Dressed For What?
Since we live in a relatively small community, many of the postal carriers and employees at our local post office know me. They even wave at me as I walk around town. The mail carrier who frequently delivers the mail to our home even knows that Tuesdays are a day off for me and knows I generally take a long walk in the morning and will sometimes do some work around the yard on that day. There have been several Tuesdays he has been heading out on his route from the post office as I looped by there to check our post office box prior to walking my last couple miles home and then to his surprise I am home and already working in the yard by the time he gets to our house. Yesterday as I walked out to our mail box as he pulled up in front of our house, the mail carrier asked, “Why are you dressed up and not in your work clothes today?” I explained I had already taken my long Tuesday walk, showered, and was prepared to go to a meeting that afternoon. It is obvious he has come to associate the day of the week with the way in which I am dressed and yesterday was different than the usual Tuesday.
Many people can be known by the way they are dressed. Police officers, fire fighters, medics, and others are recognized by the uniforms they wear. Painters and ditch diggers are recognized by the work clothes they have on. However, for what is it that GOD SEES us dressed? What is it that He has become accustomed to seeing?
Jesus urged…
“STAY DRESSED FOR ACTION and keep your lamps burning,” ( Luke 12:35 ESV)
Jesus went on to speak in parabolic language with regard to readiness for the master’s return and a special blessing associated with being found alert and ready. Ultimately Jesus concluded the parable with an exhortation to remain prepared for His coming whenever that might be. ( Luke 12:40) However, in the mean time the expectation is for us to remain DRESSED FOR ACTION in accordance with His purposes and will. Our life is to be noted as ONE OF ACTION rather than simply sitting around waiting. There is work to be done. There is service to be performed. Is our life pictured as being in a STATE OF READINESS for whenever the opportunities of service for the Lord and to His glory are there? May the clothing God sees adorning our life be that of ACTION AND READINESS in a way that those around us will not be surprised, but rather recognize it as our dress for every day.
Have a great day CLOTHED WITH CHRISTIAN ACTIVE WEAR!
