Never Say Never?

The advise is often given that we should never say never. How many parents have said, “My child would never….” only to have their child at some point do that very thing? How many individuals have said, “I would never….” only to find themselves having to eat their words? Have we been there? Have we done that? Have we come to realize that in taking a more humble view such things seem to be less likely to occur as we refrain from confidently using the word “never”? Perhaps in view of our “humanness” the statements would be best couched in the words “I hope” it won’t occur. However, is it true that we should never say never?

As Paul began his letter to Titus he wrote…
“(1) Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, (2) in hope of eternal life, which GOD, WHO NEVER LIES, PROMISED before the ages began (3) and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;” ( Titus 1:1-3 ESV)

Some translations read, “God, that [or ‘who’] cannot lie.” (KJV, NKJV, NASB) The Greek is “apseudes”, which signifies being free from falsehood (“a”, negative, “pseuedes”, false) and could be literally translated “un-lying” or “not lying”. That being the character or nature of God means HE NEVER LIES! Because God is completely righteous, all He has declared is trustworthy. When it comes to God we can say this “never” with all certainty!

Some of the things we hope won’t happen might unfortunately occur. However, when it comes to the eternal life that is promised to us through our relationship with Jesus, we can keep hope because our hope is in the One WHO NEVER LIES! May we continue to confidently take God at His Word!

Have a great day WITH UNQUESTIONING TRUST IN THE PROMISES OF GOD!
