Let It Spring Up!
There was an elderly woman who did not have much in the way of the world's goods, but was very rich in enthusiasm connected to her Christian faith. Though she was a member of a very staid and dignified congregation, she often burst out with an exuberant “Hallelujah!” much to the dismay of the leadership. Finally the elders approached her with the proposition that if she would not disturb the peace of the church service with her spontaneity, they would give here two large, warm blankets. She was desperately in need of the extra blankets and therefore agreed.
The next Sunday morning, after hearing another glorious Bible truth, she just could not contain herself. Out came a loud “Hallelujah!” as she noticed two elders sitting close by give her a stern look. She remained quiet for a few minutes until another wonderful truth gripped her heart, but she caught herself before the praise escaped her lips. However, several minutes later, when the preacher stated another truth that thrilled her deep within, she broke forth with, “Blankets or no blankets, praise the Lord, Hallelujah!”
“Enthusiasm” comes from two Greek words: “en” and “theos” which brings the focus of the word to be “in God” or “God in”. That ought to be a source of great enthusiasm. When we realize all that God has done and is doing for us PRAISE should naturally spring up in our lives and from our lips. Just as laughter is a natural response when struck by something funny, so PRAISE should be a natural response when struck by that which is good and glorious in our view of God and His truth!
Note these words through the prophet Isaiah.
“For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and PRAISE TO SPROUT UP before all the nations.” (Isaiah 61:11 ESV)
And the Psalmist wrote…
“I will bless the LORD at all times; HIS PRAISE SHALL CONTINUALLY BE IN MY MOUTH.” (Psalm 34:1 ESV)
As naturally as the truth of God grips our soul and touches our heart, may the PRAISE spring forth as well!
Have a great day SINGING HIS PRAISES!

How Much?
“Fifty dollars is a lot of money for the three minutes you spent pulling my tooth,” said the patient to his dentist. “If you wish,’ the dentist replied calmly, “I can pull the next one more slowly.”
Sometimes it pays to have the expert take care of the job quickly. How true it often is that you get what you pay for. There are times we have paid little and that’s exactly what we got. [I could share numerous examples, but I’m sure you have your own and we might not want to admit how often we have made the wrong choice.] Other times we have paid much and gotten something that was well engineered to work well for a long time.
Now consider the idea of getting what someone else has paid for.
“(18) knowing that YOU WERE RANSOMED from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, (19) but WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” (1 Peter 1:18-19 ESV)
A high price was paid for our redemption and what was purchased is of lasting value since the provision is for our eternity. I couldn’t buy it. All the gold in Ft. Knox wouldn’t have been enough either. What a wonderful thing to think about us getting what GOD PAID FOR. May our life reveal our sincere appreciation for this purchase.
Have a great day ENJOYING WHAT GOD HAS BOUGHT FOR YOU!

Advise Whom?
Can you imagine, going into the office of the president of a company, asking him to give you a job, and then telling him the job you want is to advise him in his business? Do you think he would excitedly jump at the chance to employ you? Or do you think he would look at you as if you were crazy and possibly ask you where you were when he founded his company? If he didn't throw you out of his office, possibly he would offer you a position in the mail-room with the opportunity for advancement in the future.
Now, as incredulous as the above might sound, there are some who wish to serve God -- but only in an advisory capacity. They want to tell God how they want things rather than looking for and accepting what is in accordance with the wisdom of His will.
God asked Job…
“(2) Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? (3) Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. (4) WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH? Tell me, if you have understanding.” (Job 38:2-4 ESV)
And Peter exhorted…
“HUMBLE YOURSELVES, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so THAT AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU,” (1 Peter 5:6 ESV)
LET GOD BE GOD! Always recognize His wisdom far exceeds ours! Trust His purposes to prevail!
Have a great day FOLLOWING THE COUNSEL OF GOD!

Warning! Warning!
“Warning! Warning! Alert! Alert! Danger! Danger!” [Those words make me think of the robot on “Lost In Space”.] Flashing lights! Ringing bells! Blasting horns! Screaming sirens! All meant to gain our attention and get us to act either to deal with and avert the danger or remove ourselves from it.
Warning systems are used in so many areas of life today. They have been set to warn of fire, smoke, illegal entry, power overloads, leaks, dangerous levels of gases, tidal waves, landslides, floods, etc. These warning systems are marvelous, provided they have been set properly. One could have purchased the most sophisticated alarm system, but if it has not been properly programmed, what good is it?
God has given us a warning system that is also marvelous, provided it is properly programmed and its warnings are heeded.
It has been said that “Conscience is God’s built-in warning system. Be very happy when it hurts you. Be very worried when it doesn’t.”
Paul stated…
“So I ALWAYS TAKE PAINS TO HAVE A CLEAR CONSCIENCE toward both God and man.” (Acts 24:16 ESV)
“For OUR BOAST IS THIS: THE TESTIMONY OF OUR CONSCIENCE that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.” (2 Corinthians 1:12 ESV)
Has our CONSCIENCE been properly programmed through a continual focus on God’s Word? When its bells go off and its light goes on do we heed the warning? God wants us to be warned when there is a chance of slipping, falling, or getting burned by things contrary to His way. Let us allow God to aid us in programming our CONSCIENCE that we may be warned of those things that are out of place with His will.
Have a great day HEEDING A GOD SET CONSCIENCE!

Alone!
It is sad how loneliness is experienced by some even in the midst of a crowded room. With all the people in the world, why should anyone be left to feel alone? On the other hand, in a life filled with encounters with others and the demands associated with such, spending some time alone can be something highly prized.
Paul Tillich (German theologian and teacher, 1886-1965) is quoted as stating, “Language has created the word, ‘loneliness’, to express the pain of being alone, and the word ‘solitude’, to express the glory of being alone.” The first is not good, but the latter is highly beneficial in physical, emotional, and spiritual ways.
As Jesus went about His ministry here on earth, His growing popularity created such a challenge that there were times He and the disciples “had no leisure even to eat.” (Mark 6:31 ESV) Because of this they had to slip away to get some time alone. (Mark 6:32)
Luke recorded this practice of Jesus as follows:
“(15) But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. (16) But HE WOULD WITHDRAW TO DESOLATE PLACES AND PRAY.” (Luke 5:16 ESV)
The Greek word translated “desolate” is a word that was used for the wilderness or desert (i.e. Mark 1:3; Hebrews 3:8) and as the designation of a desolate place (i.e. Mark 1:35 and 6:31-32 ESV). According to Strong’s Lexicon this word means “solitary, lonely, desolate, uninhabited” and was also used with reference to one who is deserted by another.
Jesus’ purpose for withdrawing was for some SOLITARY TIME spent in prayer. If the Son of God needed that time while upon this earth, who are we to think we do not need the same? In the midst of busy lives such time should be seen as glorious and precious.
I pray that each one reading this focus has the refreshing blessing of family, friends, and especially brothers and sisters in Christ who offer freedom from the pain of loneliness. If that is not the case I want you to know God cares and so do I. However, I also pray that we are each able to find the great blessing of spending some SOLITARY TIME in meditation on God’s Word and in prayer. That alone time can become a great source of refreshment and strength in preparation for the opportunities God provides for serving His purposes.
Have a great day INSPIRED BY SOME QUIET TIME!

Instruments!
As Ananias was told to go look for a man of Tarsus named Saul (Acts 9:10-11), in view of his understandable hesitation due to the awareness of Saul’s purpose for having headed for Damascus (Acts 9:13-14), Ananias was encouraged by the Lord that Saul was chosen by Him for a specific purpose.
We read…
“(15) But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a CHOSEN INSTRUMENT of mine TO CARRY MY NAME before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. (16) For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.’” (Acts 9:15-16 ESV)
In short, Ananias went (Acts 9:17), Saul was baptized (Acts 9:18), his ministry for the Lord began (Acts 9:19-22), and he soon became known as Paul.(Acts 13:9). Saul/Paul -- the Lord’s “chosen instrument -- and what an instrument he became going from persecutor to persecuted for the Name of Jesus.
When I hear the word “instrument” my mind thinks of more than one thing. I think of the instruments in the hands of a surgeon, or those used by a carpenter, or that which is associated with some other profession. The Greek word used in the above passage is “skeuos”, a word used with reference to a vessel or implement, household utensil, domestic gear, tackle and armament, etc. In Acts 27:17 we find it used for the gear of a ship. However, I also think of the instruments in the hands of musicians.
Whatever kind of instrument we may consider, with each one we understand they do not guide, function, or play (granted there are some programmed electronic musical instruments today) themselves. These instruments fulfill their function in the hands of the one who puts them to use. Paul was a chosen instrument in the HANDS OF THE LORD to do His Will.
Consider the idea for a moment in relation to musical instruments. When writing a piece of music, it is the composer (or arranger) who decides what parts they want each instrument to play. Together these parts make up a wonderful masterpiece. Sometimes there are solo passages. These may be completely solo with the other parts marked “tacit” (no playing) while other times the solo may be softly supported by the rest of the instruments. It is even possible for one part alone to seem a bit strange until other parts are added to it. I recently had the experience of playing a piece that my part (when practicing alone) seemed a little strange like it was missing something, but it all made sense when I performed it with the rest of the orchestra.
Instruments in the HANDS OF THE LORD to do His Will! Each of us has a part -- not the same part -- but together they harmonize just like Paul and others who labored in the Name of the Lord. Sometimes Paul’s performance of works was solo (Acts 17:16-31) -- though not apart from Christ -- and other times it was a duet with Barnabas (Acts 13:2) and another time with Silas. (Acts 15:40) We even find him with a trio having John Mark assist he and Barnabas. (Acts 13:5) Still other times it may have been a quartet or quintet or other ensemble heralding the message of Jesus. As instruments in the HANDS OF THE LORD, Paul and others brought the sweet music of the message of Jesus to the ears of others. May we remain open to the ways in which the Lord will fulfill His purposes with our life as well.
Have a great day BEING AN INSTRUMENT FOR THE MASTER’S MUSIC!

Intimate Connections!
The handshakes, high-fives, pats on the back, and hugs we receive from one another are great encouragers as we each press on in our Christian walk. Those physical connections with others can mean a great deal. Knowing the fellowship we have with each other serves to bolster our faith and reminds us we are not alone.
While listing a number of characteristics of Christian connectivity Paul stated…
“REJOICE WITH THOSE WHO REJOICE, WEEP WITH THOSE WHO WEEP.” (Romans 12:15 ESV)
Such is not the picture of merely acknowledging someone else’s joy by saying, “I’m happy for you.” Nor is it the idea of sympathizing with others in saying, “I’m sorry for your loss.” The connection of hearts Paul noted here is one of being able to empathize with others; feeling not just for them, but with them in possessing an openness to EXPERIENCE IT WITH THEM. Their joys become our joys and thus joy is multiplied. Their tears become our tears and the burden of sorrow is shared. This kind of connection reveals the presence of unselfish Christian character. Because of our tie with one another through Christ and the bond of love we share, such relationships can be developed where we cannot help the joys and sorrows of others from BECOMING OUR OWN.
The world may be jealous of the successes and joys of others and may turn their back so as to not be dragged down emotionally by other’s sorrows. However, the Christian heart is to be touchable on both accounts. To rejoice with rather than being jealous is a sign of maturity. To be drawn to the weeping and SHARE IN IT rather than turning away signifies a soft heart able to intimately connect empathetically with others. It is an unselfish heart able to be involved in -- as someone has called it -- “FELLOW-FEELING”! May that heart continue to be nurtured in our relationships with one another so that the mutual benefit of encouragement and support may be experienced.
Have a great day EXPERIENCING ONE ANOTHER LIVING!

Sitting Being Good?
For a little boy, the sign of his BEING GOOD may be to simply be sitting still with his hands folded. This is the way he keeps out of trouble. And everyone says, “He’s such a GOOD BOY keeping out of the way.”
When we consider our approach to a life of BEING GOOD is this the way we try to attain it? Do we boast about the trouble we have kept ourselves out of, patting ourselves on the back and saying, “Oh, what a GOOD BOY [girl] I have been”?
Someone has stated: “Some folks are so busy being good they forget they should be busy doing good.” [source: calendar quote]
When we consider how Jesus contrasted the prayer of the Pharisee with that of the tax collector we are struck with how GOOD the Pharisee thought he was.
“(11) The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. (12) I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’” (Luke 18:11-12 ESV)
Do you hear the boast? “I’ve been GOOD sitting here with my hands piously folded. That way I’ve kept my hands off other people’s property, kept my hands to myself, and kept my hands off my neighbor’s wife.” But what GOOD was he DOING? He mentioned his fasting and his giving in accordance with the law. However, where was his focus on extending compassion and mercy? Jesus had accused the Jewish leaders of observing some things while forgetting such weightier matters. (note Matthew 23:23) Where was the effort for helping uplift others rather than looking down upon them as this Pharisee did the tax collector?
In a short biography Peter gave regarding the life of Jesus, he noted how our Lord “went about DOING GOOD”. (Acts 10:38) If we are to be like Christ we ought to be DOING the same. Rather than sitting with our hands folded, may be go through each day with them extended in service to the glory of God.
Have a great day DOING GOOD!

The Permeating Preeminence!
When we are considering our choices of places to go and actions to take part in, as Christians we should always be mindful of how those choices reflect Christ. Would He do what we do and would He go where we go? Perhaps the better question to ask is: Are we willing to go where JESUS WOULD GO and do what JESUS WOULD DO? Do we seek to advise the Lord hoping to receive His stamp of approval on our choices or are we willing to submit to the direction of His Will?
In Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae, he note the place that belongs to Jesus.
“(15) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (16) For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -- all things were created THROUGH HIM AND FOR HIM. (17) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (18) And HE IS THE HEAD OF THE BODY, THE CHURCH. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, THAT IN EVERYTHING HE MIGHT BE PREEMINENT.” (Colossians 1:15-18 ESV)
Jesus Christ holds the supreme position over His body, the church. He is to be acknowledged as THE HEAD of it. Paul also noted this truth in his letter to the church at Ephesus. (Ephesians 5:23) Earlier in that letter he pointed out that Jesus is THE HEAD of His body, the church, which is “the fullness of him who fills all in all.” (Ephesians 1:22-23) Between these passages we should understand how Jesus not only has the PREEMINENCE over His body as THE HEAD, but the “fullness” of His essence is to PERMEATE (spread through and fill) the whole body as well. If we are going to be like Christ and influence the world for Him, we must surrender to this reality in our relationship to Him as the Lord of our whole life.
How can the body be expected to function if the body leaves the HEAD behind. That is exactly what is done when the authority and preeminence of Christ is set aside in favor of the choices of society or a congregation of people. However, we must also consider this individually, because as a part of the body of Christ we do not cease to be a part of it when we are away from the assembly of our brethren. Daily living is still to be approached from the standpoint of ALLOWING THE HEAD -- Jesus Christ -- to guide where we go and what we do. Rightfully being under Him as THE HEAD it cannot be any other way.
Have a great day LABORING AND LIVING UNDER THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS!

Occupational Therapy!
To hear the title “Occupational Therapist” one might think such a person would be an individual who helped people find work or offer direction with regard to a specific occupation. However, occupational therapy is defined as “therapy through activity” and is actually associated with medical fields. It is therapy done at regular intervals in the treatment of an illness or medical condition to move one back toward PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY. Following an injury of some sort or a stroke, such therapy may be necessary for retraining in walking or even being able to dress oneself again. The process may be a slow one, but any sign of movement toward more PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY is always encouraging.
Do we need some “occupational therapy” in a spiritual sense? Are there some things with regard to our life walk or the manner in which we dress our life that we could use some retraining to bring about more PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY in our life?
Having walked in sin (Ephesians 2:1-2) we were found to be in need of some occupational therapy to help us walk in a manner more favorable to PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY in accordance with God’s Will. What is to mark the walk we are continuing to be retrained toward?
Paul stated…
“For we are his workmanship, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand, that WE SHOULD WALK IN THEM.” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)
Since we are God’s workmanship we need to be mindful of training toward all that He created us to be and do. Such is to become our manner of walking. How focused are we on it?
Though I have been walking regularly for several years, last November I developed shin pains in one leg and the doctor sent me to a sports therapist. Since we live in a small community, this therapist had already seen me walking around town and knew some things that needed to change in my walking style. Besides exercises prescribed to strengthen and stretch some of my lower leg muscles I also had to learn to seriously concentrate on the alignment of my legs with my body (not throwing my legs off to the side) and also on which toe I should launch off of as I took each step. Being used to walking a certain way for so long it took almost my full concentration to walk in a manner that was better for my body. Within one week of the beginning of therapy the pain was gone and I was able to gradually build up to my former distance over a three to four week period.
Just as learning to walk physically in a different manner takes such concentration and practice, the same is true spiritually. It doesn’t just happen by itself. The proper manner in walking must be acknowledged and practiced on a regular basis so that gradually it can become the comfortable and natural style for our walk.
In writing to the Colossians, Paul exhorted…
“(5) Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. (6) On account of these the wrath of God is coming. (7) IN THESE YOU TOO ONCE WALKED, when you were living in them. (8) But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. (9) Do not lie to one another, seeing that YOU HAVE PUT OFF THE OLD SELF WITH ITS PRACTICES (10) AND HAVE PUT ON THE NEW SELF, WHICH IS BEING RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE AFTER THE IMAGE OF ITS CREATOR.” (Colossians 3:5-10 ESV)
The process toward greater PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY is ongoing. We have been created to walk in good works. We have also put on the new self that is in the process of being renewed back toward the image of its Creator. May we continue to follow the “therapy through activity” on a regular basis that our Creator has prescribed.
Have a great day CLOTHED AND WALKING IN A GODLY STYLE!

Complete Translation!
It can be challenging to translate something from one language to another. Sometimes it is difficult to find the right word to adequately express a concept contained in the word of one language to precisely convey the same idea in another. Exegesis is done on words of the Bible in an attempt to find the way they were originally used (or were being used at the time of the writing) in order to better understand what the writer was trying to get across. To understand the original meaning helps in properly applying the concept to life today. When we understand that Jesus spoke in Aramaic, that the Gospels were written in Greek and then we read those words in English, perhaps we wonder about the PRESERVATION of the original meaning. Between English translations of the Bible there is often variation in wording or phrasing and sometimes quiet markedly so. Though I do not consider all translations of equal quality, often keeping the context of the passage in mind and not allowing it to overshadow other Scripture -- but rather seeing how all of Scripture fits together -- we can generally come away with a clear understanding of the truth being conveyed.
Perhaps what we need to be most concerned about is whether or not the “complete translation” is being PRESERVED in our life. To spend time daily reading through the Scriptures is definitely a good thing. Being able to give Biblical responses to questions relating to God’s Word is also excellent. However, we have fallen far short of “complete translation” when we fail to PRESERVE the true meaning in the manner in which we live.
As Jesus was confronted with some who would not accept Him and the message He preached, He noted…
“(39) YOU SEARCH the Scriptures because YOU THINK that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, (40) yet YOU REFUSE TO COME TO ME that you may have life.” (John 5:39-40 ESV)
In the pursuit of attaining eternal life they searched the Scriptures. They were well studied. They knew what the Scriptures said. They were familiar with the Law and thought their knowledge would bring them to eternal life. However, they did not allow that knowledge to move them toward the One who came to provide their eternal salvation. Jesus went on to state that if they believed Moses, they would believe Him because Moses had written about Him. (John 5:46)
Remember Jesus’ exhortation toward translating the word to life.
“Everyone then who HEARS THESE WORDS OF MINE AND DOES THEM will be like a WISE man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24 ESV)
How does our life read? Have the Scriptures lost something in translation between the written page and the manner in which we live? What will others learn if our life happens to be the only Bible they read? Reading to gain a knowledge of the Scriptures is important, but there is a sense in which we need to read to be read! If people are able to begin to read us like a book, may it be God’s Book. As Jesus’ walk on earth was as “the Truth” (John 14:6) and the “Word” in the flesh (John 1:14) may we strive to share that likeness as His disciples.

Remember The Business!
There was a super-salesman who sold a very complicated filing system to a thriving business. Three months later this salesman decided to visit the company to see how well the new filing system was working out.
“It is working magnificently,” responded the company president, “out of this world.”
“And how is your business getting along now?” asked the salesman.
The president smiled. “Oh, we had to give up our business in order to run the filing system!”
Priorities! What our business is all about! Do we get it confused at times? Do we end up getting CAUGHT UP IN THE PROCESS AND FORGET THE PURPOSE?
Jesus was faced with Jewish leaders who had some difficulties distinguishing priorities. On one occasion Jesus rebuked them with these words:
“(23) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. THESE YOU OUGHT TO HAVE DONE, WITHOUT NEGLECTING THE OTHERS. (24) You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” (Matthew 23:23-24 ESV)
As the early church began to grow, a problem arose where the needs of some Grecian widows were being overlooked. Yet the Apostles kept the most important things in mind while arranging for the other important needs to be met as well.
“(2) And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, ‘It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. (3) Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. (4) But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.’” (Acts 6:2-4 ESV)
So, rather than being set aside, the business of the Kingdom of God continued and ...
“… the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.” (Acts 6:7 ESV)
May we keep the PRIORITIES RIGHT. Let us not get so focused on a tool that we forget what the business is all about!
Have a great day BEING LIKE CHRIST -- “ABOUT THE FATHER’S BUSINESS.”

Framed?
While walking yesterday I noticed a bumper sticker which read, “Eve Was Framed.” Was whoever placed that sticker on their car trying to say that Eve was innocent? To me it simply reflects the mentality of so many today who wish to excuse wrong actions by claiming they are actually “victims” themselves. When God asked Eve about what she had done she responded that the serpent had deceived her and so she ate. (Genesis 3:13) Perhaps some would say, “Yes, she was a victim here.” However, what did she KNOW? What did she UNDERSTAND?
When the serpent tried to place some doubts in her mind by asking her what God had actually said, we read her response…
“(2) And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, (3) BUT GOD SAID, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”” (Genesis 3:2-3 ESV)
She KNEW what God had said. Such awareness should aid in protecting against deception. She revealed she KNEW and yet she still made a choice contrary to what God had said and suffered the consequences for her own disobedience. If she was a “victim” she was so by her own choice of going against that which she UNDERSTOOD. It is the same for us. Perhaps this is one of the ways in which we could be our own worst enemy.
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome he stated…
“(18) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who BY THEIR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS SUPPRESS THE TRUTH. (19) For WHAT CAN BE KNOWN ABOUT GOD IS PLAIN TO THEM, because God has shown it to them. (20) For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. SO THEY ARE WITHOUT EXCUSE. (21) For ALTHOUGH THEY KNEW GOD, THEY DID NOT HONOR HIM AS GOD or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:18-21 ESV)
Someone has stated that it was not what they didn’t understand in the Scriptures that bothered them, but what they DID UNDERSTAND. That means we need to come to grips with the truth we know by submitting to it and applying it to our lives. To KNOW and not do so leaves us without excuse. We are ACCOUNTABLE for the choices we make based on the KNOWLEDGE we possess. Are we at least living up to or holding true to what we have already attained? (Philippians 3:16)
Our Lord allowed Himself to be the true “victim” on behalf of our sins. How are we showing appreciation to Him for having done that for us. Are we striving to live in a manner pleasing to Him? If we are going to be “framed” may it be that our life is being lived within the “framework” of God’s Will.
Have a great day GUARDED AND GUIDED BY GOD’S WILL!

A Shared Work!
Now that Spring is here I have seen more people towing their boats through town to go fishing. Though it has been quite a while since I have personally gone fishing, I do remember aspects of fishing that were more enjoyable than others. There is good company and conversation that can be enjoyed while waiting for the fish to bite. Just being near the water or out on it can be therapeutic. Anticipating the first tug at the line, the excitement of the catch itself, and enjoying the fish later are also very pleasurable experiences. However, the least enjoyable part of fishing is having to CLEAN the fish. Growing up, I understood that if I caught the fish I had to CLEAN them. What a delight when one can have the fun of catching with someone else to take care of the CLEANING.
As Jesus began to call the disciples to follow Him, we read…
“(18) While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. (19) And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN.’ (20) Immediately they left their nets and followed him. (21) And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. (22) Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.” (Matthew 4:18-22 ESV)
Peter, Andrew, James, and John were men who knew fishing. As partners (Luke 5:10) in the fishing business they were very familiar with the patience involved and also the smells and the sweat that went along with the work. Jesus chose these men to join in a new kind of fishing. They were called into a partnership with the Lord in a work of eternal significance. Yes, there would be work involved. There would be challenges. However, with the new fishing they would be encouraged by the company and conversation of others involved and be thrilled at each catch, but it was the Lord Who would do the CLEANING. (Ephesians 5:26; 1 John 1:7 & 9)
Been fishing lately? How wonderful to be in partnership with the Lord in such a work. Let us keep casting and catching so that others may experience HIS CLEANSING power.
Have a great day KEEPING THE LINE OUT TO DRAW OTHERS IN!

In Stride With Christ!
Perhaps you have read Charles Sheldon’s classic book, “In His Steps” (written in 1896), or are familiar with the popularity of “WWJD” bracelets, key chains, and other items intended to keep in mind the concept “What Would Jesus Do?” that this book inspired. It is possible for such things to merely become a fad or a phase for a while, but is there a sense in which it should truly be the essence of every day living? I first read this story in the 1970’s and passed it on to others. If you have also read the book then you know as each character came to grips with making their decisions in light of the question “What would Jesus do?”, they found it to not be as easy as they had thought. In truth, striving to live LIKE JESUS is made tough by the world. Nevertheless, we have been called to follow in His steps.
As Paul was encouraging Christians facing trials of the faith, Peter exhorted…
“(21) For to this you have been called, because CHRIST also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so THAT YOU MIGHT FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS. (22) He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. (23) When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:21-23 ESV)
In every situation of life it may not always be easy to know exactly what Jesus would do. Reading through the Gospels we may even be surprised at what Jesus did do on various occasions. We may rightfully marvel at the way He responded and treated others even as He perceived more about their lives than we have been given the power to do so. The thing for us to recognize is that if Jesus is going to be seen in our life, being mindful of doing, living and responding in a CHRISTLIKE manner ought to continually be given serious consideration.
In view of the example of Jesus, even the suffering of persecution or ridicule or whatever is not to deter us from being LIKE HIM. Regardless of how the world may treat us, LIKE CHRIST there should be no deceitfulness associated with our speech. (vs.23) If we are reviled (insulted) we are not to retaliate. (vs.23) LIKE JESUS we are to learn to entrust ourselves to the One Who will judge justly (vs.23) and ultimately deal with those who refuse to accept the life He has called us to live.
It’s up to us. What will we do? Whose example are we going to base the decisions on? What better model than the Lord Jesus Christ who was without sin. (vs.22) If we truly desire to help the world see Christ and the difference He has made in our life, let us seriously consider our daily walk in light of how He would approach it. It may take a few steps to keep up with His stride, but if we are in Christ, how can we walk any other way?
As John exhorted…
“(6) WHOEVER SAYS HE ABIDES IN HIM OUGHT TO WALK IN THE SAME WAY IN WHICH HE WALKED.” (1 John 2:6 ESV)
Have a great day WALKING IN THE STEPS OF THE MASTER!

Signing On!
The story has been told of a company attempting to start a new pension plan for its employees; a plan requiring 100 percent participation. All except one employee had signed up and no amount of argument or persuasion could get him to change his mind. Finally, the president of the company called the man into his office and said, “Here is a copy of the proposed pension plan and here is a pen. Sign up or you’re fired!” Immediately the man picked up the pen and signed his name. The president of the company then said, “I don’t understand why you refused to sign until now. What was your problem?” The man replied, “You’re the first person who explained it to me clearly.”
There are many who refuse to accept God’s Will and the need for believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. It seems that no amount of argument or reasoning is able to convince them of the need to “sign on” in the sense of accepting what God has provided to take care of man’s greatest need -- the salvation of the soul. What is it that CLEARLY must be understood?
Peter, responding to Jewish officials with regard to the power and authority by which a man had been healed, stated the following.
“(8) Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, (9) if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, (10) let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead -- by him this man is standing before you well. (11) This JESUS is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. (12) and there is SALVATION IN NO ONE ELSE, for there is NO OTHER NAME UNDER HEAVEN given among men BY WHICH WE MUST BE SAVED.’” (Acts 4:8-12 ESV)
The thing that must be CLEARLY recognized is that without JESUS we are lost! Living a good life and even believing in God (note James 2:19) is not enough. Jesus came so the world could BE SAVED THROUGH HIM. (John 3:17) He came to seek and to SAVE THE LOST. (Luke 19:10; 1 Timothy 1:15) The lost condition must be CLEARLY recognized and the fact JESUS IS THE ONLY MEANS OF SALVATION.
In response to those who asked, “what must we do?” (Acts 2:37), Peter pointed to the need of repenting and being baptized “in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST” for the forgiveness of sins. (Acts 2:38)
When a Philippian jailor asked, “what must I do to be saved?”, he was told by Paul that he needed to believe IN THE LORD JESUS. (Acts 16:31) He did believe and he and his household were baptized the night.
Jesus pointed out that those who do not believe “in the name of the ONLY SON OF GOD” are condemned already. (John 3:18)
In Mark’s account of the great commission Jesus pointed out that whoever believes and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16:16)
To the church at Rome Paul associated salvation with confessing that “JESUS IS LORD” and believing God raised Him from the dead. (Rom. 10:9)
And when Peter pointed to the example of Noah and his family being saved by water, he stated how baptism corresponds to that by saving “through the resurrection of JESUS CHRIST.” (1 Peter 3:20-21)
CLEARLY a proper focus on JESUS CHRIST is necessary because salvation is found IN HIM. (note again Acts 4:12) God’s plan of redemption in Christ is the one to “sign on” in the sense of accepting it as the means of our salvation. Offering eternal hope it is the best “pension plan” we could possibly have.
Have a great day ACCEPTING AND SHARING THE PLAN GOD HAS PUT IN PLACE!

Mixed Up? (part 3 of 3)
Remember the quote we first noted two days ago: “Most people tend to worship their work, to work at their play, and to play at their worship.” [source: bulletin clipping] Yes, we do live in a mixed up world. We have pondered the attitude toward work and worship, but what about the PLAY? Perhaps if work was as fun as PLAY it would not seem so much like work.
Just as all PLAY and no work generally proves to have a negative impact on economic stability and fails to contribute toward making something useful of the life, so also all work and no PLAY can adversely impact the life in many ways: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. For the Jews, God had established the Sabbath law to protect man from himself by providing a needed opportunity for rest. (Exodus 20:8-10; 34:21) It was the same for everyone as well as for the livestock and it mattered not what the season. Rest is a needed thing. Remember Jesus even withdrew at times from His work to recuperate and encouraged the disciples to do the same. (i.e. Luke 5:15-16 and Mark 6:30-32)
The original idea of the word “recreation” had to do with “re-creation”; that is providing refreshment or renewal to mind and body. There can be something therapeutic about it. However, we must still bear in mind what we choose to do is to be pleasing to God.
Paul urged those at Corinth…
“So, whether you eat or drink, or WHATEVER YOU DO, DO ALL TO THE GLORY OF GOD.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)
That category of “whatever you do” is a large one. It can be filled with a wide variety of things. In connection with Paul’s statement here we find mentioned even things relating to the physical life; “eat and drink.” The “whatever” however is to be matched up with being done “to the glory of God.” Therefore, in keeping from getting our work, worship, AND PLAY from getting mixed up, may it all be done in a manner that is wholesome and glorifying to God in all aspects.
Have a great day KNOWING LIVING FOR GOD HELPS KEEP ALL THINGS PROPERLY ORDERED!

Mixed Up? (part 2 of 3)
Remember the quote in yesterday’s focus: “Most people tend to worship their work, to work at their play, and to play at their worship.” [source: bulletin clipping] We truly do live in a mixed up world. Today let us consider our WORSHIP.
To play at something is to not take it seriously, but to rather view it as either merely recreational, something we can take or leave, or approached half-heartedly. How sad that some make a game out of that which should be given serious consideration. This is no more true than when it comes to our WORSHIP. When we do not approach the WORSHIP OF GOD in a sincere manner it is a reflection that we do not view God in such a way. Though unlike the world we may refrain from using the name of God in a flippant or irreverent manner, we could still be guilty of going through the motions and sounds of WORSHIP without it being pleasing to God. Such was the charge against Israel at the time of the prophet Amos. (Amos 5:21-24) We would do well to remember how God dealt swiftly with Nadab and Abihu when they substituted what He had not commanded. (Leviticus 10:1-2) Also consider the charge Jesus levied against the Jewish leaders who seemed to play games with regard to what really constituted a binding oath. (Matthew 23:16-22)
With regard to WORSHIP, Jesus told the woman at the well…
“God is spirit, and those who worship him MUST WORSHIP IN SPIRIT AND TRUTH.” (John 4:24 ESV)
To WORSHIP God “in spirit” implies it must be more than mechanical thoughtless activity. Besides the outward being, the inward being is to be involved.
To WORSHIP “in truth” implies there is a right way and a wrong way to worship. The ways in which God has told us to WORSHIP must be followed and if we begin to make substitutions we risk joining the category of Nadab and Abihu. Jesus quoted Isaiah in pointing to vain worship associated with the “teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” (Mark 7:6-7) Let us search the Scriptures to make certain our WORSHIP is based on the authority of God rather than merely the traditions of men.
Remembering again Paul’s appeal to the church at Rome…
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to PRESENT YOUR BODIES AS A LIVING SACRIFICE, holy and acceptable to God, WHICH IS YOUR SPIRITUAL WORSHIP.” (Romans 12:1 ESV)
If we truly love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27) it will be reflected in the way we approach God and also our conduct in daily living. May our life clearly reveal our WORSHIP to God is not a game, but rather be marked by an earnestness to WORSHIP as He has commanded and to conduct our daily life in a manner that declares Him to truly be the Sovereign over our whole being.
Have a great day SINCERELY SEEKING TO PLEASE GOD WITH THE WHOLE LIFE!

Mixed Up? (part 1 of 3)
We live in a mixed up world. Priorities are out of order. Values have been inverted. There are even times when the scales of justice seem out of balance. Serious focus is often placed on the less urgent while the truly important goes neglected. Someone has expressed it in this way: “Most people tend to worship their work, to work at their play, and to play at their worship.” [source: bulletin clipping] Today consider the first portion of that quotation and Lord Willing we will consider the others over the next two days.
There are those in this world who view themselves as being defined by their WORK; it is the essence of who they are. Others get so focused on their WORK that they fail to acknowledge the contributions of others associated with it. It’s all about them and they will do whatever they can to get full credit for any successes that come about while blaming others for any failures.
It is good to be serious about our WORK, but we must also maintain a clear perspective of our own part among many and keep the attitude in check. Our WORK or the works of our hands are not to be worshiped though what we do may still be offered as worship to God.
When it comes to WORK, Paul exhorted slaves to possess the following perspective.
“(23) Whatever you do, WORK HEARTILY, AS FOR THE LORD and not for men, (24) knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV)
And with regard to life lived in general under the sun, Solomon urged…
“WHATEVER YOUR HAND FINDS TO DO, DO IT WITH YOUR MIGHT, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10 ESV)
Both of the these passages point toward a good WORK ethic and while Solomon noted this realm as the place and time for WORK, Paul directed the focus beyond the immediate benefit of service to others to the realization of it being done for Christ.
To worship what we do is just a step away from worshiping ourselves. What we do in the way of offering our lives as “living” sacrifices “holy and acceptable to God” -- that is “spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1 ESV) May we be actively doing WORKS pleasing to God and worthy of the life He has given us in which to do them.
Have a great day WORKING TO PLEASE THE GOD WE WORSHIP!

An Attention Getter!
Have you ever noticed when in a crowded mall or even a crowded room that when the cry “Mommy” is heard that most of the women will turn toward the direction from which the cry came? It seems the attention of even the mommies who no longer have small children are still responsive to the name. Motherhood is special. I believe there are things experienced by mommies that men may never fully understand. The name “Mommy” is sweet and can easily bring a smile to the faces of those who hear it. And because of the special bond between mother and child the name “Mommy” may never lose the tug at the heart and the power to turn the head.
After referring to the servant heart of Jesus and His willing obedience to the plan that brought about our salvation through His blood shed on the cross, Paul went on to state…
“(9) Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, (10) so that AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, (11) and every tongue confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)
“JESUS!” THE NAME that is exalted above all names. THE NAME that should tug at our heart. THE NAME that should always turn our attention toward Him. THE NAME to which every knee should bow.” “JESUS!” Doesn’t THE NAME have a sweetness to its sound? Isn’t it easily spoken with a smile? May the bond between us and “JESUS” made possible through the power of His blood never lose the power to draw our heart and head toward Him.
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING BY LIFE THE EXALTED NAME OF JESUS!

Rewarding Vision!
Rewards. Many people want credit cards that offer cash back rewards. They like purchases that reward them with more frequent flier miles. Some will do almost anything if there is a reward in it for them. However, could there be some rewards being overlooked in the process? Some people have discarded things of great value without realizing it and others have benefited in the finding. For example (as reported in the November 6, 1995 issue of “U.S. News & World Report”) a garbage truck driver in Peabody, Massachusetts once noticed in a garbage container a Wendy’s soft drink cup on which was a contest sticker. Having won a chicken sandwich the week before, he checked it hoping for some French fries or a soft drink. What he found instead was a sticker worth $200,000 toward the construction of a new home.
How true it is that what we get out of life depends a lot on what we are setting our eyes upon. That which some trash may be seen by others as a potential treasure. Also, what some treasure could possibly distract from that which truly should be treasured.
Consider the example of Moses. Imagine growing up in Pharaoh’s palace. Think of all the benefits that were his. How easy it all could have been allowed to distract him from how God would ultimately use him.
The Hebrew writer noted the following about Moses.
“(24) By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, (25) choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. (26) HE CONSIDERED THE REPROACH OF CHRIST GREATER WEALTH THAN THE TREASURES OF EGYPT, FOR HE WAS LOOKING TO THE REWARD.” (Hebrews 11:24-26 ESV)
Moses was described here as LOOKING WELL BEYOND what was immediately before him. He had his sights on a reward, but it was not the treasures of Egypt. In faith Moses LOOKED WELL BEYOND even the delivering of Israel from Egyptian bondage to blessings of the coming Messiah. He LOOKED BEYOND the visible to “him who is invisible.” (Hebrews 11:27) Faith seeing such as that has its reward from God.
Earlier in this chapter the Hebrew writer stated…
“And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God MUST BELIEVE that HE EXISTS AND that HE REWARDS THOSE WHO SEEK HIM.” (Hebrews 11:6 ESV)
Where have we set our focus? Are we so nearsighted that we are missing the real rewards God has in store for us? We will more easily resist the “pleasures of sin” and the “treasures of” this world when our eyes are fixed on the true rewards of God. His rewards may not be immediate, but they will ultimately come and will most assuredly be worth the wait. May we keep our focus on them as we press on in this realm.
Have a great day LIVING WITH A FARSIGHTED FAITH!

Even For Self!
I enjoy both listening to and playing music. Besides being a member of our community orchestra I recently had the opportunity to perform a couple pieces with a smaller musical ensemble and am presently working over music to be performed with a small chamber orchestra this coming Saturday. The music is wonderful, but it is also challenging and therefore besides the few group rehearsals, I must spend some individual time practicing. I thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to play a variety of types of music, but I also enjoy once a concert is over with. After that music has been perform I then have the time to just pull out my instruments and relax playing for my own enjoyment; not playing because I am under the pressure of preparing for a concert, but playing just for the personal benefit to me.
My perspective is similar when it comes to THE SCRIPTURES. I love all the opportunities I have to preach and teach. I also enjoy having the opportunity to listen to others sharing lessons from THE WORD. Though I enjoy my study time, I still feel the pressure of deadlines and the challenge of having lessons prepared with a flow that will make sense and be beneficial to others. I also recognize the awesome responsibility of being sure what I am sharing is GOD’S MESSAGE and not merely my own. And though I need these lessons as much as those with whom I share them, I also cherish the time when I am able to study not with lesson preparation in mind, but merely to fill myself.
James exhorted…
“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE IMPLANTED WORD, WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOULS.” (James 1:21 ESV)
The roots of GOD’S WORD need to grow deep within our life. As we study THE SCRIPTURES we need to be willing to take it within so that it can infiltrate and powerfully influence our whole life. Sharing the TRUTH OF GOD with others is what we have been called to do. However, we need to spend time filling ourselves as well. For me, working with music as a group is always enjoyable and teaching and studying with a group is always rewarding. Nevertheless I also feel the deep need for time spent being personally nourished by THE WORD.
If we only sufficed ourselves with the lessons taught publicly there could end up being many truths we would never come to grips with for our life. Reading through THE WORD regularly is the way to make certain we have not missed something and provides the opportunity to go a little deeper in a personal way. It is also the means of making sure whether or not what we are being taught is true. (note Acts 17:11) May we maintain a craving for that which will thoroughly nourish our souls and help us grow up in our salvation. (1 Peter 2:2) For our own sake we must be sure to set aside the time to do so regularly. Getting personal about getting into THE WORD is the means of getting it into us!
Have a great day READING THE SCRIPTURES FOR THE SOUL’S SAKE!

Resurrected Life!
Early on the first day of the week, the Easter Bunny came out of the tomb and saw the egg’s shadow and knew Spring was here. Now, you may be saying, “What?” The truth is there are a lot of mixed up focuses with regard to what has been called Easter. The thing we need to most focus on is what the Scriptures associate with the resurrection of Jesus and to do so not only for today, but every day.
While out walking yesterday morning I was listening to a religious radio station on which they kept referring to the weekend as “a resurrection weekend.” Praise God for the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb! But it is not simply about a weekend or about a day -- it’s actually all about LIFE! Jesus gave His LIFE on the cross for our sins, but that was not the end of the story. His resurrection is all about His power over death and the assurance of an ETERNAL LIFE for us. (1 Corinthians 6:14; 2 Corinthians 4:14)
Prior to Jesus’ death on the cross He encouraged the disciples with the words, “BECAUSE I LIVE, YOU ALSO WILL LIVE.” (John 14:19 ESV) Jesus directed their focus toward LIFE and the focus on Jesus is a focus on LIFE because without Him we would still be dead in our sins. (Ephesians 2:1-5)
When the women went to the tomb the angels asked, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5) Again their focus was directed toward LIFE. Jesus cannot be visited at a tomb because He lives and LIFE is exactly what Jesus came to provide; ABUNDANT LIFE for now (John 10:10) and for eternity.
Writing to the church at Colossae, Paul stated…
“having been buried with him in baptism, in which YOU WERE ALSO RAISED WITH HIM through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead.” (Colossians 2:12 ESV)
Is the power of our Lord’s resurrection seen in our daily LIFE? When we were united with Christ in baptism we were raised up with Him and it was so we could rise to “walk in NEWNESS OF LIFE” presently. (Romans 6:4) The resurrection of Jesus shouts loudly of the power of God to renew and sustain LIFE and to grant it beyond the grave.
How important is our focus on Jesus? John wrote…
“(11) And this is the testimony, that God gave us ETERNAL LIFE, and THIS LIFE IS IN HIS SON. (12) WHOEVER HAS THE SON HAS LIFE; WHOEVER DOES NOT HAVE THE SON OF GOD DOES NOT HAVE LIFE.” (1 John 5:11-12 ESV)
John alluded to no middle ground, but made it clear there is no LIFE without the Son. A focus on the Son of God is a focus about LIFE; a significance we need to help others see as well. May the truth of Jesus be seen in us as we strive to live a RESURRECTED LIFE every day of the year.
Have a great day LIVING LIFE FOR THE LIVING LORD!

Getting Through!
It appears that NOTHING is able to STAND IN THE WAY of the Lord getting through. When a crowd of people drove Jesus out of Nazareth and were ready to throw Him from the brow of a hill, He walked right through their midst. (Luke 4:29-30) When Jesus’ body was placed in a tomb, even a large stone rolled across its entrance (Matthew 27:60) and being sealed and guarded (Matthew 27:65-66) could not keep Him from getting through. And when the disciples were fearfully hiding behind a locked door, twice the Lord was still able to get through to be with them. (John 20:19-20 & 26)
Yes, it appears that NOTHING is able to STAND IN THE WAY of the Lord getting through, EXCEPT…! Unfortunately there seems to be at least one thing. With all the power of the Lord there remains the great challenge of the hardness of hearts.
When the disciples asked Jesus why He spoke in parables He responded…
“(14) Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. (15) For THIS PEOPLE’S HEART HAS GROWN DULL, and with THEIR EARS they can BARELY HEAR, and THEIR EYES THEY HAVE CLOSED, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’” (Matthew 13:14-15 ESV)
Perhaps there is no harder substance than that of a stubborn unbelieving heart! Such plagued the nation of Israel during the days of Moses. God’s prophets throughout the generations carried His message to such. Is it any surprise Jesus was faced with the same and that hardened hearts are still around today?
The Hebrew writer warned…
“(7) Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, (8) DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, (9) where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works (10) for forty years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART; they have not known my ways.’ (11) As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”” (Hebrews 2:7-11 ESV)
Then the Hebrew writer urged…
“(12) Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you AN EVIL, UNBELIEVING HEART, leading you to fall away from the living God. (13) But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ THAT NONE OF YOU MAY BE HARDENED BY THE DECEITFULNESS OF SIN. (14) For we share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” (Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV)
May we keep our hearts open and softened toward Jesus so that He can continually get through to us. Let us allow NOTHING TO STAND IN THE WAY of His truth and Will being taken to heart, enabling us to live pleasing to Him and one day be ushered into that eternal rest He has gone to prepare.
Have a great day MAINTAINING A PLIABLE HEART BEFORE THE LORD!

Not Even 2.54 Centimeters!
Have you ever known someone of whom you might state, “Give them 2.54 centimeters and they’ll take 1.609 kilometers”? Perhaps the metric measurement doesn’t have the same ring (or flow) to it as “Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile”, but the expression is actually the same. There are some people that if we give them EVEN A LITTLE ROOM they are likely to push the limit and completely take over. We should no more be on guard against such occurring than when it comes to the devil’s attempts to creep into our life. EVEN ONE SPECK of room is too much to allow him to gain control over!
Perhaps this is best illustrated by the following which I shared during one of our recent mid-week Bible studies. It was reportedly told by a Haitian preacher.
A certain man wanted to sell his house for $2,000. Another man wanted very badly to buy it, but because he was poor, he couldn’t afford the full price. After much bargaining, the owner agreed to sell the house for half the original price with just one stipulation: he would retain ownership of one small nail protruding from just over the door. After several years, the original owner wanted the house back, but the new owner was unwilling to sell. So the first owner went out, found the carcass of a dead dog, and hung it from the single nail he still owned. Soon the house became unlivable, and the family was forced to sell the house to the owner of the nail.
The point made by the Haitian preacher was, “If we leave the devil with even one small peg in our life, he will return to hang his rotting garbage on it, making it unfit for Christ’s habitation.”
There are various ways in which the devil may try to slip into our life. Since these ways can be quite subtle we must remain on guard. That includes not only things associated with our relationship to Christ, but also with one another.
Writing to the church at Ephesus, Paul urged…
“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (27) and GIVE NO OPPORTUNITY TO THE DEVIL.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)
Other translations end with “…do not give the devil a foothold.” (NIV), “…nor give place to the devil.” (NKJV), and “…neither give place to the devil.” (ASV) The Greek word is “topos” which was used with reference to an inhabited place such as a city, village, or district. This word was also used metaphorically for “the condition or station held by one in any company or assembly [as well as for] opportunity, power, [or] occasion for acting.” [Strong’s Lexicon]
Harboring anger within us is like hanging a welcome sign for the devil to come in to take up residence in our life. We need to fully surrender our life to Christ so as to LEAVE NO ROOM at all for the devil. NOT EVEN A LITTLE CORNER of our life is to be surrendered for the devil to inhabit. Not even a single nail is to be allowed on which to hang his stuff! For us to do so will only prove to be a hindrance and will ultimately leave our life uninhabitable for our Lord.
James exhorted…
“(7) SUBMIT yourselves therefore TO GOD. RESIST THE DEVIL, and he will flee from you. (8) DRAW NEAR TO GOD, and he will draw near to you. CLEANSE YOUR HANDS, you sinners, and PURIFY YOUR HEARTS, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8 ESV)
Do we need to do some housecleaning? If so, let us not waste any time. The sooner Christ and the Spirit of Truth take up residence in every room of our life the safer we will be.
Have a great day ALLOWING CHRIST TO OCCUPY EVERY CORNER OF YOUR LIFE!

Down To The Top!
“Getting to the bottom of things.” “Getting on top of things.” “Getting down to business.” “Climbing the ladder of success.” Each of these expressions has been associated with making progress in this world. However, that does not necessarily reflect the essence of success spiritually. As Jesus pointed out to His disciples, the way of the world and the way of His kingdom are quite the converse. (note Matthew 20:25-28) It actually takes going down to get to the top.
Every time I read John 13 I am impressed with the lesson the disciples needed to learn and that I must continually bear in mind as well. The twelve were in a special relationship with Jesus. They had been chosen to be equipped and given authority in furthering the kingdom Jesus came and established. What an honor! What glory! What a position to be given! However, there was an ATTITUDE OF SERVITUDE that marked the greatness they were to possess.
Jesus knew Who He was, the authority He had, and where He was going. (John 13:3) The disciples viewed Him as their Teacher and Lord. (John 13:13) However, it was He Who picked up the towel and one by one began washing the disciples’ feet. (John 13:4-11) On this occasion Jesus literally illustrated by His actions the point He tried to make in Matthew 20.
As Jesus called on the disciples to reflect on what had just happened, we read…
“(12) When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I HAVE DONE TO YOU? (13) You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. (14) IF I THEN, YOUR LORD AND TEACHER, HAVE WASHED YOUR FEET, YOU ALSO OUGHT TO WASH ONE ANOTHER’S FEET. (15) For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (16) Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. (17) IF YOU KNOW THESE THINGS, BLESSED ARE YOU IF YOU DO THEM.” (John 13:12-17 ESV)
Jesus wanted it to be noted that greatness is in PICKING UP THE TOWEL. It is not in being served, but in being willing TO SERVE. The way to the top is by means of bending down with a humble ATTITUDE OF SERVITUDE toward others. Jesus’ walk here on earth revealed there is no higher calling than that. May we be willing to do as He has done.
Have a great day MOVING TO GREATNESS THROUGH GIVING OF SELF!

I Know Where You Live!
“I know where you live!” Those words are sometimes said in a joking manner to convey, “If you pull that trick on me, I know where I can find you.” The expression has also been seriously used as somewhat of a threat to mean “If you don’t follow through I will come looking for you where you live and we’ll resolve the matter there and then!” There may be some people whom we don’t want to know where we live either because they could be a threat to us or become a nuisance. Then there are those whom we appreciate they do know where we live and WELCOME THEIR CONNECTION with us at any time.
Though there were some in the church in Pergamum who were holding to teachings other than the truth of God (Revelation 2:14-15) and needed to repent for it (Revelation 2:16), note how the message of the Lord to this church began.
“I KNOW WHERE YOU DWELL, where Satan’s throne is. YET YOU HOLD FAST MY NAME, AND YOU DID NOT DENY YOUR FAITH IN ME even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.” (Revelation 2:13 ESV)
The encouragement for these Christians was that there was awareness in Heaven of the circumstances that challenged them where they lived, but also of their faithfulness in the midst of those trials. Even in the face of one among them being killed, they held steadfast to the NAME OF THE LORD and did not deny their faith.
Perhaps we think the immorality and wickedness where we live is bad, but consider living in a place described as being “where Satan’s throne is.” If this reference to “Satan’s throne” and his dwelling being there refers to the temple dedicated to the Roman Emperor Caesar that had been erected in Pergamum (also known as Pergamos) there would have been the demand to refer to Caesar as Lord. However, these Christians held fast to the NAME OF THE LORD and would have only been willing to say that JESUS IS LORD. Such would have created a real test for them, one these spoken of here were apparently passing.
Yes, the Lord knows where we live and is fully aware of what goes on around us. He is also aware of how seriously we consider His LORDSHIP in our life. May we be encouraged that no matter what might be going on around us, as we continue to allow JESUS TO BE LORD of our life, His desire is to ultimately bring us to eternally live with Him. (note John 14:3) Like those at Pergamum, let us also hold fast to His Name.
Have a great day WELCOMING A STEADFAST CONNECTION WITH JESUS!

Shocking Ignorance!
I love reading the story of the early life of Samuel. I had the opportunity to read it again yesterday morning. He had parents (Elkanah and Hannah) who were faithful in their worship to God. Longing for a child, on their annual journey to worship and offer a sacrifice at Shiloh (1 Samuel 1:3), Hannah prayed to the One SHE KNEW could grant her request for a son. If God would grant her wish she was even willing to commit him to the service of the Lord. (1:11) When Eli the priest saw her lips moving but heard nothing, he thought she had been drinking and rebuked her. (1:12-14) However, after Hannah explained how she had been actually pouring her soul out before the Lord (1:15-16) Eli told her, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” (1:17) Then the Scriptures tell us Hannah’s face was no longer sad. (1:18) Eli’s words seem to have encouraged her FAITH IN GOD to fulfill the request. When Samuel was born, his mother was faithful to her promise and he entered the service of assisting Eli and his sons (Hophni and Phinehas) and Samuel eventually became known among the people as a prophet of God. (3:20)
Though we may enjoy the story of Samuel there was another story line unfolding at this time; a story of a rather sad nature having to do with the character of the spiritual leadership at this time. Eli’s sons were not carrying out their priestly duties with the dignity and holiness God had commanded. (read 2:13-17 and 22-25) What was at the root of their wickedness?
We read…
“Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. THEY DID NOT KNOW THE LORD.” (1 Samuel 2:12 ESV)
A sad reality is how it is possible to be involved in all kinds of “religious” activities without truly KNOWING THE LORD. Just as that was true during the days of Samuel it is also true today. If GOD IS TRULY KNOWN He will be responded to in reverence and fear as the Sovereign who holds eternity in His hands. For all God’s guidance and gracious provision He will be responded to in loving obedience. And to KNOW HIM is to trust in Him to sustain us through the challenges of life.
In referring to KNOWING OUR LORD, John wrote…
“(3) And by this we KNOW THAT WE HAVE COME TO KNOW him, if we KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. (4) Whoever says ‘I KNOW HIM’ but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, (5) but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may be sure that we are in him: (6) whoever says he abides in him OUGHT TO WALK IN THE SAME WAY IN WHICH HE WALKED.” (1 John 2:3-6 ESV)
Some speak lies while others live them. What about us? Do we truly KNOW GOD? That doesn’t mean we know everything about God, but reflects we have a proper view toward Him and a right relationship with Him. Do we truly KNOW THE LORD JESUS? TO KNOW HIM is to obey Him and strive to continually walk as He walked. May this TRUE KNOWLEDGE be made clearly evident in our daily life.
Have a great day WITH GOD’S LOVE BEING PERFECTED IN US!

Little Creature / Big Lesson!
We can learn by listening up, looking up, and even looking around us. There are great lessons that can be learned from among the ordinary and minute things of life. Even Solomon directed the attention toward the observation of a tiny creature of God from which wisdom could be gained.
Solomon urged…
“Go to THE ANT, O sluggard; CONSIDER HER WAYS, AND BE WISE.” (Proverbs 6:6 ESV)
Later in the book of Proverbs we find that Agur also made reference to the ant and the preparations it focused on making. (Proverbs 30:25) Perhaps you have watched them and marveled at their busyness and even the size of objects carried. Though they are tiny creatures I have even seen where their continual back and forth travel has worn down a path through the grass.
One of the members of our congregation has been battling some tiny sugar ants in their home. It seems that once these ants FIND SOMETHING GOOD they don’t keep it to themselves, but immediately BROADCAST IT to the rest of their community and the trail begins. Ant after ant forms a continual trail to the newly found food source and once the march has begun it is difficult to stop.
Is there a busyness that marks our life? Like the ant are we busy about the preparations we need to be making, especially those of a spiritual nature? Also, having found SOMETHING GOOD -- the “true “bread of heaven” (John 6:32-35) that brings complete nourishment for the soul -- are we content with dining ourselves or are we eager to BROADCAST IT to our community as well? May we go to the ant and become wise by considering in her ways a lesson of eternal significance for ourselves and those around us.
Have a great day SHARING THE GOOD NEWS WITH OTHERS!

Two Days In One?
During a conversation I had with someone this past week, they bemoaned the fact that “April Fool’s Day” and “Palm Sunday” were falling on the same day. Granted these two are marked on the calendar and the focuses on both are far from being similar, the truth is that both are days placed on the calendar with their observances based upon human origin. Though “Palm Sunday” is focused on the remembrance of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem prior to His arrest and crucifixion, the day itself and many practices associated with it have been set in place by the authority of men rather than God.
When did these two days begin to be observed? Not during the days of Christ or the Apostles. April Fool’s Day is thought to have originated during the 1500’s with a focus toward those who did not follow the change to the Gregorian calendar and pranks such as sending gifts to celebrate the beginning of the New Year on April first (instead of January first) was the fun some had at the expense of others. However there are various other reasons the encyclopedia provides for the observance of this day in various countries during that same century. The customs associated with Palm Sunday are generally traced back to the fourth century AD.
It is foolishness to not accept that which is the crux of the Gospel message: Christ’s death, burial and resurrection which Paul referred to as being of first importance. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) Every Sunday as we partake of the Lord’s Supper (the memorial Jesus Himself instituted as the means for remembering Him) we are proclaiming the SIGNIFICANCE of His death and are to do so until He comes again. (1 Corinthians 11:26) The SIGNIFICANCE we might draw from the account in the Gospels of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem is that He is most worthy of the praise offered to Him.
In John’s account we read…
“(12) The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. (13) So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ‘HOSANNA! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, EVEN THE KING OF ISRAEL!’ (14) And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, (15) ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ (16) His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.” (John 12:12-16 ESV)
As Jesus was entering Jerusalem on this occasion He was being received as we also ought to receive Him. We are blessed in believing in the One Who came in the Name of the Lord to redeem us by His blood given on the cross. Jesus was also fulfilling prophecy (Zechariah 9:9) which confirmed Him to be the One in Whom we are to believe. Does our life help others see how SIGNIFICANT Jesus is to us?
The Scriptures address the tragedy of foolishness (i.e. Psalm 49:10; Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 3:35; Romans 1:21-23) and there is no greater folly than to mock God (Psalm 14:1) and not accept His Son. (1 Corinthians 1:20-24; 1 John 5:12) Believing in God and the Son Whom He sent, we ought to uphold the worthiness of Jesus to receive our DAILY PRAISE. Every day in Him is a day to wisely live for His glory! May it continually be so!
Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR THE ONE WHO CAME IN HIS NAME!
