moving landmark? Would such work? Would a moving landmark be helpful in finding a location or would it not rather cause one to loose their sense of direction?

As God prepared regulations to be observed before Israel went into the promised land, He commanded…

“YOU SHALL NOT MOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR’S LANDMARK, WHICH THE MEN OF OLD HAVE SET, in the inheritance that you will hold in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.” (Deuteronomy 19:14 ESV)

Some translations refer to the “landmark” as a “boundary stone.” Those landmarks were to mark the boundary of the inheritance each family would hand down to subsequent generations; boundaries that were to be consider permanently ESTABLISHED. Anyone who did move one was cursed. (Deuteronomy 27:17) Solomon also addressed this prohibition. (Proverbs 22:28; 23:10) Then during the time of Hosea we read a charge against the leaders of Judah as being “like those who move the landmark.” (Hosea 5:10 ESV)

If it was that important with regard to property, how much more with regard to God’s boundaries ESTABLISHED by His commands for living. We have no right to move them to either become more restrictive (a Pharisaic approach of adding rules and regulations and other doctrines of man as Jesus noted in Matthew 15:7-9) or provide more room for what self desires (perhaps the idea of continuing to sin that grace may abound as Paul mentioned in Romans 6:1-2).

One day this past week, an individual who has apparently observed my regular walking around our community said, “You are a landmark; a moving landmark in this town.” This comment was made as I was passing a landmark in our community; our historic county courthouse (completed in 1892). To be easily IDENTIFIED may be a good thing, but a “moving landmark” is not necessarily a good description for a life. An ESTABLISHED one, yes! A moving one, no! A constantly shifting life does not provide any more direction for others than a landmark that is constantly moving. Perhaps the description of such individuals would be those Paul noted as being “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine.” (Ephesians 4:14 ESV)

How can we be the best landmark by which people can be aided in finding their way? In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he exhorted the Christians there to “continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel.” (Colossians 1:23 ESV) Then a little further in this letter he urged…

“(6) Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, (7) ROOTED and BUILT UP IN HIM and ESTABLISHED IN THE FAITH, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:6-7 ESV)

Let us each seek for our life to be so ESTABLISHED that it serves as an immoveable landmark for those seeking the Way of God. May the wisdom of His Will be seen in the consistency of where we stand in life.

Have a great day STANDING TALL ON LIFE’S LANDSCAPE FOR CHRIST!

Key To Development!

MATURING is not an instant thing that simply happens to occur at a certain age, but is rather a process we go through in life. If it were merely age that marked MATURITY there would be no immature adults in our society, but sadly that is not the case. There is no pill or injection to provide it. There is no potion to mix up and drink for it to be gained. Though accidents may teach us some valuable lessons, maturity doesn’t happen by itself. The process of MATURING begins in youth, continues into adulthood, and we need to remain open to that which most helps to provide it.

In the Psalms we read…
“(9) HOW CAN A YOUNG MAN KEEP HIS WAY PURE? BY GUARDING IT ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD. (10) With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!”” (Psalm 119:9-10 ESV)

Whether we are addressing young men or young women, the truth is the same. God’s commands are to play a significant role in the MATURING process. If they don’t, the influence for living will come from liberal secular education, world ideologies, and peer pressure. Parents have a responsibility to make sure this element is included in all the stages of their children’s development, even with what is begun to be heard at infancy. However, we each have a personal responsibility to seek it as well.

Note the psalmist did not leave the focus of this need with youth. He went on to acknowledge his own need for wholeheartedly seeking God’s commands in order to guard against wandering from them. The need is the same for every age and is vital for MATURING as God would have us. God has provided through His Word -- and the true teachers of it -- for the opportunity to MATURE with the goal being toward “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” and thus “no longer be children.” (Ephesians 4:13-14 ESV) May we continue MATURING with that ultimate goal in mind.

Have a great day GROWING BY THE MEASURE THAT MATTERS!

Filed Away!

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what then is an empty desk?” [source” bulletin clipping] Perhaps an implication to think about! When I visit people who are getting up there in years and they comment on their difficulty of remembering things, I often remark this difficulty is only because of how much they have filed away in their MIND over all the years they have lived. Just like a full file cabinet, it takes a while to finger through the files to find the information for which one is searching.

Perhaps our thoughts sometimes get a bit jumbled. As each day passes there are new experiences and bits of information that accumulate. Still, we should recognize what a marvelous creation of God the brain is; transferring signals throughout the body in microseconds and having a capacity for storing a great deal of information. We may even at times be amazed at how quickly some of that information is retrieved. However, we should be concerned with what we are filing away in our MIND. It needs to be filled with something (and we are doing so), but if we are cluttering it up with the wrong stuff our life is going to get bogged down and become misdirected!

A psalmist declared…
“I HAVE STORED UP YOUR WORD IN MY HEART, THAT I MIGHT NOT SIN AGAINST YOU” (Psalm 119:11)

Obviously the psalmist understood that what was “STORED UP” within would have a direct impact on the actions of his life. The STORING UP to which he referred is filing that needs to be done on a daily basis. Such regularity will enhance our ability to retrieve the information as it is most needed.

Paul urged…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

Are such “file folders” present and being filled in our MIND? Whatever it is we are drawing in and STORING AWAY is what we will unsurprisingly find ourselves drawing from. May we continue to seek the guidance of God to guard against clutter and bring Divine order to our life.

Have a great day MAINTAINING GOD’S WILL IN THE TOP DRAWER!

What Prompts The Singing?

Why do people sing? Singing seems to be a part of just about every culture. And why do those who don’t necessarily have a voice for singing, sing anyway? Is it perhaps because they simply can’t help it; the song just naturally wells up from within?

A few days ago as I was serving through the night as a volunteer monitor at our local community winter shelter for homeless individuals, the other monitor asked me if I was singing a particular song. We were in the process of getting things around for breakfast and I didn’t even realize I was softly singing. Though I wasn’t really sure what song I had actually been singing to myself, the song the other night monitor suggested then became stuck in my head and they began singing as our morning tasks continued.

Singing is something that can be planned and prepared for, but also frequently occurs quite spontaneously. It can also be contagious. Singing is often prompted by a particular disposition of mind or HEART FOCUS of some kind. Is it not the HEART in which God appears to be most interested? (i.e. Joel 2:12-13)

Paul urged those at Ephesus toward…
“(19) addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, SINGING AND MAKING MELODY TO THE LORD WITH ALL YOUR HEART,” (Ephesians 5:19 ESV)

See where the emphasis rests? We need to recognize that it’s very possible for the melody or four part harmony to sound wonderful to our ears, while being nothing but noise to God. (note Amos 5:23) On the other hand, even if the pitch is not quite right, the voice has a bit of a crackle, and one may not know much about music -- when the right HEART FOCUS is behind the song -- it can still be most beautiful to God.

In Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth he stressed the concept of singing with the spirit and mind (or understanding). (1 Corinthians 14:15) What goes on within the HEART and the MIND as we sing is where the ear of God is tuned. May that reality prompt the welling up of proper praise not only in song, but in daily actions as well. In this way our whole life may become beautiful music to the God Who is the audience of every action of our being.

Have a great day SEEKING TO DELIGHT THE EYES AND EARS OF GOD!

The Son!

[01/09/2008 “teEn-MAIL”]
[Note: The original author of the following story is unknown. Perhaps you have already received it as a forwarded e-mail as it has been circulating for at least eleven years. Following the story I have included a short Scripture passage and point regarding the blessing that is or can be ours! -- Carl]

[This focus was originally sent 19/13/1998 (Edited some with passage changed to ESV)]

THE SON!

Years ago, there was a very wealthy man who, with his devoted young son, shared a passion for art collecting. Together they traveled around the world, adding only the finest art treasures to their collection. Priceless works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and many others adorned the walls of the family estate. The widowed, elder man looked on with satisfaction as his only child became an experienced art collector. The son’s trained eye and sharp business mind caused his father to beam with pride as they dealt with art collectors around the world.

As winter approached, war engulfed the nation, and the young man left to serve his country. After only a few short weeks, his father received a telegram. His beloved son was missing in action. The art collector anxiously awaited more news, fearing he would never see his son again.

Within days, his fears were confirmed. The young man had died while rushing a fellow soldier to a medic. Distraught and lonely, the old man faced the upcoming Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the season, a season that he and his son had so looked forward to, would visit his house no longer. On Christmas morning, a knock on the door awakened the depressed old man. As he walked to the door, the masterpieces of art on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home. As he opened the door, he was greeted by a soldier with a large package in his hand. He introduced himself by saying, “I was a friend of your son. I was the one he was rescuing when he died. May I come in for a few moments? I have something to show you.”

As the two began to talk, the soldier told of how the man’s son had told everyone of his, as well as his father’s, love of fine art. “I’m an artist,” said the soldier, “and I want to give you this.” As the old man unwrapped the package, the paper gave way to reveal a portrait of the man’s son. Though the world would never consider it the work of a genius, the painting featured the young man’s face in striking detail. Overcome with emotion, the man thanked the soldier, promising to hang the picture above the fireplace.

A few hours later, after the soldier had departed, the old man set about his task. True to his word, the painting went above the fireplace, pushing aside thousands of dollars of paintings. And then the man sat in his chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given.

During the days and weeks that followed, the man realized that even though his son was no longer with him, the boy’s life would live on because of those he had touched. He would soon learn that his son had rescued dozens of wounded soldiers before a bullet stilled his caring heart. As the stories of his son’s gallantry continued to reach him, fatherly pride and satisfaction began to ease the grief.

The painting of his son soon became his most prized possession, far eclipsing any interest in the pieces for which museums around the world clamored. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received.

The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away. The art world was in anticipation! Unmindful of the story of the man’s only son, but in his honor, those paintings would be sold at an auction. According to the will of the old man, all of the art works would be auctioned on Christmas day, the day he had received his greatest gift.

The day soon arrived and art collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the world’s most spectacular paintings. Dreams would be fulfilled this day; greatness would be achieved as many would claim “I have the greatest collection.”

The auction began with a painting that was not on any museum’s list. It was the painting of the man’s son. The auctioneer asked for an opening bid. The room was silent. “Who will open the bidding with $100?” he asked. Minutes passed. No one spoke. From the back of the room came, “Who cares about that painting? It's just a picture of his son. Let’s forget it and go on to the good stuff.” More voices echoed in agreement. “No, we have to sell this one first,” replied the auctioneer. “Now, who will take the son?”

Finally, a friend of the old man spoke, “Will you take ten dollars for the painting? That's all I have. I knew the boy, so I’d like to have it.”

“I have ten dollars. Will anyone go higher?” called the auctioneer. After more silence, the auctioneer said, “Going once, going twice. Gone.” The gavel fell.

Cheers filled the room and someone exclaimed, “Now we can get on with it and we can bid on these treasures!”

The auctioneer looked at the audience and announced the auction was over. Stunned disbelief quieted the room. Someone spoke up and asked, “What do you mean it’s over? We didn’t come here for a picture of some old guy’s son. What about all of these paintings? There are millions of dollars of art here! I demand that you explain what’ going on here!” The auctioneer replied, “It’s very simple. According to the will of the father, whoever takes the son...gets it all.”

Just as those art collectors discovered on that Christmas day, the message is still the same: the love of a Father, a Father whose greatest joy came from His Son, who went away and gave His life rescuing others. And because of that Father’s love, whoever takes the Son, gets it all!

=======
What a powerful thought! What a glorious truth in the context of our connection to Jesus! What an immeasurable blessing is provided in that relationship.

John put it this way in the first of his three short letters:
“(11) And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (12) WHOEVER HAS THE SON HAS LIFE; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11-12 ESV)

Have a great day KNOWING THAT IF WE HAVE THE SON WE HAVE IT ALL!

Advertise Here!

“Advertise Here!” We’ve all probably seen those words on the side of a bus, the back of a city bench, a vacant billboard, or perhaps some other place. Such is an indication of space available for some business or organization to advertise their company or services. Some time ago I read of a man who was out of work who decided to shave his head in order to offer advertising space on his head where people would see it as he went about town.

Certain places may be considered unworthy for an advertisement. Companies generally want their ads placed where they are highly visible and likely to be seen by many people. They also tend to be careful with regard to what their company name becomes associated. Perhaps we feel we are surrounded by too much advertising. We pick up a newspaper and the ads fall out on the ground. We open up bills and out come advertisements from other companies. Free balloons carried by children, T-shirts with company logos, stickers, license plate frames, free pens, etc., are some of the many ways in which companies attempt to get their message out.

As much as me might disdain advertising, it is actually possible for us to be involved in it without really GIVING IT MUCH THOUGHT. Any time we wear hats, jackets, shirts, shoes, or other clothing with slogans or trademarks adorning them, we are helping advertise. Even a free pen we may have picked up somewhere that is printed with a company logo can involve us in spreading the message of the advertiser when we loan the pen to another or are simply seen using it.

The same is true about our life? What does the manner in which we live and speak advertise? As we claim to be Christians, what does our life say about Christ as we go about our daily business? When it comes to this, we ought to GIVE IT MUCH THOUGHT! If we don’t, our life will most likely become advertising space for someone else.

Paul urged those at Philippi…
“(17) Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. (18) For MANY, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, WALK AS ENEMIES OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST.” (Philippians 3:17-18 ESV)

What does our walk say? The phrasing of verse 18 from the New Living Translation [© 1997, Tyndale House] reads, “.. there are many WHOSE CONDUCT SHOWS THEY ARE REALLY ENEMIES OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST.”

Earlier in this same letter Paul exhorted…
“(27) Only LET YOUR MANNER OF LIFE BE WORTHY OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, (28) and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.” (Philippians 1:27-28 ESV)

Let us consider the manner in which we live and what it says about our Lord. With Jesus as “the Truth” (John 14:6), may there be truth in advertising through our life as we go about our day to day activities. The world is watching. Let’s help them get the message they need!

Have a great day MAKING THE ADVERTISING SPACE AVAILABLE TO CHRIST!

Under God's Microscope!

There are things that may appear just fine on the surface until they are scrutinized more closely. Looking through a microscope can be very revealing. Through the power of the lens things are brought clearly into view that are not seen with the naked eye. For example, hands that appear to be CLEAN could be covered with a host of microorganisms possessing the potential to spread disease. Simply running the hands under some water may remove the visible dirt while not being thorough enough to deal with the bacteria that remains. For our own health and the health of others (especially if we are handling food others will eat) the true condition must be acknowledged.

Jesus had encounters with people who tried to hold on to appearances, but inwardly the true story was told. He called these individuals “hypocrites” because they were mainly playing a part. Perhaps the contrast was no more evident than when the Jewish leaders were seeking to have Jesus put to death.

When Jesus was brought before Pilate we read…
“(28) Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. THEY THEMSELVES DID NOT ENTER THE GOVERNOR’S HEADQUARTERS, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT BE DEFILED, BUT COULD EAT THE PASSOVER. (29) So Pilate went outside to them and said, ‘What accusation do you bring against this man?’ (30) They answered him, ‘If this man were not doing evil, we would not have delivered him over to you.’ (31) Pilate said to them, ‘Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.’ The Jews said to him, ‘It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.’ (32) This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to show by what kind of death he was going to die.” (John 18:28-32 ESV)

These leaders were being careful to not defile themselves. They wanted to remain clean so they could participate in the celebration of the Passover. It is clear they were seeking to have Jesus put to death (note also John 19:7) and in order to do so they even went so far as to seek false witnesses to testify against Him. (Matthew 26:59) Therefore, here they were focusing on remaining “ceremonially” CLEAN while in reality they were “spiritually” unclean! Though they would not step foot into the governor’s headquarters and so defile themselves and miss the opportunity to eat the Passover, they were still intent on putting to death the Messiah, whatever it took. Ceremonially CLEAN and yet of the most defile motive and heart. No wonder Jesus -- Who could see what was truly there -- would describe them as being “like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.” (Matthew 23:27)

Are we content with how we appear to others, or do we have a genuine desire to understand what we are like under God’s microscope? Paul’s aim was to “have a CLEAR CONSCIENCE toward both God and man.” (Acts 24:16) What is truly going on within us? Are we merely playing a part or living based on a genuine desire for God’s Will to reign within? Though it may be masked to others, God knows whatever dirt is in our life. Praise God, through Christ, we can be CLEAN. However, we must also have a willingness to come CLEAN in acknowledging what is out of place in our life. May that which comes from our life do so from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith (1 Timothy 1:5) as we genuinely live to please our Lord!

Have a great day APPRECIATING THE DEEP CLEANING IN CHRIST!

Ability Has Not Diminished!

God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation. (Genesis 12:1-2) Then as time went on Abraham began to think that the heir of his estate would be his servant Eliezer. (Genesis 15:1-2) However, God made it clear to Abraham that the promise would be fulfilled through his own son to be born to him. (Genesis 15:4) Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. (Genesis 15:6) Still time went on and Abraham wondered if such could come for him at 100 years old and Sarah at 90. (Genesis 17:17) God then again affirmed that a child would be born through Abraham’s wife Sarah. (Genesis 17:19) When Abraham entertained three messengers from God, they too confirmed the promise (Genesis 18), and Sarah -- having overheard these messengers -- laughed to herself, but not without being noticed.

We read…
“(13) The LORD said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ (14) IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you about this time next year, and SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON.’” (Genesis 18:13-14 ESV)

God had not made a promise He would not keep. Neither had He made a promise He could not bring to fulfillment. Whatever God said -- as impossible as it might humanly seem -- it was NOT TOO HARD FOR THE LORD!

Do we question? Do we wonder? Do we laugh thinking it unlikely that what God has said could possibly come to be? Or do we believe God so that it can be counted as righteousness for us? Was this ability only the ability of the God of Abraham? Note what Jesus told his disciples on one occasion as He addressed the idea of the difficulty for some (namely the rich) to be saved.

We read…
“(26) But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.’” (Matthew 19:26 ESV)

Left to ourselves there may be many impossibilities. However, with God it is not the sky, but Heaven itself that is the limit. The truth remains that God can and will bring about whatever He has promised in accordance with His Sovereign Will.

Though there was a time when Paul (as Saul) had relied upon his own righteousness, he eventually learned to rely on the Lord as the true source of strength for his life. He had an UNWAVERING TRUST IN GOD regardless of the challenges he faced. Therefore Paul would boldly declare…

“(12) I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. (13) I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME.” (Philippians 4:12-13 ESV)

The world may laugh and wonder at OUR TRUST, but may those around us come to know that we truly do TRUST GOD to bring about every word He has promised. His Will shall prevail! There is NOTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD! By no means has His ability diminished with time. Like Abraham we may not understand the timetable, but we can be assured God will bring whatever He has promised to complete fulfillment!

Have a great day MARKED BY UNWAVERING TRUST IN GOD’S PROMISES!

Make One Or Accept One!

When I was born I did not choose my name, my parents gave it to me. It is a name I have accepted, by which I have become known, and to which I respond when I hear it mentioned. My full name identifies me with the family to which I belong. However, there is another sense in which some focus on their name and that is in light of a desire to make a name for themselves. Such a desire dates way back in the history of mankind.

Following the days of Noah we read…
“(1) Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. (2) And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. (3) And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. (4) Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and LET US MAKE A NAME FOR OURSELVES, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.’” (Genesis 11:1-4 ESV)

This desire to keep from being dispersed was in direct violation of God’s command to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth. (Genesis 9:1 & 7) Perhaps even today when the focus is on making a name for oneself, God or His Will is often left out of the picture. As we read through the pages of Scripture we find a number of times when God gave a NEW NAME to those who acknowledged Him and were striving to live in accordance with His Will. Among these we find Abram who became Abraham, Sarai who become Sarah, Jacob who became Israel, Simon who became Cephas (or Peter), and then there is Saul who at some point became known as Paul, though I am not sure of the origin of that change.

I think it’s important to note that the name of Abraham became great because God made it so. (Genesis 12:2) It is those who are willing to humbles themselves before God who will be exalted by Him. (James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6) Do we have a given name that we have accepted with humility and honor? It was prophesied that a time would come when God’s people would receive a NEW NAME. (Isaiah 62:2) In Revelation we also read of a NEW NAME for the redeemed of God. (Revelation 2:17)

Peter encouraged those to whom he wrote…
“(14) If you are insulted FOR THE NAME OF CHRIST, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. (15) But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. (16) Yet if anyone suffers AS A CHRISTIAN, let him not be ashamed, but let him GLORIFY GOD IN THAT NAME.” (1 Peter 4:14-16 ESV)

The name “Christian” is a name that associates and identifies one with Christ! Though this name may have arisen as a derogatory designation (Acts 11:26) it was accepted as a badge of honor. People are not Christians because they are living good lives, but because they belong to Christ! Being a Christian identifies us with Christ and with the family of God as we wear HIS NAME and live to glorify Him! May we humbly accept HIS NAME and whatever comes with it as we live thankful to God to belong to His family.

Have a great day GLORYING IN WHAT CHRIST MAKES OF US!

Known By The Fruit!

A fruit tree. What makes it significant? Is it where it has been planted? Is it how strong and tall it looks? Is it simply because it is standing among quality fruit trees? Is it because of the claim of whose orchard it is in? Is it not rather the character of its own fruit that tells us something about the goodness of tree? Is that not what Jesus declared to be true with regard to a life as well? (i.e. Matthew 7:15-20)

We may have the privilege of growing up in a Christian home. We may be seen to be a regular attender of church services. It is possible to be noted for generously supporting the work of the church with our money. We may even focus on the fact we have been immersed into Christ. However, though all of that is good and proper, what does the fruit of our LIFE GENUINELY CONVEY?

As John the Baptist was preparing the way for Christ’s ministry -- announcing the need for repentance in view of the kingdom being close at hand -- people from all walks of life came to him for baptism. Among these were even some of the Jewish leaders. A good thing, right? However, why were they coming and what would their LIFE REVEAL?

We read…
“(7) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? (8) BEAR FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE. (9) And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. (10) Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.’” (Matthew 3:7-10 ESV)

John focused away from their heritage to have them seriously consider the essence of their individual lives. Were they open to changes that needed to be made? Were they truly submissive to the Will of God even though it was His commands they claimed to teach? Were they coming only because it seemed to be the thing to do or were they GENUINELY ready to make the changes necessary that would make their lives compatible with the coming kingdom of Christ?

How about us? Have we merely focused on “religious” activity and being numbered among those who gather for worship or is our life in a continual STATE OF BECOMING what Christ would have us to be as a member of His body? To be in His body means we must recognize His authority as the Head of it and therefore surrender our will to His! May the fruit of GENUINENESS become MORE AND MORE EVIDENT in our daily life as we seek for the essence of our Lord to take over every aspect of our being.

Have a great day BEING RAISED UP BY GOD’S WILL TO BE HIS CHILD!

Falling Or Rising To The Occasion!

Causes and civilizations may come and go for various reasons. Some are overpowered from without. Others may crumble from within due to actions -- or the lack there of -- that bring instability. Perhaps one of the greatest powers that can self-inflict the resulting demise of a cause or people is apathy; no longer CARING for others or what is going on in general. An individual by the name of William Schlamm is quoted as suggesting the following epitaph for our society: “This civilization died because it didn’t want to be bothered.” [original source unknown]

Not wanting to be bothered! How often have we felt that way when someone needed our help? Perhaps we were wearied from having done it before and here they were again. Certainly we should be mindful of truly helping rather than merely enabling others to have no desire to change their situation. However, how many times have we called upon God (or others) for the very same thing?

Have we ever heard someone respond to another, “Go tell someone who cares”? Do those words not convey the sentiment of not wanting to be bothered? If some has to go searching for “someone who cares” where will such people be found? Will we be one of them?

Peter encouraged…
“(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of GOD so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (7) casting all your anxieties on him, because HE CARES FOR YOU.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV)

Praise God He genuinely CARES! GOD CARED enough to send His Son to save us from our sins. JESUS CARED enough to endure the cross on our behalf. The APOSTLES CARED enough to endure persecution to bring the truth of eternal life to others. And the early CHURCH CARED enough for others that they didn’t consider what they possessed to be their own (Acts 4:32) but were even willing to sell possessions in order to help “as any had need.” (Acts 2:45)

Is this a godly and Christ-like characteristic that is being instilled in our life? Humbling ourselves before God as Peter urged should not only help maintain our connection to the BLESSED CARE of God, but also cause us to be CARING toward others because we won’t be overly caught up in our own selves.

James exhorted…
“(26) If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. (27) RELIGION THAT IS PURE AND UNDEFILED BEFORE GOD, THE FATHER, IS THIS: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1:26-27 ESV)

Doesn’t that sound like caring? Being mindful of others and their situation! The religious life God wants us to embrace is not only a holy thing, but is also to be practical for daily living. How we treat others says something about how we view God and the sense of appreciation we have for all He has provided for our life. If we think we are religious, is it being made evident by how much we genuinely CARE about others? The amazing thing about genuinely CARING is that it usually takes the “bother” out of service and replaces it with the joy of having the opportunity to be used in service to the glory of God. May we CARE enough to be the best help we can be to those around us.

Have a great day MINDFUL OF MODELING THE LORD’S COMPASSION!

Awake To The Facts!

Though yesterday was the beginning of a new year, for me it was a fairly normal Tuesday, at least for the most part. The day was marked on the calendar as a national holiday, but it was also my usual day off, so I began with my customary morning Bible reading as I sipped coffee and had some breakfast before heading out on my typical long Tuesday morning walk. Heading out about 6:15 a.m., it was still quite dark and since most people had probably stayed up late to bring in the new year there was not much traffic nor many houses with the lights on. So while the community slept and I walked, I witnessed what they were asleep to; another glorious sunrise coming up over the Cascade mountain range. Admiring the awesome colors in the sky and thanking God for the new day He was bringing alive, I began singing the hymn “OUR GOD REIGNS” as I walked on.

Being the first day of the year, my morning Bible reading was once again at the beginning of the Old and New Testaments. Reading through the first three chapters of Genesis I was once again reminded of the history of God’s Creation, the beginning of life, but also the first sign of sin raising its head even in the midst of the paradise God had created. Then I read through the first chapter of Matthew where I was reminded of God’s plan down through the generations for the coming of the Messiah -- the solution to man’s dilemma created by sin. Praise God for His gracious provision in Christ.

Just as many in our community yesterday morning were asleep to the rising of the sun, so there are many oblivious to the fact they need to wake up to their need for the RISEN SON. What does the RISEN SON mean to us? Perhaps to answer that we should consider what it is that is REIGNING in our life?

Writing to the church at Rome, Paul urged…
“LET NOT SIN THEREFORE REIGN in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions.” (Romans 6:12 ESV)

The Greek used by Paul implies the literal idea of not letting sin be king! What is it that REIGNS over our life? What kingdom rule has established itself on the throne of our heart? What we bow to and obey reveals the reality of what that is. Sadly, too many have allowed the flesh to REIGN instead of the grace of God that leads to eternal life. (Romans 5:21)

Paul went on to exhort…
“(13) Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but PRESENT YOURSELVES TO GOD AS THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BROUGHT FROM DEATH TO LIFE, and your members to God as INSTRUMENTS FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (14) For SIN WILL HAVE NO DOMINION over you, since you are not under law BUT UNDER GRACE.” (Romans 6:13-14 ESV)

Because the Son of God ROSE TO REIGN over a kingdom of which “there will be no end” (Luke 1:33), let us continue to submit to His SOVEREIGN RULE. It is only in the realm of His KINGDOM that we will find the hope of a glorious eternity.

Have a great day UNDER THE
