Wake Up! (Part 1 of 2)

When the alarm went off this morning, were you eager to get up? If someone turned on the light, did you pull the covers up over your head or scream for the light to be turned off because your eyes were not ready to see it? There is light some in this world do not like because they want to remain in the darkness. (note John 3:19-20) Paul reminded those at Ephesus they themselves had once lived in darkness. ( Ephesians 5:8) Having now come into the LIGHT OF CHRIST, Paul urged them to continue to “walk as children of light.” ( Ephesians 5:8)

As Paul continued, we read…
“(11) Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. (12) For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. (13) But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, (14) for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘AWAKE, O SLEEPER, AND ARISE FROM THE DEAD, AND CHRIST WILL SHINE ON YOU.’” ( Ephesians 5:11-14 ESV)

There is a very real sense in which this world needs to wake up and no longer be content with walking in darkness. Some need to wake up to the fact there are absolutes regarding that which is “good and right and true” ( Ephesians 5:9), who in the name of “enlightenment” appear to be accepting, tolerating and even condoning that which should actually be seen as deeds of darkness. Rather than going along with what is pleasing to the world there is the need to acknowledge the LIGHT OF THE LORD so as to be able to discern what is pleasing to Him. ( Ephesians 5:10)

Just like pulling the covers over one’s eyes does not change the fact the light has been turned on or the sun has risen, so closing the eyes to the truths of God does not change the fact the LIGHT OF THE SON has risen and His Lordship is to be acknowledged. Though it should be done in a gentle and loving manner (i.e. Ephesians 4:15; 1 Peter 3:15-16) , let us strive to wake up those around us to the true blessing living in the LIGHT OF CHRIST is for the present and the eternity to come.
