Being Infectious!
Germs. They are all around us. Therefore we often see or hear reminders to wash our hands. Though we were once encouraged to cover our mouths when we coughed or sneezed, now we are being told to do so into our sleeve to guard against our hands passing on germs to others through everything else we touch. Some people with poor immune systems have to be very careful and some germs are more infectious than others. However, even though we try to eat healthily, keep from getting chilled, or are very careful about sanitizing our hands, dishes, and food preparation surfaces, there is no guarantee that we won’t catch something.
If we can choose what we will be a carrier of and what we might infect others with, let it be a spirit of JOY. Our attitude in the way we go about daily tasks, the manner in which we interact with others, and the smiles and simple kindness we do along the way each day -- all have great potential to make a difference in another’s outlook on life. I was reminded of this not long ago when on a rainy day I (on an impulse) offered my umbrella to a woman and her two children who were walking the opposite direction I was going. Though she did not accept it from me, saying they were fine, the next day I encountered the woman again and she thanked me once more for having offered the umbrella, stating she was thankful her son had witnessed it to see that there are still decent people in this world.
We may not know the struggles being experienced by those we encounter, but living to serve and reveal how Christians have something to be JOYFUL about all the time, can become infectious in our encounters with others. Genuine JOY can be extremely powerful!
Solomon noted…
“A JOYFUL HEART IS GOOD MEDICINE, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22 ESV)
Possessing a JOYFUL HEART will be good for ourselves, but it can also be infectious with those with whom we come into contact. Such a disposition can cause those around us to wonder why we can have such a JOYFUL spirit and we may have the opportunity to share how the blessings we have received in Christ bring a JOY that continues in spite of the challenges that life may present. May the genuine JOY of our salvation be evident all along life’s way.
Have a great day SPREADING THE GERM OF A GODLY JOY!

A Problem With Humility!
Moses was a man described as being “very meek” (ESV) or “very humble” (NASB, NKJV NIV, NLT), “more than all people who were on the face of the earth.” (Numbers 12:3 ESV) Imagine such a distinction above all! If one knew they had such a distinction above others, for how long might they remain humble? It is not so easy to remain humble while acknowledging one’s humility. A humble character just needs to exist as the byproduct of other focuses and principles of living being properly maintained. However, there is perhaps another problem that can arise from a humble view of self.
Note Moses’ initial response when God called him to go to Egypt.
“But Moses said to God, ‘WHO AM I THAT I SHOULD GO to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’” (Exodus 3:11 ESV)
“WHO AM I?” Have we asked it? Have we thought it? Have those words been indicative of a feeling of not being the right person for the job? Is it not possible that in guarding against thinking too highly of ourselves (Romans 12:3) we could go to the other extreme of thinking we are good for nothing? We must remember our significance to God and the amazing ways in which He desires and is able to utilize us in His work. To think of ourselves with the measure of faith we possess (Romans 12:3) would indicate a sense of RELIANCE ON GOD rather than self. Like Paul we can step forward in valuable service for God knowing that our competence comes from Him! (2 Corinthians 3:5-6)
Paul encouraged Timothy…
“(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God MAY BE COMPETENT, EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
WHO AM I? WHO ARE YOU? A child OF GOD, loved BY GOD, valued BY GOD, equipped BY GOD, and entrusted BY GOD to do the works we were created in Christ Jesus to do. (Ephesians 2:10) May we humbly surrender our will to His that His Work and Will may be done in and through us.
Have a great day BEING THE ONE TO WORK FOR GOD WHERE WE ARE!

Is Knowledge Enough?
Are you impressed by knowledge? Do you hold those who have Masters and Doctorate degrees in high regard? If I told you the phases of cell reproduction would you be impressed? They are “interphase”, “prophase”, “metaphase”, “anaphase”, and “telophase.” It was in High School I learned those phases and recalled them again for one of my college science classes, but why do I still remember them? I made up the acronym “IPMAT” so I could remember these phases and their order. Now you know that I know them, but can I explain the process to you? No! You see, I have the knowledge of what the phases are called, but I do not have the wisdom or understanding to tell you how the process all works.
Paul referred to those who were “ALWAYS LEARNING AND NEVER ABLE TO ARRIVE AT A KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH.” (2 Timothy 3:7 ESV) Maybe we could refer to these as “educated fools” because they sought knowledge, but apparently had not learned how to use that knowledge to come to an UNDERSTANDING of the truth. We might be able to impress people with our ability to remember facts and trivia (and I enjoy watching “Jeopardy”), but the real need is for WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING. The knowledge is beneficial when we KNOW HOW TO APPLY IT to our life.
With regard to WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING Solomon exhorted…
“(6) Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. (7) The beginning of wisdom is this: GET WISDOM, AND WHATEVER YOU GET, GET INSIGHT. (8) PRIZE HER HIGHLY, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. (9) She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.” (Proverbs 4:6-9 ESV)
Verse 7 from the New Living Translation reads, “Getting wisdom is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO! And whatever else you do, get good judgment.” [NLT © 1997, Tyndale House]
And the New International Version reads, “Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. THOUGH IT COST ALL YOU HAVE, get understanding.” [NIV, © 1996, 1984, Zondervan]
In your pursuit of knowledge, know what will make the difference. Ask God for WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING as you sort through all the knowledge. And keep Paul’s warning in mind:
“(20) O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and CONTRADICTIONS OF WHAT IS FALSELY CALLED ‘KNOWLEDGE,’ (21) for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you." (1 Timothy 6:20-21 ESV)
Have a great day WISELY APPLYING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED!

Ticker Talk!
Having a HEART to HEART talk with others refers to HEARTS being drawn together. It is indicative of having an intimate, honest, and open conversation with others. However, our words may not always convey what is truly held within. Our HEART is not as open to the view of others as it is to God. Therefore, for the sake of our relationship with Him, and to safeguard the words and actions of our life, we must be serious with regard to what is in the HEART. Just as problems with our physical HEART spell serious problems for our life, so it is true even more so spiritually speaking. When the rhythm of the body’s ticker gets out of sync, the body suffers for it as various functions and mobility are impaired. When our spiritual ticker is not right we also become spiritually (and even emotionally) impaired to the point of being in eternal trouble. Held within the HEART is what we truly think, love, and really believe! If there’s a malfunction there, we have a serious problem! Therefore, when the “ticker talks” what does it say? If its language is not right we may be in need of some radical HEART surgery.
Remember David’s statement that…
“THE FOOL SAYS IN HIS HEART, ‘THERE IS NO GOD.’ They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none who does good.” (Psalm 53:1 ESV) [also stated in Psalm 14:1]
That’s the talk of one ticker! Perhaps such a one need say nothing verbally because the life itself lived without any acknowledgement of God is revealing enough as to what the HEART is saying.
In Jeremiah we read the following regarding some of the nation of Israel.
“THEY DO NOT SAY IN THEIR HEARTS, ‘LET US FEAR THE LORD OUR GOD, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’” (Jeremiah 5:24 ESV)
That would seem to imply that the HEART ought to say, “Let us fear the Lord our God.” For the HEART to think, love, and really believe the Sovereignty of God, that would have a dynamic impact on what is said and done. Is that the speech pouring forth from our HEART?
Jesus stated…
“The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART HIS MOUTH SPEAKS.” (Luke 6:45 ESV)
The mouth may do the speaking, but the fountain from which it all comes is THE HEART! Do we have an abundance of the right stuff held there? Aside from our words and visible actions, what is it our HEART truly speaks to us? May its proper acknowledgment of God be the basis for every action and word associated with our daily life. In this way we will be able to maintain a HEART to HEART connection with God and can be drawn into the same with others.
Have a great day KEEPING THE RIGHT STUFF COURSING OUR LIFE VEINS!

Thoughtless Action!
There are times our actions get us into trouble because we have failed to first think things through. Sometimes the response, “But I didn’t think!” is met by a, “Well, maybe you should!” Mindless activity is not a good way to live life. However, could there be some proper and significant action that should take place without giving it much thought?
What about LOVE? When LOVE is genuine, how much does it have to think before acting? Consider the parent who -- without a moment’s hesitation -- steps into danger’s path in order to protect their child. Could the same kind of LOVE be evident in the actions of a husband or wife? How about a brother or sister? Then what about between brothers and sisters in Christ?
James exhorted…
“(15) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (16) and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ WITHOUT GIVING THEM THE THINGS NEEDED for the body, WHAT GOOD IS THAT?” (James 2:15-16 ESV)
When the need is seen and no help is given, might we ask, “Where is the LOVE?” Genuine LOVE doesn’t have to think too long. Where LOVE exists, if what can be given is needed, it is to be given! [note also Proverbs 3:27-28 and 1 John 3:16-18] If we have to think too much about what we are giving we may need to reconsider the relationship.
Remember Paul’s exemplary attitude.
“I WILL MOST GLADLY SPEND AND BE SPENT FOR YOUR SOULS. IF I LOVE YOU MORE, AM I TO BE LOVED LESS?” (2 Corinthians 12:15 ESV)
It was a GODLY LOVE Paul had developed for others that prompted the giving of himself and whatever he had. It is LOVE that prompted God to provide His blessings for us. Where do we go from there?
John stated…
“WE LOVE BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.” (1 John 4:19)
We have good reason to LOVE! Knowing how much we are loved should make it easier for us to LOVE. Does our life exhibit actions that are a natural outpouring of a genuine GODLY LOVE? May the LOVE of God continually move us into actions that glorify Him, reveal our genuine appreciation for His LOVE, and bring benefit to others. Our very actions may be the first taste some people get of what the LOVE OF GOD is all about!
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD’S LOVE TO PASS THROUGH US TO OTHERS!

The Artist's Work!
I love to look at paintings and other forms of artwork especially because I do not have that kind of talent. I am always amazed at the ability of artists who paint masterpieces which seem to draw the viewer right into the picture. It is also intriguing how some artists place their SIGNATURE on a corner of the canvas in a way that blends it in so as to not detract from the work itself. Though there are some artists and sculptors whose style has become so well known that their works are easily recognizable, that SIGNATURE directly and unquestionably identifies the artist with his or her work.
Have you ever considered the fact that God doesn’t place a sign with His name on it at the base of a majestic mountain? He doesn’t have to because no one else makes mountains. The same goes for the colorful meadows in their natural beauty and the ocean beaches and mountain streams, etc. On the canvas of this world and universe, the SIGNATURE of God’s masterful design and wisdom is unquestionably evident.
In the psalms we read…
“The heavens DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD, and the sky above PROCLAIMS HIS HANDIWORK.” (Psalm 19:1 ESV)
And…
“(1) Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! (2) Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! (3) For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. (4) IN HIS HAND ARE THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH; THE HEIGHTS OF THE MOUNTAINS ARE HIS ALSO. (5) THE SEA IS HIS, FOR HE MADE IT, AND HIS HANDS FORMED THE DRY LAND.” (Psalm 95:1-5 ESV)
Some of the artwork of man comes with a high price. God has placed us within His beautiful creation to enjoy it for free. It is one of His gifts. May we ever acknowledge our Maker and praise Him for all His awesome works! They have been and are done with us in mind!
Have a great day RECOGNIZING HIS MASTERPIECES!

Amidst The Voices!
We are surround by voices calling for this and calling for that, telling us we can do this and we can’t do that, “nay” sayers, “yea” sayers, dooms dayers, and “anything goes” sayers. To what is our ear turned toward? What are the messages being allowed to impact us either positively or negatively? Are we brought down by what others say or do we find some ENCOURAGEMENT regardless of what is heralded by the voices around us?
While reading through several psalms yesterday morning I was struck by a focus of David. Certainly David faced many challenges in his life. Some things David endured because of choices he made and other situations came about simply because of others not seeking to do God’s Will. Still, David’s focus seemed to ultimately be UPLIFTED above the things that could have brought him down.
The following gives us a glimpse of what David chose to do.
“(12) Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. (13) But I AM LIKE A DEAF MAN; I DO NOT HEAR, LIKE A MUTE MAN WHO DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. (14) I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes.” (Psalm 38:12-14 ESV)
David knew what was being said, but he chose not to listen. He chose to act as if he had not heard. He also chose not to respond. Instead, throughout the psalms we hear David’s declaration of his hope and trust being placed fully on God, knowing God would ultimately bring about His Divine Will on David’s behalf. (i.e. Psalm 31:14-15; 37:1-6) It was on the Lord that David would wait, knowing that He would answer him. (Psalm 38:15)
Are we giving our ear to the discouraging voices? Like David, there are voices we need to turn a deaf ear toward. Perhaps we should not even acknowledge they have spoken. To respond might merely encourage them to speak more. It is to the TRUTH AND ENCOURAGEMENT OF GOD to which we need to keep our ears open because it is His purposes that will ultimately stand. (Proverbs 19:21) Though the world may be speaking many things, let us keep our focus on the God Who holds the future in His hands.
Have a great day HEARING GOD’S VOICE ABOVE ALL!

Bringing It All Together!
Life can become very fragmented. With all the activities, responsibilities, and “extra” things we try to crowd in, it can be difficult to bring it all together. There are times our lists have to be reprioritized or when some things have to be left undone. Sometimes we are struck by the reality we do not always make the right choices with regard to those things. In the midst of all the busyness and trying to remember all that needs to be done, someone has bemoaned, “I finally got it all together and then forgot where I put it!”
Reading through the first chapter of Ephesians yesterday morning, among Paul’s opening statements I was struck by the following.
“(7) In him [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (8) which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (9) making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ (10) as a plan for the fullness of time, TO UNITE ALL THINGS IN HIM, THINGS IN HEAVEN AND THINGS ON EARTH.” (Ephesians 1:7-10 ESV)
JESUS is God’s bridge between earth and Heaven. (John 14:6) He is the One Who brings the two realms together. All is to be under Him! That authority and position is rightfully His. (Matthew 28:18) Our view of earth and Heaven -- and all that is associated with these two realms -- is to be considered with our focus CENTERED ON JESUS. And since the preeminence or supremacy belongs to JESUS with regard to the church, this world, and also the heavenly realm, if JESUS does not have the preeminence in our own life then our life is not in harmony with God’s purpose!
Without JESUS there is no way we can get our life together. Read the passage again and note the blessings that are ours IN CHRIST. Without these provisions IN JESUS would we not be left with a life of loose ends? IT IS JESUS who has provided the means by which we can rest in a hope that it will all come together in the glorious way God has purposed for those who truly acknowledge the LORDSHIP OF JESUS. In order to live a balanced life, let us KEEP JESUS CENTRAL to our life focus. Out of the seeming chaos, He can bring order.
Have a great day KNOWING THE GLORIOUS END THE LORD WILL BRING!

Keyholes!
Have you ever looked through a keyhole? Perhaps you have never seen the kind of keyhole that can actually be peered through unless you have been in an older house. From the inside one is able to look out and see if someone is coming. From the outside one can peer in, not able to gain a full view, but at least a partial one of who is inside or what is going on within the room.
Someone has said, “A Christian is the keyhole through which other folk see God.” [Robert E. Gibson, via bulletin clipping]
God, in all His magnificence, power, and vastness cannot be fully seen or understood. (note Romans 11:33-34, and 1 Corinthians 1:25, and Isaiah 55:8-9) There are many things about God that can be known through observing His creation. (Romans 1:19-20) His Word also clues us in on the greatness of His Wisdom. However, as His people, the manner in which we live our lives can also offer a GLIMPSE of what He is like. Through the “keyhole” of our life what kind of information about God is being revealed?
Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul urged…
“(9) Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices (10) and have put on THE NEW SELF, which is being RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV)
The Greek word translated “image” is “eikon” and is a word that involves the two ideas of representation and manifestation. Having put on the new self in Christ our life is to be a moral representation of what God is! Is that renewed image evident as we go about our daily activities? When our life is observed are others gaining a GLIMPSE of the essence of God?
As our life helps provide a GLIMPSE of God, we need to help others then see the necessity of going beyond the “keyhole” look and going through the door (John 10:9) to gain access to the sphere of salvation in Christ and become involved in the activities within that realm. May each day of our life be lived to direct the attention toward God.
Have a great day REALIZING HOW KEY OUR MANNER OF LIVING CAN BE TO OTHERS SEEING GOD!

When Empty Is Full!
Seeing people wearing a cross doesn’t bother me, though at times I wonder why it is being worn. Sometimes I wonder if it truly reminds them of Christ’s gift of Himself or if it is just another piece of jewelry or merely a fad. However, one thing I “personally” prefer not to see is a crucifix; a cross with Jesus on it. Now, I’m not saying it is wrong to have such a cross, but what it makes me think of is Jesus still on that cross. Jesus was there, but He is not there now. He already gave His life on the cross. The last thing I want to do is put Him back there. Is that possible? Can we put Jesus back on the cross? Well, in a way, yes. The Hebrew writer stated the following in mentioning some who had accepted the truth, experienced its blessings, and then fell away from it.
We read…
“(4) For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, (5) and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, (6) if they then fall away, since they are CRUCIFYING ONCE AGAIN THE SON OF GOD to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.” (Hebrews 6:4-6 ESV)
Jesus took our place on the cross and experienced the torture and humiliation of death for our sins. For us to accept His grace and the power of His blood to cleanse us and then turn away from Him and go back into the life of the world is to drive the nails in again and bring disgrace upon the name of the One we had acknowledged as our Lord and Savior.
Remember it is now an EMPTY CROSS. It is also an EMPTY TOMB. But it is A FULL AND COMPLETE HOPE of salvation that is ours through Him.
Have a great day KNOWING THE EMPTY CROSS MEANS FULL SALVATION!

The Paved Path!
Sometimes people enjoy getting off the beaten path. There are those who love leaving the pavement with their off-road vehicles. However, such places can present some challenges for the traveler. When making a journey it is often best to remain on the main highways because there the pavement is generally more favorable for safe travel. Even the walker is at times provided a paved path on which to walk, reducing the possibility of tripping over obstacles or being sent tumbling due to uneven ground.
The statement has been made that “The road to hell has been paved with good intentions.” Intentions or the desire within is where good things may begin, but there needs to be some follow through and faithfulness to what is planned. With what is the path of our life paved, who paved it, and to where does it lead?
Of the way provided by God, David noted…
“(8) Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in THE WAY. (9) He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble HIS WAY. (10) All the PATHS OF THE LORD ARE STEADFAST LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.” (Psalm 25:8-10 ESV)
The STEADFAST LOVE and FAITHFULNESS of God. Now, there is some good paving! What smoother way could be provided for life’s journey than the LOVE and FAITHFULNESS of God? What better path could be chosen to guard against “blowouts” or getting stuck in the mire and mud of the worldly paths? The path provided by God is surely the “high”-way that should always be traveled throughout life’s journey. May we trust God’s STEADFAST LOVE and FAITHFULNESS to provide the foundation on which to travel on toward the eternity He has prepared for those who are His.
Have a great day KEEPING ON THE HIGHWAY THAT’S HEAVEN BOUND!

Seeking God!
God’s desire has always been for mankind to seek and reach toward Him. (note Acts 17:26-27) The complexity and magnificence of the Creation ought to draw our attention toward God. The humble acknowledgement of needs beyond our own provision should draw us toward Him. The truth of His Word should also touch us in ways that cause us to live to please Him. However, how deeply are we touched by all of this?
David stated…
“You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ MY HEART SAYS to you, ‘YOUR FACE, LORD, DO I SEEK.’” (Psalm 27:8 ESV)
Sometimes people make requests of us and we may respond verbally or even in action, but is THE HEART always involved? Are we ever that way with regard to the requests of God? How do we respond to the Divine invitation to seek Him? When our whole being (note Mark 12:30) -- including the AFFECTIONS OF OUR HEART -- is involved in seeking God, all aspects of our life can be drawn more in line with His Will. A shallow response lacks the substance needed to maintain a steadfast relationship with Him.
Because it was David’s HEART RESPONSE to seek the face of God, it was God to Whom he would count on for help. (Note the context of Psalm 27:7-10) Such is the picture of a worshipful life; when the response moves beyond lip service to that of a truly RESPONSIVE HEART. May we continually have a HEART RESPONSE to all that God asks of us.
Have a great day KEEPING THE HEART FACED TOWARD GOD!

It Remains!
We pick up the newspaper and watch the news on television or listen to it on radio and perhaps wonder where is the GOOD NEWS! Certainly there are challenges that continue in the world around us and turning a deaf ear to those realities does not make them go away or move us to do what we can to either help resolve them or bring healing to those who are hurting because of them. For some the news is so frequently bad that for them the GOOD NEWS is in receiving no news! Don’t we long for some GOOD NEWS to bring some cheer as we journey on through life? The truth is there is still GOOD NEWS that was, is, and always will be GOOD NEWS to those who will accept it. This GOOD NEWS has spanned several thousand years and is just as good as when it was first accepted in faith.
The proclaiming of this GOOD NEWS even took place during the time of Abraham. Paul noted this as he wrote to the church at Galatia.
We read…
“(7) Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. (8) And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, PREACHED THE GOSPEL [Greek, “proeuaggelisato”, from “proeuaggelizomai”] BEFOREHAND TO ABRAHAM, saying, ‘IN YOU SHALL ALL THE NATIONS BE BLESSED.’” (Galatians 3:7-8 ESV)
GOOD NEWS FOR ALL NATIONS was linked to the promise made to Abraham.
When it was time for the Messiah’s coming we read…
“(10) And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you GOOD NEWS [Greek, “euaggelizomai”, from “euaggelizo”] of a great joy THAT WILL BE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11 ESV)
GOOD NEWS FOR ALL PEOPLE was linked to the coming of Christ into this world. He was the fulfillment of the promise relating to the seed or offspring of Abraham. (Galatians 3:16)
And since then that GOOD NEWS has continued to be heralded around the world.
“(1) Now I would REMIND YOU, brothers, OF THE GOSPEL [Greek, “euaggelion”] I PREACHED TO YOU, which you received, in which you stand, (2) and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you -- unless you believed in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:1-2 ESV)
Paul then went on to point out how the core of the Gospel centered on the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) Jesus came into this realm, gave Himself as the adequate sacrifice for our sins, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven to prepare a place for us to spend an eternity with Him. GOOD NEWS intended FOR ALL PEOPLE!
Regardless of what else is going on in this world, the GOOD NEWS of Jesus as the means of our salvation from sin and the source of our eternal hope remains not only GOOD NEWS, but actually the BEST NEWS that can be received! The reason this continues to remain true is because “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8 ESV) Even in a world of chaos and the unpredictable we have this constant to hang onto. May we continue to maintain a steadfast hope in Him as we pass this GOOD NEWS on to those around us.
Have a great day ENCOURAGED BY THE NEWS INTENDED FOR EVERY EAR!

Taking The Day Off!
Some time to break away from work or school is always nice. Time to be able to do what we choose to do rather than what we are told to do or know we have to do. That’s what days off, vacations, holidays, and weekends are for. Under the old law God had set aside the Sabbath Day as a day of rest. It’s establishment was a safeguard for Israel from becoming “workaholics” and their servants and beasts from being overused. (Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:13-14) To cease from work and take some time for rest and reflection is important.
When we have a day off, we get to do some things we might not do on other days of the week. However, are there some things we do on the other days that we have chosen to NOT TAKE A DAY OFF FROM even on the days that are completely ours to choose what to do? Consider for a moment what you usually do when you have a day off; when you have the freedom to do whatever you want?
When I have a day off I will usually take a long walk. Sometimes I will do some work around the yard. There are times I will take a drive or just sit by the water or go somewhere with my camera to take pictures. I also enjoy spending time playing one of my violins, guitars, or hammer dulcimer. To me each of these can be mind, body, and spirit rejuvenating. However, even on a day off, my day will begin similar to all the rest. I still have my Bible time (time alone with God) scheduled into each morning. Even when we are camping, I will climb out of the tent in the morning, get the coffee started on the camp stove, and then do my reading while the coffee begins to perk.
We need to guard against a day off becoming a DAY OFF FROM GOD! After all, are we not glad God does not take A DAY OFF FROM US?
Remember when Elijah and the prophets of Baal had that great contest on Mount Carmel. (1 Kings 18) When Baal did not respond to the cries to answer, we read…
“And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, ‘Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is ON A JOURNEY, OR PERHAPS HE IS ASLEEP AND MUST BE AWAKENED.’” (1 Kings 18:27 ESV)
Praise God that is not characteristic of Him. Consider the contrast noted in one of the Psalms.
“(1) I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? (2) My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. (3) He will not let your foot be moved; HE WHO KEEPS YOU WILL NOT SLUMBER. (4) Behold, he who keeps Israel WILL NEITHER SLUMBER NOR SLEEP.” (Psalm 121:1-4 ESV)
Beginning each day with prayer and Bible reading helps remind us of God’s continuing awareness of our life and that we are always living IN HIS PRESENCE. Whether it be a day we are doing what others have decided for us or what we ourselves have chosen, let us always be sure there is time with God -- time for His Word. There is no day that should be approached apart from Him.
Have a great day LIVING ON WITH GOD!

Pleasant Parameters!
Lines are drawn in life for all sorts of reasons. BOUNDARIES -- whether they be physical, social, or spiritual -- aid in eliminating some of the chaos as order is brought to life through the recognition of set limits. For some, pleasant parameters are those that allow them to do whatever they want to do. However, not only should we consider where the lines are drawn, but note who it is that has drawn them.
David wrote…
“(5) THE LORD IS MY CHOSEN PORTION and my cup; you hold my lot. (6) THE LINES HAVE FALLEN FOR ME IN PLEASANT PLACES; indeed, I have A BEAUTIFUL INHERITANCE.” (Psalm 16:5-6 ESV)
When the priesthood was set up under the old law, God told Aaron that he would have no inheritance in the land because God would be his portion and inheritance. (Numbers 18:20) Aaron and his descendents would continue in a very special relationship with God as priests and would be sustained by the holy contributions brought to God by the nation of Israel. (Numbers 18:19) Perhaps David had this idea of reliance on his relationship with God in mind when he stated the Lord was his “chosen portion.” What else did David need if he had God?
Then David noted the BOUNDARIES God had established for him and how those lines had fallen in pleasant places. David lived within the holy city Jerusalem. He was blessed to live in the place where God had chosen to place His Name. (i.e. 1 Kings 11:36) However, I think for David it was even more than that! Because of his intimate relationship with God, David had a joyful view of his lot in life.
Where God draws the lines and chooses for us to dwell -- what better inheritance could be possessed? The life God desires for us to possess is to be found within the boundaries He has set. Is our life being lived under the Holy Name of God? It is there we can find the beautiful life that holds the promise of an eternal inheritance. Let us always focus on the truth that godliness “holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8b ESV) No greater or more blessed heritage can be gained than that which is ours in the Lord. May we truly appreciate the life and promise associated with living within the pleasant parameters God has established.
Have a great day LIVING THE LIFE LINED OUT BY THE LORD!

A Problem?
For some people a job is just a job while others may view their employment from the standpoint of the significant contribution they can make with regard to the lives of others. To enjoy what we are doing can take some of the “work” out of it. However, taking what we do seriously can also create some stress when we share a genuine CONCERN for the welfare of others.
In my ministry and the various ways in which I have been enabled to connect with our community, I have the privilege (along with which comes some responsibility) of interacting with people on various levels. My wife’s employment also connects her with the lives of others as she works in an assisted living facility. In her work she enjoys the interaction she has with the residents there, but has also come to realize a certain amount of stress that goes along with her work as she finds herself thinking about the care of these people even when she is not at work. One of her co-workers recently stated, “Your problem is you care too much.”
CARE TOO MUCH? Is that possible? Is that a problem? Perhaps we would agree that such an attitude has its side affects. Paul appears to have experienced it as he continued in his labors for the Lord.
After listing many of the trials that he endured, Paul stated…
“(28) And, apart from other things, there is the DAILY PRESSURE ON ME OF MY ANXIETY FOR ALL THE CHURCHES. (29) Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?” (2 Corinthians 11:28-29 ESV)
The Greek word translated “anxiety” here is the word “merimna”, meaning care or anxiety. W.E. Vine points to this word as appearing to be connected to “merizo” which literally refers to being drawn in different directions and thus being distracted. [Vine’s Exp. Dict. Of N.T. Words] What Paul seems to have pointed to was a CARE FOR OTHERS that just naturally drew his mind to them and their needs.
Peter exhorted and encouraged…
“(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (7) casting all your anxieties on him, BECAUSE HE CARES FOR YOU.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV)
Peter, in referring to GOD’S CARE, used the same word (“merimna”) Paul used of himself. Perhaps if we were to say that God had a problem it would be that HE CARES TOO MUCH! Consider all He has provided for our emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual welfare! God continues to be patient toward a world that has largely ignored Him. (2 Peter 3:9) He continues to hold out hope! He loved enough to send the very best -- His only Begotten Son -- to deal adequately with our sins and provide what is necessary to secure our eternal salvation.
Does HE CARE TOO MUCH? Do we daily acknowledge HOW MUCH HE CARES? Even in the midst of this vast creation we each have drawn the loving attention of God! May we help others come to know how much HE DOES CARE as we ourselves respond appropriately to such a love as He has revealed.
Have a great day ETERNALLY THANKFUL THAT GOD TRULY CARES!

Take A Chill Pill?
“Why don’t you go take a chill pill!” Such is the statement sometimes made to the anxious or hyper individual. In a world of just about instant everything, pills or injections to bring quicker results are advertised with hype and snatched up with eager hope and expectation. Some desiring to lose weight without change of diet or exercise look for a pill advertised to do the job. Pills promoted as being able to energize the body or sharpen the mind are touted as wonder drugs. It wasn’t that many years ago some claimed we would someday have a pill that could replace a full several course meal. I’ll admit I enjoy the taste of food too much to even entertain the thought of utilizing such a pill.
However, the “give it to me now” or “make it happen for me the EASY WAY” mentality has also crept into religion. Drive-in church is available for those who want to worship without getting out of their car. It has even been suggested recently that many may soon replace their church attendance with “on-line church” from the comfort of their own home and at a time more convenient for each individual.
Package it up! Make it easier and quicker to swallow! Give me a pill! Is that what we are seeking? Now, before you tell me to go take a “chill pill”, consider the things which have contributed to the growth of your faith and spiritual walk. Life certainly would be easier if God had provided an inoculation against sin, a pill of righteousness, and an injection of His wisdom. However, God has not chosen to work things in that way.
Note what Paul pointed to as worthy of our rejoicing.
“(1) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. (2) Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (3) More than that, we REJOICE IN OUR SUFFERINGS, KNOWING THAT SUFFERING PRODUCES ENDURANCE, (4) and ENDURANCE PRODUCES CHARACTER, and CHARACTER PRODUCES HOPE, (5) and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:1-5 ESV)
We may not particularly like some of the ways our growth comes, but we can certainly develop an appreciation for them. God has given us His Spirit to aid us in the process. And He wants us to accept His wisdom in how some things are best developed in our life.
No pill can ever replace, nor bring better results, than what God provides. Let us press on in trusting obedient faith, as God nurtures and renews our life.
Have a great day APPRECIATING GROWING GOD’S WAY!

Balloons And Bubbles!
What child does not like balloons? They come in so many colors, sizes and shapes. Children are drawn to balloons, especially those filled with helium. Walking around with a colorful balloon floating above them -- kept from flying away by the string attached to their wrist -- perhaps the child's mind thinks of what it would be like to do a little floating themselves. However, what great disappointment comes when either the balloon pops or it comes lose leaving the child to tearfully watch as it floats out of sight. Even balloons filled only with air are fun for children to bat around a room or yard until they come against some sharp object and the joy is popped along with them.
What child does not like bubbles? Perhaps there is something better about bubbles than balloons. Like balloons, bubbles also float. It is so neat to watch a child's eyes light up at the sight of a large single bubble floating up into the air. There is also great joy in watching multiple bubbles being blown. How delighted children can be running after the bubbles and popping them. Bubbles in the sunlight also have their own beauty as the colors of the rainbow appear. Such color's are God's colors created by the light of His creation. But what is it about bubbles that I would say makes them better than balloons? When the bubbles pop all that's needed is to stick the wand back in the bottle and blow some more!
To which of these might we prefer to compare life? Have we ever had expectations or HOPES pop or drift out of sight? When such happens do we tend to lose our joy along with them? Having felt the upward pull of the HOPE have we found ourselves with a sense of being left empty handed? Perhaps if we think of life in terms of bubbles we can be reminded that when one expectation bursts, we can dip the wand in to BLOW ANOTHER BUBBLE. When situations of life don't appear to be going as planned, we should take another breath and BLOW ANOTHER BUBBLE. As bubbles are blown and begin to ride the breeze, we may not know where they will come to rest or how long they may float about, and such is the way of life experiences here. But it is not over yet. As there are STILL BUBBLES TO BE BLOWN, we can look to God for another day to be lived and other experiences to be encountered with the HOPE of ultimately flying away home to the glory of His eternal realm.
Some things may not have been meant to be. We also need to be reminded from time to time that the things of this realm are only temporary. However, let us not allow that to keep us from finding joy in the next bubble that causes our gaze to again be lifted upward. Life comes to us from God one day, one experience, one situation, one "bubble" at a time. Each new day brings with it NEW HOPE and NEW OPPORTUNITIES.
In spite of the challenges faced by the prophet Jeremiah, he could still say.
"(22) THE STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD NEVER CEASES; HIS MERCIES NEVER
COME TO AN END; (23) THEY ARE NEW EVERY MORNING; great is your faithfulness. (24) 'The Lord is my portion,' says my soul, 'therefore I will hope in him.'" (Lamentations 3:22-24 ESV)
Each morning God brings He refills "the bottle" for us to BLOW MORE BUBBLES. Though we may not know how far or for how long each bubble may float, let us keep dipping into God's "bottle" and keep blowing. May we appreciate each bubble for the time it lasts as we allow each one to lift our gaze heavenward to the One in Whom we can place a steadfast HOPE.
Have a great day CONTINUING TO DRAW ENCOURAGEMENT FROM WHAT GOD PROVIDES!

To Know Him!
People will have varying views of others simply due to either how much or how little they know about them. The better we know someone the more willing we are to TRUST them with regard to the most precious things of our life. Is that not the same with regard to our view of God?
Reading through Psalms yesterday morning, I was struck by the following words of David.
“(9) The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. (10) And THOSE WHO KNOW YOUR NAME PUT THEIR TRUST IN YOU, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:9-10 ESV)
The more we come to know God the more willing we will be to surrender in TRUSTING FAITH to His care and guidance. David’s trust in God is beautifully reflected in the twenty-third psalm as a sheep who intimately knew the Great Shepherd. That relationship brought comfort, rest, and relief from fear.
To come to know God’s Names is to come to know more of Him and why He is completely worthy of our TRUST. “Elohim”, our magnificent Creator. “Yahweh” (or “Jehovah”, “LORD”) the Covenant God who keeps His promises. “Adonai”, the glorious Ruler of all. “Eloah”, the One of strength. “El-Shaddai”, God Almighty. “El-Olam”, the everlasting One. “Elyon”, the exalted or most high One. “El Roi”, the God who sees me. And the list from the Hebrew goes on, though not to forget the great “I Am” who is the ever existing One. To know God’s infinite wisdom, power, love, grace, mercy, goodness, unfailing faithfulness, etc. should draw us ever closer to Him with a willingness to rest our life in His sovereign care.
To know God -- to know His Name (and Names) -- is to develop a view of His attributes and power in which our COMPLETE TRUST for our very life can be placed. We can FULLY TRUST in Him because He can only remain faithful. (1 Timothy 2:13) As we sincerely seek Him let us know we will not be forsaken.
Have a great day COMFORTED IN KNOWING THE ONE ON WHOM WE CAN DEPEND!

Messages!
The advancements in technology that have taken place over the years are marvelous. Information is transmitted by means of satellite to radio and television in real time. News and information is RECEIVED instantaneously as it is happening around the world. With the means of the internet and e-mail, the sending and RECEIVING of messages is right at our fingertips. Such technology can be (and should be) used to the glory of God. Still, in spite of all this wonderful technology there remains an age old problem. Someone has stated it this way: “You can send a message around the world in one fifth of a second, yet it may take years for it to get from the outside of a man’s head to the inside.” [quote source: bulletin clipping]
Though it may not be hard for messages to be sent, having them PROPERLY RECEIVED is another issue. God has been transmitting the truth of His Will by various means throughout the ages and it has too often been met by the hard-headedness and hard-heartedness of mankind.
Note two things for which the Bereans were complimented.
“(10) The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. (11) Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they RECEIVED THE WORD WITH ALL EAGERNESS, EXAMINING THE SCRIPTURES DAILY to see if these things were so.” (Acts 17:11)
Their RECEIVING of the message Paul proclaimed was marked by an eagerness. They were not close-minded. However, their open-mindedness did not mean they were going to accept just any message. They also checked it out to make sure it agreed with Scripture. Unlike some who don’t seem willing to even give the truth a chance, the Bereans were willing to both listen and to investigate the truth. Truth is not fearful of investigation and it does not appear that Paul felt slighted in the least to have his message checked out. Such honest investigation is a safeguard for both the messenger and the RECEIVER.
One of the psalmists prayed…
“OPEN MY EYES, THAT I MAY BEHOLD WONDROUS THINGS OUT OF YOUR LAW.” (Psalm 119:18 ESV)
Let us also continue to have such openness to the RECEIVING of the Word of God. May we not make it take years of trying before it getting in.
Have a great day EAGERLY LETTING THE WORD COME IN!

Delusion!
Hitler’s propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels said: “Christ cannot possibly have been a Jew. I don’t have to prove that scientifically. It is a fact.” [source: “Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations”, by Paul Lee Tan] Could there be any clearer example of self-delusion than that? What can be done when someone simply does not want to believe something? When one is just not at all open to the TRUTH, what can be done? What has God chosen to do?
Paul noted in his second letter to the church at Thessalonica…
“(9) The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, (10) and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they REFUSED TO LOVE THE TRUTH and so be saved.(11) Therefore GOD SENDS THEM A STRONG DELUSION, SO THAT THEY MAY BELIEVE WHAT IS FALSE, (12) in order that all may be condemned who DID NOT BELIEVE THE TRUTH but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 ESV)
When people are bent on continuing down a particular road, God reaches a point of giving them over or up to it. (i.e. Romans 1:24, 26, 28) When someone refuses to accept the TRUTH even the most dramatic of evidences will not do it. Jesus even stated in his teaching that there were some who would not be convinced even if someone was brought back from the dead! (Luke 16:31) During our Lord’s ministry here on earth we even see such a response when He raised Lazarus from the dead. This grand miracle was met with the response of the Jewish leaders who saw all the more that they could not just let Jesus keep going on like that (John 11:46-47) and even plotted to kill Lazarus who was in this case the evidence of Jesus’ power. (John 12:10-11) Some people just don’t like the TRUTH when it doesn’t fit in to their life agenda!
What can we do to safeguard against being deceived in such a way? Those Paul referred to in his letter to the church at Thessalonica were described as refusing to “LOVE THE TRUTH and so be saved.” (vs.10) Therefore, instead of loving the pleasure of unrighteousness, let us be all the more earnest about maintaining a genuine LOVE FOR THE TRUTH! It is GODLY LOVE that “rejoices with the TRUTH.” (1 Corinthians 13:6) May that acceptance and rejoicing be continually ours as we strive to live in accordance with the TRUTH of God.
Have a great day SEEING TRUTH AND LOVING IT!

Everyday Character!
Interviews! Perhaps you have recently gone through some. Job applicants endure them. Prospective students face them. Opportunity is provided to “sell” one’s self. Perhaps the opportunity to prepare for making a good impression is appreciated. At times there may be the tendency to “undersell” one’s abilities in an effort to avoid appearing arrogant in pointing out one’s own strengths. However, how often has a flowering interview been witnessed with the reality on the job (or in the school) appearing as if there were two completely different individuals?
The story has been related that when 20th Century Fox advertised in the papers of New York in an attempt to fill a vacancy in their sales department, one applicant replied as follows: “I am at present selling furniture at the address below. You may judge my ability as a salesman if you will stop in to see me at anytime, pretending that you are interested in buying furniture. When you come in, you can identify me by my red hair. And I will have no way of identifying you. Such salesmanship as I exhibit during your visit, therefore, will be no more than my usual workday approach and not a special effort to impress a prospective employer.” Among the 1500 applicants it was this “redhead” who was selected for the job.
Such character is what Paul urged of some to whom he wrote.
“(22) Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, NOT BY WAY OF EYE-SERVICE, as people-pleasers, BUT WITH SINCERITY OF HEART, fearing the Lord. (23) Whatever you do, WORK HEARTILY, AS FOR THE LORD and not for men, (24) knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. YOU ARE SERVING THE LORD CHRIST.” (Colossians 3:22-24 ESV)
The New Living Translation reads, “(22)…Try to please them ALL THE TIME, NOT JUST WHEN THEY ARE WATCHING YOU.….”
Though our employment situations are not that of the context of Paul’s letter, there is still a principle applicable to our life today. Part of the attitude here would be that if we just ARE WHAT WE OUGHT TO BE we won’t even have to think about pretending, putting on a show, or wondering if we are being watched. Acknowledging we are ALWAYS SERVING in the sight of the Lord there will be consistency in the manner in which we live our daily life. Such are the individuals the world needs and the kind God desires us TO BE! May it daily be so!
Have a great day MARKED BY A CONSISTENT SERVANT’S HEART!

Room!
In order to make room for something it is sometimes necessary to move something else out. Just as this is true with regard to space in our homes, it is also true with the human HEART. We have the capacity to love many many people. However, it is possible to hold affection for either self or things in such a way that there is no room to love others as we should.
Paul exhorted those at Corinth to…
“(2) MAKE ROOM IN YOUR HEARTS FOR US. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have taken advantage of no one. (3) I do not say this to condemn you, for I said before that YOU ARE IN OUR HEARTS, to die together and to live together.” (2 Corinthians 7:2-3 ESV)
Had their affection for Paul been replaced by others or something else? Though it had been necessary for Paul to be pretty direct with regard to some of the changes in focus these Christians needed to make, did they no longer have room for Paul in their HEARTS? Had they begun to question Paul’s love? The place they held in Paul’s HEART was with a readiness to either live or die with them. Did they need to be reminded of the genuineness of Paul’s love for them? It appears Paul was seeking for their relationship with him to be drawn back together. He desired for them to feel for him as he felt for them. Paul had given of himself while in their midst and urged them to retain a place for him (and the others who labored with Paul) in their HEARTS.
Perhaps we have allowed situations or even needed instruction to change our openness toward other Christian brothers and sisters. Is there a need for the HEART to be reopened toward them, allowing them to once again have a place in our life? Let us not allow pettiness to cause separation within God’s family. There is enough of that wishy-washiness and fickleness of feelings in this world for it to create challenges within the church and distract from the Lord’s work in which we are to be involved. It is a detractor from unity and a waster of energy. Instead, let us choose to love as the Lord has loved and accepted us, doing so for the sake of the Lord’s body and the glory of God. (Romans 15:7)
Let us strive to do as Paul urged those at Colossae.
“(12) Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, (13) BEARING WITH ONE ANOTHER and, if one has a complaint against another, FORGIVING EACH OTHER; AS THE LORD HAS FORGIVEN YOU, so you also must forgive.” (Colossians 3:12-13 ESV)

Free, But Still Locked Up?
The story has been told of how the GREAT HOUDINI, being a master magician, as well as a great locksmith, once boasted there wasn’t a jail cell in the world he couldn’t escape from, provided he could go into the cell dressed in his street clothes and work in complete privacy. A small town in England had built a new jail -- which they believed was escape-proof -- so Houdini was invited to come and try to break out. Houdini accepted the challenge. They put him in the cell, closed the door, and left him there alone. Houdini took off his belt from which he took a tough, flexible steel rod, which he then used to begin working on the lock. He worked longer than it had ever taken him before and he still couldn’t get the lock open! As time passed, he was becoming exhausted. He was stumped! Finally, after two solid hours of work, Houdini collapsed from exhaustion. He fell against the door to the cell, and when he did -- the door swung open! The door had been unlocked all the time!
HERE'S THE POINT: We cannot overcome sin in our life by our own effort and hard work. If that were possible then Jesus didn’t need to die that cruel death on the cross. When we finally admit we are helpless and turn to God, THEN He will set us free!
Jesus said: “SO IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE, YOU WILL BE FREE INDEED.” (John 8:36 ESV)
And Paul encouraged…
“(1) There is therefore now NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life HAS SET YOU FREE IN CHRIST JESUS from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1-2 ESV)
Let God have your life. We need HIS HELP TO BE SET FREE. There is no reason to bear the burden of sin or to be imprisoned by it since God has provided the way to freedom! Why remain behind the door when it has already been unlocked? It is Jesus Who has provided life’s needed GREAT ESCAPE!
Have a great day KNOWING THE FREEDOM IN CHRIST!

Greatest Potential!
Teens growing up are often encouraged to work toward their “greatest potential.” “If you just believe and work hard enough”, the encouragement goes, “you can achieve your greatest potential and live a rewarding and successful life.” Studying hard and beginning the development of good life skills, a view toward successful living begins to form in the mind and goals are set. When it is felt that this “greatest potential” has been achieved, perhaps what accompanies it is a sense of pride in the position that has then been gained. However, success as defined by the world may not be a reflection of our “greatest potential” at all. The “greatest potential” is something we can all achieve, but only if we are willing. What is the “greatest potential” for our life?
Jesus appears to have defined it as follows:
“THE GREATEST AMONG YOU SHALL BE YOUR SERVANT.” (Matthew 23:11 ESV)
And…
“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, ‘If anyone would be first, HE MUST BE last of all and SERVANT OF ALL.’” (Mark 9:35 ESV)
Jesus also noted the contrast between the world’s view and the perspective of His calling in the following manner:
“(42) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, ‘You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. (43) But it shall not be so among you. But whoever WOULD BE GREAT among you must BE your SERVANT, (44) and WHOEVER WOULD BE FIRST AMONG YOU MUST BE SLAVE OF ALL.” (Mark 10:42-44 ESV)
I submit to you that if we are not willing to take on the role of a SERVANT, we are not yet realizing our “greatest potential.” Jesus, the greatest One to ever walk the face of this earth, set the supreme example (Mark 10:45; Philippians 2:7) and we are the recipients of the blessing of His willing SERVITUDE. Having been called to become like Him, we are to be willing to give our lives in selfless service. May that “greatest potential” continually be reached toward.
Have a great day NOT STOPPING SHORT OF THE POTENTIAL GOD CREATED US TO POSSESS!

In The Boat Together!
Last week I had the enjoyable experience of going canoeing. Being utilized by the group of almost fifty paddlers were some five person, three person and two person canoes, as well as several one person kayaks. Those in kayaks had to do all the work themselves to travel the approximately three hour round trip to and from the island that was our destination for lunch. Those (such as myself) who shared a canoe with others had help in moving along. The load was shared, even providing the opportunity to rest the arms for a while as others took over. The journey we shared was made through changing weather (sunshine, hard rain, and wind at times) and through some places of strong current. At one point I watched from my position in the back of the canoe as water began to pour in one side, but together the situation was corrected as the center person in our canoe immediately got down low in the bottom of the boat to concentrate more of the weight there while the other two of us rowed and our vessel was rebalanced. Without a word, each of us did OUR PART and our journey continued. Had we worked against each other we would have most likely gone all the way over. The two teens in the canoe with me were great crew to share the journey.
A couple nights ago, while sitting in a restaurant along the waterfront of Port Townsend, I watched two men in a rowboat. As they moved along I was struck by the thought that it definitely appeared to be a two person rowboat. It was an older wooden boat that appeared to necessitate the work of two individuals as it moved along. What I observed was one man rowing while the other was continuing to bail water out of the old boat.
On this life’s journey, going it alone leaves us with challenges that can be difficult and at times even very fearful. However, as we acknowledge how we are in it all together, we can help one another remain afloat and moving toward our ultimate destination. At varying times the journey demands for us each to step forward and fulfill needed functions. Sometimes we help bring balance to the lives of others. There are times when it is our turn to row a little harder. We may even need to help do some bailing in the lives of others. (However, may that be the action of being there for them rather than bailing out on them.) We will also find ourselves as being the recipients of such aid.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus he exhorted…
“(15) Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (16) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, WHEN EACH PART IS WORKING PROPERLY, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16 ESV)
Let us be mindful of the journey we are on together and how our combined individual efforts help to make the traveling easier. We are not in it alone. As each of us are doing OUR PART the journey through life will go better. May we be encouraged as we move along together regardless of the conditions around us.
Have a great day PRESSING ON TOGETHER!

Proper Care!
We buy products that come with varying guarantees. Some even come with “lifetime” warranties. However, does that mean our own lifetime or merely the lifetime of the product itself?
It has been noted that the human body, with proper care, will last a lifetime. Though those years may vary from person to person, was the body intended to last any more than a lifetime? It came from dust (Genesis 2:7) and it is to dust the body will return. (Ecclesiastes 3:20; 12:7) We may pump iron, jog or run, watch our diet, and try to get proper rest and enhance the quality of our physical well-being in this realm, but all that is for nothing if the same diligence is not given to the fitness of the spiritual life. It is the guarding and proper care of THE SOUL’S NEEDS that provides glorious life for an eternity!
Paul noted in his first letter to Timothy…
“for while bodily training is of some value, GODLINESS IS OF VALUE IN EVERY WAY, as it HOLDS PROMISE FOR THE PRESENT LIFE AND ALSO FOR THE LIFE TO COME.” (1 Timothy 4:8 ESV)
Continuing to live in a right relationship with God, our spirit will ultimately return to the One Who gave it. (Ecclesiastes 12:7) Through godliness OUR SOUL is warranted for both the present life and the eternal life to come. Though some may have power to kill the body, it is the One Who has the power over our SOUL’S eternal destiny that we need most to be concerned. (Matthew 10:28; Luke 12:4-5)
My prayer for you is that which John expressed to Gaius when he wrote…
“Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, AS IT GOES WELL WITH YOUR SOUL.” (3 John 2 ESV)
Have a great day BECOMING FIT TO LAST AN ETERNITY!

The Real Blessing!
[07/04/2007 “teEn-MAIL”]
THE REAL BLESSING!
When a child is born into this world, they are totally DEPENDENT upon their parents to be fed, bathed, dressed, changed, and to get from place to place. As the child begins to grow the parents begin training the child in ways that help them develop some INDEPENDENCE. Those first steps -- for the child -- may be a bit scary, as well as the first time their parents let go of the bicycle allowing their child to balance themselves, but those moments of INDEPENDENCE are applauded by the parents. Then come the teen years when parents begin to get a little scared as their children want to exercise their INDEPENDENCE in clothing and hair styles, when to do certain things and choose where they want to go. Then comes the age of the driver’s license and more INDEPENDENCE that may be met with some apprehension by the parents, but with great excitement by their teen.
Is that all there is to our existence; a going from DEPENDENCE to INDEPENDENCE. INDEPENDENCE is heralded by some as the greatest thing one can achieve. Even today in the United States of America, July 4 is celebrated as “Independence Day” commemorating the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 and INDEPENDENCE from English rule. However, are we truly INDEPENDENT as a country? No! The INDEPENDENCE of this country was achieved by the INTERDEPENDENT work of many. Today there remains an INTERDEPENDENCE on other countries for trade and we even have allies for defense. There is also INTERDEPENDENCE we have within our families and within the family of God.
Writing to the church at Rome, Paul stated…
“(3) For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. (4) For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, (5) so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and INDIVIDUALLY members ONE OF ANOTHER.” (Romans 12:3-5 ESV)
Verse five in the New Living Translation reads… “so it is with Christ’s body. We are all parts of his one body, and each of us has different work to do. And since we are all one body in Christ, we BELONG TO EACH OTHER, and EACH OF US NEEDS ALL THE OTHERS.”
Coming into this world we were totally DEPENDENT on others until we began to develop some INDEPENDENCE which gives us something to offer others in the give and take of our INTERDEPENDENT relationships. INTERDEPENDENCE combines our efforts with the efforts of others, our energy with the energy of others, our abilities with the abilities of others, our gifts with the gifts of others, and our talents with the talents of others. Besides the power and wisdom of God being a dynamic resource for our lives we need to recognize the vast resource our INTERDEPENDENT relationships also provide. Though there are things we ought to learn to do for ourselves so we can become contributors within our relationships, we must never lose sight of the importance of each other and the mutual blessing of INTERDEPENDENT relationships. Within the family of God we are individual members, but we also need to recognize how we belong to each other being a part of the same body. That INTERDEPENDENCE with one another benefits the whole body and enhances the work we are to be involved in under the Headship of Christ. May we experience the blessing of such togetherness.
Have a great day CELEBRATING LIFE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST!

Going His Way!
A reality of life in this realm is that things do not always go our way. In fact, that life experience has the potential to make us rather pessimistic toward life. Someone has said, “An optimist is someone who tells you to cheer up when things are going his way.” [source: calendar quote] When I read that quote I thought: Who is more OPTIMISTIC than God? If He were a pessimist would He not have given up on humanity a long time ago? Sure, He knows what is within the heart of every individual and all that the future holds. Still, though our vision is limited in this regard there is that which we can know that can make a difference in our outward look on life.
Granted, it is easy to be OPTIMISTIC when things are going our way. However, when things are not working out as we had hoped, let us not forget the bigger picture associated with God.
Paul encouraged…
“(31) What then shall we say to these things? IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US? (32) He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32 ESV)
“God is for us!” It is His presence and power and wisdom that makes all the difference in our life. Every command God has given and every blessing He has provided has been with our best in mind. Even the fact God allows us to go through some challenges in life provides the growth of a trusting faith we could not develop otherwise.
God’s love has been extended and revealed in many ways with an OPTIMISM toward our responding appropriately to it. Be of good cheer. Ultimately things will go His way. May it be His way that we strive to remain within as we respond to the great abiding love He has revealed.
Have a great day JOYFUL IN LIGHT OF GOD’S PREVAILING WILL!

Worth Watching!
I had a great week working with the teens at Delano Bay Christian Camp’s STS (senior teen session) again this past week. This year marked the twelfth year I have been invited to be staff for this age group. Though I am there as a counselor and teacher, there is much I get back from these teens who come together from various youth groups and I appreciate them allowing me to share in their life and to experience their acceptance in spite of the span of years between us. Together we make up the body of Christ and have a great work in which to share. The benefits of the relationship go both ways.
Having come home Saturday afternoon worn out but filled up by the week’s activities and spiritual focuses, one of the young teens in our congregation almost brought tears to my eyes as we were beginning our Sunday morning class discussion. Looking across the table at me she stated she wanted to become like me. To know there is something in our life others would like to imitate can be very encouraging. However, it can also be A VERY SOBERING THOUGHT (and I think should be) to become aware of others watching our life and considering following our EXAMPLE. The reality is we are ALL EXAMPLES whether that be for bad or good. The thing that will aid most in living to be a worthy EXAMPLE -- even though it is our own individual life the view may be toward -- is that we live to direct the focus HIGHER THAN MERELY OURSELVES.
Writing to the church at Corinth Paul urged…
“Be imitators of me, AS I AM OF CHRIST.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 ESV)
“And you should follow my example, just as I follow Christ’s.” (New Living Translation)
The only way we can continue to live lives worth watching is to keep our eyes on the EXAMPLE OF CHRIST and continuing to walk after HIS EXAMPLE. Though we ought to live EXEMPLARY lives, the truth is there is still the need for a BETTER EXAMPLE than you or me. That is why we must be honest about our own struggles while helping others see JESUS as the ULTIMATE EXAMPLE to be followed. We should develop some real seriousness with regard to this because of the goal that motivated Paul in his ministry.
Backing up to the last three verses of the previous chapter we read…
“(31) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD. (32) Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, (33) just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, NOT SEEKING MY OWN ADVANTAGE, BUT THAT OF MANY, THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED.” (1 Corinthians 10:31-33 ESV)
Yes, souls are at stake. The manner in which we choose to live may not only impact our own soul’s destiny, but the destiny of those who choose to look to our life as an EXAMPLE to follow. Eyes are watching. The potential is there for others to be influenced. Is Christ being seen? Let us live so that the essence of our Lord remains the standard for comparison.
Have a great day LIVING TO LIFT EYES TO JESUS!

Answering The Call! (part 7)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 7)
KEEP IN TOUCH!
When the call to a mission has been answered and the work is being done out in the field, there remains the need to be connected for further orders. It could be that everything being done is only preliminary to the final acts of the mission. All those on the mission remain where they ought to be and involved in what they were sent to do. And when the FINAL CALL for the mission to be brought to full completion comes, they are ready to respond.
Even after we have responded to the call of God it is important for us to remain in touch with the One Who has called us. By so doing, we will be prepared for that FINAL CALL!
Jesus stated:
“And he will send out his angels with A LOUD TRUMPET CALL, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” (Matthew 24:31 ESV)
Paul encouraged:
“(15) For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. (16) For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with A CRY OF COMMAND, with THE VOICE OF AN ARCHANGEL, and with THE SOUND OF THE TRUMPET OF GOD. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. (18) Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 ESV)
Though we have answered God’s call now, we must remain in touch and ready for the FINAL CALLING we shall one day receive. We have been called to go out into the fields to harvest souls for Christ, but the day will come when we will be called out of the fields and called home! Being where we ought to be and doing what ought to be done now keeps us prepared, serves to prepare others and also keeps us in position for that FINAL CALL!
Have a great day CONNECTED FOR THE CALL!
