God's Provision! (part 2 of 4)
Noting again the text we began with yesterday…
“(3) My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD OF HOSTS CARES FOR HIS FLOCK, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. (4) FROM HIM SHALL COME THE CORNERSTONE, from him the TENT PEG, from him the BATTLE BOW, from him every RULER -- all of them together.” ( Zechariah 10:3-4 ESV)
Yesterday we considered the importance and STABILITY associated with a “cornerstone”; the first of four things mentioned that would be provided by the “Lord of Hosts.” Today, let us consider the “tent peg.”
Tent pegs can be easily overlooked. They are small and off to the sides and because they are sometimes overlooked, they can be tripped on. However, they are very important. With older tent styles, the pegs were necessary to help hold the walls out, thus providing room within the tent. Even though the dome tent style popular today can be free standing, the pegs (or stakes) are still important for ANCHORING the tent to keep it from blowing away in the wind. The poles and rods may help the tent to stand up, but the tent pegs pull the structure tight and ANCHOR IT IN PLACE.
The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(17) So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, (18) so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE SET BEFORE US. (19) We have this as a sure and STEADFAST ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, A HOPE that enters into the inner place BEHIND THE CURTAIN, (20) WHERE JESUS HAS GONE as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” ( Hebrews 6:17-20 ESV)
Without our life properly ANCHORED or STAKED DOWN, there is much in this life that can cause us to be blown over and tossed about. Is our life SECURELY ANCHORED in the hope that only God can offer through Jesus Christ? Are we WELL GROUNDED in the truths of God’s Word and the promises that are ours in Jesus Christ? This is the provision God has made for us to enjoy STABILITY even in this realm. Our life might look good, but if it is not SECURELY STAKED DOWN in Christ we will not be able to withstand the storms of this life. It is in Jesus we can find the hope that lifts us above the despair experienced by the world. As long as we are in the “tent of this body” ( 2 Corinthians 5:1 & 4; 2 Peter 1:13) may Jesus be the peg that securely holds our life in place.
Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR THE STEADFAST HOPE IN CHRIST!
Carl
