Oh Where Oh Where!
How quick the year 2007 seems to have passed by. However, that is what time does; it continues to move by second by second, hour by hour, day by day, etc., and must be used while we have it because time cannot be recycled. We may look back with frustration or sadness at opportunities missed and may rejoice over fruitful labors in which involvement was shared. Both should serve as reminders and encouragers as we look toward a New Year that God may or may not choose to provide.
James exhorted…
“(13) Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’ -- (14) yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. (15) Instead you ought to say, ‘IF THE LORD WILLS, WE WILL LIVE AND DO THIS OR THAT.’ (16) As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. (17) So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:13-17 ESV)
The reality of the shortness and uncertainty relating to life in this realm ought to cause us to give serious consideration with regard to our priorities and the opportunities of today and whatever tomorrows God will provide. Perhaps a prayer to begin each new day 2008 may offer might be, “Lord, if YOU WILL to provide this new day, I WILL accept it and use it for YOUR WILL to be done here on earth as it is in Heaven.”
May our activities and labors of each day bring glory and honor to the Lord Who has sought us, bought us, and made us His Own as we live with a life perspective that declares “TO LIVE IS CHRIST, AND TO DIE IS GAIN.” (Philippians 1:21 ESV)

Nearer And Nearer!
A new year is just two days away. With each hour that passes it draws nearer. A new year is often seen as a chance for new beginnings with renewed resolve to do things better and new opportunities with which to become involved. A coming new year is also generally viewed with a sense of hopefulness which is how we ought to gratefully accept each new day God provides.
When the Scriptures refer to our SALVATION, they do so in terms that God our Savior has “SAVED US” (Titus 3:5), “in this hope we WERE SAVED” (Romans 8:24), and that we are “OBTAINING the outcome of your faith, THE SALVATION OF YOUR SOULS.” (1 Peter 1:9). Because of the continuing relationship we have in Christ we can presently know we HAVE BEEN and ARE PRESENTLY SAVED as we live with the assurance in Christ that we WILL BE SAVED. Stepping into each new day the Lord provides (and praise God He gives us life measured out in daily doses), we do so awaiting the complete fulfillment of that SALVATION when we are finally delivered from this realm into the glorious eternity of Heaven.
Writing to the church at Rome, Paul encouraged…
“Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For SALVATION IS NEARER TO US NOW THAN WHEN WE FIRST BELIEVED.” (Romans 13:11 ESV)
Each day of walking in the Lord brings that reality of complete and final SALVATION closer than when we first believed and obeyed the Gospel of Jesus. Nearer and getting still nearer! May we continue to press on with the assurance of HAVING BEEN SAVED, thus knowing we ARE SAVED, and trusting His Sovereign power in which we will ultimately BE SAVED! Praise God it is steadily growing closer! May we reach out to others that they too may share the same hope!
Have a great day CONTINUING THE FORWARD MOVEMENT IN CHRIST!

Peace And Prayer!
Sometimes people struggle to make ENDS meet. Then there are ENDS they don’t want to meet. However, a reality of life in this realm is that there are ENDS and there will be an END. Not knowing the how and when regarding ENDS is sometimes a source of great apprehension. What should we do in the face of the unknown?
Peter exhorted…
“The end of all things is at hand; therefore BE SELF-CONTROLLED AND SOBER-MINDED FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR PRAYERS.” (1 Peter 4:7 ESV)
Though Peter used the Greek word “sophroneo” (sober-minded or of sound mind), he also used the Greek word translated “self-controlled” which is from “nepho” that “signifies to be free from the influence of intoxicants” [source: “W. E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary Of N.T. Words”] or as Strong’s lexicon suggests it signifies being “calm and collected in spirit.” Is that the spirit or result associated with our prayers to God in the face of unknowns as we look to the One Who does know?
With regard to the things God will bring to COMPLETION and an END, we should pray and not be fearful, because of our relationship with Him through Christ. Jesus came and gave Himself, conquering death and therefore destroying the one who has the power of death (the devil), in order to save and deliver us from the fear of death. (Hebrews 2:14-15)
The church at Smyrna was encouraged…
“DO NOT FEAR WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SUFFER. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. BE FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH, AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE CROWN OF LIFE.” (Revelation 2:10 ESV)
Faithful to the END! That needs to be our aim! Let us pray to the END that God will provide us with the resolve and strength necessary to endure whatever we might face in this realm as we remember that the END of one thing is often the beginning of something else. The END is not the END (whether it be our death or our Lord’s return), for in Christ we can joyfully anticipate an eternity with Him. May we therefore in a calm and collected spirit pray as we trust His power to bring us through life’s challenges and ultimately deliver us into His eternal kingdom above.
Have a great day OF CALMING COMMUNICATION THROUGH CHRIST!

Not An Option!
There are situations in life where some try to remain uninvolved because they do not want to have to choose sides. However, such is not always avoidable. There are choices that have to be made whether others like the choice we’ve made or not. Trying to please all the people around us all of the time would not only cause us to go crazy from the pressure, it is also impossible because there are many who choose what they want rather than that which is right. Also, trying to walk the line of being “politically correct” is sometimes far from being “Biblically correct”! There are not only absolutes with regard to spiritual matters, but in other areas of life as well and we need to have a willingness to stand with that which is right! Though we may like options -- and options should always be wisely considered -- there are times when we have to face the reality there is ONLY ONE CHOICE to be made!
Consider Pilate for a moment. He was a reluctant participant in the trial of Jesus. However, he had political ambitions to hold on to. (note Luke 23:12; John 19:12) Therefore Pilate -- though he had the power to release the one he himself noted as being innocent and not deserving of death (Luke 23:4, 13-16, 22) -- tried to rest the situation in the lap of others.
We read…
“(24) So when PILATE saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he TOOK WATER AND WASHED HIS HANDS BEFORE THE CROWD, saying, ‘I AM INNOCENT OF THIS MAN’S BLOOD; SEE TO IT YOURSELVES.’” (Matthew 27:24 ESV)
Though Pilate tried to remain NEUTRAL by washing his hands of the situation, he still made a choice that led to our Lord’s crucifixion. We know it was the plan of God, but Pilate still played a part and delivered Jesus over to be crucified. (Matthew 27:26)
When it comes to Jesus, NEUTRALITY is not an option! Jesus holds such significance for both life now and for eternity that there is ONLY ONE TRUE CHOICE! Jesus Himself made that clear when He stated…
“(30) Whoever is NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME, and whoever DOES NOT GATHER WITH ME SCATTERS.” (Matthew 12:30 ESV)
Jesus provided no ground for NEUTRALITY here! He gave no other options. He stated unequivocally it is one or the other!
At a time during our Lord’s public ministry when many who had followed turned to follow no more (John 6:66), Jesus turned and asked the disciples a question we too ought to consider every day of our life. I love the response Peter gave on this occasion because of the firm choice it represents.
We read…
“(67) So Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?’ (68) Simon Peter answered him, ‘LORD, TO WHOM SHALL WE GO? You have the words of eternal life, (69) and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.’” (John 6:67-69 ESV)
Peter in essence seemed to say that Jesus was the ONLY CHOICE! There was no one else to whom they could go for eternal life! At this crossroads in life, while many chose to depart, Peter unashamedly and unmistakably made the ONLY ONE TRUE CHOICE and that was to continue following Jesus.
We must make a concrete decision with regard to what we are going to do with Jesus because some day we will be faced with Jesus making the decision of what to do with us! (i.e. 2 Corinthians 5:9-10) What do we profess? What does our life activity declare? There is no NEUTRAL position to take!
Jesus exhorted…
“(32) So everyone WHO ACKNOWLEDGES ME before men, I ALSO WILL ACKNOWLEDGE before my Father who is in heaven, (33) but WHOEVER DENIES ME before men, I ALSO WILL DENY before my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 10:32-33 ESV)
Sounds fair enough, doesn’t it? NEUTRALITY is not an option! A choice must be made. However, to consider the options there is really ONLY ONE TRUE CHOICE to be made! Our definitive choice for Jesus is a choice for us as well. May we sincerely acknowledge the reality there is no where else to turn other than to Him!
Have a great day KNOWING TO CHOOSE CHRIST IS TO CHOOSE LIFE!

Life's Master Model! (part 8)
When we consider great examples of SERVICE, perhaps we think of those willing to give the ultimate sacrifice; their very life. These individuals are heralded as heroes and we know our own Lord was willing to give Himself in that way on our behalf. However, the essence of a truly GREAT SERVANT is seen in the willingness to do a very broad range of things for others. Perhaps, like the twelve disciples, we have been slow to gain this proper perspective. (note the discussion from Mark 9:33-37 that was closely followed by similar discussion in Mark 10:35-45) Focusing our attention on the life of Jesus we should notice that the variableness of levels of SERVICE is where His example shone so brightly. The particular example of GOODNESS we will consider today from the life of Jesus is one we have already noted several times this year. (see “teEn-MAIL” focuses of 04/05/2007, 05/01/2007, and 10/31/2007) May we recognize how worthy it is of continual reflection.
John recorded…
“(3) Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, (4) ROSE FROM SUPPER. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. (5) Then he poured water into a basin and BEGAN TO WASH THE DISCIPLES’ FEET and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (John 13:3-5 ESV)
Perhaps for most of us, once we have sat down to eat we prefer not to have that plan interrupted. What we are willing to get up for on behalf of others reveals our genuine interest in SERVING them. That is unless we do so grumbling and muttering.
Dropping down a few verses we continue the reading…
“(12) When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I HAVE DONE TO YOU? (13) You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. (14) IF I then, your LORD and TEACHER, HAVE WASHED your feet, YOU ALSO OUGHT TO WASH one another’s feet. (15) For I HAVE GIVEN YOU AN EXAMPLE, THAT YOU ALSO SHOULD DO JUST AS I HAVE DONE to you.” (John 13:12-15 ESV)
Jesus wasn’t seeking to have the disciples wash His feet, but to be willing to wash each other’s. They rightly acknowledged their Lord’s position. However, when they looked at each other they may have still been wondering where they individually fit into the “pecking order” under Jesus as His chosen ones. If this was the case, whatever they did could have become a reflection on the position they wanted to maintain in the eyes of the others. Even though they were receiving special power and position in Christ’s mission of seeking and saving the lost, they were not to view themselves as being above such SERVICE. As their Lord and Teacher, Jesus humbly exemplified the greatness of a GOOD SERVANT.
Peter struggled with allowing the Lord to wash his feet. (John 13:8-9) However, He eventually understood the concept of possessing the FREEDOM TO SERVE and urged others toward it.
We read…
“(15) For this is the will of God, that BY DOING GOOD you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. (16) LIVE AS PEOPLE WHO ARE FREE, not USING YOUR FREEDOM as a cover-up for evil, but LIVING AS SERVANTS OF GOD.” (1 Peter 2:15-16 ESV)
When Jesus -- in His Sovereign greatness -- was so willing to SERVE even in menial ways, why should we even think of refusing? No SERVICE that is needed should be seen as being below us. With all our privileges in Christ and the freedom that is ours because of Him, one of our greatest freedoms is that of SERVING others. May that spirit of Christ become more and more evident in our daily life!
Have a great day RECOGNIZING SERVICE AS A GOOD GIFT TO FREELY GIVE!

Life's Master Model! (part 7)
One of the things necessary for life is LIGHT. Sometimes there is the need for a little more LIGHT. To have a GOOD LIGHT with which to read (for the enlightenment of our mind) or find our way (without stumbling or getting lost) ought to be appreciated and even more so when we are talking about our Christian walk.
When John was introducing the Messiah in the first chapter of his Gospel, we read…
“(4) In him was life, and the life was THE LIGHT OF MEN. (5) The LIGHT SHINES in the darkness, and the DARKNESS HAS NOT OVERCOME IT.” (John 1:4-5 ESV)
That is a picture of GOOD LIGHT. It is also the picture of POWERFUL LIGHT! We still have the benefit of HIS LIGHT (1 John 1:7) because even though we may be surrounded by darkness in this world, that darkness is not powerful enough to overcome HIS LIGHT!
Jesus acknowledged this role Himself where we read…
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the LIGHT OF LIFE.’” (John 8:12 ESV)
Jesus told His disciples that as long as He was here in this world, He was its LIGHT. (John 9:5) He also urged them to continue walking while they had the LIGHT with them so that they would not be overtaken by the darkness. (John 12:35-36) Jesus’ LIGHT enlightened in a manner that helped to dispel the darkness of ignorance as He again and again stated, “You have heard that it was said…. But I say to you….” (Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28, 31-32, 33-34, 38-39, 43-44 ESV) and the Will of God was made clear.
Now that He has ascended we must be mindful of keeping our life in line with Him so that we can reflect HIS LIGHT to this dark world. This is the role Jesus taught belongs to us as His followers.
Jesus stated…
(14) YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (16) In the same way, LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 ESV)
Yes, we need to LET IT SHINE! As long as we are in this world we need to keep the LIGHT SHINING! May our life, like Jesus, help dispel the darkness around us as the enlightenment we have received from the Lord transcends our life to help guide those around us to Him.
Have a great day LIGHTING YOUR WORLD!

Life's Master Model! (part 6)
Today there are many who claim that religion and politics should not mix. However, don’t most people voice their political opinions based upon their personal sense of values, whether those values acknowledge God or not? If Christianity is our life can it be any other way? Or are we guilty of divorcing our Christianity from certain segments of life?
We may have no desire to run for public office, but we still should be mindful of living as GOOD CITIZENS. Though God’s commands should always be held above those set in place by man (note Acts 5:29), living as upright members of our society has the potential to reveal Christians are truly a benefit to society.
Luke revealed how Jesus’ earthly parents’ followed the regulations of the land. Submitting to the decree of Caesar Augustus for all within the borders of his power to register in their own town is what brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem at the time of our Lord’s birth. (Luke 2:1-7) Jesus grew up in the home of a family who observed the commands of God and followed the laws of the land. So, where was Jesus on the subject?
There was an occasion when Peter was asked if his “teacher” paid the half-shekel tax and Peter responded, “Yes.” (Matthew 17:24-25) Peter’s response strikes me that he assumed the compliance of Jesus with existing rules and regulations that served to sustain the powers that be in this life. Upon arriving at a house, Jesus addressed the subject with Peter as follows.
We read…
(25) … And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, ‘What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?’ (26) And when he said, ‘From others,’ Jesus said to him, ‘Then the sons are free. (27) However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. TAKE THAT AND GIVE IT TO THEM FOR ME AND FOR YOURSELF.’” (Matthew 17:25-27 ESV)
Peter was right! Jesus paid! The Son of God set the example!
The subject of taxes arose again on one of the occasions when there was an attempt to trap Jesus in what He taught. The question raised had to do with whether or not it was right to pay taxes to Caesar. (Matthew 22:15-17) Note Jesus’ marvelous response.
“(18) But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? (19) Show me the coin for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. (20) And Jesus said to them, ‘Whose likeness and inscription is this?’ (21) They said, ‘Caesar’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Therefore RENDER TO CAESAR THE THINGS THAT ARE CAESAR’S, AND TO GOD THE THINGS THAT ARE GOD’S.’” (Matthew 22:18-21 ESV)
What was due was to be given to whom it was due! We may rightfully acknowledge that the governments of men are far from perfect, but they serve their purpose in maintaining a sense of order and there is support that GOOD CITIZENS will provide. (note Romans 13:1-7) Therefore we are called upon to be respectful and pay the taxes that are due. Paul noted this obligation as being both for the sake of our own conscience and to avoid coming under the wrath of God.
Though we ought to acknowledge our true and lasting CITIZENSHIP as being in Heaven (Philippians 3:20), let us be mindful of exemplifying the GOODNESS of Christ-likeness while living where we are presently. The day will come when we will be granted a completely tax free eternal inheritance!
Have a great day LIVING AN UPRIGHT LIFE TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Life's Master Model! (part 5)
FRIENDS. We need them. We need GOOD ones. We need ones that can be counted on and we need to be that kind of FRIEND to others as well. Aren’t we thankful we have a GOOD FRIEND like Jesus? As we read through the Gospels it doesn’t take long to realize how Jesus was a FRIEND to the downcast and friendless. They needed a FRIEND. However, some of the Jewish leaders were quite disturbed (Matthew 9:11) by some of the associations Jesus was drawn toward or to which He was open to their drawing near.
Matthew recorded…
“(18) For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ (19) The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, A FRIEND OF TAX COLLECTORS AND SINNERS!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.” (Matthew 11:19-20 ESV)
Why would Jesus become a “FRIEND” to such? When some of the Pharisees stated their wonder regarding those with whom Jesus chose to eat, He replied…
“(12) But when he heard it, he said, ‘Those who are well have no NEED OF A PHYSICIAN, but THOSE WHO ARE SICK. (13) Go and learn what this means, ‘I DESIRE MERCY, and not sacrifice.’ For I CAME not TO CALL the righteous, but SINNERS.’” (Matthew 9:12-13 ESV)
Yes, in Jesus actions wisdom was revealed. Though He was the one in the rightful position to condemn, he chose to be merciful while still directing away from sin. (i.e. John 8:1-11) On an occasion when Jesus was the invited guest in the home of a Pharisee, this host was shocked that He allowed a certain woman to even touch Him; one who came in and began washing the Lord’s feet with her tears and drying them with her hair. However, Jesus told a parable to teach this Pharisee a lesson about forgiveness and love and then complimented this woman’s faith. (Luke 7:36-50)
What kind of FRIEND are we to others who are in need of a GOOD one? How closely do our actions toward others reflect the graciousness of our Lord? One way to reveal to Jesus how much we appreciate HIS FRIENDSHIP is to be that kind of FRIEND to others. Such action reveals a sense of value in other’s lives and may be the very thing that will work to draw them to Jesus.
Have a great day ALLOWING CHRIST’S MERCY TO TOUCH THROUGH US?

Life's Master Model! (part 4)
In a world that does not always treat others kindly, we may find ourselves struggling with responding in a Christ-like manner. However, we are not alone in feeling the brunt of the world’s attacks. Jesus faced them again and again. Since He was treated in such a manner, Jesus told His disciples they would experience the same thing as they held to their relationship with Him. (John 15:18-19; 16:1-4) Those to whom Peter wrote were also exhorted to not be surprised by such treatment because it came with the territory of being a Christian. (1 Peter 4:12-16)
If we are going to be Christ-like, as we read through the Gospels we should take note of how He RESPONDED. First of all, what did Jesus teach on the subject?
Jesus encouraged…
“(43) You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ (44) But I say to you, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES AND PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU, (45) so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matthew 5:43-45 ESV)
Loving and praying for! That is something we have to choose to do because it usually goes against our inclination when we are being mistreated. So, how did Jesus exemplify it?
When Jesus was being arrested we read…
“(50) And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. (51) But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And HE TOUCHED HIS EAR AND HEALED HIM.” (Luke 22:50-51 ESV)
And at the time of His crucifixion we read…
“(33) And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. (34) And Jesus said, ‘FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, for they know not what they do.’ And they cast lots to divide his garments.” (Luke 23:33-34 ESV)
Jesus had the ability and the right to retaliate in the most powerful manner, but He withheld that power and was submissive to the plan. Rather than even allowing others to fight for Him, He chose to offer kindness toward this servant who came out with the others to arrest Him. Oh, how I would love to know what continued to go through that man’s mind every time he looked in the mirror to shave and saw the ear that had been cut off and then healed. Also, the One Who goes before the Father on our behalf (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 9:24), prayed for those who sent Him to the cross.
Jesus RESPONDED to evil WITH GOOD because others needed to come to know the GOODNESS of God and His Will! As we consider the graciousness of God toward us, we should be willing to extend it to others as well, even making them the subject of our prayers. May we, like Christ, entrust ourselves to the Father “who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23), trusting Him to work things out according to His plan.
Have a great day EXERCISING THE GODLY POWER OF GOODNESS!

Life's Master Model! (part 3)
As Jesus “WENT ABOUT DOING GOOD” (Acts 10:38), He encountered people in all kinds of conditions. There were those who were weak physically and others who were weak spiritually. There were some who were physically blind (John 9:1-7) and others spiritually blind. (John 9:40-41) It mattered not whether the infirmity was physical or spiritual, Jesus had the power to BRING HEALING, provided there was willingness to accept.
On one occasion, when Jesus met a man who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years sitting by the pool of Bethesda. We read…
“(6) When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, ‘DO YOU WANT TO BE HEALED?’ (7) The sick man answered him, ‘Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.’ (8) Jesus said to him, ‘Get up, take up your bed, and walk.’ (9) And AT ONCE THE MAN WAS HEALED, and he took up his bed and walked.” (John 5:6-9) ESV)
Perhaps this man had become more comfortable with his way of life than he realized. Did he truly have the desire to be healed? [note the 01/30/2007 “teEn-MAIL” focus for more on this idea.] Jesus was willing and did heal him. What a glorious kindness had been shown to this man by our Lord. However, when Jesus met him later He also exhorted him to turn from sin (John 5:14) which should be recognized as even a worse condition than being lame.
Though we do not possess the power to do all the things Jesus did, we still have it within our power to follow in His steps to BRING HEALING to the discouraged, hurting, and troubled. Directing the attention toward God’s Way by the example of our life and the words of our mouth can help bring others into the relationship that provides healing to the sin-sick soul. (note Psalms 41:4; Proverbs 3:7-8) Holding out the hope in Christ will provide others with the opportunity to receive the ULTIMATE HEALING made available through the power of His cleansing blood. Our gracious and kind words can also BRING HEALING to others. (Proverbs 12:18)
Offering whatever encouragement and support we can may ultimately serve to help others recognize God has a people who truly love and have a genuine compassion for others, just as Jesus displayed as He walked this earth. Some may accept while others reject our kindnesses, but let us continue DOING GOOD to others anyway.
Remember Paul’s exhortation to the church at Galatia where he wrote…
“(9) And LET US NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

Life's Master Model! (part 2)
How can we relate to such a marvelous model for living as Jesus? In His humanity we are provided the example of how life lived in the flesh can still be pleasing to God. Though we are not given a lot of information regarding our Lord’s early years, what is recorded is significant enough to note.
At the age of twelve we find Jesus going to Jerusalem with his earthly parents at the time of the Passover. (Luke 2:41-42) When it was time to return home, Jesus ended up being left behind sitting in the temple with some of the teachers who were amazed at His understanding as He listened and asked questions. (Luke 2:43-47) In association with these events, Luke provided the following short synopsis of our Lord’s beginning of those teen years.
We read…
“(49) And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I MUST BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE?’ (50) And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. (51) And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and WAS SUBMISSIVE TO THEM. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. (52) And JESUS INCREASED IN WISDOM AND IN STATURE AND IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND MAN.” (Luke 2:49-52 ESV)
Even though Jesus came into this realm as “God with us” (Matthew 1:23) and to be Savior and Lord (Luke 2:11), He still had a role within the parameters of a family unit. (Matthew 13:55-56) As a youth we see Jesus maintained a GOOD FOCUS and thus exemplified an OBEDIENT CHILD being submissive to His earthly parents and accepting of spiritual instruction and practice. Day by day and year by year His growth was marked by an increase in all the areas where it ought to take place; the intellectual, physical, spiritual and social development that brings one to maturity and usefulness in life.
May we always seek to maintain the GOOD FOCUS that marked not only the youthful development of our Lord, but also His fulfillment of the Father’s plan through Him. In this way we will likewise be the best help to others (within the parameters of our immediate family, church family, community, and world) and bring the greatest glory and honor to God.
Have a great day MATURING LIKE THE MASTER!

Life's Master Model! (part 1)
Though page after page can be written to provide a biographical view of the life of individuals, sometimes those biographies have been summed up quite beautifully in just a few words. Such expressions usually refer to the character displayed or impact their life has had on those among whom they lived. These words may also mark the LEGACY that becomes a part of the life of those encouraged by their example.
As Peter was sharing the Gospel of Jesus with Cornelius and his household, before pointing to the crucified Christ and the forgiveness of sins that can be received in His Name (Acts 10:39-43), Peter summed up the life of Jesus by stating…
“(38) how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. HE WENT ABOUT DOING GOOD and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38 ESV)
GOOD is what we can expect associated with God. (note Matthew 19:17) GOODNESS is what marked the essence of our Lord’s being! Jesus was GOOD to others not because it was deserved but because it was needed and would ultimately bring glory to God. Are we not experiencing that GOODNESS?
When it was time for Jesus to come onto this life’s scene, even in His infancy there was attention drawn to GOODNESS associated with Him. As shepherds were watching their flocks in the night, they were startled by the appearing of an angel of the Lord.
We read…
“(10) And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you GOOD NEWS OF A GREAT JOY that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David A SAVIOR, who is CHRIST THE LORD.” (Luke 2:10-11 ESV)
Jesus came to earth during a time when there was definitely a need for some GOODNESS and that need remains even today. Among all the bad news there is need for “GOOD NEWS” and maintaining our focus on Jesus aids us in having it associated with our life.
Let us focus serious attention on the GOODNESS modeled by Jesus. To be remembered for DOING GOOD is a GOOD THING, is it not? Every time we read through the Gospels, may we take note of the GOODNESS of Jesus in order to model it in our own life. Having this essence in us can then help open the door of opportunity for sharing His GOOD NEWS with others as well.
Have a great day FOR GOODNESS SAKE TO GOD’S GLORY!

The Most Influential!
Have you ever pondered who it is that has had the most influence in your life? Who do you consider to have had the most impact on the world? History is filled with the names and deeds of many great men and women who impacted their societies and the world of their day. However, who’s impact has truly stood the test of time?
Consider the following: “Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50, Aristotle for 40, and Jesus for only 3. Yet the influence of Christ’s 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity. Jesus painted no pictures; yet, some of the finest paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci received their inspiration from Him. Jesus wrote no poetry; but Dante, Milton, and scores of the world’s greatest poets were inspired by Him. Jesus composed no music; still Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Bach, and Mendelssohn reached their highest perfection of melody in the hymns, symphonies, and oratories they composed in His praise. Every sphere of human greatness has been enriched by this humble Carpenter of Nazareth.” -- Henry G. Bosch [source: Tan, P. L. (1996, ©1979). Encyclopedia of 7700 illustrations, Garland TX: Bible Communications]
Though some would like to deny it, the most worthy impact JESUS CHRIST has had in the lives of men and women and children through the ages continues even today. The thing for which we must come to grips is how influential is JESUS CHRIST in our own individual life? Is He still being acknowledged as the Teacher of truth that relates to all of life in practical ways? Is He the One Who helps us picture clearly the life to be lived now and the hope we have for eternity? Is the name of JESUS CHRIST still poetry to our ears? Is He the One Who -- regardless of what we are experiencing in life -- compels a song of joy and peace and praise to well up from deep within us? Remember how Paul and Silas were able to sing hymns while in prison. (Acts 16:25) This imprisonment even opened the door for the influence of JESUS CHRIST on the Philippian jailer and his family.
In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth we read…
“(13) For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. (14) FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST CONTROLS US, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; (15) and he died for all, that THOSE WHO LIVE MIGHT NO LONGER LIVE FOR THEMSELVES BUT FOR HIM who for their sake died and was raised.” (2 Corinthians 5:13-15 ESV)
The Greek word translated “controls” (ESV) or “compel” (NKJV) is “sunechei” from “sunecho” and literally refers to “a holding together, or compressing” (“sun”, together, and “echo”, to hold) and was used of the narrowing of a way. Under the control or compelling influence of JESUS CHRIST our focus can be properly narrowed to what matters most as we no longer live for ourselves, but rather FOR HIM and His purposes!
There may be many people to whom we are thankful for the influence they presently have or have had on our life. However, may the most influential people in our life be those who are also most influenced by JESUS CHRIST! Under the control of His influence we can become the greatest influence in the lives of others as well.
Have a great day ALLOWING CHRIST’S POWER TO PREVAIL IN OUR LIFE!

A Good Read!
It is possible for someone to know a lot of facts while really knowing nothing; at least of paramount significance. Being able to recite a lot of trivia or knowing a little bit about a lot of things may impress some, but how much effort is being put into gaining the knowledge that really counts? There are millions of books one could choose from to read today. With the internet there is also an endless array of information available for perusal. Have you read some good stuff lately? Did it ENRICH your mind? Was it a focus worth TREASURING?
It has been suggest that we are what we read and it is true that what we focus on most is generally what we act upon! Is that not good reason to consider carefully what we spend the most time filling our mind?
Recently reading through Colossians the following passage caught my attention because of the terms of value used by Paul.
“(1) For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, (2) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the RICHES OF FULL ASSURANCE OF UNDERSTANDING AND the KNOWLEDGE of God’s mystery, which is Christ, (3) in whom are hidden all the TREASURES OF WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE.” (Colossians 2:1-3 ESV)
Are we living as paupers when we really ought to be living as kings because of what we know of the King of kings, Jesus Christ? It is a continual focus on our knowledge of Jesus that makes for a truly good read. It is in Him we find not just assurance or even full assurance, but the “RICHES of full assurance” as our knowledge of and focus on Him aids us in developing the ability to discern what is best and the wisdom to apply that to our daily life.
If it be true that we become what we read, let us keep reading the life of Jesus! It is a safeguard for us so that we are not led astray by other ideologies. (note vs. 4) If we truly want to be rich may we fill our mind’s vault with the TREASURES of the KNOWLEDGE of Jesus!
Have a great day APPLYING CHRIST KNOWLEDGE TO LIFE!

Rest Assured?
It is said that written around the dial of a clock in a church building in Strasburg, Germany, are these words: “One Of These Hours The Lord Is Coming.” What an appropriate reminder! Though that day and hour are not known (Matthew 24:36), the hour will come in accordance with God’s timetable. Perhaps some would state, “Rest assured Jesus is coming again”; meaning it can be counted on or it will most certainly take place! However, “rest” may not necessarily be the best word to associate with that expectation. When Jesus returns -- or should death bring our departure from this realm before His coming -- that will then be the time for rest. Now is the time to press on -- though in expectation of that hour -- in what would be associated with proper preparedness (Matthew 24:44) for ourselves and others for whenever the time may be.
In Paul’s letter to Titus we read…
“(11) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, (12) training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to LIVE SELF-CONTROLLED, UPRIGHT, AND GODLY LIVES in the present age, (13) WAITING FOR OUR BLESSED HOPE, THE APPEARING OF THE GLORY OF OUR GREAT GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, (14) who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are ZEALOUS FOR GOOD WORKS.” (Titus 2:11-14 ESV)
We wait, but not idly. We wait, but with a sense of diligence in LIVING GODLY LIVES (vs. 12) here in this present age while (vs. 14) nurturing a zealousness for GOOD WORKS. As Christians we ought to live in joyful anticipation of meeting our Lord while still recognizing the Will of God we are to BE DOING in the meantime.
When Paul encourage the Christians at Corinth with regard to the eternity with Christ that is to come, he exhorted…
“Therefore, my beloved brothers, BE STEADFAST, IMMOVABLE, ALWAYS ABOUNDING IN THE WORK OF THE LORD, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV)
Being “steadfast” and “immovable” is with regard to our life’s association with the truth of Jesus and all that relates to it. However, our activity is to be marked by ABOUNDING IN THE LORD’S WORK! May we not confuse the waiting and working, but recognize their proper relation as all of our life activity points our attention toward our eternity with Him.
Have a great day MARKED BY ACTIVE ANTICIPATION!

Piercing The Perils Of Darkness!
Darkness presents many difficulties.
In the darkness it is easy to imagine things which are not there, causing fears to arise that are often unfounded.
In the darkness there is the danger of stumbling and falling. Serious injury is possible. Even a stubbed toe is bad enough.
In the darkness it is easy to lose one’s sense of direction. It is even possible to end up wandering around and around in circles without realizing it and thus get no where.
Just as there are difficulties relating to physical darkness, so also there is extreme danger in spiritual darkness. That is why we ought to praise God for His provision of the LIGHT OF JESUS and strive to remain in that light.
Note these encouraging words of Jesus.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. WHOEVER FOLLOWS ME WILL NOT WALK IN DARKNESS, BUT WILL HAVE THE LIGHT OF LIFE.’” (John 8:12 ESV)
In the LIGHT OF JESUS we have many fears eliminated because of His promises in relation to both this life and eternity. Also, by following in His teachings we will avoid many of the pitfalls with which the rest of the world struggles. And we know that following Jesus leads to eternity in Heaven. Thanks to God’s provision of the LIGHT OF JESUS we do not have to be plagued by aimless wandering in life. In Him we find our truest meaning and direction.
Have a great day WALKING IN HIS LIGHT!

Remedies!
I recently came across the following referred to as “The History of Medicine” that appears to describe the changes in prescribed remedies through the ages. “Here, eat this root.” (2000 B.C.) “That root is heathen. Here, say this prayer.” (1000 A.D.) “That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.” (1850 A.D.) “That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.” (1940 A.D. “That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.” (1985 A.D.) “That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root.” (2000 A.D.)
Did you note the cycle? Even with all the technological advancements (and there have been many wonderful discoveries of medicines and procedures that are highly effective in benefiting the body and health in general) there are still things that have been around for ages that still have their value. Perhaps there are more herbs and other things yet to be discovered or that have been forgotten through the ages that God placed in His creation for our benefit.
Now, let me first say I am in no way minimizing the importance of medical and health professionals (including mental health), but we still should remain aware of how we live in a world full of “experts” who’s “expertise” comes with a wide variation of advice. One expert will say to do one thing and another say to do another while through the years there seems to be a continually changing “solution” to life situations God already addressed. At the “root” of many of life’s challenges is the refusal to acknowledge God’s Sovereign Will! Since He is the Author and Creator of life, what is often needed most is to get BACK TO THE BASICS of what He has declared true from the beginning of time!
In the wisdom of Proverbs we read…
“(5) EVERY WORD OF GOD PROVES TRUE; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. (6) Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.” (Proverbs 30:5-6 ESV)
We can count on His counsel. We can rely on His direction.
When Jesus addressed the subject of anxiousness in life, He urged…
“But SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)
It is God’s Ways and Will that we need to continually seek as the BASIC FOUNDATION for our life. Though some seem to live by the philosophy, “When all else fails, seek God!”, we will be spared much frustration, pain, and time if we would seek GOD’S WAY FIRST! Let us live in a manner that makes His wisdom evident in our daily living so that others may come to understand this to be true as well. May the “root” remedy associated with our life be that which goes deep in drawing life from the Will and Word of God!
Have a great day FINDING THE CURE IN CHRIST!

What Kind Of Beings?
Life is filled with experiences on many levels. These experiences may be classified as emotional, intellectual, personal or social, physical or spiritual, etc. However, WHAT ARE WE that is drawn into these experiences? Do these experiences define us or is there something greater that defines us and determines the manner in which these experiences are encountered and gone through?
In the window of a house I walk past on a regular basis is a small plaque stating: “We Are Not Human Beings Having A Spiritual Experience. We Are Spiritual Beings Having A Human Experience.”
We must remember the God Who is behind the origin of our life! We exist because God exists. God created us “in His image” (Genesis 1:26-27) to be not merely fleshly, but rather SPIRITUAL BEINGS. Now here is the thing with which we must come to grips: How often do we allow our humanness to get in the way?
Paul note the struggle of the church at Corinth when he admonished…
“(1) But I, brothers, COULD NOT ADDRESS YOU AS SPIRITUAL PEOPLE, BUT AS PEOPLE OF THE FLESH, as infants in Christ. (2) I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, (3) for YOU ARE STILL OF THE FLESH. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and BEHAVING ONLY IN A HUMAN WAY?” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3 ESV)
The church at Corinth was a gifted church. Empowered as they were, one might assume there was a high level of maturity among them. However, this was not the case. The problem was that though they were Christians, their humanness (flesh) continued to get in the way, creating conflict among them rather than unity. As Paul put it, they were behaving “in a human way” when they should have been behaving in a GODLY or SPIRITUAL MANNER. They still needed to do some more maturing in Christ.
What kind of being be we? What is reflected in our own decision making and daily living? What marks the spirit of our relationships? Is such based on our own desires? Is it approached in accordance with earthly standards? Or are we constantly striving to base all on the fact we are SPIRITUAL BEINGS created in the image of God and being renewed in that image through Christ? As we consider others -- their utmost interests and needs -- and seek to set self aside in being a servant for God’s glorious purposes, we will find ourselves embracing Christ-likeness right where the rubber meets the road! May we acknowledge the proper essence of our being, living in such a manner that our Creator may be seen and glorified in all aspects of our life.
Have a great day GETTING DOWN TO EARTH ABOUT SPIRITUAL LIVING!

Important Note!
Sometimes meetings are begun with an important note. That note is something not to be missed. Perhaps everything else said or the business conducted in that meeting hinges on this important note.
With an orchestra there is an important note with which to begin. Before a performance, there is a note given from which the whole orchestra tunes. However, that is not just any note. The note to which an orchestra tunes is the “A” above middle “C” which is standardized at a frequency of 440 hertz. This note is usually given to the rest of the orchestra by the oboe player who has matched their note with an electronic tuner.
On what note is our life being lived? Have we just picked any note? Like an orchestra that cannot play in harmony if the same note is not tuned to, so there will be discord in life when everyone chooses their own note on which to base life. I submit to you that the note to which we need to tune our lives is “C”, and a very high one at that!
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome we read…
“(15) May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to LIVE IN SUCH HARMONY with one another, IN ACCORD WITH CHRIST JESUS, (6) that together you may with ONE VOICE glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (7) Therefore WELCOME one another AS CHRIST HAS WELCOMED you, for the glory of God.” (Romans 15:5-7 ESV)
“In accord with CHRIST JESUS.” CHRIST is to be the note to which our life is tuned. The Greek word “kata” (translated “accord”) is a preposition meaning “according to.” It bears the idea of “after the manner of” or “in accordance with.” For us to be in accord is to be in agreement, to have consensus, and to be in harmony. Having our lives tuned to CHRIST is the only way we can all blend as the “one voice” Paul urged the church at Rome toward.
Let us bear in mind that though we are the players (and singers) in this realm, life’s “score” was written by God and He is to be recognized as the conductor of it. Just as the “A” makes a difference for the orchestra, even more so having our lives IN TUNE WITH CHRIST will make all the world of difference with our blending together. Let us therefore take “LIFE’S PITCH” as the “C” for CHRIST so that harmony may exist to the glory of God.
Have a great day TAKING LIFE’S PITCH FROM CHRIST!

Before Complaining!
Some are quick to complain. When things are not going well the first response is sometimes to look for someone to blame. Surely it must be someone’s fault. However, how many times might that “someone” be closer than we think. Perhaps we would do well to begin with some SELF-EXAMINATION before we look elsewhere!
During the time of Jeremiah, the disobedience of God’s people was great. Still they wondered why God was not blessing them. What they failed to acknowledge was their own unrepentant attitude and rebellion that had left them without God’s forgiveness. (Lamentations 3:42)
Jeremiah wrote…
“(39) Why should a living man complain, a man, about the punishment of his sins? (40) LET US TEST AND EXAMINE OUR WAYS, AND RETURN TO THE LORD!” (Lamentations 3:39-40 ESV)
Why should we complain about what our choices may have brought to us? Why should we blame another -- even becoming angry with God as some do (Proverbs 19:3) -- when the results of having ignored His Way are experienced? God is righteous. He is just. He will allow us to feel the effects of our choices. However, His ultimate desire is for us to acknowledge our error and turn back toward Him; returning to the Lord, as Jeremiah stated.
Note David’s desire as he focused on his relationship with God.
“(23) SEARCH ME, O God, and KNOW MY HEART! TRY ME and KNOW MY THOUGHTS! (24) And see if there be any grievous way in me, and LEAD ME IN THE WAY EVERLASTING!” (Psalm 139:23-24 ESV)
It is for our benefit that we be open to such in our relationship with God. Let us not complain at God, but instead do some soul-searching to determine where our life needs to be placed back on track with His Will. Maintaining a genuine penitent spirit and openness to God’s direction will continue to bring His blessing. May we be as eager to respond to Him as He is to us.
Have a great day FOLLOWING IN THE WAY EVERLASTING!

He's My Life!
“He [she] was my life!” I’ve heard those words many times when I have been called upon to offer support to someone who has suddenly lost their spouse to death. I’ve heard them in emergency waiting rooms, intensive care units, and in the homes of the deceased. They are words that address the CENTERED FOCUS on a loved one and also convey the devastation being experienced by the loss. It is the picture of a relationship in which the sun is seen to rise and set! It is descriptive of a relationship that has come to be felt as defining the life! That is why those words are many times followed with “What am I going to do?” as I try to offer whatever support I can.
It is not easy to lose those around whom one’s whole life REVOLVES, but such must be faced because death is a reality of this life. However, we ought to live a life CENTERED on the fact death is not the end and do so with the focus CENTERED on the most important relationship of all!
Paul noted this CENTERED LIFE focus in his letter to the church at Colossae.
“(2) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (3) For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (4) When CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:2-4 ESV)
How much of our life CENTERS around Christ? When we became Christians there was a death that took place (symbolized through baptism -- Romans 6:1-4) so that we could enter into a new life in Christ. At that point He was to BECOME OUR LIFE! Our life is to REVOLVE AROUND HIM and the truth of His Will. If that is not the case, then all we are set to experience is the devastation of eternal loss. However, to maintain a life CENTERED on Christ means we have the hope of appearing with Him in glory! May “He is my life!” truly be our CENTERED FOCUS on Jesus our Lord and Savior because it is only in Him that death’s sting (1 Corinthians 15:54-57) is removed.

What A Name!
Yesterday morning -- in connection with our focus on the Lord’s Supper -- we sang, “Jesus, Name Above All Names.” The words to this short, but very meaningful song (written by Naida Hearn, © 1974) are “Jesus, name above all names: Beautiful Savior, glorious Lord, Emmanuel, God is with us, Blessed Redeemer, Living Word.”
This short song contains a fairly comprehensive Bible study regarding the great significance of Jesus. Jesus! (Matthew 1:21) Savior! (Luke 2:11) Lord! (Luke 2:11; Matthew 7:21-22) Emmanuel! (Matthew 1:23) Redeemer! (Titus 2:13-14) Living Word! (John 1:1-2,14) Reading each of those passages we should readily acknowledge how the above references to Jesus are not the mere ideas of men. They were declared by God’s angelic messengers, stated by the Lord Himself, and revealed through the inspired Scriptures. There is none other like Him; none other who bears all of these designations. To hear the Name of Jesus should cause us to think of these and more. Is it acknowledged by all? No! Should it be! Yes, because there is “NO OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN” by which we can be saved! (Acts 4:12) Therefore Jesus is to be viewed ABOVE ALL!
Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul noted…
“(9) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, (10) so that AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and EVERY TONGUE CONFESS THAT JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)
There is no realm where the rightful acknowledgement of the Lordship of Jesus is not to be made. “JESUS, NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES.” Yes, it is a short song, but oh, how deeply significant it should be to us. That significance of Jesus goes way beyond the story of an infant placed in a manger after His birth. This Jesus is our only hope of salvation, to be the authority over our life, be recognized for His Divine essence, as our purchaser and pardoner before the Father, and the supreme example of how we can live pleasing to God even while in the flesh. May those around us be able to clearly see the EXALTED JESUS reflected in the manner in which we live our daily life that they too may come to understand how significant He should be to them as well!
Have a great day LIVING UNDER JESUS CHRIST ABOVE ALL!

Transfer!
Transfers. Life is filled with them. We transfer things from one place to another. Money is transferred from one account to another. Students transfer from one school to another. People transfer within a company from one office location to another. And the list goes on. Transfers may be put in for or could be decided upon by others with no choice about it. Sometimes transfers are met with some apprehension due to moving from the known to the not so familiar. There can also be a sense of excitement realizing the opportunity for a new beginning and perhaps even greater possibilities for advancement.
Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul noted a transfer they (and we as Christians) have received. We read…
“(11) May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, (12) giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (13) He HAS DELIVERED US FROM THE DOMAIN OF DARKNESS AND TRANSFERRED US TO THE KINGDOM OF HIS BELOVED SON, (14) in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:11-14 ESV)
The Greek word translated “transferred” is “metestesen”, from “methistemi”, meaning “to transpose, transfer, remove from one place to another.” [Strong’s concordance] It is a word that has also been used to describe those having been deported from one country to another. According to W.E. Vine’s Dictionary of N.T. words, “meta” implies “change” and “histemi” is “to cause to stand.” Because of Christ OUR STANDING HAS CHANGED! We weren’t just released from the domain of darkness to be left wandering, but have been moved into a new realm; presently standing in our Lord’s glorious kingdom where we can dwell in the brilliant light of His love and truth.
May our daily life reflect our understanding of the “new land” we are citizens of and the great Ruler we are blessed to STAND UNDER. Praise God for such a wonderful rescue that has enabled us to STAND ENLIGHTENED AND SECURE in Christ.
Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR SUCH A GRACIOUS PROMOTION!

Learn From History!
When God is forgotten or no knowledge of Him is retained, what is bound to happen? Is it any surprise when there is chaos, selfishness, and a lack of peace? Is this something we are learning?
In Hosea we read…
“(1) Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and NO KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IN THE LAND; (2) there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.” (Hosea 4:1-2 ESV)
This charge was against Israel. These were people who had a rich history of God’s deliverance and provision. They were without excuse for not knowing God. What then was the moral climate in which they lived? There was swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and unfaithfulness to the covenant of marriage. In other words talk was not what it should have been, TRUTH was set aside, human life was not valued, personal property was not respected, and the strength of the family was being undermined. Does that sound anything like what is presently going on in the world?
In our country today there continues to be a concerted effort by some to eliminate every reference to God in public places. In the wake of this should there be any wonder why things are going the way they are? There is even a denial of Biblical principles and the acknowledgement of God’s wisdom as having been part of the foundation for the establishment of governing guidelines. Those who change history naturally won’t learn from history and are therefore doomed and doom others to make the same mistakes again.
Consider the following observation: “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” (Aldous Huxley, “Collected Essays, 1959) [source: A Treasury of Business Quotations”, p.91, compiled by Michael C. Thomsett, © 1990]
Certainly that is an important lesson to not be overlooked! Changing or denying TRUTH will never move us forward. Instead it leaves us to make the same mistakes and have to rediscover the TRUTH all over again. And it doesn’t have to be that way! Life is too short to repeat the mistakes of the past. Let us understand our life can only be properly navigated when we are using the right moral compass. May the Scriptures remain our life manual with God’s Will being our TRUE north!
Have a great day KNOWING A BRIGHTER FUTURE COMES GOD’S WAY!

Life Implications!
Christian living implies the idea of being alive. Being alive implies movement. Movement implies direction. Direction implies destination. What are the implications associated with our life?
Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul noted the focus of His life as a Christian. Though he had been involved in much fruitful labor to the glory of God, instead of resting on his past successes his involvement in the work of God continued. Not only was this necessary for the sake of others, but when action ceases, the life tends to become stagnant (or complacent) and one can soon find themselves slipping away.
Therefore Paul stated…
“(12) Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. (13) Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and STRAINING FORWARD to what lies ahead, (14) I PRESS ON toward the goal for the prize of the UPWARD CALL of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:12-14 ESV)
Perhaps to summarize Paul’s life from these verses we could describe it as STRAINING FORWARD while PRESSING UPWARD! A life marked by “straining” implies DILIGENT EFFORT. To “press on” in spite of challenges as Paul did (even through his present imprisonment) implies DETERMINATION! And “upward” implies no coasting, but rather PURPOSEFUL MOTION!
When walking up a hill our body leans forward and each step requires the feet to be lifted higher and placed decisively on the way. Is our spiritual walk marked in the same manner? Or have we chosen the path of least resistance or perhaps decided to sit down where we are and go no further? The Christian walk does take DETERMINATION. It does take EFFORT. It must be approached PURPOSEFULLY. It won’t just happen by itself anymore than getting to the top of a mountain will. May our life, like Paul’s, be distinguished by a continual STRAINING FORWARD while PRESSING UPWARD toward God and the eternity Jesus has made possible. Such is the natural movement of a life genuinely compelled by the gracious love of God.
Have a great day RECOGNIZING WHAT’S WORTH LIFE’S GREATEST EFFORTS!

Daniel lived through a time spanning from captivity under the Babylonians through the time of the power of the Medes and Persians. Because of His faithfulness to God, he found himself being advanced within those governments and even delivered from those who sought his life. God gave Daniel insight into the visions of others -- causing the God of Daniel to be recognized and revered -- and had some of his own visions as well. Some of these visions perplexed Daniel as to when the events described would be fulfilled.
Daniel was a man of prayer. In fact it was his faithfulness to communicating with God that some tried to use against him. (Daniel 6) However, God was mindful of the situation and delivered him from the mouth of the lions. Daniel’s prayers were marked by a sense of humility as he recognized pleas were not brought before God because of his own (or other’s) righteousness, but rather because of God’s great mercy. (Daniel 9:18) Do we approach prayer with the same attitude?
On one occasion as Daniel prayed confessing his sin and that of the people (Daniel 9:20), the response he received was accompanied by a very encouraging statement that is found three times. (Daniel 9:23; 10:11 & 19) I encourage you to take a look at each of these, noting the context and other encouragement associated with them, but for the sake of space here consider the first of the three.
We read…
“(21) while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, came to me in swift flight at the time of the evening sacrifice. (22) He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, ‘O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. (23) At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, FOR YOU ARE GREATLY LOVED. Therefore consider the word and understand the vision.” (Daniel 9:21-23 ESV)
The Hebrew word used in this text is “chamudah” and is a word that has also been translated “high esteem” or “precious”. God was mindful of Daniel’s situation. God listened to his prayers. Even though Daniel was in a foreign land and served a foreign king he did his best to maintain a faithful relationship with God. And oh how encouraging it is to know one is GREATLY LOVED, especially when that is God’s view.
“For you are GREATLY LOVED.” I think God knew Daniel needed to hear this. I believe He wants us to understand His GREAT LOVE for us as well. When we are LOVED OF GOD, what can separate us from Him? Paul stated there is nothing! (Romans 8:38-39) However, we still must remain in that love. (Jude 21) Knowing we are LOVED OF GOD can strengthen us even when we (like Daniel) don’t understand all the details relating to the future. Let us remember that “If God is for us who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31b) GOD’S LOVE IS GREAT! It was demonstrated through the great gift of His Son. May we be greatly encouraged by it!
Have a great day KNOWING THE GREAT LOVE BEHIND GOD’S MINDFULNESS!

Letting Go!
Letting go is not always easy. When it comes to our own interests, rights, and even privileges, we generally try to hold on to all we can. However, is it ever possible for such to get in the way of our fulfilling the purposes of God in our life?
Remember Jesus was called “Immanuel” which means, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23) In John’s Gospel Jesus was clearly introduced as being in the beginning with God and being God (John 1:1-2) though He became flesh to live among us. (John 1:14) There is a “oneness” to be acknowledged. (John 10:30) However, consider how Paul described our Lord’s focus when He came to earth.
Pointing to Christ as the example for our life, Paul urged…
“(5) Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, (6) who, though he was in the form of God, DID NOT COUNT EQUALITY WITH GOD A THING TO BE GRASPED, (7) but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, (8) he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)
Here is the mind or attitude we as Christians are to cultivate. In the previous verses Paul had just addressed the idea of unity among the brethren there at Philippi and THE LOVE that was to be shared together with an emphasis on giving consideration to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:1-4) We need to bear in mind Paul was not addressing the idea of others’ mere whims, but rather interests in the sense of concerns and needs. Paul then turned the focus toward Jesus as the model for such living.
Our Lord’s focus was that of not counting “equality with God a thing to be GRASPED.” Not that it was not His place. Not that it was out of His reach. Not that this was not a rightful focus for us to have toward Him. We need to see that Jesus was willing to give up for a time some of the privilege for which His Divine essence could have been used. In other words, He did not hold on to it, but set it aside, making Himself nothing, taking on the form of a servant and the likeness of mankind. (Philippians 2:7) Jesus let go in order to carry out what needed to be done on our behalf. He was not thinking of Himself, but rather of us; our greatest spiritual interest, the salvation of our soul. In our Lord’s humility He served the purpose of Deity in making our redemption and salvation possible.
What one is willing to deny themselves (position, personal rights, comforts, etc.) or temporarily set aside for the sake of meeting the needs of others is one of the GREATEST SIGNS OF GENUINE LOVE. Like Jesus, we must never let go of the truth, but there are self interests that can be set aside for the moment as we turn our attention toward the interests of others. Letting go in this way opens the door for God to use us for His purposes. That is exactly what took place on our behalf through Christ. May we cultivate the same mind.
Have a great day LIVING A CHRIST-MINDED LIFE!

As Long As I'm Here!
“Well, as long as I’m here I might as well….” How many times have we heard or even spoken such words? To me the words convey a sense of annoyance or maybe even a bit of resentment. “As long as I’m here I might as well get started.” “As long as I’m here I might as well help out.” As long as I’m here I might as well practice.” As long as I’m here I might as well _______.” Are they words offered from a perspective of really desiring to be somewhere else and involved in some other activity?
Yesterday morning I was struck again by the attitude of Paul as expressed in his letter to the church at Philippi. There we read…
“(21) For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (22) If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. (23) I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.” (Philippians 1:21-23 ESV)
Since “teEn-MAIL” began going out in March of 1998, I have referred to and focused on most of this text a number of times. However, looking back through my records I found I had only quoted verse 22 twice and even then talked all around it rather than from it. I may have addressed the concept from other passages of Scripture, but it strikes me that as I have focused on the verses around it and the glorious anticipation of the glories of Heaven, I was missing an important point right in the middle of it all. Perhaps that is descriptive of our life focus at times. We get so focused on what is to come -- and we should continually bear in mind this realm is not all there is to our existence -- that we forget what is to be focused on where we are RIGHT NOW!
Again note Paul’s statement in the twenty-second verse.
“IF I AM TO LIVE IN THE FLESH THAT MEANS FRUITFUL LABOR FOR ME.” (Philippians 1:22 ESV)
As long as Paul was in the flesh where was his focus? It was on FRUITFUL LABOR. That is what living in this realm meant to Paul. Even imprisonment could not cause his labors in the Lord to cease. (note Colossians 4:3-4 and 2 Timothy 2:9)
Are we continually seeking FRUITFUL LABOR? Branches and trees that cease BEARING FRUIT are destined to be removed. (note John 15:1-2 and Luke 13:6-9) As long as we are alive we are to keep God’s purpose for our existence in mind. May we strive to develop the focus of Paul that appears to have naturally defined living as meaning FRUITFUL LABOR; labor not with resentment, but rather a cheerful acknowledgement that as long as we are here it is what we are focused toward.
Have a great day KEEPING LIFE PROPERLY DEFINED!

Salty!
Among the ways in which Jesus described those who were (or would be) His disciples is a reference to their being “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world”. (Matthew 5:13-14) Light is something that works very visibly. It is easy to see (or rather be unable to see) when it is absent. Salt on the other hand impacts in a more subtle manner. Though its presence or absence in food may be detected by taste, it is not so easily known by sight. It is through coming INTO CONTACT with it in some way that salt’s benefit is found and appreciated.
We might think of the seasoning quality and preserving capability of salt. However one of its powerful aspects is its ability TO CREATE THIRST. There are some foods that make me very thirsty. When this happens I have to find the right source to quench that thirst because some things just don’t do it. Sometimes a glass of milk helps while other times I am caused to keep drinking water and drinking water until I feel like I’m literally sloshing inside.
When others come INTO CONTACT with our life, do we live in such a way that we can make them REALLY THIRSTY for the Christian life we have?
Jesus said…
“YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH, but IF SALT HAS LOST ITS TASTE, HOW SHALL ITS SALTINESS BE RESTORED? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” (Matthew 5:13 ESV)
There is a warning here to guard against the loss of “saltiness”! To lose the “saltiness” is to lose OUR PURPOSE! However, that thirst we create in others is to be FOR JESUS as the One who can truly satisfy. When Jesus talked with the woman at the well, He tried to help her understand that He alone could offer her what would truly satisfy her thirst and do so forever. (John 4:13-14) If we create the thirst, but do not direct the attention ultimately to Jesus, we have fallen short of OUR PURPOSE. May the “saltiness” of our life produce a thirst in others that causes them to reach for Jesus to quench it.
Have a great day LEADING TOWARD LIVING WATER!

In And Out Of Worship!
Reading through Ezekiel I came across a command which struck me regarding the focus we ought to have when coming before God to worship. The book of Ezekiel contains some difficult things to understand, but the last part of the book points to a time of renewal. Let me first of all admit I’m not certain what all was behind the following command. Perhaps it was merely part of an orderly way in which things were to be done. However, consider this verse and a practical application regarding our own coming together for worship as a congregation of people.
God, speaking to Ezekiel, stated…
“When the people of the land come before the LORD at the appointed feasts, HE WHO ENTERS BY THE NORTH GATE TO WORSHIP SHALL GO OUT BY THE SOUTH GATE, and HE WHO ENTERS BY THE SOUTH GATE SHALL GO OUT BY THE NORTH GATE: NO ONE SHALL RETURN BY WAY OF THE GATE BY WHICH HE ENTERED, but each shall go out straight ahead.” (Ezekiel 46:9 ESV)
When we assemble together to worship God, do we go out the same way we came in? I’m not referring to the same door, but rather the manner of focus. Is there any change to our life? Do we feel a sense of renewal? Do we leave with a more determined resolve to turn from sin? Do we MOVE ON with a stronger conviction to carry out God’s Will?
Our worship ought to inspire us to keep MOVING STRAIGHT AHEAD in the Way of God rather than returning to the way in which we came. As we come before God with a broken and contrite heart (Psalm 51:17) we can MOVE ON mended and whole. This ought to be our focus during our own individual quiet times as well. If we truly honor and worship God -- if we sincerely acknowledge His “worth-ship” in our lives -- how can we not MOVE ON differently than we came? May we daily remain open to God’s continuing renewing power.
Have a great day MOVING ON IN GOD’S WAY!

Proper Basis Of Faith!
Feelings may neither be right nor wrong in and of themselves. They are merely indicators of how something is impacting us or is perceived. Feelings just are what they are. However, we must be mindful of what actions they prompt us toward. Feelings can be powerful motivators, but being motivated only by them can be misleading.
Here is an experiment you might want to try. Place one hand in a bowl of hot water and the other hand in a bowl of ice water for a few minutes. Then place both hands in separate bowls of room temperature water and see what your senses tell you. The amazing thing that happens is the hand that was in the hot water feels cold while the hand that was in the ice water feels hot. Though the water is the same temperature the feelings tell a different story. It is only our KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH THAT AFFIRMS the temperature is the same.
There are many who base their faith and religion on feelings and though feelings should be involved in our worship and life those feelings need to be based on a KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH.
In reference to his Jewish brethren Paul stated…
“(1) Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (2) I bear them witness that THEY HAVE A ZEAL FOR GOD, BUT NOT ACCORDING TO KNOWLEDGE.” (Romans 10:1-2 ESV)
Paul himself had been there. He had been at a point when he felt he must do everything possible to destroy the church. (i.e. Acts 22:3-5; 26:9) There is no question regarding the passion Paul brought to that work, but it was in ignorance that he was involved in the persecution. Once the KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH gained its foothold in his life that passion became properly directed.
Writing to the church at Philippi, Paul offered this prayer.
“(9) And it is my prayer THAT YOUR LOVE MAY ABOUND MORE AND MORE, WITH KNOWLEDGE AND ALL DISCERNMENT, (10) so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, (11) filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:9-11 ESV)
There is only a one letter difference between the “Word” and the “world”, but the ideologies are worlds apart! May we grow in a passionate love for a KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH that helps us discern the things of this life properly. A passion based on the TRUTH OF GOD will be a safeguard for our own life and aid us in helping others find their way as well. What we know of God’s Word will make a world and eternity of difference.
Have a great day LIVING A LIFE AFFIRMED BY GOD!
