Imagining!

Some people have very vivid imaginations. From their distinct mental images come masterful works of art that can seem so real we can almost feel drawn right into the picture. These imaginative minds also produce novels that can draw the reader into feeling they are right there in the midst of the story. The imaginations of people have brought forth inventions that have simplified and made better some aspects of life. Then there are some who have very strange and even morbid imaginations.

When it comes to imagining, some of those images may never materialize and others may be even more impressive than what was imagined. To spend a little time dreaming and imagining can help encourage us to press on because of the possibilities that could materialize. We also may be reminded in the process that there are still many unknowns relating to life. How vivid of an imagination do we possess? What sort of things do we frequently find ourselves picturing in our mind that encourage us that life is worth living?

Note what Paul stated in his letter to the church at Ephesus.
“(20) Now to him who is ABLE TO DO FAR MORE ABUNDANTLY THAN ALL THAT WE ASK OR THINK, according to the power at work within us, (21) to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV)

The word translated “think” comes from a Greek word “noeo” which means to perceive with the mind (Gk. “nous”), to think about, or ponder. [source: Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words] It is translated in the New International Version as “imagine”. Though we may try to imagine, Paul stated that our God is able to do FAR MORE ABUNDANTLY THAN ALL we might think. Our imagination is no match for the VAST MIND OF GOD and all that He might have in mind for us now and for eternity. Paul also stated the power behind that ability of God is “at work within us.” How’s that for a thought to motivate us for pressing on in our relationship to Him? We can only imagine how much we will someday be amazed!

Have a great day KNOWING WITH GOD ARE ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES!

What the Doctor Ordered!

While Jesus was in Jerusalem He had the following encounter.
"(2) Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades. (3) In these lay a multitude of invalids -- blind, lame, and paralyzed. (5) One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. (6) When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "DO YOU WANT TO BE HEALED?'" (John 5:2-6 ESV)

Does that sound like a strange question? Wasn't that why the man was there? It is possible for one to become so accustomed to their malady (affliction, ailment, or problem) that they really don't want healing. This man, having been in his condition for "a long time", could have begun to view it as a means of excusing himself from some of life's responsibilities. His infirmity could have presented a seemingly reasonable excuse for idleness. Perhaps one could even begin to find enjoyment in the attention such a condition might bring.

There are some diseases that are incurable not for lack of drugs or methods of treatment, but because of an unwillingness to follow what the PHYSICIAN PRESCRIBES. One of the things that has to be frustrating to doctors is when they have patients who will not follow the PRESCRIBED TREATMENT for what ails them. Detailed programs of treatment, therapy, diet, or follow-up visits are ignored and the patient does not get any better.

How many struggle with sin and refuse to come to the Great Physician who holds the key to remedying the sin-sick soul? Some don't want to give up the sin. They may dislike the discomfort of the consequences, but don't want to give up the lifestyle either. One of the greatest spiritual ailments is the lack of recognizing that one is sick and in need of healing. (note Luke 5:30-32) Are we willing to follow the Great Physician's orders?

This man was healed. He was obedient to what the Lord prescribed. When Jesus told him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk", that's what he did. (John 5:8-9) We would also do well to GET UP and just FOLLOW the directions the LORD HAS PRESCRIBED.

Solomon exhorted.
"(7) Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and TURN AWAY FROM EVIL. (8) IT WILL BE HEALING TO YOUR FLESH AND REFRESHMENT TO YOUR BONES."(Proverbs 3:7-8 ESV)

Have a great day FOLLOWING THE DIVINE SPECIALIST'S ORDERS!

The Silent!

[01/29/2007 “teEn-MAIL”]

THE SILENT!

It is amazing what we can hear when we are silent. Wind chimes in the distance. Frogs croaking. Birds chirping. Whispers. Water dripping. Even the sound of snowflakes hitting the frozen ground. Etc. Giving a chance for these sounds to be heard might FILL US WITH WONDER regarding God’s creation and all the marvelous design that went into it.

God, speaking through His prophet Habakkuk, stated…
“(19) Woe to him who says to a wooden thing, Awake; to A SILENT STONE, Arise! CAN THIS TEACH? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it. (20) But THE LORD IS IN HIS HOLY TEMPLE; let all the earth KEEP SILENCE BEFORE HIM.” (Habakkuk 2:19-20 ESV)

Note the contrast given between that which is no god and the One Who is the Sovereign God and Creator of all life? The false is what is made by the hands of men while God is the Maker of man. The stone is SILENT and cannot teach, but God is the Omniscient (all knowing) One Who teaches everything that is righteous. The false has no breath in it, but it is God Who breathed life into mortal man (Genesis 2:7) and breathed life into His Word as well (2 Timothy 3:16). The false, which can only be silent, must be spoken for. However, when it comes to the God Who has spoken, we would be wise to be SILENT before Him so that we can RECEIVE THE INSTRUCTION WE NEED. He need not be told to awaken because He never sleeps or slumbers. (Psalm 121:4) It is us who must remain awake to the WONDERS He has chosen to reveal through His Creation and His Word!

“Keep SILENCE”! According to Strong’s lexicon the Hebrew implies hush, keep silence, be silent, hold peace, hold tongue, be still. Are we remaining quiet enough to hear (take to heart) what He has chosen to reveal?

After God had spoken to Job we read…
“(3) Then Job answered the Lord and said: (4) ‘Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I LAY MY HAND ON MY MOUTH. (5) I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.’” (Job 40:3-5 ESV)

Solomon stated there is a time for silence and a time for speaking. (Ecclesiastes 3:7) Do we know the difference? Are we being still enough before God that we can be FILLED WITH THE WONDER of His Wisdom and Power? We don’t command God -- He commands us! Let us keep listening to Him.

Have a great day BLESSED IN KNOWING WHEN TO KEEP SILENCE!

Who You Gonna Tell?

There are times when someone bemoans a situation or complains about the way things are going, only to be met by someone saying, “Tell someone who cares.” Though this response may at times be used in jest, the statement implies, “I really don’t care to hear about your problems. Save your sob story for someone else.” Such is not a very compassionate response and though these specific words may not be used, the sentiment is still often conveyed through a refusal to offer a sincere listening ear or a little extra time to those who are struggling.

Peter encouraged…
“(6) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, (7) CASTING ALL YOUR ANXIETIES ON HIM, BECAUSE HE CARES FOR YOU.” (1 Peter 5:6-7 ESV)

Though it is a great source of strength to receive encouragement and comfort from others when going through trials -- and we should be willing to extend it (note 2 Corinthians 1:3-4) when such occasions arise -- let us always remember the truth that GOD CARES and we can cast all our anxieties before Him at any time. Others may become weary of our coming, but God is always willing to listen to us as we pour out our hearts before Him. As our Heavenly Father CARED enough to send His Son into this world to provide our eternal salvation, how much more does HE CARE to “with him graciously give us all things!” (Romans 8:32 ESV)

For us TO CARE and truly be compassionate toward others is a very godly trait and should be a mark of our genuineness as Christians. CARING comes from a loving heart and Jesus referred to love for one another as a mark of discipleship to Him. (John 13:35)

May we find comfort in knowing how much GOD CARES for us. Then, to reveal how much we appreciate His mindfulness, let us develop a CARING ATTITUDE toward those who are around us.

Have a great day LEARNING THE LIKENESS OF THE GREATEST LISTENER!

Naked Truth!

The naked truth of our lives. God knows it. Everything is “naked and exposed” before Him. (Hebrews 4:13 ESV) It matters not how or with what we try to cloak ourselves, He knows what truly lies beneath. The pauper could appear as a prince and the prince could in reality be the pauper. It is not the clothes that make the man (or woman), but the substance of the life properly lived.

Someone has said, “Many professing Christians sing, ‘I’m a child of the King,’ but they live impoverished lives.” [source: “sentence sermons”] Do we make the claim, but do not live according to the Name? Are we truly what others are led to believe or are we merely putting on a good show and have maybe even become self-deceived?

Note the warning to the church at Laodicea.
“(15) I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! (16) So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. (17) For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, NOT REALIZING THAT YOU ARE WRETCHED, PITIABLE, POOR, BLIND, AND NAKED.” (Revelation 3:15-17 ESV)

They made the claim of being rich and in need of nothing when in reality they were spiritual bankrupt. Perhaps both they themselves and the world considered them rich. It is possible to be well off physically and appear to have a lot going for us while in reality be impoverished spiritually? However, it is also possible for the converse to be true.

In contrast, note the picture of the church at Smyrna.
“I know your tribulation and your poverty (BUT YOU ARE RICH) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” (Revelation 2:9 ESV)

God knows the reality and it is important for us to see it as well! Do we recognize how RICH we are IN CHRIST and how poor we would be without Him? In Him we have the RICHES OF GRACE (Ephesians 2:7), RICHES OF UNDERSTANDING (Colossians 2:2), and RICHES described as being UNSEARCHABLE. (Ephesians 3:8) It is in Christ we can be enriched with EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING. (Ephesians 1:3) Remember Jesus’ admonition regarding what profit is there for one to gain the whole world and lose their own soul! (Matthew 16:26) The road to true wealth begins in the willingness to deny self and follow Jesus. (Matthew 16:24) May we continually bear in mind where TRUE WEALTH is found.

Have a great day TRULY LIVING AS A ROYAL CHILD OF THE KING!

Being Challenged Again!

Sometimes we may sense our spirituality is going well while at other times feel we are failing miserably. We must always be on guard against feeling we have finally arrived and no longer need to be watchful because such a FOCUS will set us up to fall. (note 1 Corinthians 10:12) We must always remain alert to what is going on WITHIN US! There are also times when we clearly see God is gaining victories in our life and then other times feel like the devil is winning. Perhaps the struggle we experience is like the one Paul described where we again and again find ourselves doing the very things we don’t want to do. (Romans 7:15-20) Sin is so close to us in this life and we may often find ourselves struggling to keep THE FOCUS where it ought to be. This difficulty in maintaining a proper FOCUS is sometimes due to things we see going on around us and we feel the pressure of peers and struggle to remain steadfast in our surrender to the Lord’s Will.

James described the process of sin and temptation as follows:
“(13) Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. (14) But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed BY HIS OWN DESIRE. (15) Then DESIRE when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:13-15 ESV)

One of our great needs is to keep our desires in check. The desire for the things of God must keep growing in order to push out sinful and worldly desires. We must therefore put forth effort to continually FOCUS on the right things. If certain acquaintances, environments, and situations continue to move the FOCUS away from the Will of God, if at all possible these must be avoided. We may not be able to completely remove our life from all of these, but when it comes to where we choose to be, may those choices be made wisely for our soul’s sake.

Sometimes we can’t help seeing impure things, but it is our choice if we take a second look! Also, thoughts can be like birds that we are unable to keep from landing on our heads, but we can keep them from nesting there. We can’t always stop some thoughts from coming into our minds, but we can refuse to allow them to remain. Reading our Bible, quoting certain passages of Scripture from memory, or shifting the focus to prayer at such times can help us push ungodly thoughts from our mind.

As Paul urged the Philippian brethren…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is TRUE, whatever is HONORABLE, whatever is JUST, whatever is PURE, whatever is LOVELY, whatever is COMMENDABLE, if there is any EXCELLENCE, if there is anything WORTHY OF PRAISE, THINK ABOUT THESE THINGS.” (Philippians 4:8 ESV)

If the thoughts (from which stem our actions) cannot be placed in those categories they need to be forced out of our minds. If there is a specific thing that is challenging us perhaps even an accountability partner would be a good idea for checking in on how the battle is going and being encouraged in maintaining a proper FOCUS.

Remember Paul’s encouragement to the Christians at Corinth.
“No TEMPTATION has overtaken you that is not COMMON TO MAN. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation HE WILL ALSO PROVIDE THE WAY OF ESCAPE, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)

We all face temptations of one kind or another. The challenge is not unique to any one of us. We are not alone in the struggle. However, we must accept responsibility for where we allow our FOCUS to remain and use the “way of escape” the Lord provides. He provides, but will not drag us through it. Let us also trust in His forgiveness as we strive to live life surrendered to His Will.

Have a great day WITH GOD’S DESIRES BECOMING MORE AND MORE OUR OWN!

Reputation And Character!

Reputation can precede us, whether that be good or bad. However, when we have connected and interacted with others it is character that usually becomes evident. The church at Sardis had a reputation of being alive, however, the reality of their character was that they were dead! (Revelation 3:1) The problem was their works were not found to be complete. (Revelation 3:2)

Though reputation may precede us, what is the true essence that TRAILS BEHIND US? What is left IN THE WAKE OF OUR LIFE as we are passing through?

Later in Revelation John recorded…
“And I heard a voice from heaven saying, ‘Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, FOR THEIR DEEDS FOLLOW THEM!’” (Revelation 14:13 ESV)

May we continually strive to possess genuine godly character that produces good works. These works are not to be held ahead of us as a title, but TRAIL BEHIND us as a testimony to our character and conduct. A time of rest is coming, but now is the time for pressing on, LEAVING A TRAIL of godly works behind us. May the evidence of our living for the Lord become clear to those with whose lives we come into contact.

Have a great day LEAVING A GODLY IMPRESSION WITH OTHERS!

Appreciative Giving! (part 2 of 2)

Yesterday we noted someone’s statement that “When it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing.” What stops us from giving at times? Is it that we feel we couldn’t do without? Could it be a lack of receptiveness to needs around us? Do we view others as undeserving? (Have we deserved the blessings of God?) Or is it a preference for giving only when it is noticed by others? WHOSE EYES do we want opened to what we give?

Note the attention Jesus stated should be sought.
“(1) BEWARE OF PRACTICING your righteousness before other people in order TO BE SEEN by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. (2) Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (3) But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, (4) so that your giving may be in secret. And YOUR FATHER WHO SEES IN SECRET WILL REWARD YOU.” (Matthew 6:1-4)

Perhaps we could put Jesus’ exhortation in terms of resisting the tendency to “blow our own horn” or “flashing the cash.” Jesus stated our giving is to be ultimately for the EYES OF GOD. He is also the One Who will reward us for what we have given. Is our attitude right? Do we give because we appreciate how much God has already given us? Even the smallest gifts -- such as a cup of water (Matthew 10:42) -- that meet a need will not go without their reward.

Simply because others see or know about our giving will not negate our gift unless that is what our desire is all about. May our giving be a genuine display to God that we appreciate every blessing He has granted us. God appreciates and will take note of such giving.

Have a great day KNOWING WHAT GOD NOTICES AND REWARDS!

Appreciative Giving! (part 1 of 2)

Giving! When we do it we usually feel good, especially when we know what we have given is appreciated. We should recognize we are in a blessed position when we have something we can share with others whether that be of our money or our time. Someone has noted, “When it comes to giving, some people stop at nothing.” I know that is a bit of a twist on the expression to “stop at nothing”, but it is true that some people do stop before the giving even begins.

Note Solomon’s description of such a one.
“Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who BOASTS OF A GIFT HE DOES NOT GIVE.” (Proverbs 25:14 ESV)

Some will eat up the attention given them when they boast of gifts they could give, but where is the benefit and blessing when there is no FOLLOW THROUGH? In such a case it appears the appreciation is in the attention received rather than in recognizing the blessing of having something to give. As Paul spoke to the Ephesian elders he quoted the Lord as having said, “It is MORE BLESSED TO GIVE than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) Do we merely appreciate the attention others might give us or do we instead have a sincere appreciation for the fact we are blessed enough to have something to give?

In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth, he urged them to FOLLOW THROUGH in what they had earlier committed to give. (2 Corinthians 8:10-11) It appears that though we are the one to decide how much (2 Corinthians 9:7) the expectation is that we will give. May we experience the blessing the FOLLOW THROUGH of giving brings.

Have a great day PULLING THE STOPS OUT OF OUR GIVING!

The Song We Sing!

Some people go through life singing their own praises. They bolster themselves by a high ESTIMATION OF SELF, sometimes even putting others down in the process. Someone has said, “He who pitches too high won’t get through his song.” [source: “sentence sermons”] I know the strain of trying to sing a song that has been pitched too high. Perhaps the author of that quote was picturing the person who has such a high ESTIMATION of themselves that even they can’t truly live up to it.

Paul warned…
“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you NOT TO THINK OF HIMSELF MORE HIGHLY THAN HE OUGHT TO THINK, but to THINK WITH SOBER JUDGMENT, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” (Romans 12:3 ESV)

How well are we doing at maintaining a SOBER (sound or clear minded) VIEW OF SELF. To think of ourselves more highly than we ought can lead to a terrible fall. (note 1 Corinthians 10:12) To honestly consider the growth that needs to take place in our life and how far from the goal we are can be SOBERING. We should be encouraged by progress we have made, but not satisfied with where we are spiritually.

We would also be wise to guard against the other extreme. I know I have lowered the key of songs at times in order to make them easier for me to sing. However, when it comes to our conduct we should not lower God’s standard for living just to make it easier to live up to. Such a melody may be appealing to the world, but it will be noise to the ears of God.

By Who’s pitch are we striving to live our life? May we accept God’s key so that the song of our life will be practiced in tune with how He has written the music.

Present Help!

In the Psalms we read the encouraging statement…
“God is our refuge and strength, a VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE.” (Psalm 46:1 ESV)

Throughout the Scriptures we see God GETTING people out of trouble. However, not only is God a “present help in trouble”, but also a great help in KEEPING us out of trouble. Remember, both Jonah (Jonah 1) and Paul (Acts 27) found themselves in storms of which God safely delivered them, but we should also bear in mind it was different circumstances that got them there. Paul was being taken as a prisoner to Rome to stand trial and offered advice that could have spared the physical losses that were suffered. (note Acts 27:21-26) Jonah on the other hand could have avoided his trouble had he been obedient to God in the first place and he did acknowledge being the reason for the storm. (Jonah 1:12)

Though we may rightfully praise God for His ability and willingness to deliver us from even the messes our own choices get us into, shouldn’t we prefer to KEEP FROM THEM if at all possible? Is God viewed merely as our panic button in times of trouble or is He kept in view as the GUIDE FOR OUR LIFE so that we can be spared some of the unnecessary shipwrecks life’s voyage may otherwise bring. Many, through following their own ways, have “shipwrecked their faith” (1 Timothy 1:19) and their life.

We will not be spared all of life’s challenges. However, by PRESENTLY FOCUSING on the GUIDANCE GOD OFFERS there are many “storms” and situations of running our life aground that we will avoid. Let us accept God’s help “before” trouble so that our voyage may be kept safely on course.

Have a great day OF SMOOTHER SAILING!

God's Provision! (part 4 of 4)

Oh to have some stability for life. There are many nations that continue in chaos, unrest and upheaval because of the constant shifting of the powers over them. Governments change, policies change, economy is affected, and varying other aspects of life are significantly impacted. Something more CONSTANT is needed; a GOVERNING POWER that remains in place to bring order and stability to life.

Once more, reading the key text we began with for this series…
“(3) My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD OF HOSTS CARES FOR HIS FLOCK, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. (4) FROM HIM SHALL COME THE CORNERSTONE, from him the TENT PEG, from him the BATTLE BOW, from him every RULER -- all of them together.” (Zechariah 10:3-4 ESV)

Those who were to be leaders of God’s “flock” were not doing a very good job, but God would provide. God encouraged His people regarding leaders who would come from Him because He knew (and knows) how much good leadership is needed. He also had in mind the ultimate SOVEREIGNTY He would send in whom would be found the truest sense of peace and stability.

It was prophesied first by Jacob as he spoke to his sons prior to his death, that
“The SCEPTER SHALL NOT DEPART FROM JUDAH, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the people.” (Genesis 49:10 ESV)

Much later, in the prophecy of Micah we read…
“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be RULER IN ISRAEL, WHOSE ORIGIN IS FROM OF OLD, FROM ANCIENT DAYS.” (Micah 5:2 ESV)

Micah’s prophecy definitely pointed to the eternal One, our Lord Jesus Christ who came and in Whose hand the “scepter” of authority has been placed. Is that authority being recognized?

The Hebrew writer (quoting from Psalm 45:6-7) noted…
“(8) But OF THE SON HE SAYS, ‘YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, THE SCEPTER OF UPRIGHTNESS IS THE SCEPTER OF YOUR KINGDOM. (9) You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.’” (Hebrews 1:8-9 ESV)

When Jesus came onto life’s scene, a KING was being anticipated. However, that idea greatly concerned Herod who tried to eliminate the competition. (Matthew 2:3 & 16) Upon seeing the great compassion and power Jesus possessed in feeding a multitude of people, there were those who were ready to come make Him a KING by force. (John 6:15) Jesus would become KING, but not at their hands. Then there were the Jewish leaders. When they considered the notion of Jesus being KING they opted to state their allegiance to Caesar by declaring, “We have no king but Caesar.” (John 19:14-15)

Are we continuing to accept Jesus as the KING of our life? Is His SOVEREIGNTY firmly established on the throne of our heart? Who the “ruler” is over our life is of utmost importance. Who (or what) we allow to be SOVERIGN in our life must be considered. May our cry be, “We have NO KING BUT JESUS!"

Have a great day UNDER THE LOVING RULE OF OUR LORD JESUS!

God's Provision! (part 3 of 4)

Beginning again with the text that began this series…
“(3) My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD OF HOSTS CARES FOR HIS FLOCK, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. (4) FROM HIM SHALL COME THE CORNERSTONE, from him the TENT PEG, from him the BATTLE BOW, from him every RULER -- all of them together.” (Zechariah 10:3-4 ESV)

We have considered the importance and STABILITY associated with a “cornerstone” and the significance of the “tent peg” and our life being staked down or anchored firmly in Jesus and the hope He offers. The third item mentioned that would be provided by the “Lord of Hosts” is the “battle bow.”

Again and again as we look over the history of Israel we see how many times God was there to fight their battles for them. God was to be acknowledged as the One Who brought their victories. Reliance on God rather than self was to remain at the forefront of their minds. However, of what significance would be the “battle bow” to us? Let us remember there is a spiritual warfare going on and there remains the need to look to God for being sufficiently equipped in order to be victorious. The battle cannot be won by our own devices or personal strength alone.

In Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth he mentioned…
“by truthful speech, and the POWER OF GOD; with the WEAPONS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS for the right hand and for the left;” (2 Corinthians 6:7 ESV)

Later on he would also mention…
“(3) For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. (4) For the WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE are not of the flesh but HAVE DIVINE POWER to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments (5) and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ESV)

It is not with the weapons of this world that we are to engage in the spiritual battle nor by our own cunning and strength, but by WEAPONS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS and of DIVINE POWER. It is by these and the strength the Lord provides that we can press on in the fight, being equipped with the spiritual armor He has provided suitable to the task. (Ephesians 6:10-18) Among the list of spiritual equipment Paul mentioned in his Ephesian letter was the “sword of the spirit” which he stated “is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17) There is great power in the truth of God’s Word being lived and spoken that can cut into hearts (i.e. Acts 2:37) and destroy arguments as thoughts are brought into captivity in submission to Christ. This was the aim of Paul in his ministry.

But even beyond our own being equipped is the One behind whom we are to continually march. In Revelation we read…

“And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And ITS RIDER HAD A BOW, AND A CROWN was given to him, and HE CAME OUT CONQUERING, AND TO CONQUER.” (Revelation 6:2 ESV)

Keeping Jesus out front as we faithfully follow Him, we will be led victoriously through this life and on into eternity. May we follow on acknowledging that victory comes from the Lord.

Have a great day TRIUMPHANTLY LIVING IN CHRIST!

God's Provision! (part 2 of 4)

Noting again the text we began with yesterday…
“(3) My anger is hot against the shepherds, and I will punish the leaders; for the LORD OF HOSTS CARES FOR HIS FLOCK, the house of Judah, and will make them like his majestic steed in battle. (4) FROM HIM SHALL COME THE CORNERSTONE, from him the TENT PEG, from him the BATTLE BOW, from him every RULER -- all of them together.” (Zechariah 10:3-4 ESV)

Yesterday we considered the importance and STABILITY associated with a “cornerstone”; the first of four things mentioned that would be provided by the “Lord of Hosts.” Today, let us consider the “tent peg.”

Tent pegs can be easily overlooked. They are small and off to the sides and because they are sometimes overlooked, they can be tripped on. However, they are very important. With older tent styles, the pegs were necessary to help hold the walls out, thus providing room within the tent. Even though the dome tent style popular today can be free standing, the pegs (or stakes) are still important for ANCHORING the tent to keep it from blowing away in the wind. The poles and rods may help the tent to stand up, but the tent pegs pull the structure tight and ANCHOR IT IN PLACE.

The Hebrew writer encouraged…
“(17) So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, (18) so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to HOLD FAST TO THE HOPE SET BEFORE US. (19) We have this as a sure and STEADFAST ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, A HOPE that enters into the inner place BEHIND THE CURTAIN, (20) WHERE JESUS HAS GONE as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:17-20 ESV)

Without our life properly ANCHORED or STAKED DOWN, there is much in this life that can cause us to be blown over and tossed about. Is our life SECURELY ANCHORED in the hope that only God can offer through Jesus Christ? Are we WELL GROUNDED in the truths of God’s Word and the promises that are ours in Jesus Christ? This is the provision God has made for us to enjoy STABILITY even in this realm. Our life might look good, but if it is not SECURELY STAKED DOWN in Christ we will not be able to withstand the storms of this life. It is in Jesus we can find the hope that lifts us above the despair experienced by the world. As long as we are in the “tent of this body” (2 Corinthians 5:1 & 4; 2 Peter 1:13) may Jesus be the peg that securely holds our life in place.

Have a great day PRAISING GOD FOR THE STEADFAST HOPE IN CHRIST!

God's Provision! (part 1 of 4)

People look a lot of directions and to a lot of things in search of STABILITY for life. The reality in this realm is that people disappoint us because they are not always as dependable and strong as we might hope. (Let us keep in mind that is the picture of our life as well.) The things trusted in are also not as enduring as they perhaps first appear. Still, though we find great strength and usefulness from the people (including the special relationships with our brothers and sisters in Christ) and things with which we surround ourselves, unless our life is anchored in the trust of God we will not find the STABILITY necessary for sustaining us.

Reading through Zechariah I was struck by the following encouragement God made known through this prophet.

The leaders of God’s people were a disappointment to Him. They were not good shepherds of His flock. However, because God cared about His flock, He would provide what would ideally fulfill the greatest needs of His people and ultimately bring blessing to us as well. There are four things mentioned that the “Lord of Hosts” would provide: the “cornerstone”, the “tent peg”, the “battle bow”, and “every ruler.” Each of these represents a different purpose and meet a different need. Perhaps we would not view them as having equal importance. However, each should be seen as holding great significance for life as well as providing a sense of great STABILITY. Let us consider for a moment the first of these four and (Lord Willing) we will consider the others over the next few days.

The “cornerstone” of a structure is of paramount significance in establishing the starting point of a structure and providing a point from which the rest of the building can be aligned. God needs to be that in our life as we also recognize Jesus as the “CORNERSTONE” (Ephesians 2:20) of His church and our life. Is this where we look for our life to be properly built up and aligned? Just as Judah needed to look beyond the physical building of the temple and the holy city Jerusalem to more of a spiritual relationship with God, we too need to focus on the spiritual impact on our life with Jesus as the FOUNDATION (1 Corinthians 3:11) and “CORNERSTONE” in our individual lives and in association to our relationship with each other.

The temple was destroyed and rebuilt more than once. However, there is an enduring and more STABLE STRUCTURE of which we in Christ are a part.

Paul noted…
“(19) So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, (20) built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, CHRIST JESUS HIMSELF BEING THE CORNERSTONE, (21) in whom the whole structure, being joined together, GROWS INTO A HOLY TEMPLE IN THE LORD. (22) In him you also are BEING BUILT TOGETHER INTO A DWELLING PLACE FOR GOD BY THE SPIRIT.” (Ephesians 2:19-22 ESV)

For us to possess STABILITY in our spiritual lives, we must rest our life on Jesus and continually seek for our life to be aligned with Him and His Will. Let us also realize the structure we are being built into together as God’s household. May we strive to live in a manner that makes us a suitable dwelling.

Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE CORNERSTONE GOD HAS PUT IN PLACE!

Twenty-Four Seven!

Some things cannot be scheduled, they just happen. There are activities of life that cannot be marked on the calendar even though they might be very important events. However, we need to be prepared in mind and spirit when they arise. To what am I referring? OPPORTUNITIES! Someone has said, “Opportunity is no respecter of office hours; always be on the job.” [source: sentence sermons]

OPPORTUNITIES pop up around the clock. They can spring up suddenly at unexpected times and in unexpected places. How prepared or willing are we to seize them when they arise? How alert are we to the times when OPPORTUNITY crosses our path? Recently as my wife and I were shopping in one of our local grocery stores, she saw one of her co-workers who appeared to be upset. Coming to understand the news she had just received by cell phone, we took the OPPORTUNITY right then and there to pray with her. It is what she needed at the time and so we were willing to offer the assistance in the moment. Sometimes we don’t know how far reaching the impact a moment’s action might be when we use the OPPORTUNITIES set before us.

Paul urged the Galatians…
“(9) And let us NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, AS WE HAVE OPPORTUNITY, LET US DO GOOD TO EVERYONE, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)

The Greek translated “OPPORTUNITY” points to a fixed or definite period, but also conveys the idea of a “seasonable time”. Perhaps we should think of OPPORTUNITIES as moments in season and ripe for the picking with wonderful fruit that can be enjoyed. May we remain ready and willing to take advantage of them in the name of Jesus.

Have a great day READY TO SERVE AT A MOMENTS NOTICE!

Defining Moments!

Defining moments! Those occasions when what we really are is made evident. Situations where our true colors have the opportunity to show. Times when our true essence becomes clearest to those around us. What are some of the things that define our life?

There was an English publication that offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Among the thousands of answers received were the following: “One who multiplies joys, divides grief.” “One who understands our silence.” “A volume of sympathy bound in cloth.” “A watch which beats true for all time and never runs down.” But the definition that won the prize was: “A friend -- THE ONE WHO COMES IN WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD HAS GONE OUT.” [original source unknown]

On one occasion Jesus was approached by an individual who seemed to want a definition of what marked the life of one who would inherit eternal life. (Luke 10: 25) This man’s focus was on keeping the law, but was obeying commands all there was to it? How about loving God and one’s neighbor? Well, what does it truly mean to love God and also to have a love for others? In an effort to justify himself, this man asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29) What might be the defining moment of being neighborly?

We read…
“(30) Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. (31) Now by chance A PRIEST was going down that road, and when he saw him he PASSED BY on the other side. (32) So likewise A LEVITE, when he came to the place and saw him, PASSED BY on the other side. (33) BUT A SAMARITAN, as he journeyed, CAME TO WHERE HE WAS, and when he saw him, he had compassion. (34) HE WENT TO HIM and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. (35) And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ (36) WHICH of these three, do you think, PROVED TO BE A NEIGHBOR to the man who fell among the robbers?’ (37) He said, ‘THE ONE WHO SHOWED HIM MERCY.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You go, and do likewise.’” (Luke 10:30-37 ESV)

Two continued on with their own stuff (a priest and Levite), while one (a Samaritan) stopped, CAME TO HIM, and gave of his time and money to see that the needs of this one who had fallen victim to thieves were met. He was also willing to continue to BE THERE for this one by being ready to further take care of whatever else was involved in his care. (vs.35) Truly, while others went out, HE CAME IN. A friend. A neighbor. How do our own actions define it? Jesus urged to “go, and do likewise.”

Have a great day DISPLAYING A GODLY GIVING ESSENCE IN LIFE!

Eyes Wide Open!

Yesterday morning as I was a couple miles into my walk, a song began running through my mind. I don’t believe I had heard the song in a while, but the following words kept coming again and again: “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. Open the eyes of my heart. I want to see you. I want to see you.” (Paul Baloche, © 1997, Integrity’s Hosanna! Music) Even though I spend time in God’s Word on a daily basis, perhaps these words were reminding me of how I need to always maintain an openness to what God is trying to reveal.

The psalmist stated…
“OPEN MY EYES, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” (Psalm 119:18 ESV)

When it comes to viewing God’s Word it is not so much what our eyes see as it is what we are willing to TAKE TO HEART. The same things can be viewed by two individuals with one walking away denying the existence of God and the authority of His Word while another comes away accepting it all! In order to see God and the wisdom of His Word, the EYES OF OUR HEART must be open to seeing as He would have us see.

In Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus we read…
“(15) For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, (16) I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, (17) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of WISDOM and of revelation in the KNOWLEDGE of him, (18) HAVING THE EYES OF YOUR HEARTS ENLIGHTENED, THAT YOU MAY KNOW what is THE HOPE to which he has called you, what are THE RICHES OF HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE in the saints, (19) and what is THE IMMEASURABLE GREATNESS OF HIS POWER TOWARD US who believe, according to the working of his great might (20) that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” (Ephesians 1:15-21 ESV)

To recognize the Sovereignty of God and His loving mindfulness of every aspect of our lives, as well as perceiving the depth of knowledge and practical wisdom contained in His Word, ought to leave us wide-eyed in awe of such a provider as He. How enlightened are we allowing the EYES OF OUR HEART to be each time to consider God and read His wondrous message of hope and grace? May all we have come to know about God and the blessings He desires to bring to our life both now and for eternity be TAKEN TO HEART as we live in the light of His wondrous love. Believing in Him and all that He has revealed will help us to see as we ought.

Have a great day KNOWING THAT THE SEEING IS IN THE BELIEVING!

Reconciled Accounts!

I have known people who kept extra money in their bank account or who would round up their totals just to make sure there was money to COVER THEIR ERRORS of subtraction when writing checks.

A husband once observed his wife putting forth some real effort to RECONCILE her checkbook balance with their bank statement. She compared her canceled checks with her stubs. Then, after spending a whole morning working to BALANCE the figures, she had four sheets of neat columns representing all the items and figures with a perfect BALANCE reflected at the end. As her husband looked over the list, everything was clearly noted, item for item, except for one line which read “E.S.P. -- $23.64”. Asking his wife what the E.S.P. meant he received the response, “Error Some Place.”

How does our life BALANCE out? When all is said and done, how is it RECONCILED? When we look at the totals we also should clearly see it does not add up to what it should. There is an “Error(s) Some Place.” However, in our relationship to Christ, God has provided a means by which the ACCOUNT can be RECONCILED!

Paul stated our situation and its remedy in these words:
“(23) for ALL HAVE SINNED AND FALL SHORT of the glory of God, (24) and ARE JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” (Romans 3:23-24 ESV)

In our life there is a “short fall”. Nevertheless, because of Jesus, God JUSTIFIES the “columns” and by His grace marks the ACCOUNT BALANCED.

John encouraged…
“I am writing to you, little children, because YOUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN FOR HIS NAME’S SAKE.” (1 John 2:12 ESV)

Or “… FORGIVEN ON ACCOUNT OF HIS NAME.” (NIV)

Our obedience to God is important. We must continually seek to please Him in all ways. However, whatever good works we would place into the ACCOUNT as far as salvation is concerned, our “statement” would be stamped “N.F.S.” (Non-Sufficient Funds) for covering our debt of sin. Praise God for His promise in Christ to ultimately RECONCILE the ACCOUNT in our favor.

Have a great day BANKING ON GOD’S FAITHFULNESS!

Safety Barrier!

We recently had some strong winds and snow in our area. Following these strong winds I noticed a barricade placed alongside a road I frequently travel either by car or foot. I could not see, however, why there was a need for caution. There was no hole in the pavement. No wires were hanging to the ground. No tree or other debris had fallen to block the way. It was not until the next day as I walked along the other side of the road that I noticed the danger that existed. Up in a tall tree was a huge branch -- broken and hanging precariously -- a branch that should it fall could either cause serious injury to someone walking by or damage to a vehicle that might be parked beneath.

Safety barriers! Barricades! Warning signs of danger in the area. Often we can look over or beyond those barriers and see what the danger is and why we should keep our distance. Though the danger is not always easily seen, the barriers have been put in place by those who know the danger exists and have done so for our PROTECTION. The problem is that those signs are too often ignored. Frequently signs warning of water over the roadway have gone unheeded because the danger did not look bad. Drivers have decided to drive through anyway, only to find the water was actually deeper than it appeared. The safety barrier that was placed for a reason should have been obeyed.

The way some live their lives in general is not much different. God has given us His commands and standard for life, drawing the line between right and wrong as a safety barrier (a boundary) to PROTECT us. Nevertheless some look across the line and fail to see any danger, so they cross over anyway. Others may look over the boundary and see what the caution is about, but decide it doesn’t look that bad so they cross over only to soon find themselves in deeper than they imagined.

In the wisdom of Proverbs we read…
“(5) EVERY WORD OF GOD PROVES TRUE; HE IS A SHIELD TO THOSE WHO TAKE REFUGE IN HIM. (6) Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.” (Proverbs 30:5-6 ESV)

God’s words -- whether warnings or promises -- are true and should to be taken as they are. His warnings are to be heeded because God knows the dangers we may not see and desires to PROTECT us from falling into them. The safety barrier of His commands is for OUR BENEFIT both physically and spiritually. May we appreciatively obey the warnings so that we can ultimately be brought safely into God’s heavenly kingdom. (2 Timothy 4:18)

Did Not Withold! (part 2 of 2)

Yesterday, as we considered the great faith of Abraham, we noted how faithfully he was willing to submit to the commands of God even when it may not have made sense to him. He had an “only son”, a son whom he loved and had waited many years to have, one through whom the fulfillment of the promise of blessing to all nations was to begin working toward fruition, and a son whom he figuratively received back from the dead. As I read through Genesis 22, not only am I struck by the great obedient faith Abraham possessed, but I am also struck by a number of parallels.

The fulfillment of the promise to Abraham came with the coming of Jesus, GOD’S SON, into this world. In Paul’s letter to the churches of Galatia he made it clear that the “seed” (KJV & NIV) or “offspring” (ESV) of which the promise to Abraham ultimately pointed toward was Christ. (Galatians 3:16) Though Abraham loved his son, he loved God more and was willing to offer his son. It is because God loves us that He was willing to offer HIS SON on our behalf.

John wrote…
“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that HE LOVED US AND SENT HIS SON TO BE THE PROPITIATION [appeasing or atoning sacrifice] FOR OUR SINS.” (1 John 4:10 ESV)

Jesus was called the “BELOVED SON” by the Father on two occasions: at His baptism to fulfill all righteousness (Matthew 3:17) and at the time of His transfiguration on the mountain. (Matthew 17:5) Just as it would have been confusing for the long awaited son of Abraham to be offered, the death of GOD’S SON was a confusing thing (note Luke 24:19-21) as He had been perceived to be the long awaited Messiah. However, whether it makes sense or not (i.e. 1 Corinthians 1:23) it was the plan of God and He did not withhold HIS SON even though the world (self included) by no means deserved such a gift. The SON OF GOD was offered completely and was literally received back from the dead with His resurrection providing the assurance of ours. (1 Corinthians 15:20) Jesus was the “only son” (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9) God had to offer and by which we can have the hope of eternal life.

Paul encouraged…
“(31) What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (32) HE WHO DID NOT SPARE HIS OWN SON BUT GAVE HIM UP FOR US ALL, HOW WILL HE NOT ALSO WITH HIM GRACIOUSLY GIVE US ALL THINGS?” (Romans 8:31-32 ESV)

Praise the Heavenly Father that He loved us enough to not withhold HIS SON. In view of the blessings that are ours in Christ may we continue to look to God in trusting faith for Him to fulfill His will in our lives.

Have a great day SURRENDERING WHOLLY TO THE ONE WHO GIVES US ALL THINGS!

Did Not Withhold! (part 1 of 2)

Abraham is noted as a man of great faith. His life journey was one of following God even when he did not know where God was leading him or when the situation may have been a bit confusing. In his old age, God fulfilled the promise of a son born to his wife Sarah. THIS SON would be the beginning of bringing to fruition the blessing of all nations through Abraham’s seed. What a joy this must have been to Abraham and especially Sarah who seems to have thought the day would never come. (note Genesis 18:12) Then God made what was perhaps the most confusing request of Abraham that could possibly be made.

We read…
“(1) After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here am I.’ (2) He said, ‘TAKE YOUR SON, YOUR ONLY SON ISAAC, WHOM YOU LOVE, and go to the land of Moriah, and OFFER HIM THERE AS A BURNT OFFERING on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” (Genesis 22:1-2 ESV)

Who of us would not have responded, “But, but, but….” with all kinds of questions or statements about the request being unreasonable? What about the promise? What about all the time spent waiting for THIS SON? There was future blessing that hinged on THIS SON! Nevertheless Abraham set off on the journey in obedience to God. It is no surprise that Isaac asked what was going on, but he accepted his father’s statement that God would provide the lamb for the offering. (Genesis 22:7-8) So they both went on together.

Abraham was not stopped until the knife was in the air and we read…
“(11) But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here am I.’ (12) He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, SEEING YOU HAVE NOT WITHHELD YOUR SON, YOUR ONLY SON, FROM ME.’” (Genesis 22:11-12 ESV)

God provided a ram stuck in a thicket (Genesis 22:13) and this great man of faith had the promise again made to him.

“(15) And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven (16) and said, By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this AND HAVE NOT WITHHELD YOUR SON, YOUR ONLY SON, (17) I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, (18) and IN YOUR OFFSPRING SHALL ALL THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH BE BLESSED, because you have obeyed my voice.’” (Genesis 22:15-18 ESV)

The Hebrew writer tells us that figuratively speaking, Abraham -- who was willing to offer HIS ONLY SON -- received him back from the dead. (Hebrews 11:19) Abraham loved HIS SON, but He loved God more and was willing to obey whatever God said. That is great faith.

I know I still have some growing to do in developing that kind of faith. How about you? Unless we grow in our faith there will be parts of our life we will withhold from God. As we meditate on God’s track record we should recognize that even when something may not appear to make sense to us, if God has commanded it He can be trusted to work it out! That’s exactly what He did with Abraham. May we surrender to God’s Will trusting Him to do the same in our life.

Have a great day LEARNING TO TRUST GOD MORE!

Let God Do It!

When Job’s friends (Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar) came to him in the midst of his suffering and loss, they did not provide him much comfort. In arrogance they heaped guilt upon Job, urging him again and again to confess the sin that had brought about the circumstances of his present condition. These friends arrogantly spoke as if they had God and the happenings of life all figured out. In self-righteousness they exalted themselves above Job and spoke to him in a condescending manner. All the while Job defended his integrity and longed for answers from God. When God finally did speak to Job and questioned him (Job 38-41), Job was humbled. (Job 42:6) God then blessed Job in two ways. The second was restoration of property as well as more sons and daughters (John 42:12-13) and Job’s life was described as being more blessed by God in his latter days than in the beginning. (Job 42:12) It is the first blessing I want us to note because it is one that might be easily overlooked.

We read…
“(7) After the Lord had spoken these words to Job, the Lord said to Eliphaz the Temanite: ‘My anger burns against you and against your two friends, for YOU HAVE NOT SPOKEN OF ME WHAT IS RIGHT, AS MY SERVANT JOB HAS. (8) Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams and GO TO MY SERVANT JOB and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And MY SERVANT JOB SHALL PRAY FOR YOU, for I WILL ACCEPT HIS PRAYER not to deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has.’ (9) So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did what the Lord had told them, AND THE LORD ACCEPTED JOB’S PRAYER.” (Job 42:7-9 ESV)

Job’s friends had attacked his reputation and called his integrity into question. It was not Job, but rather God who in the end EXALTED Job in the sight of his friends. These three who had exalted themselves in the sight of Job were faced with having to humble themselves before him. The ones who had self-righteously been critical of Job were in need of Job’s intercession on their behalf and Job was faithful in doing it. Job was EXALTED BY GOD as the mediator between them and God. There was no need for Job to offer any defense because God made it clear to Job’s friends that he was God’s servant and his prayer would be accepted.

Jesus instructed…
“(11) The greatest among you shall be your servant. (12) WHOEVER EXALTS HIMSELF WILL BE HUMBLED, and WHOEVER HUMBLES HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED.” (Matthew 23:11-12 ESV)

Isn’t that exactly what took place as a distinction between Job and his friends? When we exalt ourselves we are in need of being brought down. Humility is our action and EXALTATION is God’s!

Peter exhorted…
“HUMBLE YOURSELVES, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so THAT AT THE PROPER TIME HE MAY EXALT YOU,” (1 Peter 5:6 ESV)

To begin thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought (Romans 12:3) could cause us to miss this blessing. EXALTING is something to be left to God because He knows how and when to do it! May we retain a genuine sense of humility as we allow God to do the EXALTING. This will render our lives the most useful to His purposes as we humbly surrender to His Sovereignty and Will.

Have a great day LETTING GOD BRING THE STANDING IN OUR LIFE!

Family Thing!

A family thing. People meaning something to each other. People joyful about spending time together. People sharing a common interest. People ready to embrace and be embraced. People ready to act any time of day or night when the need arises. I believe God intended the family relationship to be special, but what I have really been describing is the special relationship within the spiritual family of believers more than physical blood relations. However, the spiritual relationship is also a blood relationship because it is the blood of Christ that has bought us (1 Peter 1:18-19) and brought about the common ground for such a family relationship. Do we recognize the significance of the JESUS CONNECTION and what comes along with it?

On an occasion when Jesus was told that his mother and brothers were outside wishing to speak to Him, we read…

“(49) And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers! (50) For WHOEVER DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN IS MY BROTHER AND SISTER AND MOTHER.’” (Matthew 12:49-50 ESV)

This FAMILY CONNECTION begins with a JESUS CONNECTION! As we consider our relationship with the Heavenly Father and with our elder brother Jesus, we should recognize the SPECIAL FAMILY we have and the bond that ought to be between us. Through our CONNECTION with JESUS we have been given the right to become children of God (John 1:12-13) and thus members of this family. And the family relationship this JESUS CONNECTION creates is one that defies geographic separation, social level and ethnicity.

Writing to the church at Galatia, Paul encouraged…
“(26) for IN CHRIST JESUS you are ALL SONS OF GOD, through faith. (27) For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (28) There is NEITHER JEW nor GREEK, there is neither SLAVE nor FREE, there is neither MALE nor FEMALE, for you are ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS. (29) And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” (Galatians 3:26-29 ESV)

Family! God’s Family! All one in Christ and descendants of Abraham according to the promise of God. Adoption and marriage choices aside, we generally don’t choose our families and the members of it, but I pray we each have families that are a blessing to our life. However, when it comes to the family of God we have a choice to make. Are we willing to obey the will of God? (Matthew 12:50) If Christ has been put on in baptism (Galatians 3:27), having been brought into that special CONNECTION with JESUS brings us into a special relationship with each other. I pray that we each are experiencing the specialness within the family of God that the JESUS CONNECTION is meant to provide.

Have a great day KNOWING THE BLESSING OF GOD’S FAMILY!

The Face That's Seen!

This past Friday, as I was exiting our post office, I stopped and held the door for an older couple who were on their way in. When the woman saw me peaking around the door as she entered, she said, “Oh, you’re the jolly walker. That’s what we call you.” I assumed the “we” was her and her husband. As I smiled a greeting to her she went on to say, “And you are jolly.”

We may be called various things depending on how others perceive our life. Some of those labels may be complimentary while others may not. When it comes to our Christianity, what kind of face do we put on it. Could we be labeled as a “Stoic Christian” (always serious and straight faced), a “Sourpuss Christian” (leaving the impression Christianity means you can’t have any fun), a “Snobbish Christian” (always displaying a “holier than thou” attitude), or a “JOYFUL Christian” (radiating a sense of joyful hope regardless of the challenges of life)? Is our manner of walking in life making the HOPE AND JOY of Christianity believable?

Peter wrote…
“(3) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be BORN AGAIN TO A LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, (4) to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, (5) who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (6) In this you REJOICE, though now for a little while, as was necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, (7) so that the tested GENUINENESS OF YOUR FAITH -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to RESULT IN PRAISE AND GLORY AND HONOR at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (8) Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you BELIEVE IN HIM AND REJOICE WITH JOY THAT IS INEXPRESSIBLE and filled with glory, (9) obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:3-9 ESV)

A LIVING HOPE! Genuine faith that causes us to REJOICE even in trials. Verse six in the New Living Translation begins “So be TRULY GLAD” and in verse eight reads “even now you are HAPPY WITH A GLORIOUS, INEXPRESSIBLE JOY.” Are we living such that this is the face we put on our Christianity? May the JOY of genuine Christian faith be evident in our daily life.

Have a great day KEEPING UP A HAPPY FAITH!

Busy Walkers!

Being idle means to not be working or not being in use. A car that is idling may be running, but going nowhere. Fuel would be consumed, but for what purpose? Walking is activity that gets us somewhere. However, note how Paul used these two words -- idleness and walking -- together.

We read…
“For we hear that some among you WALK IN IDLENESS, not busy at work, but busybodies.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11 ESV)

Is it possible to have the appearance of activity while actually accomplishing nothing of significance in the eyes of God? The literal idea from the Greek here is to be “walking around in idleness” such as with a refusal to work. (Note the specific context in verse 10.) The Greek translated “busybodies” literally means “to be working around.” Busy being idle -- too much free time for circulating as a busybody in other people’s business -- but not a body busy in the business of WORKING FOR THE LORD and SERVICE TO OTHERS.

Consider the child who wastes as much energy and time trying to get out of work as it would have taken to have accomplished the job twice over. Is it a lesson still to be learned? It seems that some still work hard at avoiding work, thus “working around” what they really OUGHT TO BE DOING. When we are not involved in what we OUGHT TO BE DOING we tend to get into trouble and if that trouble is not with others it will ultimately be with God Who has prepared “GOOD WORKS” with the expectation “that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)

“Walking in idleness” can be draining both physically and spiritually while walking in SERVICE TO THE GLORY OF GOD can be energizing and exhilarating. May our life be marked by a walking about in works that accomplish God’s intended purposes.

Have a great day BEING A BODY BUSY ABOUT GOD’S BUISINESS!

What The Walk Says!

It is sometimes easy to tell how someone is feeling or what their life focus is by the way in which they walk. Someone who walks with a shuffle may be feeling depressed or at least be sad about something. An individual just leisurely strolling along may be in a thoughtful mood. The person who exhibits some spring in their step may be experiencing great joy. Those walking very quickly could leave the impression they are in a hurry to get someplace.

A few days ago -- as I was walking along one of my usual routes -- an individual I have known for a number of years called out to me from across the street, “Still walking like a fool!” Perhaps some would take offence at such a statement, but being acquainted with him I knew he was merely referring to the regularity and fast pace that generally marks my walking. He is fully aware of my COMMITMENT to walking as he frequently waves when seeing me at various places around town. As I considered this man’s remark, I thought of what marked the spiritual life of Paul.

Consider the contrast Paul noted in his first letter to the church at Corinth.
“(8) Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich! Without us you have become kings! And would that you did reign, so that we might share the rule with you! (9) For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death, because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels, and to men. (10) WE ARE FOOLS FOR CHRIST’S SAKE, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. (11) To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are poorly dressed and buffeted and homeless, (12) and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; (13) when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things.” (1 Cor. 4:8-13 ESV)

Like the other Apostles, Paul was COMMITTED to living for Christ and fulfilling the mission he had been given. None of the hardships experienced would keep him from remaining faithful. In the view of some he could appear as “a fool”, but Paul’s view seems to have been that for Christ he would let it be so. The manner of Paul’s walk in life left no question regarding to Whom and what he was COMMITTED! His life walk was marked by a combination of boldness and humility. His life walk was marked by unwavering faithfulness to the truth, but patience toward those still learning. Paul walked on joyfully in spite of the challenges he faced in his ministry. How is a sense of COMMITMENT made evident in our walk?

To the church at Ephesus Paul urged…
“(1) I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, URGE YOU TO WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE CALLING to which you have been called, (2) with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, (3) eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV)

Is that what marks the manner in which we walk? Is our COMMITMENT to the Lord and His Will made evident by the qualities of humility, gentleness, patience, love, and peace in our life steps? May our life walk be marked by a COMMITMENT to walking in a manner worthy of the Lord, seeking to be fully pleasing to Him (Colossians 1:10) as we press on in faithfulness to His Word and Will. Some might think us a fool, but if so, let it be because we are one for Christ!

Have a great day EXHIBITING A SPIRITED STEP IN CHRIST!

Unhampered Hiker!

I am not sure of the original source of the following as I have come across it in two different church bulletins as well as via e-mail. I used the illustration with my sermon this past Sunday and am using it here in conjunction with a continuing focus on our life’s journey.

==============

THRU HIKERS

Every year, about 1500 “thru-hikers” set out to walk the entire Appalachian Trail in a single season. Only 10 percent complete the 2,160 miles of challenging terrain stretching from Georgia to Maine. One reason some people drop out early is that they haven’t learned to travel light.

A friend of mine launched his thru-hike carrying a seriously overloaded backpack. He had a cassette player and six tapes of bird calls, an air pistol to keep the varmints away, a camera, a radio, and an alarm clock. “If it ran on batteries,” he said, “I had one in my pack.”

At his first stop, an experienced hiker helped him go through his pack and decide what to keep and what to send home. Each item was placed on a gram scale with the question, “Is it worth it? Do you want to carry this for the next 2000 miles?

My friend discovered that his biggest problem was an accumulation of little things. Most of his extra weight was in ounces, not pounds. He didn’t need half of what was in his first-aid kit nor the extra tube of toothpaste. His heavy multi-tool knife was replaced with one weighing only an ounce. A metal knife-fork-and-spoon set gave way to a single plastic spoon. He sent home 26 pounds of unnecessary weight.

How many of us are trying to walk the trail of faith in Christ weighed down by an accumulation of little things -- anger, bitterness, worry, envy, jealousy, lust, and selfishness? Instead of enjoying the beauty of life with Jesus, we complain about how hard it is to follow Him.

Psalm 32 is for everyone who’s ready to shed the weight of sin and regain the joy of walking with the Lord. “Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.” (32:1)

What do you need to unload today?

==============

What kind of excess baggage are we carrying through life? What is it that we need to UNLOAD TODAY so that we are not hampered on life’s journey and can regain the joy of walking with Jesus? It is important for us to survey the contents of our life and rid ourselves of all that we should not be packing around. Both Paul and Peter listed a number of things we need to discard if we are still carrying them along. (Colossians 3:8; 1 Peter 2:1)

The Hebrew writer exhorted…
“(1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, LET US ALSO LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT, AND SIN WHICH CLINGS SO CLOSELY, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, (2) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV)

Let us not allow anything to hamper us on our journey Heavenward! The things that negatively impact our relationship with God and each other need to be UNLOADED from our life. Also, acknowledging that the burden of sin was lifted at the cross, let us press on with a humble and penitent spirit, accepting the forgiveness of God. Then we will not be needlessly WEIGHED DOWN as we journey along life’s way.

Have a great day PRESSING ON UNRESTRAINED!

Opportunity!

Here we are having journeyed three days into the New Year. A three day journey can be significant. Many miles can be traveled geographically and many moments may be utilized beneficially for ourselves and others. How far have we traveled in accomplishing some things or getting some changes put solidly in place? What kind of opportunities have encounters with others provided? Do we still have a RESOLUTE VIEW TOWARD PRESSING ON?

With journeys there are choices to be made all along the way? Do we continue? Do we back track? Do we change course? Do we keep going? When those opportunities present themselves, we must give serious consideration to what impact our choices will have on the journey and ultimate destination.

After the Hebrew writer referred to Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob, he stated…
“(13) These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. (14) For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. (15) If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, THEY WOULD HAVE HAD OPPORTUNITY TO RETURN. (16) But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:13-16 ESV)

As we have begun the journey into a new year, are we looking ahead or is our focus turned toward the past with a longing for those days? Do we have a desire to return to where we used to be? Is there a lifestyle of our past that is trying to draw us back to it? Today we have the opportunity to return to old ways. Is that our choice?

Perhaps we find ourselves feeling content with where we are and see no need to progress along the way? Do we like the way things are right now and are ready to set up camp and stay? Today we have the opportunity to sit and stagnate. Is that what we will choose?

Is our view, instead, marked by a longing for still better things and ultimately the eternal city prepared for us? If we lose sight of the goal we may not feel much compulsion to keep moving on? Today we have the opportunity to continue on the journey. Is that our RESOLUTE choice?

When others stopped following Jesus, He asked the Twelve if they were going to do the same. (John 6:66-67) They had opportunity, but chose to follow and continued to follow, though one of them would be sidetracked from the journey. (John 6:70-71) Let us, like Peter, remember Who it is that has the “words of eternal life” and that there is no other to whom we can go to find such. (John 6:68-69) Walking in Christ we have a better future than anything of which the present or past can be compared. May we maintain a RESOLUTE VIEW TOWARD PRESSING ON in the steps of our Lord. He will safely lead us to the heavenly homeland.

Have a great day FOCUSED TOWARD THE BETTER THINGS IN CHRIST!

Still On The Journey!

An old missionary couple were returning home for the first time in forty-four years of service. As the liner pulled into port, there to greet the ship -- and a very famous movie actor -- was an over-flow crowd. Banners were flying, bands were playing, celebrities were waiting. The old missionary stood and watched it all and with a tear in his eye he turned to his wife and said, “Looks like some of our brethren could have been here to meet us.” His wife replied with an assuring hug, “The movie star is home, dearest you’re not home yet.”

“Not home yet.” Is that how we feel? Do we view life as a journey that draws us HOMEWARD, but with the realization this is not the place to settle down? Though we might enjoy the rights of citizenship granted where we live (even Paul exercised his rights as a Roman citizen: Acts 16:37; 22:25-29; and 25:11-12) we must not lose sight of where our true citizenship is.

Paul reminded those at Philippi…
“But OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,” (Philippians 3:20 ESV)

Though Philippi was one of the places where Paul was thrown into prison and mentioned his Roman citizenship (Acts 16:37-39), when he later wrote to these Christians he emphasized the HEAVENLY CITIZENSHIP. If we become too much at HOME here we may forget the ETERNAL DESTINATION to which our life is to be journeying toward! Paul had an appreciation for the rights he had as a Roman citizen, but this world was not seen as his home.

After referring to the “tent” -- the temporary body in which we live while in this realm (2 Corinthians 5:1-4) -- Paul referred to the more PERMANENT DWELLING to which he looked forward as he journeyed onward. That is what Paul had a longing for and was determined to not allow anything to keep him from pressing on toward that goal.

As Paul went on in this letter to the church at Corinth, he wrote…
“(6) So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, (7) for we walk by faith, not by sight. (8) Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and AT HOME WITH THE LORD.” (2 Corinthians 5:6-8 ESV)

We’re not home yet. Let us not get overly comfortable here. Our journey continues. We must keep pressing on. We can appreciate the sights and enjoy the labors of love in which we involve ourselves, but home is yet to come. May we maintain a longing for it and for others to share in it too.

Have a great day REMAINING HOMEWARD BOUND!

Retroactive!

“I pray that last year went well for you.” Consider that statement. You may understand the sentiment the words attempt to convey, but are the words being used properly? How often have we found ourselves using an expression that upon further examination is seen to perhaps be a little off base? For me to pray that something in THE PAST went well, would that mean I believe in “retroactive” prayer? Can my prayer change what has already taken place? The proper way to say the above statement would be “I ‘hope’ that last year went well for you.”

We cannot change the actions, circumstances, or situations of THE PAST. However, that does not mean our life now has to be chained to THE PAST or defined in terms of THE PAST. Though we cannot pray retroactively, we can pray for God to forgive the sins of THE PAST and the blood of Jesus has the power to go back and adequately deal with those sins, just as it had power to deal with the sins committed under the old covenant. (Hebrews 9:15) In our relationship with Christ, by the grace of God we are provided the opportunity to move forward today as a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

John encouraged…
“(7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN. (8) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (9) IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS, HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST TO FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND TO CLEANSE US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.” (1 John 1:7-9 ESV)

Through genuine repentance, let us accept the new beginning the blood of Christ makes possible. Trust His forgiveness for THE PAST and press on in the newness of life He makes possible. (Romans 6:4) In spite of THE PAST He is our hope (and the only hope) for today and the eternity prepared for those who are His.

Have a great day FREED IN CHRIST TO MOVE FORWARD!
