God's Math!
Mathematics was not one of my better subjects in school and being a Bible major in college I was thankful I did not have to take much of it. However, there are aspects of math that are a part of every day life. Whether we are counting items, figuring out how much time we have or how long something might take, balancing the check book, etc., there is the need for some knowledge of simple math. We add, we subtract, multiply, and divide perhaps even without realizing such skills are being used during the day to day activities of life.
Not only is mathematics a part of physical life, but our spiritual life as well. There is Biblical knowledge and Christian character to be continually ADDED to our life. (i.e. 2 Peter 1:5-7) There are ungodly ideas or actions that are to be taken away (SUBTRACTED) and gotten rid of. (i.e. 1 Peter 2:1) There is the need to rightly DIVIDE the word of truth ( 2 Timothy 2:15) to gain a proper understanding of its application to life. And there is the blessing of MULTIPLICATION as well.
There is a hymn published in 1895 written by William R. Newell (1868-1956) titled “At Calvary.” In the chorus of this hymn we find the words: “Mercy there was great, and grace was free; Pardon there was multiplied to me; There my burdened soul found liberty At Calvary.” When I was younger I thought I heard the words “Pardon there was MULTIPLIED BY THREE” and as I child it made perfect sense. Sin taken away by the power of the blood of Jesus and the blessing of pardon not just added, but MULTIPLIED!
In both of the letters written by Peter, he began with an encouraging prayer regarding GRACE and PEACE. In the second letter we read it as follows:
“MAY GRACE AND PEACE BE MULTIPLIED TO YOU in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” ( 2 Peter 1:2 ESV)
When we recognize the pardon (forgiveness) we have received from God, that blessing is because of His great GRACE. Since we have received such GRACE, the PEACE we experience in life ought to be MULTIPLIED many times over! May we continually seek a right relationship with God so that His mathematics will work out in our life according to His Will.
Have a great day ENJOYING LIFE ACCORDING TO GOD’S CALCULATIONS!
