Our Cup Of Tea!
Whenever I make myself a cup of tea, I like the water to be boiling. Having the tea bag sit in the boiling water for five minutes or more brings out plenty of the tea’s full flavor.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome he exhorted…
“Do NOT be SLOTHFUL IN ZEAL, be FERVENT IN SPIRIT, serve the Lord.” (Romans 12:11 ESV)
How could there even be such a thing as slothful (slow, sluggish, or lazy) zeal? Doesn’t zeal itself imply energy and enthusiasm? The contrast here is between slothful zeal and a fervent spirit. Other translations present the contrast as lagging diligence verses fervent in spirit (NKJV) or laziness verses enthusiastic service (NLT). The Greek implies shrinking or timid zeal or diligence. That is not to be characteristic of our zeal.
Perhaps you are wondering why I began mentioning the way I like my tea. Paul’s exhortation encouraged toward being “FERVENT IN SPIRIT” in serving the Lord. The Greek translated “fervent” is a word that means to be hot or boil. Our zeal for service is not to be cold or simmering, but BOILING HOT!
Remember the Lord’s rebuke of the church at Laodicea.
“(15) I know your works: YOU ARE NEITHER COLD NOR HOT. Would that you were either cold or hot! (16) So, BECAUSE YOU ARE LUKEWARM, and neither hot nor cold, I WILL SPIT YOU OUT OF MY MOUTH.” (Revelation 3:15-16 ESV)
Lukewarm or cold water does not make a good cup of tea. I want it boiling. And that is the kind of zeal and spirit God desires to see behind our service. May such zeal be precisely our cup of tea. In that way our service will be palatable to the Lord.
Have a great day LIVING A TASTEFUL LIFE OF SERVICE!

Listening?
In Psalm 85 -- a psalm that seeks restoration (vs.4) and revival (vs.6) from God -- David recounted times of restoration and forgiveness of the past. (vss.1-3) There had been many times God’s anger had been turned away from Israel. However, it is important to consider where our own life is turning. Perhaps that begins best by turning a listening ear to God.
David expressed his readiness to listen as he stated…
“(8) LET ME HEAR WHAT GOD THE LORD WILL SPEAK, FOR HE WILL SPEAK PEACE TO HIS PEOPLE, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. (9) SURELY HIS SALVATION IS NEAR TO THOSE WHO FEAR HIM, that glory may dwell in our land.” (Psalm 85:8-9 ESV)
When God speaks -- as we read His words recorded in Scripture -- do we listen with a sense of HUMILITY and GRATITUDE? Do we listen to His Words of warning and guidance so that we can also accept His words of peace? It takes HUMILITY to set our own desires and ideas aside in order to receive God’s Will. Then His words should be accepted in GRATITUDE for the wise direction we receive. Instead of turning again to the folly of the futile ways of the past that we have been ransomed from in Christ (note 1 Peter 1:18), we are to continue to turn our life toward Him and the salvation He brings near. May we continue to be eager to listen to what God’s word has to say so that we are enabled to walk on in faithfulness to Him.
Have a great day FINDING PEACE IN GOD’S WORD!

The Long And The Short Of It!
In Acts the 26th chapter we find Paul being held as a prisoner. As he was in the presence of the governor Felix he had already made an appeal to be brought before Caesar, in Rome. But on this particular day, Felix brought Paul out before King Agrippa (who was accompanied by his wife Bernice) giving him an opportunity to present his defense. Felix hoped Agrippa might be able to help come up with a written charge to be sent along with Paul to Rome.
As Paul stood before everyone assembled that day he related the experience of his conversion on the road to Damascus as well as the things that had occurred relating to Jesus Christ. Festus’ response to the message was that he believed Paul was out of his mind and that his learning was driving him insane. Paul denied being insane, pointing out that what he was saying was both true and reasonable. (Acts 26:24-25)
Note Paul’s statement then to Agrippa and the responses that followed.
“(25) But Paul said, ‘I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words. (26) For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner. (27) King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.’ (28) And Agrippa said to Paul, ‘In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?’ (29) And Paul said, ‘Whether SHORT OR LONG, I would to God that not only you but also all who hear me this day might become such as I am -- except for these chains.’” (Acts 26:25-29 ESV)
In trying to help others see what God wants them to do with their lives and persuade them by the influence of our life and words to accept His way -- THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT IS THIS: some people respond quicker than others. Keep praying for them. Keep giving them an example of what a true Christian is like. Keep mentioning in conversation what difference God is making in your life. Keep being consistent in what you believe and how you live your life. Hopefully the time will come sooner or later when their heart will finally yield to God’s will.
Have a great day DRAWING ATTENTION TO GOD’S WAY!

Memorial Day!
Today is marked on our calendar here in the United States of America as “Memorial Day.” This day -- which falls on the last Monday of May each year -- was set aside as a public holiday to commemorate soldiers who died in war. By their personal sacrifice, freedom was secured for the citizens of this nation and for people in other parts of the world. For some, however, the day is merely focused on as a day off from work to enjoy time with family and friends.
In Exodus we read of another “memorial day.”
“THIS DAY SHALL BE FOR YOU A MEMORIAL DAY, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.” (Exodus 12:14 ESV)
This was the first Passover focus, a designation that would be placed on the Jewish calendar as an annual REMEMBRANCE of the nation’s DELIVERANCE FROM BONDAGE in Egypt. Under the leadership of Moses, God led the nation of Israel out of slavery and toward a land He would give them. However, it was a focus not always kept (note 2 Kings 23:22) as faithfulness to God would from time to time go by the wayside.
We have another REMEMBRANCE today that the early church kept on the first day of the week. (i.e. Acts 20:7) It is a REMEMBRANCE our Lord Himself established. Paul recounted that establishment in his first letter to the church at Corinth.
We read…
“(23) For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, (24) and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.’ (25) In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. DO THIS, as often as you drink it, IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.’ (26) For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (I Corinthians 11:23-26 ESV)
The establishment of this REMEMBRANCE overshadowed the Passover memorial as Jesus had given Himself as our “Passover lamb”. (1 Corinthians 5:7) Is it forgotten? Is it only focused on once a year? Is that REMEMBRANCE only made when partaken of on Sundays. Or is the personal sacrifice of our Lord for our DELIVERANCE FROM THE BONDAGE OF SIN remembered every day of our life? According to Paul, this REMEMBRANCE is to be kept in mind while we remember another day that is coming. May we continually retain the REMEMBRANCE of our Lord’s personal sacrifice on our behalf as we live lives prepared for His glorious return and our deliverance into that eternal promised land.
Have a great day DAILY REMEMBERING CHRIST’S PERSONAL SACRIFICE FOR US!

Sharing Golden Apples!
Life presents lots of opportunities and various ways of sharing with others. And sharing is great, provided what we share is good and is accepted by the one with whom we are trying to share. Probably one of the most frequent ways we share is through words spoken. And we all have to admit that some words are not worth sharing.
Solomon wrote…
“A word FITLY SPOKEN is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” (Proverbs 25:11 ESV)
In other translations this word is described as “FITLY SPOKEN” (RSV), “TIMELY ADVICE” (New Living Translation), or “SPOKEN AT THE RIGHT MOMENT” (Modern Language).
What kind of word could this be?
-- an encouraging word!
-- a word of love!
-- a word of praise!
-- a compliment!
-- and even a correction or warning!
But did you note how some of the translations call attention to the TIMING of the word spoken? Not only do we need to give consideration to the words we use and the way we say them, but also to WHEN they are being spoken.
Solomon also pointed to this in another way when he stated…
“Whoever BLESSES his neighbor WITH A LOUD VOICE, rising EARLY IN THE MORNING, will be COUNTED AS CURSING.” (Proverbs 27:14 ESV)
Do you see how important the relationship is between the RIGHT WORD and the RIGHT TIME? May we keep in mind -- as we are sharing words with others -- the importance in using the RIGHT words at the RIGHT time, as well as speaking them in the RIGHT way, for Paul pointed to the need of also “speaking the truth IN LOVE” (Ephesians 4:15).
Have a great day SHARING APPLES OF GOLD IN SETTINGS OF SILVER!

The Future!
We may not know all that the future holds for us. However, what we do know can powerfully impact the manner in which we press on into it. What is it that provides us with the most assurance in the close relationships we have? Is it the recognition of a bond of love that can be counted on through good times as well as through the trying times? Sometimes just knowing those we love and who love us will be there with us through the uncertain periods of life can provide the courage needed to press on regardless of what might be faced.
When we recognize the great LOVE RELATIONSHIP we have with God, does that provide an immense assurance for the future even when we don’t know all the things in life we may encounter? When Paul referred to the love of Christ, he raised the question as to whether or not tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword could separate us from that love. (Romans 8:35) He then went on to assert that of which he was certain.
We read…
“(37) No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (38) FOR I AM SURE that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present NOR THINGS TO COME, nor powers, (39) nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.” (Romans 8:37-39 ESV)
No wonder Paul’s life was marked by a continual willingness to press on even in the face of the unknown. (note Acts 20:22-24; 21:11-14) He trusted the Lord to stand by him and that is exactly what he experienced. (2 Timothy 4:17)
Let us also be encouraged that as we press on in the Will of God that not even the “things to come” can separate us from the LOVE RELATIONSHIP we have with Him through Christ. Though we may not know all the “things to come”, whatever they may be, like Paul let us trust the Lord to stand by us through them.
Have a great day PRESSING ON INSEPARABLE FROM GOD!

Properly Placed Passion!
In recognizing people are passionate about a lot of things, does it sometimes amaze us where that passion is placed and how it is expressed? We may hear a lot of talk in this world about love and yet wonder at what appears to be a lack of it; at least in its genuineness. Do people not understand what it is TO LOVE? Is that why some can refer to loving others and loving chocolate cake with the same intensity? Can one have a relationship with chocolate cake? Perhaps some say they do. However, is it not with people that meaningful relationships can and are to be developed?
John exhorted…
“(15) DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD OR THE THINGS IN THE WORLD. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world -- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and PRIDE IN POSSESSIONS -- is not from the Father but is from the world.” (1 John 2:15-16 ESV)
Someone has stated, “We too often love things and use people, when we should be using things and loving people.” [original source unknown] Do we have it mixed up? Is OUR LOVE improperly directed? Do we love “the things” or rather love to use them in expressing our passion for the lives of others?
John went out to state…
“(17) But if anyone HAS THE WORLD’S GOODS and SEES HIS BROTHER IN NEED, yet CLOSES HIS HEART AGAINST HIM, HOW DOES GOD’S LOVE ABIDE IN HIM? (18) Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:17-18 ESV)
What we possess can and should be used as an expression of OUR LOVE for others. Things are meant to be used, not people. People are meant to be loved. If anyone is going to be used, let it be us by God to demonstrate to the world what love is truly all about. And why should we love in such a way? Because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) Therefore, as the passion of Christ was for the souls of others may we share His passion as we interact with those around us.
Have a great day PROPERLY PLACING PEOPLE ABOVE POSSESSIONS!

Subject Or Suspect!
Two ways in which law enforcement may refer to specific individuals they encounter is either as a “subject” or a “suspect.” A “subject” could be a person who made a call for assistance or who the officer comes upon and merely wants to talk with to find out what is going on with them. A “suspect” is an individual already suspected of a crime and is sought out for questioning to determine if there is ENOUGH EVIDENCE for taking into custody and leading to a conviction.
As Christians, do we live as a “subject” others might notice and desire to find out what is going on in our life? Or is there something about our life that causes us to be “suspect” in the eyes of others? If people in fact “suspect” us of being a Christian, would there be found ENOUGH EVIDENCE to prove it to be true?
Peter exhorted those to whom he wrote…
“(15) But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. (16) Yet IF ANYONE SUFFERS AS A CHRISTIAN, let him not be ashamed, but LET HIM GLORIFY GOD IN THAT NAME.” (1 Peter 4:15-16 ESV)
Let us live as a “subject” worth finding out about and a “suspect” that can truly be convicted by the overwhelming EVIDENCE of possessing a genuine Christian spirit. May we live in a way to remove any doubt regarding our true identity with Christ and so being charged as a Christian the conviction will stick!
Have a great day LIVING AS A CONVICTED CHRISTIAN!

Get Up And Walk!
The world says, “You made your bed, now lie in it.” Jesus is the One Who said, “Take up your bed and walk.” (John 5:8) Whose statement have we chosen to accept?
We may have chosen the specific place in life where our bed was made. We may have chosen how we made it up. We may have put every nail in it ourselves. The good news is that we don’t have to remain there. We may continue to bear some of the marks of the bed we have lain in, carrying some of those signs around with us as we WALK ON in life. However, in Christ is found the opportunity to MOVE ON. We do not have to remain where we are or where we have been.
Remember the woman brought before Jesus who had been caught in the act of adultery. (John 8:3) She had chosen her bed. There were those eager to condemn her for her sin as they were also seeking to use the opportunity to test Jesus. (John 8:5-6). However, Jesus directed her ONWARD IN LIFE when He said…
“…‘Neither do I condemn you; GO, AND FROM NOW ON SIN NO MORE.’” (John 8:11 ESV)
Though Jesus did not condemn her, neither did He condone her actions. He directed her to WALK ON from them. The sin was to be left behind. She did not have to remain there.
The paralytic lowered down in front of Jesus through the roof of a house where Jesus was teaching was first told, “Your sins are forgiven.” (Mark 2:5) Such a statement caused some to think within themselves that Jesus was blaspheming, considering that only God can forgive sins (Mark 2:6-7).
Jesus responded…
“(9) ‘Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN,’ or to say, ‘RISE, TAKE UP YOUR BED AND WALK’? (10) But that you may know that THE SON OF MAN HAS AUTHORITY ON EARTH TO FORGIVE SINS” -- he said to the paralytic -- (11) ‘I say to you, rise, PICK UP YOUR BED, AND GO HOME.’ (12) And he rose and IMMEDIATELY PICKED UP HIS BED AND WENT OUT before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, ‘We never saw anything like this!’” (Mark 2:9-12 ESV)
We come into contact with people who may be lying in the very bed they made. They may be bearing the marks of the poor choices that were their own. Do we turn our back on them, viewing them as hopeless or do we encourage them that they do not have to remain where they are as we direct them to Jesus, the One Who can forgive the sin that once bound them? Jesus did not turn His back on the woman caught in the act of adultery. Nor did He turn His back on the woman He met at the well who had had five husbands and the man with whom she was living at the time was not her husband. (John 4:16-18) Jesus took the opportunity to lift their focus to the hope they could WALK ON in.
I encountered such a young woman this week. We talked specifically about the things that brought her to where she is today. But we also talked about the choices of today and MOVING ON making the right choices. She will unfortunately continue to bear some of the marks of the bed she has lain in, but she seemed to be ready to make the choice to stay out of that bed and MOVE FORWARD. I pray that that encounter will not be my last with her and that she will continue to make the right choices and maintain the right connections that will keep her WALKING ON the right path.
Jesus has the power to say “YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN” and also “TAKE UP YOUR BED AND WALK!” May His power and authority encourage us to WALK ON in the truth of His Way. Let us also encourage others that this good news is for them as well.
Have a great day CONTINUING THE FORWARD MOTION IN CHRIST!

A Hand Full!
A hand full! Sometimes a child is referred to as being a “hand full” and what is usually meant is the child is a challenge to handle. Perhaps it takes two hands and constant vigilence to corral and guide the energy in a productive direction.
A hand full! When it comes to sharing things, one person might share by picking up with their fingers while another scoops up a “hand full” to offer. The latter person may be considered to be the most generous. Then there are also individuals whose “hand full” would be larger than others simply due to the size of their hands.
Prior to David’s death, he began amassing from his own treasury personal gifts to be used in building the temple under the leadership of his son Solomon. In mentioning his own giving, David encouraged the rest of the nation toward the same kind of willingness in giving GENEROUSLY. After all, everything they had to give had come from the Lord anyway. (1 Chronicles 29:14)
As David referred to some of the specific gifts he had set aside we read…
“(3) Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God: (4) 3,000 talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the house, (5) and for all the work to be done by craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver for the things of silver. WHO THEN WILL OFFER WILLINGLY, CONSECRATING HIMSELF TODAY TO THE LORD?” (1 Chronicles 29:3-5 ESV)
It wasn’t forced giving, but a GENEROUS willingness David was seeking to encourage. He urged others to voluntarily follow his example, having not asked anything of others he was not willing to do himself. However, there is an interesting expression in verse five. The Hebrew translated “consecrating” literally refers to “filling his hand” to the Lord. The GENEROSITY being encouraged was not merely picking something up with the fingers, but rather the offering of a “hand full”.
Being consecrated in Christ our lives have been dedicated to God -- belonging to Him (1 Peter 2:9) -- and therefore we should view ourselves as being set apart for His use. (2 Timothy 2:21) Our lives being consecrated in service to the glory of God, we should recognize there is plenty with which to fill our hands in doing and giving. There is to be a liberalness marking the giving of ourselves in service for God’s divine and holy purposes. Such living is an expression of gratitude for the energy and strength for labor that has come from Him and the acknowledgement that we are merely stewards of what we possess. May we be ever willing to GENEROUSLY fill our hands to the Lord, using all we have to His glory.
Have a great day LIVING TO THE LORD IN LIBERAL USEFULNESS!

Looking Up To Youth!
Paul wrote to encourage a lot of Christians including the YOUNG evangelist, Timothy. Though Timothy was not a teenager, some of the encouragement he received from Paul is appropriate for teens as well as those of us who are older.
Paul encouraged Timothy…
“Let no one despise you for your youth, but SET THE BELIEVERS AN EXAMPLE in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12 ESV)
Adults SHOULD be good examples for youth to follow. However, that is sadly not always the case. On the other hand, adults can also LEARN FROM YOUTH.
You who are teenagers are to be valued! You are important! You have something to offer which can benefit even adults! Sometimes youth are referred to as the “church of tomorrow”. Now, it is true that you (hopefully) will be a part of the future of the church. However, you are A VITAL PART of the church TODAY -- RIGHT NOW! You do have something to offer. And your life can be a POWERFUL EXAMPLE for your peers, your family and the church. Your youthful energy, excitement, and creativity can be a powerful tool used by God to reach out to others and influence their lives. In the midst of all the ungodly things of the world, your godly example can give direction not only for your peers, but also to the adult world when others see what wonderful things a right focus on God brings to your life.
Let your life be one that is not looked down on because you are young, but one that is looked up to -- even by the adults around you. Be a godly example in your speech, in the way you live your daily life, in the way you love, in your faith in God and in your purity of life. You are a precious part of our family life in the church.
May you BE USED TODAY POWERFULLY TO THE GLORY OF GOD!

Ouch! I Needed That!
FEELING PAIN! Who wants it? But who could live without it? You say you could? I say you can’t! Though we don’t like to feel pain, imagine if we were incapable of it? We would touch something hot and not realize it before being badly burned. We would touch something sharp and cut ourselves before it was realized. The pain that is felt causes us to react to the situation. Though the pain is not comfortable, being able to feel it is important. The pain brings something important into focus: the need to stop, the need to withdraw, the need to jump back, the need to give attention, etc. The same is true regarding our spiritual life. For the God trained conscience the pain of guilt tells us something is wrong and gives us the opportunity to make changes or turn away from the inappropriate behavior or direction in life.
Paul had written a letter to the church in Corinth that caused them some pain. Note what Paul said that feeling resulted in…
“(8) For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it -- though I did regret it, for I SEE THAT THAT LETTER GRIEVED YOU, though only for a while. (9) As it is, I REJOICE, not because you were grieved, but BECAUSE YOU WERE GRIEVED INTO REPENTING. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. (10) For GODLY GRIEF PRODUCES A REPENTANCE THAT LEADS TO SALVATION without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-10 ESV)
Worldly grief (or sorrow, NKJV) may be: “I’m sorry I got caught, but not really for what I did.” Godly grief (or sorrow, NKJV) leaves one in a position to praise God the needed change was recognized so the proper changes could be made. With repentance comes forgiveness and thus no regret.
Thank God for the ability for PAIN’S TWINGE TO ALERT US and steer us in a safe direction. Yes, we are truly “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).
Have a great day RESPONDING TO GOD’S WILL!

Arm Twisting?
Sometimes my wife will offer something to me (such as a desert or treat of some kind) and I will respond “Oh, oh, oh, okay” while I am pushing my arm up behind my back to imitate having my arm twisted to force me to do something. Certainly good food doesn’t have to be forced upon me. I don’t need my arm twisted to get me to eat. That’s why I had to work at losing some weight a few years ago. However, there are times when it does take some arm twisting to get someone to do something. That arm twisting may not be physical, but still just as forceful in pressuring through intimidation, playing on the emotions, making another feel guilty if they don’t, wearing them down through asking and asking and asking (note the example in Luke 18:4-5), or by some other means that finally gets another to comply. When Jesus told the parable of the persistent widow making her request to the “unrighteous judge” (ESV), He capped it off with a statement regarding God’s willingness to grant justice and then stated…
“…Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8b ESV)
FAITH! FAITH in requests to God with regard to our life. Is it about twisting the arm of God? Is it about pushing His buttons in a certain way to get what we want? Is it about wearing Him down through incessant pleading and throwing a tantrum like a three-year-old until He gives in to us? Someone has stated that “Faith is not twisting God’s arm to give us what we want, but it’s bending our will to do what God wants.” [original source unknown]
Isn’t that what Jesus exemplified? Remember what marked His prayer in the garden prior to His arrest and crucifixion.
“And he said, ‘Abba, Father, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE FOR YOU. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, BUT WHAT YOU WILL.’” (Mark 14:36 ESV)
Jesus was heard, but not spared. (Hebrews 5:7) Jesus prayed and He accepted. He had a Will, but it took second place to the Will of the Father.
Peter noted our Lord’s trust in the following way.
“When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but CONTINUED ENTRUSTING HIMSELF TO HIM WHO JUDGES JUSTLY.” (1 Peter 2:23 ESV)
FAITH! Do we focus our FAITH on seeking and accepting God’s will to be done? Though we talk about His great wisdom are we content to let our own will take second place to His? FAITH is trusting in the FAITHFULNESS OF GOD -- “who judges justly” and has the ability to do “all things” -- to do what is truly best for us. May we be willing to continually bend our will to fully accept and do what it is God desires.
Have a great day TRUSTING THE FAITHFUL ARM OF GOD!

The Place!
As Jesus’ earthly ministry progressed there were many even among the rulers of the people who believed in Him, but they would not confess that belief openly for fear of the Pharisees putting them out of the synagogue. (John 12:42) The did not want to LOSE THEIR PLACE. Following the raising of Lazarus from the dead we read of many who began to believe in Jesus. (John 11:45) This caused the Jewish leaders to fear that if things continued in that direction, the Romans would come in and “take away both our place and our nation.” (John 11:48 ESV) They did not want to LOSE THEIR PLACE.
The thing each of these groups needed to acknowledge was that in failing to accept Jesus fully they were already LOSING THE PLACE that would have brought them blessing. They needed to LOSE THEIR PLACE in order to occupy the place God had in mind.
There are places we should not want to occupy. The rich man was in a place to which he did not want to see his brothers come. (Luke 16:27-28) There are also rightful places that can be lost. Jude referred to angels who having “left their proper dwelling” -- not staying within their own position -- were being held for judgment. (Jude 6) They LOST THEIR PLACE that should have been retained.
We need to live with an awareness not of choosing of our own place, but of accepting the place God desires to place us. It is in arrogance some have chosen their own place, thus placing themselves in a position to lose out on the blessing God desires to bring. As Jesus noted the attitude of some who loved the place of notoriety, He told a parable.
We read…
“(7) Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when HE NOTICED HOW THEY CHOSE THE PLACES OF HONOR, saying to them, (8) ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, (9) and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. (10) But when you are invited, go and SIT IN THE LOWEST PLACE, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘FRIEND, MOVE UP HIGHER.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. (11) For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and HE WHO HUMBLES HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED.’” (Luke 14:7-11 ESV)
Let us guard against assuming the place we want, but in humility surrender self to God so that He can move us into the place He desires. It is not self-exaltation, but God exaltation we should seek to receive. God knows best the timing and manner in which to establish us where He wants us. The place we need to seek is where God desires to use us for His purposes. May we not allow our own intent and purposes to get in the way so as to LOSE THE PLACE He desires for us. Let us understand what it means to LOSE SELF so that God can do the exalting to the HIGHEST PLACE in Christ! (Ephesians 2:6)
Have a great day ENJOYING OUR RIGHTFUL PLACE WITH JESUS!

Ready To Help!
If you have shopped at a Wal-mart® store you have probably noticed the employees wearing either a blue or red vest with large print on the back reading: “How May I Help You?” The bright color of the vests serves to produce high visibility of the store employees so that when help is needed they can be found.
Though we don’t go through life wearing such vests (however, it might not be a bad idea), we do need to be mindful of what it is our life says. Do our actions reveal a WILLINGESS to help? Is our life marked by an EAGERNESS to respond when others need assistance? Perhaps there are three statements that should be on our hearts, ready to be spoken depending on what might be needed at the moment. [I had been pondering the first two and shared them recently during a Sunday evening Bible discussion. The third was suggested by one of the women of our congregation.]
1. “I can help you with that.”
2. “I know someone who can help you with that.”
3. “I don’t know. Let’s see if we can find someone to help you with that.”
Each of these three conveys a WILLINGNESS to make certain the other receives whatever help might be needed. Even when we cannot provide it ourselves, rather than saying “sorry” and moving on, we can convey genuine loving interest by our WILLINGNESS to help connect them with someone who can.
Peter exhorted…
“(10) As EACH HAS RECEIVED A GIFT, USE IT TO SERVE ONE ANOTHER, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: (11) whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who SERVES BY THE STRENGTH THAT GOD SUPPLIES -- in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 ESV)
And Paul urged…
“(13) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but THROUGH LOVE SERVE ONE ANOTHER.” (Galatians 5:13 ESV)
Are we EAGERLY WILLING TO SERVE others. Paul noted Timothy as an example of one who had “genuine concern” (Philippians 2:20) for the welfare of those at Philippi. Possessing a heart that is genuinely touched by the needs of others is part of the essence of being Christ-like. Let us live so that such becomes the “trademark” of our life!
Incidentally, as I tried to remember the exact wording on the back of the Wal-mart® vests, I called one of their stores to make sure I had it right. The employee had to go look for one because she said they were doing away with the vests, changing to some different attire. Let us never do away with our WILLINGNESS TO SERVE others. May it be a part of our daily attire.
Have a great day TAKING A VESTED INTEREST IN OTHERS!

Not Our Problem?
As we read of the nation of Israel going in and out of a relationship with God during the times of the kings, we might be amazed at how they could possibly turn their allegiance to some other god. However, many of the kings did and led the people astray into evil that was referred to as being even worse than that of the nations God had driven out and destroyed. (i.e. 2 Kings 21:9) Why was there so much difficulty remembering that God is God and that gods are nothing? When Saul and his sons were killed by the Philistines, the Philistines had to go and “carry the good news to their idols.” (1 Chronicles 10:9) Does news have to be reported to God? Then we see later on when David (after he became king) went out against the Philistines that as he began to strike them down these Philistines “left their gods” behind as they fled. (1 Chronicles 14:12) God can be turned from, but He doesn’t need to be carried around by us to remain with us. Other passages note the foolishness of idolatry as well. (read Isaiah 44:12-19)
So, we don’t have that problem, right? We understand the foolishness of worshiping an image crafted by man. We know there is no power to help us in objects of metal or wood. However, does God truly receive all of our worship? Is He truly OUR GOD AND THERE IS NO OTHER? Or is He sometimes left out of the picture as we turn to the world for advice and even at times believe we can make it on our own strength?
Writing to the church at Rome Paul stated…
“(33) Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (34) ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? (35) Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?’ (36) For FROM HIM and THROUGH HIM and TO HIM ARE ALL THINGS. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36 ESV)
Do the actions of our life truly say “Amen” to that? Does our life declare, “So be it!” or “Let it be so!”? Is the SOLE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD the reality for us every day of our life?
May our life help others around us recognize there is no deeper source of wealth, wisdom, or knowledge than God, the Creator of all life. He Who needs no counsel is the One from Whom we can receive the greatest counsel. We really need to be mindful of what our actions are truly saying with regard to who holds the NUMBER ONE position in our life. As we go in and out of the various activities of life may we do so without going in and out of GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY remaining over us.
Have a great day LETTING GOD REMAIN OUR GOD!

Comfort!
When we read the assurances and promises of God we gain encouragement and hope to press on even in the face of trials. Though we may at times experience the discomfort of opposition to the truth we can still find peace in knowing we are right with God. That COMFORT helps us to hang in there through the challenges as we settle into the COMFORT of a trusting relationship with Him. Even when we come face to face with signs of the limitations of the flesh and our mortality we can rejoice in the consolation that this life is not all there is to our existence. To receive such COMFORT is a personal blessing we ought to greatly appreciate. However, the COMFORT we receive from God is not merely for the purpose of making us comfortable, but is also to inspire us in reaching out to others.
Paul stated…
“(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, (4) WHO COMFORTS US in all our affliction, SO THAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO COMFORT THOSE WHO ARE IN ANY AFFLICTION, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4 ESV)
Having experienced the COMFORT of God and knowing what it means to us should compel us to help others experience it as well. And it is the COMFORT of God that we ultimately need to turn others toward, because it is in His hands (John 10:27-29) that we can continue to feel secure.
Have a great day BEING A COMFORTED COMFORTER!

Crazy?
A boy who gets up at six a.m. to do a paper route to “better himself” is said to be a “go-getter.” However, should the church ask this boy to get up at six a.m. to do some work for the Lord, the same people might claim that is expecting too much of a boy. A woman who spends eight hours away from home to work in a factory or office might be referred to as being helpful and energetic, while if she were doing the same for the Lord the same people might say that her religion has gone to her head. An individual who spends twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty dollars or more on some weekly recreation for personal enjoyment might be noted as deserving it since they work so hard, while being thought to be crazy to place the same in the collection plate for the work of the church. [borrowed and adapted]
Not everyone ranks the importance of things the same. Perhaps there are times we find ourselves struggling with the right PRIORITIZING of what we do. Though everyone around us may not agree and will sometimes be critical, does the way we spend our time, energy, and money reflect DEVOTION TO THE LORD? Certainly this life has its demands and needs. Jesus noted the heavenly Father is well aware of this. (Matthew 6:32)
Jesus went on to urge…
“But SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV)
For the glory of the Lord, let us be a “go-getter” regardless of time of day. Also, on behalf of others, may our religion go the heart so that a willingness to expend energy for labors and service in the Name of Jesus will follow. And what we are willing to spend in the world, let us be just as cheerful in doing so for the sake of the Lord’s work. May it become clear to others that our true PRIORITIES are linked to our DEVOTION TO HIM!
Have a great day PUTTING FIRST THINGS FIRST!

Believing Expectantly!
Today is celebrated as “Mother’s Day!” There is so much that can be said about mothers and the special role they play in the lives of their children even after they are grown. The things their children experience are experienced by her as well. The joys, the sorrows, and every other emotion in between. When a mother is with child she is referred to as being “expectant.” Another word that has been suggested is “infanticipating” because of the great ANTICIPATION of an infant coming into this world. Even through the months of discomfort there is a willingness to endure because of the JOYFUL ANTICIPATION of a baby being born who will be tenderly cradled in their arms. (note John 16:21) And oh the imaginings that go on within a mother’s mind of all the possibilities that may come to be for that child. I believe there are some experiences that only a mother truly understands.
Prior to the coming of Jesus into this realm as an infant, there was great ANTICIPATION regarding the coming Messiah. Among those living expectant of the day was a righteous and devout man named Simeon to whom it had been revealed “that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” (Luke 2:25-26) When Jesus was taken to the temple in accordance with the law, Simeon took Jesus in his arms and His parents marveled at what was said about Him.
We read…
“(29) Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; (30) FOR MY EYES HAVE SEEN YOUR SALVATION (31) that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, (32) a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32 ESV)
Though salvation through the Messiah was but in its infancy, Simeon believed expectantly that it was so. He didn’t have to see the miracles, hear the teachings, view the cross, peer into the empty tomb, or watch the Lord’s ascension back to Heaven. All Simeon needed was to see the infant Jesus to recognize that the salvation he had been ANTICIPATING had now come into the world.
Believing expectantly! As we read the promises of God is this the way we are living our life? Are we trusting Him to bring about all that He has promised even as we endure the challenges of this realm? Like Simeon, may we see the reality of it all through the eye of faith as we live each day in JOYFUL ANTICIPATION of all the glories of eternity that are yet to come.
Have a great day KNOWING ALL GOD’S PROMISES ARE PREGNANT WITH THE ASSURANCE OF HOPE!

The Same Spirit!
Though Israel (before the coming of Christ and the establishment of His kingdom) lived under a different law than we as Christians do today, the spirit of God’s commands and the intent He had in mind for the way in which life was to be lived has not really changed. Even with the command of circumcision as a sign of being God’s people, there was still the desire for it to be more than a physical symbol of that relationship; God desired for there to be circumcision of THE HEART. (Deuteronomy 10:16 & 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4; Roman 2:28-29)
God’s expectation has always been for His commands to be obeyed -- not so much with a desire for rigid robotic obedience -- but as a willing response to the God Who had lovingly provided blessing after blessing. The commands and guidelines God provided were to be taken seriously, but with the desire for HEART INVOLVEMENT!
As we think about the Giver of all good things, consider for a moment the spirit of giving God desired. God made the command of tithing very clear. (Deuteronomy 14:22-29) This tithing of a tenth (Leviticus 27:32) was God’s way of reminding the nation of Israel of their blessings from him, produce trust with regard to His continued provision, and provide the support needed for the priesthood (Numbers 18:21) and others as well. (Deuteronomy 14:29) Though the giving of a tenth may be viewed as a good beginning point in planning our giving today, the New Testament does not require it of us. Within our freedom in Christ the New Testament places a lot of emphasis on our attitude in giving in a way that should compel rich generosity. Even our Lord focused the attention on the attitude behind the giving. (Matthew 6:1-4)
As Paul encouraged the Corinthians with regard to a collection to meet the needs of those in Judea, we read…
“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, AS HE MAY PROSPER, so that there will be no collecting when I come.” (1 Corinthians 16:2 ESV)
“For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable ACCORDING TO WHAT A PERSON HAS, not according to what he does not have.” (2 Corinthians 8:12 ESV)
“Each one must give as he has made up his mind, NOT RELUCTANTLY OR UNDER COMPULSION, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV)
Each of these passages is used to support the manner in which we give today. But is that spirit new? Are these principles only found associated with giving in the New Testament?
Note the following comparison from Deuteronomy with regard to meeting the needs of others.
“(10) You shall GIVE to him FREELY, and your heart shall NOT be GRUDGING when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.” (Deuteronomy 15:10 ESV)
…and…
“(14) You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress. AS THE LORD YOUR GOD HAS BLESSED YOU, you shall give to him.” (Deuteronomy 15:14 ESV)
Even at the time of Moses the spirit of the giving was to also be done “as the Lord your God has blessed you” (as one had been prospered) and ungrudgingly (not reluctantly or under compulsion) just like Paul’s exhortation. In our giving and our living may it all be prompted by a HEART that acknowledges how richly we have been blessed in our relationship to God.
Have a great day KNOWING THE CHEER OF GIVING!

Journeying With Whom?
Lost in THE CROWD. Such can be a scary thing for a small child who in search of his parents can only view a sea of knees. However, as people grow older it seems there are many who don’t mind getting lost in THE CROWD. Rather than bucking the flow they settle in to the ease of going with it. If it is considered to be the “in” CROWD, that’s where they want to be found. Also, being numbered among the crowd it is possible to share the notoriety of particular accomplishments without having to really do much themselves. (Perhaps that is why some individuals prefer being in a large congregation rather than a small one where they might be called upon to serve.) The grave reality is that choosing to be lost in THE CROWD can very well become exactly that; LOST! As we consider those with whom we have chosen to walk in life, have we given serious consideration to the path they are traveling?
Jesus urged…
“(13) ENTER BY THE NARROW GATE. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. (14) For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matt 7:13-14 ESV)
The way in which the “many” are traveling is the way that leads to destruction. It is the path of the lost! It is a way that is CROWDED. It is a road to be avoided!
In Revelation we read of ANOTHER CROWD to which we should live to join.
“(9) After this I looked, and behold, A GREAT MULTITUDE that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, (10) and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’ (11) And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, (12) saying, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.’” (Revelation 7:9-12)
Who were these that made up this CROWD? They are described as those who had come out of the great tribulation and had washed their robes, making them white in the blood of the lamb. (Revelation 7:14) The cleansed! The redeemed! The saved! That is THE CROWD of which to be a part. May we enter the narrow gate and remain in the way that leads to life!
Have a great day PREPARING TO BE IN OUR LORD’S “IN” CROWD!

Channeling The Energy!
[05/10/2007 “teEn-MAIL”]
CHANNELING THE ENGERGY!
A week ago as I was walking, an individual I frequently meet asked me if I was one of those people who didn’t mow their lawn. I responded that I do as we both continued our separate directions. However, as I encountered him again this week and I slowed for a little more conversation, it became clear what he had meant by his question. This time he asked me if I was going to mow my lawn and I responded that I was planning on doing so when I got home from my walk. He stated that he had kids who did what I did (get out regularly to exercise), but they didn’t help out with mowing the grass. I remarked he needed to help them channel the energy into something USEFUL!
Someone has expressed, “Ever notice how quickly kids learn to drive a car, yet cannot understand the lawn mower, snow blower, or vacuum cleaner?” [source: calendar quote] It is possible to expend a lot of energy in things that vary greatly in benefit they provide. Physical exercise is good for the body and the mind. Even Paul acknowledge physical exercise has some value though he did point to the benefit of godliness for all things. (1 Timothy 4:8) When we consider the energy we expend doing various things, are we channeling some of it into the things of GREATEST VALUE? How much energy is being utilized for helping others and in serving the purposes of God?
In his letter to the church at Colossae Paul wrote…
“(28) Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. (29) FOR THIS I TOIL, STRUGGLING WITH ALL HIS ENERGY THAT HE POWERFULLY WORKS WITHIN ME.” (Colossians 1:28-29 ESV)
Looking at the life of Paul we see an energized person. However, it was not just His energy, but the power of God He had tapped into. As he focused on his ministry in Christ he was very much willing to spend and be spent (2 Corinthians 12:15) on behalf of others. Sometimes the challenge with children is to help channel the seemingly endless energy they possess. As children of God may we be mindful of our energy being channeled in USEFUL and God glorifying ways.
Have a great day LIVING USEFUL TO THE LORD!

Polite Acknowledgment!
It is far too easy to know others for so long that we begin to take them for granted. Simple politeness begins to fade away and the silence of verbal appreciation becomes deafening. The words “please” and “THANK YOU” begin to disappear from the daily vocabulary only to be replaced by grumbling when others don’t do what has now become to be the expected.
Let me suggest a little experiment for you in your home to see where you are personally in this regard. How often do you say “THANK YOU” when another member of your family does something as simple as opening a door, handing you some silverware, taking out the trash, etc.? Does it hurt to say “THANK YOU” for even the simple deed others perform? Doesn’t the verbalized “THANK YOU” tend to encourage its continuance by acknowledging it is noticed and appreciated?
My wife does the majority of the cooking and has for years. She still appreciates hearing me say “THANK YOU.” I generally take out the garbage and my wife frequently says, “THANK YOU.” Sometimes when I return to the kitchen to place a new bag in the bucket under the kitchen sink I find her already replacing it and I say “THANK YOU.” Though we have been married for many years we each know even the fulfillment of little tasks are appreciated.
Now consider your prayers as well. Have you taken God’s awareness of your life and His blessings for granted? Do you pray for guidance and then not THANK HIM for it? How much of your prayer time is filled with petitions (requests) compared to THANKS?
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae he exhorted…
“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, GIVING THANKS TO GOD THE FATHER THROUGH HIM.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
And to the church at Thessalonica He urged…
“(16) Rejoice always, (17) pray without ceasing, (18) GIVE THANKS IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV)
Both the manner in which we live and the verbalized “THANK YOU” reveal our continual awareness of God and our appreciation for all the ways in which He has and will bless our life. May we take none of His blessings for granted. It is the THANKFUL heart that aids in keeping the relationship close.
Have a great day LIVING WITH A GRATITUDE ATTITUDE!

A Happy Ending!
There was a Dad who promised to buy his boy a puppy. As they looked over the ones for sale at a dog kennel the Dad asked his son which one he wanted. The boy pointed to a puppy that was constantly wagging its tail, and said, “I want the one with a happy ending.”
Some people hunt for religion or a life focus like they would shop for a puppy. Their choice is in accordance with a face they like, or with regard to the way it runs, the tricks it can do, the symbol of prestige that might go with it, etc. However, what about THE END. Oh, it might provide some pleasure for the present, but what is the reality associated with ETERNITY? There must be more than a view for merely this life (note 1 Corinthians 15:19) because this is not all there is to our existence. What some are settling for may be nothing more than a dog’s life -- enjoying being scratched behind the ears -- while what is needed is to find the life God (which happens to be dog spelled backwards) desires to provide.
Paul noted in his letter to the church at Rome…
“(20) When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. (21) But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. (22) But now that you have been set free from sin and HAVE BECOME SLAVES OF GOD, the fruit you get leads to sanctification AND ITS END, ETERNAL LIFE.” (Romans 6:20-22 ESV)
It is not a dog’s life, but God’s life we have been given the opportunity to live. Remaining on His “leash” and enjoying life within the boundaries He has set is where we will find the greatest blessing and hope. Only through our surrender to God in Christ can we find the life with a truly happy ending; one that goes on and on into ETERNITY! May that be the choice we have made. We could find no better Master than Him!
Have a great day BEING GOD’S BEST FRIEND!

In The Spotlight!
“YOU THE MAN!” Is that statement intended to note someone as being macho! They showed their stuff. They displayed what they could do. And perhaps the response is sometimes, “YA, I’M THE MAN!” Attention was received. Notoriety was enjoyed. Ego was built up to a point of almost exploding. Are they THE MAN?
People can do many things that bring the spotlight into their lives whether that is intended or not. Honoring people for accomplishments can encourage even greater accomplishments. However, when the focus remains too much on self there are problems that can arise. This is no more true than in the realm of spiritual things. Yes, it is a good thing for the evidence of salt and light to be seen in our life, but even that is to be done to ultimately bring glory to God. (Matthew 5:13-16)
While Paul and Barnabas were preaching the Good News of Jesus in Lystra, Paul healed a man who had been crippled from birth. (Acts 14:8-10) To say the crowd was impressed would be an understatement. They were in awe. They were so focused on Paul and Barnabas that they gave them the names of Greek gods; calling Paul Hermes because he was the chief speaker and Barnabas Zeus. (Acts 14:12) Then the priest of Zeus even began preparing a sacrifice with the crowds.
Note the response of Barnabas and Paul.
“(14) But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, (15) ‘Men, why are you doing these things? WE ALSO ARE MEN, of like nature with you, and WE BRING YOU GOOD NEWS, that you should TURN FROM THESE VAIN THINGS TO A LIVING GOD, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.’” (Acts 14:14-15 ESV)
In Luke’s record of Acts he noted how even with these words it was difficult to keep the people from sacrificing to them. (Acts 14:18) Neither Barnabas nor Paul saw themselves as “THE MAN” to be exalted. They were merely the messengers!
Who is THE MAN to gain the attention? Referring to a contrast between Adam and Jesus, Paul wrote…
“(15) But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by THE GRACE OF THAT ONE MAN JESUS CHRIST abounded for many. (16) And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. (17) If, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the ABUNDANCE OF GRACE and the FREE GIFT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS reign in life THROUGH THE ONE MAN JESUS CHRIST.” (Romans 5:15-17 ESV)
JESUS CHRIST is THE MAN and more so the Son of God Who needs to be acknowledged and accepted by all. Let us focus our aim on being the messenger as we point the attention of others to THE MAN JESUS CHRIST. The attention must be focused away from us to Him because…
“(5) For there is ONE GOD, and there is ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS, (6) who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6 ESV)
As great and God glorifying as our works might be, may we continually strive to lift the focus higher than ourselves. Jesus came in the flesh and has shown His stuff! He has revealed what He can do! He can be trusted to the end. May all eyes be fixed upon Him!
Have a great day LIVING TO HELP OTHERS SEE JESUS!

Assembling For What?
Crowds may form for all kinds of reasons: a building on fire, a car crash at an intersection, a public demonstration, etc. Sometimes people are just drawn to a crowd by curiosity. However, it is possible for people to become involved with a crowd without actually knowing why they are really there. Every time I read of Paul’s visit to Ephesus and those stirred up by Demetrius (the silversmith) and all the commotion of the crowd I am struck by the description of the chaos.
We read…
“Now some cried out one thing, some another, for THE ASSEMBLY WAS IN CONFUSION, and MOST OF THEM DID NOT KNOW WHY THEY HAD COME TOGETHER.” (Acts 19:32 ESV)
This assembly of people was in confusion. That confusion is also mentioned in verse 29. The word translated “confusion” comes from a Greek word that literally points to pouring together or mixing together and is used for the troubling or confusing of the mind. That confusion was carried to the point that most of the people did not even know why they had come together!
The word used by Luke in recording this scene that is translated “assembly” is from the Greek “ekklesia” (“ek”, out of, and “klesis”, a calling) and thus literally points to the “called out”. This assembly had been called out from what they had been doing to become a part of a riotous mob. This is also the word used in Scripture as a designation for the church (i.e. Acts 20:28; Ephesians 1:22; and other passages) that has been called out of the world into the kingdom of God or out of darkness into light.
When the church is assembled, is there confusion? Do we KNOW why we are there? How MEANINGFUL can it be if we have no clue? Do we merely get caught up in what others around us are doing or do we involve ourselves in MEANINGFUL WORSHIP to God?
As Paul exhorted the church at Corinth toward eliminating chaos in their worship in order to build up the church (“ekklesia”, 1 Corinthians 14:12) he stated…
“What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I WILL PRAY WITH MY MIND ALSO; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I WILL SING WITH MY MIND ALSO.” (1 Corinthians 14:15 ESV)
Though our worship together may be spirited, it is not to be mindless motion. We must worship with an UNDERSTANDING of what we are doing, why we are doing it, and that it is what the God Whom we worship has asked of us? Though we may be worshiping assembled together, it is still something personal we are offering up to God. May He be glorified and pleased with what we offer.
Have a great day CLEAR MINDED ABOUT ALL WE DO!

High Elevation Caution!
One good thing about remaining with our feet on the ground is that if we stumble and fall we don’t have far to go. It is when we find ourselves at an elevated height that we become keenly aware of the serious injury a fall could bring. On high scaffolding or other elevated platforms are posted warnings about using safety harnesses or bold red print stating “Watch Your Step!” On the edge of cliffs are signs warning that getting too close could result in falling over the edge. Unfortunately, there is not always such awareness in all areas of life. Someone has said, “Nothing is as difficult to do gracefully as getting off your high horse.” [source: calendar quote]
Whenever we have stumbled or fallen, how gracefully was it done? Usually not very! We lose a little of our dignity when we fall down, especially in the sight of others. The same is true spiritually. As awkward is it might be to dismount a high horse, the “high horse” of PRIDE is even more so! There is nothing graceful about falling. However, God’s grace can help encourage us to get back up and get our focus and direction back on track.
Solomon warned…
“(17) The highway of the upright turns aside from evil; whoever guards his way preserves his life. (18) PRIDE GOES BEFORE DESTRUCTION, AND A HAUGHTY SPIRIT BEFORE A FALL.” (Proverbs 16:17-18 ESV)
We must be cautious. We need to remain watchful for the warning signs that PRIDE is moving in. If we find ourselves there, it is more important to come down than to save face because of the real danger of remaining there. Paul mentioned that overseers who were PUFFED UP WITH CONCEIT would fall into condemnation. (1 Tim. 3:6) It remains true for all of us that PRIDE sets us up for an injurious fall.
Peter exhorted…
“(5) Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. CLOTHE YOURSELVES, ALL OF YOU, WITH HUMILITY toward one another, for “GOD OPPOSES THE PROUD BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.’ (6) HUMBLE YOURSELVES, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so THAT AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU, (7) casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:5-7 ESV)
Whether the elevation be physical or in our mind, let us recognize the warning signs! Maintaining a humble spirit will help push PRIDE aside and keep us on a level footing as we follow the direction of the Lord.
Have a great day RIDING A HUMBLE HORSE WITH GRACE!

Living Out Front!
Being first! Leading the way! Out front! Is that the place we seek? Such could be viewed as being very self-centered. However, there is a sense in which such a desire is precisely the right focus.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome we read…
“(9) Let LOVE BE GENUINE. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. (10) LOVE one another WITH BROTHERLY AFFECTION. OUTDO ONE ANOTHER IN SHOWING HONOR.” (Romans 12:9-10 ESV)
The genuine love, the brotherly affection, the honoring of each other -- all that marks a specialness of the relationship we as Christians are to share. The last phrase of the text reads in some other translations as follows: “…Honor one another above yourselves.” (NIV). “…Give preference to one another in honor;” (NASB). “…In honour preferring one another;” (KJV). The Greek word is “proegeomai” which means “to go before and show the way, to go before and lead, to go before as a leader.” [Strong’s lexicon] The idea is that of stepping out front and TAKING THE LEAD in considering and honoring others. Imagine how the sight of Christians eager to forget self and honor one another could impact the world! What a powerful display of loving consideration! Remember how Jesus stated the thing that would help the world see His followers were His disciples was by their love for one another. (John 13:35)
TAKING THE LEAD! Stepping out front in focusing the attention on others! What a wonderful way to encourage. What are marvelous picture of a servant heart. What an amazing way to eliminate competition for status by striving to be first to serve and honor others. With each of us striving to do this, what a beautiful and encouraging spirit will be experienced in the family of God. May we each step out in doing it!
Have a great day OUT FRONT WITH OTHER-CENTEREDNESS!

What We Do!
I recently attended a meeting evaluating the temporary homeless shelter that ran in our community for three months this past winter and participated in discussion regarding plans for next winter. Two of the men from our congregation and I had helped serve as night monitors on several nights and look forward to assisting again. At this meeting I was asked to open the time of discussion with a “reflection.” I wasn’t sure what was meant by a “reflection” so I did what I know how to do; I led the group in PRAYER!
Today, the first Thursday in May, has been designated a “National Day Of Prayer” here in the United States. Though not observed by everyone, the purpose of this day goes back to Abraham Lincoln who was the sixteenth President of the United States during a very difficult time of conflict within the nation. The purpose of this day was stated by Lincoln on April 30, 1863 as a “National Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer” for these United States of America. Though we seem to be at a time in our history when public PRAYER is being discouraged in many circles -- even being viewed by some as offensive -- PRAYER happens and is still very much needed. We need it as individuals. Our families need it. Our communities need it. The country in which we live needs it. The world needs it. Do we need a proclamation to get us to PRAY or is it an ongoing aspect of our daily life?
Paul urged…
“(1) First of all, then, I URGE THAT SUPPLICATIONS, PRAYERS, INTERCESSIONS, AND THANKSGIVINGS BE MADE FOR ALL PEOPLE, (2) for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. (3) THIS IS GOOD, AND IT IS PLEASING IN THE SIGHT OF GOD OUR SAVIOR, (4) WHO DESIRES ALL PEOPLE TO BE SAVED AND TO COME TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4 ESV)
Though as Christians we have a higher citizenship -- a heavenly one (Philippians 3:20) -- as good citizens on earth we should be in PRAYER for all in high positions. Being believers in God we ought to be people of PRAYER. Everyone is in need of PRAYER whether they recognize it or not. Therefore, let us not cease PRAYING. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) God still listens!
Have a great day LIVING A LIFE OF PRAYER!

In His Presence!
A child’s awareness that their actions are taking place under the WATCHFUL EYE of their parents can produce either a sense of fear or joy. When a child is doing or considering doing something they know they have been told not to, the WATCHFUL EYE of their parents makes them very uncomfortable. On the other hand, when involved in a school program, getting ready to do a back flip off a diving board (or some other such activity), or trying something for the first time of which they might need help, they want the full attention of their parents and are joyful to receive it.
Solomon noted…
“The EYES OF THE LORD ARE IN EVERY PLACE, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3 ESV)
The WATCHFUL EYE of parents can sometimes be avoided, but that is not the case with our Heavenly Father. Our every action is committed under His WATCHFUL EYE. How does that make us feel? Doesn’t it depend on the kind of relationship we are seeking to retain with Him? If we are sincerely seeking to please God there should be great comfort in knowing our life is within His full view; He being aware of our challenges as well as our successes in life.
Let us continually be mindful of living our life in the presence of God. There is nothing that can be hidden from Him (note Hebrews 4:13) and our accountability to God must be given serious consideration. However, knowing He is fully aware of every aspect of our life should give us joy in knowing we are significant to Him. He knows all that we need! (Matthew 6:32) He cares! (1 Peter 5:7) May His WATCHFUL EYE be an ever present producer of both comfort and joy!
Have a great day RELISHING LIFE IN GOD’S PRESENCE!

Process Of Duplication!
Each week a tape recorder is turned on and my Sunday morning sermons are recorded. This provides an opportunity to go back if someone wonders about something I’ve said and listen to what I actually did say. There are also times someone may ask for a copy of the tape either for themselves or to share with another. When making a copy from that MASTER tape we know the copy will play only what came from the MASTER. The duplicator (or duel cassette recorder) does not make up a lesson of its own. Perhaps the sound quality will not be quite the same as the original MASTER, but the words will be the same. We once had a duel cassette recorder that varied in speed from one deck to the other and the copies were good, but slightly slower than the MASTER from which the recording was made. Nevertheless, even then the message was still the same.
After washing the disciples’ feet and asking them if they understood what He had done, we read…
“(13) You call me TEACHER AND LORD, and YOU ARE RIGHT, for so I am. (14) If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. (15) For I have given you an EXAMPLE, that you also should DO JUST AS I HAVE DONE to you. (16) Truly, truly, I say to you, a SERVANT IS NOT GREATER THAN HIS MASTER, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. (17) If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” (John 13:13-17 ESV)
Jesus is Lord! He is the MASTER Teacher! Being His servants we must bear in mind that we are not greater than the MASTER as the messenger is also not greater than the one who sent them. The message we have received from Christ, the MASTER, is not to be changed, but delivered to others in the words He has given and have been recorded in Scripture. We are not to make up our own message! The quality of our delivery may not be as good as the MASTER and we might be a little slower in getting the truth shared, but the MASTER’S message must remain His as we share it. His servant character is also to be duplicated in our life as well.
Being a disciple of Jesus means we are a learner of Him. We are to become like Him. May we continually seek to clearly be a duplication of the life and teachings of our Lord and MASTER, Jesus Christ. It is what the world around us most needs to hear and see!
Have a great day CLEARLY CONVEYING HIS MESSAGE IN WORD AND DEED!
