Answering The Call! (part 6)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 6)
MAKE IT SURE!
The phone rings and this is the way you answer: “Is it really you? Is that really what you want me to do? Okay -- consider it as good as done!”
Is it evident to others that we have been called and have accepted the call of God? Peter admonished:
“(10) Therefore, brothers, be all the more DILIGENT TO MAKE YOUR CALLING and election SURE, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. (11) For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:10-11 ESV)
But how is that done? It’s through a focus on the “qualities” Peter had just listed. We need to progress in our faith. The things which Peter stated to “make every effort” to add to (or supplement) our faith are: virtue (or goodness), knowledge, self-control, steadfastness (or perseverance), godliness, brotherly affection, and love. (2 Peter 1:5-7) These are what will make us effective and fruitful in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus. (2 Peter 1:8)
Our faith needs to grow, for it is through the steadfastness of faith we are able to press on to the goal of being welcomed into the eternal kingdom. Making our calling sure ensures against falling short of the heavenly goal.
Have a great day SECURE in your calling of God!

Answering The Call! (part 5)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 5)
CALLED TO BE A PART OF THE “PHONE TREE”!
In our congregation our women have set up a “PHONE TREE”. The way it works is the person at the top of the list is called, she calls the first person on several sections of the list who, in turn, call those on their part of the list. It is a means of quickly getting information out that is of concern to members of the congregation. The “PHONE TREE” is utilized when someone is in need of special or immediate prayers. We use the “PHONE TREE” when someone is sick, when someone has to go into the hospital, or in the case of a death in the family.
But we all have been called to be a part of a “PHONE TREE”. There has been a death in the family and we need to let others know. Jesus Christ gave His life for the sins of the world and we are called to share that information with others in order for them to respond and receive the benefits.
As Paul continued his missionary journeys we read:
“(6) And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. (7) And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. (8) So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. (9) And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ (10) And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that GOD HAD CALLED US TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THEM.” (Acts 16:6-10 ESV)
And to the church at Thessalonica, Paul wrote:
“(6) And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, (7) so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. (8) For not only has THE WORD OF THE LORD SOUNDED FORTH FROM YOU in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. (9) For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, (10) and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” (1 Thessalonians 1:6-10 ESV)
Though we have been called by God out of the world and into His kingdom there are others who may have played a part in the calling. And the Lord desires to do some calling through us. We are part of a “PHONE TREE”. He wants us to continue to relay the message of His calling.
Have a great day being part of God’s “PHONE TREE”!

ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 4d)
Read these passages! Look up other passages of Scripture! Spend some time meditating on them! Be encouraged by them! Thank God for that to which and into which He has called you!
TO A NEW LEVEL OF GLORY!
“I press on toward the goal for the prize of the UPWARD CALL OF GOD in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14 ESV)
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the ETERNAL LIFE TO WHICH YOU WERE CALLED and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12 ESV)
“And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has CALLED YOU TO HIS ETERNAL GLORY IN CHRIST, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Peter 5:10 ESV)
Yes, God has called us to that which transcends our existence here! But to experience it we need to answer His call in this life! It is an onward and upward calling we have received. Are we answering? Are we progressing?
Have a great day RISING to the call of God!

ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 4c)
Read these passages! Look up other passages of Scripture! Spend some time meditating on them! Be encouraged by them! Thank God for that to which and into which He has called you!
TO A NEW WAY OF LIVING!
“To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE SAINTS [HOLY or HOLY ONES] together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:” (1 Corinthians 1:2 ESV)
“For God has not CALLED US for impurity, but IN HOLINESS.” (I Thessalonians 4:7 ESV)
“But if the unbelieving partner separates, let it be so. In such cases the brother or sister is not enslaved. God has CALLED YOU TO PEACE.” (1 Corinthians 7:15 ESV)
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who CALLED YOU OUT OF DARKNESS INTO HIS MARVELOUS LIGHT.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)
“(20) For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. (21) For TO THIS YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, SO THAT YOU MIGHT FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS.” (1 Peter 2:20-21 ESV)
“(8) Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. (9) Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for TO THIS YOU WERE CALLED, that you may obtain a blessing.” (1 Peter 3:8-9 ESV)
We have been called to be different than the world since we have been “called out of darkness into His wonderful light.” We have a higher calling than the calling of this world. Is the difference being seen? Are we living up to the calling? We are if we are following in the steps of Jesus!
Since we have been called to this manner of living, may we heed Paul’s urging:
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE CALLING TO WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN CALLED,” (Ephesians 4:1 ESV)
Have a great day LIVING WORTHY OF THE CALLING in Christ!

ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 4b)
Read these passages! Look up other passages of Scripture! Spend some time meditating on them! Be encouraged by them! Thank God for that to which and into which He has called you!
TO A NEW DISPOSITION!
“For you were CALLED TO FREEDOM, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13 ESV)
“having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the HOPE TO WHICH HE HAS CALLED YOU, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,” (Ephesians 1:18 ESV)
“There is one body and one Spirit -- just as you were CALLED TO THE ONE HOPE that belongs to your call” (Ephesians 4:4 ESV)
“And let the PEACE OF CHRIST rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were CALLED IN ONE BODY. And BE THANKFUL.” (Colossians 3:15 ESV)
Do those around us marvel at how we keep our chin up even in the midst of this world’s struggles? Do they wonder at how we are able to press on? Do they notice the FREEDOM we experience in the forgiveness we have through Jesus Christ? Do they see the stability and steadfastness we have in our lives because we know where our HOPE rests? Do they sense the PEACE we experience even in the midst of a chaotic world? Do they notice a spirit of THANKSGIVING regardless of circumstances? (note also 1 Thessalonians 5:18) God has called us so that these will be a part of our experience even in this life. These are blessings He has called us to possess!
Have a great day POSSESSING what you have been called to experience!

ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 4a)
To WHAT have we been called? Over the next four days we will focus on this part of “answering the call”. Read the selected passages! Look up other passages of Scripture! Spend some time meditating on them! Be encouraged by them! Thank God for that to which and into which He has called you!
TO A NEW RELATIONSHIP!
“ including you who are CALLED TO BELONG TO JESUS CHRIST,” (Romans 1:6 ESV)
“God is faithful, by whom you were CALLED INTO THE FELLOWSHIP OF HIS SON, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:9 ESV)
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be CALLED CHILDREN OF GOD; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” (1 John 3:1 ESV)
Yes, we are called into a relationship where we truly belong! We are called into a fellowship that is eternal! Oh, what love to count us as a member of the Family; a child of God! What a privilege to be able to wear the Family Name: Christian!
Have a great day cherishing the RELATIONSHIP God has made possible!

Answering The Call! (part 3)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (PART 3)
PICK UP THE PHONE! ANSWER HIS CALL!
When we call upon God (whether it be for help, wisdom, strength, or whatever) we expect a response. Why should it be any different in God’s expectations of His calling. When God calls He wants us to answer. But God doesn’t force the response. We could say it is like being called to dinner, and if we don’t come, we are the one’s who miss out.
Now, when the phone rings -- there are a lot of offers made. Some want us to think they are really trying to do us a “favor”, when all they actually want is to make a buck! Let’s be sure it is God’s call to which we are responding.
Note what we are called through:
“(13) But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. (14) To this HE CALLED YOU THROUGH OUR GOSPEL, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 ESV)
Yes, it (the Gospel) truly is “Good News”. An offer to benefit our whole being. An unmerited “favor” ready to be accepted.
Note what the calling is associated with.
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who CALLED US TO HIS OWN GLORY AND EXCELLENCE,” (2 Peter 1:3 ESV)
We can depend on the glory and goodness of His nature to bring blessing as we respond to His call! God has no ulterior motive than to benefit and bless our lives for now and eternity.
Note whose purpose the calling is associated with:
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are CALLED ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE.” (Romans 8:28 ESV)
Since it is His purposes which shall stand (Proverbs 19:21) it is those purposes to which we need to respond. God’s purposes are right! His purposes are good! His purposes are everlasting! And so will be the life linked to them.
Have a great day answering HIS call!

Answering The Call! (part 2)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 2)
SOME WHO ANSWERED THE CALL!
When a call comes in, we have several choices. Among those choices are: 1) We can just let it ring and allow the answering machine to handle the call. 2) We can answer and accept the call. 3) We can answer and say we are too busy or just not interested. 4) We can simply answer, hang up, and then ignore the call.
Some calls we receive may be very impersonal. We much prefer personal calls. However, even the personal ones are sometimes ignored. Here are some who personally ACCEPTED the call.
Note Peter, Andrew, James, and John:
“(18) While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. (19) And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ (20) IMMEDIATELY THEY LEFT THEIR NETS AND FOLLOWED HIM. (21) And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. (22) IMMEDIATELY THEY LEFT THE BOAT AND THEIR FATHER AND FOLLOWED HIM.”(Matthew 4:18-22 ESV)
I could have understood if they had said, “let us first roll up our nets and help put things away.” But they didn’t. They could have pointed to their bumper sticker that said “I’d Rather Be Fishing!” But they didn’t. They accepted the call, followed, and became fishers of men! And that is what they were called to become.
Note Matthew:
“As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And HE ROSE AND FOLLOWED HIM.” (Matthew 9:9 ESV)
Would we have understood if Matthew had said, “first let me go deposit today’s collection”? But he didn’t. He understood and accepted the Lord’s call.
And note Paul:
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, CALLED TO BE AN APOSTLE, set apart for the gospel of God,” (Romans 1:1 ESV)
Paul could have said, “But I am zealous for the work I am in now.” We know how sincere and zealous he was in persecuting the church. Or he could have focused on his rich heritage and present position. But all that was “rubbish” compared to accepting the call of Christ (read Philippians 3:7-11) When Paul received and understood the call, he accepted! And what a fruitful ministry he was a part of!
Our Lord has a personal interest in us. He has called us to follow. He has a work for us to do? Have we answered? Have we accepted?
Have a great day LISTENING to the call!

Answering The Call! (part 1)
ANSWERING THE CALL! (part 1)
DID YOU LEAVE THE ANSWERING MACHINE ON?
Do you get frustrated when you want to talk to a person, but all you get is their answering machine or an electronic recording instructing you to punch more buttons on your phone? What an impersonal world in which we live! Then there are some who let their answering machine intercept their calls even when they are home.
Is this the way we are with God? Does He keep calling us, yet we fail to pick up the phone, letting Him listen to the “machine message” of our life? Consider the following individuals who, in this sense, left their answering machines on.
Consider Felix:
“And as he [Paul] reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, ‘GO AWAY for the present. WHEN I GET AN OPPORTUNITY I WILL SUMMON YOU.’” (Acts 24:25 ESV)
Felix’s machine was saying: “I’m sorry, I can’t answer your call right now, but if you will leave a message I’ll get back to you when it’s more convenient in my life.”
Consider some invited to the great banquet in one of Jesus’ parables:
“(18) But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’ (19) And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’ (20) And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’” (Luke 14:18-20 ESV)
The property buyer’s machine was saying: “I’m sorry, I can’t answer your call right now, but if you will leave a message I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able to buy up the rest of these lots on which I plan to build condominiums so I can rest and take life easy and then be able to eventually clear my mind to answer your call.”
The livestock buyer’s machine was saying: “I’m sorry, I can’t answer your call right now, but if you will leave a message I’ll get back to you as soon as I tear down my corrals and build bigger ones, build up my herds so I can be set for many years and take life easy. Then when I’ve had ample time to rest up I’ll get back to you.”
The newlywed’s machine was saying: “I’m sorry, I can’t answer your call right now, but if you will leave a message I’ll get back to you as soon as we are able to get our house in order, the bills paid, the kids through college, and I have more time after retirement; that is when we’ve completed our traveling abroad, of course.”
What is the “machine message” of your life saying? Or have you gone ahead and picked up the phone and answered the call?
Have a great day prepared to ANSWER GOD’S CALLING!

Life Performance!
When a conductor CONDUCTS a piece of music, on what does he (or she) focus? What would become of the masterpiece if the conductor decided to let the audience set the tempo or decide what part each section should play. Someone has noted, “A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.” [original source unknown] The conductor focuses the attention on the composer’s score and CONDUCTS the orchestra accordingly. Though the conductor might turn and address the crowd from time to time, the direction does not come from it.
When we consider our own CONDUCT in life, is it in accordance with the desires of the crowd or do we remain focused on the manuscript of the Composer of all life? Our CONDUCT will generally be based on that which we focus on the most. The principles we hold dear and the values we hold highest are what will most often set the tempo for our life. And like the conductor, we should be willing to address the crowd with the truth of God’s manuscript for living, but not allow the crowd to direct the symphony of our life.
James exhorted…
“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his GOOD CONDUCT let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.” (James 3:13 ESV)
And Peter urged…
“(14) As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, (15) but as he who called you is holy, you also BE HOLY IN ALL YOUR CONDUCT, (16) since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV)
In both of these passages, the word translated “CONDUCT” comes from the Greek “anastrophe”, which refers to the manner of life or living, CONDUCT, or behavior. The verb “anastrepho” literally means to turn back or return (“ana”, back and “strepho”, return). [source: W. E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words] The focus of our CONDUCT always needs to be turned back to that which conforms to the holiness of God. Continually focusing our vision on the truth of His Word will be the key in keeping our life turned that direction as well. This may mean our back being toward the crowd. However, maintaining CONDUCT that reveals the wisdom of God will give the crowd something worth following.
Peter also exhorted those to whom he wrote…
“(11) Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. (12) KEEP YOUR CONDUCT among the Gentiles HONORABLE, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, THEY MAY SEE YOUR GOOD DEEDS AND GLORIFY GOD ON THE DAY OF VISITATION.” (1 Peter 2:11-12 ESV)

The Choice!
Life is filled with choices. We make choices every day, some of which are more significant than others. When facing choices with regard to our health, serious consideration should be given to what will enhance our life and what could become harmful to it. The choice to develop good habits with regard to eating, sleeping, exercise, etc. is important while at the same time there must be the choice to refrain from anything that would lead to the development of habits harmful to the body.
Just as this is vital concerning our physical life, it is even more so with regard to spiritual life. Unfortunately many often don’t give these choices as much consideration as they do what they will eat or even wear. When faced with life choices we should seriously consider the impact those choices will have on our spiritual well-being.
As Moses was preparing to hand over the leadership of Israel to Joshua, he pointed the people’s attention toward the blessing of continued obedience and warned them of the consequences of failing to listen to God. Moses then urged the people toward the best choice.
We read…
“(19) I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE, that you and your offspring may live, (20) loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for HE IS YOUR LIFE and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” (Deuteronomy 30:19-20 ESV)
“CHOOSE LIFE”! In choosing LIFE there was to be the acknowledgement that God was their LIFE! Without Him where would they have been? Still in the slavery of Egypt! God, having protected and provided for them all through their journey toward the promised land, would the choice not be an easy one? Unfortunately the history that follows reveals many choices that took the nation away from God and the LIFE they could have had.
How about us? What is our choice? Jesus referred to Himself as “the way, and the truth, and THE LIFE”! (John 14:6) In this same chapter Jesus told His disciples, “Because I live, you also will live.” (John 14:19b) Jesus was to be seen as their LIFE link!
Where would we be without Jesus? Still in the slavery of sin! To choose to follow Jesus is to “CHOOSE LIFE”! And every choice we make needs to be considered with that relationship and our eternal destiny in mind!
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae he urged…
“(2) Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (3) For you have died, and YOUR LIFE IS HIDDEN WITH CHRIST IN GOD. (4) When CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:2-4 ESV)
“CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE”! Is He? This life is filled with many distractions that force us to continually be making choices? Do we daily acknowledge how all our choices relate to the LIFE we have because of Christ and the hope we have for it eternally?
John emphatically stated…
“Whoever HAS THE SON HAS LIFE; whoever does NOT HAVE THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT HAVE LIFE.” (1 John 5:12 ESV)
Sounds like an easy choice, doesn’t it? Not just the best choice, but the only real choice to be made. May Jesus be the continual choice FOR LIFE!
Have a great day CHOOSING THE ONE WHO GAVE US LIFE BY GIVING HIS!

Living A Lie?
Lying may be done either verbally or through the actions of life. Lies are told in an attempt to hide the truth and it is the same with regard to living a lie. Some people have lived the life of an imposter; taking on the identity of another person. When doing so they are faced with continually looking behind their back to see if the truth is catching up with them. When such individuals are found out, sometimes they are relieved because the pressure to keep up the charade has then been taken off of them. “Charades” may make for a good game, but it in no way makes a good life.
John stated…
“(5) This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. (6) If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, WE LIE AND DO NOT PRACTICE THE TRUTH.” (1 John 1:5-6 ESV)
This is the life of the hypocrite. A claim of spirituality is made to impress others while the reality is quite the converse. One of the real dangers of living a lie is that one can reach a point of beginning to believe it themselves. It is possible for one to live in sin while convincing themselves that things are really going alright. A good show might be put on with many people being fooled, but the truth of the sin inevitably finds them out. (note Numbers 32:23) And the One to Whom we will all give an account (Romans 14:12) is fully aware of what is going on within.
John went on to state the position of denial, but also the blessing of proper acknowledgment.
“(8) If we say we have no sin, WE DECEIVE OURSELVES, and the truth is not in us. (9) IF WE CONFESS our sins, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE US our sins AND TO CLEANSE US from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9 ESV)
Sin must be recognized as sin. If we have been living a lie, let us turn to LIVING IN THE LIGHT of the truth. Through WALKING IN THE LIGHT of God as Jesus is in the light, we will find the continual cleansing that comes from the power of His blood. (1 John 1:7) Rather than living a “lie”, let us add the “F” of faithfulness to God so that we can truly live the “liFe” He desires for us.
Have a great day TRULY LIVING THE GOOD LIFE!

Liability Or Asset!
Among the characteristics of our life, we may have some traits that are assets while others are liabilities. Some actions work for us and are destined to produce a good reward in return while others will work against us and ultimately bring us down. There are people who will do and say almost anything to get what they want or aid them in moving up in society. However, some of the abilities to do so may one day prove to be a liability rather than an asset. An ability some have developed will someday clearly prove to be as follows: “The Ability To Lie Is A Liability.” [source: church sign]
Consider where this ability is getting the devil. When he speaks, it is out of his own character as he is “a liar and the father of lies.” (John 8:44 ESV) “Lienese” is his dialect as there is no truth in him. It is the language of doom for those who speak it, as the destiny of liars is declared to be a lake of fire. (Revelation 21:8)
In this same chapter of John, Jesus stressed…
“(31) So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, (32) and YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.”” (John 8:31-32 ESV)
Life or any future hope based on lies will ultimately become a liability. It is in accepting and continuing in the TRUTH of Jesus that we find the greatest asset we could possibly possess. Denying the TRUTH does not change it, therefore we might as well accept it and live by it. Such an approach to life will ultimately work to our greatest advantage because of the supreme freedom that is ours in Christ.
Paul urged those at Colossae…
“(9) DO NOT LIE TO ONE ANOTHER, seeing that you HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD SELF with its practices (10) and HAVE PUT ON THE NEW SELF, which is BEING RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:9-10 ESV)
Rather than adopting the devil’s dialect, let us be like God in Whom there is no lie.(Titus 1:2) It is His essence that is to become more and more evident in our life. May it be so in life and speech!
Have a great day SPEAKING GOD’S LANGUAGE!

Father Knows Best!
I remember the old program “Father Knows Best” starring Robert Young. Maybe you also remember watching it or have seen some of the reruns. In every program there was a conflict with which the family or a family member would wrestle. There would be anxiety. There would be tears. Sometimes there would be some anger over a situation. But by the end of the program the father of the family was always able to calmly help the family (or family member) work through the situation. His wisdom and judgment always seemed to prove right. Therefore every episode ended on a happy note.
Whether it be “Father Knows Best”, “Leave It To Beaver”, or “The Brady Bunch” -- solving life’s situations often proves more challenging than how those thirty minute programs seemed to make it appear. I know, as a parent, the challenges and times of struggling with a sense of inadequacy and a lack of wisdom. I did not know what was BEST in all situations. But by the grace of God our children appear to have matured well emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually.
When it comes to Father KNOWS BEST, our Heavenly Father is truly the One Who does! He KNOWS BEST in all situations. His advice, His council, His wisdom, and His direction can always be counted upon.
The Hebrew writer stated:
“(10) For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but HE [GOD] DISCIPLINES US FOR OUR GOOD, THAT WE MAY SHARE HIS HOLINESS. (11) For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but LATER IT YIELDS THE PEACEFUL FRUIT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED BY IT.” (Hebrews 12:10-11 ESV)
God, speaking through Isaiah, reminded His people...
“(17) Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the LORD your God, WHO TEACHES YOU TO PROFIT, WHO LEADS YOU IN THE WAY YOU SHOULD GO.’” (Isaiah 48:17 ESV)
The NIV reads, …WHO TEACHES YOU WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU….”
Let us continue to look to the wisdom of our Heavenly Father. He Who knows us BEST can BEST direct us in the way we should go. Through His direction He is able to make our life end on a joyful note.
Have a great day TRUSTING THE FATHER WHO ALWAYS KNOWS BEST!

Words!
Sometimes we open our mouth and get ourselves into trouble. Perhaps our experience has been “open mouth, insert foot.” Then there are times we might snap at people who appear to be trying to put words in our mouth. How wise we are when we keep James’ advice in mind. (James 1:19) It is the “perfect man” who does not stumble in what they say. (James 3:2) Do we still struggle?
We may marvel at the marvelous words David spoke through the many psalms he wrote. However, his choices and words did not always take Him down the right path. Remember the occasion when David opened his mouth and it led to adultery with Bathsheba. (2 Samuel 11:3-5) He opened his mouth again in an attempt to cover up his sin (2 Samuel 11:6-13), but Uriah was too loyal of a soldier to go home while the army was still out in the field. Then David sent a letter by the hand of Uriah himself with orders that would ultimately lead to Uriah’s death. (2 Samuel 11:14-17) David was later confronted, acknowledged his sin, and did receive forgiveness for it. (2 Samuel 12:7-13)
In a portion of a psalm written by David when Nathan had confronted him over this incident we read…
“(15) O LORD, OPEN MY LIPS, AND MY MOUTH WILL DECLARE YOUR PRAISE.” (Psalm 51:15 ESV)
Our own words may sometimes get us into trouble. However, we will always be better off when we allow God to open our mouth to SAY THE WORDS HE WOULD HAVE US SAY. If one is going to put words in our mouth, we can always be safe when that one is God. His Words are WORTH REPEATING AND SHARING for He has declared that the word that goes out from His mouth will not return to Him empty but will accomplish that which He has purposed and succeed in that for which He has sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)
David went on to state…
“(16) For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. (17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART, O GOD, YOU WILL NOT DESPISE.” (Psalm 51:16-17 ESV)
It is the heart touchable by God that will produce the best actions and speech. May our heart be continually open to Him so that when our lips open, the words will promote the purposes of God.
Have a great day DECLARING PRAISEWORTHY SPEECH!

Recipe Ingredients!
Sometimes recipes are similar, but altering or adding just a few specific ingredients can bring about completely different results. For example note the following two recipes:
Ingredients of recipe #1: flour and water.
Ingredients of recipe #2: flour, baking powder, salt, butter, eggs, vanilla, and milk.
The first recipe will make paste while the second is a basic cake recipe. Perhaps one might wonder where the paste goes when the other ingredients are added. Someone has simply stated the comparison in the following way: “Put flour and water together and you get paste, but add butter and eggs and you get a cake.” Agreeably the first becomes very sticky though useful for holding things together while the other becomes something enjoyably edible. It takes the other ingredients added to what could make paste to bring about the delightful body of a cake.
As we consider the ingredients of our Christian walk, we know from James the importance and necessity of FAITH AND WORKS going together. James even summed up his point by noting that just like the body without the spirit is dead, so is FAITH without the WORKS. (James 2:26) As an example James noted the life of Abraham.
We read…
“(21) Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? (22) You see that FAITH was ACTIVE along WITH HIS WORKS, and FAITH WAS COMPLETED BY HIS WORKS; (23) and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness’ -- and HE WAS CALLED A FRIEND OF GOD.” (James 2:21-23 ESV)
To consider the “flour” of FAITH and the “water” of WORKS, perhaps the result is sometimes the stickiness of pride in what self can accomplish. Though WORKS are necessary and should even be viewed as a natural outgrowth of our FAITH, there is the need to maintain a proper perspective. To add the “eggs” of the essence of humility, the “salt” of selfless service, and the “vanilla” of virtue along with other ingredients supplemental to our faith (note 2 Peter 1:5-7) -- all stirred in with the “ladle” of love -- we come up with a life that is sweet and tasteful in the eyes of God and beneficial to those around us.
Unless we follow the recipe of God for our life we will come out a sticky mess. Let us continue to blend together the godly ingredients God has outlined for the Christian life. Living properly before God will provide His joy and peace as the “icing on the cake” for both now and eternity.
Have a great day FOLLOWING THE FATHER’S FORMULA!

Fruit Of Frustration!
Have you ever undertaken a project of some kind, listened to or read the instructions that pertained to it, decided you had a better idea on how to get it done, and then got frustrated when it just wouldn’t come together right? Thinking the assembly is so easy there is no need to waste time looking at the directions. Thinking something could be done quicker by leaving out a few steps thought to be insignificant. Has that been our experience?
The reality is there are many things that are a bit more complicated than they might at first appear. This is no more true than when it comes to considering how we are to live. History is full of examples of people (and nations) deciding to do their own thing and then having to reap the fruit of their actions. Much could be avoided if mankind would just listen to what the Creator of life has to say about living it. Even though the nation of Israel was forewarned, they still again and again chose to depart from God’s commands and do their own thing. They even at times credited other gods with having granted the blessings God had provided.
Prior to Moses’ death and Joshua’s leading of the nation into the promised land, attention was brought to some blessings and curses. God had Moses share the blessings that would be received if the nation continued in obedience and the curses that would come upon them if they turned from Him and His Will. (Deuteronomy 27-28)
Among the warnings we read…
“(15) But IF YOU WILL NOT OBEY THE VOICE OF THE LORD YOUR GOD or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. (16) Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. (17) Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. (18) Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. (19) Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. (20) THE LORD WILL SEND ON YOU curses, confusion, and FRUSTRATION IN ALL THAT YOU UNDERTAKE TO DO, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, BECAUSE YOU HAVE FORSAKEN ME.” (Deuteronomy 28:15-20 ESV)
If they turned from God’s Way, whatever they undertook to do would be met with frustration. Granted there are various things (including the uncooperativeness of others) that can factor in to whether something works out or not even when we have chosen to do things in accordance with God’s Will. However, when we do find ourselves frustrated with the results of our efforts, perhaps that should prompt us to re-evaluate WHOSE WILL AND DIRECTIONS we have relied upon. When the Psalmist noted God frustrating the plans of the nations, he went on to state that the “counsel of the LORD stands forever.” (Psalm 33:10-11)
Like Jeremiah, let us admit…
“(23) I know, O LORD, that THE WAY OF MAN IS NOT IN HIMSELF, that IT IS NOT IN MAN WHO WALKS TO DIRECT HIS STEPS.” (Jeremiah 10:23 ESV)
When we reap the fruit of frustration may it redirect our focus toward God and His principles for living. Every step we take in life should be considered in light of what He has revealed. Let us allow the fruit of frustration to turn our focus toward God, acknowledging that HIS WAY IS ALWAYS RIGHT!
Have a great day ENJOYING THE FRUIT OF GOD’S WAY!

Go!
It is possible to be told “Go!” with the speaker’s desire to send us away because they simply want us out of there. “Go!” “Get away!” “Get out of here!” Each of these could convey the desire to have us to leave and get away from them. They may not care where we go or what we do, they just want us gone!
Other times we might be told “Go!” because we are being sent to do something; being sent to fulfill a specific task. Perhaps the “Go!” in that context is easier to accept.
If someone tells us “Go!” -- meaning “Get out of here!” -- AS WE GO we might wonder what we did to make them so mad that they didn’t want us around. To be treated in such a way could cause all kinds of things to go through our mind causing us to not feel good about the situation. However, when told “Go!” with a specific task in mind, AS WE GO our mind may begin pouring over ways in which we can fulfill the purpose of our going and our eyes may be watchful for the opportunities that arise to do so.
Jesus told His disciples to …
“(19) GO therefore AND MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20 ) TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED YOU. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20 ESV)
When Jesus told His disciples to “Go!” it was not for the purpose of getting rid of them. In the text above He told them He would be with them “always, to the end of the age.” (vs.20) Jesus told them “Go!” because He was sending them on a mission. The Greek word “poreuomai” translated “go” (according to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words) means to go on one’s way or proceed from one place to another. Strong’s Lexicon notes its meaning being “to pursue the journey on which one has entered” or “to continue on one’s journey.” The tense in which the word is used in this passage seems to convey the sense of “AS YOU GO.”
AS WE GO! While going through the journey of life there is to be for us a continuing mission of observing all that the Lord had commanded the disciples to do. That would include making disciples by teaching them of Jesus, baptizing them, and teaching them to observe what Jesus had commanded, and the cycle continues as it began with the Lord’s disciples. AS WE GO may we keep our eyes open and minds prepared for the opportunities along the way.
Have a great day GOING WITH THE LORD’S PURPOSES IN MIND!

Life Shaping Realities
What is the purpose of warnings? Is it to discourage us? Is it to take away our joy? Is it to take the fun out of life? Is it a sign of negativity we would rather live without? Or do we consider warnings to be a blessing because our safety depends upon them. There is the reality of dangers to which our attention needs to be drawn. As we recognize this with regard to physical life, do we not also acknowledge it in association with our spiritual well-being? Still, it seems that some think life would be better if certain things are ignored rather than taught.
Recently while searching for some information online, I came across the website of a local group and read the description of their ministry. The last paragraph (containing two sentences) pointed out that this group is “loving, joyous, positive, musical, upbeat, instructive, and uplifting!” Perhaps that sounds very good. However, how far did the CONCERN for being “instructive” go? The last sentence of this paragraph pointed out that “Such concerns as hell, damnation, negativity, the devil, evil, unworthiness, and sin are not present” in their teachings.
Though these were noted as “CONCERNS” it appears they were not going to CONCERN themselves with those matters and their visitors would not have to fear hearing such topics taught. Was that a denial of the existence of those realities that the Scriptures do address? Is that what their third to the last paragraph meant that reads “Prayers, meditations, affirmations, and denials, are tools we can use to raise our consciousness and shape our lives for the better.”
Is this the “instructive” manner in which Jesus (the Master Teacher) taught? Certainly He spoke of forgiveness and love and mercy and many other uplifting subjects. However, He also instructed toward moving away from that which would bring condemnation. The woman caught in the act of adultery (John 8) stood condemned for her sin. Though Jesus chose to forgive rather than condemn, He still called it like it was when He said, “…go, and from now on SIN NO MORE.” (John 8:11b) Also, when Jesus connected again with the man he had earlier healed by the pool of Bethesda, he told him, “See, you are well! SIN NO MORE, THAT NOTHING WORSE MAY HAPPEN to you.” (John 5:14b)
On an occasion when some told Jesus about some Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices we read…
“(2) And he answered them, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? (3) No, I tell you; but UNLESS YOU REPENT, YOU WILL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH. (4) Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? (5) No, I tell you; but UNLESS YOU REPENT, YOU WILL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH.’” (Luke 13:2-5 ESV)
There is a reality with which to come to grips. Are we going to acknowledge the warning or consider it non-existent? Recognizing the need for acknowledging sin as sin and repenting of it serves to shape our actions and choices in life.
When noting the inclusion of Gentiles in the promises of God in Christ, Paul stated…
“Note then THE KINDNESS AND THE SEVERITY OF GOD: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.” (Romans 11:22 ESV)
Whether it be God’s kindness or His severity, He is completely righteous in what He does. (i.e. Nehemiah 9:33) To CONCERN ourselves with the promises of God and ignore (or deny) His warnings will cause us to lose some of the power to urge us toward more godly living. Our lives are shaped by the realities we recognize. Acknowledging dangers of things detrimental to our physical well-being serve to determine life habits. The same is true spiritually. Denying these truths will not make us better people.
Have a great day ACCEPTING THE WHOLE COUNSEL OF GOD!

Mind Works!
Nehemiah was a great encourager of others. When he began drawing the people together for the task of rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem, even though there was some opposition attempting to discourage and stop the work, Nehemiah mentioned God’s hand being upon him for good and that King Artaxerxes also support him in the work. As the work was about to begin the plan was met with the response, “LET US RISE UP AND BUILD.” (Nehemiah 2:18) Can we detect some eagerness in those words? Can we sense the resolve to GET DOWN and put the shoulder to the task? Soon the work was underway and the progress became visible because “THE PEOPLE HAD A MIND TO WORK.” (Nehemiah 4:6) Though ability to work is conditional to physical ability and available resources, regardless of how strong one might be if there is no “mind to work” (no willingness) the work will not be done; at least by those individuals. God blessed the labors of the people at this time because they resolved to get the work done. However, was everyone on board?
Reading through Nehemiah chapter 3 we find a number of groups and individuals specifically mentioned with regard to the work of rebuilding the wall and making the city of Jerusalem once again secure. There were priests involved. (3:1-2, 22, 28) It is a very good thing when the spiritual leaders are willing to ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES along with the people. Then there were a number of individuals and clans mentioned (3:3-32), as well as goldsmiths (3:8 & 31-32), a perfumer (3:8), merchants (3:31-32), and even a man and his daughters made the list (3:12). What a collection of people to join in such a rebuilding! How sad, however, that there always seems to be some group who appear to view themselves as being above GETTING DOWN to the work needed doing.
Amongst this varied list we read…
“And next to them the Tekoites repaired, BUT THEIR NOBLES WOULD NOT STOOP TO SERVE THEIR LORD.” (Nehemiah 3:5 ESV)
The New King James Version reads that the “nobles DID NOT PUT THEIR SHOULDERS TO THE WORK of their Lord.”
The New Living Translation reads: “Next were the people from Tekoa, though THEIR LEADERS REFUSED TO HELP.”
Many were involved, but not these. They were not willing to ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES. There was no willingness to dirty their hands with such menial labor. When some are too “uppity” in their own estimation of self there is often a refusal to GET DOWN to help with good works in need of being accomplished. Look at that word “uppity” again. What a “pity” some are so “up” on themselves they can’t GET DOWN to the business of serving shoulder to shoulder with other servants of God. The mind -- not the muscle -- in such cases has gotten in the way of the work.
Sometimes the more position or wealth one has the less willing they are to GET DOWN to serve in meeting day-to-day needs. Paul urged Timothy to instruct the wealthy to be “rich in good works”. (1 Timothy 6:18) Then in his letter to Titus Paul urged him to insist toward being “careful to devote themselves to good works.” (Titus 3:8) What is our own mindset? Is it getting in the way or does it produce an eagerness to be involved? When the mind works properly in humbly focusing on what needs to be done, much can be accomplished to glory of God.
Have a great day BRINGING BRAIN AND BRAWN TOGETHER FOR GOD’S GLORY!

To Be So Much More!
“I’m only human.” That expression is often used as an excuse for one’s blunders or weaknesses. True, we are imperfect beings. We sin and are in continual need of the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus. (1 John 1:7-9) There are certain actions that may be understood as being indicative of mere humanity, but is that all we are?
Of the divisiveness among the Corinthians Paul stated…
“(1) But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. (2) I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, (3) for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and BEHAVING ONLY IN A HUMAN WAY? (4) For when one says, ‘I follow Paul,’ and another, ‘I follow Apollos,’ are you not being merely human?” (1 Corinthians 3:1-4 ESV)
The Greek refers to walking around as man (anthropos). If we merely follow in the ways of humanity, how much can we expect our life to become. It is in following in the steps of Jesus (1 Peter 2:21) and accepting the provision of God to become “partakers of the DIVINE NATURE” (2 Peter 1:4) that our life can be elevated beyond being merely human to living as the SPIRITUAL BEINGS God created us to be. It was in the image of God that man was first created (Genesis 1:27) and though sin has marred that image, in Christ that image can be renewed. (Colossians 3:10)
Paul would later on remind the Christians at Corinth that their body was the “temple of the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 6:19) Rather than walking around as mere humans, let us move about through life acknowledging the holiness our life is to possess. May we reveal our sincere appreciation to God for His blessings and promises by earnestly striving to live as godly a life as is humanly possible.
Have a great day MARKED BY GODLY LIVING!

Equipped!
[06/09/2007 “teEn-MAIL”]
EQUIPPED!
When you have a job to do, in order to get it done correctly you need to have the proper equipment. Have your ever used the handle of a screwdriver or even pliers as a hammer? It may work for a small job, but even then a hammer is better. I know there have been times when I have substituted a tool simply because I didn’t want to take the extra time or make the effort to go get the right one. On some of those occasions I have found myself spending more time trying to do the job with the improper equipment than it would have taken me to have gone and gotten the right tool. Being properly equipped may take some effort, some extra time, and even some planning, but it’s the best way to get a work done right!
God has made it possible for us to be equipped for HIS WORK. And there is some effort, time, and planning connected to this equipping. Paul wrote…
“(16) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be COMPETENT, EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 ESV)
God has given us HIS WORD for the purpose of equipping us for HIS WORK. Some people have turned to business techniques, positive mental attitude methods, social norms (society’s rules), etc. for equipping themselves for GOD’S WORKS instead of starting with GOD’S INSTRUCTION. For us to best be equipped for the works God gives us to do we must spend time in HIS WORD. We must put forth the effort to learn what He has revealed and then plan how we will put that into practice. Therefore, as you read your Bible, open your heart to GOD’S WORD so that it may teach, reprove, correct, and train you in righteousness (things that are right); then you will be allowing Him to equip you for every good work!
Have a great day BECOMING EQUIPPED FOR GOD’S GLORIOUS WORK!

Knock, Knock!
Heard any good “Knock, Knock” jokes lately? Or have you recently had someone special knock at your door? When someone knocks do you ask, “Who’s there?” and listen to see if you recognize the voice? Or do you just run to the door, swing it open, and hope it is not someone you don’t want in.
Why do people knock rather than walk right in? Well, it’s the polite thing to do. Also, if they are INVITED IN they know they are WELCOME. How would you feel if you knocked on a friend’s door, were asked “who’s there?”, told them who you were, and then they either ignored you or told you to go away? You would know you weren’t WELCOME, wouldn’t you? You would also wonder about that friendship.
Do we treat everyone who knocks at our door the same? Salesmen may be treated politely, but they don’t get a quick WELCOME like our friends do. Also, when relatives drop by we might jump up and down, hug them, and even drag them inside. It all depends on the relationship or who it is that is doing the knocking.
In Revelation we read of one who comes knocking:
“Behold, I stand at the door AND KNOCK. If anyone HEARS MY VOICE AND OPENS the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20 ESV)
Have you let Jesus in? He wants in! But He is not going to just walk into your life. He knocks. He speaks. He’s ready. He’s eager. But you have to OPEN THE DOOR to let Him into your life. He wants to feast with you. He wants to share the refreshing Holy Spirit with you. He wants to nourish you with His words. He wants to give you water that you will never thirst. He wants to give you Himself, the Bread of Life. How will He feel if you ignore Him or tell Him to go away? He loves you. That’s why He died for you. He is the GUEST YOU DON’T WANT TO NEGLECT INVITING IN. In fact, once you let Him in He’ll want to remain and live with you. What an opportunity His knock brings. What blessing His residency with us provides.
Have a great day WITH YOUR LORD!

On The Level!
When I talk to small children, I like to stoop down to their level so that we can be closer to being eye to eye. Rather than looking down upon them, physically and conversationally getting on their level opens the door for being able to RELATE TO THEM. By doing this I am able to appear more approachable to them and it allows me to approach them as well.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth, he stated his approach to ministry in the following way.
“(19) For though I am free from all, I HAVE MADE MYSELF A SERVANT TO ALL, that I might win more of them. (20) To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. (21) To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. (22) To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I HAVE BECOME ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE, THAT BY ALL MEANS I MIGHT SAVE SOME.” (1 Corinthians 9:19-22 ESV)
I think Paul’s statement of becoming “all things to all people” has been misunderstood and abused by some in the Name of Christ. Though Paul had Apostolic authority he did not brandish his position in order to coerce submission to him. Personal rights that could have served to be an obstacle in sharing the gospel with others, he was willing to set aside. (note 1 Corinthians 9:12-15) Following in the footsteps of Jesus, Paul humbly took on the role of a servant as he sought to find the level on which he could BEST RELATE to various individuals at varying points in their life. It was not that to the drunkard he would have become a drunkard or to the thief he would have become a thief. He still kept his life on the level with regarding to striving to please God. Neither did Paul change the Gospel message to please a certain audience. Had he done so, that in itself would have served as a hindrance to the gospel of Jesus. Remember his sharp rebuke with regard to what the Galatians had accepted. (Galatians 1:6-9) It bore repeating to the church at Galatia and it bears remembering for us today. Paul simply adapted his approach depending on the audience (or individual) he was reaching toward.
Coming across on another person’s level helps them see we are able to RELATE TO THEM in where they are in their walk of life as we try to RELATE TO THEM the good news of Jesus that even in the twenty-first century can still RELATE TO THEM. In humility may we seek eye level with those around us so that our genuine concern for their souls can be seen and the door opened for sharing the message of salvation found only in Jesus Christ our Lord. For the weak struggling in their faith (or to come to faith) let us be honest that we don’t have it all together, but our own growth continues. Let us also be willing to acknowledge the hard questions, but with a desire to dig into the Scriptures with these individuals to find the answers. Certainly we, like Paul, need to take an unwavering stand on the truth of the Scriptures. However, rather than being judgmental, let us lovingly and patiently lead others closer to the truth of God’s Word. May our own selves not become an obstacle to leading others to Jesus.
Have a great day SETTING SELF ASIDE FOR THE SAKE OF SOULS!

The Will!
Requests. Petitions. Pleadings. Sometimes they come with great intensity. Parents plead with their children to settle down and behave. Children plead with their parents for things they want. Neighbors plead with neighbors to be respectful of property lines or control neighborhood noise. Sometimes that pleading is met with reluctance while at other times it is met with wisdom. Perhaps it is not always easy to tell the difference between those two, but what is our perspective when it comes to our PRAYING TO GOD? Someone has said, “Prayer is not conquering God’s reluctance, but taking hold of God’s willingness.” [original source unknown]
When Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow pleading with the unjust judge, this judge’s willingness to grant her request was only because her persistence was wearing him out. (Luke 18:4-5) However, Jesus did not say that was the case with the Heavenly Father.
We read…
“(7) And WILL NOT GOD GIVE JUSTICE TO HIS ELECT, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? (8) I tell you, HE WILL GIVE justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:7-8 ESV)
PRAYER is an exercise of faith! Do we have it? How much do we trust God? When Jesus exhorted against being anxious He noted the Father’s awareness of our needs (Matthew 6:32) and His WILLINGNESS to provide. (Matthew 6:30) Still, Jesus gave us the example of including such cares in our PRAYERS. (Matthew 6:11) Our Heavenly Father’s Willingness, rather than reluctance, should greatly encourage us.
When it came to Jesus’ own PRAYER, what perspective did He exemplify?
“And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, BUT AS YOU WILL.’” (Matthew 26:39 ESV)
Three times Jesus prayed that prayer (Matthew 26:39,42, and 44), but He did so reaching for THE WILL of the Father to be done. Though He was not spared, the Hebrew writer tells us Jesus was heard, not for the intensity of His pleading, but “because of his reverence.” (Hebrews 5:7 ESV)
When things don’t go our way how quick are we to cry, “Why me?” when we should be just as ready to ask “Why me?” when we are blessed? God gives to us, not because we deserve it, but because He loves us and is WILLING to give. May we reach toward His WILLINGNESS as we PRAY with our own WILLINGNESS to accept what He in His wisdom WILLS to do.
Have a great day ENJOYING PRAYER AS A MEANS TO GOD’S ENDS!

The Greatest Loss!
There are many things in life that can be lost, some of which are more valuable than others. There are things that are lost that can never be regained such as one-of-a-kind items or personal things lost in a fire or other disaster. Then there are things lost that are very difficult to regain such as self-respect or one’s reputation. That which is valued most is safeguarded most. What does our living reveal MATTERS THE MOST to us?
Jesus exhorted…
“(24) Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (25) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (26) For WHAT WILL IT PROFIT A MAN IF HE GAINS THE WHOLE WORLD AND FORFEITS HIS LIFE [Greek “psuche”, soul]? Or what shall a man give in return for his life [Greek “psuche”, soul]?’” (Matthew 16:24-26 ESV)
While much is being amassed and protected in this world, too many are living unmindful of the greatest loss they can suffer. Though others may be striving for more of the world’s real-estate, let us remember the REAL ESTATE is the mansion prepared in heaven. It is only through GIVING OURSELVES OVER TO JESUS that this greatest loss of our soul can be avoided. To deny this will not change the reality. Therefore, let us eagerly deny self, take up our cross and follow Him. LOSING OUR SELF IN HIM is our greatest gain.
Have a great day SET ON HEAVENLY REAL-ESTATE!

Some Things Can't Be Chained!
Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that seem to present no good thing. In such situations we need to keep in mind God’s promise “...that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). Paul’s assertion was not that all things are good, but that God can work them out for good. We may not always be quick to see it, but if we keep looking we will find the good. You know how I know? First of all God is true to His word! Secondly, I have experienced the fulfillment of that promise in my life. Oh, yes, I wondered and did some struggling, but as I looked I found the good. Sometimes God was simply preparing me for some other task. Other times God was using me as an example for the benefit of others. And sometimes I just needed the challenge to do some growing.
Paul had gone through many challenges during his missionary travels. There is a list of some of them even recorded in his letter to the church at Corinth (2 Corinthians 11:23-33). Still, Paul continued to press on with a marvelous attitude and trust in God. One of the many places we glimpse his attitude is in his letter to the church at Philippi. Note what Paul wrote remembering he wrote it while a prisoner.
“(12) I want you to know, brothers, that WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME HAS REALLY SERVED TO ADVANCE THE GOSPEL, (13) so that IT HAS BECOME KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE IMPERIAL GUARD AND TO ALL THE REST THAT MY IMPRISONMENT IS FOR CHRIST [that my chains are in Christ (NKJV)]. (14) AND MOST OF THE BROTHERS, HAVING BECOME CONFIDENT IN THE LORD BY MY IMPRISONMENT [confident by my chains (NKJV)], ARE MUCH MORE BOLD TO SPEAK THE WORD WITHOUT FEAR.” (Philippians 1:12-14 ESV)
Did you hear Paul complaining? No! Did you hear him whine about his ministry being hampered? No! Paul focused with joy on the progress and possibilities that his imprisonment had actually brought about. Isn’t that a marvelous spirit?
In Paul’s letter to Timothy we read…
“(8) Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, (9) for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. BUT THE WORD OF GOD IS NOT BOUND [not chained (NJKV)]!” (2 Timothy 2:8-9 ESV)
Yes, you could CHAIN THE MAN, BUT NOT THE MESSAGE. Wherever Paul was, whatever his situation, he was an ambassador for Christ -- and others knew it! May we have the same spirit that compels us to not complain, but rather look for the good God can work out in whatever situation we find ourselves. He can do it! Let’s let Him!
Have a great day ALLOWING GOD TO DO HIS WORK THROUGH YOU!

Missing the thread for the veil?
Yesterday we noted 2 Corinthians 3:14-15 where Paul mentioned hearts being veiled when the Old Testament law was being read; hardened hearts that just could not SEE JESUS for Who He is. However, we also noted the encouragement that in Christ the veil is removed. Every time I read through the Old Testament my mind jumps to the clarity provided in the New Testament as to Jesus being the long awaited Messiah. In fact, the coming of Jesus is a thread that goes throughout the Scriptures. From Genesis to Revelation we have the resounding theme of the Messiah is coming, the Messiah has come, and the Messiah is coming again. If we read through the pages of the Old Testament without recognizing the plan of God from the very beginning to send His Son, those Scriptures have not been understood. But, if that is the case we would not be alone in not understanding the Law and the Prophets.
When Jesus was faced with those who would not accept Him for Who He is -- some who were even seeking to kill Him (John 5:18) -- He stated…
“(36) But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me. (37) And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, (38) and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. (39) YOU SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES because you think that in them you have eternal life; and IT IS THEY THAT BEAR WITNESS ABOUT ME, (40) YET YOU REFUSE TO COME TO ME THAT YOU MAY HAVE LIFE.” (John 5:36-40 ESV)
Paul rejoiced when that veil was removed. He could then clearly SEE JESUS in the Scriptures he had previously learned so well, but not fully understood. When trying to reach his Jewish brethren it was “both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets” that he used to help them see. Some were convinced while others were not. (Acts 28:23-24)
We have the privilege of being able to read both the Old Testament and New Testament Scriptures. Let us continue to read carefully so that we do not miss any of the glimpses they provide of our Lord. We need to continually fix our focus on Him as the “founder and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2a ESV) SEEING JESUS is the most important focus of our life. May we help others realize that as well.
Have a great day WITH EYES AND HEART CONTINUALLY OPEN TO JESUS!

Glory Degree!
Moving up in higher education, there are various degrees that can be earned: AA, AS, BA, BS, MA, PhD, etc. Many hours of schooling go into the attaining of these degrees. However, there are times when HONORARY degrees are given to someone because of the influence they have had on the lives of others or society at large.
Though much learning takes place within the walls of a classroom with the intent that the knowledge would be applied to life in the world, there is a sense in which we might view the world as a classroom. Out in it there is much that can be learned. Some have referred to having gotten their education in the school of “hard knocks”; meaning the hard experiences endured in their life have taught them many valuable lessons. Perhaps that kind of learning could be referred to as “on the job training” since as life is lived, lessons are learned through the personal experiences of trial and error. However, not all things have to be learned through trial and error. Possessing an openness to learn from the experiences of others can spare us from making the same mistakes others have made. And just as there are many schools of thought floating about, we need to consider from what sphere we are drawing our education. What are we allowing to have the most influence in our life?
Writing to the church at Corinth, Paul stated…
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE FROM ONE DEGREE OF GLORY TO ANOTHER. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV)
In contrast to those who in looking at the Law could not see Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:14-15) and therefore made the mistake of not accepting Him, it was through accepting Christ the veil was removed (2 Corinthians 3:16) in order to see and understand more clearly. In that knowledge was found an ongoing glorious transformation from “one degree of glory to another.” Are we focused on that “degree”; that of allowing ourselves to be transformed more and more into the glorious image of our Lord? Do we recognize the HONOR it is for the Lord to desire to share the glory of His image with us? Through humbly surrendering ourselves to Him for this transformation to take place is a way of us truly HONORING Him. May the progression of the degree continue.
Have a great day CONTINUING IN A STATE OF TRANSFORMATION INTO HIS LIKENESS!

Getting Educated!
The school year is rapidly drawing to a close. Students are cramming for finals and scrambling to complete work to be turned in for final grades. Another school year has provided opportunity for much to be learned. Hopefully Summer will be entered with having gained more knowledge than what was possessed last Fall.
Someone has defined education in the following way: “Education is learning what you didn’t even know you didn’t know.” [source: calendar quote] Is that descriptive of our own learning experience?
Peter and John were noted as being “uneducated, common men”. (Acts 4:13 ESV) However, they willingly accepted and followed Jesus when they were called. Jesus equipped them and the other disciples for the work of reaching out with the good news of salvation in Him. From the Lord we could say they received a HIGHER EDUCATION that prompted boldness in their ministry.
Paul, on the other hand, appears to have been the most educated of the Apostles. Nevertheless, where did that education get him? Though highly educated, what he did not know caused him to develop a zeal for persecuting the church. His education had seemingly taken him away from accepting the Lord. After Paul’s conversion and late in his ministry for the Lord -- when he was arrested in Jerusalem and began making a defense before his Jewish brethren -- before recounting his conversion to Christ he mentioned his earlier education.
He stated…
“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, EDUCATED AT THE FEET OF GAMALIEL ACCORDING TO THE STRICT MANNER OF THE LAW OF OUR FATHERS, being zealous for God as all of you are this day.” (Acts 22:3 ESV)
In his letter to the church at Galatia Paul stated…
“(13) For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. (14) And I WAS ADVANCING IN JUDAISM BEYOND MANY OF MY OWN AGE among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers.” (Galatians 1:13-14 ESV)
Wow! What progress! How educated Paul was among his peers! However, he still was in need of learning what he didn’t know he didn’t know! There was a HIGHER EDUCATION of which Paul had been in need and he received, being convicted of the truth that Jesus was the fulfillment of all that the Law and the prophets had declared.
Backing up two verses we read…
“(11) For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel. (12) For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I RECEIVED IT THROUGH A REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST.” (Galatians 1:11-12 ESV)
No matter how old we are, we should guard against becoming complacent with our knowledge, thinking we have gotten it all together. We may not know what we don’t know until we keep growing in our knowledge. The HIGHER EDUCATION we receive from the continual study of the Scriptures will serve to bring us to higher levels of faith and righteous living. If we claim to be disciples of Jesus, let us continue to be His students.
Have a great day IN HUMILITY KNOWING THERE IS YET MORE TO KNOW!
