Where We Live!

While driving through another town a couple months ago, I noticed a large billboard that gave the name of the town and then stated, “WHERE OPPORTUNITY LIVES!” Was it an encouragement for people living there to remain? Was it an enticement for others to move there? How many are still looking for a “LAND OF OPPORTUNITY”? That desire is at the foundation of what began to grow the country of the United States of America. It is why some still would like to come here. That particular town we were driving through was one our family had lived in quite a number of years ago, and I know there were (and most likely still are) people who were unemployed. I also know there have been businesses there that have struggled economically. Jobs for some have come and gone and in some cases come back again. There may be opportunities, but perhaps not everyone has been able to find them. Maybe it somewhat depends on how and for what one is looking.

Opportunities! People search near and people search far and wonder where they are. Opportunity sometimes knocks and is ignored. There are times opportunity is walked by without ever noticing it. In the rush to take care of the urgent, sometimes the important is missed. The reality for us as Christians is that there are truly opportunities all around us for impacting the lives of others in both small and huge ways. Are our eyes (and hearts) being kept open to them?

Paul encouraged those at Galatia…
“(9) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” ( Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

More and more as I walk around the community where we live and engage in conversation with others I am struck by all the opportunities I had driven by in the past. As we go about our daily lives we need to recognize how much we are in the midst of the LAND OF OPPORTUNITY to serve the purposes of God in our encounters along the way. We don’t always have to go very far if we will just be attentive to those among whom we live on a daily basis. Because “now is the day of salvation” ( 2 Corinthians 6:2), before the opportunity is lost for those around us, let us acknowledge that now is the time and where we live is the place to be about the good work of God.

Have a great day LIVING FOR CHRIST WHERE WE ARE!
Carl
