Life Success!
Getting ahead. That is the quest of most people in this world. Trying to succeed in business or some other area of life that they believe will help get them the farthest. But how far does it take them? Is all the success experienced really success?
Sometimes we might look at those living without any acknowledgement of God and wonder why their life is marked by some successes we wish we had as well. (i.e. Psalm 73:3-14) Perhaps this perception is only because we have forgotten the bigger picture. (i.e. Psalm 73:15-28) Some have drawn the conclusion that the only way to make it in this life is to do so according to the world’s rules, even if that means cheating, deception, and stepping on whomever one has to in order to climb higher. Have we felt compelled to accept such thinking?
Someone has said, “An upright man can never be a downright failure.” [source: “1600 Squibs And Quips”, compiled by E. C. McKenzie]
In the end it is the living of an UPRIGHT LIFE that counts the most. One may get ahead in this realm only to have nothing for the next. In that case the life is a complete failure. On the other hand one could suffer many losses here and still be a success in the eyes of God for having endured and remained faithful.
Note the following three passages from Psalms.
“(10) My shield is with GOD, who SAVES THE UPRIGHT IN HEART.” (Psalm 7:10 ESV)
“(4) LIGHT DAWNS IN THE DARKNESS FOR THE UPRIGHT; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. (5) It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. (6) For the righteous will never be moved; he will BE REMEMBERED FOREVER.” (Psalm 112:4-6 ESV)
“(17) Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name; THE UPRIGHT SHALL DWELL IN YOUR PRESENCE.” (Psalm 140:17 ESV)
Salvation! Vision amidst the darkness. Lasting remembrance for considering others. The promise of being in God’s presence. Those are marks of the successful life lived by the UPRIGHT of heart. May we always recognize the true gain of godliness with contentment (1 Timothy 6:6) as we live faithful to the standard God has given for living a successful God glorifying life that brings benefit far beyond this realm.
Have a great day FINDING UPRIGHT SUCCESS!

Never Say Never?
The advise is often given that we should never say never. How many parents have said, “My child would never….” only to have their child at some point do that very thing? How many individuals have said, “I would never….” only to find themselves having to eat their words? Have we been there? Have we done that? Have we come to realize that in taking a more humble view such things seem to be less likely to occur as we refrain from confidently using the word “never”? Perhaps in view of our “humanness” the statements would be best couched in the words “I hope” it won’t occur. However, is it true that we should never say never?
As Paul began his letter to Titus he wrote…
“(1) Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, (2) in hope of eternal life, which GOD, WHO NEVER LIES, PROMISED before the ages began (3) and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;” (Titus 1:1-3 ESV)
Some translations read, “God, that [or ‘who’] cannot lie.” (KJV, NKJV, NASB) The Greek is “apseudes”, which signifies being free from falsehood (“a”, negative, “pseuedes”, false) and could be literally translated “un-lying” or “not lying”. That being the character or nature of God means HE NEVER LIES! Because God is completely righteous, all He has declared is trustworthy. When it comes to God we can say this “never” with all certainty!
Some of the things we hope won’t happen might unfortunately occur. However, when it comes to the eternal life that is promised to us through our relationship with Jesus, we can keep hope because our hope is in the One WHO NEVER LIES! May we continue to confidently take God at His Word!
Have a great day WITH UNQUESTIONING TRUST IN THE PROMISES OF GOD!

Lighting The Way!
As we understand there are many times in life when we must “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7), do we still recognize the glimpses we have been given to support that faith? Do we acknowledge the enlightenment God has provided as sufficient to guide us through until that day when all will be seen clearer? Are we able to look ahead and DISCERN ENOUGH to encourage moving onward in life’s journey toward our heavenly home?
It has been noted that “Discernment is like driving an automobile at night. The headlights cast only enough light for us to see the next small bit of road immediately in front of us. However, that light is enough to take us home.” [source: bulletin clipping]
Just as the headlights of a car are not bright enough to shine miles down the highway, so in life we may not be able to see very far down life’s road. The light of truth God has provided is enough, however, for us to press on in the present. The enlightenment of His Word can enable us to clearly DISCERN how and where we are walking right now so that we can trust His promises to ultimately see us safely home.
Writing to the church at Ephesus Paul encouraged…
“(8) for at one time you were darkness, but now YOU ARE LIGHT IN THE LORD. WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT (9) (for the fruit of light is found in all that is GOOD and RIGHT and TRUE), (10) and try to DISCERN WHAT IS PLEASING TO THE LORD.” (Ephesians 5:8-10 ESV)
Without accepting His light, there are things presently we will not be able to DISCERN because some things can only be “spiritually DISCERNED.” (1 Corinthians 2:14) The Hebrew writer noted a need for maturing and becoming skilled “in the word of righteousness” (Hebrews 5:13) so as to have our “POWERS OF DISCERNMENT trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:14 ESV) Therefore, God’s righteous word provides light for DISCERNING both how we should walk and where the steps of the journey should take us.
As the psalmist stated…
“YOUR WORD IS A LAMP TO MY FEET AND A LIGHT TO MY PATH.” (Psalm 119:105 ESV)
Life is taken a step at a time. Though the end of the journey should be kept in mind, keeping the gaze too far ahead may cause us to trip up from not DISCERNING what is immediately before us. Let us accept the light God provides for each step as we trust Him for when the next steps of the journey come. He will light enough of the way in front of us to help us arrive safely home.
Have a great day FOCUSED ON THE PATH IMMEDIATELY BEFORE US!

Not Be The Patient!
Impatience behind the wheel of a motor vehicle can create not only a danger for oneself, but for others as well. Someone has said, “It is better to be patient on the road than a patient in the hospital.” [source: bulletin clipping] Yes, to keep from becoming the patient it is a good idea TO BE patient! Patience or the lack thereof can have a dynamic impact on what we become. To start right helps to end right because when one gets in a hurry on the highways it increases the chances of having an accident. When in heavy or slow traffic, sometimes it is best to simply relax behind the wheel knowing that the destination will eventually be arrived at rather than saving what might amount to only a few seconds or minutes through dangerous passing.
Perhaps we could look at our spiritual life in the same way. Consider what Paul wrote to the church at Rome.
“(6) He [God] will render to each one according to his works: (7) to those who by PATIENCE IN WELL-DOING seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; (8) but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury” (Romans 2:6-8 ESV)
What a great contrast of outcomes in approaching life! One way leads to eternal life while the other brings the wrath and fury of God. Paul associated the patience with the “WELL-DOING” or DOING GOOD. Perhaps a sign of impatience is the “self-seeking” running ahead after one’s own will rather than patiently seeking the good Will of God. Some things can’t be hurried and that includes God’s timetable. As we continue DOING GOOD we must sometimes exercise patience in waiting for the results God will ultimately bring from our labors. Also, as the work often involves the lives of others, it is necessary to be patient toward them. In God’s time He will bring the glory, the honor, and ultimately the immortality we seek in our hope of eternal life.
Such living does not come by accident, but must be approached purposefully in seeking to do the Will of God. May WE BE not the patient by being the patient people God desires us to be as we trust His Sovereign Will to be worked in and through us.
Have a great day LETTING GOD’S WILL TAKE THE WHEEL OF OUR LIFE!

Very Sweet!
Yesterday (Sunday) sweet fellowship was enjoyed by Christians around the world. Though we may enjoy its sweetness, due to busy lives oftentimes that fellowship does not last very long. We come together and experience fellowship in studying the Scriptures together, worshiping as a congregation, communing around the Lord’s table, praying together, encouraging one another as brothers and sisters in Christ, and perhaps even sharing in a meal together. Most often that fellowship is over with quickly and we go back to our homes and busy schedules. Though it may be the nature of life in the world today, we should seek to take good advantage of the opportunities we have to fellowship with other brothers and sisters. We need that sweet connection to encourage and strengthen for the time we spend out in this world that runs counter to the Way of God. Though we live in this world, it is not with the world that we are in fellowship, but with the Lord and others who are in Him.
John wrote…
“(3) that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so THAT YOU TOO MAY HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH US; and indeed our FELLOWSHIP IS WITH THE FATHER AND WITH HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.” (1 John 1:3 ESV)
And he went on to state…
“(6) If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. (7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have FELLOWSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:6-7 ESV)
The fellowship I enjoyed yesterday was especially sweet because my wife and I were able to enjoy it a little longer than usual. It made for a long day, but it was time spent with brothers and sisters who share a common love for the Lord and His church. I enjoyed teaching our teen class in the morning, sharing in our congregational singing and prayer, remembering our Lord as we had communion together, having the privilege of encouraging our congregation through the preaching the Word, but that fellowship did not end with what was done at the building. Following our assembly together my wife and I shared a meal in the home of another couple in our congregation, joined also by three other members. The seven of us enjoyed sharing in a wonderful meal and especially the conversation that went on through the afternoon until we realized it was already time for our evening Bible study; more congregational fellowship time. We were gone from home all day, but we were AT HOME. We were AT HOME with those of whom we shared the fellowship of a kindred spirit of faith and love for our Lord. That is what makes the fellowship so very sweet.
The sweet blessings for this life and eternity to come are associated with our fellowship with the Father, the Son, and with one another. May we experience the sense of HOME-NESS that fellowship in God’s family provides.
Have a great day ENJOYING FELLOWSHIP’S VARIOUS FACETS!

Naturally!
When you turn on the faucet in your kitchen, what do you expect to get? Do you expect milk? How about Coke? Salt water? Fresh water? What would happen if you got both saltwater and fresh water out of the same faucet? It wouldn’t be fresh would it? That’s not the way it works. That wouldn’t be natural. That’s not what you should expect. You expect to get good, refreshing, clean water out of that faucet. You don’t expect one thing one moment and something else the next.
Now, suppose your life and my life were a faucet. What should be expected when it is turned on?
Regarding the tongue James wrote:
“(9) With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. (10) From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, THESE THINGS OUGHT NOT TO BE SO. (11) DOES A SPRING POUR FORTH FROM THE SAME OPENING BOTH FRESH AND SALT WATER? (12) Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.” (James 3:9-12 ESV)
As unnatural as it would be to have both from the same spring we should see how unnatural it ought to be for both praising and cursing to spring from the same mouth. Sometimes it seems that mankind is the most inconsistent part of God’s Creation. Let us strive to be consistent in the nature God created us to possess.
Have a great day LIVING CONSISTENT WITH GOD’S NATURE!

Broad Application!
Some information sources are very limited or narrowed in their focus while others have a very broad application. We may be aware of the laws of physics and chemistry, but unless we are employed in a field of science we may not need to give them much thought as we go about our daily life. However, at least some kind of mathematics is most likely used on a regular basis for simple counting, measuring, cooking, balancing the checkbook or paying bills, etc.
In Psalm 119 we read.
"I have seen a limit to all perfection, BUT YOUR COMMANDMENT IS EXCEEDINGLY BROAD." (Psalm 119:96 ESV)
Though we may recognize the limits of other things, when it comes to the application of God's commands, statutes, and principles -- they have the ability to relate to EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIFE! It should be no surprise that the Creator of life would be able to provide a "manual" to adequately address life's many facets. God's Word is practical. It works. When properly applied to our daily life it makes sense. Besides coming to know God and how to please Him, the Scriptures teach us about interpersonal relationships, the sound principles of good communication, consideration of others, developing a good work ethic, and the list goes on. As we wonder about the things of life the Bible is most often the best place to begin.
Later on in this same psalm we read.
"THE SUM OF YOUR WORD IS TRUTH, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever." (Psalm 119:160 ESV)
God's Word has and will stand the test of time. Amidst all the advice the world offers, let us recognize how ALL OF GOD'S WORD ADDS UP! It is applicable and practical for EVERY DAY use! Of all the things we use every day, may we be certain to make the Scriptures one of them!
Have a great day DRAWING FROM THE WORD'S WEALTH OF WISDOM!

A Call For Diligence And Vigilance!
"Vigilance" is defined as, "the condition of being watchful and alert, especially to danger" and "diligence" is defined as "persistent and hard-working effort in doing something." [source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary © 1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation.]
Since the attacks on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City (September 11, 2001), the call has been for vigilance on the part of all. Security at airports, seaports where cargo is unloaded, dams, power plants, military bases, etc. has been tightened and a heightened sense of watchfulness has been urged upon all from government agencies on down to the average citizen of our country. Along with this vigilance also comes the need for diligence. All of this is for the well warranted purpose of saving lives. However, lives can be saved while souls are still lost. Therefore there should be an even greater sense of URGENCY put forth with regard to the soul and its eternal destiny.
Yesterday we focused on a verse from Psalm 119. Today, let us consider another section of this same psalm.
"You have COMMANDED YOUR PRECEPTS TO BE KEPT DILIGENTLY. (5) Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! (6) Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments." (Psalm 119:4-6
ESV)
The Hebrew word translated "diligently" implies the ideas of abundance, exceedingly, muchness, force, or might. It is the call for MUCH EFFORT on our part. It is the cry for a SERIOUS FOCUS on what God has provided as the standard for life. God has given His precepts, but we must SINCERELY SEEK them and STEADFASTLY HOLD to them. Our life depends on it!
As Solomon offered a father's wise instruction, we read.
"(20) My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. (21) Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. (22) For THEY ARE LIFE TO THOSE WHO FIND THEM, and healing to all their flesh. (23) KEEP YOUR HEART WITH ALL VIGILANCE, for FROM IT FLOW THE SPRINGS OF LIFE." (Proverbs 4:20-23 ESV)
To heed the wisdom was to FIND LIFE. The word translated "vigilance" in the Hebrew implies the idea of posting a guard. That guard is to be in place to keep the wisdom we need from escaping! To keep the wisdom of our Heavenly Father with all diligence, vigilantly posting a guard at our heart, protects that from which flows the "springs of life." May we remain STEADFAST in exercising due diligence and vigilance in following the Will of God that brings the salvation of our life for eternity.
Have a great day ALERT TO ALL OF ETERNAL SIGNIFICANCE!

Confidence On The Journey!
When we know where we are going, we can travel in confidence and may do so at a good pace. However, when we are unsure of THE WAY we are going, the pace is often slowed. In such situations the driving may be slowed to enable the reading of street signs or to watch for landmarks that would indicate whether or not the right direction is being traveled and turns are being made when and where they ought to be. Confidence is greatly lacking when there is uncertainty regarding THE WAY.
Reading through Psalm 119 yesterday morning, I began thinking about this as I read the following:
“I WILL RUN IN THE WAY OF YOUR COMMANDMENTS when you enlarge my heart!” (Psalm 119: 32 ESV)
Running in THE WAY of God’s commandments! That’s the route we need to take in life because running outside the commands of God is where we will find ourselves stumbling and lost. To know HIS WAY is to provide a confidence that allows us to pick up our step with a certainty of THE WAY we are traveling. The running may also imply an eagerness on the journey in following Him and doing His Will. Is that the picture of our life?
GOD’S WAY (all that is in accordance with His Will) is not just the best way, but the only way to safely travel toward our eternal home with Him. May we have confidence in following THE WAY of God, as we trust in Jesus Who is “THE WAY” and the only access to the Father. (John 14:6) Let there be no delay or hesitation in running in THE WAY God has lovingly and wisely laid before us.
Have a great day KNOWING GOD’S DIRECTIONS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT!

Indebted!
When someone does something for us we may feel indebted to them. That sense of indebtedness generally causes us to honor and value those individuals. We also would most likely seek to PLEASE them by the way we act toward them or the SERVICE we might offer on their behalf.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome he stated…
“(12) So then, brothers, WE ARE DEBTORS, NOT TO THE FLESH, to live according to the flesh. (13) For IF YOU LIVE ACCORDING TO THE FLESH YOU WILL DIE, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” (Romans 8:12-13 ESV)
What has “the flesh” done for us? What inclinations has it lead us toward. What feelings has it aroused? What cravings has it produced? Down what road has “the flesh” led us? Has it always been good? Is not “the flesh” that which has challenged us more than the pressures of the world around us? Do we feel a sense of indebtedness to “the flesh” or do we rather seek the guidance and power that frees us from bondage to it?
For us to PLEASE and SERVE “the flesh” will only lead to death. On the other hand, what do we have because of God through our Lord Jesus Christ?
In the previous two verses we read…
“(10) But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, HE WHO RAISED CHRIST JESUS FROM THE DEAD WILL ALSO GIVE LIFE TO YOUR MORTAL BODIES through his Spirit who dwells in you.” (Romans 8:10-11 ESV)
Is this not where our sense of indebtedness should arise? Owing our life now and our eternal salvation to what Christ has provided, do we feel a sense of obligation to PLEASE and SERVE HIM? If we truly understand the bondage of the flesh and the blessing of freedom from it, the degree of indebtedness to Christ ought to be greatly felt. May we therefore in joyful gratitude seek to PLEASE and SERVE Him Who has removed our debt of sin by paying the price through His blood on the cross. It is truly all to Him that we owe!
Have a great day PLEASED TO SERVE THE LORD OF LIFE!

The Standing At Issue!
There was a politician who was asked where he stood with regard to a controversial issue. His response was that he had friends on both sides of the issue (for and against) and that he always stood with his friends. Is that what our life conveys with regard to our Christian faith? Do people wonder or is it clear which side we are on? Are we like those who want to stand with one foot in the boat and the other on the dock? Most of the time those who do so end up getting all wet.
After the Israelites made the golden calf while Moses was up on the mountain, Moses asked the question….
“…‘WHO IS ON THE LORD’S SIDE? Come to me.’….” (Exodus 32:26 ESV)
Joshua exhorted the nation of Israel to….
“…CHOOSE THIS DAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD.” (Joshua 24:15 ESV)
Jesus explicitly stated…
“WHOEVER IS NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” (Luke 11:23 ESV)
Peter and the other apostles emphatically declared…
“…‘WE MUST OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.’” (Acts 5:29 ESV)
And Paul asserted…
“For AM I NOW SEEKING THE APPROVAL OF MAN, OR OF GOD? Or am I trying to please man? IF I WERE STILL TRYING TO PLEASE MAN, I WOULD NOT BE A SERVANT OF CHRIST.” (Galatians 1:10 ESV)
Such has been the choice of the ages! Where do we stand? Have we stepped over to the LORD’S SIDE! Are we choosing “this day” (and every day) to SERVE THE LORD? Are we continuing to stand WITH JESUS? Have we resolved to remain OBEDIENT TO GOD’S desires? Is our mind set on seeking GOD’S APPROVAL by remaining a SERVANT OF CHRIST?
Where does our friendship cause us to stand? (James 4:4) Is it with the world or is it absolutely with God? Let us live in such a way that our standing with God becomes more and more evident to those around us. May our conduct always indicate we have made the choice to stand resolutely with Him and that we take that choice very seriously!
Have a great day STEADFASTLY MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD!

Steady As She Goes!
When a boat is sailing through rough waters, a narrow channel, or where obstacles must be watched for, it can be dangerous to rush on at full speed. In such situations it is with carefulness and steadiness that onward progress can still be made. Life can be pictured in much the same way. Sometimes we can see clear to press on at full speed while others situations call for watchful progression. However, how many lives are made unsteady simply due to FEAR? It seems that many people are constantly imagining the worst. They live in FEAR of things that may or may not ever be experienced. We may not know all that tomorrow holds (or even if there will be a tomorrow), but do we live afraid of what might be?
One of the psalmists noted with regard to the righteous in viewing God…
“(7) He is NOT AFRAID OF BAD NEWS; HIS HEART IS FIRM, TRUSTING in the LORD. (8) HIS HEART IS STEADY; he will NOT BE AFRAID, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.” (Psalm 112:7-8 ESV)
Another word beginning with “F” that is intended to replace FEAR is FAITH! Is that the case in our life? Even when bad things happen, have we come to trust God enough to know He will provide the strength necessary for pressing on and that ultimately He will work it out for us? (note Romans 8:28) The psalmist referred to one whose FAITH is established securely in the power of God. It is a TRUST in God that -- rather than leaving one in a state of confusion (though all may not be understood), panic and expectation of the worst -- is able to keep from being moved away from the expectation of Him working things out in accordance with His Will. It is a FAITH like Job who -- after receiving the bad news of his losses -- was still able to worship and praise God. (Job 1:20-21 ) It is a firm faith like that of Paul who -- knowing some, but not all of what he would face in Jerusalem -- could say, “But none of these things move me.” (Acts 20:24 NKJV) It is the kind of faith that is able to sustain and aid us in maintaining a firm focus on God while resolving to press on regardless of what is faced.
Though all news we receive may not be good, let us maintain a heart that is firmly fixed on FAITH in God. Even in the face of bad news, the good news is that God is fully aware and CAN BE TRUSTED -- according to His Will and timetable -- to work for our ultimate good. May such a FAITH keep our life steady as we go!
Have a great day GROWING IN THE FAITH THAT FREES FROM FEAR!

Inspiration And Perspiration!
When I am out on my long walks, on the front of my tee shirt my perspiration often forms in the shape of a small heart. I have even had people comment that my heart was showing. How is it in life that the heart we have becomes evident in a good way?
It has been stated that success is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration, an expression attributed to the inventor Thomas Edison. The idea has also been stated as being only one percept inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Either way we see where the main focus rests. Perhaps we could look at WORKS OF SERVICE in the same way. We can be inspired by needs we see around us, but it is the perspiration of carrying out the works to meet them that helps others see the genuine HEART FOR SERVICE we possess. In our Lord’s going to the cross, His LABOR OF LOVE on our behalf was accompanied by intense perspiration in the garden. (Luke 22:44) His heart of compassion for others was demonstrated again and again throughout His earthly ministry and ultimately on the cross. Do we share the same HEART FOR SERVICE? Are we eager to give of our time and PERSPIRATION on behalf of others?
Note what Paul observed among those at Thessalonica.
“(2) We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, (3) remembering before our God and Father YOUR WORK OF FAITH AND LABOR OF LOVE and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 ESV)
And the Hebrew writer encouraged…
“For God is not so unjust as to overlook YOUR WORK AND THE LOVE that you SHOWED for his sake IN SERVING THE SAINTS, as you still do.” (Hebrews 6:10 ESV)
Possessing a HEART FOR SERVICE can serve to inspire others toward the same as well as inspiring those helped to know LOVING CHRISTIAN SERVICE is still at work in this world. May our life be a proper mix of inspiration and perspiration for which others can be thankful and that glorifies God.
Have a great day HAVING A HEART THAT SHOWS!

Spreading Like Wildfire!
Gossip and rumors can spread like wildfire! Teens -- text messaging with thumbs seemingly going faster than a whirlwind -- can silently, but quickly spread the word about almost anything. With e-mail adults can react to situations and then broadcast a tirade to multiple recipients with just a click of the “send” button. By either of these means (and many others), just a quick word sent out about others and the rumor mill spins out of control. Once the tale has been ignited there is no telling where it will stop even if the one who sparked it wishes they could.
Could we not hope that such would be the way with good news? Should that not be our aim and prayer regarding the truth of God; that it could be sent out and forwarded and forwarded and forwarded, spreading quickly to others?
In Paul’s second letter to the church at Thessalonica he stated…
“Finally, brothers, pray for us, THAT THE WORD OF THE LORD MAY SPEED AHEAD and be honored, as happened among you,” (2 Thessalonians 3:1 ESV)
The idea behind the Greek word translated “speed” is “to run.” It is God’s Word that needs to be spread, running ahead of every other ideology of this world. Unlike gossip and rumors, the SPEEDING AHEAD of God’s Word will bring the greatest benefit where it is honored. Keeping God’s Word spreading rapidly can make it possible for others to hear and accept it before being deceived by other ideologies of our day. Coming to know the truth others will be prepared to readily reject that which is contrary to it and thus be spared being burned by what is false. Living in this “information age”, let us utilize the marvelous technology for letting the best news SPEED AHEAD, spreading like a wildfire that cannot be extinguished.
Have a great day KEEPING GOD’S GOOD NEWS GOING!

Integrity!
Integrity! What is it? The dictionary defines it as the “possession of firm principles: the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards.” [source: Encarta ® World English Dictionary, ©1998-2005 Microsoft Corporation]
Within that definition, a couple expressions to particularly note are: “POSSESSING” and “STEADFASTLY”. Genuine integrity is not for certain occasions or to be exercised only in certain places. One who exercises integrity in one area of life while neglecting it in another does not really POSSESS integrity. As Christians, integrity should be what we are known for. It is to be POSSESSED as a true essence of our godly character and STEADFASTLY held to wherever we are.
Perhaps some feel integrity is not as important in some areas of life as it is in others. Is that the picture of our life? Do we become so relaxed in some environments that we lose sight of the need for integrity even there?
Note the aim of David’s focus.
“(2) I will ponder the way that is blameless. Oh when will you come to me? I WILL WALK WITH INTEGRITY OF HEART WITHIN MY HOUSE; (3) I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me. (4) A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil.” (Psalm 101:2-4 ESV)
“I will walk with integrity of heart within my house.” Yes, even there. Not only did David recognize the need for integrity as king over God’s people, but also within his own household. Even there he was mindful of his conduct and dealings with others.
Within our homes there is as much need for dependability, honesty, and respect as in any other sphere of our activities. Like David, let us “ponder the way that is blameless” by being careful -- even within our own home -- what we choose to place before our eyes, STEADFASTLY seeking to know and pursue that which is truly good. May the POSSESSION of genuine integrity in all we do become so evident that it is the thing others will learn to expect and respect.
Have a great day MAINTAINING CONSISTENT CHRISTIAN CHARACTER!

This past Tuesday our youngest son (age 26) joined me for a climb up Mt. Townsend in the Olympic mountain range of our state of Washington. We had made the climb last year only to take pictures of clouds, each other in the fog, and the survey marker at the top to prove we’d been there. The clouds and fog kept us from getting the views and pictures of the world below. However, this year we were able to get a clear panoramic view of the whole area. What an awesome part of God’s beautiful creation! I even got a couple pictures of a small airplane flying below us. It was like being on top of the world, well worth the four mile climb up and four miles back, plus little excursions to some other peaks for pictures.
The next day -- as I was back into the office and my regular routines -- my walking around town felt like a breeze. My feet almost felt like they were flying compared to the previous day’s mountain trek. What was different? When I hike -- besides all my camera gear -- I tend to over-pack just in case there is a severe weather change, a delay, or some other problem encountered. On this trek I never pulled out even close to half the stuff packed in my backpack. I still had more than half the food I’d packed and lots of water when we returned, though with the sunshiny day (which provided the glorious views) I did drink a lot of water. Walking around town, even up some of our steeper streets, my walking felt almost effortless because I was NOT CARRYING THE WEIGHT of the day before. It was not there to hinder or slow my progress.
Reflecting on all this as I walked to the post office, then home to check e-mail, and back to my office again, I thought of the following exhortation from Hebrews.
“(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT, AND SIN WHICH CLINGS SO CLOSELY, and let us RUN WITH ENDURANCE THE RACE THAT IS SET BEFORE US, (2) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV)
How much of yesterday is still being carried on our back? There is no need for us to walk hindered by the past or the weight of sin. Let us CAST OFF that heavy pack -- looking to Jesus as the One who has made possible the lifting of the weight of the guilt of sin from us -- so that we can run the course God has set before us without hindrance. With His help in the battle against sin we can remain on top of the world.
Have a great day WALKING UNHINDERED IN CHRIST!

Remembered In Prayer!
The mindfulness of others. Knowing that others are praying for you. Is such not among the greatest ENCOURAGEMENTS and UPLIFTS of life? Paul reminded the Philippians that he kept them in his prayers.
He wrote…
“(3) I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, (4) ALWAYS IN EVERY PRAYER OF MINE FOR YOU ALL MAKING MY PRAYER WITH JOY, (5) because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.” (Philippians 1:3-5 ESV)
Though Paul was geographically separated from the brethren at Philippi, he was as close as a prayer. Though his situation could have discouraged these Christians, Paul continued to ENCOURAGE them in their faith by his letter and prayers. However, that prayerful ENCOURAGEMENT went both ways. Later on in this same chapter, after mentioning his attitude with regard to his imprisonment and his rejoicing in the fact that Christ was being proclaimed, we read…
“(19) for I know that THROUGH YOUR PRAYERS AND THE HELP OF THE SPIRIT OF JESUS CHRIST THIS WILL TURN OUT FOR MY DELIVERANCE, (20) as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.” (Philippians 1:19-20 ESV)
Mutual prayer and mutual ENCOURAGEMENT! That is what marked the relationship between these Christians and Paul. Prayer was their connection with God and each other. When we are praying people, how can it be any other way?
It has been a blessing to my own life to know that recipients of “teEn-MAIL” whom I have never met face to face from around the world let me know from time to time that I am in their prayers. As I sit here writing this focus I have one of those recent e-mails off to my side. I have also been thanked for my prayers. Know that you have them as well. Though geography may separate us we are all only a prayer away through our relationship in Christ. Thank you all for your continued interest in these daily focuses and for your ENCOURAGING prayers on behalf of this phase of ministry God has blessed me to take part in. Thank you for calling me “brother” and “friend” and for many other ENCOURAGING words. I thank God for the blessing you have become to my life. May we each continually allow God’s Word to inspire us to step out in faith for Him to use us in ways we might never have imagined. The “teEn-MAIL” connection continually reminds me that God thinks bigger than I do. May He be forever praised!
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE JOY OF PRAYER!

What Relationships Are For?
Bumper stickers can produce various reactions. Some make us laugh, others might cause us to say “Yes” in agreement, while others may make us mad, and still others could make us feel like crying. It is that latter type I have noticed on the back of a truck in our town. This bumper sticker reads: “If It Wasn’t For Marriage, Men And Women Would Have To Fight With Total Strangers!!!” Perhaps such would cause us to wonder about the kind of relationship the owner of that vehicle has with their spouse? Is the concept something they find amusing or is it sadly the reality for that marriage?
Certainly within relationships there are disagreements. Husbands and wives, siblings, neighbors, work associates, friends, and even brethren within the church don’t always see everything eye to eye. However -- to not be left with having to fight with total strangers -- is that what family, friends, or brethren are for?
How do we approach situations of disagreement? Fight and flight? (Speak our mind and then take off, uninterested in hearing another’s perspective.) Shrug and hug? (Having a “whatever” attitude that it makes no difference. I’ll love you anyway.) Muddy or study? (Confuse and stir up the waters of contention or instead commit to further study on the issue while seeking to maintain the relationship.)
We are to stand firm on the truth, but still speak it “in love” so that we can grow up in Christ. (Ephesians 4:15) Paul urged those at Rome to not quarrel over opinions. (Romans 14:1) In the previous chapter of that same letter Paul exhorted away from walking in quarreling and jealousy. (Romans 13:13)
In Paul’s instruction to Timothy we read…
“(23) HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOLISH, IGNORANT CONTROVERSIES; you know that THEY BREED QUARRELS. (24) And THE LORD’S SERVANT MUST NOT BE QUARRELSOME BUT KIND TO EVERYONE, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, (25) CORRECTING opponents WITH GENTLENESS. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, (26) and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.” (2 Timothy 2:23-24 ESV)
Then in his letter to Titus Paul wrote…
“(1) Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, (2) to speak evil of no one, to AVOID QUARRELING, TO BE GENTLE, AND TO SHOW PERFECT COURTESY TOWARD ALL PEOPLE.” (Titus 3:2 ESV)
From these two texts we have the exhortation toward KINDNESS, GENTLENESS, and COURTESY. May we recognize the responsibility and opportunity associated with all the relationships we may have, approaching them in a way that will be both beneficial to others and glorifying to God. The way we interacted with others -- whether it be within our family, neighborhood, the church, or some other sphere of associations -- will reflect how serious we are in striving to live like Christ and a child of God.
Remember Jesus said,
“Blessed are the PEACEMAKERS, for they shall be CALLED SONS OF GOD.” (Matthew 5:9 ESV)
Have a great day RESOLVNG TO BE A LOVER RATHER THAN A FIGHTER!

Inspired!
Inspired! Encouraged to do something. Having enthusiasm instilled for some activity or cause. Motivated to act. BUT FOR WHAT? We may inspire others or be inspired by them and feel good that it was possible to do so. However, is this taking place with regard to the most significant things?
Just a week ago I had a situation that caused me to reflect on this in my own life. On a recent Saturday morning -- as I was out on one of my long walks -- I encountered a woman I have known for a number of years through one of my community activities. She’s an individual who frequently waves at me when passing me in her car while I am walking. However, this particular Saturday she was not driving, but instead was walking as well. We were going different directions on opposite sides of the street and so she called across to me that I had inspired her to start walking. The very next morning (Sunday) -- as I was on my way to the church building -- I saw her walking again. Her walking was apparently becoming part of a daily routine. I had inspired her to walk, but even though she knows I am a Christian, I had not inspired her toward the spiritual activities I was on my way to take part in that morning. While others may be inspired to walk for the health benefits, it is the CHRISTIAN WALK that I need to be more mindful of striving to inspire others toward. It is the CHRISTIAN WALK (godliness) that holds benefit for both this life and the life to come! (1 Timothy 4:8)
May we bear in mind the INFLUENCE Jesus urged us to recognize our life is to be and toward what end!
“(13) YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. (14) YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. (15) Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. (16) In the same way, LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE BEFORE OTHERS, so THAT THEY MAY SEE your good works AND GIVE GLORY TO YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN.” (Matthew 5:13-16 ESV)
Living as “salt”; adding godly flavor, bring healing, and even bringing a preserving benefit. Being “light”; illuminating the way and bringing to light the brilliant truths of God’s Word. However, all of this being lived out in such a manner that the attention is moved beyond our own selves to others glorifying our Father in Heaven! May our actions and words be focused so as to inspire those around us toward spiritual things so that they also might begin the CHRISTIAN WALK that leads to a glorious eternity with Him.
Have a great day INSPIRED OF GOD TO INSPIRE OTHERS TO SEEK HIM!

What's It Take?
What's it take? What is the thing that will (or does) most motivate us to BOLDLY ACKNOWLEDGE our interest in JESUS?
There was a man we have come to refer to as “Joseph of Arimathea”. When we consider each of the four Gospel accounts together we find that he was a rich man, a prominent member of the council of the Sanhedrin, a good and upright man, one who had not consented to the decision of having Jesus condemned to death, and one who was waiting for the kingdom of God. We also note in John 19:38 that he was a disciple of Jesus, “BUT SECRETLY”, because he feared his fellow Jews.
However, we see a change take place in his disposition following Jesus’ death on the cross. Note what we read in Mark’s account.
“(42) And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, (43) Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, TOOK COURAGE AND WENT TO PILATE and asked for the body of Jesus.” (Mark 15:42-43 ESV)
The Greek translated “took courage” is a word that refers to boldness or daring. Joseph was bold. He dared to step out personally at this point. In so doing, Joseph was risking his standing with the Council, he was risking his reputation, and was now even ready to risk the possibility of death in aligning himself with Jesus.
What caused Joseph to go from being a “secret” disciple, to a more visible one? It may be that for him Jesus’ death -- this great injustice based on hatred and false testimony -- was the last straw.
Joseph ended up being accompanied by Nicodemus (John 19:39) who was a Pharisee (John 3:1) and also a member of the Council (John 3:1). Remember Nicodemus had earlier come to Jesus “at night” (John 3:1-2). We also read of him attempting to offer some defense for Jesus at one point (John 7:45-52). However, following Jesus’ death, Nicodemus too was finally ready to STEP FORWARD AND BE NUMBERED among the Lord’s followers.
For Paul it appears to have been the realization of God’s tremendous grace lavished upon him which continued to motivate him to press on as A BOLD PROCLAIMER of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
What aspect of Jesus touches us most? Something about His life? Something relating to His death? Something touching the glorious hope based on the reality of His resurrection? His magnanimous love? His adequate atonement? What? What motivates us to BOLDLY ACKNOWLEDGE we are a disciple of JESUS?
Some who shrunk back at one point grew to be MORE BOLD. May we be like those the Hebrew writer referred to who…
“…are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of THOSE WHO HAVE FAITH AND PRESERVE THEIR SOULS.” (Hebrews 10:39 ESV)
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR DISCIPLESHIP TO JESUS!

A Prayer For Each Day!
As Paul wrote to the church at Thessalonica, he exhorted them to “pray without ceasing”. (1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV) What Paul encouraged was a spirit of prayer always accompanying them through life. What a wonderful blessing we have that as we go through all the activities of each day, we can do so knowing God is fully aware of what is going on in our life and that we can talk to Him anytime and anywhere. This can be done either audibly or silently. Still it is nice to also have established times for purposeful prayer besides the offering of thanks at meal times. Several men meet with me each Friday morning for prayer and together we encourage one another and pray through the “prayer list” of our church bulletin. We have been doing this since November of 1995 and have missed very few Fridays since we began. An established time of prayer shared by my wife and I is each night before going to sleep. Prayer ought to be a very integral part of our Christian walk.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he made a specific prayer request that I believe we would each do well to consider in our own prayers as we begin each new day.
We read…
“(2) Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (3) At the same time, PRAY ALSO FOR US, THAT GOD MAY OPEN TO US A DOOR FOR THE WORD, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison -- (4) THAT I MAY MAKE IT CLEAR, which is how I ought to speak.” (Colossians 4:2-4 ESV)
Prayer for OPEN DOORS; opportunities to share with others about Jesus. Though Paul was a prisoner, that did not cause him to lose his desire and hope for OPEN DOORS for sharing the Gospel. For us to begin the day with such a request of God should serve to then open our hearts and our eyes to the opportunities we will have through the encounters of the day. It may be an opportunity just to mention something about Jesus. It might be a chance to encourage or serve in the Name of Jesus. Or it may be a situation where we can connect with another in such a way that an OPEN DOOR is provided for sharing a deeper look into the truths of Jesus as Lord and Savior. Having such as the earnest prayer of our heart will ready us for the rising of such occasions through the day. May the Lord be glorified and praised in the process!
Have a great day PREPARED BY PRAYER TO CARE AND SHARE!

Higher Cost!
It has been suggested that with the continually rising cost of college and university tuition, education is becoming almost as expensive as ignorance. However, ignorance still comes at the highest cost, especially with regard to spiritual matters. We may make it through our lifetime just fine without being aware of geometry’s Pythagorean theorem, being able to list and define the laws of physics, or recite the facts of some other study. Those established truths can be at work all around us without our giving them much thought. Now, please understand I am by no means trying to discourage the pursuit of a good education and the knowledge that will enhance skills relating to professions that might be chosen. However, when it comes to the Will of God, being ignorant of those truths will adversely impact life for both now and eternity.
Note the charge against God’s own people during the time of Hosea.
“MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (Hosea 4:6 ESV)
There is the need to recognize where ignorance ultimately places oneself.
“(17) Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. (18) They are darkened in their understanding, ALIENATED FROM THE LIFE OF GOD BECAUSE OF THE IGNORANCE THAT IS IN THEM, due to their hardness of heart.” (Ephesians 4:17-18 ESV)
Destroyed for lack of knowledge! The rejection of knowledge placed in a position to be rejected by God! Hardened hearts and ignorance brought about being alienated from the life of God! Futile was the label for trying to live life based on their own thinking! Devastating stuff when we consider our eternal destiny hinges on the relationship one has with God!
In the setting of the LONG RANGE GOALS of life, let us keep in mind that which is of ETERNAL SIGNIFICANCE. Our “higher education” of the things of God will be found to cost much less in the long run than the higher cost of rejecting it.
Rejecting the things Paul had once gloried in (note Philippians 3:4-6), he set his focus on KNOWING CHRIST as intimately as possible. All else was nothing compared to “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus” as Lord. (Philippians 3:8)
Paul went on to express his aim by saying…
“(10) that I may KNOW HIM and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, (11) THAT BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE I MAY ATTAIN THE RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD.” (Philippians 3:10-11 ESV)
May we share that LONG RANG GOAL as we seek to maintain a closer relationship with the Lord and His Will. It is that relationship that will enhance life now and provide the assurance of a glorious eternity with Him.

He Can Work It Out!
God has a marvelous way of working things toward His ends. Sometimes when we are in the midst of things we don’t see it, but in time it often becomes clear that God was ultimately working out His Will. As the church began to grow during the first century, the fellowship enjoyed was very sweet. (i.e. Acts 2:46-47; Acts 4:32-35) However, those opposed to the message of salvation in Christ seemed determined to squelch that spirit and disrupt the openness of sharing the message. Following the stoning of Stephen, a great persecution began to scatter the believers, except for the Apostles who remained in Jerusalem. (Acts 8:1) Such could have been perceived by some as being counter productive. However, that was far from being the case.
We read…
“Now those who were scattered WENT ABOUT PREACHING THE WORD.” (Acts 8:4 ESV)
That was the beginning of the fulfillment of what the Lord had declared to His disciples prior to His ascension to heaven. (Acts 1:8) The scattering did not stop the growth, but rather enhanced the opportunity for spreading the message of Jesus.
Note the following account I came across in a recent church publication. It provides another example that encourages us to look for what God will work out of the situations we might see as unfortunate.
==========
The train blew its whistle and wove its way along the winding rails of the hometown of a brother in Hungary. A communist customs agent came through checking all the baggage. The sack of Bibles sat at our brother’s feet. By his side lay his own personal Bible with notes and sermon outlines. The customs agent looked at the sack first. He opened it and thumbed through the pages of the Bible and began to sail them out the window of the speeding train. As if for spite, the agent looked down at the open, used (obviously personal) Bible of our brother, grabbed it, and sailed it out the window to parts unknown. For three years our brother bemoaned the fact that his good Bible with so many notes and sermons was no longer his constant companion. “I believe Romans 8:28, but, Lord, how can this work out for good?” he wondered. One day he received his personal Bible through the mail. A letter enclosed read, “Dear Brother in Christ: Thank you, thank you, for the use of your Bible. I found it by the railroad three years ago. I have kept it, read it, and studied it often. My family and I have written many Scriptures down on paper and many more in our hearts. We cannot thank you enough, for now maybe we can go to heaven. … But brother, please forgive me for keeping your Bible so long. I thought that if I did not read it now, I might never again find a Bible to read.” “Oh, Great God and Father of us all, forgive me for my doubting,” wept our Hungarian brother.
==========
How much do we believe what Paul encouraged?
“And we know that FOR THOSE WHO LOVE GOD ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD, for those who are called ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE.” (Romans 8:28 ESV)
It is true that not everything is good. However, even in those things might be hidden the seed of something amazing. The devil loves when we are made to feel we are (or will be) defeated. May we never give him that satisfaction. Instead, even though we may not be able to see how, let us still trust in God’s power to work out His Will! Our loss for the moment could be for the Kingdom’s gain.
Have a great day ALWAYS LIVING WITH TRUSTING ANTICIPATION OF GOD’S GOOD!

Valuation!
Valuation is the appraisal or determining of the VALUE or price of something. I recently came across some statistical information relating to the VALUE of a man and though this information may date back a few years there is a contrast I would like us to reflect on.
-- Considering the chemical contents of the human body, for an individual weighing 150 pounds, the following estimates have been made of a man’s worth: in the 1930s, 98 cents; in the 1960s, $3.50; and in the 1970s, $5.60. With over 60 percent of the body’s weight being water (which would be free).
-- Then with a focus on education some values were determined by the Institute of Life Insurance. The institute -- valuing a man in terms of his potential life income -- noted the worth as follows: A graduate from grade school could expect to earn $219,000 in a normal lifetime; $303,000 for a high school graduate, and $444,000 for a college graduate.
-- Then, when atomic power was harnessed, figuring that the atoms in the human body could produce 11,400,000 kilowatts of power per pound if harnessed, a man weighing 150 pounds would be worth $85,500,000,000.
[Source: adapted from the “Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations”, compiled by Paul Lee Tan, © 1979, Garland TX: Bible Communications]
Based on some of this information, perhaps we can see why some see little VALUE in human life today. Considering the above estimations, the determination of VALUE changed based upon the view of either makeup or productivity associated with the human life. However, each of these estimations were in accordance with man’s valuation. What is the WORTH God has demonstrated?
Jesus stated…
“For GOD SO LOVED the world, that HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)
And Peter noted…
“(18) knowing that YOU WERE RANSOMED [or redeemed] from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, (19) but WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV)
Peter clearly contrasted the price (and VALUE) of our redemption from the things the world values (i.e. silver and gold) with the “precious blood” of our Lord Jesus Christ. To know GOD VALUES US in such a way ought to draw us closer to Him and His Will. It should also impact the way we look at others around us. May we SEE AND VALUE as God does!
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY OUR WORTH IN THE EYES OF GOD!

Mind Trips!
Some people take “armchair” excursions from the comfort and safety of their own home. They tour the world by watching travel videos or by reading books and magazines about other places. It is an inexpensive way to see this world’s sights. However, there is a journey of the mind that can be quite costly if the wrong excursions are being made.
What’s on our mind? When our mind goes someplace, what is that place? Some people spend much time with their mind focused on the past while others keep the mind focused on the future and still others maintain a focus on the present with little thought for things to come. There are also those who spend a lot of time with their mind in the clouds, dreaming of things they may never put forth the effort toward. Then there are people whose mind seems to remain in the gutter. It has also been noted how some are so heavenly minded that they are of no earthly good, meaning they are so absorbed with thinking of the eternal home they have lost sight of what is to be accomplished while living in the earthly realm. Yes, many a varied journey can be taken in the mind and that is just where the journey of the life begins to take shape.
Paul exhorted those at Colossae to…
“SET YOUR MINDS ON THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE, NOT ON THINGS THAT ARE ON EARTH.” (Colossians 3:2 ESV)
The contrast here is between an earthly (worldly) mind and a heavenly (godly or spiritual) mind. What are the thoughts that are powering and setting the course of our life? Paul went on to mention several things he referred to as “earthly” that needed to be “put to death” (Colossians 3:5) or -- as the Greek implies -- destroy the strength of or deprive of their power. The journey through those things leads to meeting the wrath of God (Colossians 3:6); a very costly trip! Where the mind wanders impacts the wandering of the life. Where the mind journeys begins to set the course of our life walk. If the trip of the mind takes us in the wrong direction the life itself will be tripped up. We must therefore be continually mindful of WHERE WE CHOOSE TO TAKE OUR MIND.
Categorically speaking, here is what should characterize our thoughts!
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)
If our thoughts don’t fall under one of those headings then our focus has been set too low. The things of God, Heaven, and Christian living fall into those categories. Let us lift our minds heavenward enough to serve the purposes of God presently while trusting His promises for the glorious eternity that awaits us. Minding the paths of the mind will enhance the joy of life’s journey.
Have a great day TAKING THE MIND TO GODLY PLACES!

Dealt And Done With!
There are many things in life of which we might weary of having to continue to deal. When those occasions occur we may even be heard moaning, “Not again!” Such are things we wish to be dealt with and done with once and for all! However, how much determination do we have for making it so and appreciation for means that might be provided?
Solomon encouraged…
“BY STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS INIQUITY IS ATONED FOR, and by the fear of the LORD one turns away from evil.” (Proverbs 16:6 ESV)
Sin deserves punishment. Solomon acknowledged that in the previous verse. However, God -- because of His steadfast love and faithfulness -- has provided the means for atonement from sin. For us living this side of the cross we have that atonement in its most adequate form through the blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Jesus gave Himself as the atoning sacrifice not only for our sins, but also for those of the world. (1 John 2:2) That sacrifice for sin was ONCE FOR ALL (Romans 6:10; Hebrews 10:10) and is COMPLETELY ADEQUATE to deal with sin. The real issue for us to come to grips with is: ARE WE DONE WITH IT?!!!
To know that our sins are dealt with completely by the power of the blood of Jesus is not to make us feel comfortable about sin. On the contrary, sin should make us very uncomfortable! We are not “to continue in sin that grace may abound” (Romans 6:1), but are instead to acknowledge that God is to be feared because of sin. We would not want to weary God of extending His grace! Properly viewing God should cause us to CONTINUE TURNING AWAY FROM EVIL. Jesus died for us and we are to die to sin. (Romans 6:2) In that sixth chapter of Romans Paul went on to point out how this is what was to have taken place when we were “baptized into Christ” (Romans 6:3); being “buried with” Him through baptism (Romans 6:4) so that we could rise to “walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)
Are we going to have sin to confess? Yes! (note 1 John 1:8-9) Will we still have need for repentance? Yes! It is the aim of our heart of which we need to be mindful. The way for us to show our greatest appreciation for God’s grace that has provided in Christ the ADEQUATE means of dealing with our sin is to STRIVE TO BE DONE WITH IT in our life. As we walk in Christ may our life reflect the reality of being “dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:11)
Have a great day LIVING TO PRAISE GOD FOR FULL ATONEMENT IN CHRIST!

Which Comes First?
God has given us commands. He has revealed to us many things we must be mindful of doing. And God expects us to faithfully keep His commands. But is the motivation for our obedience and service based solely on command or is it more of a response to all the things God has provided? What comes first -- God’s GRACE because we keep DOING or our DOING because of His GRACE?
Paul, as he looked at his life and his work, stated:
“(9) For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. (10) But BY THE GRACE OF GOD I AM WHAT I AM, AND HIS GRACE TOWARD ME WAS NOT IN VAIN. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:9-10 ESV)
Remembering his life as a persecutor, Paul knew he did not deserve God’s grace. We didn’t deserve it either because of sin in our lives. But God has provided grace because we need it and His hope is that it will be a motivating factor in responding to Him. God’s grace impacted Paul’s life. Grace motivated Paul to press on in his labors for the Lord even when he faced opposition. Grace had its proper affect on Paul’s life.
The point is this: We don’t have GRACE because of what we DO. Rather we DO because of GRACE. We see how that power worked in Paul’s life and it is to be working in our lives as well. The affect of God’s grace should empower us to respond properly to all of life. Note what Paul wrote to Titus:
“(11) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, (12) TRAINING US TO RENOUNCE UNGODLINESS AND WORLDLY PASSIONS, AND TO LIVE SELF-CONTROLLED, UPRIGHT, AND GODLY LIVES IN THIS PRESENT AGE, (13) waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (14) who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” (Titus 2:11-14 ESV)
Let us continue to allow God’s grace to train (or teach) us to renounce and say no to what is out of place with the Christian walk. May God’s grace always have His intended effect on our life. Serving with eagerness will reveal how appreciative we are of the grace God has extended. Let it be a powerful motivator in our life.
Have a great day AFFECTED BY GOD’S GLORIOUS GRACE!

Where We Live!
While driving through another town a couple months ago, I noticed a large billboard that gave the name of the town and then stated, “WHERE OPPORTUNITY LIVES!” Was it an encouragement for people living there to remain? Was it an enticement for others to move there? How many are still looking for a “LAND OF OPPORTUNITY”? That desire is at the foundation of what began to grow the country of the United States of America. It is why some still would like to come here. That particular town we were driving through was one our family had lived in quite a number of years ago, and I know there were (and most likely still are) people who were unemployed. I also know there have been businesses there that have struggled economically. Jobs for some have come and gone and in some cases come back again. There may be opportunities, but perhaps not everyone has been able to find them. Maybe it somewhat depends on how and for what one is looking.
Opportunities! People search near and people search far and wonder where they are. Opportunity sometimes knocks and is ignored. There are times opportunity is walked by without ever noticing it. In the rush to take care of the urgent, sometimes the important is missed. The reality for us as Christians is that there are truly opportunities all around us for impacting the lives of others in both small and huge ways. Are our eyes (and hearts) being kept open to them?
Paul encouraged those at Galatia…
“(9) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, let us DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)
More and more as I walk around the community where we live and engage in conversation with others I am struck by all the opportunities I had driven by in the past. As we go about our daily lives we need to recognize how much we are in the midst of the LAND OF OPPORTUNITY to serve the purposes of God in our encounters along the way. We don’t always have to go very far if we will just be attentive to those among whom we live on a daily basis. Because “now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2), before the opportunity is lost for those around us, let us acknowledge that now is the time and where we live is the place to be about the good work of God.
Have a great day LIVING FOR CHRIST WHERE WE ARE!

What Is Feared?
There are many phobias (strong fears or dislikes) people may have. Though some phobias can be caused by some psychosomatic illness, others could be the result of previous traumatic experiences or merely be related to perceptions of what “might” be. In the dark it is easy to fear all kinds of things, both real or imagined. Wandering in the dark can pose some real dangers. Even a little bit of light can generally reduce the danger and ease some of that fear. However, some phobias may be produced simply due to a perception one “chooses” to hold.
Someone has said, “We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when people are afraid of the light.” [anonymous quote]
Who would not like light? Who would prefer darkness over light? Well, an escaping convict would be fearful of the light being cast about by the searchlight of the guards. A thief will hide in the bushes out of fear of being exposed by the headlights of passing cars. The mugger prefers the darkness of the alleys to the lighted main streets where they might be spotted. And those who don’t want the truth prefer the darkness of ignorance or denial.
Jesus described this latter group of “light-o-phobics” as follows.
“(19) And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and PEOPLE LOVED THE DARKNESS rather than the light BECAUSE THEIR DEEDS WERE EVIL. (20) For everyone who does wicked things HATES THE LIGHT and DOES NOT COME TO THE LIGHT, LEST his deeds should BE EXPOSED. (21) But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been carried out in God.” (John 3:19-21 ESV)
These “light-o-phobics” did not like the light. They did not want to come into the light. They did not want to be exposed by the light. Darkness was their cover and they liked it that way. However, the reality with which all must come to grips is that the darkness is as light to God (Psalm 139:12) and LIGHT IS MORE POWERFUL than darkness.
How much do we LOVE LIGHT? How much do we love the truth and desire to bask in it its rays? How much do we appreciate the clarity the LIGHT OF JESUS brings to life? Do we truly enjoy HIS LIGHT? Like a moth, are we continually drawn to THAT LIGHT?
Jesus also stated…
“(33) No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. (34) Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness. (35) Therefore BE CAREFUL lest the light in you be darkness. (36) If then your WHOLE BODY IS FULL OF LIGHT, having no part dark, it WILL BE WHOLLY BRIGHT, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.” (Luke 11:33-36 ESV)
May we eagerly seek for the LIGHT OF JESUS to continually shine on us and in us. This LIGHT OF TRUTH will serve to powerfully dispel the fears that could otherwise plague our life. May we always welcome His illumination.
Have a great day JOYFULLY BASKING IN THE LIGHT OF THE SON!

Clearing The Windows!
There was a man who was once seen busily cleaning his windows on a very cold morning in the middle of winter. When asked what he was doing he respond that he was cleaning the frost from his windows, but it seemed that as fast as he cleared it off it came right back again. His friend kindly told him to forget the windows for a moment and kindle his fire. The windows would then clear themselves.
When FAITH is allowed to grow cold, it becomes difficult to see as we ought. The coldness of this dark world can begin to frost our view and wiping our eyes or squinting harder is not going to remedy the problem. Our ability to see as we should actually begins within. What is needed is to kindle FAITH’S FIRE and then the fog will begin to clear by itself.
Referring to Moses, the Hebrew writer stated…
“By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for HE ENDURED AS SEEING HIM WHO IS INVISIBLE.” (Hebrews 11:27 ESV)
Though Moses had been faced with an angry unrelenting Pharaoh, it was God and His power that Moses’ vision was able to perceive. It is FAITH that provides the vision to see what others might not see. Faith clears the windows of our mind in order to see beyond the doorstep of our own abilities and even beyond the valleys of this life’s challenging circumstances to the mountains of God majestic glory and power at work in and for us.
As the Hebrew writer defined faith…
“Now FAITH IS the assurance of things hoped for, THE CONVICTION OF THINGS NOT SEEN.” (Hebrews 11:1 ESV)
We don’t believe because we see, but rather are enabled to see because we believe! FAITH’S FIRE needs to be kept burning brighter and brighter for our conviction to remain strong and our vision to become clearer and clearer.
So, with what shall we stoke the fire of FAITH? Peter noted the addition of virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7) He also stated that without these qualities we will be “nearsighted” and “blind” to seeing as we ought. (2 Peter 1:9) It is these qualities that will increase our effectiveness and fruitfulness “in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:8 ESV) May our FAITH continually be kept ablaze that the windows through which we look at life and toward eternity may remain clear.
Have a great day STOKING THE FIRE OF FAITH!

Basis Of Choice!
The question has sometimes been asked, “What has love got to do with it?” The reality is that love should have much to do with about almost everything in life. However, what is love to us? Is it a verb or merely a feeling? Is it a choice or just a reaction or response to the way others are? Many focus on and make their choices based on the feeling of love. If the feeling is not there, then neither is the love. But aren’t the feelings the fruit of the verb to BE LOVING? The choice to love can be made in spite of the feelings (i.e. Matthew 5:44) and that choice can provide the basis on which the feelings could actually begin to develop. The reality in this world is that too many begin at the wrong place. If we get this backwards and base our choices merely on our feelings rather than a determination to BE LOVING, we will have missed what being a disciple of Jesus is all about.
Take to heart the manner in which Jesus addressed our choice to BE LOVING.
“(43) You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ (44) But I say to you, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES and PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU, (45) so that you may BE SONS OF YOUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. (46) For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet only your brothers, WHAT MORE ARE YOU DOING THAN OTHERS? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? (48) You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:43-48 ESV)
Is loving enemies and praying for those who persecute us going to be the outgrowth of some natural feeling drawing us to them? Is not the natural tendency either to draw away or to retaliate? To BE LOVING is the choice we make BECAUSE OF WHO WE ARE rather than who others are or what they might have done. This is the love exemplified as Jesus walked this earth. It is also the love God has displayed through the providing of His gracious blessings (Matthew 5:45), including the forgiveness and salvation we do not deserve. May the genuineness of being children of the Father be exhibited through our choice to love as He has loved.
Have a great day KEEPING LOVE’S FOUNDATION IN PLACE!
