Not Our Problem?
As we read of the nation of Israel going in and out of a relationship with God during the times of the kings, we might be amazed at how they could possibly turn their allegiance to some other god. However, many of the kings did and led the people astray into evil that was referred to as being even worse than that of the nations God had driven out and destroyed. (i.e. 2 Kings 21:9) Why was there so much difficulty remembering that God is God and that gods are nothing? When Saul and his sons were killed by the Philistines, the Philistines had to go and “carry the good news to their idols.” ( 1 Chronicles 10:9) Does news have to be reported to God? Then we see later on when David (after he became king) went out against the Philistines that as he began to strike them down these Philistines “left their gods” behind as they fled. ( 1 Chronicles 14:12) God can be turned from, but He doesn’t need to be carried around by us to remain with us. Other passages note the foolishness of idolatry as well. (read Isaiah 44:12-19)
So, we don’t have that problem, right? We understand the foolishness of worshiping an image crafted by man. We know there is no power to help us in objects of metal or wood. However, does God truly receive all of our worship? Is He truly OUR GOD AND THERE IS NO OTHER? Or is He sometimes left out of the picture as we turn to the world for advice and even at times believe we can make it on our own strength?
Writing to the church at Rome Paul stated…
“(33) Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (34) ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? (35) Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?’ (36) For FROM HIM and THROUGH HIM and TO HIM ARE ALL THINGS. To him be glory forever. Amen.” ( Romans 11:33-36 ESV)
Do the actions of our life truly say “Amen” to that? Does our life declare, “So be it!” or “Let it be so!”? Is the SOLE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD the reality for us every day of our life?
May our life help others around us recognize there is no deeper source of wealth, wisdom, or knowledge than God, the Creator of all life. He Who needs no counsel is the One from Whom we can receive the greatest counsel. We really need to be mindful of what our actions are truly saying with regard to who holds the NUMBER ONE position in our life. As we go in and out of the various activities of life may we do so without going in and out of GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY remaining over us.
Have a great day LETTING GOD REMAIN OUR GOD!
